WIP title ask meme

Prompt: Make a new post with the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. I was poked to do this months ago, twice at least - once by @docholligay and I think the second was @jeejyboard, but I can't find the tag for the life of me. SORRY. I felt like doing something a bit more meta today re:writing and post about The Process, and this was a perfect excuse - thanks for thinking of me. So here's some actual effort! I went and dug deep, trawled through some really old stuff, which was fun. I write and scribble down way, way more than I actually polish and post (which I assume is probably normal, but who knows). 

General info, for whoever is interested: I mostly use Google Docs with offline backups for fic writing, as I shift between computers a ton, and I put fandom tags at the start of my filenames for organisation. I have a ton of prompt/meme/ask/event collection files - for example, the very latest: "[BG3, STRAHD, SM] Fic Prompts 2024". In these I jot down both the prompts people send or that are listed and the ideas/outlines/notes for each, then when I really get going with a certain fic I spin it off into a separate document. 

I hate coming up with titles and usually do that last, so most of my document names are silly references for my own amusement or just a boring old brief description of the main concept. For instance, my latest posted fic Cerimonia Compedum was for most of its WIP-hood known simply as "[BG3] Tadpoled Isobel". Sometimes I keep different versions/revisions/parts of the same WIP in different files, and if that's the case I've grouped them here. Note that for simplicity's sake this post includes my "solo" fic only, no collabs or coauthored stuff, of which there is also a bunch. 

Some of these are ancient and hit me in the face with "12 years ago" timestamps. Some ficlets will never make it out of the mixed prompt plot bunny dumping grounds into their own doc. I think Sailor Moon 10-ish years ago was the one outlier fandom where I actually wrote most of my concepts out fully and posted them. The ol' brain is currently overproducing stuff for the more recent BG3 flavoured moon lesbians (and no, that ship name will never stop throwing my HaruMichi-loving ass for a loop). Note that some of the SU WIPs on the list I've already posted about here, here, here, and here.

Obviously all of these vary wildly in terms of completion level, word count, refinement, and age (and capitalisation, apparently). So yeah, here's the list, roughly sorted by fandom - ask away, if you feel like it!

5. Books or authors that influenced your style the most.

The writing on Battlestar Galactica and Knights of the Old Republic for sure. I want to write something that hits the same chords as Goblin one day. I like stories that might be tonally dark but the characters bring moments of humor or heartwarming to them

In terms of straight up books, I very much love Terry Pratchett and Ilona Andrews. For Pretentious Writing i’ll admit i’m a big Faulkner fan.

8. Favorite trope to write.new old flame / working with ex / reconciled exes is always my favorite. i like writing through whole relationship cycles i guess lol. i also love reincarnation tropes a lot too

instead of being like TROPES I’LL NEVER WRITE, i’ll just say that i have a really difficult time writing the common fluff tropes (sharing a bed, cave-in, h/c, etc.).

To recap on what the Hell has happened here...

I made the mistake of not agreeing with a meme of child Cosette from Les Miserables guillotining the queen of England.   I said repeatedly, at the start, that I didn't disagree with the sentiment, just the visual.  For starters, Cosette was from Les Miserables, set after the French revolution.    Second, I'm not a fan of the pro-guillotine stuff, no matter who it is.  I made the mistake of saying whole families, including toddlers, were put to death during the French revolution.

Suddenly I was bombarded with hate messages, most anonymous. Calling me a dumb ass, and pro-monarchy.  One telling me to kill myself.   Lots insisting no children died during the French revolution.  I acknowledge that no baby was likely decapitated but most children of aristocrats didn't go on to lead happy lives.   I tried pointing out what happened to Marie Antoinette's ten-year-old son only for about five people to tell me "He died of Tuberculosis!"  Yeah, but even for the era they said his body was in terrible shape from neglect, starvation, and violent abuse.

I got a few "So what?  What do I care what happened to some pampered brats when so many poor kids were dropping dead in the streets?" type messages.

One asked me if I have ever read any books about the French revolution.  With tongue firmly in cheek I mentioned A Tale of Two Cities and The Scarlet Pimpernel before linking a real source of biography.com but this earned SEVERAL responses for me using novels as "Sources." Mostly mocking memes.

Then they started joining the Sandman Discord server just to call me a dumb ass.

About ten had to be blocked, all insisting they’re “not romanticizing” the French revolution while most of them had what looked like Hetalia fan art avatars dressed in eighteenth century clothes.  The rest had artwork of the French revolution as their pictures. Like they all descended from a particular Facebook group.  Just because you’re obsessed with something doesn’t mean you’re always right.     

Tumblr is now what it was (if not worse than what it was) in 2014...  That's pretty much it.

