Swoony Sapphic Romance Recs
Ever find f/f lukewarm? (It’s not you, it’s an industrial complex.) My intention here is to collect canonical sapphic rep that avoids the flat “girl meets girl” trope, where two women with doubtful chemistry are made to get together simply because they exist in the same narrative. I want media that will make me feverishly ship characters and spend at least 24 hours reeling from the brainrot in the aftermath. I don’t want to like a pairing just because they’re sapphic rep, I want it to be good and unforgettable. These lists are a wild jumble of genres, loosely organised (mostly novels, but I clarify when they aren’t) and are in no particular order! I left out author names to avoid clutter. This is a living post and I will keep updating—please reblog or comment with your own recs if you wish!
⭐️: classics among sapphic media and/or criminally underrated essentials
Top tier best wlw romances: fluttery, swoony and angsty
iqn four, very loose categories
CONTEMPORARY
How You Get the Girl
One Last Stop ⭐️
Kiss Her Once for Me
Iris Kelly Doesn’t Date
Love & Other Disasters
The Fiancée Farce
XO, Kitty (show)
HISTORICAL
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo ⭐️
Last Night at the Telegraph Club ⭐️
Annie on My Mind ⭐️
Don’t Want You Like a Best Friend
Gwen and Art Are Not in Love
SCI-FI/FANTASY
Arcane (animated show) ⭐️
The Midnight Lie ⭐️
A Dark and Drowning Tide
Warrior Nun (show)
Lucy Undying
Youngblood (faced backlash for problematic content—check reviews before reading/supporting. Included here because sapphic romance itself is undeniably excellent.)
GRAPHIC NOVELS
Tamen de Gushi ⭐️
The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All ⭐️
The Princess and the Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Sunset Phoenix (webcomic)
Solid romance but less angsty:
She Drives Me Crazy
Magan & Danai (webcomic)
Bloom Into You* (ani/manga)
Forget Me Not
I Kissed Shara Wheeler
Run Away With Me, Girl (manga)
These Witches Don’t Burn
If You’ll Have Me (graphic novel)
Bonus: SFF with excellent sapphic characters (not romance focused)
Gideon the Ninth ⭐️ (this is its own genre and absolutely gutting despite not being heavy handed on the romance, very emotional and will make you want to put a butch in a pillow fort)
Shera and the Princesses of Power* (animated show) ⭐️
A Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Pirates* (graphic novel)
On a Sunbeam (graphic novel)
Bonus: Literary fiction (little focus on romance but packs a gut-wrenching punch)
Blue Sisters
Our Dreams at Dusk ⭐️ (manga)
Even Though We’re Adults (manga)
Wandering Son ⭐️ (ani/manga)
The Impossible Love Life of Amanda Dean
*sort of girl meets girl but worth plowing through for various reasons, usually their importance to sapphic media or LGBTQ+ discourse in the plot (might get taken off the list with time as I add better options!)

maybe i'll do them in the order of the results for funsies
synopses below the cut:
i am legend
Robert Neville is the last living man on Earth...but he is not alone. Every other man, woman, and child on Earth has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville's blood. By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for dawn. How long can one man survive in a world of vampires?
the black phone
Jack Finney is thirteen, alone, and in desperate trouble. For two years now, someone has been stalking the boys of Galesberg, stealing them away, never to be seen again. And now, Finney finds himself in danger of joining them: locked in a psychopath's basement, a place stained with the blood of half a dozen murdered children. With him in his subterranean cell is an antique phone, long since disconnected . . . but it rings at night anyway, with calls from the killer's previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn't happen to Finney.
the seven husbands of evelyn hugo
In this entrancing novel "that speaks to the Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor in us all" (Kirkus Reviews), a legendary film actress reflects on her relentless rise to the top and the risks she took, the loves she lost, and the long-held secrets the public could never imagine. Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now? Monique is not exactly on top of the world. Her husband has left her, and her professional life is going nowhere. Regardless of why Evelyn has selected her to write her biography, Monique is determined to use this opportunity to jumpstart her career. Summoned to Evelyn's luxurious apartment, Monique listens in fascination as the actress tells her story. From making her way to Los Angeles in the 1950s to her decision to leave show business in the '80s, and, of course, the seven husbands along the way, Evelyn unspools a tale of ruthless ambition, unexpected friendship, and a great forbidden love. Monique begins to feel a very real connection to the legendary star, but as Evelyn's story near its conclusion, it becomes clear that her life intersects with Monique's own in tragic and irreversible ways.
