Inktober, Tiffany Aching, Barbie, and a General Life Update

The Plan: Read the Tiffany Aching books during the summer, re-make her, and use her as the main character for my next Inktober.

The Reality: while I was finishing Cupid Cafe my landlord decided to sell the apartment I've been renting for over a decade. It was an extremely shitty one (no heating, broken air-conditioning units, dark, moldy, etc), but it was dirty cheap, and the best I could afford.

It was sold in mid-June, and the new owner (surprising no one) wanted to raise the rent. I don't know how the rental market is wherever you live, but here (in Athens, Greece) it's a right nightmare (Airbnb has a lot to answer for...). I couldn't find anything in the same price bracket that wasn't basically a tiny basement-turned-into-a-studio. I was panicking. Heavily.

In the end a (really good) friend came to my rescue. She convinced her mom (who had moved to her vacation home during the pandemic) to rent me the city apartment she was rarely using anymore. With the same money I was paying for the previous one. A fucking life saver let me tell you.

It's a much bigger, and generally much nicer, one than the previous shithole I was living in. I finally have enough space for an actual studio. It's also in a much nicer neighbourhood. One I normally would not be able to afford. Lots of green spaces, and very pet friendly (I don't have a pet at the moment, but I'm greatly enjoying meeting all the happy puppers on their walks, whenever I'm out and about).

I moved in in mid-July. I'm still working on it, as I've been going through a lot of the things I had in storage, deciding what to keep, donate, or throw away, and that takes time. The studio is still a mess, but here is a sneak peek of my current working space (the walls were supposed to be lilac, but I'm not complaining - Peppa-the-pig pink it is):

Anyway, back to Inktober. As you can imagine I had hardly the time to read anything during the summer, so the Tiffany Aching idea will have to wait. I also felt extremely uninspired by this year's Inktober prompts. I dug around a bit and found a prompt list I actually like. It's the Mystical Witchtober one, hosted by agingerly aianaiya isabee Madie Meri Marigona Suli Aria and Talita on Instagram. Here's the prompt list (by isabee):

As I was going through the things I've had in storage I found some of my childhood Barbie magazines and sticker albums. So I'm thinking of riding the nostalgia wave, and turning my Witchtober into a slightly Barbie-esque, and a bit late 1980's/early 1990's themed, witch-vampire romance.

I will be working on it at a rather leisurely pace, since I'm still busy working on my new space, and also recovering from a recurring freak throat infection I've had since mid-August (was it strep? was it mono? Who knows? Not my doctors). I've been through two rounds of antibiotics and I'm still not completely well, so please be patient with me.

I think that's all for now. Stick around for a very soft and pink Witchtober. And worry not, I have a lot of Wyrd Sisters things planned once this one is over.

Oh yeah, I've also somehow managed in the middle of all the chaos to acquire a new boyfriend. Which hasn't happened in a while. So that's nice.

I made last year's Wyrd Sisters Abroad Inktober into a zine for the Comicdom Con in May. In true ADHD fashion it was written at five a.m. the morning it had to be at the printer's, after the third all nighter in a row. So typos were inevitable. "Moooom!" I heard a whiny voice and footsteps coming down the creeky stairs. "Charlie spilled my potion!" A young boy with ruffled black hair and emerald eyes came running towards me.

Merither, ten years of age, his parents traded him for a neverending-wealth-charm.

He held up a blueish stained shard of glass as his older sister came stomping through the kitchen. "That's what you get for stealing my favourite charm!", she yelled.

Charlotte, 15 years of age, traded for a glory spell.

Her golden hair and green robes were covered in teal stains from which flowers had started to sprout.

I wiped my hands on the apron tied around my waist and extinguished the fire that had been heating a pot of soup I had been preparing with a quick glance. Then I turned to the two now bickering children. "First of all, Merither", I said as I carefully took the shard from his hands and let it disappear, "we talked about running with sharp objects."

"Only when wearing a protection-sigil-sticker", he muttered looking at his feet.

"That's right." I pet his shoulder and turn to the girl next to him. "And you, young lady, have already received your punishment as I see", I continued mentioning to the now fully blossoming forget-me-nots on her dress.

"But mooom! That handsome squire will be out collecting firewood soon and Meri stole my beautifying-charm!" She sounded almost desperate. Ah, young love! Foolish, but who was I to take that away from her?

