It’s been a while, but this update is relevant to this blog :)
I recently signed up for a TEFL (teaching english as a foreign language) certification course because... what else do I have to do in times like this? It’s all online, and will take 11 weeks (although, I considered the 4 week intensive for a bit...this one is just more cost effective).
Considering the certification took nearly a year for me. I’ve been back and forth in registering, but I realised it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while, and it could open up more opportunities for me in the future, including travel, once COVID falls to the wayside. A major factor during my deliberation was cost--the 11 week course offered by International Tefl Academy was a little over $1.2k USD, about equivalent to a three-hour-credit course at a regular university. But they were running a promotion, like they do every now and then, and I’d participated in one of their webinars that they often offer providing information about what it’s like to teach abroad, or find jobs in education and linguistic expertise, which gave me an additional credit towards the program. It was still a significant investment, but even a few hundred dollars made it slightly less burdensome. It seems like in most cases, english teachers abroad easily earn back the cost of certification within a couple of months, which is encouraging.
If you’d like to jump in, and get the certification for yourself, use my referral link. The benefit of choosing an international tefl academy program, as I found out through researching in the past year, is that they have a huge user base and alumni network, as well as resources, and recognized accreditation.

Application Process
For this entry I'm going to be addressing all things needed when you're ready to apply for schools, companies or recruiting agencies. I'll also be offering some tips that I think will be useful or to be kept in mind during this process. Now, remember, the tips are most likely going to be from my own experience so it would be nice if you were able to apply this and other advice to reach what works best for you.
From the very jump I knew I couldn't apply directly to public schools because I would be overlooked. Why? Most Puerto Ricans, as American as we may be, aren't considered qualified to receive a work visa with the Korean government, allegedly. Now, this is the questionable part. In my journey to achieve what I want, I've met many Puerto Ricans before who have been able to receive a work visa and have worked as English teachers. If you do enough research, you know that you would have had to study in the United States for a certain amount of years, among other things, to be an exception. Most of the people I was able to hear from were born in Puerto Rico and studied their whole lives there with a few months of living in the States or never having been. So, these weren't special scenarios. So it's not impossible to make it over there... legally, mind you.
Public schools are very strict, from their requirements to their application period. One little slip and you won't be qualified or would have to wait for the next semester. However, if you meet all requirements you are safest applying through their programs or a recruiter working with them. However, you can't be as picky as you would with private schools. Why? Because you may want to teach in Seoul but be placed in Jeju. It's purely off of what they have available and what positions they need to fill. Remember, in this case, the recruiter isn't the one placing you in a school. They're simply connecting you with the public school program for you to then be placed in a school. You aren't taking as big a risk with public schools. You'll get good treatment for the most part, you'll get proper housing and you will be paid on time.
My experience isn't this, so I couldn't share much. I knew pretty early on that I would have to achieve this with the help of private schools or Hagwon and, hopefully, a recruiter.
Early on, hearing "Hagwon Horror Stories" is pretty terrifying when you're taking the risk of traveling across the world. Hagwons are not private schools in South Korea. They're academies. Private schools are schools that teach all of their subjects in English. Most stories talk about being mistreated or having a contract cut off, etcetera. While this is a risk you're taking, I have been assured that good schools do exist because of social media and the internet. Hagwons or private schools have realized that if they treat their teachers badly, those teachers can share their experience and these schools won't want to be worked with. Of course, being a teacher isn't perfect. Everyone has a job to do and just because people joke about this being an easy job, doesn't mean it's going to be that way. Expect moody people, expect to be scolded if you do something wrong. This happens in all jobs. Especially if you consider Hagwons and private schools being places where parents are paying for their children to receive the best education possible. Everyone is going to want good results.Just make sure to do your research and be vigilant. Ask questions. Trust your gut. Even when you have a recruiter. Be determined on what you want.
Now with all of this being said, why don't we jump into the list of things you want to get done ahead of time:
You have to be a citizen of a recognized English-speaking nation. This could be the U.S.A., U.K., Ireland, (some parts of) Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or South Africa.
A Bachelor's degree in any major, as long as it is 4 or more years and from an accredited college or university. Pretty self-explanatory, right? Though, I do know of many recruiters who don't mind you applying to them during your last semester. Just as long as you can assure them that you will be finishing during that semester. I, personally, decided to officially finish my degree before applying anywhere.
