Unsaid (Ethan x MC)
Book: Open Heart Book 2 Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x f!MC  (Dr. Lilac Allende) Word count: 706 Summary: The last time they see each other before he leaves to Brazil
Prompt: #21. “Stop worrying about you? Stop worrying about you?! I can barely stop thinking of you!”
Tumblr media
Another explosion of laughter and cheers reached him at his usual place at the bar. For a slow night at Donahue's, the amount of celebration that particular group was doing seemed almost out of place. Then again, she was in the middle of it, drunk beyond comprehension and ten times more lively than when sober.
Ethan tore his eyes away from her laughing face with some effort. The incessant yearning that gnawed at his insides whenever he looked at her was becoming pure agony.
In minutes, he heard that distinct laugh again, this time nearby as she approached the bar. Ethan pointedly stared at his glass, though he could see out of the corner of his eye that the paramedic, Aveiro, accompanied her.
“I got them,” she was saying, placing her hand on his muscular forearm. It made something coil unpleasantly in Ethan's gut. “I'm not as think as you drunk I am.”
“Very convincing, Lilac.” The paramedic laughed pleasantly. “I'll get the drinks for everyone and you can find us a table in the beer garden. How's that?”
With very little protest, Lilac moved towards the garden exit, not sparing a single glance toward Ethan. He took a swig of his drink, pretending the slight did not affect him when in fact, his chest felt as though it had been stomped on.
One minute of pretending was enough to prove Ethan was a terrible actor, however. He stole a glance at her retreating form, noticing how she stumbled in her drunken state. Before he knew what he was doing, he was on his feet, following her out into the golden cast of the string lights.
Ethan reached her just in time for she stumbled at the doorway. Before either of them could blink, he leaped forward and caught her in his arms. Lilac dissolved into a giggling mess. “Sorry about—”
Her words cut off abruptly when she realized it was him. All traces of that stunning smile disappeared at once, her body tensing where he held her.
“Are you alright?”
“Fine.”
The silence between them was deafening. Despite the resentment in her eyes, Ethan could not look away, surrendering to the pull she held over him.
Tell her.
“You're drunk,” he observed quietly instead.
A small sliver of hurt became evident in her expression. “Not drunk enough.”
At long last, she freed herself from his grasp, averting her eyes to the ground. Perhaps she too was afraid of what her mind would conjure if their eyes met again. Memories of their tangled bodies, desperately moving together as they raced to the end of their relationship. As they settled into their inevitable roles of attending and intern with every stolen kiss.
“How are you getting home? I can take you—”
“Stop,” she pleaded, glancing up to cut him a glare. “You don't get to do that anymore.”
“Do what?”
“Act like we're… something. You made it very clear you only ever want to be my boss.”
Her words were far less slurred than before but she still struggled to retain control of them. It struck Ethan belatedly that she was fighting against the tears.
“I still worry about you, Lilac.”
“Well, don't,” she snapped. “I'll be fine.”
“Lilac,” he started, feeling his own frustration starting to boil.
Tell her now.
“Don't!”
Her voice was rising over the music now, earning them curious glances from a nearby couple.
“You can stop worrying about me!”
Ethan felt something snap.
“Stop worrying about you? Stop worrying about you?! I can barely stop thinking of you!”
The words rang between them like a gunshot.
Lilac looked at him, stunned.
He couldn't take the words back now, even if they were true. The hurt and the heartbreak from the past week had reared its head. “We can't—” he stated, but stopped to try again. “We shouldn't do this now.”
Her eyes shone with unshed tears. “You should go.”
Ethan nodded once and obeyed, leaving her side without stopping to memorize her face or without saying a proper goodbye. With a pang, he realized that would be the last time he saw her before he left for Brazil.
And, like the coward that he was, he hadn't been able to tell her.

2012 NFL Draft - The Fantasy Spin
Tumblr media
It's the first week of April, and with dream football in the middle of the off-season, we're all starving for a little nibble of some arena news and info. Thankfully, the 2012 NFL Draft is right around the corner, and dream football managers out there are eager to see where the new crop of rookies wind up.
Just as essential as a rookie's skill, capabilities and efficiency are what team drafts that gamer. It means everything as far as overall production. Just how much will that novice contribute? Does he end up being an instant starter? Or, will he rest on the sidelines to discover his craft? Naturally, none of these questions can be answered in April. But, it does help to take an early look at potential, and the value of that rookie to a PPR fantasy group.
