Take These Financial Steps Before the New Year
The New Year is just around the corner. It is a time to celebrate all the great things in the year while planning some goals for oneself for the upcoming year. While this year might not have gone the way most people planned it to be, it did give us some time to rethink multiple aspects of our lives, one of the most important one being our financial health. The pandemic induced job losses and negative market sentiment took a toll on many people’s lives, reminding us of the importance of money management and financial planning.
Tumblr media
Let us look at five financial tips that you can take on before the new year with the worst behind us.
Get Rid of Debt - Before the next year begins, take a pledge to pay back all your debt as soon as possible. Take a look at all your debts and identify the most expensive ones (higher interest rates). Make a plan to pay them all one by one and set time-bound goals for yourself. Make sure you set reasonable goals. No matter how small the amount is that you can afford to pay back at the moment, do not delay.
Pay Yourself First - ‘A part of what you earn is yours to keep’ make this quote from ‘The Richest Man in Babylon’ the foundation of how you save. Make it a point to save at least 10% of your monthly income as soon as you receive it. This is the only way to stay ahead of the curve and grow your wealth. If you keep spending everything you earn, you might enjoy a lavish lifestyle for the time being, but it will be temporary. Your financial health will also not increase.
Stick to a Budget - No incredible feat can be accomplished without a plan. An account is a financial plan that you create to achieve your financial goals—pre-plan how much you wish to save each month. Decide how much you want to spend on needs and how much you want to spend on wants, and then make sure you stick to that amount. This type of financial planning will increase your financial health massively.
Account for Risk - Financial planning involves many components that aim to reduce financial trouble and ensure financial stability. Make sure you have an emergency fund that has enough money to take care of 6 months of your living expenses at least. This fund is like a job loss or accident; it should not be used for any other purposes like a vacation. Make sure you have the necessary insurances. Having life insurance and health insurance is a must, especially if you are the family’s sole bread earner.
Save for the Future - Always plan. When it comes to financial planning, ignorance is not bliss. Understand your financial needs for the future and save for them beforehand accordingly.
The better your financial habits, the more will be your Financial Wellness score on the Wizely app and the more rewards you are likely to earn every day with a chance to earn a mega bounty of up to Rs 25 lakhs every Wednesday!

How to Start and Emergency Fund as an Adult
*** For more tips on how to *adult,* subscribe to https://www.projectadulthood.com/, a weekly newsletter on growing up. Think of it as your instruction manual to adulting :)
Here’s a crazy (bad) stat: 4 in 10 Americans are unable to cover unexpected expenses in a time of crisis. Unfortunately, few countries do any better.
The reason why this is bad can be summed up in two words: things happen. Life can be full of unpleasant surprises. Surprises like coming home one day to find that your roof is leaking or that your job no longer exists. Fortunately, a full-proof solution exists for taking the sting out of these situations: an emergency fund.
How to start an emergency fund
Tumblr media
Aim to save 3 to 6 months' expenses
According to most financial advisers, an emergency fund should cover at least 3 to 6 months of living expenses (NOT income), depending on your circumstances.
If your income varies or is uncertain (for example, if you're a freelancer), you may want to opt for a larger emergency fund (9 to 12 months of living expenses).
Living expenses include things like rent or mortgage payments, household bills, food, transport, etc. Basically, anything you need to survive — so no restaurant trips or Netflix. For example, if you need to spend $2,000 a month to cover necessities, you should have at least $6,000 in your emergency fund.
Tip: Take Charge America has a monthly/yearly expenses calculator.
Don't focus on debt repayment at the expense of an emergency fund
Tumblr media
While there is plenty of conflicting advice out there as to whether it’s best to pay off your debt first or build an emergency fund, in general, experts recommend doing both, especially if you don’t yet have an emergency budget. Although it may be tempting to pay off your debt(s) as quickly as possible, doing so without an emergency fund in place means that if an emergency — whether that’s a medical bill, a car repair, or something else entirely — does occur, you’ll probably need to borrow again, increasing your debt burden. Instead, a solid strategy is to focus on paying off high-interest debts + making minimum debt payments while at the same time putting aside at least a small amount — even $10 or $20 each month —  for your emergency fund until you have $1,000 or more in savings. Slowly build on that until you have a solid savings cushion to fall back on.
Review your income and lifestyle
Tumblr media
Apart from debt, people usually find it difficult to save because:
Their salary is too small, or
Their spending is too high.
If your salary is relatively small, see if you can make extra money from a side hustle or make yourself more employable and get a better-paying job (if possible).
If you go with the latter option, make sure to avoid “lifestyle inflation.” To quote George S. Clason’s classic “The Richest Man in Babylon,” “what each of us calls our ‘necessary expenses’ will always grow to equal our incomes unless we protest to the contrary.”
If your spending is too high, take a closer look at your expenses. What are you spending your money on? Is there anything, like alcohol, cigarettes, takeout coffee, junk food, etc., that you can cut out?
Tip: Side Hustle Nation has a list of 100+ side hustle ideas to make $500 in your spare time
Set monthly savings goals
Tumblr media
Whether that’s 15% of your pay a month or $50 a week, decide on how much you’ll be setting aside each month for your emergency fund.
