When Legolas comes to valinor he hates the forests there.
Tbf, it’s not bc the forests are bad, it’s the opposite in fact. It’s too good. There are no issues or scars. It’s to perfect, uncanny valley vibes, and not the ones he is used to.
See Greenwood has always been a bit of a murder forest, even before sauron’s bs, that’s just the cherry on top. Greenwood has always been the home to things that shouldn’t be but are.
He would like his hell forest back please.

The Princes and the Princess of Mirkwood
Ok, so, I ignored the will of the people and did what I wanted when it came to Thranduil's kids. In my head there are 4 total, all of which are cool and awesome and magnificent, and so freaking adored by the people.
(from left to right)
Hadriel (4,278 years old) is the only daughter of King Thranduil and the head of the royal guard. She is a kind but fierce warrior, considered the best, second only to her father.
Aendir (4,893 years old) is the eldest son of Thranduil and the Crown Prince of Mirkwood. Where Thranduil is hard and stubborn, Aendir is soft and open. He is a truly worthy prince.
Caelreth (3,906 years old) was the youngest son and, as third in line for the throne, has devoted himself to his books instead of weapons. He is often underestimated for his love of knowledge, but there are few better at uncovering information left in Middle-earth.
Legolas (35 years old) was a happy accident, born just a few years after the Battle of the Last Alliance. He is the youngest and the last elf to be born in Middle-earth. Elves are not usually born in times of turmoil, but in the brief years when the Elves believed themselves free of Sauron, he was brought into this world. A final blessing, as Mirkwood sees it.
Of course, Thranduil loves them with all his heart, so deeply that it brings tears to his eyes when he thinks of them.

Father and Son

I finished the artwork of Thranduil, and there was a surprise I didn’t tell you about - Legolas!
Honestly, I’m blown away by how this piece turned out. I absolutely love the two figures, as well as the lighting and background - it’s probably the most finished and intricate artwork I’ve ever done!
(Yes it is still an animation frame)

For the fashion designers: Green-elves (the guys who lived in Ossiriand during the first age) years of the trees? (Pre-Noldor influence).
Tumblr media
I don´t think the fashion of elvers changed as much as humans but I think especially the Nandor and Silvan´s (green elvers) kept their fashion stable - as you can see in my Legolas and Galion, who are both green elvers of the third age. - most noticeable difference with years of the tree and third age fashion for them is that less cleavage is shown less and there´s usually a decorate cape on third age fashion. - neither do I think they have a gendered fashion like some other groups, they pretty much wear what they want.
Their jewelry is usually made out of tree or hunting trophies but sometimes, if very fancy, bronze - mostly because it´s a soft metal and easier to work with than other kinds of metal.
For armor they use leather and reed vests - don't underestimate a well made reed vests they are warm and might just work better than plate armor at times - both because it´s what their resources permit but also because it´s good armor without slowing them down the way metal would.
Depicted: a wooden necklace tied with ribbons, a bronze earing, a charm with a clip to hold things (goes on the belt)

Ngl, obsessed with the idea that the questers know that legolas is, if not thousands of years, then centuries old, but it not regestering until he mentions having met their ancestor or a historical figure to them. It doesn’t help that legolas looks like a teenager.
Just like that scene with eowyn realizing aragorn is a legit grandpa but with legolas and the rest of the walkers instead.
Legolas: i never had the pleasure of having a conversation with the man, but from the brief glimpses of (insert boromir’s ancestor from 1000 years ago here) that i saw, he was an honorable man.
Boromir, bluescreening: yes, he was known as quite the chivalrous man. But for you to have met him you must be at least a thousand years old!
Legolas: *clicks tongue and doesn’t say anything with an amused smile*
Aragorn, who has gone through all these emotions already: older.
Gimli: Older?? Are you telling me that this beardless, pointy elf with a face of a teenager is, what? 2000?
Aragorn: more.
Gimli: MORE???
Merry: if he is close to 3000 years than he was probably born around the last war for the ring!
Legolas, enjoying this all immensely: i was old enough to fight in it actually.
Pippin: alright, so legolas is 3000 and a few centuries. That’s a lot older than i thought to be honest. He looked like the youngest elf in rivendale.
Legolas: i’m 4000, actually.
Gimli: GODDAMN IT! I knew we shouldn’t trust these babyfaced point ears! You can’t even tell their age!
Legolas: if it makes you feel better, other elves also have a hard time discerning the age of silvans. They’ve routinely thought of mine to be millenia younger that we actually are.
Boromir, having an existential crisis: what the fuck