and then i woke up
In a world reeling from an unusual plague, monsters lurk in the streets while terrified survivors arm themselves and roam the countryside in packs. Or perhaps something very different is happening. When a disease affects how reality is perceived, it’s hard to be certain of anything… Spence is one of the “cured” living at the Ironside rehabilitation facility. Haunted by guilt, he refuses to face the changed world until a new inmate challenges him to help her find her old crew. But if he can’t tell the truth from the lies, how will he know if he has earned the redemption he dreams of? How will he know he hasn’t just made things worse?
exit west
In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet--sensual, fiercely independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair, and are soon cloistered in a premature intimacy by the unrest roiling their city. When it explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors--doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice. Leaving their homeland and their old lives behind, they find a door and step through. . . . Exit West follows these remarkable characters as they emerge into an alien and uncertain future, struggling to hold on to each other, to their past, to the very sense of who they are. Profoundly intimate and powerfully inventive, it tells an unforgettable story of love, loyalty, and courage that is both completely of our time and for all time.
a certain hunger
Food critic Dorothy Daniels loves what she does. Discerning, meticulous, and very, very smart, Dorothy's clear mastery of the culinary arts make it likely that she could, on any given night, whip up a more inspired dish than any one of the chefs she writes about. Dorothy loves sex as much as she loves food, and while she has struggled to find a long-term partner that can keep up with her, she makes the best of her single life, frequently traveling from Manhattan to Italy for a taste of both. But there is something within Dorothy that's different from everyone else, and having suppressed it long enough, she starts to embrace what makes Dorothy uniquely, terrifyingly herself. Recounting her life from a seemingly idyllic farm-to-table childhood, the heights of her career, to the moment she plunges an ice pick into a man's neck on Fire Island, Dorothy Daniels show us what happens when a woman finally embraces her superiority.
just for the summer
Justin has a curse, and thanks to a Reddit thread, it's now all over the internet. Every woman he dates goes on to find their soul mate the second they break up. When a woman slides into his DMs with the same problem, they come up with a plan: They'll date each other and break up. Their curses will cancel each other’s out, and they’ll both go on to find the love of their lives. It’s a bonkers idea… and it just might work. Emma hadn't planned that her next assignment as a traveling nurse would be in Minnesota, but she and her best friend agree that dating Justin is too good of an opportunity to pass up, especially when they get to rent an adorable cottage on a private island on Lake Minnetonka. It's supposed to be a quick fling, just for the summer. But when Emma's toxic mother shows up and Justin has to assume guardianship of his three siblings, they're suddenly navigating a lot more than they expected–including catching real feelings for each other. What if this time Fate has actually brought the perfect pair together?
you like it darker
“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to read. King writes to feel “the exhilaration of leaving ordinary day-to-day life behind,” and in You Like It Darker, readers will feel that exhilaration too, again and again. “Two Talented Bastids” explores the long-hidden secret of how the eponymous gentlemen got their skills. In “Danny Coughlin’s Bad Dream,” a brief and unprecedented psychic flash upends dozens of lives, Danny’s most catastrophically. In “Rattlesnakes,” a sequel to Cujo, a grieving widower travels to Florida for respite and instead receives an unexpected inheritance—with major strings attached. In “The Dreamers,” a taciturn Vietnam vet answers a job ad and learns that there are some corners of the universe best left unexplored. “The Answer Man” asks if prescience is good luck or bad and reminds us that a life marked by unbearable tragedy can still be meaningful.
a death in door county
Morgan Carter, owner of the Odds and Ends bookstore in Door County, Wisconsin, has a hobby. When she’s not tending the store, she’s hunting cryptids—creatures whose existence is rumored, but never proven to be real. It’s a hobby that cost her parents their lives, but one she’ll never give up on. So when a number of bodies turn up on the shores of Lake Michigan with injuries that look like bites from a giant unknown animal, police chief Jon Flanders turns to Morgan for help. A skeptic at heart, Morgan can’t turn down the opportunity to find proof of an entity whose existence she can’t definitively rule out. She and her beloved rescue dog, Newt, journey to the Death's Door strait to hunt for a homicidal monster in the lake—but if they’re not careful, they just might be its next victims.
