chubby! nikto who likes baking for his neighbor.

after retirement, he packed up his things and flew somewhere balmy and quiet. after a life of running guns and slaughtering the enemy, he wants something simple-- a life where he doesn't need to comprehend the minds of others entirely.

when he moves in, you come over all smiles, a dish of banana bread in your hands. it hurts to admit, but he really does like it-- loves it, even. the dish is licked clean and then scrubbed by his shaky hands as he considers you.

nikto decides that he must bake you something in return. when he isn't busy, he's at the library, perusing through forums of recipes and printing out digitized cookbooks. he doesn't stop until he has a thick binder of ideas and the librarian starts giving him uneasy looks.

he comes to your doorstep one afternoon, your empty dish in one hand and a mississippi mud pie in the other. and he nervously retells the tale of how he indulged in your baking, expecting you to scowl and say that someone his size shouldn't enjoy eating. but you laugh, pleasantly, not meanly, and say that it's fine, really.

you let him into your warm home, and let him sit at your table, not knowing how blood is perpetually etched into his hands. you cut him a slice of his own pie and sit with him. the radio hums as he chews, and birds chirp over the slow trickle of thoughts in his mind. maybe moving somewhere warm really was a good idea.

- Throne of Eldraine -

i have reason to distrust this meat pie thing, not only because of its wails of anguish but it also seems to have burst a bit in the oven. still not honestly opposed, at least the dishes are clean. 5/10.

how does one unpeel a curly banana? why are there sliced-open fruits on what appears to be a stone in the woods? where is the light coming from? i'm going to be taken by the fae and it's not even gonna taste too good while i'm at it, these things look dirty. but idk i don't mind someone else taking the wheel of my life rn. 2/10.

again, concerns about the floor food, but at least it looks more like some deliverygirl got eaten by a wolf and dropped her basket than a trap. someone already took a bite, though, maybe i should leave it be. 4/10

i have been invited to the Goblin King's Feast and while i don't fully agree with his choices i will certainly partake. boar looks wonderful apart from the hair. 7/10

- Commander 2020 / Strixhaven Commander -

i'm pretty sure cattails are poisonous to humans (not to mention the actual poisons in there) so i unfortunately can't oblige gyome's swamp soup. that crusty bread looks pretty nice though. i'll pick this thing apart like high school cafeteria lunch. 3/10.

- Modern Horizons 2 -

i at least know who cooked this one, and i trust asmor a decent bit, but this is still food for demons, so maybe it's not too good for me. goddamn do i wanna know what it tastes like though. 4/10.

- Unfinity -

i'm considering these two together. as a filthy american, i am allured by these fat-filled foods, but as a lad with a tiny stomach, i doubt i could eat enough to feel good about not wasting it. astrotorium's about excess, goddamn. the only funfair burger i've had was the best thing i had eaten in months, but it also made me ill the rest of the day. i really do want some infinity fries though, those look like the golden mean between a steak fry and a curly fry. 6/10.

- March of the Machine Commander -

meanwhile this looks like a texture nightmare. like i respect it, i imagine it's filling and fulfilling, but i don't think i ever could eat more than a bite or two. bread looks a little worse than gyome's but only a little. 5/10.

- Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth -

my white ass loves a charcuterie board. and i'm not going to be intimidated out of it by not eating enough, since it's all in snack-sized bits already. definitely gonna overindulge this sucker. i'm nervous about some of those spreads though. 9/10.

this looks like i'm in a dream, is it actively cooking? or still hot? i can't identify what's in that pan anyway. i'm leaving it alone out of respect. wouldn't mind a drink though. 2/10.

this is not food. for humans. 0/10.

- Wilds of Eldraine -

this is a king's feast i am properly intimidated by. i'm more into it than the Goblin King's, particularly that triple-layer blueberry pie or whatever that is, but i'm going to have to be as polite as possible lest i get a face full of flaming beer. 8/10

i'll probably be eaten before this can eat me, and it barely looks like food, but at least i go down with sugar in the mouth. 1/10.

ogh. that egg looks divine. the bread looks amazing, there's a full glass, i've got like beans or mermaid tears everywhere. we've even got seasonings back there. the best damn breakfast i'll ever have. 10/10.

i would still probably eat this over nothing. there's onion, at least. i will either be hexed or violently ill, but like i could at least get it down. and maybe the witchmother is testing my strength and she'll reward me after slurping an eyeball. a convenient lie to tell myself. 2/10.