A prime example is Cam Newton. Drafted # 1 total in the 2011 NFL Draft, his measurables as a football player were off-the-charts great. A combo-threat as a quarterback, he powered Auburn to a national title, running and tossing his way to a 14-0 season and a Heisman Prize award. While there were initial questions on his capability as a passer, his general prospective drove his need high enough to be the first choice in the draft by the Carolina Panthers. However, the # 1 general pick status didn't translate to the same love in dream drafts. And, what a magnificent oversight that was for dream supervisors, and particularly supervisors of keeper leagues. In my own leagues, Cam Newton went undrafted in my keeper league and drafted in the 15th round of my PPR league. And, likely the only reason he was drafted in the PPR league was the manager was a Panther's fan. Webcam went onto a beast novice season - 4,051 lawns passing, 21 TDs, 706 lawns hurrying, 14 rushing TDs. That's like getting a quarterback and running back's production from ONE PLAYER. Amazing!
But, the question pleads to be asked. Could that season be forecasted by any prognosticator? Probably not, a minimum of not to the level of success Cam Newton had. And to a lesser degree, could we have anticipated the relative success of Andy Dalton and his fellow rookie colleague, A.J. Green. Maybe not. Historically, rookies have been non-factors in fantasy football. On unusual celebrations, they'll make a big splash - like Newton, LaGarrette Blount and Mike Williams in 2010, Steve Slaton, Matt Specialty and Chris Johnson in 2008.
Check out the statistics for yourself: NFL.com Rookie Data for 2011
So, as we head into the beginning of the 2012 fantasy football season, let's take this knowledge with us into our fantasy drafts. You'll be tempted by Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III. Maybe you salivate over Trent Richardson or Justin Blackmon. Temper those feelings and let the historical stats be your guide. It's a hit and misses out on a game, with more misses out on than hits. Take a mid to late round stance to any and all rookies - and put your money on the producers first. I 'd kick myself more if I passed up on a strong producer like Fred Jackson in the 2nd round to take a leaflet on a rookie like Richardson. There might be more upside with Richardson; however, it's still unidentified. Go for the reputable first, and take shots at upside later on in the draft. Leave the silly gambles for Vegas and dream supervisors who always never ever win championships. And all of us have among those in every league.

Drew Brees' 20 top receivers
Drew Brees will be the first to tell you he wouldn't be on the brink of becoming the career leader in passing yards without the help of his receivers.
With that, here's a look at the top 20 pass catchers to play with Brees during his 18-year NFL career before he plays Monday (Oct. 8) with the New Orleans Saints against the Washington Redskins.
Brees has 71,740 career passing yards, 98 fewer than Brett Favre and 200 fewer than Peyton Manning.
No. 20: Saints running back Alvin Karama
116 receptions, 1,162 yards
A quick-riser on this list, Kamara has posted these numbers over the course of 20 regular season games after the Saints selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He catches passes from the backfield and while positioned along the line of scrimmage as a wide receiver.
No. 19: Chargers receiver Keenan McCardell
97 receptions, 1,255 yards
This 16-year NFL veteran played with Brees for only the quarterback’s final two seasons with the Chargers.
No. 18: Saints tight end Benjamin Watson
121 receptions, 1,277 yards
Watson posted his career-best numbers as a 35-year-old with the Saints in 2015 with 74 catches for 825 yards and six touchdowns. He rejoined the Saints this past offseason after spending two seasons with the Ravens.
No. 17: Saints running back Mark Ingram
202 receptions, 1,379 yards
His role in the passing game expanded after his fourth season with the Saints by averaging better than 50 catches over the last three seasons. A first-round selection out of Alabama in 2012, Ingram is now in his eighth season.

No. 16: Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey
139 receptions, 1,460 yards
Shockey came to the Saints after six seasons with the Giants. He played three seasons with the Saints, who won the Super Bowl at the end of his second season with the team.
No. 15: Wide receiver Kenny Stills
95 receptions, 1,572 yards
A fifth-round selected wideout from Oklahoma in 2014, Still spent only two seasons with the Saints before a trade with the Miami Dolphins.
No. 14: Running back LaDainian Tomlinson
254 receptions, 1,750 yards
The No. 5 overall pick in the same NFL Draft the Chargers also selected Brees with the top pick in the second round, Tomlinson numbers came over the course of five seasons from 2001 to 2005. Tomlinson has the unique distinction of having thrown Brees a touchdown pass in 2003.
No. 13: Wide receiver Eric Parker
132 receptions, 1,941 yards
The top wideout on this list to catch all his passes while with the Chargers, Parker had Brees as a teammate for four of his five NFL seasons.
No. 12: Wide receiver Willie Snead IV
144 receptions, 1,927 yards
One of several undrafted players to find success with Brees as his quarterback, Snead played three seasons for the Saints from 2015 to 2017. He joined the Baltimore Ravens as a restricted free agent this past offseason.