"Oh, alright! Merither, give Charlotte back what's her's this instant", I said as I bend over a bit to be on his eye-level. He grumbled a bit, but pulled a braided leather wristband with golden stars dangling from it out of his pocket and reluctantly handed it over to his sister.

"There you go!" I straightened my posture and turned to Charlie. "But I'm not helping you with the potion stains. They're your mess." The teen groaned in annoyance, but didn't protest. "Before you go", I began when she was about to storm out (that squire seemed very important to her ... hm, I will have to keep an eye on him), "I want you to know that you don't need that charm. You're already beautiful."

Charlie rolled her eyes, but smiled nonetheless as she shut the wooden door behind herself.

I looked back at Meri. "You've been studying the gardening section of the library, haven't you?", I asked before I added with a wink: "Good job on that growth-potion." The boy gave me a big, toothy smile before thanking me with a theatrical bow and running back upstairs to his room. Althewhile Emily, my youngest, was sitting at the dinner table colouring a simple cloud-summoning sigil and giggling. "Charlie is a flo-wer!", she chanted as another gust orange, yellow and purple mist slowly rose from the piece of paper.

Only 5 years of age and traded simply for some healing potions and medicine. Her mother almost didn't survive the pregnancy. And the poor thing couldn't even afford a visit from the town's doctor. She used to visit Emily from time to time and still loves her greatly, but we both knew, she wouldn't be able to raise a child poverty strikken, in the worst district with noone to help her. It didn't help that she became a mother so young. She was still just a child herself ... I shook my head and turned back to my pot of soup. It was enough to feed at least eleven hungry mouths. With a flick of my wrist the fire started up again and the soup bubbled up lively. I looked outside the open window in front of the stove, past the drying herbs and hung up utensils. Three were playing hide-and-seek, two were calling their familiars (a fox and a tabby cat, they got along well), one was reading under the old oak and my eldest was picking berries for the compote.

I sighed. Each of them were entrusted to me for one reason or another and sure, it wasn't always easy, but I loved them more than I planned on doing in the beginning.

Amina, the oldest of the bunch, handed me a basket filled to the brim with strawberries. "Thank you, my dear." I took the basket and put it on the black marble counter beside me.

"No problem, mom. I'll go to Catrina's now, okay?", she stated and was already running off.

"Alright," I chuckled, "have fun on your date!"

The last thing I heard befire she teleported was an embarassed "Mooooom!".

I met H again. I cannot tell you how much I fall in love with her each time. I was interviewing her. We were in her car and she would consantly cut me off to point out where all she could have made out if she evr had a boyfriend. We couldn't finish our interview because we ran out of time. So while she drove, I asked her the big question "What does Azadi mean to you?"

And of course Heeba unsurfaced a story I would never have seen coming.

"You know one day, I came back from school...I think I was in 11th standard and I told Ammi that I had donated blood in school that day. Without a thought she immediately asked me "Tumne permission kyun nahi li" (you didn’t take permission). Can you imagine that Nidhi? Can you imagine that? I screamed at her saying "Meri khoon hai ye Ammi...meri khoon hai ye. Apni khoon, apni marzi. Yahan mujhe khoon dene ki azadi bhi nahi hai?" (It is my blood Ammi....this blood is mine. My blood, my will! Don’t I even have the azadi to give my own blood here?)

I couldn't stop laughing. "That would make an excellent street slogan - "Azadi, azadi, hum kya chahte hai? Khoon dene ki azadi!". (Azadi, azadi, what do we want? The azadi to give our blood)

Just as we laughed a man with an Azadi sticker passed by us, staring at us and we both burst out laughing. This may seem like a meaningless, frivlous story but it is in these fleeting moments of banal snipets that an unspoken desire for life and love unsurfaces.

I was interviewing M. We were sitting ina cafe, Rihanna was playing in the background and M drank her cold coffee while I ate my paneer shawarma. I was excited at the thought of veg shawarma because I’ve hardly ever seen one. I asked M “Do you feel like you’re an azad woman?” 

“Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I feel like an azad woman when I am not ask for anything. When I have no demands, I’m mast (chill), I’m azad. But the moment I demand something from my own people, from India, from anyone then I am no longer azad”.