A TEFL or TESL certificate of at least 120 hours. These are also known as TESOL. It stands for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. Currently I am completing my TEFL course. Many recruiters have deals on certified TEFL/TESL, so do ask them about it or you can always look into it for yourself. However, this isn't a suggested requirement. Not anymore at least. I would like to teach in Seoul, which is a very competitive location, so being as prepared as possible is required to get what you want.
Resume and Cover Letter. Again, you want to be as prepared as you possibly can. This is why preparing a solid resume and cover letter is key. The cover letter is mostly what will attract schools or recruiters to take a look at your resume, so make sure you leave them something to be interested in looking into. Your resume is where you can present more of your experience.
You might also be asked if you have any of the following documents. This is where you can make a simple mistake like having the documents too early and then having them expire. It's okay, though. Remember, you can also redo them.
Documents you might need:
FBI Background Check. This process used to take up to 10-14 weeks before, but luckily it takes only a few days now. You can even have it e-mailed first to get a copy even earlier IF DONE ELECTRONICALLY. This is where you send the request electronically, then send all the necessary documents to the FBI. They will already be waiting for the documents. Make sure you also request the option of receiving the response by First-Class Mail. This will give you a physical copy sent by them in a quicker fashion. For more information you can visit this link
Sealed University or college transcripts. Make sure to have a few transcripts in their individual envelopes. Some might even suggest the envelope be sealed with the official university or college seal on the back, as well as a signature and date from the person in-charge to make sure the envelopes weren't tampered with. Just make sure you order a transcript for yourself to keep.
An original passport that has been valid for at least a year. You won't have to send this to them, but you will be asked for a photocopy. This is all to receive your working visa.
The FBI background check and your Bachelor's degree will have to be notarized and apostilled. Your recruiter will provide much more helpful information on this, since it needs to be done carefully. You can also look online to become more familiarized with what this is and how you can do it.
There are also a few additional requirements but those are more situation specific. For example, some might ask you to have a health and drug check before looking for the job while some might require you to take that health and drug check over in South Korea in the school. Make sure to be clear with your recruiter or school on medication you may be taking as it might be what keeps you from getting a job and, honestly, it's best to not get a job than going to jail. Having a nice professional photo, one with children and also a more casual picture wouldn't hurt. Actually, I suggest this. Think of it as additional points for you. You can also have proof of full-time teaching jobs, a teaching license or certificate. This might bump up your pay. I've even heard of people doing Korean-like resumes to appeal to the schools, or even video introductions.
This might be overwhelming and seems like a lot, and it is, but remember the more prepared you are the better. Just don't be over prepared. I made that mistake and have had my FBI check sadly expire, which means it needs to be redone. No big deal, though! I was able to apply to a recruiting agency who is very willing to work along with me. You might be nervous and you might be overwhelmed, but it all works out for the best. Keep working hard!

Get TEFL Certified
June 13, 2020 | by Nqobile Mdima
Tumblr media
A TEFL certificate is your ticket to teaching English abroad. TEFL stands for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. During your TEFL program you will be trained how to teach English to non-native students. The TEFL certificate is required by the school and government. In China for example the government will not issue you a work visa to legally teach English if you don't have a TEFL certificate or two years of teaching experience. When you enroll for a TEFL course make sure that it is delivered by an accredited provider and it leads to a regulated qualification. It must also be a minimum of 120hr.
You can get your TEFL certificate from any of these institutions:
1. itoi TEFL
2. The TEFL Academy

Choosing the right TEFL Certification course
TEFL Courses Diary submitted by Adam Mc M, Valencia TEFL Certification course come in all shapes and sizes. The real difficulty comes with deciding which is right for the individual’s needs. Factoring in cost, convenience and even how much time the student has in order to learn everything they need to comfortable teach abroad. Some of the most popular on the market are TEFL Trainer, International TEFL Academy and ITTT. Most trusted TEFL accreditation courses will give you the hours you need to learn the necessary information for teaching English. For example, TEFL Trainer’s online courses can begin at 140 hours with or without tutoring, making it simple for you to choose which you can work your time around. International TEFL Academy offers a slightly longer course which offers 150 hours plus 20 hours of classroom observation. Giving it an advantage over TEFL Trainer in terms of length however falling behind by not having the option of being able to apply your skills in a classroom of your own.  If the client does not have a lot of time on their hands and would prefer a more flexible course, then ITTT would be the best option for them. This course offers a flexible, study-in-your-own-time program and advanced or specified courses for those who may be wishing to improve their skills. Most of these courses come in around the same price, however, TEFL Trainer has to ability to be paired with Erasmus so the student can practice their skills.  Just as each of these courses will teach, it is very important to practice what is taught in these courses, just as it is important for the ESL students to practice their English. Without classroom time, or at the very least observation, applying the skills learned from these courses in a real-world scenario will be immensely difficult. A student of a course the allows teaching hours will also be more easily employed as they will already have the experience that someone that only has a certificate will not.  Overall it may be a wise idea for anyone considering a TEFL course to ensure they have enough time set aside to study. Pricing is generally very similar so balancing the time one must ensure the course is completed in with the price to be paid is recommended. In order to ensure that the student gets the most from any of these courses it would be advised to obtain some teaching hours of their own. Wither this is through work experience, employment or TEFL Trainer’s teaching capabilities. https://youtu.be/ps0fKbpNCoY

How to Teach English in Japan
Posted: 4/18/20 | April 20th, 2020
Japan is one of the best places in the world to teach English. It’s home to incredible food, a rich culural history, high quality of living, and world-class cities like historic Kyoto and eclectic Tokyo.