- Doctor Who Commander -

y'know, four, i think i would like a copyrighted candy. they look sad and british, which is on point. but like it's not actively killing me like half of these. i think anyway. i don't know doctor who. 6/10.

what is this? i have no idea. custard? raw batter? giant dunkaroo? is he dipping fishsticks? it doesn't look like it's done cooking, like do we need to put it in a fryer again? i'd say it's inedible but it's not poison stew so i have to be nice. 4/10.

get AWAY from me. this is a PERSONAL vendetta. i would rather try to eat spiderwebs. plus he's already eaten half of it. -10/10.

- Fallout Commander -

i can't be too mean since this is literally apocalypse food. i think i prefer this over poison stew? like i recognize it at least, even if it's foul and moldy. man has to eat something. 3/10

i'm not convinced there's actual soda in here. is this just a perspective shot or is this a giant prop soda? i don't like cola anyway. again, worth it in an apocalypse i suppose. 4/10

this soda i trust even less. it glows? does this give me magic powers in the fallout world or does it just kill me slowly? i think it'll kill me slowly anyway. i need fluid to survive in apocalypseland but damn i hate for it to come to this. 2/10.

LUFFY

- He's all for the goofy behavior.

- Seriously, if you can make him smile he's 100% already vibing with you and you make him smile constantly.

- He's always ready to play with you or just listen to you tell jokes.

- People already compare him to the sun, and he never really understood that until he met you.

- He also 100% has a prank war going with you. It's endearing at first but now it's an actual war and the other Strawhats have been picking sides.

- So far you're winning, much to his annoyance. But, he can't pout for too long when he hears your laugh and looks over to be met with such a warm expression on your face.

- If you want an easy way to get to him when he is in a mood, physical comedy gets him a lot. He's a sucker for slapstick. Slip on a banana peel for the man.

- He'll always make sure you aren't hurt afterwards, so no worries! He just... has to stop laughing first.

- You can pout at him all you want after, but it won't do much.

- "C'mon, (Y/N)! You just- and- and the noise you made--" and he's hunched right back over losing his mind.

- Come on, how could you stay mad at him? Well, you can't! Because he finds it so funny, he tries to replicate it so you can see what he saw.

- Ends with you both lying on the deck, cheeks red and heads fuzzy from the lack of air, but genuinely enjoying each others company so much.

- Luffy wouldn't trade the feeling for the world.

USOPP

- Let's be real, he appreciates comedy. And, while he loves childish jokes and acts he also enjoys most other forms (except Robin's).

- But he loves yours!

- He makes a lot of self deprecating jokes at himself, it's his fall back and, while he doesn't do it enough to be concerning, he also doesn't hold back.

- But, none of those jokes last long when you're around!

- Cheesy pickup lines always get him to laugh. Sometimes you might get a blush or a bashful turn-away, but he's always laughing and fighting back chuckles.

- He loves hearing you add onto his tall tales. Commit to this man's bits!! He will love you!

- Get's even more entertaining if you act it out with impressions, play it up with him! Be nerds! Drama kids!

- You can't play any acting game together because you just wind up laughing too much to participate.

- One of his secret favorite things you do to make him laugh is when you sit in his little corner with him and purposely put something together wrong.

- "Y/N, pfft, I- I asked you to make a cube! How- how'd you make a triangle? Where- where's the other piece?"

- This situation is a win all around because it makes him laugh, he gets an ego boost in helping you, and if you really don't know how to build stuff or don't want to then he'll never know!

BUGGY

- As a clown himself, Buggy has been known to appreciate the finer forms of comedy.

- So, needless to say if you throw a pie at someone you're already a star in his book.

- Okay, he might be a little more mature than that and the pie might have to be well timed, but a well time pie throw is still a win! Really, if your timing is pretty good you'll land most jokes with him.

- Not to say everything needs to be timed. Sometimes silly things just happen with him.

- He's a walking shenanigans magnet and if you can double down on that and make it a positive thing for him he'll adore you.

- Plus, you so graciously taking the butt of the captain's jokes and pranks has the rest of his crew and Alvida praising you (mostly due to their mild annoyances to them).

- Buggy does pull pranks by the way. Constantly. But, he always, without fail, get's flustered when you catch him trying to set one up or mid-lie.

- Full body, red faced, you swear you can hear steam coming out of his ears. But, he always ends up laughing with you afterwards. It's funny once he looks back on the scene after a few minutes of denial and he can admit that much at least.

- And, you never laugh at him. Well, not in a bad way. He gets defensive, he's got a sensitive ego and he's greedy; but you only see him as... well, your fun partner in crime!

