Thinking this morning about the time I got to witness the universe spank a pedantic asshole that I was about to slap myself.

I was at a folk concert given by the local symphony orchestra with my family, and the guy sitting a row behind us was being just… insufferable. Aside from the fact that he was bloviating excessively about every song on the program, the tone of his voice was just MADDENINGLY smarmy and superior. I was ready to turn around and shove the program in his mouth the whole first half of the concert.

Then we get to Ashokan Farewell, which is a song I really, really like. This fucking moron starts going “Ah yes, it’s an old Civil War folk tune, written by an artist from the South, I believe-“

And if you know anything about the song you’ll know that’s entirely wrong. It’s a rumor that got started because Ken Burns used it as the intro for his Civil War documentary series. The damn thing was written in 1982 by Jay Ungar and his wife Molly Mason, and it originated as a goodbye/goodnight piece at a mountain valley in Upstate New York where they used to hold fiddle and dance camps. One of his companions cautiously ventured this and was summarily dismissed with something like “Oh, well that’s not what *I* heard.”

It took a HERCULEAN effort not to turn around and Well Actually this guy. I strongly feel that if you’re gonna be smart about something, you should be cheery and excitable about it, as if you’re sharing a bag of snacks. The point is to share the knowledge you love, not to try and puff yourself up like a blowfish.

But I was beginning to observe how much smoother my life went if I hid my strangeness at that point, and a lot of that was shutting the hell up. So I just held my tongue, ground my teeth and sat there.

And I was rewarded for it; the conductor must have heard my psychic scream, because he introduced the song by pointing out the Civil War Folk Song rumor and then dismissing it and providing the real info.

Folks.

Mr. Grand High Cultured Muckity Muck. Went DEAD SILENT. I heard not another word from his mouth for the rest of the night. It was magnificent and I immediately had the NEW problem of not giggling and kicking my feet.

Sometimes, if you stay quiet and keep out of the way, an asshole will own THEMSELVES, and it’s glorious to witness.

There was a discussion somewhere in Historytube (I forget where exactly) about how fudging history in presentations to the public because the truth "would confuse people" is the worst fucking excuse ever. I agree, obviously, but like... I guess I've been thinking a lot about where the line is when it comes to confusing/overwhelming/potentially misleading people. Especially if what you're doing isn't explicitly in an educational setting. This has come up a lot with the Napoleon movie and yeah... just because "it's art" doesn't automagically absolve you of all responsibility when you decide to play with historical imagery and historical events. I also think about how Ken Burns' decision to include exactly one non-contemporary musical piece (the Ashokan Farewell) in his Civil War documentary had ramifications he could not have possibly foreseen. That song became the song from the soundtrack, a cultural touchstone for the decade... and everyone was convinced it was a Civil War tune.

Anyway, this is all coming up because I'm developing ideas that deliberately fuck with historical signifiers to elucidate connections across eras but I'm actually kind of worried that people might take it all at face value even if I post explanatory notes about what I'm doing and why. And like, I think I'm probably safe doing this when there's a century or three separating the eras I'm mashing up but things get significantly more iffy when it's a matter of decades. And I realize, it's the internet: most people probably aren't going to read the notes. I may just not want to try this with stuff that has more recent origins, because of the potential for distorting people's impressions. Sighhhh.

When the tearing down of Confederate participation trophies was at its height people tried to concern troll about other civil war cultural things, & a bunch of people tried to ask if next they'd ban stuff like "Ashokan Farewell" (the song from Ken Burns' The Civil War)

which, obviously no, since people were objecting to Confederate apologia not the Civil War as a whole

but also that song was very much composed as the theme to a fiddle camp in 1982. It's younger than Raiders of the Lost Ark and these people were out here defending it to show off their deep commitment to Civil War history

10. Are you always going to be a little in love with somebody? 

I would certainly hope so.  I guess this depends on what the question means; is there somebody who was or is in my life who I will always be a little in love with?  Yes, yes to both, previous and present.  I’m a little in love with a few people, because I fall in love very quickly, because I desperately WANT to be in love with someone.  Keyword here being “with,” it takes two to tango, I don’t want to be in love AT someone, I want it to be mutual, and it so seldom is.

17. Did you have imaginary friends? Do you still have them?

When I was a little kid I had an imaginary friend named John, who was just a kid my own age, almost like a brother to me.  I played with him more than any real people, and my evangelical mom got really upset and thought he was a demon, because of course he was.  In reality, he was I guess my first OC, because I was always coming up with stories about him, adventures I wanted him to go on, a cast of characters for him to interact with.  My three main ones were John, the level headed leader, Micheal (specifically spelled EA, not AE), his tough older brother who nobody messed with, and Junior, their genius younger brother who always had solutions to all their problems.  I don’t still write stories about John, but nowadays I spend most of my free time going through imaginary plots in my head, acting them out under my breath whenever I’m alone, playing out whole movies and TV shows that don’t exist and probably never will, with dozens of characters in different scenarios.

