The Ringed Castle, Part 3, Ch 7

This... This is the absolute peak of Lymond & Philippa's relationship, for me. Especially the "Hit him!" exchange at the end.

Don't get me wrong, I love the angst and intensity and eventual resolution of Checkmate - I'm a sucker for that. I love the anvil moment, the feeling "like a dog whose master had died", the chase through Lyons, the confrontations in bedchamber & library, etc etc.

But this - the way they just zing effortlessly off each other. The teamwork as they take down Austin. The capping each other's quotes, the mechanical and fiery harpsichord displays, the beautiful combination of silliness and practicality. The way they rib each other mercilessly. There's everything about their relationship, how they complement each other so well, but it's just coming from a place of pure, inherent nature - not yet weighed down by the angst of loving each other.

And I am a SUCKER for the "Francis Crawford and his wife" trope (and every variant of it), the marriage that's so perfect only they have no idea yet (and precisely because of that!).
