2022 Wrap up (4 Top 5)
Hello and happy holidays! Over the last few weeks I have been pouring over lists of the top albums, songs and movies of 2022, thrilled to see what the world (or at least high budget magazines) are saying about these past twelve months. This year has felt a little more ‘normal’ (not really sure what that word means anymore, or if it even should exist) than the past two and as a result we have received a lot of exciting art.
If I love anything, its making lists. I love keeping track of what media I have consumed, things I need to buy, people I have been romantic with (zodiac signs included), and ranking my various ‘best of’s’. Below you will find 4 lists of my Top 5 of 2022; TV shows, movies, albums and songs. Each selection is deserving of its own several page deep-dive, but I limited myself to a one-sentence review of each as I know attention spans are quite fleeting these days (my own included). Please enjoy and share your own thoughts!
TV Shows:
HOT D, Season 1
Game of Thrones with a bigger budget, advanced technology and more feminism.
2. Rings of Power, Season 1
Like HOT D, Lord of the Rings but with more than just white men, and a $1M/minute budget (yes, you read that right).
3. Our Flag Means Death, Season 1
Taika Waititi’s new project about gay pirates—do I need to say anything more?
4. Derry Girls, Season 3
Martin Scorsese likes this show, so if my endorsement isn’t enough for you his should be.
5. The Summer I Turned Pretty, Season 1
I feel like most of my life is trying to get back to being a teenage girl and this show really did that for me.
Movies:
Bones and All, Luca Guadagnino
A coming of age cannibal love story that makes you scream, jump, plug your ears, cover your eyes, laugh and cry—what more could you want?
2. Aftersun, Charlotte Wells
Beautiful imagery, incapacitatingly sad plot (my favorite juxtaposition).
3. X, Ti West
A love letter to horror film, chock full of references that made me feel like all my years spent on horror amounted to something.
4. Bodies, Bodies, Bodies, Halina Rejin
I love blood, I love girls, I love a whodunit, I love jokes—this is my dream film, also Pete Davidson is in it.
5. Tar, Todd Field
This movie is making fun of high-brow art which is funny because this movie is loved by people who love high-brow art.
Albums:
Preacher’s Daughter, Ethel Cain
A 75-minute concept album tackling love, abuse, lots of God, sex and being cannibalized with memorizing vocals, quite the feat for a debut LP.
2. Being Funny in a Foreign Language, The 1975
From dick jokes and a pop song about incel mass shootings to devastating breakup anthems, this album makes you experience most emotions.
3. Renaissance, Beyoncé
This album proves that Beyoncé can literally do anything well; a disco-club-banger-no-skips album invocative of the 70s but that absolutely hits in 2022? No problem. (sorry, this is technically two sentences)
4. Motomami, ROSALIA
Being A Bad Bitch in a Foreign Language: I have no idea what she’s saying but the emotion she conveys through her voice and the flawlessly produced beats transcend language.
5. Caprisongs, FKA Twigs
Another club-banger of an album which deals with being both hot and sad at the same time, relatable.
Songs:
Part of the Band, The 1975
There is so much to say about this song but the ‘Vaccinista, tote bag chic baristas’ line changed my life and I haven’t been the same since.
2. Killer, FKA Twigs
She called this ‘a song for baddies with a tear in their eyes’ and I cannot say anything better.
3. Anti-Hero, Taylor Swift
Famous for being vulnerable, Taylor reaches a new level of honesty with this song, expressing the very unrelatable difficulties that come along with being Taylor Swift in an extremely relatable way.
4. Hard Times, Ethel Cain
A song about a horrific topic, sung in the most ethereal way with stunning guitar accompaniment— once again, we love juxtaposition on this blog.
5. Weird Goodbyes, The National Ft. Bon Iver
The saddest lyrics you will ever hear, overlayed with a sick 808 beat.

My fics in 2020
I am proud of this year. I worked hard until the end. 2020 was my year of finishing my stories. I have done so much and next year I want to do more. So keep an eye out Jester will take over.
Fandom(s): BTS, mentions of NCT, BLACKPINK, MONSTA X.
Networks:@btscreatorscorner @castlebangtan
Total Fics: 34
Total chapters: 404
Total Words: 565,587 Total vids and fake subs: 13
Best and Worst Title?
Best: ‘Music is the spark that sets my soul on fire’ and its sequel ‘Dance is the celebration of the flame’
Worst: The Check Up
Best and Worst first line?
Best: Yoongi never understood why people would say one's blood is important. (Mania)
Worst: It all started in Mykonos. (Steal my sunshine)
Best and Worst ending line?
Best: “I got you this pretty dress” Seokjin grinned showing you the dress before hugging you and giving your forehead a kiss, “Let’s go burn it” (Me & the ghost in number 23)
Worst: But all you got was a sharp-toothed smile. (Pandemonium)
Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than, or about what was expected?
I think I wrote what I expected, but I think I could have definitely finished more. Which is a bit upsetting.
What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted last year?
I don’t have limitations to my writing so nothing is deemed unpredictable.
I am however generally surprised by my love of throwing in twists and also gore, I love gore.
What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
Wild space: it is strange because I am not particularly a fan of space and scifi, but I am really into writing world building things and having the ability to create a whole planet was amazing.
Most popular story?
