today is t day so i'm having gay little trans steddie thoughts,,,

steve and eddie both being transmasc & socially transitioned, but haven't started hrt or anything yet-- it's a lot of work and the us fucking sucks so, what can ya do? but then steve gets a prescription for t and he starts it, and eddie's over every time steve has to do his shot. not on purpose-- or at least, steve doesn't think it's on purpose? but like clockwork, he gets out his supplies and gets his dose into the syringe, and while he waits for the rubbing alcohol to dry on the area pre-sticking himself, eddie's right at his side, perched on a seat next to him like some kind of weird owl.

last week he was standing on the table above steve, far enough away that the needle couldn't get him(it wouldn't have, anyways), but close enough that he gets a good view of steve doing his injection

steve just lets him watch, every time, and finally, after a few weeks of noticing eddie's big ole eyes staring at his thigh while he does his injections, he asks why he does that

"do what?" eddie asks, tilting his head like a confused puppy

"always watch me, man. you're giving me the heebie jeebies like some kind of owl or something" steve responds while he gets his gauze & bandaid ready

eddie laughs and rests his head on one of his hands, "well--- yanno, if i ever... decide this is something i wanna do, maybe watching you do it every time will make the needles less scary."

steve shakes his head with a smile, "i guess that makes sense? are you ready then?"

eddie nods, his focus going back to the syringe steve's picked up as steve readies himself and does his injection-- perfectly normal, like always.

What is sports do you guys like?

RYUICHI: Surfing,boxing and tennis. I'm the type who has to play the sport themselves or they wont be satisfied.

SUGIZO: Boxing, ah but I'd like to try scuba-diving or sky diving!

INORAN: If it's just watching sports then i like them all

J: Soccer. watching the Olympics (laughs)

SHINYA: i like watching people play sports, because you can feel that person's determination and passion while watching

What is your favorite time of the day?

RYUICHI: Right before falling asleep.

SUGIZO: At night. my body gets a surge of energy, even the rough nights, the lonely quiet nights, everything starts at night.

INORAN: Dusk.

J: It has nothing to do with the time of the day, but whenever I'm in my bed i feel happy

SHINYA: Morning, when I've just woken up. It's rough, but i enjoy thinking about what to do for the day.

RYUICHI: I don't smoke. as for wine i drink white Italian wine or white German wine. for whisky i enjoy 12 year old Canadian club whiskey.

SUGIZO: for cigarettes, JPS. my recent favorite is a vodka base cocktail, or like a vodka martini.

INORAN: about 3 boxes of Kent milds. for alcohol as long as it's good Japanese sake I'm fine. how much i drink/smoke depends on the time and place (laughs)

J: 3 boxes of caster milds. for alcohol, lots of beer, vodka, wine, honestly anything (laughs)

J: I haven't watched any recently but "RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT" was really heartwarming, i liked it.

SHINYA: I haven't had time to watch movies. i have a sets of laser discs but i haven't watched a single one of them.

What's your ultimate dream woman?

RYUICHI: A girl who seems normal at first but when she talks she seems a bit stand offish, but a they still have a childish part about them.

SUGIZO: Vanessa Paradis or Sophie Marceau. oh! and Carole Bouquet, for some reason they're all french..

INORAN: I don't have an ideal and I don't really care about appearance, I just want someone who can sympathize/empathize(TN: honestly not sure if the difference matters here lol) with me

J: i think that someone who is put together/independent and is actively trying to fulfill their goal is wonderful.

SHINYA: I admire the idea of being a women. because emotionally speaking it's something i could never be, so i want to know more about them.

Do you guys have any pets, and if not what pet would u like to raise?

RYUICHI: I've started raising 2 dogs, one's a Pomeranian and the other one's a miniature sheep dog.

SUGIZO: Turtles. They're a something-something akamimi turtle (red ear slider) or something like that, they're really cute! by the way they're names are Mickey and Malorie ((TN: he named them based off the two main characters in the movie "natural born killers"))

INORAN: 2 cats. there's a lot of animals that id like to have as pets though, like a dog or a fish... oh yeah, a wolf.

J: I'd want to have a dog as a pet but having an owl as a pet also sounds nice cus they're awake at the same time i am (laughs) letting them sit on my shoulder and then going for walks (laughs)

SHINYA: i have a hamster. if i were to have a pet in the future probably a big fluffy dog, like a golden retriever.

RYUICHI: The first thing you see when you walk in my house is probably the lights, but i do have a stone statue placed there as well.

SUGIZO: I have an art piece that my friend made.

INORAN: i have a lot of stuff, like pictures, framed art, lamps etc

J: I don't have a lot of decorations in my house. ah! but i do have a bass that was made the year i was born laying around.

Promise Edwards, a single mother of three living in Laurens, South Carolina, spends her spare time passing QR codes out to schools, churches and members of her local community. Scan one, and you'll be led to an online document full of LGBTQ+ resources across the state — which Edwards hopes to expand to a nationwide list by 2024. 

