My take on the 'MC is too mean to Sylus' discourse is that anyone who thinks MC should be super sweet and deferential to him has played the game with their eyes closed.

Yes, occasionally MC is a bit tone-deaf in conversations, but most of the time Sylus is having the time of his life just interacting with her. He might grumble or pout or something if MC is rude- but you can see he's usually chuckling richly and smirking at her. He adores their banter. He likes that he can't control her and she's her own person.

I say all this because when MC compliments him here, Sylus doesn't even acknowledge it, almost as if it makes him uncomfortable:
