Riddle made a point to be punctual in all things, rising and falling on a set schedule—must like the sun and the moon. This set him into a certain rigid rhythm, one that was difficult to remove him from. Running late, falling out of time... It simply wouldn’t do.

It had taken you a careful concoction of pleading, puppy dog eyes, and the planets aligning just right for him to agree to go stargazing.

“Only for a fifteen minutes,” Riddle had insisted as you tugged him along by the wrist, “and not a moment more.”

“Fifteen minutes!” you called back—though Riddle was almost certain it had gone over your head.

The night was rich with deep violets and dark ceruleans, the colors dabbed upon a pane and smeared together with a palette knife. Specks of glittering light dusted the sky, propped up by invisible strings as accessories to the pearly moon. Blinking in and out of existence, some streaking against the night.

“There’s so many shooting stars out today!” you gasped, excitedly clapping your hands together. “Look, Riddle! Isn’t it pretty?”

“Well, yes. I suppose that it is.”

He tilted his head back to get a better look, drinking in every bit of the sky above him. So many clusters of stars twinkled in that vast expanse. And so many more beyond it.

“Hey, you know what? We should take this chance to make wishes!”

“Make... wishes?” Riddle turned to you, his face suddenly arranged in a confused expression. “I beg your pardon?”

“You don’t know about it? It’s said that if you wish upon a shooting star, then your wish will definitely come true.”

“There’s preposterous.” Riddle shook his head vigorously. “That is an urban legend at best. There is no magic contained in shooting stars capable of such a thing. It is more likely for a wish to come true if you dedicate your own efforts into making it a reality.”

You rolled your eyes. “You have to visualize your spells to pull them off, right? I thought you’d have a better imagination, since you’re such a strong magician.”

“I-I am simply stating facts!”

“I know, I’m just teasing~” You laughed softly—then grasped his hand in yours. “Just humor me this once, okay? We’re already being bad by being out waaay past our bedtimes. Let’s live a little more!”

“Must you remind me?” His words eked out through his teeth.

“Yeees.”

Riddle sighed, pulling his hands away—and then closing them back around yours. No longer the one being held, but the one doing the holding.

Your breath stilled as he lifted his eyes to yours. Large, round, and reflecting the myriad of sparkling lights behind you. An honest and noble look, accompanied by faint red cheeks.

“... I must confess, I still do not see the point in this ‘wishing upon a star’ nonsense,” Riddle stated matter-of-factly, “because everything I could ever want is already right here.”
