Itâs finally done, guys â five whole pages of Narilamb AU comic AND MORE be upon you! (If you have trouble reading any of the text, view the full-size! These pages are huge!)
Yeesh, this took forever. <:)
Thereâs probably a ton of inconsistencies and anatomy/perspective wonkeries, but this was mostly just comic practice, so Oh Hekkin Well, Lol <:D
(Yes, I am aware the Gatewayâs door isnât present in the Afterlife, and the actual way in is just a pentagram portal. Yes, I put the door in there anyway because Artistic License, i.e. it felt more impactful for there to be a prison door of sorts to walk through to freedom, rather than just a bland boring portal on the ground. đ )
anyway, i hate backgrounds so much lmao
Alternate ending and a buttload of bonus art under the cut, followed by goofy AU rambles and headcanon stuff:
Iâm calling it the Revival AU. Itâs not all that creative a title, and someone else has probably used it already, but I am too lazy to really care, LOL
Alternate ending page, which you will Definitely need to view the full-size for, Whoopsie Daisy:
The alternate ending was actually the first ending I finished things off with, because I had a brief badbrain moment where I forgot the emotional beat I initially wanted the comic to end on, and I tend to write comedy, anyway. I later remembered and drew out the proper ending, but I preserved and finished this one, too, because it still makes me giggle.
They had to go back for the followers off-screen in the AUâs real ending. And by âtheyâ I mean just the Lamb, because they werenât about to ask three newly freed cats to go back into what used to be their prison. The Lamb DID spend some time watching Narinder and the bois enjoying the outdoors first, though:
In other news, hereâs the Lamb and me making fun of my anatomy-drawing âskillsâ:
Meanwhile, if youâre wondering why the Lamb is just a-okay with how things went down vis a vis Their Murder, this bonus comic should answer at least some of your questions:
Ah, yes, also this is how they get engaged outside of the alternate ending. Forgot to mention that bit. XD (I already refuse to believe that Narinder is capable of flirting normally, so why would his initial marriage proposal be any better???)
Oh, and before any of them get a chance to actually head back to the cult grounds, there is one potential problem:
And by âproblemâ I mean something Narinder intends to ignore for At Minimum a thousand years. Cuz heâs a petty bitch like that. :D
what do you mean i drew the lamb too tall compared to the background? clearly theyâre standing on top of baal and aym lmao, why else would you think those two arenât in this one??? (aym and baal got way too excited about finally being outside, you see, and their silly modes are nothing to sneeze at)
And, speaking of heading back to the cult grounds, Iâm sure yâall would love to know how the Lambâs followers felt about the brand new change in management:
It all went better than expected. <:D Tiny ramble now, feel free to skip down to the next comic.
Before you ask, no, the Lamb does not have any actual powers anymore, other than the immortality Narinder definitely grants them. The Red Crown just thinks itâs funny to suggest otherwise, and Narinder does nothing to discourage this. Also, the Lamb and Narinder arenât actually married here yet, but, uh. Pretty safe to say that particular ritual directly follows the events of this comic. XD
Given how quickly he mellows out in canon, Narinder probably chills out a lot in this AU once heâs in charge of the cult, too, if only because 1.) Heâs finally free, and 2.) Heâs equally smitten with and distracted by the Lamb. Heâs definitely in charge at least 95% of the time, though, because the Lamb never actually wanted to be a cult leader and, now that their time as a vessel is done, they just want to be a normal(ish) sheep whoâs wholly devoted to their hot new divine husband.
Some followers do still have some valid concerns about these two being together, though, which Iâm sure at least a few of you might shareâŚ
Unfortunately for any such concerns, the Lamb is a bonafide masochist in this AU. :D
Theyâre also 100% a sub, obviously
Anyone at all: Your relationship is problematic and potentially toxic
The Lamb: fuck yeah it is, itâs so hot~ OuO
Hereâs just the last panel, made transparent for whatever nefarious purposes yâall might have for it:
Additional exchange Narinder and the Lamb have at some point, probably after the Lamb does a fatal whoopsie while out on a mission trip or in response to things getting a little too sadistic in the bedroom, ahaha:
Look, there is a very important distinction between life and death, and if you donât understand that, then youâre probably not worthy of being the God of Death, anyway. (At least, according to Narinder, and ONLY Narinder.)
Last but not least, have these shittens:
~Such creative naming conventions I have utilized, lololol~ :D Anyway, there's a few deets on them in the rambles down below.