46. Is true world peace ever possible?

No.  Not in my lifetime, not so long as capitalism and right-wing extremism flourishes around the world.  There will ALWAYS be prejudiced people trying to cause fights and hurt others for personal benefit.  Evil people are very good at amassing power, and that’s not gonna stop being true no matter how many good people fight hard to wrestle it away from them.  There will be peaceful times, but they will never last long, I don’t think.

I listen to whatever gets my brain chemicals a-flowin.  My most recent playlist contains a cover of Same Old Lang Syne by Jonathan Coulton, an orchestral version of Country Roads, a bunch of original Jonathan Coulton songs, some space shanties (like sea shanties, but sci-fi themed), My Way by Frank SInatra, a cover of We’re Not Gonna Take It by the Veronicas, Through the Valley by Shawn James, a ton of Weird Al songs, Northwest Passage by Stan Rogers and other sea shanties, some Walk Off the Earth songs, Abba’s Mamma Mia, Danny Boy by Celtic Woman (this one makes me cry), Sweet Virginia by the Rolling Stones (as heard in the Knives Out soundtrack), and The Ashokan Farewell violin song from Ken Burns’ Civil War documentary, to name a few.

To mark America's Memorial Day observance, MFF looks back at that country's most tragic conflict: the War Between The States. Alright, here are two whatever-the-fuck-I-want-to-tell-yous(one a fun fact, one a personal anecdote).

Ashokan Farewell

         This piece is one of my favorites because I think it exemplifies music that evokes very clear emotions and images. “Ashokan Farewell” was written in 1982 and used as the soundtrack for the 1990 documentary, “Civil War.” While I think this piece was very appropriate for that documentary in several ways, it can also be enjoyed in a broader sense than just as it applies to the period of the Civil War. From the beginning, the piece immediately recalls vivid images. Perhaps there is a man playing the fiddle to himself on his back porch, watching the sun sink down after a long day of work, or a father playing to his children as they drift off to sleep. There are a thousand scenes that can come to mind while listening to this song. I always find that, as I listen, my mind slips into imagining a large field on a nice summer night. On the horizon the sun is setting, and I can from a distance away a long, dirt path that runs along a tall field of corn. There are some trees here and there, and some houses down the road, but for the most part, there is nothing but space. I’m completely alone, and I have a deep, satisfying feeling of calm and freedom. 

This is the power of music to its listeners. It can bring out thoughts, emotions, smells, sights and sensations through nothing but its sound. While these sensations may be experienced differently from person to person, there is something about this piece that gives us a universal understanding that it is somehow in reference to a specific period in history, whether we knew it was used in a documentary about the Civil War or not. Perhaps the most powerful hint to this effect is that it is written using the Pentatonic Scale. Without the half steps incorporated into it, the melody is very simple and easy to listen to, and similar to the sound of old American folk songs. Thus, the piece in itself brings to mind the simple life-style of the people of the time period. I find this effect very calming and pleasing. 

Aside from the scale, the instrumentation is very suggestive of the same. It begins with just a single violin, an instrument that was often played as a hobby, such as in Laura Ingalls’ depiction of her Pa’s fiddle playing in the “Little House on the Prairie” series. At approximately one minute into the posted recording, the fiddle is joined by a guitar, whose arpeggiating and strumming adds to the relaxed, folksy feeling, while also picking up the pace and making it more rhythmic. At two minutes, the guitar takes over the main theme. At three minutes, the violin once again plays the theme and is joined by a second violin. It is now not just one instrument playing solo, but several instruments making music together. It brings to mind a friendly group of people coming together to make music, a very common form of socializing and entertainment for the people of that time. I’ve always found this piece very beautiful and visual, but I never stopped until now to wonder why. I have discovered that, when music makes me feel a certain way, there are almost always technical, concrete reasons for it.

2. historical re-enactors AU (Fili/Kili, unrelated, T, CW: American Civil War references and reenactment)

“Why did you have to pick the only career that needed a whole car to carry all of its supplies?” Kili grouses as he drops his load down next to their tent.

“Careful!” Ori says from behind Kili. He is carrying his own load of equipment.

Fili briefly looks up from his camera, “That shit’s explosive, Kee,” he says absently before turning his full attention back to his camera.

Kili narrows his eyes. “Is he serious?” He directs his question to Ori.

Ori nods. “The chemicals used to fix the photos are explosive. When he was working on that series of battlefields in the South we often referred to the car as a rolling bomb.”

