Hi, I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your Viceroy AU, and if I may ask, what was Wang's reaction when Sabine died? Did he considered to have her buried in Shanghai? She was his sister, after all...
to be honest, no one took Sabine's death well. Sabine's will involved her being cremated, and she requested for some of her ashes to be transported back to Shanghai for her family. The rest are in an urn in the Dupain-Cheng household.
As adults, Sabine's and Tom's families did their best to hold up well, not for themselves, but for Marinette, who was so inconsolable about her mother's death, both sides of the family were concerned she was going to literally die of heartbreak.

so I listened to Matthew 25:21 by The Mountain Goats on my way to work this morning specifically to make myself cry and the next song to come up on shuffle was Cry for Judas, a song with the opening lines ‘some things you do just to see how bad they’ll make you feel’. And I just about died laughing about it.

It's "I wish you were still around to break my fall" on this. He's still finding the song and the final line does hit harder, but yeah.

tmg lyric ask game - the window song? and matthew 25:21?
ask game: send me a mountain goats song & I'll tell you my favorite line from it!
The Window Song: I know you / You're the one / I spent three seasons trying to pretend / That I never knew - Feels like a little bit of a copout to say the chorus but I really like the emotional scene it paints.
Matthew 25:21: I felt all the details carving out space in my head - This entire song is so...it packs such an emotional punch that it was hard for me to pick. But I really like this line, because sometimes you're doing something totally mundane and you know, crystal-clear, that you're going to remember it in perfect detail for years down the line. Those moments are always kind of weird, but usually, at least for me, they're good ones.
thanks for the ask!

For the tmg album asks: The Life of the World To Come?
thank you so, so much for this ask - the life of the world to come was my first mountain goats album and remains the most important to me to this day <3
the best song on the album: matthew 25:21 speaks to grief in a way that is genuinely incomparable in my experience. i think it'd be a crime to suggest any other song off this album for best song.
my favorite song on the album: extremely difficult to answer. genesis 3:23 like. changed my life. i'd heard a few tmg songs before my best friend played me genesis 3:23 but wasn't Into The Goats. and since then i've been like. guy who almost exclusively listens to the mountain goats. it also had an insane impact on my original story. but if we're permitting bonus tracks too, the itunes bonus track, enoch 18:14, is like. one of the best songs in tmg's discography to me and i love it in a place beyond words.
youtube
my least favorite song on the album: my least favorite song on this album is ezekiel 7 and the permanent efficacy of grace, but like. it's still a song with complex layers of meaning and personal emotional connection for me, i very much so love and have cried to this song, the others just all outrank it.
the most overrated song on the album: psalms 40:2. people aren't wrong to love it as much as they do, but it's the song i see recognized the most off of this album and it's far from the best song on the album as a whole! no hate to psalms 40:2, just a wish that the rest of the album got More recognition.
most underrated: 1 samuel 15:23? i don't actually know the definitive lowest rated song on this album, but i also don't think i've ever seen any love for this track. it's not My Favorite of all the songs on this album? it's not top 3 for me? but it is like really important to me. it stands at the threshold to this album and stands by your side as you enter the emotional space the album occupies. it's a guardian of sorts to me, and i treasure it, and it brings me to some crystal clear memories of a beloved friend's home. the only other transitional guardian like it i can name in the discography is going to chino, which i love just as earnestly.
the banger of all bangers: i'd be lying if i didn't say psalms 40:2, straight up. to avoid repeat answers though i'm gonna shout out romans 10:9 which was my alarm clock when i worked at an airport starbucks for the 3:30 am shift and was getting at most 3 hours of sleep at a time but frequently less.
rate from 0-10: ten. i love you the life of the world to come.

