RJ's Platinum Collection #21: The Quarry

Going by the fact that some of my previous Platinum's included Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures games, Detroit: Become Human, etcetera, I think it's no secret I love games where I can make choices that affect the plot. And Supermassive is really good at making horror games of that exact nature. So when The Quarry came out, I was super excited to play it and the Platinum for it!

Also, Brenda Song is in it. Enough said.

You get put in the shoes of nine teenagers - Ryan, Kaitlyn, Dylan, Emma, Abi, Jacob, Nick, Laura, and Max - as they spend one last night at the summer camp they've been working at in the woods. However, things go sideways real fast when the teens realize they're being stalked and hunted by a family of werewolves. So it's up to the player to help them all survive the night and make it out of the Quarry alive, with the assistance of a ghostly medium named Eliza in-between chapters.

I started by going into the game and doing a blind first playthrough. I figured that I had done such a good job with a blind playthrough in House of Ashes, I could probably do it again right? Well, unfortunately, that was not the case. By the time I finished the Epilogue of my first playthrough, I had only managed to keep three of the characters alive (Abi, Nick, and Max). Well, you win some, you lose some. At least I got 20 trophies still.

2/41: Forewarned Is Forearmed - Got a Tarot reading.

3/41: Prologue - Complete the Prologue.

4/41: The Truth Is Out There - Collected your first piece of evidence.

5/41: Chapter 1 - Complete Chapter 1.

6/41: It's All Coming Together - Found a matching clue.

7/41: Chapter 2 - Complete Chapter 2.

8/41: Chapter 3 - Complete Chapter 3.

9/41: Chapter 4 - Complete Chapter 4.

10/41: Chapter 5 - Complete Chapter 5.

11/41: Chapter 6 - Complete Chapter 6.

12/41: Chapter 7 - Complete Chapter 7.

13/41: Chapter 8 - Complete Chapter 8.

14/41: Reactionist - Activated 15 interrupts.

15/41: You're Breathetaking! - Passed five Don't Breath events.

16/41: Phlebotomy - Accepted the bite of a werewolf.

17/41: Mutually Assured - Laura and Travis killed each other.

18/41: Chapter 9 - Complete Chapter 9.

19/41: Chapter 10 - Complete Chapter 10.

20/41: Epilogue - Witnessed the Epilogue.

Onto my second playthrough! This time I used my knowledge of how I failed in the first playthrough, plus a few helpful guides, to make sure that all nine teens stayed alive. I also wanted to get all Tarot cards, all clues, and all evidence on this playthrough, but it turns out that is impossible because of a single path decision in Chapter 2. If you go one way, you find a Tarot card. If you go the other way, you find a Clue. However, you can't get BOTH on one playthrough. That is deeply irritating. I decided to do the Tarot cards, and eventually succeeded in my endeavor for an Everyone Survives playthrough.

21/41: Nick Of Time - Successfully took the fastest route to Nick.

22/41: Above The Law - Travis and Laura agreed to work together.

23/41: Decked Out - Found all Tarot cards.

24/41: The White Wolf - Killed Silas.

25/41: Family Matters - Killed all of the Hacketts.

26/41: Rough Night - Kept everyone alive.

I thought I had gotten all the evidence as well, but it turns out I missed one. However, I then discovered that it doesn't count if you just go to chapter select and pick up what you missed. I ended up having to do a third playthrough just to get the trophy for finding all ten pieces of evidence. Again, deeply irritating.

27/41: Conspiracy Theorist - Collected all evidence.

I then used chapter select to quickly replay Chapter 9 so that Ryan dies in the Hackett house, but Laura is able to kill Travis and escape so that she and Max reunite on the island. It was a cute little scene.

28/41: Should've Gone To The Motel - Reunited Laura and Max.

I then decided to just get a very easy trophy out of the way and start a movie mode playthrough. You don't need to actually finish it - just starting movie mode at all gets you the trophy.

29/41: Creature Feature - Started a movie mode playthrough.

I then started another new playthrough, this time going for making sure all nine characters died. I also went for the trophy for refusing Eliza's help in-between each chapter, since why bother learning the future if I already know everyone is gonna be dead?

30/41: Just A Flesh Wound - Saved a friend from infection.

31/41: Lovers' Quarrel - Nick killed Abi.

32/41: Hard Pass - Refused Eliza's help at every opportunity.

33/41: Hackett's Quarry Massacre - Killed everyone.

I then replayed Chapters 9 and 10 twice to get the trophies for having Kaitlyn be the sole survivor and for having Ryan be the sole survivor.

34/41: The Final Girl - Kaitlyn survived the night alone.

35/41: Last Man Standing - Ryan survived the night alone.