Tumblr:
Seoulmates
Femme
Quarantine
AO3:
Quarantine
BTS365
Love Listening
Story most underappreciated by the universe?
Tiny Tan: Limited Edition
Story that could have been better?
All
Sexiest story?
Love Listening
Saddest story?
Me & the ghost in number 23
Fluffiest story?
Mall Santa
Most fun story?
BTS Among Us
Hardest story to write?
Kisaeng
Daylight (i'm still writing it haha)
Easiest/most fun story to write?
Light it up
What story took the longest?
365 lol took all year
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
The biggest risk I took all year was posting my work. Living life on the edge.
What are your fic writing goals for next year?
To double my writing
Fics that you wrote in 2020:
BTS365: 365 mini stories ✓ fluff, comedy, angst, romance, mature, action, adventure, smut. This has it all. Find your birthday and read your story. I wanted to give something unique to people.
Quarantine: 100 Chapters ✓ Something to accompany you while you are alone during quarantine and the pandemic. I was lonely and I figured so was everyone else. So, I decided to have BTS help us all go on an adventure that didn’t focus on the covid virus but on some other aspects around it.
Femme: 50 Chapters ✓ A futuristic world where women are rare. This was an indulgement fic that gave circumstances for the reader to be in a polyamorous relationship with the boys and live a glamorous life. Ending was a bit rushed.
Seoulmates: 29 (ongoing) Each member of BTS has a unique soulmate bond. I love the idea of this, another indulgent fic but you aren’t alone with the boys you have friends and you can play different parts.
Witching: 11 Chapter ✓ When your brother goes missing trying to find them gets you in a turf war between two covens. This fic was actually a way for me to vent for a project I wanted to complete but the project is so big that I wrote this instead.
Herb: 2 Parts ✓ mature, smut. Jimin claims he has everything you need, he doesn’t disappoint. I came across this idea within the 365’s and extended it because I liked the idea so much. Jimin has everything from casseroles to scarfes, cat food to cell phone chargers and the reader just wants to be loved and relieve stress.
Limited Edition: 10 Chapters ✓ BTS boys are sold as limited edition figurines. This was originally me venting about not having any merch and then became a daydream that what if the merch came alive. And the story was born.
BTS Among Us: 7 Chapters ✓ gore, action, adventure, scifi, angst, death of main characters. This one was so funny for me, I had my friend pick a colour and that was the imposter from the start. I was amazed that no one figured it out in the end. I want to play again soon.
Light it up: 13 Chapters ✓ fluff, comedy, angst, romance, mature, action, adventure. This was inspired by the dynamite trailer, I loved it so much that I began writing, I had no clear direction but as I wrote it started to shape and someone said it was like stranger things and I credited Stranger things cause it did indeed have a similar premise and I don’t want to pretend I came up with something that has already been done.
Love listening: 2 Parts ✓ SMUT, comedy, fluff, angst, romance, mature. This was inspired by a strange video that came up on the internet, I was searching for BTS misheard lyrics and the video I clicked had some funny ones but after that the next suggested video was bts moans and auto play was on and well this fic was born.
Me & the ghost in Number 23: 11 ✓ fluff, comedy, scifi, supernatural, romance, angst, mature, smut, death of main character. This was inspired by many of the ghost text au’s I had read but many of them were like the show oh my ghost where the main ghost character isn’t actually dead just in a coma and I thought the opposite way instead of them waking up, I wanted things to shape the other way. This one was so difficult to write and I cried a lot due to the loneliness Jimin was facing and the mourning from Yoongi.
Hope in the sheets: 4 chapters (so far) fluff, comedy, smut, adventure, slice of life, romance, angst, mature, growing up. This one is a fic that targets my childish desires. I have grown up so much and this fic is a visual representation of that.
Asks: 77 (ongoing) where the bts boys answer the readers questions and concerns.
Reactions: 15 (ongoing)
Prompts: 18 (ongoing)
One shots:
Kisaeng: This was a reverse fic project, the idea that instead of Mulan pretending to be a man and going off to war, it was BTS dressing as women to stay home from war. I loved writing about fictional history.
Steal my Sunshine: This was a summer project. I wanted to write something that felt like a very bad spy movie, like Mellissa Mccarthy and Mr Bean-esque. I formed this one and it made me laugh the whole time writing it.
Blue Side: This was talking to myself about being sad and admitting that I could be sad but I should learn to split the happy and sad into two worlds and limit my time in them both, it was about equal balance and finding the good in the sad and the sad in the good. I don’t know how hard to explain.
Temptation: I had fun writing but it is pure SMUT. not even good SMUT.
Pandemonium: This was really fun. The premise is dark and the ending is left ambiguous, in the original, Namjoon kills the reader but I left it open so you can imagine them continuing their relationship or not.
Mall santa: A fluffy christmas piece. A secret santa I wrote that I felt needed to be soft and quirky and have just all the hallmark moments.
Mad: This one is finished, but I have it published privately at the moment waiting to unveil it as it is well SMUTTY. I don’t know what it is about Taehyung but he is always so dark and I guess that's what people find appealing. I had this idea from a 365prompt and well I had to write it.
One wish: This was a birthday fic that I wrote for a friend. I wanted people to read it on their birthdays or imagine their birthdays and themselves in this position if they made the same wish.