Kili’s eyes go wide. “And you just drove around like that?”

“Not really any other way to do it,” Fili says with a shrug. “You need to develop the wet plates immediately and you need chemicals to do that. The guys who actually photographed the war — Gardner, O’Sullivan, and the like — took all this stuff with them in wagons on roads that were much worse than ours even if you didn’t take into account that there was a war going on.”

“I’ll be back tomorrow,” Ori says by way of farewell.

“What? You don’t fancy sleeping in a tent?” Kili teases.

“Indoor plumbing is nothing to be laughed at,” Ori says primly. “Besides, even if they had that here I’m not about to sleep here.”

Fili shakes his head. “Ghosts,” he says by way of explanation once Ori has left.

Kili looks to Ori’s retreating form. “Really?”

Fili leaves his camera to set up one of the camp chairs to sit on. He nods. “We were down in Georgia photographing sites from Sherman’s March to the Sea*. We camped most of the time. It was cheaper, but it was also a way to really feel the places, which I think helped inform the shots we took. 

“One field we camped in was a site where many men died. I’m not a ‘believer’ but Ori swears that he heard marching, gunshots, and screaming throughout the night. He said it kept waking him up. In my opinion some of the best photos from that trip came from that site. Ori says that spectral traces, what was left behind, somehow can be felt in the photographs.”

Kili flops down on the ground next to Fili. “You’ll have to show me those sometime.”

“There in my studio.”

“Do you think that there’ll be ‘ghosts’ here?”

Fili laughs. “If there were ghosts anywhere it would be here. The battle here at Antietam was the worst. More people died at Gettysburg, but that battle lasted 4 days. Antietam was the site of the bloodiest day of the whole war.”

They lapse into silence. The camp is filled with the sounds of mallets hitting tent stakes, someone nearby is playing Ashokan Farewell* on the violin, cicada songs come to sudden stops when the cannon is test-fired for the next day.

“Any shots you’re going to try and get tomorrow?”

Fili leans back and shrugs. “These things can be chaotic. I have a couple ideas of what I want, but I’ll also just have to see what happens.

“I do know one picture that I want.”

“Hm?”

“Do you remember that book I showed you? The one with pictures of couples*?”

“Yeah.” Kili elongates the word and grins.

Fili smiles back.

today’s practice consisted of an hour of busking where I was asked to play “the song from The Last of the Mohicans” which I deduced was Ashokan Farewell from the Civil War Series. Then he said “That’s a nice violin, isn’t it? It sounds just like on TV!”

“Desperate Men and Fools” follows!

1. What inspired you to write the fic this way?

I talked about that a bit in the announcement post on DW/LJ, but I’ll add that @gardnerhill‘s talents are wildly different from my own: my initial attempts to mimic Mayor Strade’s storytelling style were… well. Let’s just say I can’t do what she does, and leave it at that.

3. What’s your favorite line of narration?

Lock pushed up the lantern’s chimney and lit a cigarette from the flame. For a few moments his face was clearly lit, his eyes slitted narrow against the light. Then he set the lantern aside and turned the wick down, extinguishing it. All I could see was the glow of his cigarette’s coal, and the stars beyond him.

Doc’s heart is breaking right there, and damn him if he’ll say it. When I wrote it, I didn’t explicitly put together that Doc was fixing in his mind what was like to be his last image of Lock, but that’s what he’s doing: looking while he can still look, and then the light goes out and there’s just a hole in the stars where Lock ought to be.

And that, he thinks, is the last he’ll ever see of him.

I shut my eyes, against him and the stars both, and hoped he’d have the civility to ride out before I woke.

4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue?

“I have never met a man with a gift for being silent as loudly as you, Doc.”

Which is, of course, playing with the famous line from “The Twisted Lip”:

“You have a grand gift of silence, Watson,” said he. “It makes you quite invaluable as a companion.”

5. What part was hardest to write?

omfg, the scene just after Doc and Lock recover their horses, when they’re supposedly talking out what happened with Dumont. Those two laconic bastards never talk, not like they mean it, so trying to get their issues out on the page for the reader… UGH. I thought I was gonna have to beat them both over the head with a tree limb to get either of them to say the thing.

6. What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?

It’s a capital-W Western, which is a genre which I normally give wide berth. I talked about that a little bit in the DW/LJ announcement post.

8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?

Louis Riel and the Red River Uprising, of course, which is the backstory for Strange Empire. The surveyor getting killed was an invention of the show, but everything else in “Desperate Men and Fools” about the Uprising is reasonably accurate, at least in broad strokes. Further, most of the details about the Metis and the Red River Colony are historical, at least as I best understood them. Other random bits are factual, too, like the lynchings during the New York City draft riots, and the mayhem of the Nevada silver boom.

