When I was young, we had this old school mercury thermometer on the wall next to our kitchen sink.  It had one tube for the indoor temperature and one for outdoor, which was measured via a metal probe that fed out through the wall of the house and hung below our eaves trough.  

This was the 1970s, so Canada had only recently switched to the metric system (1975, btw) and the thermometer was graded in both Fahrenheit and Celsius.  If the temperature was below freezing, there was a blue background and above freezing it was red.  I remember staring at it as a kid and trying to figure out the relationship between the two systems.  Forty years later and I still haven’t made sense of it.  Fahrenheit is just weird.

The point of the story is that the highest measurement on the thermometer was 40 degrees Celsius and the lowest was -40 degrees Celsius.  This being temperate Vancouver Island, we never got anywhere near the two extremes, which made them seem exotic.  Desert heat and polar cold.  

Ottawa is neither a desert nor anywhere near a polar region, but at least once a year, we hit 40C in the summer and -40C in the winter.  Which for a temperate west coast kid like me, is also just weird.