disturbance
As the sun sets on a feverishly hot July evening, a young woman spies on her teenage neighbor, transfixed by what looks like an occult ritual intended to banish an ex-boyfriend. Alone in a new town and desperate to expel the claustrophobic memories of her own ex that have followed, the narrator decides to try to hex herself free from her past. She falls in with the neighbor and her witchy friend, exploring nascent supernatural powers as the boundaries of reality shift in and out of focus. But when the creaks and hums of her apartment escalate into something more violent, she realizes that she may have brought her boyfriend’s presence—whether psychological or paranormal—back to haunt her.
the bell jar
Esther Greenwood is brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under—maybe for the last time. In her acclaimed and enduring masterwork, Sylvia Plath brilliantly draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that her insanity becomes palpably real, even rational—as accessible an experience as going to the movies. A deep penetration into the darkest and most harrowing corners of the human psyche, The Bell Jar is an extraordinary accomplishment and a haunting American classic.
city on fire
New York City, 1976. Meet Regan and William Hamilton-Sweeney, estranged heirs to one of the city's great fortunes; Keith and Mercer, the men who, for better or worse, love them; Charlie and Samantha, two suburban teenagers seduced by downtown's punk scene; an obsessive magazine reporter, Richard, and his idealistic neighbor, Jenny, - and the detective trying to figure out what any of them have to do with a shooting in Central Park on New Year's Eve. The mystery, as it reverberates through families, friendships, and the corridors of power, will open up even the loneliest-seeming corners of the crowded city. And when the blackout of July 13, 1977, plunges this world into darkness, each of these lives with be changed forever.

bsfs older brother sukuna asks!
Tumblr media
OUCH like you're literally crazy thank you so much. random side tangent that no one asked about but basically my mom has a masters in english literature and likes to read/write a lot (which is where i think i get that from) but basically we were talking about books that are meant to me read as books or other writing that is more like cinematic? if that makes sense.
like some people on here write fic that's really prose based and beautifully written. like truly I think the talent lies in how they choose to string the words together that always leaves me in awe. another irl author that does this a lot is celeste ng (ronnie book rec! everything I never told you is one of my favorite books ever)
but then some books are very very plot driven and kind of have plot as the main thing that kind of draws me in. I definitely think i'm this type of writer more where I know that my talent isn't necessarily in how I string the words together (not that I think it's bad, I just think that the way I build something up and make a plot out of something is kind of where I have the most fun and think I do the best in terms of the stuff I put out) an irl book that does this is the seven husbands of evelyn hugo - where it's very jam packed and driven by the actual events of the book as opposed to the actual wording and sentence structure of how they're written.
anyway this ask just validated what I was thinkiNG LOL bc I do think I tend to write some thats more like sucker punch yolo as opposed to really working on writing that's more prose like (and I admire people who can do that because I literallly fumble with normal words, like @/theragethatisdesire and @/neptuneblue are SOOO skilled at this that it always leaves me speechless. anyways.)
thank you again pookie 💌
Tumblr media
literally that's emotional whiplash. I reread the entire thing myself (which is crazy, because I rarely reread my own works after writing them, but I do find myself reaching to read this one sometimes) and LORD like i actually kind of forgot the stuff in the beginning so PROPS TO YOU and it's so sweet that you felt all the feels that were going on that makes my heart so so warm.
heavy on the poor weird child me. mind you that both of these characters internal monologue/and somewhat of their backstory is based on me in real life and heavy on loving little weird child you and knowing that they're still in you somewhere fighting in whatever way they can (for me its fanfic....which is very on brand when I think about it)
Tumblr media
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!! 💌 idk where that all came from in three days but it did and im actually very very proud of it so it makes me so so happy that you enjoyed it!
anyways! idk I hope to write some more soon but someone in my family is having a five wedding events week business going on so i'm like out of capacity all weekend (and already overstimulated from so much interaction)

Hi your vibes are so damn cool, here are my question(s) :)
Honest thoughts on arcane s2?
Best colour combination
Any book recs? (please)
And how's life been?
:DD awesome okay! I’m so sorry in advance you don’t have to read all this.
Honest thoughts on s2 - Uhhhh. After the dust settled I’m a lot less mad at it, I was pretty pissed about Jinx at first. I think it does have some problems, namely some storylines that deserved a little more time (cough cough MEL) + I didn’t really like the introduction of Warwick I thought it was a waste of time esp in such short, packed episodes. All that being said it’s probably one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, and s2 had so many incredible scenes. And it’s gorgeous like every single frame is something to be admired so. I have mixed feelings but overall I think it was a really good season.