The heart-shaped codes — on stickers, embedded in keychains, printed on T-shirts and more — are sometimes adorned with sparkles or owls because, according to Edwards, they were "Jacob's favorite thing."

Edwards, known as Aunt Lulu to 18-year-old Jacob Williamson, welcomed the newly out teen into her home after he was kicked out of his own. 

"The day after he moved in with me, he said, 'I'm trans, and I go by he/him and I want to be called Jacob,'" said Edwards, whose mother had been Edwards' childhood best friend. "I said, 'OK. I love you,'"

"He was only allowed to be himself for 28 days."

Four weeks after Williamson went to live with Edwards in June, he went missing after going to meet up with online friends for the first time. 

Edwards had begged him not to go, even asking her boss to change his shift at the Waffle House where they both worked to make scheduling harder — but Jacob was unconvinced. He shared his location with Edwards through an app, got in the car and left.

It was the last time Edwards would see him alive. 

After she could neither get in touch with him nor see his updated location, Edwards reported him missing and spent the next four days talking to law enforcement, hanging posters, and frantically searching for Williamson. She knocked on doors, passed out flyers and posted online — but to no avail. 

His body was discovered by police on the side of a South Carolina road — just three days before Edwards' 37th birthday.

Williamson was at least the 14th trans person murdered in the U.S. in 2023, against a worrying backdrop of statistics that show trans people are more at risk than ever, despite only making up an estimated 0.5% of the U.S. population.

Data compiled shows 320 trans and gender-diverse people were reported murdered between October 2022 and September 2023, according to nonprofit Transgender Europe, though actual numbers could be even higher. 

Ninety-four percent of the victims were trans feminine people or transgender women — meaning they were not assigned female at birth — and three-quarters were younger adults, between the ages of 19 and 40.

"Most victims were Black and trans women of colour, and trans sex workers," stated the report, its Nov. 13 publication intentionally coinciding with the start of Trans Awareness Week. 

The week culminates each year in Trans Day of Remembrance, which was founded on Nov. 20, 1999, by trans advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith, to honor Rita Hester, a trans woman who had been killed the year before. The vigil honored Hester and the deaths of all the other trans people who had been lost to violence that year, according to GLAAD.

"It's a day to honor and remember the folks that have died, but it's also a chance for us to reckon with, where do we go from here?" said Arielle Rebekah, communications consultant at the Transgender Law Center. 

"Every day is the day to think of a way forward," they said.

Mariah Moore, the co-director of policy and programs at the Transgender Law Center, agreed and reflected on how imperative it is for allies to show up for trans people. 

"A lot of folks are very vulnerable and feel alone and isolated," she says. "You could change the trajectory of someone's life by simply saying something — letting them know that they have someone ... that is also standing beside them, willing to fight for them." 

In addition to her work at the Transgender Law Center, Moore is also one of the co-founders of an organization called House of Tulip, which was born during the COVID-19 pandemic and works to find long-term housing solutions for trans and gender non-conforming people in Louisiana, where she is based.

"The goal is to help folks build a stable foundation so that they can have access to the futures that come so easily to others," she says, adding that the organization is a shining reflection of successful "coalition work;" identifying a cycle and working to fill a need by collaborating with others and sharing knowledge and resources. 

In the U.S., 586 anti-trans bills have been introduced in state legislatures this year alone, and aim to restrict or completely ban access to gender-affirming care, rid trans youth of the ability to participate in sports, arts and clubs — and in more extreme cases, even threaten parents with child abuse charges for affirming their kids' gender identities.

In the current tenuous political climate, the mental health of LGBTQ+ youth is worsening, according to the results of a national survey by The Trevor Project, which found that 41% of LGBTQ+ young people had seriously considered suicide in the past year. Additionally, youth who are transgender, nonbinary and/or people of color reported higher rates of suicidal ideation than their cisgender and White peers.

"I feel that Jacob was not targeted because he was trans, but yet, he was targeted because he was trans," says Edwards. "These people preyed on the fact that Jacob was partially out; that Jacob was ostracized from his family; that he had nobody but me and my family."

Since Williamson's murder, Edwards says that while many in her life — including close friends and family — have turned their backs on her, the trans community has embraced her with open arms as she continues to fight for justice for Jacob.

"I really just wish we could have had this support when Jacob was alive," she said. "And we probably wouldn't even be talking right now." 

But further data from The Trevor Project provides a glimmer of hope for others within the trans and gender non-conforming community: youth who reported gender-affirming school and home environments reported significantly decreased rates of suicidal ideation — with actions as small as being addressed by their correct pronouns, having access to gender-neutral bathrooms or being able to wear gender-affirming clothing making a noticeable difference.

As Rebekah puts it, "Even in the face of this violence, we are thriving."

"Yes, we might be under attack," adds Moore. "But guess what? We've also fought back. And we're winning." 

Each year, though violence against the community soars, young people are increasingly identifying as trans and seeing themselves reflected in culture, including in film, television and literature. Transgender Day of Visibility is even now recognized by the White House.