No. 11: Running back Darren Sproles
235 receptions, 1,991 yards
The only player to catch passes from Brees with both the Chargers and Saints, Spoles saw only limited time with the Chargers as a rookie in 2005. That season, Sproles caught three passes from Brees for 10 yards. The rest came during his three seasons with the Saints from 2011 to 2013. He’s now with the Philadelphia Eagles.
No. 10: Running back Reggie Bush
294 receptions, 2,142 yards
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, the Southern Cal product posted more yards receiving than he did rushing during his five seasons with the Saints.
No. 9: Tight end Antonio Gates
180 receptions, 2,279 yards
The top Chargers player on this list, Gates played his first three NFL seasons with Brees as a teammate. He’s a former college basketball player whose transition to professional football inspired teams to draft and sign the likes of Jimmy Graham. Gates, 38, is still active, now in his 16th NFL season.

No. 8: Saints running back Pierre Thomas
327 receptions, 2,608 yards
The top running back on this list, Thomas caught a nigh number of screen passes during his eight seasons with the Saints. He arrived as an undrafted running back out of Illinois in 2007 and quickly became a key element to the Saints offense, helping them win a Super Bowl in his third season.

No. 7: Saints receiver Robert Meachem
162 receptions, 2,695 yards
A first-round drafted receiver out of Tennessee in 2008, his best season came in the Saints’ Super Bowl season of 2009. He caught 45 passes for 722 yards and nine touchdowns that season. He played six of his seven NFL seasons with the Saints.
No. 6: Saints receiver Brandin Cooks
208 receptions, 2,782 yards
Another deep threat for Brees over his three seasons in New Orleans. Cooks scored on the two longest pass plays in Brees’ career – 98 yards against the Raiders and 87 yards against the Panthers, both in 2016 and in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. He’s now with the Los Angeles Rams.

No. 5: Saints receiver Michael Thomas
238 receptions, 2,827 yards
A quick-riser up this list, Thomas holds the NFL record for most receptions in the first two seasons of a career, and he began his third season at a record pace. How much higher he moves on this list will depend on how much longer Brees plays. By the end of 2019, Thomas could well be third.

No. 4: Saints receiver Devery Henderson
220 receptions, 3,945 yards
A consistent deep threat out of LSU, Henderson was another holdover from before Payton and Brees arrived. He played nine seasons with the Saints, the last seven of those with Brees as his quarterback. Of his 17 touchdowns on passes from Brees, 10 of them were from 40 yards or longer, with another one from 37 yards.

No. 3: Saints receiver Lance Moore
346 receptions, 4,281 yards
One of the few holdovers from before Sean Payton and Brees arrived in 2006, the undrafted Moore became a steady contributor over his eight seasons with the team. He might be best known for his acrobatic two-point conversion catch of a pass from Brees in the Saints’ Super Bowl win.
No. 2: Saints tight end Jimmy Graham
383 receptions, 4,725 yards
Brees targeted nobody more than Graham over the four consecutive seasons in which he caught at least 85 passes, including his breakout 2011 season with a then team-record 99 catches for 1,310 yards and 11 touchdowns. His 16 touchdowns in 2013 led the NFL. The Saints traded him to Seattle after the 2014 season. He’s now with the Green Bay Packers.

No. 1: Saints receiver Marques Colston
706 receptions, 9,709 yards
The longest-tenured receiver for Brees in his career, Colston joined the Saints as a seventh-round selected wideout from Hofstra in 2006. He played his entire 10-year NFL career in New Orleans and is the franchise record holder for receptions and receiving yards. All but five of 711 career catches came from Brees.

