The TEFL & TESOL certification course industry is highly competitive.
The competitiveness between TEFL programs has several implications. On one hand, it can drive innovation and encourage institutions to improve the quality of their programs. On the other hand, it can lead to the proliferation of subpar programs that do not adequately prepare graduates for the challenges of teaching English online or abroad.

It’s been a while, but this update is relevant to this blog :)
I recently signed up for a TEFL (teaching english as a foreign language) certification course because... what else do I have to do in times like this? It’s all online, and will take 11 weeks (although, I considered the 4 week intensive for a bit...this one is just more cost effective).
Considering the certification took nearly a year for me. I’ve been back and forth in registering, but I realised it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while, and it could open up more opportunities for me in the future, including travel, once COVID falls to the wayside. A major factor during my deliberation was cost--the 11 week course offered by International Tefl Academy was a little over $1.2k USD, about equivalent to a three-hour-credit course at a regular university. But they were running a promotion, like they do every now and then, and I’d participated in one of their webinars that they often offer providing information about what it’s like to teach abroad, or find jobs in education and linguistic expertise, which gave me an additional credit towards the program. It was still a significant investment, but even a few hundred dollars made it slightly less burdensome. It seems like in most cases, english teachers abroad easily earn back the cost of certification within a couple of months, which is encouraging.
If you’d like to jump in, and get the certification for yourself, use my referral link. The benefit of choosing an international tefl academy program, as I found out through researching in the past year, is that they have a huge user base and alumni network, as well as resources, and recognized accreditation.

*hyperventilating*
Okay, so. I’ve been looking into teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) courses for about a month or so now. Not having a bachelor’s degree has narrowed down my choice countries significantly, but honestly, I’m not too worried about my options. I think I’ve finally settled on China, as they have a continuously growing desperation for English teachers there.
I’ve been having a lot of anxiety about China though. The pollution is insane, there are internet restrictions, and getting the proper visa can be damn near impossible without a degree. However, the cost of living is insanely cheap based on everything I’ve been reading. Getting dinner on the way home can be less than $5USD, rent is roughly $300-500 a month with utilities, and the pay for ESL teachers ranges from $1,500-3,200 a month (average is about 2,300).
Last Thursday, at work, I just about flipped my shit because I have a customer that actually teaches ESL in China. I managed to speak with him briefly and get his email address. He has offered to send my contact info off to his employer, which is fucking huge for someone who hasn’t even taking the TEFL course yet. He finally emailed me back tonight when I was starting to get discouraged.
In addition to this, I’ve call the International TEFL Academy just to ask about the viability of getting a job in China without a degree. The recruiter I spoke to helped put my mind at ease and I’ll be having a more in depth conversation with someone later this week.
I’m a little flabbergasted at all of this. My ideas of living and working in an entirely foreign country seem to actually be something I’m currently able to pursue. Like, I could be out of the country by the end of the year.
What the fuck.

"Too good to be true"
World TESOL Academy review, submitted by Craig. I was always told that if something is too good to be true that it is too good to be true. In other words, it won’t live up to your expectations. World TESOL Academy has adverts showing around the clock on Facebook and the reviews for the program were good. So was the price. I think I paid $30 for the course. The promise was that with this…

hi!! if this is too personal or something feel free to ignore, but when i saw your posts about teaching in korea i was curious what degree or certificates you have? i'm currently in a gap year and i have no idea what qualifications i'd need to get to where you are. it all seems so intimidating ;;
Yeee okay so it can be intimidating because there's a lot to look at but I'll tell you what I did and what else I know.
So for me, I studied education. I have a bachelors in music and a bachelors in education as well as a teaching licence from my home province.
Basically, you need a bachelors degree and a teaching certification. If you didn't studying education you can get a tefl/tesol certification instead and that also works.
Things to keep in mind
1. They usually require the tesol/tefl to be at least 100 or 120 hours I believe? Check that before choosing your course and make sure it's a proper, credible course. They aren't cheap but I won't lie, the whole process can be costly. I don't say that to scare, just to be prepared that paperwork involved in applying can cost a pretty penny.
2. I came over through EPIK, you can also come through private academies called 학원 (Hagwons). The process can be different but those are both options that offer different experiences of teaching English.
3. The biggest thing I can say, is come only if you want to teach. I know some people who legit came not because they're interested in tteaching, the culture, the language, or any of that. They either just wanna travel and get annoyed with having a job. Or they just wanna try and meet and get close to kpop idols. The people who don't take it seriously, aren't willing to understand that the culture is different and adapt to that, or complain about having to do a job make the rest of us look bad and are the reason that some schools don't want us.
Lemme know if y'all have any more questions

Fuckity fuckfuck. I have anxiety.
I’m freaking out again about not having a bachelor’s degree and wanting to teach abroad. The visa situation in China is so sketchy and I just don’t know who to trust. One of my contacts just informed me that his company requires prospective employees to have a BA because of the visa regulations, but I know the guy doesn’t have one because he told me so. Additionally, the recruiter for ITEFLA I spoke to on Saturday said that, yes, the opropriate visa does require a BA, but China is so desperate for teachers that it doesn’t really matter.
So I don’t fucking know. There’s so many conflicting things about it online. I guess I should take that as a hint to just not fucking do it without a degree, but I’ve kinda already made up my mind at this point.
I’ve got a call with ITEFLA in less than 12 hours regarding all of this. I’m really hoping they can help me. I know they could be screwing me over for my money, but they honestly have a ton of amazing reviews from many varying sources.

Hi! You mentioned getting a teaching english as a foreign language certification, I was wondering if you did an online course and if you think it would be necessary If I want to apply to teach english in Korea, thanks!
Yes, I got my TEFL (Teaching English as Foreign Language) certificate earlier this year. The course I took included both in-class and online components. I got certified through Oxford Seminars. I definitely recommend if you have the time and money to do it. It’s very comprehensive, yet expensive. My course was $1200 USD and the total amount of money spent getting certified and coming out here was around $2700-3000 USD range. So it’s not cheap to get here, but doable.
If you’re planning to teach in Korea whether it be through EPIK or a private academy (hagwon) you will need a TEFL in order to qualify aside from a valid bachelor’s degree and a whole lot of other paperwork.
EPIK’s process specifically requires TEFLs or TESOLs of certain numbers of hours aside from being from one of the seven native English speaking countries they take applicants from. If you wish to teach in Busan like I do, you will need a TEFL or TESOL with at least 50 in-class hours as the Ministry of Education here requires that of all Native English Teachers.
So TLDR: Yes, you do need a TEFL or TESOL to teach English in Korea.

"I was unimpressed with International TEFL Academy's TEFL program"
International TEFL Academy review, submitted by Angelina. I enrolled in the 11-Week Online TEFL Certification course with the International TEFL Academy (ITA) because I was looking for a TEFL course that combined teaching methodology and teaching practice classes. ITA bill it as its best-selling TEFL course. For the purchase price of $1,299 USD, it was the most expensive online TEFL course I…