The Check Up: I wrote for this for a friend going through a personal procedure, they were nervous so I took their bias and made something I hoped they could think about while in the procedure and I even explained the steps and what might happen over the next few days hoping the whole thing wouldn’t seem as scary because technically her mind had already been through it when reading the story.
Sparks of the heart: Robots developing human feeling. It was a cute universe and Yoongi’s story will be a series within 2021.
Dance machine 3000
Digital Art
Electronic Tonic
Circuit chef
Random Access Memory
Kookies Trojans and Malware
Feel Better: Another fic written for a author who was sick, I wanted them to endulge in some escapism whilst they were sick.
Music is the spark that sets my soul on fire & Dance is the celebration of the flame: These two were requests that I loved dearly.
Horror movies: Cheesy damsel in distress meets boys will be boys.
I will wait (somesay): This song wouldn’t get out of my head so I had to write it.
Wild Space: When I wanted to write a hybrid AU but I already have a hybrid AU being edited. So hybrid werewolves meets space.
The Bomb: This one is compete and ready to post I had to talk myself out of writing this as a series but I love the story line. I love the end.
Lost Boys: This has been stuck in my head since i had a dream about it and I finally wrote it into the new year. I hope you like it.
Mania: Not my favourite work, love ABO universe I just haven’t got an actually story line so it is on hold.
Incaceration: The story that never was, I really need to get around to this one.
Tagging: @moccahobi I know you wanted to tag me... but I am finished so I am tagging you.

2020 Writing Roundup
Stolen from Rue! This was fun to reflect on!
Everyone is welcome to use this same format if they’d like to do the same!
~~~~~~~
S T A T S
Words written:
A whooping 232,867 - which is more than half of all the words I’ve written on Ao3 in the past seven years LOL. I guess I wrote to keep myself sane this crazy year.
O N G O I N G: S T A R T E D / U P D A T E D
AN UNORTHODOX APPROACH (21,586 words)
First new fic of the year, this is my Shrek AU! I really adore this fantasy AU and it’s fun to explore such a crack concept and treat it seriously. It’s also a Pikelavar AU of sorts.
DEFENDERS OF AURITA (62,538 words)
Only updated my fantasy AU epic with one chapter this year, and I’m actually kind of sad I didn’t work on it more. It’s been hard to find muse for it when it hasn’t gotten nearly as much traction as other projects.
PARADISE LOST (13,013 words)
Another new fic started in June, this is a Zootopia AU! Heavily inspired from Zootopia, Beastars, and The Last of Us, it’s an apocalyptic future involving hybrids, people who have animal traits in order to combat a deadly strain of cancer. Plus I just love fox!Lance and rabbit!Pidge.
SCALING BACK (6,041 words)
New fic started in March, this is one I’ve had stewing on the backburner for quite awhile actually, and decided to start. It’s basically canon but Lance is actually a merman and hiding it from the team. It surprisingly fixes a ton of plot holes and fits with canon narrative.
SHATTER AND TESSELLATE (19,661 words)
This new project kind of took over my life if you couldn’t tell from all the art I’ve cranked out this past year for it. Oddly enough the idea just kind of hit me one day in March. I think Rue’s “worst timelines” got me thinking along those lines and I came up with the idea of Honerva seeing into the future and kidnapping the future paladins and turning them galra to prevent Voltron from defeating the Empire. So it’s a Galra AU but in the worst way possible.
SIX IMPOSSIBLE THINGS (7,243 words)
Another new fic started in August, this Wonderland AU I’ve had notes and ideas for since 2018 or something. And it’s hilarious because I thought of Lance being the Cheshire cat long before Pike existed. Thanks to lots of brainstorming on Discord I’ve figured out a lot more worldbuilding for this AU and I can’t wait to expound on it.
SLIDING LEFT MAKES MR. RIGHT (2,788 words)
Crack Tinder AU which says I posted in 2020 but I think I wrote it in November/December of 2019. This is a oneshot and it’s taking me forever to finish because it’s hard for me to write short things lol.
THE VACANT ETHER (31,121 words)
This is from the Stories in the Dark bang back in October 2019 and I’m still working to finish it. Post s8, horror, cosmic Reaper AU. This is a favorite AU of mine because of how nicely it fixes and explains all the plot holes of s8.
WHAT TIDES MAY BRING (20,704 words)
The Mer AU that Rue and I started writing last year! I really adore this AU and the Plance family feels it has, and sadly I’ve been slacking on my end with writing the next chapter but I hope to get more content in before MerMay this year.
WHERE SAPPHIRE ROSES GROW (31,101 words)
I wrote a lot this year for my Beauty and the Beast AU. I’m quite pleased I finally got to the part where Lance learns Pidge is a girl because that’s when things start moving into motion (and obviously the romance starts developing, but still not for awhile yet because I’m a sucker for slow burns).
WHERE THE SUN MEETS THE OCEAN (8,620 words)
I barely touched my Atlantis AU this year. This is another AU that doesn’t get as much love so it’s hard to find muse for it at times.
R E F L E C T I O N S
Best title
I am really fond of Shatter and Tessellate. Not only does it sound pretty and gives great imagery but it’s symbolic of how the paladins are broken and put back together.
Worst title
Probably Paradise Lost. It’s unoriginal (I stole it from the book by John Milton) though it fits the themes of the fic. But I also couldn’t think of anything better and I do find it funny that shortened it becomes PL which is like Pidge/Lance.