Best Color Combination - My ass could not tell you. I really like the combination of dark red with teal or with forest green but also those are my favorite colors so i’m extremely biased
Book Recs - Ohhh absolutely. Number one book rec for anyone, best book I’ve ever read, is Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. It’s a beautiful story and really interesting, every time I pick it up I get lost t in it. It’s about this famous actress getting interviewed, and she’s talking about her life and what her seven husbands were like (spoiler she ends up being bi and the book also talks about her love story with a woman!). I will say the beginning is a bit of a drag cause it focuses on the reporter interviewing her first but it pretty quickly goes into Evelyn’s story, so. Please read it and then come talk to me about it I’m dying over here.
Another reallyy good one is Last Night at The Telegraph Club, it follows this Chinese-American woman in 1954 who is figuring out she’s a lesbian in a world where it’s illegal to be so. The book is wonderfully written and beautiful. The ending is…uhh a little ambiguous it isn’t entirely a happy ending but the book is still so worth it to read.
Third one and then i’ll stop yapping (for now) but Monday’s Not Coming is a reallyyy fascinating one. I don’t remember if that needs any content warnings? Tread carefully I guess. It’s about this girl looking for her best friend and she’s so confused that nobody will help her, and that nobody even seems that concerned that she’s gone. It’s a mystery so I can’t tell you anything more but I adored it.
Life has been pretty fine, thanks for asking! I am…not a big January fan the cold weather tends to get to me. But we’re chilling I always have The Characters to distract me

I love you, I think. (WinRina)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
pairings: Kim Minjeong x Yoo Jimin.
word count: 1,2 k
genre: angst.
summary: Karina's beautiful mess with her own and Winter's feelings.
warnings: none, just bad language, Winter as Celia, Karina as Evelyn, self homophobia. [no review]
a/n: I just wrote it, and well, I'm going to sleep crying... inspired by "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo", this is no hater of Karina's current relationship, just for entertainment purposes.
The beginning is always strange, bittersweet, we could never know that we would end up kissing in a damn laundry room, we could never know that we had fallen in love at that stupid moment, maybe she was wanting that? or maybe it was my stupid drunken heart that got us into this storm.
I remember that after composing myself and thinking about what I had done, I ran after her to explain myself, afraid that she would tell the press that I was a deviant, that would end my life, but she, she...
“I'm not…” I said as she closed the door behind us. “I just… I had a friend in high school, my best friend. And we both…”
“I don’t want to hear that story.” Jimin spoke, I felt my body shudder.
“Okay” he said. “It’s just… I don’t… There’s nothing wrong with me.”
“I know there’s nothing wrong with you.”
I looked at her, trying to understand exactly what she wanted with me, what she wanted me to confess.
“But I know one thing” she continued. “I know I was in love with Hyunjin.”
“I know it well!” She said defensively. “I know you’re in love with Hyunjin. I always knew that.”
“I said I was in love with Hyunjin. But I don’t think that’s been true for a long time.”
"Right."
“Now all I can think about is you.” She said so, and went upstairs to pack her bags.
Maybe, just maybe she was really waiting for me, or she really wanted to tell me…
She hid in my apartment for a week and a half, living in purgatory. We slept together, but without doing anything, we just fell asleep side by side in my bed.
During the day, she would read in my apartment, while I went out to record variety shows.
We didn't kiss. Sometimes we would touch each other, arm to arm, hand to hand, but without ever looking into each other's eyes. In the middle of the night, however, before falling asleep, I would curl up behind her and she would lean against me, feeling the warmth of my belly against her, my chin in the crook of her neck.
I should have believed that we were just a passing whim, but the look at her, that look...
She found me still wearing a robe, drying my hair in front of the sink. Jimin came to me, looking deep into my eyes and said: “I think I love you.” She undid the knot on my robe that was closed.
Well, that night, Jimin and I slept naked, holding each other. We no longer pretended that our touches happened by accident. The next morning, I could hear her, breathing deeply, all proud.
Within those four walls, there was no reason to be ashamed.
I should have known from the beginning, but, all of her actions, her “I love yous”, there is also that letter when she was traveling.
“My dearest Minjeong,
Please never forget that the sun rises and sets with her smile. At least for me. You are the only thing in this world that deserves devotion.
With all my love, Jimin.”
This was before the information spread, before dispatch shared the images and the news. Leaving everyone out about our meetings, no one cared about us anymore.
I was anxiously waiting for a message from her, saying it was a misunderstanding, but no. I woke up to the companies responding and saying they were getting to know each other after the show.