10 comments left by reddit user u/austinpostofficebox (a reference to Source Decay, a song by The Mountain Goats on Mu-yeol's favorite album) on posts in r/themountaingoats
1. Any love songs without a sense of impending doom?
u/austinpostofficebox (67 upvotes)
I hate to be pretentious but the most beautiful love song I've ever heard is Standard Bitter Love Song #5, an unreleased TMG song that was only performed once in 1992 [link to the song]
It makes me think of the way I loved my wife when she was still alive. The way I always will, except the song is pure joy, no longing.
2. What are some the most underrated mountain goats song in your opinion?
u/austinpostofficebox (15 upvotes)
OP I see your Old College Try and raise you International Small Arms Traffic Blues off of the same album. It's a pet favorite of mine. I'm from Asia, so geographic and historical references outside of the US in TMG songs always really excite me to hear. Like, "cool, John knows the rest of us exist." I love comparing the Alpha Couple's relationship to the border between Greece and Albania, fraught, yet intertwined and there's nothing that can be done about it.
But yeah, my top 10 list would be, in no particular order, and only sticking with released songs:
Distant Stations
Hostages (controversial, because it is less obscure, but I think it isn't appreciated enough)
Some Swedish Trees
Bell Swamp Connection
Alpha Sun Hat
Korean Bird Paintings
Onions
Stars Fell On Alabama
Alpha Desperation March
The Window Song
3. TMG Tattoos?
u/austinpostofficebox (7 upvotes)
I've always wanted a TMG tattoo. I've considered just getting "Matthew 25:21" because A. it would be funny because people would think it was a Bible reference when I'm not a Christian; and B. because I've been unable to be normal about the lyric "you were a presence full of light upon this earth, and I am a witness to your life and to its worth" since my wife died, which would be the reason I'd want it anyway.
4. Hey, /r/themountaingoats, what's your favorite unreleased song?
u/austinpostofficebox (12 upvotes)
Ethiopians, 100%.
"And I can't think of one thing in this whole wide blessed world that's more dangerous and frightening than you when you get bored" hello??? "Good things never last bad things never die" just kill me
Also You Were Cool, but I'm in my 40s and it shouldn't affect me the way it does, but it does.
5. Songs for when you feel hopeless and you need to sit with that feeling for awhile?
u/austinpostofficebox (24 upvotes)
Mobile for when you're begging God to kill you. Autoclave for when you' know you aren't worth loving. Steal Smoked Fish or TG&Y for "life sucks but I'm going to keep wasting oxygen." Balance for an impending sense of doom and not being able to fix it.
6. I want to get into TMG, where should I start?
u/austinpostofficebox (24 upvotes)
I started my partner with All Hail West Texas because it is personally my favorite album. I think he liked it! He doesn't listen to music much. And nobody else has listened to TMG because I told them to, so I don't have a large sample size, but AHWT is a good intro.
If you like the lo-fi vibe, work backwards. If you didn't love it, go to Tallahassee and work forwards.
7. What was everyone's first introduction to tmg?
u/austinpostofficebox (60 upvotes)
In 2002 I was living in Seoul, South Korea. My late wife and I were from Daegu, a city further south. Our apartment building had several American English teachers living in it and I had recently gotten brave enough to befriend them to practice my English. My wife and I were at our friend Henry's apartment when at some point he put on his cassette of Nine Black Poppies. Something about the frantic guitar strumming in Cubs In Five caught my attention and I liked that the songs were wordy but you could clearly hear what he was saying-- I thought listening to the band more would be a fun challenge to improve my English.
22 years later and they're my favorite band.
My brother suggested my partner, who is technologically challenged, buy tickets for me to see them in Bristol earlier this year and I got to take my son. I don't think he likes TMG that much but he knows them because of me, so he had a good time.
8. Any words or phrases you first learned from a TMG song?
u/austinpostofficebox (20 upvotes)
English is my third language and in 2002 I learned the idiom "waiting for the other shoe to drop" from Alphonse Mambo off of Coroner's Gambit
9. Are there any songs where the Jordan Lake Version is better than the original, in your opinion?
u/austinpostofficebox (40 upvotes)
Better: See America Right
Not better, but I can only sing it this way now: Foreign Object -- I like the lyric and melody changes that he did in this version
10. What's y'all's favorite half baked TMG lyrics?
u/austinpostofficebox (32 upvotes)
ONE? There's so many. Though half-baked? I feel like cooked rare more like it. John Darnielle is an excellent communicator.
Woke up afraid of my own shadow, like, genuinely afraid -- the delivery? gut-punch
I hide down in my corner because I like my corner -- bitch, me too
I was sitting in the street. I don't believe I've made it clear what exactly I mean by that. I was sitting in the middle of the street. --been there, mate, been there
Selling acid was a bad idea selling it to a cop was a worse one -- I'd say
Martin calls to say he’s sending old electrical equipment That’s good, we can always use some more electrical equipment! -- can we though?

How Many Are Your Works, O LORD!
Introduction
1 O Lord my God, you are very great. You are clothed with splendor and majesty.
Day One—Light
2 He wears light like a robe.
Day Two—the Sky
He stretches out the heavens like a canopy.
3 He lays beams on the waters to support his upper chambers. He makes clouds his chariot. He travels on the wings of the wind. 4 He makes his messengers winds. His ministers are blazing fire.
Day Three—the Waters and Plants
5 He placed the earth firmly on its foundations. It cannot be moved forever and ever. 6 You covered it with the deep as a garment. The waters stood above the mountains. 7 At your rebuke they fled. At the sound of your thunder they hurried away. 8 The waters surged up the mountains. They went down into the valleys, to the place that you prepared for them. 9 You set a boundary that they cannot cross. They will not return to cover the earth. 10 He makes springs flow into streams    that run between the mountains. 11 They give water to every wild animal. The wild donkeys quench their thirst. 12 The birds of the sky live by the streams. From among the branches they send out their song. 13 He waters the mountains from his upper chambers. The earth is filled with the fruit he produces. 14 He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants that people use[c] to produce food from the earth. 15 Also wine that makes people’s hearts glad, olive oil to make their face shine, and bread that sustains their lives. 16 The trees of the Lord have everything they need. He planted the cedars of Lebanon, 17 where birds make their nests. The stork has its home in the fir trees. 18 The high mountains are for the wild goats. The crags are a refuge for the rock badgers.
Day Four—the Lights
19 The moon marks off the months and seasons. The sun knows when to go down. 20 You bring darkness, and it becomes night. During it all the animals in the forest move about. 21 The young lions roar for their prey. They are seeking their food from God. 22 The sun rises, and they gather together. They return to their dens and lie down. 23 Man goes out to his work. He continues his labor until evening.
Days Five and Six—Animals and Man
24 How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you made them all. The earth is full of your creatures. 25 Here is the sea, great and very wide. In it creatures swarm beyond number— living things, the small with the large. 26 There the ships go back and forth, and the leviathan that you formed to play in it. 27 All of them wait hopefully for you to give them their food in its time. 28 You give it to them. They gather it up. You open your hand. They are satisfied with good things. 29 You hide your face. They are terrified. You take away their breath. They breathe their last and return to their dust. 30 You send your Spirit—they are created. You renew the face of the earth.
Closing Benediction and Prayer
31 May the glory of the Lord endure forever. May the Lord rejoice in his works. 32 He looks at the earth and it trembles. He touches the mountains and they smoke. 33 I will sing to the Lord throughout my life. I will make music to my God as long as I last. 34 May my meditation be pleasing to him. I will rejoice in the Lord. 35 May sinners come to an end on the earth, and the wicked—may they be no more. Bless the Lord, O my soul.