Best/worst last line
Best: from Where Sapphire Roses Grow:
She opened her eyes to see Lance looking up at her with his captivating irises as brilliant a blue as the very sapphire rose that cursed him, eyes that were still human.
“I swear to you Lance… I will figure out a way to break your curse.”
Worst: from Paradise Lost:
“Please…” she says in a muffled voice between sobs. “I can't - I can't do this alone."
“You won't have to,” he promises softly as he holds her close. “I'm here. I'm right here..."
Looking back, did you write more fics than you thought you would this year, less than you thought, or about what you predicted?
I wrote uhhh.... way more. Than I thought possible considering all the stress that happened this year. I started six new fics and progressed a ton in others.
What’s your favorite story this year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you the happiest.
This is a hard one to choose... but based on the content I covered this year for the fic as opposed to the fic itself, I’d have to say Where Sapphire Roses Grow. It’s so fun writing feral Lance and him protecting Pidge from the wolves was one of my favorite scenes to write this year.
Okay, NOW your most popular story.
By a freaking landslide, Shatter and Tessellate. This really caught me off guard - I never thought this fic would be so popular, especially considering it starts out as a kid fic of sorts (paladins are all early teens at first) and most people don’t like kid fics. It’s also quite dark and highkey horror? So I’m shocked it’s so well loved.
Story most underappreciated by the universe?
By far The Vacant Ether. I thought it would gain a lot more traction considering everyone and their dog wants a s8 fix it fic, but then again TVE covers really dark topics and is technically a horror fic. So I shouldn’t be surprised it isn’t for everyone. But I am really happy with how it has turned out, even if less people read it.
Story that could have been better?
All of them Hmm. I feel like Scaling Back could have been more imaginative, considering the second chapter mostly follows the events of a canon episode with little divergence.
Sexiest story?
None of them have really gotten to that point yet... though I have been working on some future steamy scenes for some fics. If I had to pick one though probably Where the Sun Meets the Ocean because Pidge ogles Lance in that one.
Saddest story?
Yikes this is a hard one. I think I have to say Shatter and Tessellate, because not only does that one cover death and kidnapping, but metamorphis and body horror. And it’s all the more sadder because they’re just kids.
Most fun?
I think the one most fun to write is Where Sapphire Roses Grow. I love the time period, I love monster!Lance, I love Pidge and Lance bickering, there’s just so many good points to it. Plus BatB is a classic I loved and grew up with as a kid so it’s really fun to write out the themes I love.
Story with single sweetest moment?
I think Lance comforting Katie in Shatter and Tessellate when she asks him to call her by Pidge from now on fits this one. Lance and Pidge have a lot of little moments like this in this fic but this one in particular is very tender.
“Pidge is cute,” he finally says as he nervously rubs his wrist. “Reminds me of Pokemon.”
She makes a small sound which he thinks is an attempt at a laugh and turns her head to face him, tucking her hair behind her ear. “That’s where Matt got it from, actually.”
He smiles at her. “Is Matt your brother?”
She nods. “I’ve always loved owls, but I had a hard time saying it when I was learning how to talk. I watched Matt play enough video games that I could say ‘Pidgey’ though, and so I started calling any owl I saw as Pidgey. At some point the nickname Pidge stuck.”
Hardest story to write?
Easily The Vacant Ether. It covers a lot of heavy and dark topics and it’s hard to really nail the horror vibe sometimes. But also Sliding Left Makes Mr. Right solely because I can’t write short one-shots to save my life LOL.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Not really? Aside from just... cranking out a ton. I suppose starting 6 new fics can count as taking a risk. Keeping up with all my projects is also a project but I somehow manage to do it.
Proudest Achievement:
I think Shatter and Tessellate reaching so many kudos and hits. I seriously was not expecting that.
What are your fic writing goals for next year?
Just keep writing I guess. I do have two ambitious plans, to finish Not All Pain Heals, my Teen Wolf fic that is long overdue to be finished, as well as The Vacant Ether which is the fic I have planned out the most and would be easiest to finish.
Lily: I can’t believe they actually went through with it, honestly.
Alice: I know, it’s just stupid.
Dorcas: the article said they were schoolkids.
Dorcas: they’re literally our ages, okay?
Lily: i get what you mean, but it’s a little much, don’t you think?
Lily: I mean, I’d expect some backlash if i put whipped cream all over the store’s windows.
Alice: Where’d they even get that much whipped cream from?
Alice: That shit’d cost a fortune.
Alice: I mean, have you seen the size of the freakin shop?
Lily: Ik, it’s a waste of time, money and food.
Remus slowly scrolled through the chats from earlier that evening.
He realy had no idea why the store had a night shift- well, he did; technically it was a 24 hour shop- but other than the occasional contraceptive, no one ever came anywhere beyond eleven.
Lily had tried to convince him not to take the shift. She told him that they had an important class at seven, but he refused skip the shift.
The truth was, he really wanted to buy a hardcover version of Wuthering heights, but it was way beyond the pathetic amount of pocket money he had, and his parents would rather buy the store he was working in than yet another book.
So here he was, running on two cups of coffee, wearing the store’s shirt, and scrolling through his phone in the flickering lights.
The store was relatively empty.