Cam Newton Returns to the Carolina Panthers
Tumblr media
After a one-year stint with the New England Patriots, quarterback Cam Newton returned to the Carolina Panthers on a one-year contract on November 11, 2021. Newton will make a guaranteed $4.5 million through the duration of the 2021 regular season and could earn an additional $5.5 million in bonuses. Newton played 15 games with the Patriots during the 2020 season and led the team to a win-loss record of 7-8. He threw for eight touchdowns and scored 12 rushing touchdowns, the latter of which was the second-highest mark of his 11-year career. He also accumulated 2,657 passing yards and 592 rushing yards. New England released Newton during this year's training camp to clear a path for rookie Mac Jones to become the team's starting quarterback. Carolina, meanwhile, began the season with Sam Darnold at quarterback after acquiring the University of Southern California alumnus in a trade with the New York Jets. Darnold led the team to a 4-5 record through nine games before suffering a shoulder injury that was expected to keep him out of action for at least four weeks. A three-time Pro Bowl quarterback, Newton was selected by the Panthers with the first overall pick in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) Draft and won Associated Press (AP) Offensive Rookie of the Year the following season. He registered a career-best 4,051 passing yards, 706 rushing yards, and 35 touchdowns (21 passing and 14 rushing) that season. He played well the following three seasons, but had the best year of his career in 2015. Newton started all 16 regular season games for the Panthers that season and led the team to a 15-1 record. He recorded 3,837 passing yards, 636 rushing yards, and scored a combined 45 touchdowns (35 passing and 10 rushing). Newton was named AP Offensive Player of the Year and NFL MVP for his impressive performance in 2015. Prior to signing with the Panthers in 2021, Newton played 125 games over nine seasons with the team and accumulated 29,041 passing yards, 4,806 rushing yards, and 240 touchdowns (182 passing and 58 rushing). He threw for at least 211 yards per game in each of his nine seasons with the team and won 10 NFC Offensive Player of the Week awards. He won five of those during a nine-week stretch in the second half of the 2015 season. A 32-year-old Georgia native, Newton was released by the Panthers in 2019. He appeared in only two games with the team that season after he aggravated a Lisfranc injury sustained during the preseason. Newton signed with the Panthers just four days before its Week 10 game against the 8-1 Arizona Cardinals and served as backup to P.J. Walker. Yet, he managed to play a handful of snaps and made an immediate impact with scores on his first two plays of the game. He scored on a 2-yard run just four minutes into the game, and later completed a 2-yard pass touchdown pass to Robby Anderson. Coincidentally, the game was played at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, where Newton played his last college game and first NFL game with the Panthers in 2011. Carolina won the game 34-10.

Jake Bean #1
Requested by Anon:  I’m so glad your requests are open! Can you please do Jake Bean and cute night in helping him de-stress?
*Hi! I hope this is cute enough. I want to keep this as lighthearted and realistic as possible so I hope I got that part right. Enjoy! :)*
Word count: 706
Tumblr media
Popcorn – check.
Really cheesy romantic comedy – check.
One greatly comfortable throw blanket – check.
And junk food that would last you for days – check.
Nodding, you hopped on the couch beside Jake and snuggled, passing the remote to him and waiting for him to play the movie. If you close your eyes really hard and pretend, you can almost make yourself believe that his parents weren’t in the other room preparing some more midnight snack before joining you in the den.
A few days before the start of the WJC, the boys managed to snag some time off to go home, pack their bags, and prepare for the long week ahead.
And who’s at home? You.
Jake shifted on the couch until he was sitting on your lap, his legs dangling off the couch. Automatically, your hand went to his hair, stroking it absentmindedly.
“I’ll see you in Buffalo?” he asked, as if he’s not even sure if you’ll be there.
Everyone in his family knows you’ll be there, front and center.
“With my toque and jersey, boy,” you chuckled.
“This year’s tournament is stressing me out big time,” he laughed sarcastically, “like I’m gonna vomit all over the open rink.”
“Don’t worry,” you snickered, “I’m bringing the bucket.”
This time, he laughed sincerely, “also some wash cloth for Brady Tkachuk or something.”
“Oh,” you giggled, “because you’re gonna do it in the middle of the Canada-USA game?”
He rolled his eyes, “duh.”
Everyone in this year’s WJC Team Canada is nervous because of the clusterfuck that was last year, everyone from last year’s roster especially. If Jake was already in this much stress, you can’t even begin to imagine the weight on Carter Hart’s shoulders.
“Hey,” you slapped his shoulder playfully, “I thought this was supposed to be a hockey-free night?”
He reached for a handful of pop corn and proceeded to stuff his mouth with it, “hmm-mm,” he nodded.
You pulled him up on a sitting position and grabbed his hand, gently massaging it.
“Babe,” he looked at you mock-seriously, “is this some ploy so you could hold my hand because you can just tell me, you know.”
You squeezed, “says the guy who literally had me hold his hand the whole flight on the way to rookie camp.”
He scoffed, “I said it once and I’ll say it again – those were nerves,” he touched his forehead with yours, “and no hockey talk.”
“Fine,” you relented, grabbing your bag and taking out the wrapped present you had for him, “we won’t be spending Christmas together so I thought to give you this in advance,” you handed him the wrapped gift, which is a new limited edition box of Cards Against Humanity. It’s not much but you bonded over that game when you first started dating.
“You have my sword,” he started when he figured what your present is.
“You have my bow,” you continued, clearly remembering the iconic cards he used to ask you to be his girlfriend. Jake can be weird like that.
“And,” he snorted, “my firm buttocks!”
You guffawed, “to be fair, they are very firm,” you poked his side, “you can probably open a can of soda with your butt muscles alone,” you whispered, remembering his parents are in the other room.
He choked at that, “stop,” he sniggered, “and that’s what playing sports does to your body,” he gently bumped his head with yours, “you should try it some time.”