"My life is great," says YouTube star Eden Estrada, also known by her online alias, Eden the Doll. "I had a hiccup, but my life is good."

In August 2020, video depicting a violent attack on Estrada and two of her friends was posted online, where it quickly went viral and became national news overnight.

While waiting for an Uber in Los Angeles, Estrada alleges that the trio was beaten and robbed, with one of Estrada's friends knocked unconscious in the fray. The LAPD later investigated the incident as a hate crime.

"I'm grateful to be alive," says Estrada. "I've been through something traumatic, but I came out of it really, really, strongly."

Estrada is now happily engaged, has a flourishing career and in her own words, is "over" what happened to her. But reflecting on Trans Day of Remembrance, she recognizes this could have been a different story.

"This day, it could be about me," says Estrada. "Something worse could have happened to me that day."

Estrada said that she uses this day not only to reflect on loss, but to reflect on the LGBTQ+ figures who paved the way for trans people today — people like Marsha P. Johnson, Sylvia Rivera and Erica Andrews, she said, adding that she also uses this day to reflect on past versions of herself as well.

"I think it's remembering where you started, where you're at and where you're going," she said.

Rebekah feels similarly about Trans Day of Remembrance, which they say is an opportunity to elevate stories of trans joy and triumph.

"People need to see that trans folks are also changemakers; are also leaders; are also successful across all fields, across all industries, across all areas of life."

When asked how she will be spending Trans Day of Remembrance, Moore says, "I need to take time to really mourn some of the folks that I've lost recently, and just take time for myself as a Black trans woman... honor myself and the work that I'm doing."

"I think this year, I need some time for me."

It has been nearly five months since Williamson's body was recovered. 

The two people he went to meet that day were both arrested and charged in his death, but that's not enough for Edwards. "These people still get to talk to their families on Christmas," she said.

"And we don't."

She says she will be keeping Williamson's memory alive on Trans Day of Remembrance by hanging Christmas decorations at the site where his body was found and attending an event in honor of the day at the University of South Carolina Upstate, where she has been invited to speak.

While Williamson and at least 319 others who have been lost to violence this year will be in hearts and minds on Trans Day of Remembrance, Moore points out that countless trans people have also been lost to lack of basic resources like housing, healthcare and food.

"It's important that we uplift those stories and use Trans Day of Remembrance...to let folks know that trans people are loved and have people fighting for them," she adds. "Don't be silent when you see injustice is happening."

Edwards believes Trans Day of Remembrance is an opportunity to provide support in death for trans loved ones that they may not have had in life, and bring attention to the fact that nobody is above experiencing loss.

"It means awareness that this actually happens to people that we know and we love," she says.

But more than anything, Edwards hopes wherever Williamson is now, on this day and all days, that he is at peace.

"He had a life full of conditions," she says. "I hope that where he is, he feels love. Unconditional love."

Okay, so I thought of two ways to rewrite the Sam and Nightshade scene to make it more interesting. But first I'd like to talk about why it didn't work for me.

Needs a conflict.

Sam needs better characterization.

(I know Sam is a one-off character who isn't going to get five pages of backstory. But Stevie was a one-off character in this same episode, and we got a lot more from him. Even a mini character arc.)

Okay, let's go!

Scenario #1:

I think Sam needs to bring the conflict to the scene. And one way to do that would to have her be biased against Transformers--in a more aggro way than Stevie, like a foil to him.

(Sidenote, I thought Sam deciding that she could trust Nightshade because they're nonbinary--not because they saved her from a mugger--was extremely silly. Queer robots can be evil; trans Skywarp would squash you where you stand.)

So in this scenario, Sam is less mild mannered and more of a punk. Leather jacket covered with patches with studs all over it! Chains around her neck! Wild hair! T-shirt with the arms ripped off and "SHE / THEY" written on it in magic marker. The "SHE" starts with the Stussy S that we all drew in middle school.

Punk Sam actually tries to fight the guy mugging her, but Nightshade sees the mugger has a gun and swoops in to save her.

So Sam is on the roof with Nightshade, putting up her dukes and trash-talking to cover how scared she is of this giant robot.

Sam: You want some of this, you dirty 'Con? I'll punch you so hard you'll fly all the way back to your home planet!

Nightshade: Please don't, I fear you will injure your hand. And for your information I am not a Decepticon and I am on my home planet. Rude.

Sam: Oh please! Everyone knows all the flying robots are bad guys.

Nightshade (raises an eyebrow): That is a gross generalization. And why exactly did this 'bad guy' robot *puts their fingers on their chest with a flourish* prevent you from being grievously injured by a miscreant?

Sam (reluctantly lowers her fists): Eh, I could've handled him. Why do you talk like that? You swallow a dictionary, green bean?

Nightshade: If only one could absorb words so easily! No, I simply read a lot. Though it does mean my siblings don't always understand me . . .

Sam: Buddy, you and me both.