Except for the dishevelled stranger who’d suddenly rushed in, hair flying all around him.
He looked around frantically, before locking eyes with Remus, and promptly stalking towards him.
Remus’s heart sped up, and fear pulsed through his veins, as the man neared him with an intense gaze. But as the man came close, the fierce look in his eyes seemed more weary, and shadows hung under them.
But damn, this man was hot.
He looked no older than Remus himself, with wild, black hair- shoulder length- that wildly flailed around his face. He had black studs on his ears, and sharp cheekbones. Those eyes, however, were a whole new thing. They were hypnotic, and Remus couldn’t bring himself to look away.
There was something familiar about him, though Remus couldn’t put his finger on it.
“How- how can I help you? Remus hoped he didn’t notice the stutter.
“Hi, d’you have thermocol and citric acid?”
“What?”
The man didn’t seem to hear him, as his gaze lingered for a second or two- though it felt like hours- before he shook out of it. His focused expression dropped, and he looked much more relaxed.
“Oh- chemistry project. I- uh- was busy earlier, and this was only shop open near me. Yeah- don’t ask me what old sluggy expects us to do.”
“Sluggy?”
“Slughorn. Can’t blame him for wanting us to refer to him by his first name,” said Sirius, imitating him for the last part.
“Poor bloke must hate his parents.”
“Yeah,” said Sirius with a chuckle.
Remus noticed the man’s eyes slip to his lips unconsciously, and blushed faintly. He didn’t seem to notice, and his gaze lingered for a second again, before he Remus waved a hand in front of his eyes.
“S- sorry- I really need sleep. Anyway- yeah- citric acid and thermocol?”
“Oh,” Remus stretched out his hand behind him before continuing. “I think if you searched there, you might find the thermocol. It’s in the ‘art and crafts’ section.”
“Thanks.”
And with that, the man rushed back to the ‘arts and crafts’ section.
Remus smirked after the man, feeling butterflies he didn’t realised existed fade away.
He switched on his phone, and swiped to their group chat.
That’s when it hit him.
The boys in the article. Who put whipped cream all over the roof. Of the store. This hot man was one of them.
Remus started chuckling to himself, earning him a weird look from the man who’d just appeared with a huge slab of thermocol.
“What’s so funny?”
“Looked at my future,” mumbled Remus earning a dry chuckle from the man. “Anyway, the citric acid is most probably at the pharmacy.”
“Thanks.”
As Remus watched the man jog off, he escaped the till he was standing at, quickly making his way to the refrigerated section. Skimming over it, he found what he was looking for, and quickly made his way back at the till.
Not a moment or two later, the man came from the pharmacy with a bottle of citric acid and a hairbrush.
“Highly doubt ‘Sluggy’ wants neat hair as a part of his experiment,” mused Remus.
“Oh, don’t you know? Taking care of your hair is punk rock, no matter what James says.”
“I’m going to assume that James is your partner in crime.”
The man let out a chuckle, before it fell from his face in confusion.
Remus produced a bottle of whipped cream from below the till, earning him a loud bark of laughter, that even drew a grin from Remus himself.
“Has the whole world heard about it at this point?”
“Nah, Lily’s just way too obsessed with the headlines.”
“Oh my god.” Sirius stopped dead in his tracks, the grin still painted on his face. “Isn’t Lily the part time bartender- redhead?”
“Yeah? How did you know?”
“James is the bloke with messy hair, glasses, and heart-eyes for her.”
“That’s James? She’s been mooning for him forever now!”
“You’re kidding. James would start singing.”
“Really not. I’ve seen her taking the till whenever he comes in.”
“Oh no, poor girl. She could do better than James.”
“Sure she could, that’s what I keep telling her. But no, she’s stuck on him.”
“That’s really the saddest thing I’ve heard all day, and believe me when I say this has been a strange day.”
Just then, the man’s phone started ringing. He mouthed “sorry, one sec,” before picking it up.
It was then that Remus realised.
He was head over heels for the man.
And he didn’t even know the man’s bloody name.
As the man put the phone back in the pockets of his jeans, Remus resisted the urge to pull him over the counter and do things he’d be fired for.
“What’s your name?”
“Sirius. Sirius Black.”
“The star?”
“Why thank you, I am a star,” said Sirius coyly, before continuing. “Yeah, like the star. My biological parents were into the whole star thing, I mean, my brother was called Regulus.”
Remus was confused by the word biological, but decided not to press further.
“Anyway,” Sirius said. “As nice as this is, I need to go now.”
“Oh, right.”
Remus collected the items, and scanned the barcode. It was a robotic process really, one he could do in his sleep. He collected the bill, and held his hand out for the cash, stuffing it in the counter.
“D’you want the receipt?”
“Yeah, sure.”
Remus collected the bill, before an idea struck him. As Sirius fumbled with the items, trying to stuff them in a plastic bag, Remus found a pen, and scribbled down his number onto the bill.
“Here you go,” he said, holding it out and turning around to hide a grin.
It was barely a few moments after he’d left the building, that Remus felt his phone vibrate. He opened it, grinned widely as he saw the notification.
(501) 961-806: never thanked you for the free whipped cream.