Edit:  And now I just got an anon telling me that if the children were allowed to live it would have weakened the revolution and if i had really been born to poverty I would not be against killing the children of the oppressors.   And this is when I shut anonymous questions off.  When an anon (Deliberately or not) paraphrases the Mein Kompf explanation on The Final Solution while ironically saying I don’t understand history.

Interesting hot take to try to bully someone into being okay with baby murder so long as it’s the ���right” babies...

Fave book: ugh it's been a good while since i have even so much as Touched a book. but uh The Scarlet Pimpernel is still the one I advocate reading if you can parse older English writing. it's a vigilante story during the French Revolution and it inspired Batman. and it's funny as hell sometimes. read it

Fave song currently: Breezy Slide by BDG and Louie Zong was the collab of the century and it's easily wormed its way into my ears

Fave flower: i still have such a soft spot for pansies. they're little and colorful and so very soft and delicate and i just like em a lot

Fave anime: pfffff uhhhhh that's hard. i genuinely think Free! Iwatobi Swim Club is probably the anime I love the most and have the least issues with in its entirety... though I've only seen the first two seasons and haven't caught up with the rest of it yet. it's got everything you'd ever want out of an anime. it gives you beautiful visuals, fun and adorable moments, and also scenes that will rip your heart out and make you think about your life

Fave film: Ah Yes. Films. the things i definitely watch a lot of. honest to god idk if i could name a film that i would rank definitively above others cuz i like a lot of em but i couldn't really tell you why have a few for reasons: the Steven Universe movie is a ride, i watched Howl's Moving Castle a second time right after watching it for the first time, and Happy Feet. no further explanation

Last Song: I’m currently listening to “Falcon in the Dive” from the Scarlet Pimpernel musical on loop. I watched one or two Scarlet Pimpernel movies when I was just barely too young to fully get what was going on, and the story’s held an odd but deep-seated place in my heart ever since. A few years ago I found out there’s a musical and most of the songs are pretty stellar (go listen to “Madame Guillotine” if you like big ensemble broadway numbers, it’s a banger, the bit where he cries out for God has been running through my mind on and off for a few days now haha not like that’s topical or anything), so every once in a while I spend a few days listening to them a lot.

Sometime last year I read the actual book, and got super into the whole concept of the Scarlet Pimpernel for a while. I plotted out Pimpernel aus for several fandoms, I read the entire wikipedia article, and I went looking for bootlegs of the musical. I didn’t find one, but I did find a full radioplay-style recording of the script, complete with full musical numbers, and listened to it like a podcast.

Reader, I was so disappointed. The play adds some scenes, bc a lot of the dramatic tension of the novel comes from internal conflict and that doesn’t stage super well, and the very first scene of this play – a play written in the NINETIES – features our dashing hero rescuing some aristocrats from a French prison, and then saying to the person in the next cell, who begs for rescue but is not an aristocrat, “We have enough of your kind in England.”

Enough! of your KIND! What in the merry frickety HECK my dudes!! The book has some rather unfortunate™ takes but it is from 1905, it’s regrettable but sadly to be expected. This play is from 1997. It has NO excuse. This scene wasn’t even in the book! What! the heck!

I was so disheartened that I lost my excitement for the play, and a couple songs later I stopped listening. It occurred to me just a few days ago that you could actually stage that ironically, with the person in the cell giving the audience a “can you believe this” look, and then the rest of the play could feature assorted non-aristocratic ensemble members constantly looking at the audience like they’re on The Office. And hey, maybe that’s what they did, or something similar – maybe that was never meant to be taken as a cleanly heroic stance, and the play deals with it in a complex way. It’s possible. I wouldn’t know. Kinda doubt it though, based on song lyrics.

Favorite Color: red, probably

Last Movie: I watched that new lesbian christmas movie with my family for christmas, the one with kirsten stewart and the guy from schitt’s creek. it’s very sweet and good and kinda sad, and I really enjoyed it. it also incidentally has the best gay best friend trope in probably anything ever, bc it’s not a trope (I didn’t realize until several hours after watching that it technically fits), it’s just a guy who is the protagonist’s best friend, and they’re just all gay, and then when he Gives Relationship Advice as a gay best friend always does, it’s advice about how to deal with your partner’s hangups around coming out.

actually every part of the gay best friend trope becomes better when they’re just best friends who are both gay. the big dramatic gestures (in this case, driving some ungodly distance in the snow on no notice) go from “haha how kooky” to “queer man will do anything he needs to to rescue his queer friend from an isolating & potentially triggering situation”. the relationship advice isn’t “honey you deserve some self-respect, treat yourself”, it’s a deeply sincere reminder of the vulnerability that is shared across almost everyone’s queer experience, and look I could ramble about this for a long time before reaching a coherent point but I’m INTO IT, okay? I’m into it.