And then Sam and Nightshade bond, and it turns out Sam has three brothers, one of whom doesn't respect that she's nonbinary and keeps calling her "little lady" to taunt her. Nightshade is shocked by the thought of family being unsupportive, but consoles her and encourages her to focus on the support of her two other siblings, of her friends, and most importantly to have faith in herself. (Also they paraphrase Tarantulas during this part because we love a callback.)

Nightshade is thrilled to learn the word "nonbinary", and before Sam departs, she self-consciously asks Nightshade if they can give her a ride in their owl form.

Nightshade: *arches a brow* Are you sure you want a ride from an "evil" flying Transformer?

Sam: Whaaat? Who said that? Point me at 'em, I'll punch their lights out.

Nightshade: *chuckles and transforms* That won't be necessary.

So Nightshade drops off Sam in her neighborhood, and the twist is that Stevie is actually one of Sam's (supportive) brothers, and she spots him just as he finishes changing the graffiti to "Transformers are home", and she nods approvingly.

Scenario #2:

Non-punk Sam; she looks the same as in the show except her pins are mostly space related, and in addition to the "she/they" pin she has one that says "nonbinary." Sam is also going to provide the conflict in this scenario, but this time the conflict is internal, as we will see.

So Nightshade saves Sam from the mugger and hovers in midair with Sam in their hand, fifty feet above the ground. This version of Sam doesn't quietly freeze when she's scared, she flips out.

Sam: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

Nightshade: It's all right, you're safe now. :D

Sam: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Nightshade: Er, my name is Nightshade, my pronouns are--

Sam: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Nightshade (more and more desperate to calm Sam down, sees a pin on Sam's bag): Oh, "nonbinary"! That's a computer language, is it not?

Sam (stops screaming with comedic abruptness): Um, no? It means people who aren't female or male.

Nightshade (delighted): Oh my . . . like me!

Sam: Whoa, really? Me too. I mean . . . *gestures towards pins* . . . obviously, ha ha.

Sam: . . . *looks at the ground, still far below*

Sam: AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Cut to a scene of the other Maltos, then cut back to Sam and Nightshade, who have now landed on a roof and are chatting comfortably. Sam is into astronomy and Nightshade, Science Nerd, is happy to learn new science facts.

Nightshade: . . . and so a moderate star such as our own sun can eventually expand into a much larger Red Giant? How wondrous! Oh, I must tell my siblings all this . . . *sighs* Yet I wonder if it will keep their interest.

Sam: *laughs* Science isn't everyone's thing, but there are lots of ways to enjoy the stars, you know? When I was little my parents and I would lie in the grass and look at the constellations.

Nightshade: The what?

Sam: Look, I'll show you *points* Trace a line between those four stars--

Nightshade: How?

Sam: *smiles* Just in your mind. They form a rectangle, right? Now look at that line of three stars beside it and imagine they're a handle. That's the Big Dipper. And the Little Dipper pours into it.

Nightshade: In my mind as well?

Sam: *laughs* Exactly. You have to use your imagination. Some people see them as something totally different, like bears or caribou, all kinds of things . . . and some constellations are even more abstract. Like check out Aries, the ram. *traces it in the sky* And over there, that's Tauros the bull. Those two stars are his horns, that one's his eye--

Nightshade: *gasps* Isn't a bull similar to a cow? Oh, I must show Tauros to my siblings! Praytell, are there any owls?

Sam: Not that you can see from here-- *phone buzzes as she receives a text* Hang on a sec . . . My mom's asking where I am.

Nightshade: Oh dear, I did not mean to make your family worry.

Sam: *finishes texting back* It's cool, I told her I'll be a little late 'cause I'm hanging with a friend.

Nightshade: *looks extremely flattered / pleased* I can give you a ride home, if you wish.

Sam: That would be great! Just one sec . . . *is removing the 'she/they' and 'nonbinary' pins from her bag and putting them in a side pocket*

Nightshade: Why are you removing your adornments?

Sam: Oh, uh, it's just . . . I don't want my parents to see, you know?

Nightshade: No, I do not. *clasps hands around knee, tilts head* Is it a surprise?

Sam: More like a secret.

Nightshade: They do not know you're nonbinary? *concerned* Would that upset them?

Sam: Oh, no. My parents are cool, they wouldn't be mad. It's just . . . *clasps her hands together, looks down at her lap* I don't know. I've always been 'their little girl' and I don't want to ruin that for them.

Nightshade: I don't understand. You are who you are. *remembers Tarantulas's words* And it is a gift to know yourself so young.

Sam: I think I know myself, but what if . . . *bites her lip* What if I tell my parents and then it turns out all their expectations were right and I was wrong? What if I disappoint them over nothing?

Nightshade: Perhaps they will not think that seeking the truth is nothing', or ''disappointing'? Regardless of what that truth turns out to be?

Sam: *sighs heavily* Sometimes it's just easier to be what you 'should' be. What people expect.

Nightshade: . . . *gazes at the sky* How beautiful are the stars.

Sam: Yeah . . .

Nightshade: Why, Sam! You were playing a joke on me, weren't you? There is an owl constellation.

