Solution 9 / Alexandria has me chewing on new cyberpunk ideas, so since I can make characters on a whim again, I made an Alexandrian-born bun

His name is Howlite, Howl for short, and he is a blind Reaper whose pact is with a digitized denizen of the Void. Said avatar lives in his regulator and helps him to see, though his vision is more akin to vector graphics much like this:

Howl's an obligate carnivore, and loves fried foods. His favorite being fried chicken.

He's a dancer by trade, and does street performances for extra cash.

an engine can have more that one avatar livery ‘saved’ at a time and can swap between them freely

a livery can be created from strong memories and emotion, as well as the physical paint job of the engine

for example; hiro still has his ‘lost engine’ livery because he was in a state of disrepair for so long at it solidified in his mind, he can’t forget the 50+ years he was in that state. where as oliver doesn’t have a ‘scarped engine’ livery because he doesn’t want to remember how close he came to the torch

an engine needs to remember a past livery in order to don it again

so far, james has the most available liveries at 4

so there's the "kiss me" and then the follow-up "kiss me as though i were cardan"

i honestly just read the first "kiss me" as balekin's own particularly cruel flavor of fae whimsy. like we know the folk are fickle and flightly and enjoy exercising their power over mortals (especially balekin, who has an established love of glamouring & abusing humans). i think a perfectly acceptable reading of this moment is just: he realized he could make her do it, and he had no reason not to. he's an egomaniac; he doesn't think power should be denied him; and whether jude will remember it or not, this is a way that he can satisfy that bent toward domination.

now, the "kiss me as though i were cardan" bit—you mention jude's logic in your post, but i think including the quote is helpful: "it is clearly a test. he wants to know how much control he has over me. but I think he wants to know something else, too, something about his brother." this strikes me as pretty sound logic from her.

we can speculate over what's meant by the latter half of her thought: is balekin trying to understand why cardan is obsessed with jude? is he trying to gauge whether she returns those feelings? is he trying to weigh the true power dynamic between jude and cardan (which, up to this point, has been very obscured to all of elfhame)? is he trying to "take" something (ick) from cardan? and/or is he acting out of some weird attraction to jude? i personally read it as a bit of a mixture of all these things, with #3 seeming the most plausible to me, while the last option honestly strikes me as the weakest rationale. balekin is presented as being motivated by power, so the thought that this is mostly a weird attraction thing just seems ooc.

I think one of the biggest mysteries of tfota universe is why the hell Balekin told Jude to kiss him. I gaped at my book for a full minute while reading that and at first followed Jude reasoning that he wanted to know something about his brother, but after a while I also started thinking Balekin was kinda envious of his supposedly weak and lazy younger brother that somehow managed to steal the crown he killed the whole royal family to get from right under his nose and he wanted to get back at Cardan and take whatever he could from him, even if it was some mortal girl. But what made the whole thing more strange was that Jude was “glamoured” and wasn’t supposed to recall that happening at all, as he didn’t order her to remember and pass on the information, so in the end it wouldn’t really affect Cardan in any way. And he gave her those pearl earrings that I initially thought were some kind of spying device but then Jude traded them for the walnut with Mother Marrow and everyone moved on with life, so I guess there was some very weird, creepy attraction to Jude involved? Someone get me Holly’s number I have QUESTIONS

okay okay okay I'm giving Black Mage another shot. I dropped it as soon as humanly possible back I think when I was starting HW to pick up GNB and literally never looked back. I was frustrated with it anf just didn't like it. Well here I am about 1 year later exactly and... guys BLM is actually fun. I'm only level 68, so I am not experiencing it at max level quite yet, but right now, it's pretty good. was a bit overwhelming to pick a class back up at 62 with a full spell bar and not a single clue what to do....!

was my problem before that i just didn't understand my rotation? possibly. maybe. potentially.
