(I’m maybeillwriteit but this is my main) tell us about the kitty!! What’s their name, and can we see a picture??? Also what’s the book you recommend to everyone?
Storyteller Saturday!
Hello hello @maybeillwriteit! I’d love to tell you about this adorable little terror.
Tumblr media
This is Lucky. He’s the Worst. He’s a 1-ish year old Maine Coon who is afraid of loud noises and hates when you touch his toe beans. He loves playing with hair ties, yelling when he’s bored, belly pets, and hauling ass around the house at 2am. He is very soft and lorge (seriously, he weighs like 25 pounds - he big).
The book I rec to everyone? Hmmmmm.
I mean, I always recommend picking up a short story collection. If you’re not familiar with any authors or short stories in general, I’d suggest grabbing an O’Henry Prize collection or picking up an older issue of Tin House (contemporary fiction) (RIP print publication) or a Barrelhouse (pop culture short stories!) to get you started. If you start with the canon, you might hate it. George Saunders is also a popular favorite, as is Denis Johnson or Aimee Bender if you’re looking for weirder.
I don’t really know about book-books. I have weird taste. But, ya know, in honor of Pride Month, I’m gonna rec a book that changed my life.
The Secret Loves of Geek Girls is a very good non-fiction anthology edited by Hope Nicholson full of stories from women in nerdy industries like comics and books about love. It’s freakin’ amazing, 10/10, Margaret Atwood did comics for it, Trina Robbins is there, Noelle Stevenson is there, freakin’ Marjorie Liu. Please read. There is also kick ass art. I’m a big fan of the “ode to Bioware romances” piece near the end.
There are other ones, too:
The Secret Loves of Geeks (Gerard Way! Patrick Rothfuss! Valentine De Landro! Jamie McKelvie! Kristian Bruun!)

on art collectives, tarot therapy, and witches
I have always had an affinity for collectives of sorts. I just think the cooperation, when the project comes together, always showcases some great work; something so unique birthed from this amalgam of multiple minds' creativity. I have become more aware of such types of collaborations over the years, especially when it comes to the arts. A few of the more recent finds that are all women/all girl collective efforts, I've listed below.
The Secret Love of Geek Girls - this is an anthology created by Hope Nicholson and other artists, of prose and comic forms, which encompasses various topics such as divorce, coming out, asexuality, young love, and other aspects all from the lenses of women who identify and/or embody the idea of a geek. I absolutely loved it.
The Secret Love of Geek Girls: Redux - this is the sequel to The Secret Love of Geek Girls, which has many of the same authors and artists returning with more stories to tell. I excitedly await this in the mail!
Girls Drawin' Girls Tarot Deck - this is a beautiful tarot deck done by the Girls Drawin' Girls, a group formed by Melody Simpsons (who worked on the Simpsons). The group was formed to allow women a space to compete in a traditionally male-dominated industry.
Speaking of tarot, I've gotten very interested in it lately. Not only does it gave a strong history of feminine mysticism but some people in the medical and health professional fields have been starting to use it as a therapeutic device. Jessica Dore uses tarot in her clinical work as she becomes a social worker, and Dr. Art Rosengarten, a clinical therapist, uses tarot for psychotherapy. There are a few older studies (like this one from the 90s) about tarot used for therapy, and the general impression I got is that due to the symbolism, tarot helps to give the clients a more visual way to process out their thoughts and bring forth aspects that are on their subconscious. In my head, if nothing else I see it as being a therapeutic tool, much like the Rorschach (ink blot) test but more multifaceted, and I would love to see more studies done on it. I personally want to learn how to do tarot readings for the storytelling aspect, but if it makes me subsequently be more in the moment, reflexive, or mindful (or if nothing else, distracted from my eczema-induced itching), I’m not complaining.
I personally want to learn how to do tarot readings for the storytelling aspect, but if it makes me subsequently be more in the moment, reflexive, or mindful, I'm not complaining. At the least, it's fun to have a special deck that has art from multiple artists (you know me and collectives!). The current deck I own is the Light Grey Tarot Deck made by the Light Grey Art Lab. And because when I get a passion I go fully into it until it fizzles out, I currently have a friend (who has been reading tarot since age 14 and he's now 28) lined up to teach me and give me books and exercises to read/do. For anyone interested, the book recommendations he gave me so far is The Castle of Crossed Destinies by Italo Calvino, and then Jake (my husband) and I added to other books to this list that we think will also be useful/potentially relevant including: The Book of Margery Kempe and The Creative Tarot: A Modern Guide to an Inspired Life by Jessa Crispin.
Speaking of mysticism, we must then talk about witches. The history of witches in America (as I understand it to be from listening to the tours in Salem and from this Smithsonian article), is mostly a tale of fear mongering. It started in Salem, Massachusetts (at the time the town of Danvers was also a part of Salem). A young girl and her cousin (Elizabeth and Abigail), whose slave (Tituba) used to tell them stories to amuse her and her friends, supposedly faked going into a possessed fits, their friends followed, and then religious men got involved who started calling out all witches to be persecuted (jailed forever it hung generally). A witch ended up encompassing any wayward woman (or sometimes man), such as one who didn't behave as expected, who was promiscuous, who spoke her mind with the candor of a man,  who dabbled in the art of herbal healing, etc, and evidence for arrest included visions for a time. The tension was ramped up because of various families in towns competing for resources and believing the high tensions to be the result of devilry (witches were thought to commune with the devil). I've heard it thought that there may have also been competition for tourism and so slandering the other parts of Salem (e.g. Salem Village versus Salem Town) with the threat of witchcraft was a surefire way to insure more money into your own town (but I'm not sure this is true- I just heard it by word of mouth). The culmination of events led to the infamous Salem Witch Trials, with 200 accused, and the death of 20 people (not including those who died in jail).
Today there is more of a new era of witch culture in America. Well there are two blurred and overlapping lines of "witches". There are the herbalists and healers who had had a bad rap in the past for practicing medicine and healing outside of the realm of religion/formal hospital training, and then there are the new age witches (which can also include herbalists and healers). As I live very close to Salem today and Vermont/Maine, I do get glimpses of both, but only limitedly. A lot of Salem is rampant tourism like the Harry Potter store Wynott’s Wands (though their wares are beautiful and I found out that their wands sell well as batons for conductors, which is really cool).
However then you also do see new modern witchcraft brewing up (pun not intended) as well. There are places like HausWitch, the creation of Erica Feldmann who describes it as "a modern metaphysical lifestyle brand and shop" where they sell "witchy" wares made by independent makers. The most interesting aspect of HausWitch and stores like it are the modernization of witchcraft as an inclusive movement. HausWitch for example, works to create community and thus holds many different events and healing practices and activism discussion among other activities to foster connections. Traditionally, a bunch of witches together in a group was called a coven, and was seen and portrayed as a dangerously bad thing, but in seeing covens today, they are essentially just another form of community with the commonality, instead of being location, being interest. Personally, as a person who is always trying to find ways to foster community wherever I go, I think the whole new resurgence if witchcraft is pretty cool, and I'm excited to learn more about it and see where else in the country it's happening (which reminds me I was gifted a book that is very relevant but I haven't gotten around to reading yet:  Witches of America by Alex Mar).