“Eh,” you shrugged, “I get enough workout just from watching you bump into guys,” raising your arm, you flexed it and poked the tiny muscles there.
Ever the competitive dork, Jake pulled his shirt sleeve up and flexed his arm, winking at you, “what do you think?”
The popcorn you threw at his bulging muscled bounced off, “show off.”
His smile was lopsided, “sports.”
Reaching for his hair, you tugged on it a little, “yeah, yeah. You’re the big defenceman and I’m just the girl in the stands.”
“Prettiest girl in the stands,” he corrected.
“Well, don’t let your mom hear that,” you giggled.
He turned his head a little so he can look at you, “second prettiest girl in the stands,” he chuckled.
You shrugged, “I’m cool with that.”

7 young quarterbacks who can threaten the NFL’s passing records one day
Tumblr media
Patrick Mahomes and Baker Mayfield have already broken records in their young careers.
The next generation is poised to leave its mark on the record books.
The NFL is about to see a lot of its established stars at quarterback head off into retirement over the next few years. Longtime starters like Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, and (maybe) Tom Brady are winding down their careers. That’ll open the door for the next generation of stud quarterbacks to leave their impact on the league — and the record books.
When it comes to quarterbacks, there are two records that everyone loves to focus on: passing yards and touchdowns. Brees broke the yards record last season and currently has 74,437, with at least another year to add to it. Peyton Manning is the all-time leader in passing touchdowns with 539, but Brees (520) and Brady (517) will have a chance to surpass that number this season.
Once those future Hall of Famers officially move on, it will be time for a new crop of quarterbacks to try to break those records. Here are seven recently drafted quarterbacks who have a chance rank near the top of the NFL’s all-time leaderboards.
*We used the quarterbacks’ current averages to project their stats over a 15-year career, but it’s likely that some of them will play longer than that — just like Manning, Brees, and Brady.
Frontrunners
There are a handful of young quarterbacks who look poised to have their names littered throughout NFL record books. In fact, some of these guys are already there.
Patrick Mahomes
Mahomes, 17 games: 5,381 yards, 50 touchdowns Mahomes, per 16-game averages extrapolated over 15 years: 75,967 yards, 706 touchdowns
This list has to start with Mahomes.
Mahomes only has one season under his belt as a starter for the Kansas City Chiefs, but he might already be the best quarterback in the NFL. In 2018, he threw for 5,097 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions on his way to winning the MVP.
It’s highly unlikely that he’ll have that type of production every season — but let’s pretend he will for a second. At that rate, it would take him about 14 more seasons to break the current all-time record for passing yards. He would only need 11 more years to break the touchdown record, as it stands now. He won’t turn 24 until September, so it’s definitely possible that he could play at least that long.
If Mahomes were able to keep up that pace for 15 seasons and then retire, he would finish his career with 75,967 yards, 706 touchdowns (the record is 539!), and just 184 interceptions. Not bad!
Deshaun Watson
Watson, 23 games: 5,864 yards, 45 touchdowns Watson, per 16-game averages extrapolated over 15 years: 61,190 yards, 470 touchdowns
Watson was on pace to smash every rookie passing record in 2017 before he suffered an ACL injury that cut his season short after just seven games.
In those seven games for Houston, he threw for 19 touchdowns and scored a touchdown on 9.3 percent of his attempts. That touchdown rate was going to be impossible for him to match in year two, when it dropped to 5.1 percent. Watson was still fantastic in 2018, though, even while getting sacked a whopping 62 times. He made the most of his attempts, ranking eighth in the NFL in adjusted yards per attempt and passing for 4,165 yards and 26 touchdowns.
At his current pace, it would take him more than 15 years to reach the top of both the passing yards and touchdowns lists — but it’s not impossible, especially if the Texans can keep him upright. Still, he’s on track to dominate the league for years to come.
One record that Watson can break is the career mark for adjusted yards per attempt, which is a stat that weighs touchdowns and interceptions. Right now, Aaron Rodgers is the all-time leader among qualified passers with 8.39 adjusted yards per attempt. So far, Watson is at 8.46.
Jared Goff
Goff, 31 games in the McVay years: 8,492 yards, 60 touchdowns Goff (McVay years), per 16-game averages extrapolated over 15 years: 65,745 yards, 465 touchdowns
Not many would’ve thought Goff would be on this list after his disaster of a rookie season in LA. In seven games as a first-year starter, he only averaged 156 yards per game and threw five total touchdowns.
That all changed when the Rams hired Sean McVay as their head coach prior to the 2017 season. With McVay, Goff has averaged 4,383 yards and 31 touchdowns per 16 games.
If he’s able to maintain those numbers over a 15-year career, Goff would end up with 65,745 yards, ranking fifth at this point in time.