The rest is all ramble, so before I get to that, Iâll just say â likes and especially reblogs are very much appreciated!!! :D If you happen to really really REALLY like my stuff, meanwhile, I do have a link in my bio to my ko-fi page, where Iâm accepting commissions and donations if youâre especially generous⌠ĂuĂ
Now, BE FREE IF YOU AINâT DOWN FOR READING MY GOOFY RAMBLES
First ramble is re: Baalâs question of âDid it really work?â, since I didnât feel like expanding on it in the comic proper, and itâs arguably pretty vague? He doesnât ask because he doubts Narinder or his capabilities, exactly, but because neither Baal nor Aym have ever actually seen their god at full power before (heâs still technically not at full power here, either). Itâs not expressly stated how soon the brothers were brought to Narinder after his imprisonment, but whether it was early on or after a length of time for Shamura to (somewhat) recover from his attack, he must have already been weakened, since I have no doubts that there was a huge battle that accompanied the Bishops working together to trap him. So, between that fight with all four of his siblings, sharing his power with a variety of vessels over time, and being chained immobile for a thousand years, he must have been severely weakened by the time he lent the Red Crown out to the Lamb, which would have only weakened him further.
I like to think this is how the Lamb is able to defeat him if they refuse to be sacrificed, despite how it took all four Bishops working together to subdue and chain Narinder in the first place.
All that aside, the three cats have been trapped in the Afterlife for so long that Baal also wanted verbal reassurance that they are all, indeed, actually able to leave it now â something that I headcanon isnât possible without a significant amount of power (i.e. the Red Crownâs cooperation with its bearer/vessel).
(On a semi-related note, I donât headcanon Aym and Baal as twins. I like sweetheart big bro Baal and snarky little goth bro Aym too much to have them be that close in age.)
Ah, teeny thing: If you noticed I switched up the art style for Narinder on the second page, that was intentional. It's sort of a visual indicator that there has been a Big Change for him - that being, how much power he has after sacrificing the Lamb. As for why I changed up his arms in the grass rollin' pic, I don't really subscribe to the notion that his arms are spooky bones because they're horrifically injured (beyond chain-chafing scars, that is), but rather just because he's the Bishop of Death, so he can change how normal-to-spooky they look at will. At some point I might doodle out how I imagine his appearance to range between least to most eldritch... đ¤
Next ramble, regarding Narinderâs feelings towards the Lamb...he was initially too focused on being freed from his imprisonment to form any real attachment to them. They were a tool for his use, first and foremost, but he did notice their intense devotion towards him. It was impossible not to notice, because the Lamb was always very happy to see him, even if it was because they died during a crusade (yet again). He wasnât originally planning to revive them once he was freed, either, because he saw no real point to it â after all, they were already dead when they first met him, just as any other mortal would be when meeting him in the Afterlife, so death has very little real consequence in his eyes. But, once the chains were off, and it really sank in that he stood to lose the most devoted follower heâs ever had, he decidedâŚwhy put their soul to rest for good or leave them stuck in the Afterlife when he could just as easily revive them again? And why not reward them for their hard work, anyway? Not only would it cost him nothing by comparison, but the future devotion that could come of it would surely make up for his (bare minimum) effort in reviving them.
He wasnât expecting to get a full dose of that devotion and a smiling face so soon after killing them, though~ :3c (because the Lamb is a bonafide freak, and not-so-secretly into the fucked up power dynamics going on here, lol)
I should mention here that I am firmly of the belief that any non-god/vessel who crosses through the Gateway and into the Afterlife just straight up dies. So, Aym and Baal? Also straight up dead, from the second Shamura brought them through. Their souls were just never put to rest so that Narinder could have some company â if only according to Shamura. Narinder kept the two around mostly out of bewilderment, because honestly, who are these kittens, and what is Shamuraâs game here, anyway??? They never even explained anything, they just tossed these kittens into the Afterlife and LEFT!!! At any rate, Aym and Baal being dead is how I explain why their souls apparently become lost in the void if theyâre killed, along with the added complications required to revive the two because of it.
So, with those deets in mind, and given a bit of time, if Narinder hadnât chosen to revive the Lamb, and also hadnât chosen to put their soul to rest, they still would have woken up at some point, despite being as straight up dead as Aym and Baal. Who, donât worry, were also properly revived while Narinder was waiting for the Lamb to wake up. Because I am also firmly of the belief that, first, the dead cannot leave the Afterlife without the use of a ritual/relic (and can't stay in the living world for long regardless), and second, dead followersâ devotion isnât anywhere near as potent as that of the living, given how much more the living stand to lose.