My First Fashion Week Has Been Imperfect and Strangely Life-Affirming
http://fashion-trendin.com/my-first-fashion-week-has-been-imperfect-and-strangely-life-affirming/
My First Fashion Week Has Been Imperfect and Strangely Life-Affirming
This is my very first fashion week! I’m very excited and also nervous and oh my god what will I wear I hope I don’t fall over at some point. I love fashion as something to think about and observe in others, but I feel I’m very firmly not a “fashion person,” if that makes sense? I sort of feel like a band nerd at a jock party, but I have no doubt this week will be fun (if I don’t fall). This is also my first fashion week as a managing editor, so while we’ve had meetings and google docs and emails galore, 90% of my anxiety comes from a deep need to not mess this up. Below, a recording of my first few days — let me know whether you think I succeeded.
Thursday
10 a.m.
I’m working from home today and have knocked out the work-from-home essentials: brush your teeth, wash your face, put on a bra and make a huge pot of coffee. I spend most of the morning doing normal non-fashion week things.
2 p.m
I make one of those weird work-from-home lunches that’s just a bowl of stuff from your fridge.
6:30 p.m.
I sign off to get ready for the DapperQ show at the Brooklyn Museum.
7 p.m.
I decide to walk because it’s finally not a million degrees out and immediately get rained on. I regret nothing as it is important to see the outside world for at least 20 minute on a work-from-home day.
7:30 p.m.
I meet up with my friend Naima and head in. It’s a full-on scene. Technically this is my very first fashion show, but it’s on what feels like my home turf. The general public can and is encouraged to buy tickets so it’s more of an event than anything else. There are pop-up boutiques, a gif booth, the world’s longest bar line and a station to get all of your measurements taken.
8:10 p.m.
The show starts and it’s actually 10 different labels showing: A/C Space, Audio Helkuik, Jag & Co, Kris Harring Apparel Group, Nicole Wilson, SALT, Stuzo clothing, The Phluid Project, TomboyX + Squirrel Vs. Coyote, and THÚY Custom Clothier. It’s a mix of incredibly tailored suits for all types of bodies and all types of gender expressions, flowy linen tunics and pants that feel like tropical menocore, ’90s inspired rave wear and a truly great bike short look. The models that are sent down the runway are all races, ages, sizes and orientations.
9:15 p.m.
That was a very long show, I fell in love at least three times and now I need to buy a suit. First fashion show down!
Friday
10:30 a.m.
I get into the office late because the Q was majorly delayed this morning and it was physically impossible to get on the first one that came. Haley, Simedar and I spend five minutes talking about how dumb New York is as an idea. Someone points out there’s a nutella cookie on the counter and I decide to treat my emotional wounds with too much sugar.
11 a.m.
The office is a ghost town, between people dashing in and out for shows, working remotely and squeezing in end-of-summer vacations. I get a lot of the task-based stuff done (pay freelancers, update our project management software, send some strongly worded emails). I think/hope we prepared well for fashion week this year. We had two meetings to try to get ahead of everything but also decided that this year everyone will be flexible within reason. There’s no need to stay up till midnight working on a post.
1 p.m.
Amelia turns around her Tory Burch post with lightning speed, Edith finds the photos and we turn it live! Nothing like the rush of timely content!!!
5 p.m.
Maybe it’s the sugar, maybe it’s the fashion week adrenaline, but it is 5 o’clock and we have lost our minds. We get on the topic of tattooing celebrities on our thighs, Haley has busted out her weird animal toys and I keep changing my hair. I’m going to Chromat in a few and feel like this is the day to just go for a fulllllll look. I’m wearing a purple jump suit and more makeup and jewelry than I ever do, but changing from a high bun to a messy low ponytail feels like a true leap into a fashion-forward existence. Haley loans me her incredible white coat and while every part of my always-underdressed soul is screaming for me to take it off, a small voice says, it’s fashion week.
5:50 p.m.
Eliz and I arrive at the Chromat show after a quick walk (that girl can walk). There’s a lot of street style hullabaloo and when a nice guy asks to take my photo I say YES. Fashion week has turned me into a whole new woman!! It was a weird process but whatever, I’m an old pro by the time we meet up with Simon and he snaps my photo for this here diary. We’re in line for about 30 minutes but it goes quickly because there is just so much to see, so many people to watch.
6:20 p.m.
After a somewhat confusing line situation and an elevator ride that set off my anxiety (made an iPhone note: “Play about fashion people stuck in an elevator???” I don’t think it’s a hit), we get into the space. In the rush to find our seats I see one Whoopi Goldberg and feel beyond blessed.
6:50 p.m.
The show is over and it was so fun! Once again we were blessed with a gorgeous mix of models including Ericka Hart, whose hair I’m copying immediately. Their swimsuits and sunglasses and beads almost made me sad that summer is over, but I now have some full looks to dream about for the next 10 months or so.
7:15 p.m.
Back in the office to send the final end-of-day editorial email and check in on some things before running off to surprise my friend who just got engaged!! Feeling very happy and grateful for this day.
Saturday
10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Very chill morning, made some breakfast, did some reading, wrote for myself, went to the gym, ate a second breakfast, took a shower and put my “look” together.
1-2 p.m.
Getting ready for the Christian Siriano show and am VERY excited. I got to talk to him ever-so-briefly earlier this year and love not only the stuff that he makes but the people he casts. Also hoping to see my tall sister Leslie Jones.