Now it was time for my fifth playthrough, this time going for the trophy for getting all nine characters turned into werewolves. You could do this on an Everybody Lives playthrough, but I just didn't think to do it at the time. Max, Laura, and Nick all get infected no matter what, but the other six require you to make specific choices in order to get them bitten. I also made sure to get all of the clues, and I also got the trophy for never missing in combat encounters as well.

36/41: Bizarre Yet Bonafide - Listened to the podcast.

37/41: Blood Pact - Infected every character.

38/41: Meddling Kids! - Collected all clues.

39/41: Peanut Butter Butterpops! - Never missed in a combat encounter.

Now I just had one more trophy, and it was for Jacob telling Emma the truth about how he sabotaged the car to keep them at camp for one more night. But in order to do that, you need Emma to be infected and then cured, but Jacob can't get infected at all. That did require me to do a partial playthrough of the game, but once I got the scene and unlocked the trophy, the Platinum was mine!

40/41: Nobody's Fool - Jacob told Emma the truth.

41/41: What Doesn't Kill You... - Achieved all the trophies!

I thought The Quarry was a great addition to Supermassive's collection - not as good as Until Dawn, but good in it's own right. However, I once again had to do multiple entire playthroughs of the game to get the Platinum, which I'm not the biggest fan of.

Guys, if you ever want to play a truly unhinged version of The Quarry, get yourself a freshly formatted PS4 and play it from the disc with no updates.

It’s got unfinished shading! It’s got deleted scenes! And my new favorite glitch of all time: I let Dylan keep his hand so he turned at the Scrapyard. Then I got the biggest jump scare I’ve ever had in the game because HE RANDOMLY APPEARED AT THE LODGE.

Yo, something is not right with that boy. 😭

Emma also appeared with Abi in the surveillance room cut scene despite also being a werewolf trapped in the basement. But that was way less ominous.

This is also my third run using the same save file with chapter select, so I’m guessing something got crossed and there are remnants of prior saves coming through? I was going to let it update but now I feel like I must keep playing it as-is to see just how broken I can make this game.

So in my current playthrough of Skyrim, my vampire dark elf married Vilkas

So I get home (the home site you buy at Falkreath, not an in-city house), bandits attack me, I find a letter on them saying Vilkas was kidnapped.

I am baffled, as he's a damn werewolf, but start my journey to save him. Have to walk to the cave he was taken to as it or places near it weren't discovered yet.

By the time I get close enough to see the cave, the mission claims to be completed. I still went through and killed all the bandits. And ya, he wasn't in there. So I get back home, and he's there.

But he's all messed up now. All bugged.

He walks backwards a lot.

Sometimes he'll be doing this weird walking-in-place where he's moving kinda weird (rolling his shoulders, legs moving like he's walking backwards, shaking his head left and right).

If he's in bed, I can't talk him up like any other characters. In fact, sometimes he'll just be laying there with his eyes open. And every time, he never gets out of bed unless I travel a bit a ways from my house and wait.

He hardly goes outside, and when he does he's just walking backwards between the house and the rocky wall I get my quarry stone, and continues until he's walking in place against a wall that juts out.

I can still talk to him as long as he's not in bed. Sell/buy things with him, get money, ask how the kids are, ask him to follow me. He's just different now.

So, safe to say that whatever or whoever was strong enough to kidnap a werewolf and hold him hostage for a bit, to some cave far from his home, traumatized him.

And I can't really fix him with console commands as it's on the PS4. So he's kinda stuck this way.

Also, fun fact, the VA for Vilkas (and yes, many other Skyrim characters) also voiced Shrek in a racing game. My dark elf is married to Shrek.

hi I may have accidentally been spamming you and I am so sorry <3 in my defense I just played devil in me after a bit of a break when I 100%d the quarry and now I'm vibrating about the whole thing. I own a ps4 and until dawn and I'm like ough. i have to ask tho what's ur onion on tDiM? I think it was... good but a little boring? like obviously it's fun, but at the same time I was in the edge of my seat the whole time like, trying to guess the twist and I just ... the twist is that he gets up? I guess. I know it's seemingly a part 1 but. Hm. Hmmm. I was hoping for Terminator style, slowly replacing all of his human parts with machines, like when the dog bites his hand in the end we were gonna see metal fingers. Anyway I am RAMBLING anyway bye

heheh, well hi yourself!!! ;)c i prooomise you weren't spamming - i always love seeing new names and faces popping up in my activity!!! and aw man, i know exactly what you mean about tdim. when i went back to it recently, i was pleasantly surprised to find i liked the lonnit entertainment crew more than i did my first time around, butttttttttttttt yeah, that ending though.