That said, there are details I fudged. I don’t have any concrete evidence for putting that particular card game in Red River, the one with the stripped down deck and extra jokers (although there were French card games that used that deck, and there was a ton of French influence in Red River). Also, there was a point where I got fed up with trying to sort out the on-again/off-again steamboat situation on the Red River. Also, anyone who makes a strict accounting of the dates might discover July-through-September has a few more weeks than those three months usually have. (I blame the steamboats that were probably not running that year.)

9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?

The first draft had a different ending, jumping ahead to Bakerstown in 1885, the year of the Northwest Uprising / Second Riel Rebellion.

The original ending, starting just after finding Dumont’s bounty poster:

“Reckon there’s enough good left in the world to stop what’s coming to Red River?” I asked him later. It seemed that over the past year maybe Lock and I had become the same kind of fool Dumont was. Ever since she let us walk away that day, I’d been noticing the little bits of good still left in the world, and the people trying to grow them. Lock and I weren’t farmers, but sometimes we stepped in and tried to stop someone else from killing a thing. Sometimes we succeeded, but most times we couldn’t offer much more than vengeance.

Lock shook his head slow, turning the question over. “I reckon there never was enough good in the world to stop that.”

And maybe Lock was right – or maybe all the good in the world was looking the other way – but the army did finally come to Red River, and the surveyors got their stakes and string into the place proper after all. By the time they were done, a lot of those Métis lost their farms. I heard later a bunch of them settled up along the Batoche River, up in Saskatchewan. Maybe they thought that was far enough west to be safe from Ottawa’s surveyors, but then in 1885 it all happened again, this time with a lot more shooting. Some hangings, too, there at the end.

By then, Lock and I had washed up in a little Texas cow-town, where Lock was wearing a tin star, and I was taking the time to patch people up after I finished shooting ‘em. We still weren’t farmers, but Lock figured that he and that mayor there might make a place where other people could grow some good things if they cared to. I didn’t see much point in it, but didn’t mind letting him try.

“Think Dumont and her auntie got caught up in it?” I asked Lock, when I heard what had happened up in Batoche. I didn’t want to mention that baby, although it had to have been full-grown fighting age by then. I hoped its mother had taught it to shoot as well as she did.

“No telling,” Lock said. I knew he still had Dumont’s bounty poster, hid somewheres people couldn’t see it and get bright ideas about easy money. Whether he kept it hid for her sake or theirs, I couldn’t say, but I knew he still had it. Lock shook his head, looking like the world pained him sore, and I couldn’t say I disagreed. “Ain’t no telling at all.”

However, Saskatchewan isn’t Doc’s story to tell, and everyone who read that draft agreed. So that all went away, and I eventually settled on the ending it has now.

13. What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn’t listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?

For the scene in Red River, I recommend Metis fiddling.

For the Doc and Lock scenes, “Arms of My Love” was usually running around my brain, but Jay Ungar is much closer to Lock’s sound, especially some of that haunting fiddle-work. (Fiddler’s Elbow, Ashokan Farewell, Blue River Waltz, Prairie Waltz, Lover’s Waltz) I expect Southern Soldier Boy might make an appearance if Lock is in a particularly sentimental mood. 

However, while “Red River Valley” is (probably) period and topical, it is not on the playlist. From Wikipedia:

Edith Fowke offers anecdotal evidence that the song was known in at least five Canadian provinces before 1896. This finding led to speculation that the song was composed at the time of the 1870 Wolseley Expedition to Manitoba’s northern Red River Valley. It expresses the sorrow of a local woman (possibly a Métis) as her soldier lover prepares to return to the east.

Just… no.

15. What did you learn from writing this fic?

The Red River flows north. I checked that three times, then looked at some terrain maps, before deciding it was probably true.

Because of @bowiecadmium‘s generosity and diligence, I also learned: Horses are asses. Horses don’t travel faster than humans over long distances; they just carry more. Horses see better than humans in the dark. A dappled gray would have been super-distinctive in that decade and place, and thus shit for any kind of undercover work. Museum photos of Metis saddles typically show them stripped of all their hardware, which is not how they would have looked in actual use. Breaking trail on horseback is exactly as much of a pain-in-the-ass as breaking trail on foot. When camping with horses, you can hear the horses doing horse-things; if you like horses, you might even have warm feelings about that. One can turn a horse without using the reins, but one wouldn’t call that ‘kneeing’ a horse. Doc’s lack of emotional attachment to Betsy is likely an artifact of his war service, during which he probably had a disturbing number of horses die under him, and/or had to eat his.

And a horse fact that I picked up on my own after @bowiecadmium’s beta pass, so I might have fucked it up: roan horses sometimes have corn marks.