Feeling a bit of an emotional hangover from pushing myself outside of my comfort zone (amazing what the right coat can do), so I just threw on the Levi’s from this story, a black turtleneck and some dad sneakers. Feeling very much in my comfort zone, I left, giving myself 20 more minutes than Google maps told me I needed because of the raggedy-ass MTA.
2:15 p.m.
The Q isn’t coming for 17 minutes. The B isn’t running at all. I remember how much fun I had in Baltimore earlier this year and briefly imagine what Baltimore Nora is doing right at this very moment.
2:32 p.m.
The train is beyond crowded but I push myself on because I can’t be late. I hope that all of my I’ll-wait-for-the-next-one karma has been stored up for this very moment. Texting with Haley and Em to let them know I’ll be late-late. Because, oh, guess what? This late-ass Q is now running local instead of express. A 3-year-old-girl is pummeling her older brother while their dad plays a phone game. Her brother pushes her and she falls on my shoes, the dad finally looks up. I double check that I’ve registered to vote.
4:17 p.m.
I finally meet Emily outside in line. We have standing tickets and Haley has a seat so she already went in. We chat, see Tiffany Hadish walk in (she ready, I mumble enthusiastically to myself) and I think Carmen Electra? It is raining and the line is outside.
4:23 p.m.
No room at the inn! Someone tells one person at the front of the line that we all have to go home and it quickly becomes the world’s saddest/grouchiest game of telephone. Em and I are both a little bummed and decide to just head home rather than wait to see people exit. I get back on the Q train, it is running as it should.
I’m a little annoyed and frustrated and the high of last night’s New York magic has worn off. The afternoon was stressful, challenging, disappointing and no one likes to feel like they’re being left out. It felt like what I was nervous would happen (“mmm you’re not cool!”) happened and I know it’s not personal and I know it’s not an actual big deal but I’m just…over it.
5:20 p.m.
Grab some groceries on the walk home, come back to send a few emails, update a few headlines and check in on everyone else. My ticket for Pyer Moss is standing also and I’m feeling a little Eeyore-ish and think about skipping it. My friend Morgan’s birthday is tonight and so is my friend Michelle’s goodbye and I could use the extra energy/hours. But I ultimately decide against ditching. So I eat too much cheese, sigh and put on my shoes, and head out the door. Feel free to bookmark that as an inspirational quote.
6:30 p.m.
The show is in Brooklyn at the Weeksville Heritage Center so I splurge on a Lyft since it’s kind of close. I get there and just like that, I’m back in it. Roughly 98% of the people outside are black and there are some fantastic outfits. I bump into my new pal Simon who was smart enough to wear a rain poncho. We wait in line for a bit which gives me ample time to covet the Pyer Moss sweatshirts the staff and crew are wearing. There are also staff members with shirts that say “If You’re Just Hearing About Pyer Moss We Forgive You.” I’ll take two. I don’t know anyone but it’s fine, because I’m just happy to be there.
7 p.m.
I walk into the space and it’s amazing. It is full on raining so it’s a bit of a bummer that it’s outside but very much worth it. I wander over to the back where the historic houses are. Which, I feel like I should explain something here: I LOVE historic homes and historic house tours. Like 80% of my personality is loving historic homes. These particular historic homes are the Hunterfly Road Houses , built at the height of Weeksville’s time as a thriving free black community in the 19th and early 20th century. Okay. Back to fashion. Shaun Ross is here! I think MJ Rodriguez is here too! Karruche is for sure here!
7:15 p.m.
A jazz quartet walks out. They’re all dressed in white and posted up to the side of the houses: I’m about to witness some black excellence, I think to myself. I’m standing by the stage manager and hear her say “the choir is coming out now” into a headset. Which, okay, sorry to keep doing this — I LOVE choirs, and while we’re here on this historic black site about to watch a black designer send black models down the runway while a jazz quartet plays, I watch this choir come out and think about how much being in choir helped shaped my identity and community and realize that, at this moment, it feels a bit like a community, and I get in my feelings, just a little bit. What would it have been like to see this future for myself? What is it like to grow up now with all these infinite ways to be black and successful?
8ish p.m.
The show is over and it was incredible. Yellow pleather overalls, a yellow mesh dress that I would not be surprised to see on MR sometime in the future, gorgeous pleated pants, amazing graphic prints and a gospel choir that swag surf-ed. I would see a look and think of a black actor it would be perfect for, or a friend (I’m matchmaking Crystal and those pleather overalls for sure). It just felt special.
It’s been a rough couple of news days, so standing in that space in awe of all that we do and all that we create was the first time I truly felt what it means for fashion to transcend clothing or magazines or trends. To be at the heart of how fashion can be the start of a conversation or even a feeling.
There was a cookout, with Hennesy, duh, but I decided to leave on a high note. I turned around to look at the Hunterfly Houses all lit up as an amazing 90s R&B mix floated out from the party and I remember why I love New York. That all parts of myself are given a place to thrive, to be seen. That in three days you can see different pieces of what matter to you reflected back in all of the crazy glory of the city at its most insane. I’m signing off to celebrate a friend and say goodbye to another, to give thanks for this city and the people that fill it.
Meet the Shapies: Lefteri Koutsoulidakis
Meet the Shapies introduces the people behind the 3D printing processes that bring your favorite products to life. This time, get to know Lefteri Koutsoulidakis, a senior customer service agent in New York who makes answering all your 3D printing queries look easy. Read on for a taste of Lefteri’s side hustles and stellar sense of humor.