Last Show: you want me to remember what show I last finished???? impossible, cannot be done, it was a long time ago and the adhd has eaten everything that happened before last week. here, instead I’ll tell you about another movie I watched, late at night with my mom in cozy companionship just a couple days ago. it’s called Quigley Down Under and it’s about a cowboy who goes to Australia and kills a bunch of racists, 10/10 would watch again. it’s from 1990 but it feels much older, with the music choices and the cinematography of a 70s Western. the cowboy is great, honorable and fearless and kind, but the breakaway star of this movie for me is the woman who attaches herself to his side and refuses to leave. her name is Cora, and she’s crazy, in the sense that she’s not altogether tethered to reality, but this never for a second diminishes her agency. she’s fierce and clever and compassionate, and she basically never does anything she doesn’t want to in the whole movie. her arc is about overcoming trauma by taking charge of her own fear and facing it head-on, she is never belittled or dismissed by the narrative or the protagonist, and look she’s just so cool. I love her. she’s so vibrantly alive. her story could probably have been handled with a bit more nuance, but honestly for the 90s it’s pretty great. I’m no expert, but I found nothing objectionable in it, just a bit of heavy-handedness.

anyway the theme of the movie is that racism is evil and racists deserve to be shot, and this too could have been handled better (not a single aboriginal character speaks a single line of english in this movie), but it follows through on that message in every way, while still being a fun kinda campy cowboy movie. overall a very good time.

Currently Watching: started showing my sister Hilda the other day, and she’s liking it! I love that show, it’s so incredibly cute. can’t wait to see season 2

Currently Reading: lmao I wish. lately the brain has firmly rejected all attempts to read anything of any length. currently pending, bc I was halfway through them when my brain stalled out, are tano’s fic What Does Kill You Can Make You Stronger, Too, a Toby Daye book - I think it was The Brightest Fell, I got like half a chapter in and haven’t picked it up in over a month, the Locked Tomb series, and probably a few other things too. ooh! also a book called Making Sex by thomas laqueur, which is my fancy academic reading that I’ve been doing in short bursts for the past year or two when I feel fancy and academic. it’s about the development of the concept of biological sex and of gender in Western society, and it’s fascinating. has among other things introduced me to the idea that until quite recently, fathers were a matter of faith. the mother? yeah, you can watch the baby pop out, we all know who the mother is. but the father? how can you know? how can you really know? we have paternity tests these days, but for all of human history up until now, we've just had to take fatherhood on faith. (not to mention we didn’t even know what fathers were contributing to the production of a fetus. clearly it was something, since you can’t get pregnant without a penis getting involved, but we have literally not known what until the past few decades. and that is wild. it has colored ALL of human history, all of our conceptions of society and family and kinship and gender, all of it, and it hadn’t even occurred to me until it was spelled out for me in this book, and it’s just......wow.

Salty, sweet or savory: for christmas my sister and I made seven different types of cookie, most of them involving chocolate somehow.

Craving: no bc I ate so many cookies. unless sleep counts. or maybe pringles, it’s been many moons since last I had a potato chip and I miss them.

Gweilge wasn’t fond of stealing.

Even after all these years, it still left him with a filthy, sticky feeling of shame which clung to his skin long after the act, like a layer of grime no amount of cleaning in a fresh, crystalline stream could wash away.

Yet if it was the price needed in exchange for non-humans living better lives, Gweilge thought, he was more than willing to pay up — no matter how rank the currency.

Crouching as he was in the shadows looming down the side of the imposing mansion that was his next target, he was thoroughly invisible but for the wisps of silver smoke blooming before his mouth in the cold night air.

Storeroom should be right down this way, he calculated, his gaze trained on the outline of a wooden doorframe jutting out from the semi-regular pattern of the stone wall. The moon was curled up under a thick cloudy blanket tonight, shrouding the entire courtyard behind the estate in darkness, but Gweilge had ample practise coaxing the secrets of the night into revealing themselves to him; after waiting long minutes with his back pressed against the wall, repressing the shivers tickling his spine, he began making out vague shapes amidst the gloom. As loath as he was to admit it (even and perhaps most to himself), his rather vast thieving experience had also taught him to closely inspect his surroundings before making any move — which meant he already knew the door he was looking for should be situated at six blocks’ distance and would likely be easy to open due to its outdated, brittle locking mechanism.

top 5 broadway musicals

I’m gonna totally cheat on this one, since two of them never made it to Broadway. Also, this is definitely a Personal Favorite sort of Top 5, not an Objectively Best sort of Top 5. Because what is objectivity, even, anyway?

5. The Phantom of the Opera: I tried not to include this in my top 5. I really did. But my junior high school self, with her fanfiction and her role-playing games and her Prodigy and CompuServe message board alter egos, definitely just time-traveled straight to 2017 and glared at me until I agreed to include it on this list. It should be noted, however, that I always liked the Susan Kay version of the story far better than the ALW musical.