Like Watson, his extrapolated numbers won’t get him to the top of the yards or touchdowns leaderboards. However, quarterbacks are playing longer than ever. By the time Goff has played 15 seasons, he’ll be just 36 years old.
A lot would have to go right for that to happen, including Goff staying healthy and McVay staying with the Rams. Mahomes would have to slow down or retire early, as well. Yet despite Goff’s rocky start, he’s proven that he can put up numbers that compare with the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
Carson Wentz
Wentz, 40 games: 10,152 yards, 70 touchdowns Wentz, per 16-game averages extrapolated over 15 years: 60,912 yards, 420 touchdowns
Wentz has the talent, coaching, and front office support — he just needs to stay healthy. Over the past two seasons, he has missed eight games for the Philadelphia Eagles due to a torn ACL in 2017 and a back injury at the end of 2018.
When he’s on the field, he plays like a top quarterback. Since 2017, he’s averaged 265.4 yards per game and has passed for 54 touchdowns. If those stats were extrapolated over 16 games, he’d be averaging 4,247 yards and 36 touchdowns per season.
Those numbers are undoubtedly great, but Wentz hasn’t played a full season since his rookie year in 2016. He has yet to actually hit 4,000 yards in a season even though he’s more than capable of that.
It’s impossible to predict how many games Wentz will play in the coming years. If he can stay on the field, his name should be near the top of NFL record books when it’s all said and done.
Baker Mayfield
Mayfield, 14 games: 3,725 yards, 27 touchdowns Mayfield, per 16-game averages extrapolated over 15 years: 63,857 yards, 463 touchdowns
Mayfield has the smallest sample size in this group, but he was so impressive over the second half of his rookie season in Cleveland. Mayfield threw for 2,254 yards and 19 touchdowns in the eight games that new head coach Freddie Kitchens was calling plays. That puts him at a 4,508 yards and 38 touchdowns if he replicated that performance for an entire season.
In 2019, Mayfield should be able to pick up right where he left off. The Browns added Odell Beckham Jr. to an offense that already featured Jarvis Landry, David Njoku, and Nick Chubb. Health permitting, Mayfield and Beckham should light up defenses together.
If Mayfield can continue that level of play under Kitchens, he’d have 67,620 yards and 570 touchdowns after 15 seasons — the latter of which would be a present-day record.
Dark horses
These quarterbacks haven’t put up big stats yet, but they’re capable of doing so in the right situations.
Dak Prescott
Prescott, 48 games: 10,876 yards, 67 touchdowns Prescott, per 16-game averages extrapolated over 15 years: 54,380 yards, 335 touchdowns
While opinions on Prescott vary, he’s slated to get an extension that will lock him down as the Cowboys’ franchise quarterback.
Even though Dallas has gone 32-16 under Prescott, he hasn’t produced monster passing numbers. He has yet to reach 4,000 yards in a season despite not missing a single game in three years. To be fair to him, he’s been a weapon on the ground for the Cowboys, with 944 yards and 18 touchdowns in his career.
Prescott might never be a high-volume passer, but it’ll be interesting to track how he grows with Amari Cooper in the coming years — assuming they both get new deals. Prescott and Cooper both benefitted from Cooper’s arrival to Dallas in the middle of last season. Prescott went from averaging 202.4 passing yards per game without Cooper to 274.2 yards in the nine remaining games with him.
Now that Prescott has his No. 1 receiver and a new playcaller in Kellen Moore, he might be able to lead a strong passing attack that racks up yards and touchdowns. It would take a lot, but if he can pump up his passing stats, it could help him rise up the leaderboard.
Jameis Winston
Winston, 56 games: 14,628 yards, 88 touchdowns Winston, per 16-game averages extrapolated over 15 years: 62,691 yards, 377 touchdowns
Winston is a talented quarterback who just can’t seem to get out of his own way. Whether it’s off-field incidents leading to suspensions or getting benched due to unbelievably bad turnovers, he’s only started 22 games in the last two seasons.
When he’s on the field, Winston has been able to put up big numbers. He passed for more than 4,000 yards in his first two years in the league and was on pace to throw for 100 touchdowns in his first four seasons — only six quarterbacks since the merger have been able to accomplish that feat.
This season, Winston will have quarterback guru Bruce Arians leading the way. Tampa Bay’s offense is also loaded with playmakers like Mike Evans, O.J. Howard, and Chris Godwin. The weapons are there for Winston and now so is the coach; he just needs to quit the boneheaded plays.
If he can stay clean on and off the field and piece together the best season of his career, he’ll likely be extended as Tampa Bay’s quarterback of the future. That would give him the chance to pile up stats and find his way into the record books.