I absolutely loved all my time in Japan.
It’s just one of the best places in the world.
And there are plenty of teaching opportunities here too for anyone looking for a new career or an opportunity to live overseas. The bulk of the teaching opportunities in Japan are run by big companies that have positions open all the time, including large chains, smaller companies, and business English classes.
To teach English in Japan, you need to be a native English speaker from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, or the UK and have a bachelor’s degree. You’ll also need to complete a 120-hour TEFL or CELTA certificate.
You don’t need to have any teaching experience, but the higher-paying jobs are competitive so any experience will be helpful when it comes to securing a good job.
Here are the main teaching opportunities you can expect to find in Japan:
Public Schools
One of the easiest ways to get a job teaching at public schools is through the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme (JET) or job placement companies like Interac. These programs employ you as an assistant language teacher (ALT) working alongside a Japanese teacher. (If you go through JET, you’re placed in communities for one year.)
If you find a job without going through JET, you’ll be in classes with up to 40 kids. You are provided textbooks to work from and are responsible for coming up with activities to accompany the teacher’s lesson plans. The workweek is 8am to either 4pm or 5pm, Monday through Friday. There are four classes per day.
Unlike private schools, you are responsible for paying your health premiums and contributing to your pension fund. Vacations are typically unpaid.
If you are employed through a job placement company, you can expect to earn around 230,000 JPY ($2,125 USD) per month. By comparison, the JET program pays closer to 300,000 JPY ($2,770 USD) per month. Benefits include your flights to and from Japan, paid national holidays, and 10 paid vacation days.
Keep in mind the JET Programme application process is long. There is a lot of paperwork and you must attend an in-person interview in your home country. However, it’s worth the effort since there are more perks, better pay, and you’re guaranteed a teaching position if accepted.
Private Schools
Private schools in Japan are known as eikaiwa. Typically, these companies host job fairs in English-speaking countries, where most people apply.
Here, you’ll be teaching small classes and using a curriculum from textbooks designed for students to pass Japan’s ESL (English as a Second Language) exams. Your main work aside from following the curriculum is to create and grade tests. You’re also expected to meet with students after hours and tutor them as needed.
If you teach at a private school, be prepared for longer hours than in other teaching jobs: 5–7 days a week, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
Depending on the company you go through, you can make as much as 275,000 JPY ($2,538 USD) per month. Benefits can include annual leave (usually unpaid), health and pension insurance, the cost of flights, and your visa fees, as well as a small bonus when you complete your yearly contract.
International Schools
As in other countries, teaching jobs at international schools are competitive because they offer the most in terms of salaries and benefits. You’ll need experience and to be a fully accredited teacher in your home country. Teaching at these schools is going to be like teaching at a school in your home country.
Benefits include your flight to Japan, a retirement plan, paid vacation, paid developmental courses, generous housing assistance, and more. Salaries range widely depending on the school — from 200,000 to 600,00 JPY ($1,846–5,538 USD) per month. But, generally, these are the best-paid teaching jobs in the country.
Language Academies
If you want to work with people of varying ages, language academies are an option. Students in these academies are there because they want to learn English — not because it is required — so they are dedicated and work hard.
Hours at language academies vary. Expect to work nights and weekends, as during the usual work week, students are in school or at their jobs. You’ll also need to come up with fun activities to teach English. Pay is around 3,800 JPY ($35 USD) an hour and usually doesn’t include any benefits.
