what are your top 3 songs right now, and what characters would you pair with them ?
ooo interesting i love connecting music to characters and thinking way too much about it. the top 3 songs i’ve been listening to recently are:
1. skin by allison ponthier
2. don’t forget me by maggie rogers
3. natural affair by the growlers
i don’t actually have characters i already associate with these but i assume you mean CR characters if you’re here.
i would say fearne for skin because it’s a really cute song but also very creepy and about wanting to wear the skin of someone you like, which is her vibe!! i could definitely see someone writing this song about fearne too. but! it also really reminds me of how i view the vexleth dynamic, especially in early c1 (from keyleth’s pov).
i associate so much of maggie rogers’ music with imogen but i would say don’t forget me is more of a keyleth song, especially post-campaign 1. she has gone through so much and pretty much everyone has moved on but her! she needs “a good lover or just someone who’s nice to [her].”
natural affair is not my usual kind of music but i’ve been listening to it non-stop this week. i think i’d actually assign this one to caduceus, funnily enough. it reminds me of his wisdom around the wildmother and how nature is not just peaceful but often very violent. the whole song feels like cad giving the rest of the mighty nein his typical very-odd-but-usually-good advice. also the “you’re a hardened soul and not a piece of clay” line fit too well. that being said “if the world is round, how come it’s upside down?” is perfect for FCG.
thank you for asking, anon, this was fun!

tagged by the lovely @mountainsidepossum (thank you thank you)!
rules: make a new post and tag some people you want to know better or catch up with!
last song: well I’ve been listening to music whilst typing this post which I guess is kind of cheating, so I’ll just go with Natural Affair by The Growlers because that’s been living rent-free in my head recently
last film: hoo boy do I not remember things! I want to say it was Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Movie because I literally don’t think I’ve watched any since christmas?
currently watching: I’ve been watching Great Pretender on netflix recently, and while I’m usually not super into anime, I just love the Heist Movie tm vibes it has and every time there's a big “Ocean’s 11 pulling back the curtain on the heist plan toward the end of the movie and everything is revealed woah” moment I absolutely lose my mind lol
currently reading: I haven’t read a book in the past few weeks but the last thing I read was The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives in Your Home (me? reading nightvale content even though I dont listen to the podcast anymore? more likely than you think), which was very good and also gave me an existential crisis (reminding me why I don’t listen to nightvale anymore lol)
currently listening to (podcast-wise): listen,,,, I simply listen to too many podcasts to not break the rules and add my own category. I’ve been loving Not Another D&D Podcast lately (even though I’ve been listening to it for the uhhh last 3 years almost by the time next month rolls around? time flies huh); the new season has been fabulous, naturally, and the “oops one of the hosts is on paternity leave let’s cut to another part of the world for a side story with a guest star” is extremely my shit because it’s just so interesting to see the world outside of the Main Characters tm because it adds a whole new layer of context to the story and plot and makes the world feel a lot more real (also new characters to think about a lot but never draw? yes please).
currently craving: hmm honestly? I’d say winter break 2: the sequel. would love to not have homework right now lol (I say, doing this instead of my homework).
tags (obviously if you don’t want to don’t bother lol just though this was kinda fun): @king-of-the-rain-and-wolves, @dmitriwilliams, & @alienasterisk

Album Review: Natural Affair
Tumblr media
The Growlers have done it again: created a unique album still true to their signature sound on Natural Affair, released October 25th.
Pulp of Youth entered my life at a moment I’d consider most uncanny.
It was just past five in the morning, and I was on an express train back to London from Reading. My dress, all too short, was riding uncomfortably up my thigh, my once perfect eyeliner was melting off my face, and the only thing on my mind was the slowly lightening sky.
I turned up the music and rested my head against the window, a bittersweet smile spreading across my face as the chorus hit.
“Glasses raised again/ Drink to the pulp of youth/ ‘Til our time is due/ I’ll be on the vine with you/ As it was in the pulp of youth.”
Needless to say, it resonated with me, a theme song for a hectic night that hadn’t really gone wrong, but hadn’t gone quite right, either. This, I thought to myself, is youth.
Their music isn’t hard to relate to. Lead singer Brooks Neilsen often addresses the listener directly, taking for example Try Hard Fool’s, “Nobody said it would be easy/ But if it was, you wouldn’t want it, anyways/ It’s just a game, though, you ain’t no child/ You gotta cry every once in a while”.
The band-- made up of the aforementioned Brooks Neilsen, lead guitarist Matt Taylor, and keyboarder-guitarist Kyle Straka-- prioritise coming of age, and the power of raw, unfiltered love in an unexpectedly old fashioned way. Neilsen sings of regrets and nights turned sour, he introspects, and shares over the course of each album what he’s learned as he grows older.
Their recently released sixth studio album, Natural Affair, is no exception.
As with their previous albums and EPs, Natural Affair helps you form a certain kinship with the the Growlers. Neilsen’s voice is unmistakable-- an extremely valuable asset, resulting in a band whose music you’re sure to recognise within seconds.
Their growth is clear as day from the moment the beat drops on the first track, Natural Affair. It’s respectable, especially considering how well they’ve managed to stick to their signature narrative.
The band solidified a grungy, lo-fi sound through their first few albums, well represented by their 2013 EP Not. Psych!’s Tell It How It Is. But for the first time since the their formation in 2006, Neilsen’s naturally gruff voice is unfiltered, providing a sharp yet addicting contrast to its crisp instrumentals.
It’s very experimental, something that’s been a long time coming since their 2014 release, Chinese Fountain-- their first album produced in a proper studio with what Brooks himself calls “nice equipment”. You see confidence in Natural Affair, with 80’s inspired tracks like Social Man, Stupid Things, and Foghorn Town that, without Neilsen’s voice, could be mistaken for something off Songs From The Big Chair. In other words: they really went to town on the funky percussion, and it worked.
That being said, it still features a few bass-heavy rock songs expected from the band. Long Hot Night (Halfway to Certain), and my personal favourite, Die and Live Forever, are timeless, filling you with that full-bodied catharsis rock fans crave.
In fact, the whole album makes you want to dance, whether it be a full-bodied groove to Social Man, or a lazy headbob to Shadow Woman.
Natural Affair is now available for streaming on Apple Music, Spotify and YouTube.