Real or not? Brewers blow golden opportunity to catch Rockies – SweetSpot
The Rockies had already lost, shut out 4-0 in an afternoon game in San Francisco. With a win, the Brewers would tie the Rockies for the second wild card.
Milwaukee’s starter in this crucial game with 12 days left in the season: Aaron Wilkerson.
Who?
Baseball in September can be a strange thing as even playoff contenders scramble to fill holes on pitching staffs worn down by injuries and fatigue. In Milwaukee’s cause, the Brewers needed somebody to start for Jimmy Nelson, their best pitcher who went down for the season — and part of 2018 — when he partially tore a labrum diving back into first base after a base hit on Sept. 8.
Wilkerson had gone undrafted out of Cumberland University, played independent ball in 2013 and part of 2014, then signed with the Red Sox and was traded to the Brewers last summer in the Aaron Hill deal. He spent the season at Double-A with good numbers (3.16 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 143 K’s in 142⅓ IP), made a start for Colorado Springs in the Pacific Coast League playoffs and tossed seven no-hit innings. Still, he’s not even included in MLB.com’s top 30 Brewers prospects, a nod to his age (he’s 28) and lack of pedigree.
But here he was, making his first major league start.
“We’ll just see how far he can get,” manager Craig Counsell had said before the game. “Obviously, it’s his first big league start and it’s a big spot, but we feel like he’s been pitching in a way that we think he can have success out there.”
Closer Corey Knebel leaves the field after surrendering the walk-off blast that cost his Brewers a shot at catching the Rockies in the National League wild-card race. Justin Berl/Getty Images
Wilkerson would last just 2⅓ innings on Wednesday, giving up three runs in the third, but it was All-Star closer Corey Knebel who would fail in the end. The Brewers had taken a 4-3 lead over the Pirates in the seventh. In the eighth, Andrew McCutchen doubled off Anthony Swarzak and Counsell brought in Knebel for a four-out save. David Freese hit a little dribbler down the third-base line, a do-or-die play for Knebel. He had a chance with a perfect throw, but he also could have just eaten the ball and gone after the next batter. Instead, his throw sailed wide and McCutchen scored the tying run. Then in the ninth, Adam Frazier won it with a two-out homer off a 98 mph heater:
That’ll do it. Out goes Frazier! #Walkoff #RaiseIt http://pic.twitter.com/MJqiUuSMC8
— Pirates (@Pirates) September 21, 2017
So, tough one for the Brewers. Now comes their biggest test of the season: A four-game series at home against the Cubs. Hey, sweep them again and the Brewers move into first place. (The Cubs lead the National League Central by 3½ games.) You wonder who’s going to available in the Milwaukee bullpen in that first game, however. Knebel has pitched three days in a row. Swarzak has pitched three days in a row. Josh Hader has pitched twice in three days and thrown 42 pitches.
Counsell and pitching coach Derek Johnson have done a terrific job with the Brewers’ staff. They’ve had to churn through 13 different starting pitchers. They’re still in it. They have 10 games left in 11 days, and they can still catch the Cubs. Who’s available? Everyone.
We love our round numbers in baseball. Chris Sale needed 13 strikeouts to get to 300, and he got 13 in a 9-0 victory over the Orioles:
Chris Sale had 300 on his mind tonight. #LightsOut http://pic.twitter.com/cOJ1EoFXlA
— MLB (@MLB) September 21, 2017
Sale became the first American League pitcher to get 300 K’s since Pedro Martinez in 1999 — and joined Pedro as the only Red Sox hurler to get there. He’s the seventh lefty in AL history to do so, joining Rube Waddell (look him up!) and Sam McDowell (“Sudden Sam” — one of the best nicknames ever), who each did it twice, plus Randy Johnson, Vida Blue and Mickey Lolich. Five NL lefties have done it: Clayton Kershaw, Johnson (four times), Sandy Koufax (three times), Steve Carlton and Lady Baldwin back in 1886. (More on Sale’s 300 strikeouts from ESPN Stats & Information here.)
Anyway, awesome milestone, but the important number from this game was that zero runs allowed. The Yankees had won earlier, so the Red Sox kept the margin in the AL East at three games. Since Sept. 5, the Yankees have gone 11-3 — but the Red Sox have gone 11-3. Boston’s magic number to clinch the division drops to eight, but they clinched a playoff berth with the Angels’ loss to the Indians on the West Coast.
Wild-card winner of the night. Well, we just told you the Rockies and Brewers lost. But the Cardinals won! They’re 2½ back of the Rockies. My man Tommy Pham had three hits, while Matt Carpenter, Dexter Fowler and Paul DeJong all homered in a 9-2 victory over the Reds. The Cardinals get the Reds again on Thursday, with a decisive advantage in the pitching matchup — Carlos Martinez versus Homer Bailey. Does it feel like the final mile of a marathon and the Cardinals might still have their legs for that final sprint?
