alexei savrasov -- "the rooks have returned" (1871)
"nature is always breathing, always singing, and the song it sings is full of majesty. contemplating nature is the highest pleasure" … alexei savrasov
"the rooks were sailing about the cathedral towers; and the towers themselves, overlooking many a long unaltered mile of the rich country and its pleasant streams, were cutting the bright morning air, as if there were no such thing as change on earth. yet the bells, when they sounded, told me sorrowfully of change in everything" … david copperfield
"[this] charming painting itself is known to every russian schoolchild" … vladimir petrov
"this sad message of 'change' is finally dawning on every american citizen" … al janik

do you ever think about how lucanis keeps losing and losing and losing — his entire life? losing his parents, losing his childhood because of the crow training, losing his freedom, his sleep, and one year of his life due to imprisonment. then the maker smiles upon him, and he's discovering something good (rook, the veilguard team, purpose), acquiring something back (his family, his life, his freedom, his job, his city), finding some peace in mundane things (coffee, cooking, taking care of others). it feels like the scales are finally moving, balancing — only for him to lose again. he loses caterina, he can lose his city to blight, he loses at weisshaupt, he loses grip on himself (thanks to spite), he loses control — he loses himself, piece by piece. rook can help lighten the load on his chest (thanks to spite), he gets caterina back, and breathing feels a little bit easier. but loss is not done with him. he loses illario, and it feels like losing a limb, a large piece of himself violently torn away. he's visibly shaken, but no one truly knows what it takes to string the assorted pieces of himself together and keep functioning. and then loss deals what seems like the final blow: some of his friends are dead or lost, and rook is gone, too. he failed; he only knows death, doesn't he? life only takes, and takes, and takes, giving only to tease and take it back. at that moment, he's falling apart completely — until they find rook, and there's a sliver of hope once again. the scales are moving, the team wins, they eventually go back to their lives — and that's when he realizes that the final blow is the life as the first talon.
#it's written with romanced lucanis in mind but i felt like it's important to mention that he can lose treviso too#also it's easy to water it down to some sort of karmic explanation: he dealt death and that's what he gets in return#but i think it's a completely wrong and even harmful take#his story could have illustrated perfectly the cruel and abusive system that crows are;#how it breaks people; abuses them for profit and (usually) brings out the worst in them (illario)#and they lose eventually — themselves; if not power#and even if you manage to stay human and sympathetic you keep losing as well because you're trapped in this never-ending cycle of violence-#--and power play; and that would tie perfectly with zevran's story they tried to play out offscreen in the previous games#it would have been so much more meaningful and impactful than uhhh whatever they did in the game 🙃#that would give illario so much more depth as well#also i don't believe lucanis wasn't shaken after the whole illario ordeal (i think it wasn't shown in the game at all????)#like. illario is/was the closest person to him. he spent so much time with him. and yet nothing???#idc about that stupid hero of veilguard badge gimme the brothers' agony!!!!#lucanis dellamorte#illario dellamorte#rook#dragon age the veilguard#dav#dav spoilers#**meta#**writing#UH i love them both so much 😭#someone needs to do the crows rewrites.........#not me obv im not capable but i'd love to read someone's version#anyway.... what do you think.... tell me...... talk to me about the miserable brothers......

do you ever think about how in the literal very first scene with Rebecca, we learn that Unit Bravo had no idea she even had a kid
she chose UB and The Agency over the detective so consistently, so frequently, that her team didn't even consider that she had some kind of life outside of them, with someone waiting for her at home

thinkin' about Spite being, true to form, spiteful about Lucanis neglecting their deal in ways that are petty and stupid. He takes over for the night? Consider:
Lucanis' favorite cup goes missing bc Spite hid it
His grocery lists have items randomly redacted
All of Lucanis' similarly sized daggers are suddenly crammed into the wrong sheathes. Thanks Spite :)
Of the spices he uses most, Spite picks one and dumps out just enough that Lucanis will come up short next time he needs it
He reorganizes the pantry by color instead of whatever the fuck system Lucanis and Bellara painstakingly decided on
He carves those geometric lines from the logbook into the dining room table with Lucanis' most expensive knife
Spite takes a piece of bread from the kitchen to eat in their cot bc Lucanis thinks eating in bed is gross and he'll know Spite did it when he sees the crumbs
Maybe he goes after Davrin once or twice with pebbles meant for his shoes, but it never works out bc while Spite’s piloting the body of a Crow, he doesn’t quite know how to use it like one

Rook: Look at that splendidly ornate comb! Ahh! Magnifiqué! Trés, trés bien!! I--
Exhausted!Yuu: Oh my god, here we go again. Another TED talk today? You've already given 7.
Rook:..I beg your pardon?
Exhausted!Yuu: Everytime you open your mouth I get the urge to say, 'welcome to the comedy club!'.
Rook: Excuse-moi--
Exhausted!Yuu: I'm sorry but be glad you're not part of my world because there's a role in a show 25 years ago that's calling your name. I hope you like being Phoebe Buffay's ex, because you've been doing some damn good impressions since I got here.
Rook:...
Exhausted!Yuu: That's what I thought.