- That's right. If you've got the confidence to go head-to-head with him then you're officially his partner in crime! You don't really get a choice in this, he'll drag you along with his plans.

- Of course, he takes all the credit for any joke he might pull on the crews. He doesn't want you to get in trouble. Plus, he gets mild entertainment watching them treat you like your innocent.

- It's like having a spy on the inside as you come back to him with everyone's plans and schedules, and you two have a late night planning session.

- "So, if Alvida and Mohji are on the island that leaves--" he turns to face you for some help only to see you mid air plane throw at his head.

- You maintain eye contact for a moment before he grins and suddenly a hand is on your side, tickling you into surrender. "Hah! Try and best me again I dare you!"

synopsis: in which zhongli- a most doting partner- decides to not only surprise you, but personally bake you a cake for your birthday.

Zhongli is- undoubtedly- knowledgeable and adept in various subjects; gliding over words with eloquence. Weaving the mundane and mediocre of every day into tales of raw human experience and tender adoration for the subtle moments of life.

Yet, when it comes to baking, he is quite frankly, doomed to fail in the most comical and disastrous ways.

He once attempted to bake your cultural dish- and burnt it... your apartment fire alarm went off. Not long after, he wanted to create a simple loaf of banana bread, however, when you took a bite, you held back a gag. Salty cookies, bread as hard as stone, tarts that crumble, undercooked muffins, and dough that won't rise. The list goes on.

However, Zhongli has seen the corners of your lips rise like bread as you knead dough with a tenderness and endearment unmistakable to him. Zhongli has seen you peck strawberry after strawberry when baking strudels: a loose childlike passion glowing in your iris like a flower blooming in the light of spring, each time you laugh and say "Just one more."

Flour fights and sticky syrup. Melted butter and vanilla extract. All of that made the struggles of baking sweeter for Zhongli.

Thus, Zhongli crossed his arms like a ladle of pie while his eyebrows knit together: the calendar's date echoed in his mind as does a timer.

There were exactly five months before your birthday and Zhongli desperately wanted to bake a cake.

A cake for you, of course.

That desire echoed through his head; bouncing off the walls of his mind and amplifying in longing as his fingers traced over the memory of your figure in the kitchen baking at night: dim lights, the warmth of cinnamon enveloping the soul, a wool sweater, and street jazz which gradually swayed and erupted in sweet rapture.

Five months, from start to finish, he'll make that cake no matter how much flour smears his face and icing that dots his arms.

Your apartment is serenely quiet, darkness blanketing the walls as the liminal coolness of a spring night ushers itself in like a friend through an open window.

You heave a sigh. Gradually slipping your shoes off; balancing the small gifts in your palms like gems. You don't bother to flick the lights on, opting for ambient lighting found in your living room. However, as your feet bare the face of your cool wooden floor, the living room light flickers on and so does the warmth growing in your chest; readily awaiting to break the moment you step out of your body, taking the new form of blossom.

"Oh, Zhongli..."

Zhongli smiles gently, poignancy and subtle fear arising in his body, "Hello love."

You set the gifts down, your steps deliberate and unhurried, as if you were walking on glass, or the space between reality and a dream, the aroma of strawberries, vanilla and lemon consuming you whole. However, not before leaving you longing for more and soothing the ache from the soles of your feet after a long day. Inviting you back again and again to the tender layers of cake and frosting.

"Zhongli how did you...?"

"Bake the cake?" finishes Zhongli with a humorous smile on his lips, the flame of the candle wavering slightly. "I can confidently say it tastes just as wonderfully as it looks."

You emit a lighthearted giggle, your cheeks aching from the extent of the grin brought to your face. "Love you- you didn't have to-"

"But I wanted to," he interjects, balancing the cake in one hand as his other gingerly caresses your cheek. "Because you deserve it and much, much more."

From there, silence stirs and the faint beating of hearts loosens your joints and time mellows with each passing minute. From there Zhongli lifts the cake, and with one simple breath, you blow the candle. A wisp of smoke a spirit of tender solace.

Zhongli places the cake down before opening his arms and the two of you interlock, becoming one; molding together into one languid breath of life, drawn together by sugar, flour, and butter. You bury yourself in his shoulder, your arms reaching out to run through the rivers of his deep brown hair. "Tell me," you begin in a mere mutter, "How exactly did you bake the cake?"

Zhongli laughs quietly his hands rubbing circles on your back, "We can touch on that later my dear."