Strange Stars: Heller takes popular music seriously as a format for science fiction. This is clearly marketed as About Bowie (I believe it was released shortly after his death?) but it’s actually a broad look at the field of sci-fi music in all kinds of genres and from all over the world. Really cool and really engaging.
I’ll Be Gone In The Dark: I suspect anyone who wants to read this one has probably... already done that. Personally, I didn’t read it until after the killer in question was finally caught, so my experience of the book was different than a lot of people’s, but it’s a masterpiece regardless.
Hidden Figures: I got a better sense of the timeline from this book than I did from the film adaptation. You can go into more depth in prose form, and also profile more people. It got a little technical for me at points but was mostly still readable for those of us who never took calculus!
DWJ: Children’s Literature and the Fantastic Tradition: Shoutout to Mendlesohn for writing literally the only monograph in this field so far!  Here they pick apart several recurring themes throughout Jones’ oeuvre. I love that this book contains three distinct readings of Fire and Hemlock because uh yeah there is.... a lot to say about that book.
The Secret Loves Of Geeks: A follow-up to The Secret Loves Of Geek Girls, opening the conversation up to geeks of all genders. As cute, charming, heartwarming, tragic, awkward, and relatable as the first instalment. Can’t wait to get my hands on the upcoming Secret Loves of Geek Girls: Redux!