Yesterday I was frustrated. The quiet is now getting to me and I’m craving noise and freedom and strange silly things. I was home all day and I decided to get some air. I took a shower, did my laundry and decided to buy a pack of cigerettes and walk down to the bund (river bank). The sun was setting and the river would be beautiful. Despite not wanting to be alone, I thought I would find some solace with the fresh air and some setting sun. 

I got my pack and walked along the bund. A white car kept following me slowly. Some lech of a guy. I was so frustrated. In my head I said “Please not today. Just not today. Leave me fucking alone”. But of course he didn’t. I started walking by the bund, looking for a place to sit. Every single bench was occupied by a man. On one two men sat talking and smoking, on another a man was lying down and smoking, sun bathing. On another one sat an old man, checking his phone. “Where the fuck is a space for a woman here?”, I thought. Finally I found a spot and sat down. The white car came and stopped behind me. I turned around, unable to control myself, I asked him “What do you want” 

“What? Nothing, I’m just waiting for a friend”, he said. 

“Yes, I can see how you are. Please move”, I said. 

“Why should I? Why you so angry girl? Don’t worry, be happy baby”, he said. 

I turned around and dropped my cigerette and watched it burn itself to death. 

“No fucking Azadi. God knows what you men are asking for?”, I thought a mean thought. (Very mean)

About Holi : Holi is a Hindu festival that celebrates the arrival of spring. The festival is celebrated over the course of several days, usually in the second week of March. Holi is one of the most popular Hindu festivals, and it’s celebrated by people both young and old. From lighting the Holika bonfire, to playing colors, to visiting with friends and family, Holi is a wonderful celebration to bring the community together and celebrate the triumph of good over evil.

Holi is based on a legend about King Hiranyakashipu. `Hiranyakashyapu had a son, Prahlad. Prahlad was the greatest devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap wanted to kill his son, so he called his sister, Holika. She had a magic robe. This robe had the power to save the wearer from burning in fire. Hiranyakashyap ordered his sister to sit on a burning fire along with Prahlad. He thought that his sister would not be harmed by the fire because of the magic robe and Prahlad would be burnt to death. But the result was the opposite to what the evil demon king planned.

As is believed, no one can harm the person who has God as his saviour. Thus Prahlad came out of the burning fire safely and Holika was burnt to death.The other day is celebrated with joyful colours to mark the victory of virtue and goodness over evil.

The festival is celebrated for five days. The 5th day, Rang Panchami, marks the closing day of the Holi festival.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year—for music gear news and announcements.

The NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants) 2020 trade show just concluded.

With every serious gear company in attendance, there was so much breaking news that it’s hard to keep track of every single juicy reveal and teaser.

That’s why we’re going through the top 9 most exciting NAMM highlights of 2020.

1. UAD LUNA

I’ll dive right in with one of the biggest and most surprising announcements of NAMM 2020. Universal Audio is building a DAW!—or something very close to it.

UAD LUNA is the groundbreaking new recording environment based on the respected analog-modelling technology in the Apollo series of interfaces.

There aren’t too many details available yet, but LUNA will integrate deeply with the UAD Apollo hardware.

It will also have multi-track tape emulation and Neve-style summing built directly into the mixing environment.

And perhaps the most exciting reveal—virtual instruments! If UAD’s plugin expertise is anything to go on, their instrument plugins should be top notch.

2. Behringer synth reveals and releases

Behringer has been hard at work disrupting the synthesizer market in the last few cycles.

But this year’s showing was particularly mind-blowing. Behringer’s upcoming releases could put some of the most sought after electronic instruments of all time in your home studio.

3. Great things from Korg

Korg has also been busy creating equipment with high expectations from the gear community.

The Korg Wavestate is a welcome update to the well-loved 90s era Wavetstation that promises even more powerful multi-timbral wavetable synthesis.

There are full-sized versions of the MS-20 coming in four different colours, intriguing DIY kits and even an update to the legendary Keytar!

But Korg’s most exciting news might be the no compromises reissue of the ARP 2600.

This beast of a monosynth packs all the enormous sound of the original into more practical package with modern conveniences.

But it’s certainly on the high end of the price range at a sticker shocking €3999.