  Universities
Teaching positions at Japanese universities require more qualifications than other such jobs teaching English. You must have a master’s degree, a higher-level certification, and some years of teaching experience.
The hours, however, are far less — you’ll only work between 10 and 15 hours a week, in addition to class preparation and grading.
Your salary will be commensurate with your experience, ranging between 300,000-600,000 JPY ($2,769–5,538 USD) per month. Benefits include up to three months of vacation,

Have you ever thought about leaving your boring life behind for a new one full of exciting adventures, new people and unique experiences? Maybe in an exotic new country like Colombia or Japan? Teaching English abroad might be for you! With tons of exciting countries opening up their doors to young recent college graduates looking to make a difference in the world while having a great time doing it, TEFL teaching is an incredibly easy field to get into. Here’s how to teach English abroad in six easy steps.
1. Take a TEFL Course
This is perhaps the most important step in becoming an English teacher, becoming qualified. TEFL (along with CELTA/TESOL) is an internationally recognized course that is a requirement by pretty much all employers to work at their schools. One can take the TEFL onsite or online and there are pros and cons to each, but online courses are generally a far better bang for your buck. Not all TEFL courses are created equal though, so make sure to do some research before you sign up! Make sure your TEFL provider is fully accredited and has good reviews online before signing up. Most employers also require at least 100 hours of TEFL coursework, so don’t waste your time with anything less than that.
2. Decide Where you Want to Teach
Now the most fun part of the whole process is deciding where you want to teach! There are many fun and exciting destinations with a high demand for TEFL teachers. Some destinations like China, Japan, and the Middle East pay top dollar for English teachers and are ideal for anyone serious about making a life long career out of teaching English. Other Places like Europe and Latin America pay a lot less and are great for someone looking to try teaching English abroad for a year or two as a way to finance sustainable traveling in a destination they’ve always wanted to see. Whatever place you choose, make sure to research everything thoroughly from climate, to cost of living and expected a salary.
3. Go Through the Interview Process
Once you have decided where you want to live, it’s time to get in touch with your TEFL academy about placement to teach English abroad! Any good TEFL academy will offer placement assistance (steer clear of any that don’t!) and they should be helping you every step of the way until you land your interview. They will help you tailor a resume and cover letter specific to the schools they work with before sending them out to employers. The employers will then get in touch with you to schedule a Skype interview! As the employers will likely be in different time zones, there’s a good chance that your interview will be at a very odd hour, early morning or late at night. Whatever the hour, make sure to look fresh, alert and presentable! Have a shower, drink some coffee and wear a nice shirt and tie (or blouse for the ladies). As long as you have done some research, (the TEFL academy should steer you in the right direction) the interview should go fine and you will receive an acceptance email within a couple of weeks!
4. Paperwork
If deciding which destination to pick was the best part, filling out the paperwork is undoubtedly the worst. Now is the time to look into flights, get criminal record checks, gather documents, fill out forms and wait in long lines at international embassies. Every country is different and your school will send you precise instructions on how to apply for the necessary Visa, make sure to follow them to a T. You will also want to begin the process as early as possible, the bureaucracy can take an incredibly long time and it is very likely that additional steps will be added along the way as thing inevitably go wrong but stand strong, you will get through it eventually with a crisp new visa in your passport to teach English abroad!
5. Wrap up your Current Life
Now that you have a job and visa, it’s time to start putting your affairs in order. You will have to quit your current job and leave your apartment. You will also have a ton of other things to wrap up like perhaps selling your car or putting your possessions in storage.
This is also a time of spending a lot of money. You will be buying your plane ticket for one, but there will be added expenses of traveling gear and appropriate clothes. You will need a new teaching wardrobe consisting of business casual clothing as well as climate-appropriate clothes for when you’re not teaching. Quality luggage is also a necessity, have at least one large suitcase that fits everything as well as a mid-sized backpack for your inevitable weekend and holiday excursions. There’s a good chance you also won’t get your preferred brands of personal care/beauty products so make sure you stock up! Don’t overpack though, you can always buy more stuff when you get there. Another thing to look into is vaccinations. Do your research and speak to a doctor before getting anything, every place has different illnesses and you will need different inoculations depending on where you are going.
6. Get on the Plane
It’s done. All your affairs are in order, your bags are packed and goodbyes said. Get a ride to the airport, check your bags and step onboard, your adventure teaching English abroad begins now!