Tip: Need to make a budget fast? Bankrate has a home budget calculator
Get a savings account
Tumblr media
That way, you can access your savings whenever you need them. Ideally, you want to get a savings account with a high-interest rate — just make sure that it’s separate from the account you already use so you’re not tempted to dip into your savings for fun things.
Even better, go for a high-yield savings account, which works pretty much the same as a normal savings account but has a much higher interest rate.
The last thing you want to do is invest your emergency fund. Imagine having to worry about selling your stocks while also thinking about car repairs. Not fun.
Tip: Investopedia has a list of the best high-yield savings accounts
Other tips
Tumblr media
Don't compare your financial journey to that of others, a.k.a. don't read other people's money diaries (at least for the time being). While you can learn quite a bit from how others handle their finances, it can also lead to insecurities, envy, and depression — feelings that may stop you from starting your emergency fund in the first place.
Set up a direct debit or standing order to transfer money directly into your emergency fund.
Always replace whatever comes out of your emergency fund and never use it unnecessarily.
If you suddenly come into money, whether through tax refunds, pay bonuses, cash gifts, or inheritance, put at least some of this extra cash in your emergency fund.
Need to get through an emergency without an emergency fund? TIME NextAdvisor has some tips.
Smart About Money has a free, detailed course on how to set up an emergency fund. In particular, it notes that if you're ever in a bad situation financially, you can call 2-1-1 from anywhere in North America to get advice on things like disaster and emergency help, housing and food assistance, employment and education opportunities, and more.

~ Quote of the day ~
Save and pay yourself first!
Tumblr media
We all have the idea that everything we earn is ours to keep, but if we really think about it we all have things we need to pay for in everyday life. We have to buy food, pay for clothing, purchase or rent a place to live and so on.  Much of what we earn is not ours to keep. If we really want to succeed, however, we must realize that a part of all we earn is ours to keep, and that we must pay ourselves first. If we don’t the money will quickly disappear and none of what we earn will be ours to keep. Tumblr media
Image: Four headlines and images from The Babylon Bee, a satirical conservative Christian online newspaper. Let’s take a look at how these jokes are neither funny nor compassionate.
1. Headline: “Alabama girl crushed as mother explains she may never have opportunity to kill offspring.”
While we’re discussing a bill that leaves no exemptions for rape or incest, it’s important to remember that some very young girls can become pregnant. If the young girl in this story had been living through abuse and sexual assault, and was now having her mother explain to her that she’d soon be dealing with pregnancy and childbirth as well, I can imagine that she would be crushed. This is already happening in other countries where abortion is illegal or heavily restricted. https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2019/03/latin-america-must-stop-forcing-pregnant-girls-into-deadly-situations/
2. Headline: “Close one: This baby was almost born into poverty but his mother killed him in the nick of time.”
Yes, poverty is a major reason for abortions, especially for mothers who are already taking care of other children. If you care about woman in poverty and want to give them a reason to chose to carry their pregnancies to term, they need affordable child care, good housing, food, and medical care. I wish “pro-life” groups advocated for these things. But as the world is, unplanned pregnancies are more likely to continue the cycle of poverty. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/women-denied-abortions-are-significantly-more-likely-to-experience-poverty-2018-01-18
This headline also seems to imply that the mother had a late term abortion, which is unlikely given the reason. Late term abortions are for wanted pregnancies in which something has gone terribly wrong. Parents mourn ending a pregnancy at this stage; don’t shame them. Here’s one such story: https://www.bustle.com/articles/180946-i-had-a-second-trimester-abortion-i-am-sick-of-hearing-politicians-opinions-about-it
3. Headline: “‘We are living in a totalitarian nightmare’ says protester freely without any fear of government retribution.” (with photo of protesters dressed in red dress and white hats like The Handmaid’s Tale)
This reasoning has been used to shame protesters on a variety of topics. I’m not sure why, as it seems better to speak up while someone still has the right to speak up. (Remember the famous quote from Martin Niemoller, “First they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew…”) The reminder that there are still many positive aspects to our government shouldn’t silence the criticism of the bad things. Totalitarian governments don’t happen in a day. They happen slowly, operating through fear and deception to take away freedoms and solidify power. The protesters in this image dress from The Handmaid’s Tale, a 1980s dystopian novel and recent Hulu TV series. The author, Margaret Atwood, made a point to only include details in her story that had happened somewhere in the world. https://historycollection.co/17-moments-in-history-that-inspired-the-handmaids-tale/
4. Headline: “Bunch of backward hicks in Alabama first to ban most barbaric practice know to man.”
I agree that mocking Alabamans is not a kind or helpful way to deal with this problem. However, many have been reasonably criticizing the lack of care this state has for its young children. These politicians are being hypocritical when they focus only on the well-being of fetuses and not the hungry children, foster children, and uneducated children. https://www.scarymommy.com/men-vote-alabama-abortion-ban/
Abortion is no more barbaric than any other surgical procedure. I realize it may seem gross, but so is a C-section (which is more dangerous than an abortion). I consider it barbaric that for being the richest most powerful nation on earth, America is lagging on maternal health care. https://www.amnestyusa.org/the-u-s-maternal-health-crisis-14-numbers-you-need-to-know/
So I continue to be confused by the values of conservatives (who say they care about families) and the values of Christians (who say they care about the poor).