With the announcement of a Behringer version at roughly the same time it will be interesting to see how Korg’s spot-on recreation that spares no expense will fare against a much cheaper edition.

Just when we thought it was all over Korg teased the Opsix, a brand new 6-operator FM synth that was only displayed behind glass—exciting!

4. Fender/Squier offsets, paranormals and alternate universe

It was a spectacular year for unlikely combos and non-standard configurations over in Fender-land.

CBS era Teles back with a 60s thinline with classic stylings and the smart looking 70s custom featuring an all new take on the Seth Lover Wide Range Humbucker pickup.

80s shredders are also seeing a resurgence with the retro-styled, Floyd Rose equipped Limited HM Strat.

The Parallel Universe line continued its convention defying weirdness with all sorts of unexpected mashups:

Spark-o-matic—Jazzmaster with Firebird vibes

Jazz Strats—odd looking combination of Stratocaster and Jazzmaster

Tele Magico—stylish 3-saddle Tele with Fender gold foil pickups.

Uptown Strat—aFender McCarty?

Troublemaker Teles—80s Les Paul stylings on a Tele

The affordable Player series revived the late 70’s “Lead” models in single coil and humbucker configurations, as well as some beloved short scale offsets like the Mustang and Duo-sonic.

Meanwhile, Squier’s own Paranormal 2020 series leaked, with product pages surfacing for P90 equipped baritone and thinline Cabronitas, offset Teles, dual humbucking Supersonics, Tornados and pastel Cyclone IIs.

If that weren’t enough, Squier Starcasters are on the way at a ridiculously affordable price-point—just $399 USD for the well-appointed Classic Vibe edition.

It was a spectacular year for unlikely combos and non-standard configurations over in Fender-land.

5. Antelope’s enormous converter

Antelope is pushing the channel count envelope again with an unprecedented 64 channels of AD/DA in a single converter unit.

The 2U behemoth Galaxy 64 is also the most powerful configuration of Antelope’s Synergy Core DSP platform yet, boasting 12 ARM chips for real time mix processing.

I can’t imagine too many workflows where all 64 channels would be in use simultaneously, but the technology is seriously impressive.

The Galaxy 64 also confirms another one of the most prevalent trends seen at NAMM this year and in the interface market in general—network capabilities.

Antelope’s flagship sports network connectivity over the Dante standard, something we’ve seen from Focusrite, Avid and others in the past.

6. The Eurorack boom continues

The Eurorack scene shows no signs of slowing down, despite persistent claims of a growing market bubble.

Behringer’s aggressive entry into the market may be shaking things up, but boutique manufacturers are still developing unique and great-sounding modules.

One of the most exciting developments came from the guitar pedal universe.

The Empress Zoia Euroburo edition brings all the power of the Canadian company’s semi-modular digital sandbox to the format.

The Victory V4 Amp is a powered edition of the British boutique builder’s popular Victory preamp.

Bluguitar Amp X is a pedalboard amp designed to create great vintage guitar tones in a small and portable format.

Left field guitar pedals have been another fixture of the NAMMscape for years.

2020 is no different with innovators like Chass Bliss, Pigtronix, Walrus and Beetronics debuting exciting new offerings.



Here are my picks for the most interesting guitar pedals released this year at NAMM:

Chase Bliss and Meris collaborate on the CXM1978, a pedal version of the legendary Lexicon 224 digital reverb

Pigtronix offers its respected Infinity Looper technology in a compact form factor

Walrus debuts a super hi-fi digital delay

Rainger FX made a pedal that somehow creates overdrive by analyzing liquid (???)

Old Blood Noise Endeavours Visitor lets you explore modulation in parallel.

Beetronics releases an aggressive fuzzy overdrive with their signature (and bizarre) insect stylings.

Left field guitar pedals have been another fixture of the NAMMscape for years.

9. The return of the stage piano

The humble stage piano is getting a fresh lease on life with new models from Dexibell, Viscount, Roland, Yamaha and Korg.

The Yamaha YC61 looks especially exciting with its slider-style drawbar registration, sample based instruments and onboard realtime FM synthesis for classic DX tines.

The Viscount Legend 70s offers an interesting take on the format with an intriguing modular concept and retro styling.

Each piano will include a basic module, but expansions can be added later to create the perfect stage piano for your needs.