Sam: *slight smile* Sorry N.S., not in this hemisphere.

Nightshade: I must correct you. I see it clearly. *traces stars with their finger* There is the wing . . . the eyes burning brightly . . . and another wing. Sentry, the Owl.

Sam: That's not a real constellation. You just . . . made it up.

Nightshade: What makes it less real than a crooked line that people call a ram or a rectangle they see as a bear? *deftly picks the she/they pin out of the side pocket* What makes this *puts their finger on 'she'* more real than this? *puts their finger on 'they'*

Sam: . . . *stares at the pin, then the stars, eyes wet*

49 days of summer camp left

Caroline sat in her bed, hugging her knees against her chest. Her and JJ had the afternoon off and despite his attempts to lure her into hanging out, and her infatuation with the boy, she’d turned him down, wanting to spend a few hours alone with herself to compose her thoughts. It had been exactly two weeks since the night Madison disappeared. No one had bothered to mess with the campers since then, the bonfire area hadn’t been touched and no dead animals were found in anyone’s suitcase. To the rest of the camp, this seemed like victory; to Caroline – it seemed like the calm before the storm.

During their first day at Camp Willowdale, all of the counselors had been given a Willowdale-branded set of items they’d have to use during their stay. It came with the obvious STAFF t-shirts, sweaters and hats, but it also consisted of other things – such as the thermoses Caroline and JJ were still using to sneak whiskey into their daily routines, and notebooks in which they were advised to plan out their group’s daily schedules. Caroline however had been using her notebook for other purposes. She’d become so obsessed with Madison’s case, that every little thing that happened on camp grounds and seemed even a little out of the ordinary, immediately became a clue to her, which she’d hastily scribble down in her notebook. It had only been two weeks since the disappearance of Madison Hague and Caroline had already filled about a quarter of the pages of her hefty notebook with potential clues and leads. She kept rereading her notes, trying to think of something – anything – that they could do to help them solve the mystery, however nothing was coming to her. Ever since the dress incident, Caroline and her friends hadn’t found anything else that could relate to Madison, though Caroline was glad that none of them had given up on their mission.

Caroline was so deep in her own thoughts, she nearly jumped at the sound of a sudden knock on the door. She quickly closed her notebook and tucked it under her mattress and went to open the door, revealing a panting JJ leaning on the doorframe.

“Hey, C,” he breathed.

“JJ, what’re you doing here? I told you I -”

JJ cut her off by pushing past her and walking into her cabin, “Yeah, yeah, you wanna be alone, I know,” he sat on her bed, taking his snapback off, “but I was thinking… you’ve been so busy with the kids and with the whole Madison thing, and believe me – I really appreciate you for being like that, but -”

Caroline crossed her arms, “Where are you going with this?”

JJ sighed, “You’ve just totally forgotten how to have fun, C,” he said, “The primary reason that we all came here was to have fun and look at you – you barely eat, or sleep, or do anything other than your counselor duties and this whole Madison investigation thing…” JJ sighed again, looking at the hat in his lap and playing with its adjustable strap, “All I’m saying, C, is what if Madison really did go home and you’ve just wasted all this energy on nothing…Thing is,” JJ looked up into her eyes, “I miss you, the old you, and I know that that you’s still somewhere in there, it’s just this whole Madison thing blocking it.” he placed the hat back on his head and stood up, walking towards Caroline, “Hang out with me now,” he said, stopping directly in front of her and lifting her chin up so that she was facing him, “And I promise we’ll think about Madison later,”

Caroline couldn’t really process what was going on. JJ was touching her and standing in such an intimate distance from her, that she could basically feel his breath on her face. For a second she forgot all about Madison, and the dead owl, and the bonfire area. All she could think about was JJ Maybank, who had just told her that he misses her and wants to “hang out with her”. Caroline stood there, lost in thought. What if he was right? What if Madison really did go home and that dress never even belonged to her? What if it was Jenna Kinley’s all along and Sarah had just gotten the perfume wrong? What if JJ really did miss her because he liked her as more than a friend? No, no, that couldn’t be it. But what if –

“Um, Carrie?” JJ’s voice suddenly broke her out of her trans, “So d’you wanna do something together or -”

“Yes!” she said, a little too excitedly for her own taste, of course I’d like to hang out with you, JJ, she thought, “What do you want to do?”

JJ’s face immediately lit up at her words, “Well I was thinking perhaps a picnic?”

Caroline raised an eyebrow, “Don’t picnics require food? We don’t have access to anything unless it’s mealtime,”

“Yeah, but we do have whiskey,” JJ winked with a mischievous look on his face, walking towards the storage room of the girls’ cabin where they still had a few bottles of alcohol left.

Caroline rolled her eyes but smiled nonetheless – this was going to finally be her first date with JJ Maybank. Well, sort of.

The afternoon sun was low in the sky, casting a beautiful orange reflection onto the peaceful water of lake Willowdale. Caroline and JJ had taken a seat on the lakefront, drinking their whiskeys and admiring the sunset, reminiscing the days when they were kids again.