Wild-card loser of the night. The Rockies have held a playoff position since April 14, and they’re safe for at least another couple of days. Despite these two road losses to the Giants, the Rockies could still finish with the best road record in franchise history. They’re 39-38, and they have finished above .500 on the road just once, going 41-40 in 2009, which was the year of their last playoff appearance. Their home winning percentage, however, is just 10th best in franchise history.
The Rockies have hit reasonably well on the road (for them) with a .706 OPS, the highest since 2009. But they haven’t hit as well at home as they have in some years. Their home/road OPS differential:
Rockies home-road OPS differentialYearCoors OPS advantage2017+1482016+1852015+1892014+2662013+1362012+2052011+1132010+2122009+132
If the Rockies end up missing the postseason, most will blame the pitching staff. And yes, the young starters and the bullpen haven’t been as good in the second half. But another reason to think about: They haven’t scored enough runs at home.
If you can mention Bye Bye Balboni, you have to do it. One of the most cherished records in team sports was finally broken on Wednesday. Steve Balboni’s Royals record of 36 home runs had stood since 1985, but Mike Moustakas finally broke it with this homer:
There’s a new home run king in Kansas City. #RaisedRoyal http://pic.twitter.com/2LHh0Lahfk
— Kansas City Royals (@Royals) September 21, 2017
Moustakas had been in a huge home run slump. He hit his 35th way back on Aug. 15. Since then, he had homered just once in 28 games and 91 at-bats. Some Royals fans wondered if Balboni had placed a curse on Moustakas. Apparently not the case. Remember a couple of years ago when Moustakas tried to focus more on hitting the ball to the opposite field? He went back to pull-heavy Moustakas this season. He has hit 15 more home runs than his previous career high.
He’s also the owner of my favorite oddballs stats of the season. Moustakas has struck out looking once all season — on a pitch low and away off the plate. Baltimore’s Chris Davis has fanned looking 72 times. That seems incredible, but Davis did it 79 times last season. Aaron Judge and Wil Myers are tied for second at 60.
Anyway, there were five team home run records older than Balboni’s:
Big boys go yard. Giancarlo Stanton hit No. 56 and Aaron Judge hit No. 45. Judge also joined an exclusive club with Ted Williams and Al Rosen as rookies to reach 100 RBIs and 100 runs scored. There is some dispute over whether Rosen should be a considered a rookie: He wasn’t at the time (1950), but he would be under today’s standards, as he had just 65 plate appearances before that season.
Oh, J.D. Martinez hit another one as well:
No lead is safe with @JDMartinez14 at the plate. #JustDingers http://pic.twitter.com/xg9xWSO6bf
— MLB (@MLB) September 21, 2017
That’s 41 in 111 games for Martinez. That’s a pace of 59 homers over 160 games, but he missed time with an injury. His slugging percentage with Arizona is over .700 and it’s .672 overall — and 38 points higher than Stanton’s. Incredible.
Disaster strikes Puerto Rico. There have been 28 major leaguers to play in 2017 who born in Puerto Rico, including Francisco Lindor, Yadier Molina, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Correa and Jose Berrios. There are other players of Puerto Rican descent born in the States. Hurricane Maria — the first Category 4 hurricane to make a direct hit on the island since 1928 — has devastated the country. The entire island is without power. It could take months to repair the aging power grid, depending on the damage discovered, the governor said.
You can check the Twitter handles as many players sent out their thoughts. It couldn’t have been easy to play as they waited for news. As ESPN’s Marly Rivera reported, “I have talked or texted with a lot of the Puerto Rican players in MLB, and a lot of them have not heard from their families regarding the impact of Hurricane Maria.” Without power, communication is limited.
As the Houston area sets out on the long recovery from Hurricane Harvey and Florida from Hurricane Irma, don’t forget Puerto Rico, if you can afford a financial donation. Remember, these are our fellow U.S. citizens.
Then there was the earthquake in Mexico City that already has left more than 200 dead, as workers continue to dig through the rubble. These are our neighbors to the south. There are 15 major leaguers this season who were born in Mexico — interestingly, 14 of them pitchers — and, of course, many others of Mexican descent.
So, as we enjoy these final days of this little diversion called baseball, I think of those not as fortunate.
I think of a quote from Carl Sagan: “This is where we live, on a blue dot. … On that blue dot, that’s where everyone you know, and everyone you ever heard of, and every human being who ever lived, lived out their lives — it’s a very small stage in a great cosmic arena. I think this perspective underscores our responsibility to preserve and cherish that blue dot, the only home we have.”