Kickstarter ‘Gold’ brings back 7 comic projects
Kickstarter is giving new life to several of their past campaigns, including seven of them from the comics category.
“Kickstarter Gold” brings back projects by creators who were “specially selected for their creativity, ingenuity and past success on Kickstarter,” the site reads. “We’re spotlighting them because they do excellent work — and because creators who repeatedly use Kickstarter to support and sustain creative ventures are an integral part of our community’s ecosystem.”
From June 20 to July 31, Kickstarter Gold will spotlight creators as they run new projects inspired by favorite rewards and ideas from their past campaigns. The 49 projects currently listed as Kickstarter Gold projects includes these seven from comic creators, who are doing things like adding new pages to their projects, remastering them or offering new merchandise:
Black: If successful, toner, Derwin Roberson will remaster the entire book for all backers.
Plume #1: If successful, backers will receive the first issue of the series from Devil’s Due Entertainment with a gold foil-stamped cover.
The Secret Loves of Geek Girls: Redux!: The already-successful campaign will bring to life another anthology featuring all the creators from the popular first edition.
Recurring Dreams of Herbert Crowley : Publisher Beehive Books has added a line of limited edition of archival giclée fine art prints as rewards.
Happily Ever Aftr The Graphic Novel: If successful, the creators will expand the story started in their first issue into a full graphic novel.
All-Star FUBAR: The new 220-page volume of the popular historical zombie comic will feature new work from Jeff McClelland, Jason Copland, Matt Miner and may more.
The Lions of Valletta Director’s Cut: The already-successful campaign will add new pages, footnotes and more to this charming comic about cats in Malta.
Head over to Kickstarter to see ALL the “Gold” projects, including a new prose “Choose Your Own Path” adventure from Squirrel Girl writer Ryan North or the Table Titans tabletop RPG set, based on the popular webcomic.

Reckoning Jena Leigh (The Variant Series, #4) Publication date: June 20th 2017 Genres: Paranormal, Science Fiction, Young Adult
Alexandra Parker came home from the past only to find herself in the middle of an underground war—one that could affect the fate of Variants everywhere.
Fighting an all-powerful government agency is tough enough, but when a secret from John Grayson’s past comes back to haunt them all, the group’s united front begins to crumble. And when Alex’s own painful memories threaten to push her past her breaking point, the uprising stands to lose its most powerful weapon.
With their lives and their freedom on the line, can Declan, Nate, and the rest of the Grayson family hold it together long enough to bring down Director Carter and derail Brian’s apocalyptic visions?
As Alex struggles to master her most volatile ability yet, only one thing is certain: the uprising’s cold war with the Agency is about to turn red hot.

EXCERPT:
“Would you like to continue?” Brandt asked, his tone mocking. “Or do you need a break?”
Alex wiped distractedly at her brow, straightened her posture, and gave a nod. “I’m ready. Let’s keep going.”
Brandt smiled. “As you wish, little girl.”
He split the fiery orb he held in two before allowing each of them to double in size—and then he lobbed one of them directly at her head.
Standing as they were, only a few yards apart, she barely had time to dive out of the way. The fireball hit the ground just behind her, singeing the earth to a blackened char before fizzling out.
Alex got back to her feet. Again, Brandt split the orb he held in two before sending one spiraling toward her face.
This time she was ready and managed to catch the blazing orb just a few fleeting inches from the tip of her nose. She shrank the ball little by little until she was able to force it to blink out entirely.
Distracted as she was by her efforts, she almost failed to notice the next orb hurtling her way. It took everything she had to react in time to catch that one, too, and dissolve it. This time, she glanced up to discover two fiery masses spiraling in her direction.
Again, Alex was forced to redouble her efforts in order to catch both simultaneously and dissipate them.
And then there were three.
Four.
Five.
Soon Alex’s world consisted only of the flames hurtling toward her and the effort it required to force each orb out of existence.
Within another two minutes, the number of orbs being launched simultaneously in her direction had hit double digits.
Drowning beneath the constant onslaught, Alex grew desperate.
“Brandt, stop!” she gasped out. “Please!”
Instead of slowing, the speed and strength of his volleys intensified.
“Stop?” he repeated, incredulous. “I thought you were here this morning to learn. To train. Are you really going to give up so easily, little girl?”
Exhaustion turned swiftly to rage. Alex growled as she countered orb after orb, dissolving each one with barely an instant remaining to prepare for the next explosive torrent.
“Stop calling me little girl,” she spat through clenched teeth, struggling to hold back the barrage.
“Then stop acting like one,” he replied. “If you just wait around for people to start taking you seriously, you’re never gonna get anywhere. You want to go toe-to-toe with the boys? You want to stand on an equal playing field? Newsflash, little girl. Such a field doesn’t exist. Not for you.” She could feel the anger burning through her, hotter even than the fire she wielded.
“Don’t ask to be their equal,” Brandt said. “Demand it. Then ready yourself so that, when the time comes, you leave them all behind. Make certain that there will be no doubt that you’re so much more than they ever dreamed.”
Alex could feel her strength—and her ability to focus—waning. She had seconds at most before her concentration gave out and the hailstorm of orbs made contact.
Summoning the last of her willpower, Alex took hold of every lick of fire in the open field, including the ones Brandt still held. Ripping them away from his control, she stretched out her arms, drew the nearly two dozen orbs toward her, and formed a veritable wall with them… and then she catapulted them all back toward her opponent.
Eyes widening in surprise behind his wire-rimmed glasses, Brandt stumbled backward, unable to stop the attack that was now heading straight for him.