“D’you remember that one summer when Rafe Cameron got food poisoning and ended up barfing on stage at the Will-all-hail banquet?” JJ laughed at the memory.

Caroline frowned, thinking about it, “Beats having Rafe Cameron as your counselor by a mile,”

JJ turned to look at her, eyebrows raised, “Rafe was a counselor here?” his tone almost sounding amused.

Caroline nodded, “Oh yeah,” she smirked, “For the same reason as Sarah – too stuck up for his own good so their dad shipped him over here as a punishment,”

JJ snorted, “I mean that family is pretty far up their own ass,”

“They have a sister too,” said Caroline, “I haven’t seen her around here though, so we at least know that one of them must be doing something right,”

The pair laughed at the thought of their spoiled friend and her older brother.

“Man, I missed this place,” said JJ suddenly, leaning back on his elbows.

His tone sounded different as he looked at the horizon and Caroline could sense that something wasn’t right, “Yeah, I’ve been meaning to ask -”

“Parents got divorced,” JJ quickly explained, “And unfortunately for me, my dad got custody,” he sighed, “Somehow my mom was deemed ‘incapable’ of taking care of me because she couldn’t financially afford to. Load of bullshit, if you ask me,”

“But my mom -”

“Yeah, they still talk,” said JJ, knowing what Caroline was about to say, “I still see my mom every other weekend, you know, it’s not the end of the world,” he smiled at Caroline reassuringly, “It’s just living with my old man meant working for my cut at home, which also meant summer jobs back in Kildare,”

“So that’s where you’ve been all this time…” whispered Caroline, mostly to herself, however JJ heard her.

“Yeah,” he responded, “Now that I’m old enough to be a counselor here and actually get paid for coming to summer camp I thought why not? Besides, your mom did tip mine off that you’d be here too,” he winked at Caroline, making her blush.

“Yeah, about that,” she said apologetically, “My mom likes to yap a lot, I wouldn’t take most of what she says seriously,”

“Well you are here, aren’t you?” said JJ, his face slightly leaning in towards Caroline’s.

Holy shit, this was it. Caroline was about to kiss JJ Maybank after a decade of fawning over him. Shit, shit, shit, she hadn’t really kissed anyone since that idiot from her class planted one on her at prom. What if she was a bad kisser? What if she’d forgotten how to kiss? As JJ closed his eyes and leaned even closer, Caroline decided to push the doubtful thoughts to the side as she closed her eyes too, leaning in towards him too. “There you are!” Sarah’s loud voice came from the hill behind them, startling them and making them both jump and immediately pull apart and straighten up. John B stumbled after her.

Caroline coughed awkwardly, trying to cover up the shame and embarrassment she was currently feeling, “Sarah… what are you doing here?”

With a knowing smirk on her face, Sarah put both hands on her hips, “Nothing,” she sing-sang, obviously finding the whole situation hilarious, “I’m sure it can wait,” she winked down at Caroline, while John B was waving around frantically behind Sarah at JJ, mouthing the words “DID YOU BONE?!” quite obviously.

JJ groaned as he stood up, helping Caroline up as well, “We’re all yours now, Sarah, what’s up?”

“Well me and John B had the afternoon free as well, so we went out front to his van and you’ll never believe what was taped to the door,”

“Wait, why’d you go to his van in the first place?”

Sarah rolled her eyes, “That’s beside the point now, Carrie, look” she shoved a piece of paper in the girl’s hands.

As Caroline unfolded the paper, the group gathered around her to look at what was written on it - 41° 56’ 54.3732” N, 87° 39’ 19.2024” W.

“I have no idea what that means though,” confessed Sarah.

“Looks like coordinates to me,” said JJ.

“Hey, that’s what I said!” gasped John B, “But Sarah didn’t want to believe me,”

“Does anyone know how to read geographical coordinates?” JJ looked at his friends.

“Do I look like Google Maps to you?” asked Sarah.

“You’re right,” Caroline said as an idea sparked in her mind, “We can’t read coordinates, but I know someone who can,”

“I’m just saying, Miss P,” JJ spoke confidently once the group was inside Pricilla’s office, “Now’s about the best time to host the traditional yearly treasure hunt,”

“Don’t you think it’s a bit odd that it’s already been two weeks and none of these kids can read a compass yet?” continued JJ, earning a slow nod from the camp director, “Think about it, Miss P – Willowdale ain’t Willowdale without its treasure hunt,”

As JJ spoke, the rest of the group were silently praying behind him that his charismatic way with manipulating will work on Pricilla, giving them an excuse to ask her to decipher the mysterious coordinates they had gotten their hands onto. The old lady leaned back in her old leather chair and looked at JJ skeptically for a while, adding to the already built up tension.