Where is your hometown? Astoria, the mini-Greece of Queens, New York.
How long have you been with Shapeways?
This many years.
How long have you been 3D printing? I work in Customer Service so I technically am not, myself, printing. But I’ve been designing models and getting them 3D printing for two years now. My first experience with 3D printing was with Shapeways. Prior to joining, I attended Full Sail University to study Game Art, and learned how to model using Maya. I’ve recently started messing around with scanned models and correcting them in ZBrush.
What is your favorite 3D printed object ever? Forever ever? Hmm..
I can’t honestly pick a favorite. I will say that my favorite types are generally models with moving parts. It’s amazing that you can get these interlocking parts which normally would require assembly, and they just come out like that, in tact, and moveable.
Speaking of, I just ordered this magnificent beast right here:
Animaris Geneticus Bellus by Theo Jansen
If you could 3D print something in any material, currently possible or not, what would you pick and why? A personalized fully-functional customizable pair of fingerless gauntlets that had the ability to act as a phone, to show images/video on their surface and also project onto a wall. I would be able to take photos and video with them and also 3d scan people and objects. Since you said “possible or not”, I’ll also throw in thrusters, for some flight action. There would be temperature control both internally and externally, so I could warm my hands up in the winter, or heat food without burning myself. I could even use them to produce and record music (microphone, audio interface, midi controller, speakers, all in one) The possibilities are endless.
In general, I would love to be able to design and print a model in multiple materials. It would have all the internal wiring and various parts needed for it to come out of the printer fully functional, no assembly required.
Multi-material printing isn’t quite there yet, but it’s on its way:
How do you spend your time when you’re not bringing our community’s 3D printed vision to life? I run an Entertainment company called PREP Sound (www.prepsound.com) and am currently working with my business partner on another venture called Eventful Moments http://ift.tt/2yu0fNF, which will offer services centered around events; weddings, ceremonies, birthdays, etc. We plan to incorporate Shapeways by offering 3D scans and personalized merchandise through both companies.
After having been tied up with a few projects I’m finally getting time to start work on my own music, work on some designs I’d like to print, ride my bicycle (cautiously) through New York, and finally get to start writing a book called The Empathy Virus.
I also think it’s time I get back into playing basketball. Somewhere in between all that, I will find time to sleep and watch some of the great shows that are out there right now (shoutout to Doctor Who, The Walking Dead, and Game of Thrones).
What’s the most exciting thing you’ve learned about 3D printing in your time at Shapeways? The various processes themselves are really interesting. But I think the most exciting thing I’ve learned about 3D Printing is its reach and the various applications it is used for. Being in Customer Service has allowed me to interact with a wide variety of community members who have been using our services for all these different purposes.
The enthusiasm and curiosity that comes from all corners of the world is inspiring and infectious, so I find myself constantly falling back in love with 3D printing, and never coming close to falling out.
The fact that people can upload their ideas to our marketplace and make substantial income from the sale of their products is also super exciting. I love that it’s possible for shoppers to reach out directly to these designers, discuss the design, and possibly get a customized altered version. Think of all the red tape you would have to go through to get something like that going with traditional manufacturing.
What’s on your work playlist? It’s a mix. From Tupac to Tool to Tori Amos to the Temptations (as well as artists whose names don’t start with “T”). I particularly like 90s, 80s, and 60s music (no offense 70s, you were definitely cool too. Honorable mention).
I have been getting back into Greek music, listening a lot to Giannis Parios, Dimitris MItropanos and just a lot of old school Greek songs. I’m really excited about this new artist, Marina Satti and really dig her latest video:
youtube
If you started your own Shapeways shop, what would you sell? For PREP Sound and Eventful moments we plan to open shops offering customizable pendants, jewelry, scans, signs for events and basically anything customizable that would appeal to musicians or to people planning a special event.
I’d also like to eventually start coming up with original characters and making those available on my own separate shop.
In a perfect world, what is the trajectory of 3D printing? What I envision and hope for is a world where you can go online and download the necessary files for various products including devices, modify them any way you like, and get them printed, in multiple materials, within a day.
And then an environment-friendly drone brings it over to you along with some tacos, drops them off, high fives you, says “wow those tacos sure smell amazing, enjoy!”. It then looks down at the floor, frowning, turns to leave but you stop it and say “No, dude, where are you going?! Please, sit down and eat some tacos with me.”
And then you’re just sitting there, marveling at the device you designed and just got printed, while you and your new drone buddy enjoy some sweet tacos.
Give us some words to live by! “The saddest thing in life is wasted talent. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don’t do the right thing, nothing happens. But when you do right, good things happen”.
– Robert DeNiro said this in “A Bronx Tale” written by Chazz Palminteri.
From one angle it just seems so foreboding and final. But it also feels inspiring, like an encouraging push that’s reminding us, “hey, this is what you should be focusing on, don’t take this for granted, you have something special inside of you and it’s going to be a real shame if you don’t share it with the world.”
We’re the guardians and caretakers of our own talent, the ones most responsible for what happens to it. It’s up to us whether that talent stays locked up, unused, collecting dust, or is nourished and given a chance to possibly touch the world.