see, my main problem is that i'm a forensic/criminal psychologist, so i just spent the game on high alert like "I CAN SOLVE THIS ONE, BOSS!" and that. wasn't the right way to go, ha!!! seriously though, my first playthrough i spent most of the game thinking there were two possibilities with du'met that could be really cool, and that was (1) there was more than one of him, hence the silence, the mask, and the being everywhere at once; or (2) since we're shown he has an obsession with making animatronics out of bodies, well, maybe the du'met chasing after us is some kind of fancy - like you're saying, terminator - animatronic!!! both i think would've been creepy for different reasons.

alas. he just gets up. 😔 for sure i thought the game was a blast, i have yet to meet a supermassive game i don't like, and i loooooooved a lot of the visuals they used, just...idk i guess i hoped for some sort of crazy du'met CLUB where serial killers from near and far could get their kicks at the murder castle aslkdjfalksdjf HAHAH

I'm going to assume this is a genuine ask and NOT some kind of hate message for your benefit, anon.

First, I have played the games before - I had 1-4 on my kindle, I played each one a couple of times, I just didn't finish them. I also briefly played the first game on a college computer but it was obviously an import on a random website and not actually downloaded from Scott's site because I definitely wouldn't have been allowed to download horror video games to a college computer. But yeah, I played them briefly years ago.

The reason I didn't play the games properly before is because while I enjoy horror, playing horror games, especially with unscripted AI (eg. FNAF, Alien Isolation) makes my anxiety shoot up 100 levels to the point where I can't do anything but pause every 90 seconds and panic. I think I struggle more with horror games as playing games means you're the one doing it, there's an immersive/interactive aspect to it which makes it more terrifying than just sitting back and watching a movie. I can manage games like Until Dawn, Dark Pictures Anthology, The Quarry etc. better as it's all scripted and the most input I'm responsible for is pressing a button for a QTE. I think there's also an autism aspect to it, because things like TLOU games are also technically scripted encounters so after watching a playthrough/doing a playthrough myself, I know what to expect when I next play. So like once I know what to expect, I'm able to grow used to it and not be surprised, which isn't the case with the FNAF games.

Just because I didn't properly play the games myself before now, it doesn't mean I can't be a fan of the story. I've been watching YouTubers play most of the FNAF games ever since 2014, mostly Markiplier but sometimes other people too, and so I've been a fan of the lore through that. I don't think you need to have played a game yourself just to enjoy the story, and sometimes I've actually seen a YouTuber do a playthrough for a game that's made me decide to try it myself; sometimes I don't have the console for it (yet) and am hoping to try it later when I do have the right console (Until Dawn and DBH were my first two games on PS4, both of which I saw playthroughs of long before I owned a console and then decided to buy when I eventually got one)

Anyway, apart from anything else, I really loved the movie and it's inspired me to get my shit together to play the games, so... yeah. Hope that explains it!

As a Certified Gamer TM, here are my game recs by arbitrary category:

Shooting games for people bad at shooting games:

Far Cry 6 and Far Cry 5 (idk about the others, I just bought 3+4 but haven't played them yet) Cyberpunk 2099 is a bit harder, but in the end I was able to beat it so yeah. Rdr2 if you ABUSE the snakeyes function.

Games that made me sob fighting one of the hardest bosses:

Batman: Arkham Knight. I straight up couldn't see but I had gotten so good at the games that I somehow didn't die.

Games that YouTubers would play years ago that are fun to play:

Doki Doki Literature Club, 60 Seconds!, Subnautica, Papers Please, the binding of Issac

Story games that I actually fucked up in expecting them to be easy:

Detroit: Become Human, Life is Strange, Telltale The Walking Dead, Stray

Games for casuals:

Cattails, unpacking, slime rancher, spiritfarer

Games I was told were for casuals but actually were NOT:

Terraria, Starbound(can be for casual if you cheat.), phasmophobia

Games my computer couldn't run for more than five minutes but I liked what I saw:

Baldur's gate 3, the quarry (how my pc ran RDR2 but not this idfk), destiny 2 (seriously wtf how could I play cyberpunk but not destiny 2), the Outer Worlds

Oldass games:

Spore, skyrim, VIVA PIÑATA (this is abandonware btw), LOZ wind waker, Portal, half-life 1 and 2, the old tomb raider that came out like 2012 or whatever

Games my dad plays and therefore I inherently trust his taste:

No Man's Sky(I tried it it was cool), Horizon Zero Dawn (I saw him play a bit, it looked cool), the final fantasy games, left 4 dead 2 (actually my dad and my step-dad both play this so it's like double dad-ed)

Games I like but am too lazy to come up with a category for:

Spiderman ps4 games, the Arkham games, Gotham Knights (fuck you, it might be repetitive but at least there is Jason Todd. I will take what I can get.)

Neir: Automata. I could not say everything I felt about this game because it would make this post a million miles long. But. I love it so so so much it's so good I spent so many fucking hours on it getting every single ending I love it I love it but it's also hard fair warning but that's okay because if you know what to do it's easy I love it so so so much