“Give me a few days to map out the course and set up the coordinates,” she finally spoke, causing everyone in the group to silently cheer behind JJ. As they thanked her and turned to leave, she spoke up again, “Oh, and Maybank,” she called, everyone turning to look at her, “No funny business,”

Who is involved? Describe your intended work

Eleanor Díaz Ritson -

I will make large, water-based oil paintings on suspended, ‘patchwork’ cotton duck canvas. Painted tapestries (2 artworks: 98.4 x 120 cm each).  I use a non-traditional oil painting style, influenced by raw material, charcoal drawings , woodcuts, and other traditionally water-based media. I am a figurative painter, representing my own image to communicate through gesture and expression. 

I explore sociality as a land-space-place; the tangible body as land, and the intangible social culture as space–place. In this way, the outward expressions of force applied in social interactions are likened to the movements of energy that sculpt geological land-bodies. Through evolutionary ‘deep time’, our social interactions sculpt our bodies and minds too. 

She exists in an interior landscape. A space where She is: 

Dew dripped mountain crag. Squelching, slimy swamp. Beaten and carved cavity. Patient, molten core.

Rippling ash cloud. Salt scarred cliff face. Frozen and glistening glacial shard.

Ruby Wilkinson - 

I intend to make paintings from memories, learning more about the unconscious. Memories are constantly changing, moving and evolving in people’s minds; creating endless false realities and recollections. I want to make work about social interactions, experiences, encounters and moments I have personally experienced in my life. 

Two large scale paper drawings, 150cm x 100 cm. Using abstract drawing techniques combined with paint manipulation of paper there will be a balance of chance and control.

Steph Arrowsmith - 

I intend to create large- scale prints which float in the space between figuration and abstraction and subvert traditional processes of image reproduction. I am exploring the potential for the prints being integrated with strange acid- etched sculptural metal frames. 

I am influenced presently by early print imagery which depicts dark religious fantasies of apocalypse and doomsday, and the artificial realities constructed through reproduced colonial imagery of endemic avifauna, flora and landscape. I want to explore ideas around the fragile and intricate biosphere in the in-between space of devastating degradation and utopic regeneration,  phenomena and noumena, and ghosts of past and apparitions of future coexisting as unseen undercurrents of accepted material reality. 

Trantham Gordon - 

The work that I intend to continue working through explores the redevelopment of image and SPACE. The sculptural object contains the tools to create a reconstruction of the world surrounding it, as the surroundings contain movement, so in turn, does the image. 

In reality this object is a camera (built out of several cameras amongst other technologies). 

The use of these technologies create a pulsating energy -through delay and feedback loops- which imbue into the image a warmth and life - a result that stands apart from the puppeteering and facade of life created by animation.

I am influenced by a continued exploration of our understandings of SPACE and LINE and IMAGE as well as the existence of time within an artwork. The final work should be able to reproduce a moving image of the world in front of it whilst commenting on the deconstruction and reconstruction of the image shown and seen. 

Christian Dimick - 

I intend to make medium scale conceptual drawings on wood panel. Through using a range of direct mediums such as oil stick, charcoal and found object I aim to dictate personal idiosyncrasies of perception and memory. The starting point for these drawings is always walking, which translates into experimental documentitive language and then finds its way into a visual form. I am infl]uenced by other artists/writers who use walking as a means of understanding space, time and connecting narrative with objects such as Susan Solint, Richard Long and Stanley Brouwn.  

What is the concept for the exhibition? What ideas does it explore, what are its reference points?

Our exhibition could be seen as the creation of a materially represented limbo, a between space neither here nor there, in which time and material solidity loses its hold on accepted perceptions of reality. Memories of past and apparitions of future intermingle in a strange fog. The exploration of this space between nothing and something echoes and amplifies the seething atmosphere of this moment of existence, in which we seem to gaze into a chasm, a darkness which could be full or empty, beneath feet run unutterable undercurrents which disrupt and destabilise.

 The work and the intended space cohabitate conceptually in symbiosis. The space is an entrance and exit point, a through- space, a solid, architectural in-between. We intend to explore unconventional lighting and installation , using the limitations of the non- gallery space as an opportunity to break with convention and influence what we create. This space is the mouth to the vast expanse of the great hall, which will be empty and filled with darkness. The acoustics of this space create a dense silence which will be a potent atmospheric facet.

Identify the site for the exhibition and whether secured or aspirational. How does the site relate to the concept for the exhibition?

We are all making primarily wall-based, large scale works. This means we require a spacious exhibition area. We recognise all work as boldly individual, while supporting and enriching one another’s expressions through our various perspectives and interpretations.  

First Choice: Block 10 Great Hall (10B09)

This space ties together our overarching concepts around sensory and individual perception in relation to space/place/time. The group wanted to use a space that pushed our practices out of the standard gallery setting, in our case the space becomes part of each of our works as they respond to its unique qualities such as size, lighting, reverberation and ambience. 

Second Choice: 10A19 This space is also suitable for our group as it is large enough to fit all of our works.

 How will the team work? Are there any organising principles? Are there prescribed roles/duties or are you organising yourselves in a different way? 

We have no defined ‘leader’, instead we are supporting each other in sharing organisation tasks throughout the process. Concurrently we will  work independently on our own projects,  while frequently communicating our progress and artwork developments to one other.

