Do you have any head canons for your favorite Ace Attorney characters? (Basically free pass to rant to your hearts content 💙)
Hi anon if you're still out there you sent me this ask nearly six months ago and then I never really needed an excuse to rant about a topic. but now I do and I feel bad for letting this sit so long so here's a bunch of very specific headcanons about the relationships between the protagonists and assistants.
Phoenix and Maya: the Dynamic Duo. The Best Friends. Canonically Maya is the most important person in Phoenix's world in JFA (and of course Trucy ends up taking that position but Maya is always up there in a comfortable second place.) They'd die for each other within a few days of having met. I think they're both fundamentally lonely people and the shared tragedy of losing Mia trauma bonded them for life. Insert elaborate headcanon of Phoenix not really having many lasting friendships and just latching on to all the people who are nice to him (hence switching careers to meet a guy he hasn't known since he was nine) and also Maya growing up as the heir to the Kurain Channeling Technique and not really having anyone her age to hang around with. They are undoubtedly Siblings but I don't think they're Siblings in the same way as like Miles and Franziska are Siblings. I don't think they'd necessarily introduce each other as their siblings (... which I don't think Edgeworth and Franziska do either but that's a whole other long dramatic topic) but they do secretly consider each other their annoying younger sibling. Like canonically at least Maya does. They have weekly gossip sessions which also has canon support. They'll make fun of each other all day and then die for each other in a crisis. Their dynamic means the world to me. I could go on for a very long time.
... sidenote that I don't consider Franziska an assistant at all but I want to briefly throw in some headcanons for them in here because I think Franziska Hates Phoenix's Guts but after JFA develops some respect for him and throughout Bridge and post T&T she does actually like him (platonically, just to be very clear,) but doesn't know how to express that so she just acts the same way she always does and Phoenix is convinced that she despises him for like the rest of his life or at least until Edgeworth tells him otherwise.
Phoenix and Ema: I don't think they're as close as Phoenix and Maya. I think that like they can go years without talking to each other but then when they're both in the same place and hang out they are like the best of friends for a week. Ema came to visit in the middle of the 7yg and she and Phoenix went around town and partied (or whatever social things people do I don't have a social life) and confided about all their troubles but it wasn't until Ema left that Phoenix realized he completely forgot to tell her about Trucy hence why Ema had no idea when she came back in AA4. I think that's funny.
Phoenix and Pearl: there's lots of parent trauma here on Pearl's part. Insert elaborate headcanons here about Pearl partially being so fixated on Phoenix and Maya being a romantic thing because she's subconsciously substituting them as parents in a perfect nuclear family that isn't horribly traumatizing. I don't think Phoenix ever considers her his *daughter* daughter not like Trucy but definitely if he hadn't been partially taking care of her throughout JFA and T&T he'd be even more unprepared when taking on Trucy. Also probably Pearl has some degree of jealousy at first with this but I think they sort it out early on in the 7yg.
Edgeworth and Kay: You Know This One. They are father-daughter but I don't think they ever admit it. like I think Kay after losing her prosecutor father in a horrible murder and then like took a break from school to avenge his death and then went to find this other prosecutor who helped nearly catch the murderer the first time and also says things that often remind her of her father kind of went "oh this is a dad now" but the trauma of losing her dad means she doens't. fully. like you know there's that scene at the end of aai2-4 where Miles hands her the promise notebook and it flashbacks to Byrne with the promise notebook and their hands are overlapped so it's like you can't see Byrne's face and it's an extremely clear Parallel of these two people occupying similar spaces in Kay's mind, but of course Kay doesn't fully embrace this because she does love Byrne a lot and doesn't ever really. move on from him or ever want to think she's replacing him in her mind. which she isn't, but it's something she's scared of. And obviously Edgeworth has a lot of father trauma too. I can't see this man readily accepting that he's a father in any way I think he just represses it but he does like want to protect Kay and make sure she grows up safe and eats her vegetables. and someday if he does manage to sort out father trauma I think he'd recognize he sees her in a daughterly way but by this time Kay is well into adulthood and he thinks she doesn't really need that anymore. she does and I think in a narumitsu world where edgeworth adopts trucy it's going to cause a lot of complicated feelings for her. it's very elaborate. another thing I could probably write way too much on we're going to move on
Edgeworth and Ema: It's so cute when Edgeworth is all polite to her because she's his boss's younger sister. I think he was nice to her when he was prosecuting the Joe Darke case and Ema (deeply traumatized suddenly being ignored by her sister and fourteen years old) gets this gigantic puppy crush on him because he's like just distant enough to be safe to have a crush on and is older but not too old and is also very gay. which she doesn't know yet but it contributes. anyways when she grows up it's more of a professional idolization sort of thing instead. edgeworth never knows about the crush thing because he's oblivious until ema and kay get married and kay makes a joke about ema using her to seduce her not-dad and ema nearly divorces her two hours after getting married
Apollo and Trucy: siblings by blood and in heart. Even when they don't really know each other well Apollo was sobbing when he thought Trucy got kidnapped which was really sweet. I think Trucy takes advantage of him not really knowing how she works a lot in the beginning but eventually he grows wise to her tricks and doesn't fall for them (as often). He considers her a sister figure long before he knows they're related. Definitely for most of Trucy's life the only one who really understood her was Phoenix and I think it would be sweet if eventually Apollo learned to see behind her facade sometimes too. Also I'm shaking the ending of soj really hard. Umm what else I don't always adhere to this headcanon but I think it would be very funny if Trucy knew the whole time that she and Apollo were half-siblings. Like she has the picture of Thalassa with the bracelets, and she knows Perceive power is a Gramarye thing, I think she knows. She just doesn't know how to break the news to her dad.
I could here add in Athena but I don't consider her an assistant and I probably should add in Rayfa but I can't remember enough of SOJ honestly. Also I want to add in that despite the lack of canon interactions I think Apollo and Maya teaming up would be fun. Anyways DGS time.
Ryunosuke and Susato: by the transitive property of siblings these two are siblings. But to be perfectly honest I don't see them as siblings in the same way I'd like see Phoenix and Maya as siblings and definitely not as Edgeworth and Franziska are siblings. I think they're Family but I can't really fit them into a neatly defined box. Uhh I could get into some specifics but I don't want to put a bunch of spoilers in here I guess I could make a separate post later. But I think they also really bonded over shared trauma throughout like the whole series and I think they remain really good friends for the rest of their lives, and eventually they run a law firm together. She gets to be Auntie Susato to Ryu's eventual kid(s) which I think she adores because I feel like Susato really likes kids even though I don't see her having any of her own... maybe adoption but my elaborate post-canon Susato headcanons aren't really solidified on that front.
I could probably go into Ryu's relationships with Sholmes and Iris because they're technically considered assistants to some degree but this is long enough already, I want to avoid spoilers, and Susato's really the main one.

Jason Voorhees x Reader || Oneshot
Tumblr media
Title: I Wouldn't Fit In That World Anymore. I Want This One
Notes:
·         This is post FVSJ and also links to the comic where Bubba and Jason meet ^^
·         I just really wanted some Jason hugs today!!
Plot: Lots and lots of Jason fluff. A liiitle angst concerning a ‘normal life’, but the reader wants Jason. So really it just makes way for more fluff!
Warnings: None that I can think of
~~~
 “So, um… Jason?” Okay, enough of this. I can’t just sit here and weave a basket with Jason sitting right across from me, and not say it anymore. It’s a skill, to be able to guilt trip someone without even knowing it, without even the ability to speak, but Jason has it. He looks up from his carving, which is starting to look a bit like a fish now. I look back down at my basket-in-progress and run a hand over the prickly, smooth strands. We like creative, hands-on activities, we do. “So, um… “Ah, repetition. Intelligent. “The other day… well, you know how I told you a guy was annoying me lately? Talking to me a lot at work and trying to tag along with me to work outings and shopping trips I told him about?”
Of course, he remembers and makes a nodding movement, focused on me. I look back down at the basket again. “Well, he uh… I can’t believe I didn’t notice it before, he always sits way too close to me but I just figured he had personal space issues, you know? Like Bubba. But.” I take a deep breath in through my nose, slowly. Raising my shoulders high and look disapprovingly at my basket. “It turns out he liked me… as, more then a friend. You know.” Like how you feel about me. But, of course I don’t need to say that. He’s intelligent, he knows. You can tell by the way he stills even more then he already was, with his not-breathing and all. He doesn’t freak out or anything though, doesn’t move to get up and pick up his machete, or clench his fists. He waits for more information from me, and I’m thankful for it. “And he asked me out.”
I peak up at him to see his reaction, hoping to not catch his gaze because then I know I’ll panic and start talking nonsense and in this situation, which is telling a killer that loves you that someone else tried something with you, would be a huge mistake. With Jason, its much better to be clear and simple. And repetitive. “I said no. I didn’t want to be with him, because he’s nothing like you and I love you. Not that anyone, even a carbon copy could beat you out, at all. But… I said no. I didn’t have any interest. I love you. I just thought you might want to know, cuz we’re in a… a mature, relationship and all.”
His stiffness goes away after a few more agonising moments of silence, and staring-into-eyes and he turns back to his carving. After brushing away some dust with his thumb, he looks back up at me and nods, lifting the awkwardness from the air, but not from my heart. I still have more to say… but I’m still debating saying it. For a few more minutes, maybe an hour, we go back to what we were doing. Him creating, me methodically weaving the straw and planning out what I would say, if I said it.
As he gets up, having finished his fish and put in the ground between us so he can stare at it for a little longer, deciding if it needed anymore touches or maybe imagining it being a real fish, or maybe thinking something completely separate from sea life because who knows what goes through Jason Voorhees’ mind, I move and nearly call him back to say what I was planning. I even let go of the basket and reach for his hand, but I stop myself a millisecond later and jolt back to an awkward position holding the finished handle of my creation. My heart beating fast and hard in my chest.
I want to be honest with him… and I do trust him. I trust him with my life, and my random thoughts, and so much more… But above all I trust his loyalty… that often times is in the middle of a Venn diagram of loyalty and possession. I know, if I tell him this last part that’s been on my mind, there is a good 70 percent chance that he’ll take it the wrong way and do something rash, like when he went to Manhatten. He’s capable of anything, really, and that is what I’m afraid of.
Or… well, that’s 50 percent of what I’m logically worried about. The other half of me is more concerned with his feelings. It would kill me to hurt them. Jason’s like a huge puppy and telling him this might be like kicking this giant puppy.
Deciding to wait and think on it for a little bit more, at least until my heart stops beating so fast that my fingers shake and my skin goes pale, Jason safely makes it to the kindling and starts cutting it up for the fire later tonight.
When its about 7, and the fire is lit and bright in the front yard-or… what I call the front yard. Really, it’s the clearing in front of his cabin, - and finally push myself towards him to say it. I leave the cabin and find him on the porch, watching the flames. They dance in his eyes, and I interrupt his thoughts by sitting comfortably, sideways in his lap and leaning my head onto his shoulder. Immediately he looks down, assesses the situation silently and moves his arms to make me more comfortable. I sigh. “So, you remember what I told you earlier?”
I feel him nod, above me. But instead of looking at each other, we look at the fire. Its so hot that even from here I can feel it, and its so bright that the orange light touches our forms. “There was more that I wanted to tell you. Because… well, I like to tell you things. And because you deserve to know.” I turn to wrap my arms securely around him and press my face into his jacket, probably alerting him to the fact that this new thing might be bad but I don’t care. I definitely don’t look up when I feel him look down at the top of my head. “I thought about saying yes.” I whisper. “For a moment, I pictured a life with him. Or, really, any normal guy with a… a nine to five job and a tie who wants 2.5 kids and a picket fence.” He’s so nice to cuddle. So round and strong and cuddly. It makes this easier to push out. “How I could… I could say yes, and still get what I thought I would get all my life before meeting you. A normal family, with people like me. To raise a baby the way I always said I would, not like my parents. And for a second it… it was exciting. I even half wanted it.”
He goes stiff again, and I nearly panic again. I want to tell him immediately that I’m kidding, its all a joke! I would never want anything apart from this life here with you, I’m sorry!! But again, I know panicking would be a bad idea. And I’m past blabbering in the face of danger, at this point. Being in love with a monster.
“But then the moment passed over me, Jason.” Its nice to say his name. Makes everything feel right. Puts it all in perspective. This is Jason. He’s the reason I transformed my life into this, and I wouldn’t take back that decision for anything. He is everything. “Second of all, I realised: I met freaking Leatherface, and he’s the most adorable pseudo-cousin-in-law a girl could ask for. I fought Freddy Fucking Krueger. I’m in love with you so much I’m beyond repair. I wouldn’t fit in that dream life anymore. In no universe would it be enough next to this.” I’ve met the darkness, and I could never go back. It’s weird, I’ve never been more comfortable anywhere. “But the first thought that came to me, stopping me in my tracks was you, of course. What else, honestly.” I tighten my grip on him, and feel his big hand slowly touch my back, nearly the width of my back. “I couldn’t live without you.”
“I never understood what people meant when they described their partners as their worlds before but during this moment, I figured it out. I realised that that is how I was feeling about you. I didn’t even know it. But you are, you’re my world. And that is as complicated and as simple as that.”
He doesn’t utilise a moment this time, and just hugs me to his body, enwrapping me in his arms and his chest entirely and leaning forward so his knocks against my head gently. I take this as a ‘I feel the same’, and giggle, enjoying our cuddle.
“Oh, sweetheart. I made a whole little speech there. I serenaded you, do you feel overwhelmed??” I slightly tease, but my grip back on him is too tight I’m sure, for him to take me seriously. He still sighs heavily into my shoulder though, making me giggle.
I give him a little kiss of the closest bit of skin available to me, the side of his head and secure my arms around him again, settling into this, smiling. I guess we’re making a night of it now.
You made me ship Lunya T.T but as a Allison stan this kind made me ship her with Diego... headcanon about the neglected couples? :O
Tbh, there are a lot of ship possibilities that could be seen as neglected couples since there are 7 main people who could be thrust into about 21 ship dynamics - not counting poly ships and not counting ships that aren’t sibling ships - like Klave or Vanya/Helen or even still incest stuff like Gracexthe sibs.
So you see, endless possibilities but there are only about 4 ships who are really popular? Klave, Kliego, Fiveya...maybe Horrance? And even then, most Horrance or Fiveya shippers still see their ship as a rarepair because compared to Klave or Kliego it more or less is.
Which may have to do with the fact that if you’re an anti but wanna ship something you have pretty limited options, so Klave it is.
So you probably want some Allison/Diego hcs but I’m gonna do a little more because Allison is less popular in general so her ships are not that often talked about.
I’ll leave out Alluther because I did some OTP asks about them, but y’all know I ship them because it’s the sweet story of childhood sweethearts meeting again and falling in love all over again and it’s just...*sighs dreamily* lots of possibilities.
Allison/Diego: A fun ship! At first you’d probably say: ‘We have a pretty much functional adult with a child and a guy who eats raw eggs to seem edgy’ so it’s easy to fall into a Hermione/Ron relationship interpretation where you have a dumbass and someone done with their shit - and I can see it being like that occasionally but not always!
When I think about them I mostly think about teasing. They totally do some competitive shit just because they wanna best each other but where that same dynamic could quickly turn into arguments for Luego I can see it staying mostly light-hearted with Allison/Diego.
(Quick question, do they have a ship name? Asking for tagging purposes).
And Allison would take none of Diego’s shit. Oh, Diego has one of his mood swings and tries to be an emo boy and pull that ‘I don’t need anyone shit’? Boy, Allison is a single mother who’s been through a divorce already, she doesn’t have time for your angst.
Lmao, Allison being like: “We’ll sit down and talk about our feelings now” after a fight and Diego complains the whole time but sits down like a good boy.
Also, Allison would do the vigilante thing from time to time because she may pretend to be an adult and above that kinda stuff but it’s fun and they definitely argue over who took out more people.
Give me that power couple pls.
Allison/Klaus: One of my favourite ships! Can be real whole-hearted or angsty depending on the angle you take.
Like, Allison who keeps busting Klaus out of prison with her status and her rumours and who pays for his rehab stay every single time, at first still telling him that she’s gonna fix him with that Hollywood ‘You can do it’ attitude - slowly getting more and more annoyed by her no-good brother, feeling like a babysitter - maybe even refusing to keep indulging his brother, to keep giving him money he’s only gonna use on drugs anyway.
And Klaus who despises Allison’s glamour lifestyle, her polished image and her nuclear family - we could even throw some biphobia in there because Klaus remembers their talks about how pretty girls are but Allison pretends that never happened because it wouldn’t do her career much good. (Just like being seen with her junkie brother, “isn’t that why we can’t meet anywhere that isn’t a back alley? Why you can’t talk to me without sunglasses and a hat? Why you keep your voice down even when I scream at you?”)
Plus, some added angst: Patrick telling Allison to just drop her brother already, he’s just gonna self-destruct and take her with him and that creates tension between the two of them, could even be one of the many reasons for their divorce.
And just like that, Allison loses all of it. And Klaus is there with a cheap bottle of Tequila, already high and grinning at her: “Welcome at the bottom, sister dearest!”
*insert the 30k story about the two of them slowly learning to understand each other and finally being able to heal - with the help from the other but also because they wanna change for themselves. I vote for added bed sharing and sleepovers and them doing each other’s nails but also them fucking once and not talking about it because they were both really hurt and not really thinking when it happened but it staying in the back of their minds until they realize that they could actually work together*
This got angstier than it was supposed to be, sorry! I love them, I swear!
Allison/Five: Probably the least popular one out of all the Allison ships!
I have to admit that I don’t think about Five ships much? Which probably has to do with the whole child body thing but I’m not opposed to ships involving them! (Especially when they’re enby, y’all know my brand).
Allison/Five would be that kinda snob couple who knows they are superior to you and they’re not above showing you. Lots of quibs, lots of sarcasm.
But also probably one of the more mature ones? I can see Allison being unsure at first because Five is- no, looks like a kid and who knows when that will get fixed? And maybe it’s because she’s a Mum but sometimes she just treats them like a child and Five hates it.
(Five probably has to do a lot of courting before Allison considers a relationship. Which is bullshit. They both know there’s tension there, why the fuck is Allison drawing back from that? Just because Five’s trapped in this body? Does Allison think they want that?)
Five aggressively flirting while Allison to herself is like: ‘Hoe, don’t do it.’ but eventually giving in.
And of course, depending on your take of Five’s body, things are gonna be weird. Like, a popular hc is to have Five in a 20ish body but even then, just imagine the headlines.
Allison Hargreeves, world star, dating a guy 10 years younger!!! Is she getting over her divorce with a boy toy?
(Not to mention the pseudo-incest part).
They’d get a lot of shit I’d say.
And Five would be furious about that. How dare they imply that their relationship with Allison is just some fling? They’ll show them. So they make a game out of proving the paparazzi wrong. Makes it their mission to treat Allison as right as possible.
(Also I have feelings about the whole Five - Claire - Allison thing. I mean, just Five mentioning wanting to meet Claire? Knowing her name? I am soft).
And I know I am rambling a little but whether you think Patrick was/is a nice guy or not (I personally think he is), I can see Allison being so obsessed with seeming flawless and having the picture perfect family - as opposed to her own family - that she felt like she could never really be herself? Like she had to hide a lot of her more ‘ugly’ sides to be desirable.
And Five doesn’t care about that shit. Five also doesn’t care about courtesy. Five will jump into her room at the beginning of their relationship, watch her scramble around to try and change into something nicer than her pajamas and apologize for her messy hair and her pimples- “I just woke up, I didn’t have time to put on my make up, can’t you come back later Five?”
And Five’s like: “You look like someone who just woke up. Your hair is sweaty and you have a pretty big pimple on your nose. Also, your morning breath is horrible. Can we cuddle now?”
(Five is the first partner Allison burps in front of. It’s pretty freeing).
Five on the other hand has someone they can be insecure in front of. Where they don’t have to pretend they know all the answers. Be dismissive with. (They’re trying to let all of their siblings in but it’s a process, okay?)
I’m sorry, I’ll stop now but I gave myself feelings.
Allison/Ben: This feels like an easier couple. Like, more normal, lmao. Just a couple of adopted sibs falling in love the old-fashioned way - after one of them gets brought back to live and they survive a near apocalypse their sister caused.
I like to spin some tale of being in love as kids (like with Alluther) but for me the two of them really work better as just being friends as kids and then once Ben comes back, Allison realizes how much she missed him and she’s like “What is this???? Am I....crushing on him??” (imagine the Beauty and the Beast song where they realise they like each other while playing in the snow).
Just...some good and nice slowburn. Maybe some added angst with Ben thinking Allison is confusing her relieve of him being alive with being in love or believes she’s looking for a rebound after her divorce.
Or maybe he believes he’s just touch-starved and that’s why he clings to Allison?
(Imagine the two of them chilling at the mansion together, just picking up where they left off, pretending to still be kids. Allison all excitedly showing Ben what he’s missed during all those years and what he only gets to experience now - let’s be honest this mostly boils down to Allison making him eat a bunch of stuff, not even waiting until he takes a bite himself but just putting it in his mouth because she wants to see whether he likes it).
(I hc that Allison can’t cook for shit but Ben has no real frame of reference unless you count blurry memories of what food used to taste like so it’s heaven to him and Allison is giddy).
They’re just cute, okay?
Allison/Vanya: ANGST. GAY ANGST. I mean, the guilt over what happened, Allison feeling like it’s her fault and treating Vanya all nice but Vanya stilll flinches everytime she sees the angry red scar across Allison’s throat. Plus, if Allison still can’t speak and will never speak again and Vanya tries her hardest to learn ASL with her so she doesn’t have to write down everything all the time.
Young Allison/Vanya with Vanya realising she’s queer and sneaking glances at Allison and immediately feeling guilty because she shouldn’t be looking, it’s wrong and dirty and Allison will hate her and-
Whereas she is completely missing the way Allison is looking back.
Also this ship can easily turn toxic with either of them - or both - getting overbearing after all that happened. And tbh, that’s just as exciting to write/think about.
That’s all I got for now but you’re welcome to talk more Allison/Allison ships with me!
Two Halves
The two kingdoms of Sanq and Lin were at war for years; a conflagration involving magic, armies and political murder. The conflict left both nations devastated and strewn with refugees. The king of Sanq finds his infant son, lost at birth, among the death and the ruin, a miracle he barely dared to hope for.  But there isn't just one boy, there are two, clinging together like two halves of a whole that cannot be separated.  Decades later, the truth behind that second child’s existence will put a hole in the world, or possibly save it.
Because I got invited to do this by @raevenlywrites & @merigreenleaf to do a little roundup post for this OC Pride Parade and I can't say no to that. <3 So, let's kickstart the first crew for this little roundup!
ICARUS AT MIDNIGHT //
a weird story about three twentysomething year old insomniacs that attend an informal late night support group for magical burns. because ‘we can talk, we can plan and we can fix our burns for the better! o:<!’
Oleander Wormwood. Reserved and snarky, Oleander keeps much of his past close to his chest. It’s just easier to assume he grew up in a cabbage patch than to try to get any information out of him. He joins Icarus mostly to shut up his pseudo-brother and stays because he finds Kingcup entertaining as all heck (and the Small Hours Diner has amazing mozzarella sticks too, oh ether!). He spends a good chuck of his spare time working as a freelance delivery kid and searching thrift stores for the kitschiest shit he can find. /thumbs up
Oleander is pansexual too. He’s attracted to all kinds of folks and doesn’t much feel any reliable difference between those people. Like be kind, bright and respectful when he says no and life will be good. He’s not typically big into dating, preferring experiences and one night stands until Thyme enters his life and then Ha Ha Ha!. He’s definitely more sexual than romantic and I’m sure if he ever bother to think about it, he’d might come to the conclusion he's a bit grey-aromantic too. But, Olea doesn’t think that much about his sexuality so he’s just pan! c:
He’s also agender too. He doesn't feel much of an attraction to any gender, it's pretty 'whatever' to him and he only uses masculine pronouns out of apathy and old habits he doesn't any intense need to change. If others want to use something else, he's pretty chill with it.
Thyme Oxeye. Silly and empathetic, Thyme walks the tight line between being a blessed saint and a disaster of a trashcan fire. He moved to Dead Leaves by himself a few years prior to Icarus' start, supporting himself via lots of odd jobs while deeply missing his family back home. Why he doesn't just go back is a mystery, Thyme only says that he can't but he starts attending Icarus in a desperate hope it'll help him out in that regard though. c:
Thyme is very happily bi too, probably sporting a cute little bi pride of his jacket because he just loves his sexuality. Bad puns and finger guns, amirite? :D While he tends to have a slight preference for femme-leaning folks, he'll (awkwardly) flirt with anyone that catches his eyes ...when he can work up the nerve to do so. Anxieties are fun! Because of that, he hasn’t dated much in the past and the few times he has, they’re been very intense relationships because that’s all Thyme seems to know how to do queue that boy falling absurdly heads over heels in love with Oleander because he’s Everything Oh Ether. He’s also cis. c:
Datura Kingcup. Passionate and stubborn, Kingcup doesn't do anything lightly. She was a child prodigy in terms of magical theory and practice, earning praise from many of the Academia Circles. Until one day, she suddenly quit magic cold turkey and started working as an archivist in Dead Leaves' Clove Library. It's anyone's guess why, but given she's the sole founder of Icarus at Midnight... Well. It seems pretty obvious in retrospect now, yeah?
Kingcup is also very gay and when it comes to dating, she’s a bit of a disaster too. Since she’s been so very goal-focused so most of her life, love has been pushed aside because that’s only so many hours in the day (and she has plans for them all already!). She’s definitely had a few girlfriends in the past, nothing intense but still dearly special to her because this girl is such a closeted romantic, even more so than Thyme. She wants to find the love of her life, but really doesn't have the spare time to commit to it either. It's just kinda sad. :c
She does eventually get a crush on one of the employees of the Small Hours Diner where Icarus meets and it’s awkward and bad and she regrets all the times she made fun of Oleander’s crush of Thyme in front of Thyme because that boy is frickin’ relentlessly getting about his revenge on her in front of Volkamenia. :‘l Friendship is a wonderful thing, let’s just say that! She’s also cis too.
Honorable Mentions! Oleander’s pseudo-brother Daed is definitely asexual. Half of the Small Hours Diner staff is some shade of queer (Volkamenia herself is trans and bi and her & Thyme looove bonding over bi memes when she’s working). Kingcup’s sister Atropa is in a poly relationship with two guys too and one day, I wanna write a short about them because they’re all sorts of fun and I love all them dearly?? The Icarus ‘verse too, because I just wanted to write a place that wasn’t super heteronormative and it’s been fun exploring that. c:
Random MCU Crossover Idea#62973: Gilmore Girls
Saw a few Gilmore Girls posts today and my brain immediately went into crossover mode. And then I saw a post on Buzzfeed with things/storylines people hated and I was like, yeah, I hated that too. And I hated AYITL, and I can’t bring myself to rewatch the original seasons because Emily is SO awful, and I can’t remember why I liked the show so much originally, and yet...
The day Tony’s high school girlfriend, Maya, showed him the little plus sign on the cheap plastic pregnancy test his world was turned upside down, and hers was pretty much over. As Maya grew to resent him and everything about their situation, Tony comes to  the realisation that he doesn’t want the life their parents are planning for him, and the moment he holds his daughter, Darcy, in his arms he knows he doesn’t want that life for her either.
As soon as Darcy can be seperated from her mother (Maya only too happy to sign over her parental rights), Tony packs their things and takes the busted up hot rod his father had bought him for his 15th birthday (promising they’d do it up together but Howard never did find the time) and drives all night until it finally breaks down outside Angie’s Diner in Stars Hollow, run by Angie and her partner Peggy.
They take him in and talk the owner of the Independance Inn into let him stay in a small renovated shed on the grounds in return for doing repairs around the place. Whilst completely overwhelmed with the path he’s chosen, Tony does his best to build a life for his daughter, bussing tables at Angie’s and working odd jobs around town with Darcy in tow, and eventually moving into the apartment above Angie’s when she and Peggy buy a nice house on Maple Street.
He saves every penny he can and by the time Darcy’s ready to start school he has enough to get a loan from the bank (co-signed by Angie and Peggy) and buys a small garage across town. A small part of him would have loved to put his name on it but he thinks of his family name emblazoned across hospital wings and skyscrapers and decides that “Stars Hollow Auto Repairs” works just fine.
Darcy is amazing; sweet, funny, smart as a whip, and his best friend. She’s a little more reserved socially than he was at her age, even more so after puberty hit her like a truck, but he wouldn’t change a thing about her.
He used to worry about the gap in their lives where his parents and Maya should be, but every time they suffer through a holiday dinner at his parent’s mansion, or Maya blows into town for a weekend, he’s reminded that he made the right choice. And they’ve collected a pretty amazing family for themselves anyway.
Peggy and Angie are the best pseudo parents a guy could ask for. They’re semi retired now and spend a lot of the year travelling the world, leaving the diner in the mostly capable hands of Clint and Scott, a few other strays they’d taken in over the years.
Ms Natasha runs the local dance studio and has a hand in most of the art/drama events in town. She’s constantly changing her hair (favouring blood-of-her-enemies red), knows everything about everyone, and actively encourages the rumour that she’s in witness protection, on the run from the Russian mob.
Coulson, town selectman and owner of the local market, is more of a frenemy than friend. He likes things just so and is a stickler for the rules, and encourages the townspeople to uphold Star Hollows quaint and old fashioned aesthetic. He and Tony butt heads frequently, and though Coulson thinks Tony’s now gleaming hot rod, with its loud engine and flame decals, ruins the towns image, he’s still the only person Coulson would trust to work on his baby, Lola - a cherry red Corvette that totally doesn’t gel with the aesthetics iether, Tony would constantly point out, and Coulson would argue that he never drives it *in* town.
The ironically named Happy, head chef at the Independance Inn, is one of Tony’s closest friends, and he visits Happy’s kitchen at least three times a week for lunch and to generally making a nuisance of himself, much to the annoyance of inn manager, Pepper. Pepper was the first friend he made in Stars Hollow, then just a maid at the inn who followed the sounds of a baby crying to find the teenaged father struggling to get his daughter to sleep. She helped him get Darcy settled and then stayed up talking with him until he wound down enough to fall asleep himself. During those first few weeks she even went so far as to take Darcy, safetly nestled in amongst the clean towels, with her while she cleaned rooms when it was clear that Tony needed a few more hours sleep. There’s some mutual attraction there but nothing’s ever come of it. For those first few years Tony was single minded in getting his shit together and looking after Darcy, and then Pepper was dating someone, or he was. Their timing just never seemed to be right.
The day Darcy gets accepted into Shield Academy is one of the best days of their lives, until Tony sees the tuition fees. After exhausting all his options, and being laughed out of more than one bank, Tony does something he’d always promised himself he’d never do. Gathering every ounce of courage he has, and discarding his useless pride, he drives to his parents house, Darcy’s acceptance letter in hand, tail between his legs, and rings the doorbell.
"Tony? My goodness, this is a surprise. Is it Easter already?”
Darcy almost refused to go to Shield Academy, causing her and Tony’s long overdue annual arguement (usually it happens in July when it’s just too damn hot out and tempers are frayed). She’d miss her best - and only - friend, Daisy, she’d said. Though she’d be okay with getting fewer death glares from Mrs May, a strict and imposing healthy living enthusiast, who loathes technology and makes her daughter use the local library computers for her school work (but for never more than an hour a day). Darcy would hate to be there when Mrs May found out about the candy bars Daisy has stashed under the floorboards, the various parts of Daisy’s home-made computer hidden around her room, or the fact that her daughter hacks her neighbours wifi regularly and with great ease.
And then there was this boy, Steve. He was new to town, just moved from Brooklyn with his mom. He worked at Coulson’s market and was cute, and nice, and didn’t stare at her boobs, or make fun of her sweaters, or her glasses, or the books she carried everywhere. And when he smiled at her it made her want to do stupid things, like stay at her old school in case he decided to ask her out.
But she did go to Shield, and she did get to date Steve - the “perfect first boyfriend”. And after Steve there was Ms Natasha’s younger cousin, Bucky, another New York native supposedly running from the mob as well. He was dark, broody, smarter than anyone gave him credit for, and was rarely seen without his ancient leather jacket, the left sleeve seeming held together with duct tape. He’s a bit of a mess but slowly grows out of it, popping back into Darcy’s life at random intervals causing her head and heart a lot of confusion. And then in college there’s Loki. He’s smart, fun, maybe a little bit arrogant at times, but he’s from a wealthy and influential family - her grandparents adore him on that alone. Tony, not so much.
Tony’s dating history isn’t much better. There was Bruce, whose shy and awkward smile got him all twitterpated, but he was Darcy’s science teacher, which made their entire time together awkward and weird. He has an illadvised fling with Christine Everhart, one of his father’s head-of-something-or-other department and the daughter of one of his father’s former business partners. When things get even more complicated between their family’s companies and Christine tells him that she would have to sue Howard to get out of the mess she’s been dropped in, Tony surprises himself by siding with his father. And he and Pepper eventually try dating, but as usual their timing’s off and things don’t go smoothly. And through it all, his messy, on/off relationship with Darcy’s mother doesn’t make things any easier.
(Oh, and Luis is Kirk. And maybe Jane is a less bitchy, slightly less intense Paris?)
Thoughts On Voltron Season 2
Can we officially coin a new phrase? I’m going to do it and I think everybody should support me on this.
Whenever a show with a pseudo-serious and consistent tone introduces something absolutely ridiculous that is apparently permanent but never mentioned again by the cast or in the plot it should be called.
VOLTRON’S COW.
Its not like a Simpsons’ episode where everything reverts to normal at the end of each episode. There is no reset. That cow is still on the ship somewhere. That cow is walking the halls of the castle mooing in despair and nobody talks about it.
More under cut (spoilery)
Cons-
1. Did Hunk get dumber? Or did they just treat him like he was dumber? Because in season one he got to do alot more engineering and mechanical stuff. In this season he made 99999.999 more food jokes and one of the most elaborate flatulence jokes I’ve ever seen.Hunk didn’t get close to a solo episode this season. Better luck next time buddy. 2. Did Lance get dumber? Did they just treat his character with less respect? He felt....dumber. He also felt more like a caricature of himself. He had exactly ONE moment of introspection the entire series and that was when he wondered if he was as valuable as the other members. Why wasn’t this explored in an entire episode? Lances only “Lance” episode was the one with the mermaids and it was more ensemble than singular focus. Pidge had to really grow to get her tree weapon but Lance just was like...I LIKE WATER and BAM! Sonic canons! What happened to the Lance that missed his family and earth? Where did that go? I miss that Lance alot. That was my favorite character good ole multi-facet Lance. I hope we see him again I do. 3.This season suffered from an EXTREME case of battle fatigue. Its that feeling you get when you’re watching a movie and there is so much action going on you get bored and apathetic. Alot of superhero movies have this problem but damn Voltron had the curse real bad this time around. Action exhaustion is easily cured by focus on characters and quiet moments or episodes spent on relationships. You know...like the first season.I am not by an stretch saying we need to not have action. We just need more quiet/funny episodes in between. When we got to the mall episode I was like..thank god there won’t be a giant robot fight in this one. Some of the fights felt tacked on because there needed to be some kind of fight QUOTA. Like Dreamworks told the story department that little boys got bored if there was too many feelings. (Is this show for little boys? Who is this show for? alot of people die in it but its not graphic so is it for...Oh whatever.)
4. Hey Voltron.There are more characters than Shiro and Keith you know. This season was the Keith season but as I talked about before it was not a great thing to focus all the attetion on. The show built up all this stuff about his relationship with the Galra and the mysterious knife in all their PAINSTAKINGLY long-winded build-up. Then it all ended with the biggest blue-balls reveal I’ve ever seen in an action show. Nobody. Cared. There were a few jokes by Dumb-Hunk and..some weird uncomfortable out of character racism by Allura and then...resolved? Again, next season better have more Hunk and Lance episodes and by this I mean NOT Dumb-Hunk and Dumb-Lance. I hate those guys. 5.Allura’s behavior was bad and out of character. Also thank god they gave her that five minutes of action at the end because otherwise? All she did the entire season was stay on the ship, yell at some screens and faint while Coran told her she was too weak to do -insert thing-. Do you think Coran ever gets sick of telling her that shes too weak to do -insert thing-.    C. NO PRINCESS YOU CAN’T MAKE TOAST IT’LL KILL YOU!    A. Don’t be silly Coran I’ll be fine ~makes toast~ AHHHHHH    C. PRINCESS NO!!!    A. ~faints dramatically~ Then all of the paladins scream in unison and the princesses fainting inspires them to unite and make the best toast the universe will ever know ~en scene~ Allura got one field-trip with Keith that really did nothing for either of the arcs they were going through even tho it SHOULD HAVE. IT kinda went into a little character development and shared bonding but not...enough. Even Allura’s final resolution with Keith felt oddly gross. Keith doesn’t even know how much of his DNA is Galra and even if its 99.9 percent he has been nothing but loyal and trustworthy. Killing my planet or no Allura you acted like a stupid bitch. I love you and your one of my favorite characters but seriously. Stupid. BITCH. Again this felt like Dreamworks telling the story department that little boys don’t like girls. Girls are icky. 6. How about giving us more backstory on those Galra resistance fighters? They seemed pretty interesting and THREE of them died. THREE. They made a lot of sacrifices. Sure would be nice to care about those sacrifices.
Yep. 7. The episode where Thace was being captured intercut with a battle was really not edited well. It went from bone-crushing action to...a guy talking with another guy. The tonal shift was distracting and not well thought out it seems. You would be into the fighting then suddenly back to the espionage you had totally forgotten about. Also Thace was boring. Also? Thace was/is probably Keith's dad. Calling it now.
8. I can’t believe neither Keith nor Hunk noticed the Galra they saved from space-monstro was a lady. She had lady hips and everything. I hope she doesn’t come back as a love interest but you know what she probably will. Pros- 1. Animation is ON POINT SON. This season obviously had a bigger budget and they CG lions were somehow blended even better than the first season. The backgrounds were beautiful and the color palettes just gorgeous. The fight scenes were spectacular at times and very well choreographed. But I am not surprised by any of that honestly. 2. This season did make me laugh. Probably not as much as the first season but I really really liked the Mall episode. The pool/exhaustion (You know the one where Keith and Lance do the Emperors New Groove friendship shuffle nude) episode will have its fans but the mall episode made me laugh a lot. I loved the security guard and the space pirates joke just...all of it. Good episode. WISH THERE HAD BEEN MORE LIKE IT MAYBE. 3. Even if the payoff was done badly at least they finished Keith’s arc. There were some other things they just seemed to leave hanging or didn’t explain very well but they kept on that arc and wouldn’t quit. ~golf clap~ 4. Out of the entire crew I felt the person who grew the most as a character was actually Pidge. Her lion episode was one of the more solid character pieces and we saw her change her mind about a previous bias.(HINT HINT ALLURA) 5. I like how they tried to steer some of the Alien character design away from a human-esque build. I liked the weird blobby maggoty things they saved from the acid planet and the Ohmu-esqe monster where they harvested the crystals. I really liked Slav’s design. It was interesting how he had a beak thing instead of a real mouth but was still very expressive.Make me a toy of Slav please he was like a cute Ghibli monster. I hate to admit how much I liked Slav with his lil pockets and his weird OCD problems. 6. Weird Al was one of the jellyfish mermaid resistance fighters.That is very important to me. Conclusion: I enjoyed the second season but it had some serious flaws and the constant battles became exhausting by the end making the conclusion just not as satisfying as it should have been. In fact thats my overall review.
:Satisfying but not as much as it really should be.
Another random story idea i dreamed last nightd
For once i actually got some details on the protagonist, she was a lady named Ramona who had a wheelchair and worked as a scientist in a sci fi alien future!
The plot was that her spaceship had crashed on the planet she was being escorted to, and all the soldiers and pilot died in the crash so she was left trapped in the wreckage of the ship with limited supplies and trying to stretch them long enough to reach a deadline when the rescue ship would reach her. It was framed as if i was playing a survival type game? But she wasnt able to do all the typical physical fighting and couldnt explore any areas she couldnt get her wheelchair past. She was kinda trapped in a small valley or something? So she had to befriend the local monsters and use their help to gradually expand the amount of areas she could reach. So like her ability of compassion and intellugence helped her survive where all the more traditional buff and gruff space pirate guys had failed.
Oh and there was a really sweet relationship with the first monster she met! I think this dream was inspired by the baby metroid which is why i reblogged a bunch of fanart for it earlier, haha! Ramona found a small psychic levitating jellyfish thingie that was just a bebby and she nursed it back to health. I think it got injured during the spaceship crash and its mother was killed in the wreckage? So she buried the momma monster along with the crew members who passed away, and taking care of this lil monster helped give her the strength to keep on living and believe she could make it home.
The lil larva looked kinda like a Sea Pig worm? Except it had big chompy teeth instead of a tentacle face, and lil dot eyes super far apart with a real goofy sense of personality to them. And it would fly around backwards like a nautilus and bump into stuff! Ramona treated the lil bean's wounds and fed it the last of her food supplies with a lil spoon and it was SO FUCKIN CUTE!! And the poor thing started off scared of her and she was so scared it was gonna die, cos it kept struggling in panic to find its mommy and almost ripping open its wounds. But gradually they reached a level of trust, and it would snuggle up in her arms and do a weird alien equivelant of purring. :3
And then i think this alien species was like the dominant predator of this particular biome of the planet? So usually they would have been the biggest threat to any human astronauts, but because Ramona befriended one of them she had a big advantage towards surviving! Lil bean helped her fight the other monsters and cut down trees to build a shelter and stuff cos it was like Unreasonably Strong for such a smol thing! And its dominant predator status helped it intimidate the other monsters and domesticate them as pets. Like the squishbeanfriend was closer to human sentience and more able to fully bond with our protagonist since it was raised by her from childhood, but all the other monsters would just be temporary allies that stayed wild. It was like you'd gradually remove random encounters in an area and turn them into helpful shortcuts or pseudo-shops. Like a wolfish lizard thing that brings you 1-3 random pieces of free meat each day as deference to your alpha status. And different monsters would like different meat, so if you lucked out you could get a rare type early and befriend a super strong ally in the next area! Or a lil scuttly tree crab thing that gathers shiny things like a magpieb and would run a more normal shop where you can trade useless shinys for shinys that are equally useless to the crab but very useful to humans. Like parts from previous crashed ships to try and fix yours!
And then i think the relationship between ramona and lil bean would become more like a mom and child? The dream didnt have a very consistant progression but at some point the baby monster was bigger and it was able to say some basic human words. And ramona read her storybooks, and also i think the monster was a girl? And ramona helped sew little monster-shaped dresses so she could see what human girls wear on her mommy's weird far away planet~
Oh and i think the adult version of this species was kinda like butterflies and squids combined? Like the Jelleye monster in final fantasy! Instead of a big squishy orb that floats around it would spin a cocoon and come out as a more thin and ethereal squid. It was like several layers of thin lacelike wings? Like not actually wing shaped but more like the ruffled skirts on Brionne from pokemon? Like a biological equivelant of something that looks like human clothes. The 'skirts' were made of similar material to butterfly wings, a thin plasticky film made of microscopic scales. It had multiple layers of that which could flare out like a peacock's tail to look all Big and scare predators! And there was a big eye and lil turtlelike beak on the top of the floof skirts, like where the top of the head would be on an octopus? So it always flew about sideways compared to an octopus but it was frontways for it. And also the mouth in the opposite place compared to squids who have them in the middle of their tentacles and basically in their butt crack. (While their butt crack is somewhere else..)
ANYWAY its hard to explain so i'll probably try and draw this smoofle cutie at some point! But you saw a bunch of the adult form flying around in flocks through the sky and lil bean would someday transform too and be able to fly high enough to reach them. But even though Ramona tried to get her lil teenage pupa daughter to agree to going back to her natural habitat, she refused and wanted to stay with her human adoptive mama. And it was sweet but also bittersweet because Ramona had to worry about whether her daughter would have been happy living a normal life for her species, and whether she'd made it impossible for her to reintegrate into her society because she'd been tainted by human ways of thinking. But lil bean daughter was like "no u literally saved my life i would have been dead without you, i didnt have a chance of a 'normal life' either way and i'd rather have an 'abnormal' mom than no mom at all!"
But also Ramona's worries were unfounded and daughter squiddo was indeed able to learn to communicate with her own kind, and instead became able to act as an ambassador between the two species! When the humans came to rescue Ramona they were able to meet with the squidfolk and undertake peaceful negotiations to reach a compromise between the species and start free cultural exchange instead of mining the planet for resources. Like they had no clue that these aliens were sapient and they could act as the benevolebnt Greys who could introduce their society to the concept of space travel and help them progress technologically.
And like within Ramona's lifetime she got to see this planet develop so much all because of her bad/good luck to just happen to crash there that day! And i think she went on to continue being an awesome space adventurer and travel the cosmos trying to do the same for other planets. She got a super awesome hi tech wheelchair mini spaceship thing that was equipped with mining excavation lazers and underwater mode and all sorts of stuff! And her lil super badass squid daughter came with her and they were a badass family astronaut team for the rest of their days! Like the dream even made sure to clarify that something or other about being stuck on the planet with a busted respirator made Ramona like.. Healthier? It explained it as 'gut flora bacteria' which somehow gave humans an equally long lifespan to the squid creatures, so bean daughter wouldnt have to watch her mom die. But also somehow it only worked for people in wheelchairs because.. Bloodflow?? Like i think i was remembering this story about how a man who lost his legs in a pilot accident was actually even more badass afterwards, cos his tolerance for high altitude flights was increased now he had less body mass to circulate the blood around. But somehow my brain turned that into immortality yogurt, i guess. Anyway the point is that Ramona was super extra double badass because something something the sci fi technology worked uniquely for disabled people. So she was a famous adventurer who could do high danger stuff that other people couldn't! And she used this power to become the ultimate peacemaker and bring more planets into the universal alliance, instead of taking all the mercenary jobs to rob these develiping civilizations of their land and resources.
Damn this was a really damn positive and motivational dream!! i want badass advebture mom and squidbean ambassador daughter to save the world irl! I bet they could kick trump's ass and overhaul the economy into a new era of prosperity and also friendly squids!
The Challenges of Being an Interracial Couple in America's Whitest City
Our wedding day. Photo courtesy of Meredith Bacon
I love my husband unconditionally, and we have amazing chemistry, but we’re also definite proof that opposites attract. He loves dogs, and before I met him, I was an aspiring cat lady. He was raised Mormon; I was raised a Methodist. He is white, and I am black.
None of these differences were deal breakers as we fell deeper and deeper in love, but even before America appeared to be on the verge of collapse, being in an interracial relationship came with its fair share of challenges.
From the beginning, I knew Xavier wasn't like any other guy I’d been interested in. For starters, he seemed to express genuine interest in me as a person… unlike most of the other white guys I’d encountered over the years, who desperately wanted to add a black girl to their roster of hookups. I called interactions with these types of guys "science projects," because they approached me like I was some sort of foreign specimen in a lab they just couldn't wait to examine.
For a very long time, I allowed this. Growing up in the predominantly white suburbs of Fairfield County, Connecticut, the dating pool was pretty shallow for a black girl. In my hometown, the guys who were genuinely attracted to me (beyond mere lust) would never admit it to their peers—they’d have been ridiculed for actually liking a black girl. So in order to feel the touch of a man in my adolescence, I played the role of a "Jezebel."
I grew up black in a mostly white area, so I was accustomed to casual racism. As a survival tactic, I learned how to disassociate every time I heard someone at a party "accidentally" drop an N-bomb. I was also under the illusion that because people thought I "sounded white," it was possible for me to transcend racial stereotypes. I figured that as long as I was able to abide by respectability politics and not be lumped together with those "other lazy Negroes," I could just be the token black girl. So I hid my natural hair under Brazilian bundles—not as a way to protect the beautiful kink that grew beneath it, but to assimilate more closely to European beauty standards.
But then Xavier came along, and things felt different. I’d always thought "the butterflies" were bullsh*t, but anytime I saw him, that’s the only way I can describe how he made me feel. He has these crystal blue eyes that had a way of unintentionally staring right through me, and best of all, he really made me laugh. I was sprung. So much of my seduction technique relied on being fetishized that when I finally met a man who had no interest in doing that, I became even more enamored.
When we met, he told me he was from Chicago, which I thought was sexy, because I imagined he had all kinds of wisdom from being raised in a city so full of culture. Of course, he failed to mention that the first years of his life had actually taken place in Salt Lake City, Utah, which isn't exactly a melting pot of diversity. Luckily, he’d been exposed to a mélange of different people during his time in Chi-Town, and had gotten the chance to develop a more worldly view.
Soon, Xavier and I were madly in love. But the second summer after we had moved in together, he went to visit a family member in Portland, Oregon. When he came back, he told tales of a magical land packed with breweries on every block and fine artisan cuisine spilling from food carts all over the city. Then he produced an engagement ring and persuaded me to move west with him. Once I’d officially been promoted to fiancée, we drove cross-country to our new home.
Of course, Portland was just as amazing as he’d described; this city is full of doughnuts shaped like voodoo dolls and an air of creative enthusiasm that encourages locals to "Keep Portland Weird."
There was only one detail my husband had left out. As the weeks passed, I slowly started to realize that I hadn’t seen any black people since we’d arrived. Because my husband is white, the lens through which he views the world had allowed him to visit Portland and never think twice about the fact that it was such an overwhelmingly white city.
But for me, this lack of diversity came as a complete culture shock. Connecticut is practically as white as Portland, so on its face, the transition should have been simple. But on the East Coast, there was so much more exposure to diversity, and I’d worked in New York for several years. Outside of working in metro areas, I had a support system of friends and family to seek refuge with when I felt like a black person engulfed by white space. Portland lacked these important elements.
Thanks to Google, I quickly discovered that we were now living in a place that is often referred to "Whitetopia." Not only is there a shortage of black people, but their lack of diversity was actually intentional, and the city has a long history of white supremacist activity.
Prior to moving, I thought I had mastered the art of navigating white spaces—being surrounded by white people didn't strike me as something I’d need to prepare for. However, after I moved, I became more and more aware of strangers’ inherent biases against and irrational fear of black people. At first, I thought I was imagining it. Xavier thought perhaps I was being too sensitive... but soon, even he began to see it.
People we met were never overtly racist, but they seemed to tense up once they saw me approaching them, and they’d relax once they realized I was with Xavier. When he and I would go out, I noticed that people would often intensify their eye contact with my husband so they wouldn't have to acknowledge me. On one fun occasion, a white waitress flirted with my husband all night, then referred to me as "Sister Girl."
These unbalanced interactions became routine, and I started to develop severe social anxiety. As I grappled with the new experience of trying to converse with people who were too scared to engage in sincere and authentic conversations, I started to understand the different nuances of racism. I became very familiar with the word microaggression, and pretty soon, I realized that everything I was experiencing had been happening my entire life… I’d just never fully noticed it.
We mostly continue to face the same changes as every other couple. Even though race comes up, it’s not what defines how we feel about each other.
When my husband was around, these microaggressions—like people touching my hair—happened way less often, if at all. Pretty soon, I stopped leaving the house without him. I didn’t feel safe in the city.
For a little while, I became resentful of my husband; I’d never felt so completely out of place in my entire life. Xavier tried his hardest to sympathize, but how could he have predicted this transition would be so difficult for me, if I hadn’t either? To make matters worse, while I was struggling to find my place as a black woman in a pseudo-liberal city, Xavier was thriving in this "A White Man’s Paradise." My resentment manifested itself in various ways. It ebbed and flowed, changing between tears and anger, and became a very rude awakening for the both of us. I suddenly understood the term for socially conscious people being called "woke." All at once, I felt wide awake.
The tables seemed to have turned. My city-slicker husband had quickly grown accustomed to the homogeneity of his new surroundings, but suddenly, his formerly racially indifferent fiancée was completely hypervigilant about her race.
I started to become increasingly furious with institutionalized racism. While my husband was mostly willing to listen to me, the subject sometimes became a source of contention as injustice after injustice continued to roll in, and examples of race-based police brutality flooded our news services. There were days I felt so heavy from seeing the deaths of unarmed black men go unpunished. A special kind of rage began to fester in me; I was surrounded by white people, all of whom were able to go about their lives during a time of political unrest… and my husband was among them.
When I had lived in Connecticut, I knew I could go home to my family and feel the safety of being among my family members who looked like me and could immediately relate when I told them something was racist. In those conversations, no one ever cast a doubtful look my way or asked, "Are you sure they were being racist?"
When you’re asked this kind of question at the end of the day, sometimes you’re just too tired to respond. Other times, you have no words to rationalize your humanity to your spouse. The rest of the world is so busy reminding you how very little your life matters, the last place you want to put in that work and explain yourself is in your own home.
As I tried not to slip into a deep depression, I focused on the biggest bright spot in our lives—planning our wedding. Planning a wedding was a way for me to appreciate the positive parts of our experience together. It wasn’t all bad; other than the racism, things were actually really good! We got a Boston Terrier puppy named Ralf Garfunkel. And creatively, I was producing the best work I had in years. Because Xavier was walking the puppy everywhere, he was getting increasingly healthier and svelte. And we were about to get married.
I was regretting the move to some extent, but there was and still is only one reason why I came here: I couldn't imagine a life without Xavier. By then, two years had passed, and regardless of feeling like an alien in my new city, I wanted to believe there was a light at the end of this tunnel, despite the darkness of feeling constantly ostracized by my race. Even though wedding planning had its challenges, the process helped me take my mind off a lot of the negative aspects of my life. It also gave me a chance to introduce the people I’d left behind to our new life together. We had an incredible wedding surrounded by the people we loved most, and it was after that day that I finally started to feel at home.
I tried not to blame my husband for being unable to understand my experience. Since becoming "woke," Xavier has learned a lot about his own privilege. He knows better than to get offended when I talk about dismantling white supremacy, and he doesn't need to chime in with #notallwhitepeople to relieve his guilt. It’s hard to ignore that the world feels like it’s on fire right now, with so much political change happening throughout the country. Still, we mostly continue to face the same changes as every other couple. Even though race comes up, it’s not what defines how we feel about each other. And as with any other marriage, we vowed to love each other forever and no matter what... or at least until the world ends.