I just *clenches fist with tears in my eyes* love the grand necropolis so much
#just saw the relevant art book pages and like. is there a single sentence said about that place that doesn't slap severely#no! it all rocks out of this world it's quite simply Just That Good. if it has a ground floor no one alive has ever seen it....#an inverse tower of babel they go looking for knowledge in the grave instead of the heavens. hello. for god's sake hello#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#the grand necropolis#as a character note I really like that they emphasize that the mortalitasi KNOW how they're perceived outside of nevarra#and know at least partially how to appear less uh. how they actually are to make the situation more comfortable for outsiders#rook 'code switch champion' ingellvar makes even more sense the deeper you get into the lore haha#this is such good timing b/c I'm closing in rapidly on rye going home for the first time in a year in my replay#and what better time to contemplate the home that is a house of many mansions and that cannot be home anymore#the tower of babel the eden of childhood. it will never change but you have. you can't belong there in life as you once did#you can't go back as you were and you don't know yet that that's alright.#you'll have to bury many versions of yourself until the final day. tend to those graves and let new things grow between them#the necropolis will wait for you. it'll be there to welcome you home in the end no matter what.#it's. just the good stuff is the thing#also can I just say that curio and keepsake asking you if you've returned (...perhaps to stay (i.e. in death)...?) is. so so tender#especially as ingellvar#the fact that the spirits clearly love the watchers *back* in their fashion is sssssssssssssoooooooo.... help#also very funny when rook follows proper watcher protocol with them and they're like 🥰ah so good to see a young watcher#who remembers the importance of *manners*🥰🥰🥰 all hope is not lost. the mourn watch truly is rook's family 2 electric boogaloo

gods, do I try to dig up any info on the city of Salle in Antiva or do I just make up a bunch of shit and hope no one else tries to fact check me
#did I comb through 8 Little Talons because I had a vague memory of Viago mentioning returning home to a specific city?#yeah yeah I did and he said Salle which on a map that I found of Antiva marks it as a (seemingly) port city south of Treviso#so the de Riva House is not from nor stationed in Treviso and Viago sure is just There#which does make some sense with how he treats Rook#I can't imagine he moved his House to Treviso to deal with the invasion#it'd leave his own city weaker and in danger from it's own invasion or another House trying to oust him#likely only brought enough Crows to form a menacing deterrent to the Crows in Treviso and for his own personal use as agents#and then Rook his protege his annoying half sibling half child who he seems to rely on A Lot in the game#which can either be blamed on Game Mechanics#or! Rook is one of Viago's best Crows and agents despite the absolute chaos goblin that they are#maybe he only brought a handful of people because Rook was supposed to be enough#and then he has to send them away because they fucked up and the Talons want blood at the worst time#it does make me wonder who he left in charge in Salle#is Rook being groomed to take his place or does he have someone else#someone younger but with potential#it compels me#anyways I'm drowning Salle in flowers and no one can stop me (well maybe one google search can but it's almost 3am and I ain't doing that)#really the snag is simply how much older is Viago than Rook and I settled on ~10 year difference give or take#so making Rook the next Talon is nonsense lmao#for my canon! just for me I wanted Renn to be in a similar age range as Lucanis because it squicks me otherwise#I'm chipping away at the events right before the game's opening in the fic and want Renn to be homesick for Salle and not Treviso#and then got too in the weeds about it all lmao as usual#DAV Posting

Well, on the upside, Veilguard’s absolutely horrid writing and utter lack of meaningful roleplay mechanics made me appreciate Inquisition’s already watered-down writing and roleplay mechanics.
#Emmrich’s pretty much the only decent companion but my god.#This game feels like a daycare simulator.#No option but to be nice to and validate everyone even when they’re being objectively awful themselves (looking at Taash in particular)#The stakes should feel high but instead I just feel like I’m babysitting toddlers#And normally I’m a completionist who loves doing all the quests but the game actively forces you into it#You HAVE to recruit all the companions; you HAVE to baby and validate them all; you HAVE to complete all their quests#No option to even mention the supposed Dire Stakes of the universe.#The game treats you like you’re seven and over-explains everything to you. The maps are terrible even if they look good.#The voice acting for a few companions is… questionable.#For a game we waited ten years for it feels like someone’s rough/unfinished first draft.#And again no truly meaningful roleplay choices or actions.#The game just forces you to be nice to everyone. Rook feels like an inveterate spectator and an invertebrate to boot. Utterly spineless.#Every time we see a returning companion I feel like Hadvar: ‘Who… are you?’#Because they act nothing like their previously established personalities & it’s like Veilguard goes out of its way to ignore previous games#The head writer’s self-insert is painfully obvious and atrociously-written in particular#You can only be a Good Nice Guy#Maybe sometimes a Stern Nice Guy and very occasionally a Nice Guy Who Thinks He’s Funny But Isn’t#Just! My god.#I want to return the game. For the first time ever in my life.#So disappointed.#text#chey.txt

Rook does in fact have a mabari, it's just that Rook is a member of the Mourn Watch so her mabari is bones and seeing how everyone is reacting to Manfred, the absolute sweetheart, she just decided to leave her bone dog at home until she brings it back to the lighthouse one day and most everyone gets real freaked out by how she spoils and babies the creepy skeleton dog.

My thoughts:
Combat reminds me of playing da2 on console. I don't hate it, but after playing so many crpgs its going to take some adjustment.
Rook seems to talk a lot without player input. As long as Rook has more personality this isnt necessarily a bad thing. I liked when they did this with Hawke bc of how much personality they had, the inquisitor on the other hand was done very blandly. We'll see how they do with Rook.
Having the ritual take place at the beginning is very cool. I like that its bc we distracted Solas that the Gods are released. Oops! I know why they used Varric, but I think a lot of people are going to think it feels weird for their Inquisitor to not be there for this moment. They're going to need to invent a strong reason why they were absent.
Despite how much I liked what I saw, the gameplay reveal has tempered my hype a little bit. It reminded me direction Bioware has been taking the series gameplay wise is the opposite direction of the type of games i like now. Regardless, as long as the story and characters are strong I'm sure I'll play the hell out of this game.
