Evan ‘Buck’ Buckley: Whenever Buck wears red

Buck rarely wears the color red but whenever he has worn it in the past, it was related to the love he has for his Diaz boys, his son Christopher and his husband everything Eddie.

In 3x1 “Kids Today” Buck wore a white t-shirt with a red button-down shirt on top of it so that he and Christopher could spend the day together after Eddie dropped Christopher off at his loft.  They ended up on the pier and they spent time playing games, riding carnival rides and talking about life but no one knew that a Tsunami was going to hit the pier not long after they decided to take a break and rest while sitting on a bench.

After the wave hit the shore, Buck was submerged in the water but when he emerged, he started shouting for Christopher.  Christopher heard him and he shouted back.  Buck swam to get him but he missed and then he swam back out into the water and when Christopher went under Buck did too and saved him.

In 5x13 “Fear-O-Phobia” both Diaz boys were in trouble during Eddie’s breakdown.  There’s an important thing to note here because when Buck went to the loft after he left work, he wasn’t wearing the clothes he had on when Christopher called him.  He changed his clothes and when his cell phone rang, he came downstairs to answer it and that’s when he was wearing a vibrant red button-down jacket/shirt on top of his navy-blue t-shirt.  

He ran out of his loft after he heard Chris tell him that something was wrong with Eddie.  After he arrived, he used his key, entered the house and immediately started calling for Chris.  He ran over to him and that’s when Chris told Buck that the door was locked and Eddie wasn’t responding to him when he called his name.

Buck called for Eddie through the door too but he couldn’t get Eddie to respond either, so he broke down Eddie’s bedroom door.  When he looked around the room, he panicked and he quietly called Eddie’s name twice because he was trying to prepare himself to see Eddie’s lifeless body.  That’s been one of Buck’s fears since Eddie was trapped in The Well.  

Eddie started crying loudly when he heard Buck’s voice calling for him and Buck immediately ran over to be by Eddie’s side.

After Buck put Chris to bed, he joined Eddie in the dining room so they could continue talking.  Buck was gentle with Eddie; he gave Eddie the time he needed to tell him what was wrong which also allowed Eddie to continue being vulnerable in front of Buck.  They entered a territory within their relationship that illustrated how much they love each other; how enormous their love is for The Buckley-Diaz Family and their interactions also demonstrated how there are no boundaries they wouldn’t cross to save the other one.  They hadn’t previously been in this territory before but it was all about vulnerability since they already trust each other with their lives and they had already seen the other one on the brink of death, i.e., Eddie saw Buck after the ladder truck explosion and his embolism while Buck saw Eddie trapped in a well and after he got shot.  Buck had never seen Eddie cry and Eddie hadn’t ever allowed himself to cry in front of anyone the way he did in front of Buck.  That’s love! 

In 5x18 “Starting Over” Buck had a conversation with Maddie while they sat on his balcony.  He was wearing another red button-down shirt with a white t-shirt underneath it but his red shirt was an even deeper shade of red than the ones he wore in 3x1-3x2 and 5x13. They were talking about a victim who ended up with amnesia after a car accident but the conversation changed when they started talking about a Rom Com movie.  Buck was finally able to define what love really means to him after he asked Maddie if it was really love when a person does the same thing over and over again.  Or if it was love when two people see each other at their worsts and they still decide to try again (related post).  Well, he was defining the relationship he’s always had with Eddie because they’ve seen each other at their worsts and they have never given up on each other.

As time progressed, the color of Buck’s red shirts became more vibrant and when he was finally able to define what loves means to him in 5x18, the color of his shirt was a deep albeit vibrant red that illustrated not only what loves means to him but it also illustrated who he loves, it’s Eddie and it will always be Eddie.  Buck loves Eddie and Christopher so much and it’s been illustrated through the clothes he’s worn for more than 4 years.  Buck and Eddie can’t live without each other and whenever they’ve been faced with losing each other in the past, neither of them could handle it.  Buck and Eddie are in love with each other but they’re both too scared to verbally admit it.  They’re co-parents to Christopher; they both love him unconditionally and neither of them would hesitate to die for him.  They’re a family your honor and whenever Buck wears the color red it’s related to the love that he has for his Diaz boys.

time to say sth that will get me executed BUT like... everyone kept saying that the outfit buck was wearing in 5x18 while talking to maddie about what being in love meant was intentionally made to look like the one he was wearing in the tsunami, and like, it’s a bit similar, true, but we’re picking an outfit buck wore preciously that looks like the 5x18 outfit it’s DEFINITELY the one he wore in 2x08 while he hooked up with taylor

the jacket/red shirt even has the same texture asdfghj. do i think it means anything? nope. do i like bucktaylor? hell no. do i ship buddie? absolutely. but sometimes the clothes are just clothes, just like THE white button down with black stripes buck wore when eddie got shot and an almost identical one, only with short sleeves, he wore while talking to maddie in 5x13. was it very jarring to see him wear sth so very similar to the shooting outfit? yes, it was, but clearly it was not meant to be a big deal lol

and it’s not even me saying that clothes are just clothes and there was no thinking put into those outfits and their possible meaning. it’s just me saying, let’s not ignore the fact that we literally saw him wear sth way more similar than the tsunami outfit before