So when she arrived at our dorm, we started a fight after she confessed what happened.
“You are distorting the facts.”
“You’re a coward, and I can’t believe I couldn’t see that sooner.”
“I did all this for you!” She screamed.
At that point, I had one hand on the door handle and the other on the trunk handle.
“You didn’t do a damn thing for me” I replied, my face burning. “She did it for herself. And because she can't bear the idea of not being the most famous woman in the world. You did everything to keep your precious fans, who watch your comebacks just to see you, and to be able to get a three-second peek at your boobs. It was for them you did it.”
“It was because of you, Minjeong. What do you think your family will say if the truth comes out?”
I screamed when she said that, and turned the doorknob.
“You can be sure you’ll lose everything if people find out what you are.” She said.
“What we are” I replied, turning to her. “Don’t think you’re different from me.”
“Yes, I am” she replied. “And you know I did.”
“What the hell.”
“I can fall in love with a man, Minjeong. I can get married if I want, have children and be happy. And we both know that, in your case, the story is different.”
I stared at her, narrowing my eyes and pursing my lips. “Do you think you’re better than me? And that? So I’m the one who’s sick, and you’re just messing with me?”
She held me, maybe she reasoned what she had just said. But I just pulled my arm back.
“Don’t ever touch me again.”
“I care about you, Minjeong. More than with myself. I don't know if your career would get back on track — or your life — if Ididn't do something. So I did the only thing I could. And it worked.”
“It didn’t work, Karina. You're dating."
“I’ll figure it out.”
I looked at the floor and laughed at her. “Apparently, you know how to find a way around any situation, right?”
"Yes. Yes I know."
“But when it comes to showing a little humanity, you don't even know where to start.”
"You can not be serious."
“You are a slut, Karina. Let men use you in exchange for fame. And that’s why I’m leaving you.”
Leaving without looking at her, walking to the elevator to go to the garage, she came after me and stood there, paralyzed, next to the car.
I threw the suitcase on the passenger seat. Then I opened the driver's door and turned to her, standing.
“I loved you so much that I thought you were everything to me.” She said, in tears. “I thought people were in the world to find each other, and that the purpose of my life was to find you. And being able to touch your skin, smell your hair, feel your breath, hear your thoughts. But I don’t believe that anymore.” I wiped my eyes. “Because if the right person for me is someone like you, I prefer solitude.”
Her cruel and ignorant words hit my heart, shattering it even more than it already was. My face remained impassive, paralyzed.
“I think we’re actually not good for each other.” He said, getting into the car.
“I don’t think so.” That was all she said.
“Goodbye, Karina.” She said at the last minute. Then she put the car in motion and I navigated the city aimlessly.
Three days passed, then five years passed without talking to Jimin, she didn't call me. She didn't write to me. I knew what she was doing only because of what she said in the newspapers and the gossip that circulated around the city.
Maybe this is the tragic story of how I stopped loving Yoo Jimin, or not.

Well loved books.
I am in firm belief that books should be well loved. they should be written in, the spine should be cracked, the pages should be folded, things you find during the adventures you take squished between the pages. The more damage done to a book, the more memories and love are in it and there's something so beautiful about a well loved book. it tells a story. it's like a scrapbook of that time in your life whilst you've read it and when you pick it up again after a while of finishing it you can look back at the life you lived while the book traveled with you.
I've started packing my things to put into storage while i'm away at college and I picked up my very well loved copy of Red, White And Royal blue that I read last summer and was flipping through it. it had water damage from me accidently dropping it in my pool and writing in it and different keepsakes from things I did that summer. it has things that I wrote that i never spoke to another living soul, thoughts of love, insecurity that the ink on the pages written by the author reminded me of.
"I don't think I ever thought I would have proper true friends until gr. 12 and now with september almost here and half of my friends going to college it's definitely gone. I hope to feel this truly happy again soon" is messly written on page 201 in pink glitter pen. I wrote that at 18 about the loss of my huge friend group leaving while I stayed and went back to school for another year, needing a missing credit to get into college. I was already feeling like I failed having to go back for another year and losing my friends and reading about Henry, Alex, Nora, and June partying and Alex having that moment of realization of found family made me realise that I most likely won't have that comfort again. Looking back at it now being on the cusp of 20, that friend group was the farthest from friendship, I had just romaticided it. We had moments where it was friendship, in its purest form but overall it turned into something toxic and by the end most of us hated each other and we split into two groups, but the girl who left the scribbled note in the pool water damaged book didn't know that yet. She didn't know what came from that friend group. The friendships that truly blossomed from it, the trips and adventures she'd have with the few friends that made it out of that friend group. She got so, so much closer to her favorite people. She has never been happier then she has now starting the new chapter of her life in a big city, and having the best friends she could ever ask for.
The seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, the well loved book i've brought on my most recent adventures. Lies sand in the crevices of a few pages where I had been reading it on the beach with my friends this summer, the ones that made it out of my Red, White and royal blue adventures.
damaged books are well loved books,
well loved books keep memories,
and well loved books are scrapbooks.

Besties,
What are you currently reading?
This month, I am trying to get through two #gifted copies I received from JBP.
THE LIST 📑 by Yomi Adegoke
Ola Olajide, a celebrated journalist at Womxxxn magazine, is set to marry the love of her life in one month's time. Young, beautiful, and successful—she and her fiancé Michael are considered the “couple goals” of their social network and seem to have it all.
AGE OF VICE 🐍 by Deepti Kapoor
Deftly shifting through time and perspective in contemporary India, Age of Vice is an epic, action-packed story propelled by the seductive wealth, startling corruption, and bloodthirsty violence of the Wadia family -- loved by some, loathed by others, feared by all.
I am throupling these two books with a bookstagram favourite I suggested to the TBR Book Club fam---The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid.
THE SEVEN HUSBANDS OF EVELYN HUGO 👗 by Taylor Jenkins Reid Aging and reclusive Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?
After getting through the amazing world of Daisy Jones and the Six, I just had to get into Jenkins Reid for real. I have only read the prologue and I am obsessed already, even more so after finding out that they are adapting it for the screen.
Have you read any of these? Are they on your radar? x, Nkesh

I’m not including it here cause I don’t want to accidentally forget a trigger and then lead someone astray* enjoy!
- the “my brilliant friend” series by Elena Ferrante (aka the Neapolitan novels) literally the greatest series ever written and I will die on that hill. I would recommend these to everyone if I could
- my sister’s keeper by Jodi picoult (another absolute favorite until I die, I’m currently in the process of re-reading it for like the 4th time lmao)
- The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

- Chronicle of a death foretold by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
- the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
- Between shades of gray by ruta Sepetys

- Monkey Bridge by Lan Cao (wish I could erase this from my memory and read it again for the first time)
- The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brein
- living dead girl by Elizabeth Scott (LOTS of triggers for this one pls be careful)
- A spark of light by Jodi picoult
- the dew breaker by Edwidge Danticat
- lord of the flies by William Golding (I know we all had to read this for school but still so good)

What Makes The Inheritance Games So Engaging?
Before we dive into similar books, let’s take a moment to understand what makes The Inheritance Games so addictive. The story follows Avery Grambs, a teenager who unexpectedly inherits a massive fortune from a reclusive billionaire, Tobias Hawthorne. To claim her inheritance, Avery must solve a series of puzzles, all while navigating a web of family secrets, deceit, and high-society drama. The blend of mystery, puzzle-solving, and suspense creates a narrative that’s impossible to put down.
Books that follow a similar structure — filled with suspense, intricate puzzles, and complex character dynamics — will likely appeal to fans of The Inheritance Games.
1. One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus
One of Us Is Lying is a young adult thriller that combines suspense, mystery, and a twisty plot with a group of high school students. When a classmate is found dead after a detention session, everyone is a suspect. The story is filled with multiple perspectives, secrets, and lies, much like The Inheritance Games. It also delves into deep character development and complex relationships, making it a perfect read for fans of puzzles and hidden motives.
2. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
While not a mystery in the traditional sense, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo contains enough twists and turns to satisfy readers who love drama and intrigue. The novel follows the glamorous life of actress Evelyn Hugo, as told through a journalist, Monique Grant. Secrets, scandals, and puzzles about Evelyn’s seven husbands unravel throughout the narrative, keeping readers on their toes and hungry for more.
3. The Guest List by Lucy Foley
In The Guest List, a lavish wedding on a remote island turns deadly. The guests have secrets, and the atmosphere is thick with suspense as the story moves between multiple perspectives. Like The Inheritance Games, this novel keeps readers guessing, revealing one shocking twist after another as it explores the darkest corners of human nature.
4. A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson
This young adult mystery novel centers around Pip Fitz-Amobi, a high school student investigating a closed murder case in her town. With the help of her friends, she uncovers dark secrets and hidden truths about a crime that happened years ago. Much like The Inheritance Games, this book is fast-paced, clever, and full of twists that will keep you turning the pages.
5. The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley
If you love the mysterious, atmospheric setting of The Inheritance Games, The Paris Apartment will be an excellent choice. The story unfolds in a Paris apartment building, where a woman named Jess is searching for her missing brother. As she investigates the building's tenants, dark secrets are uncovered, and suspense mounts. It’s a page-turner filled with unexpected twists.
6. Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty
Though Big Little Lies is more of a domestic thriller than a classic mystery, its sharp character development, high-society intrigue, and buried secrets will appeal to fans of The Inheritance Games. This novel explores the lives of three women whose seemingly perfect lives are overshadowed by a murder. Like Avery, the protagonists find themselves caught in a tangled web of lies, deceit, and hidden truths.
7. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
In We Were Liars, the protagonist, Cadence, tries to piece together the mysterious events that occurred during her family’s summer vacation on a private island. The novel’s haunting writing, family dynamics, and slow reveal of secrets make it an excellent read for fans of twisty mysteries like The Inheritance Games. It’s a dark, psychological thriller that will leave you questioning everything until the very end.

I have a bunch of books saved in my google play books wishlist and I just finished Midnight in Chernobyl by Adam Higginbotham. Absolutely fantastic but I need a new one. I just did nonfiction so it’s time for fiction.
Legends and Lattes: A Novel of High Fantasy and Low Stakes by Travis Baldree
“Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv, the orc barbarian, cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen.

However, her dreams of a fresh start filling mugs instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners, and a different kind of resolve.”
My thoughts: I’m not that into romance and full fantasy but I wanted to give it a try.
The Long Walk by Stephen King
Against the wishes of his mother, sixteen-year-old Ray Garraty is about to compete in the annual grueling match of stamina and wits known as the Long Walk. One hundred boys must keep a steady pace of four miles per hour without ever stopping...with the winner being awarded “The Prize”—anything he wants for the rest of his life. But, as part of this national tournament that sweeps through a dystopian America year after year, there are some harsh rules that Garraty and ninety-nine others must adhere to in order to beat out the rest. There is no finish line—the winner is the last man standing. Contestants cannot receive any outside aid whatsoever. Slow down under the speed limit and you’re given a warning. Three warnings and you’re out of the game—permanently...
My thoughts: I don’t normally read Stephen King bc he books are so slow but this looked really interesting.
About The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
I’m not even going to type this out. You probably know the book.
My thoughts: I thought this book was about her murdering her husbands and after reading the description, I’m disappointed but am still holding out hope that it is a murder thriller. I’m probably going to be disappointed.

I feel like I finished five books this week???? I think that is accurate?????
I read The Bell Jar which OOF. I mean, it's The Bell Jar. What do I need to say. Only picked it up because it's so hyped, tried to read it years ago and hated it, but liked it more this time (especially the first half. The second half is not good to get through but I got through it).
Read Dogs of Summer which was very gross and at times disturbing, but I liked it. I loved the visceral descriptions of how much the narrator struggled with her feelings for Isora. Either I hated the ending or it went over my head. The setting was described so well. My favorite chapter was when they were walking each other home, laughing their heads off and walking in weird patterns because "it makes you less tired." "Come on, I always walk you."
Listened to The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, which was just amazing. The audiobook is fantastic, but I'm sure the experience of actually reading it is great. I can't wait for the inevitable movie. I loved that I know enough Hollywood history to know who characters are inspired by/loosely based on. Loved the characters, and that no one was perfect. Everyone felt very real.
Read Play It As It Lays, which was arguably the worst choice for my first Joan Didion. I really did not like it at all. Everyone sucked, the story was sort of weird to follow and felt very disjointed. BUT I read the start of Slouching Towards Bethlehem and I'm liking it so far! Growing up around and in LA gives me a weird fondness toward the city... a familiarity that places frequented in childhood gives. Very very excited to read more.
OH! And My Last Innocent Year. I listened to this one because the cover is SO pretty. I really liked it. The writing is great, and I love how she handled complex issues with such nuance, and how she wrote the affair with no romance. This and Evelyn Hugo were probably my favorites of the week.