Mirkwood Elves
Tumblr media
POV: you’ve stumbled into the Elvenking’s feast for the third time (because you were starving) and they’re fed up with you
I’m super super happy with how this drawing turned out!! Started out as a just-for-fun sketch of some guards for my wip fan fiction, Misfit, but I really liked the sketch so I just threw on some base colors to spice things up and then … I just kept going and ended up with this! The first project I’ve actually completed, start to finish, in months, and I am so proud of myself.
These two aren’t canon characters or ocs (yet?) but sometimes it’s just nice to draw a character without the pressure of getting their looks exactly right. It’s fun to go in without a plan and see where the road takes you.
Sketch:

Edited: Welp, it seems I am wrong!
The Silmarillion, "Index of Names.": It is said about the Eldar: "According to Elvish legend the name Eldar 'People of the Stars' was given to all the Elves by the Vala Oromë. It came however to be used to refer only to the Elves of the Three Kindreds (Vanyar, Noldor, and Teleri) who set out on the great westward march from Cuiviénen (whether or not they remained in Middle-earth), and to exclude the Avari."
So both the Sindarin and Silvan Elves are indeed considered part of the Eldar.
And here I was thinking I was really smart...nope, just overconfident. But it's all good. I needed a slice of humble pie.
-
I was researching Tolkien's elves and something popped out at me that I hadn't noticed before.
In the Hobbit, when Tauriel and Kili are swapping stories about stars, I never caught this lore inaccuracy until now. (Ignoring the fact that Tauriel said it. We aren't here to talk about her [non] existence specifically.)
Tauriel says in her little star speech that "all light is sacred to the Eldar, but Wood-Elves love best the light of the stars".
It is true that at their birth in Arda, the Elves found by the Maia Oromë were named "Eldar" as a whole, but that name became reserved for only the elves who completed the journey westward across the sea to Aman, the Blessed Realm. Eldar became synonymous with High-Elves, those who lived under the light of the Two Trees. This name now only applies to the Vanyar, Noldor, and Falmari (Teleri who crossed the sea).
So why is Tauriel, a Silvan Elf (a Wood-Elf branch of the Nandor), calling herself - and her kin by extension - of the Eldar? The Nandor Elves stopped their journey on the eastern side of the Misty Mountain, refusing to cross over because they were afraid of the looming shadow the mountain range cast over the land. Mind you, the only light they had in Middle-earth at the time was starlight because the Sun had not risen in the sky yet.
And to that point, technically not even Elvenking Thranduil can call himself an Elda because he was of the Sindar, born under the rule of Elu Thingol in Doriath. He and his father Oropher never travelled West across the Great Sea. Thranduil never saw the light of the Two Trees, which is the requirement for being an Eldar.
Lore inaccuracy! Gotta love it!
But to her credit, Tauriel was right that the Silvan Elves (Wood-Elves) much prefer the light of the stars because when the Sun rose for the first time, it was like a terrifying ball of fire in the sky with absolutely no warning. The Dark Elves of Middle-earth were forced to become Light Elves after centuries of only starlight. Talk about a rude awakening! ☀️

that thing that bilbo says about mirkwood elves being more dangerous and less wise fucks so hard,
and I have seen people getting offended by the less wise part, and I get it because it's not very nice, but the way I have always interpreted is
more dangerous (hot) and less wise - less wise in the way the elves of rivendell and lothlorien are wise - calm and enigmatic in the way they speak and move, probably more energetic in their younger years but much more subdued at the, you know, end of the time of elves, so they are more peaceful, more wise in the gandalf-like way like "noo don't kill that creature frodo. who cares if it's evil, what if it has some purpose beyond being evil?" and I feel like the mirkwood elves are less wise in the way they go "fuck that noise, that creature is getting killed twice. shoot first, ask questions later. shoot it again, make sure it's dead." (unhinged, also hot)

So i know we all like to hc that legolas knew at least aragorn before the quest, or the elves of imlardis.
But honestly, au in which legolas is genuinely just some random elf that showed up to deliver a message, was roped into the council and saw the most amazing oppurtunity to fuck with everyone and took the elf spot in the party?
Like, no-one knows who tf he is, he’s just a messenger (no one knows he’s thranduil’s son) and elrond gave him a seat at the council out of indulgence. And then this one motherfucker no one knows ends up joining one of, if not the most, important quest in ME.
Legolas, knowing damn well no one’s got a clue who tf he is: hold on, i sense an opportunity to do the funniest shit ever.
And after he volunteered himself, it’s not like elrond can just go: no, wait a minute.
Legolas has got the audacity. He’s sensing all the imlardis elves’ daggers in their eyes and is full on cackling in his head.
They are having a horrible time and legolas is thriving!
The walkers themselves don’t know untill after the quest.