4. Notre Dame de Paris: I saw this three times in Las Vegas but, yeah, this never made it to Broadway. Noises were made about moving it to New York back in 2000, but it just never worked as well for American audiences as it did for Quebecois and European ones. Sad, because I loved loved LOVED this show. It wasn’t a GOOD show, I think. But. But I loved it. I can still sing most of Quasimodo’s songs. Fleur-de-Lis’s songs, too. And don’t even get me STARTED on the fandom rabbit hole that Gringoire’s songs (and Gringoire himself) sent me down. 

3. The Scarlet Pimpernel: I have no idea whether this is a good musical or not. I haven’t sought out a production of it in about 17 years, because I’m kind of terrified of finding out. But I saw this show in each of its Broadway incarnations, proposed marriage to one of the actors (I was 15; hopefully he just thought I was cute, not creepy), and am still in touch with some of the friends I made through that show. This story also started my love affair with characters who have double identities. It should be noted that, back in high school, I read every single book in the series this show (and all the movies) was based on. There were 15 of them, 14 of which were long since out of print.

2. Hamilton: I honestly wanted to keep this list to, like, stuff written before 2000, because that was when my Musical Theater Love was at its strongest. But like… like, Hamilton. Like. I want to be above this, but let us be real. Nobody is above this.

1. Bat Boy: This show was my college life. It played for 8 months at a theater less than a 10-minute walk from my dorm(s), and I saw it [mumble] times in its off-Broadway incarnation alone. Ten more than that if you count the community theater productions and, uh, London production. And that time I went up to Leeds the summer BEFORE the London production so I could see the pre-London tryout. It was… a very important show. For me. Yyyyyyyyyeah.

30. Favorite line you’ve ever written.not a line, but i really enjoy writing anything between maz and kylo. im pretty pleased with the bit where she leaves him a candy bar and then tells him he’s a total mess of a human being.

31. Hardest character to write.

in terms of characterization, rey can get pretty hard. doing a lot of Arcs and that makes it difficult.

in terms of, like, logistics, aalto. why i decided alternate universes, prophecy, and time travel were all good traits to put into one character i’ll never know

35. Tell some backstory details about one of your characters in your story ________.let’s go with orin!

-an estranged member of a mandalorian clan, and hasn’t seen any of her family for nearly two decades

-decided to be come a doctor when she was in her early 20s and trained under harter kalonia

-met dolari for the first time at a cantina, where orin was tending bar while she went to space med school. the two have been together secretly for over 10 years

-has only met aalto out of the knights of ren, due to dolari + aalto having more of a sibling relationship 

-does. not . like him.

-when dolari stays at her clinic, she tries to keep plants. they all end up dying due to her powers, but orin does her best to resuscitate them & keeps them on the windowsills

-it was orin’s idea for them to have a hobby farm since miniature tauntauns are harder to kill than plants. because orin is allergic, they are actually hypoallergenic mini tauntauns

-usually isn’t here for this force nonsense. though is, unfortunately, force sensitive herself. orin and dolari have a pointed agreement to Not Talk About It

Fanfic Ask Meme - Thanks for the questions, @tasteofthebitchpudding!

b. Are any stories inspired by personal experience?

     None of my stories are entirely based on personal experience.  That being said, I make use of conversations and imagined events made up by myself and my other siblings.  In terms of direct personal experience, I’m currently working on a Phantom Modern AU in a college setting, and that’s based off of personal experience at my college, as well as stories given to me by fellow peers and my piano professor.

n. Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?

     Anything Cherik, really.  I don’t see enough phanfiction for him.  A couple of stories I’d like to see completed are “Forevermore” by @staminaoverlook, “Haunted by the Opera Ghost”, by @jamiepage19, and “Out of the Woods” by @wheel-of-fish.  

     Another fic I’d love to read (not quite PoTO) is a mash-up of great Victorian works/timeless classic characters, such as the Phantom, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, the Count of Monte Cristo, the Invisible Man, Dorian Gray, Sherlock Holmes, with a special guest appearance from the Scarlet Pimpernel and others.

    Also, if anyone wants to write all my stories for me, that would be great.

t. Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?

     I can’t stand how Raoul is bashed or made to be less important/caring/loving, or made to be more of a shallow, one-dimensional character.  Raoul is one of my favorite characters, and he’s better than what a lot of people credit him.

     Let’s see…other things…uh…I’m not a fan of smut? I don’t know if that counts as a trope, but I don’t read fics with that stuff.  I find it hard to imagine, especially with characters from Phantom.  I don’t like it when people make Erik abusive or a jerk, and still try to justify Christine staying with him.  That’s not how life should work.  That’s not a good relationship.