I've since started Wuthering Heights (on Kindle, as my book is packed away) which I've never read, and also Winter in Sokcho (in print), which I saw recommended on youtube or instagram or somewhere by Lauren Louise. I love Winter in Sokcho so much already that I was only a couple chapters in when I ordered Elisa Shua Dusapin's other book, The Pachinko Parlor. Her writing is SO atmospheric and pleasant, almost like an impressionist painting of a book.

[read] Evelyn Hardcastle ~P34
Um. I know I haven't finished Good Omens yet. I was distracted by a lots of romance books which I try to be discreet reading about because. Yea. Let's just say I know a bit more about hockey now and oh wow sportsmanship sure can be spicy💀
So, I put aside Good Omens. Impulsively searched up books to read since I was lowkey feeling like I'm about to spiral into a certain genre to read exclusively so before I went too deep, I tried to look for something else. Not too out of my comfort zone (I wasn't too keen in sci-fi, but time-loop hits a bit of a comfort tropes), so I did. And after several minutes of judging the book from it's cover (💀) and reading summaries, i was... Locked into this. The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle (or 7 1/2 in UK, I think). It's about a woman being murdered, and some guy (idk who) have to found the murderer. Time loop is involved, since the guy keeps being out into a different person each loop, presumably to know more about the situation.
it seems so intriguing. And only when I read a measly 11 pages I was reminded of a certain other media. Umineko... YEA... YESSS!!! I haven't read enough but the premise is just✨ and I'd like to savor my time reading it, I'm excited!! This is a preloved book I brought online and the scent, the yellowing paper, the slightly crumpled pages it's lowkey endearing like😭??
AHH I don't know what I'm writing. I'm just excited to start. It's a hella thick book and idk if my brains have the capacity to think and absorb everything lol but I don't mind taking my time!!
P.s. I want to read reviews and look through tags but I think I'll do myself a favor and not spoil myself this EARLY. AAAAAHHHHH
Also. The title reminds me of another title of the book, Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo who I know is mad popular because I've heard talks about it. I may or may not be wanting to put it on to read sooner or later
——-------——------—------—
~P20
This feels like playing a detective game😭 Though I don't play a lot of games so I don't know. But like, in my head I can visually imagine a visual novel interface, a text box, a menu for memory recollection, important information. And now, let's say I'm at the phase to inspect my surrounding!! The room, what clue can I gather from knowing my belongings? (I use first POV because idk who this guy is.)
So. This one, I'm occupying the body of Sebastian B-something.
Oh?? There's going to be a packed cast... An ensemble!! Though idk if all going to appear and make appearance or be any of significant. 20 cast for what I assume the event that the murder took event, and 30 more. I'M EXCITED
-----------------------------------
~P34
If I kept writing thoughts with this pace I'd end up with dozen of post about this book lol
I LIKE IT..... AHHHHH the suspense. the mystery. there's a lot of clues laid out here and there. a backstory. i don't think i'm still anywhere near finishing the introductory phase of what's the story want to tell though.
A person inhabiting Sebastian Bell's body woke up to a woman being chased by a man in coat. This person calls out, 'Anna', and froze a bit before the man in coat shot her. Scared shitless, the man hands him a compass, told him where to go. He arrived at the mansion. Foreign figures, strangers. Daniel Coleridge welcomes him, Doctor Dickie checks on him, and he met one of the son of the house, Michael Hardcastle. A bit about how his family invited people for a party, a lot showed up but talks about them in an annoyed manners. This guy also discovers that his arms, has been slashed, assumed to be acquired in acts of self-defense. Someone is out to chase get him. End.
What I understood.
The guy is not Sebastian Bell. He felt foreign in his body. Memories isn't coming back.
The Hardcastle family is made up of burgoise folks. The Lord of the house moved here because of his failing in politics. I don't remember.
The mansion is located pretty far from crowds and the city. It's surrounded by forests.
Michael Hardcastle is the (youngest) younger Hardcastle? His brother older by two year were murdered when Michael was 5. The perpetrator is two figures, one known and the other unknown until now.
Michael seems like a fun character to read!!! He's easygoing, lively and he was close with Sebastian. Though knowing this story is about murders and all, I can imagine him being killed soon (probably not since that's his sister role!!!) but surely partake in some shady acts.
A guy helped the Hardcastle by avenging? beating up? one of the perpetrator. Ted S-something. He was awarded back then and now he's a snob.
I still don't know who is inside Sebastian's body. The story is told in his POV, but amnesia and all.
I can't make any guesses for now. There's barely anything enough to assume. I feel like even if I do guess stuff I'd feel stupid later on haha