A timeline: what needs to be done and by when?

Once we have secured an exhibition space, we will be able to plan further (layout, lighting, install).

In the meantime we will continue to work independently.

All works will be completed and ready to be installed before exhibition night (Friday 11 September).

The DC TV Report for 5/6

This is The DC TV Report for the week ending Saturday May 6th, 2017, as submitted by Edward O'Hare, nickname To Be Determined.

Gotham: Bruce found himself in a mountain prison, was hypnotized by a mysterious figure, and told he could become a symbol that can protect Gotham. Oswald became fed up with Ivy and called for his henchman Gabe, who ended up double crossing Penguin. After Oswald killed Gabe and his lackeys, Ivy suggested the army of freaks on Indian Hill might be able to help Oswald take on Ed. Jim’s Uncle Frank warned him about a weapon the Court of Owls was shipping in to destroy Gotham. Babs raided the docks for Jim and learned that a crate from Indian Hill had already arrived. Jim learned from Carmine that Frank ordered the hit on Jim’s father. When confronted, Frank urged Jim to join the Court of Owls and killed himself. Last Minute Reveal: Jim got a call from Kathryn, who sent a limo for him to meet with the Court!

  Lucifer: After falling off the grid and worrying everybody, Lucifer showed up with a new wife, Candy, who he married in Vegas. Chloe was torn, refusing to work with Luci but Luci wouldn’t give up. Chloe and Dan were investigating the death of an up-and-coming rock singer. After going undercover with Luci to a divorce mediator, Chloe and the gang figured out the drummer did it. Chloe eventually forgave Luci and made up with him. Amenadiel figured out Luci ran off to protect Chloe from the truth about her conception. Charlotte grappled with Amenadiel about Luci’s motivations. Luci made up with Charlotte and she revealed plans to use the Flaming Sword of Eden to return to Heaven. Last Minute Reveal: Lucifer said goodbye to Candy. Turns out she was just an actress he hired to fool Chloe! 

  Supergirl: Maggie and Kara had a little spat at the dinner table when Maggie pointed out that some criminals may get off because of Supergirl’s indelicate handling. Alex was kidnapped by one of her childhood friends who knew Kara’s secret. The culprit, Rick Malverne, demanded that his father be released from prison. Kara and Maggie worked together and were able to track down Alex and save her from drowning in her cell. Rhea posed as a scientist and asked Lena Luthor to help her build a trans-matter portal. Lena figured out Rhea was an alien and told her to kick rocks and Rhea tried to appeal to Lena with stories of her broken family and saving the world. Last Minute Reveal: Lena made a brunch date with Kara and agreed to start working with Rhea!

  The Flash: Barry and the team tracked down physicist Tracey Brand and rescued her from Killer Frost. Tracey felt overwhelmed when she learned all her theories about the speed force are true, but HR calmed her down and became smitten with her. Julian bugged Cisco for not fighting Cailtin and Cisco admitted he was afraid he might kill Caitlin. Caitlin kidnapped Cecile, who had just told Joe “I love you.” When team Flash went in for the rescue, Caitlin had already learned their plan from Savitar. Cisco finally went full Vibe, knocked Caitlin out, and took a blood sample before Savitar scooped her up and ran off. Joe decided to tell Cecile all about Barry being the Flash, and everyone thought that was a swell idea. Last Minute Reveal: Barry had a lightbulb moment and confronted Savitar, who revealed himself to be a future version of Barry!

  iZombie: Liv country-fried the brain of a dominatrix and had HD visions of all her clients, including sleazy lawyer Brandt Stone and sleazier newsman Johnny Frost. Clive caught the perp trying to blackmail Frost. Liv played dom and got a confession. Don opened the Scratching Post and got high on Utopium with a new friend. Liv told Fillmore Graves about Harley Johns, who interviewed him, bugged his car, and confirmed he is building an army to fight Zombies. Major went on his first mission and was stabbed 35 times saving civilians from terrorists. Then Major got sick and collapsed. Justin brought him to Ravi and Liv, who realized they had to let Major’s wounds heal before they could give him the cure and destroy his memories. Last Minute Reveal: After one last night with Liv, Major was ready for Ravi to give him the cure!

  Arrow: Before the start of this season, Ollie and Felicity had a one night stand, but Felicity told Ollie she wasn’t ready to get back together because of his trust issues. In the present, an EMP blast threw Arrow HQ into lockdown and trapped Oliver and Felicity, who couldn’t walk because her spinal implant was fried. The rest of the team worked to free them from the outside and accepted help from Lyla, even though she and Diggle were still fighting. A methane leak caused Ollie and Felicity to go further underground. Thanks to some ARGUS souped-up T-spheres and a dramatic rope-climbing rescue from Diggle, Ollie and Felicity reached safety. Lyla and Diggle kissed and made up and Felicity told Ollie she understood why he kept secrets from her. Last Minute Reveal: Oliver’s son William got off the school bus and was greeted by Adrian Chase!