You hum in response, the two of you standing there amidst the songs of the streets whisking itself through the air, amidst the electrifying touch of another breaking and spreading like the yolk of an egg kissing a mixture of sugar, butter, baking power and bliss. And amidst the warmth of the heart rising like that of an oven. Heart in hand; being kneaded together into one unified loaf of bread.

"Happy birthday, my dearest."

Oh cool. I think this was Yoyo's cottage. That's probably her pear tree with what is clearly a person imprisoned within it, ala Shopkeeper's "magic pear tree that imprisons those who steal from it" tale.

Wonder what ever happened to her? Probably died, I'm guessing. The Three Sisters are a weird metaphysical thing that happened one time but they aren't, like, immortal deities or something. I'm pretty sure they can grow old and die.

One hidden talent of theirs: He can pick pretty much anything up with his feet, no problem.

One thing they've kept since childhood days: A huge stuffed monkey named Mr. Bananas that his parents gave him when he was six.

Their favourite holiday memory: Thanksgiving when he was thirteen, when his grandmother ended an argument between two of his aunts by starting a food fight that ended with the entire family covered in pumpkin pie and mashed potatoes.

Their first crush: Mike Rutherford, when they were just in second grade.

Something they would never admit to anybody: That he has more than once fantasized about pushing Sue off of a building.

Their favourite wild animal: Raccoons.

A funny thing or two happened on the way to Square Lake

If it's all the same to you, even with Hokey Wolf, Ding-a-Ling, Wally Gator and Squiddly Diddly joining Peter Potamus for "that ceremony" in the depths of Square Lake in Washington County, Minnesota via The Magic Balloon, our own run from Wall Drug thus couldn't have been rather predictable, heading eastward via I-90 and reaching Hwy. 60 (Minnesota Exit 45 in Worthington), then on Hwy. 60 to Mankato, picking up US 169 to reach the Twin Cities (largely out of a desire for a short, yet direct, route) ... just under 350 miles between Wall Drug and Worthington alone, about six hours' drive--

About halfway between Wall Drug and the Minnesota-South Dakota line:

HUCKLEBERRY HOUND, somewhat surprised: If I heard correctly, Snag, didn't you actually manage to book The Banana Splits into this here Corn Palace in Mitchell? MOI: So I did ... so I did! And it turned out that the tour bus of the Splits needed to be tuned up and serviced; admittedly, they were at loose ends and were restless to perform. What more interesting venue, locale even, than the World's Only Corn Palace? HUCKLEBERRY HOUND, over another sip of Wall Drug's coffee as still managed to hold its warmth: Just be thankful they never called it the Corn Palace from the corny acts they booked over the years.... Which was enough to call for a stop at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, if but to ogle at the sheer wonder of the artwork crafted out of corn and prairie grasses in homage to agriculture--and what could have made Augie Doggie in particular all the more giddy, especially when that tale about bringing The Banana Splits to the Corn Palace on short notice came along?

Follow that with some gas and groceries to get us onward ... and into Minnesota at last. Not to mention such interesting stuff awaiting us as includes not only that ceremony with Peter Potamus underwater, but also the Braham Pie Day Character Convocation ... the Minnesota State Fair, even ... but still, maybe a day at the Mall of America in the interim, especially before the Minnesota State Fair Campground is ready and viable?

And oh yes, imagining what the ceremony underwater will be like.

Malik: Oh, is it that late already? I guess time really does fly when you're having fun. This hasn't been a bad trip, considering it was planned so suddenly. Hubert: Yes, we've been able to enjoy ourselves without any issues. This "men's" trip has been surprisingly relaxing. Asbel: All those sightseeing spots were pretty impressive, too. Next time we should invite Cheria and Pascal and everyone, and all go together! Hubert: Yes, I agree. Malik: How about getting some souvenirs? Do we want to split up and meet back here when we're done shopping? Asbel: Oh, yeah… We've probably each got something we want to buy. Hubert: Then let's meet back here in one hour. Asbel: Okay!

Asbel: …Oof. This is heavy… Hubert: Of course it is, with that much stuff crammed in it. Malik: This city seems to be famous for its souvenirs. Did you see all the sweets? If you want good treats, this is the place to go. It's quite common for people to buy too much. Hubert: There certainly were a lot of famous confectioneries. Asbel: Yeah, Cheria asked me to pick up some stuff. When I told her we were coming here, she was pretty adamant that we make sure to buy some. Malik: Hey, did you get something for Pascal?