Final ramble, regarding the Lambâs feelings towards Narinder, and why theyâre so devoted to himâŚ
Well, you donât spend most of your life on the run with your steadily-dwindling herd, trying to evade the ongoing genocide of your species, without becoming a little fucked up in the head. Maybe a lot fucked up in the head. Life is suffering, so might as well have fun with it, right? Maybe start finding death and pain to be kind of hilarious, even a little bit hot, once everyone you know and love is dead and gone, leaving you all alone? And maybe after that, thereâs something comforting in how, despite the cold, cruel uncertainties of life, at least you can always count on the inevitability of death, patiently waiting for you until your very last breath? Who knows. Either way, as soon as the Lamb was killed, and they learned that the literal God of Death was offering them a second chance at life and vengeance via effective immortality, they were 100% ride-or-die-devoted all at once. Turns out death is kinder than life â go figure. (Of course, it helps that Narinder is 100% their type.)
They werenât put off by Narinderâs thinly-veiled sadism or manipulations, either â theyâre not too different in those regards, albeit opting for vastly different methods. Itâs a very âtwo sides of the same coinâ sort of deal. In order to stay alive once they were made the last of their kind, the Lamb had no qualms with using others to their advantage, and that did not change once they were revived and expected to run a cult. They didnât care for the position of authority, though â being a sheep and all, theyâre much more of a follower than a leader, and thus greatly appreciated Narinderâs need for control. With how they had to keep on their toes for so long, the Lamb was also pretty good at reading people by the time they died, so they could recognize that a lot of Narinderâs posturing was just that â posturing. Dudeâs 95% bluster and only 5% bite. He could obviously be vicious when he wanted or needed to (the Bishops' injuries were clear proof of that), but underneath his outer layer of cruelty was a generous layer of tsundere, and underneath all THAT was a soft squishy middle sibling velcro cat in desperate need of attention and affection.
(Which, for the record, he Did Not feel comfortable getting from Aym and Baal â Narinder still has no idea why the fuck Shamura sent them to him, beyond acting as keepers at best or trying to sabotage his attempts to escape at worst. Which, he thought HE sabotaged in turn, by guiding the kittens into being his devoted disciples instead. He thought he was very clever for it. âI outsmarted Shamura!â he thought, despite that there was never anything there to outsmart. âWhat do you mean, Shamura sent your kittens to me for company?â he demands of Forneus later. It may or may not lead him to pull Shamura out of Purgatory just so he can shake them and scream about how they should have Fucking Explained that!!!)
But, getting back on track as to why the Lamb was so willing to be sacrificed, I cannot stress this enough â if you pay even a minimal amount of attention to what heâs saying, Narinder is REALLY NOT SUBTLE about his intentions. âDeath is of little consequence.â âFollowers are for you to use to your advantage.â âSacrifice a follower to absorb more power.â So, yeah, the Lamb knew exactly what would be expected of them once the other Bishops were dead. They knew Narinder would expect them to die for him one last time. But, after all, death is of little consequence (not to mention hot), so when the time came, they wanted to see him freed, even if it meant oblivion for them in the end.
Heâd given them a second life, and the ability to avenge their kin, and they felt indebted to him for that â so, while they were still pretty glum about the possibility that they might not get to see him free of his chains, nothing beyond their devotion and debt to him mattered. They never wanted all the drama and expectations that came with the Red Crownâs power, anyway, so, better for Narinder to have it back so that he could deal with it. What he did with the Lamb afterward would be up to him, and seeing as he was their god, theyâd accept his decision gladly.
Were they in love with him by that point? Oh, obsessively so, but only in the devotional sense â romance was nowhere on their mind nor radar. That is, until he unexpectedly revived them again, told them he still needed them, and then offered down his hand to help them up.
The Lamb fell HARD for him in that moment. :3c
And now, a tiny shitten ramble. Lu and Li are twins, because sheep tend to have those a lot, and are conceived not long after the Lamb and Narinderâs marriage ceremony. Lu is the minutes older one, but Li is much more mature. I have put no further thought into these two, other than that they are utter menaces, birthed by the Lamb, cling hard to both their parents but especially Narinder (who spoils them rotten), and they are both genderfluid, using whichever pronouns/names they feel like at any given time. They are also both intersex, same as the Lamb, who was initially infertile up until Something Something Vague Magic, which I have also put no further thought into ÂŻ\_(ăˇ)_/ÂŻ
oh, and before anyone tries to suggest i headcanon this AUâs lamb as trending more female due to them giving birth or whatever, no, no, a thousand times no, they might have a vag, but they've also got a dick, and even if it's not as big as they'd like, they still know how to use it
Finally, the very tentative name for the Lamb in this AU is Yazdi, which is really just another name for the Baluchi breed of sheep XD (Not that the Lamb is this specific breed, I just didnât like any of the other sheep-related names I found, ahaha...)
THATâS ALL FOR NOW (collapses into an exhausted pile of goopy limbs)

Oh hey! Since my Spooktober Event is over and done with, here's that finished pic for my... String Bean Naruto OC lol
(table they're leaning on not pictured lol)
Still not sold on the colors here. Mostly because I keep defaulting to tan/dark skinned, yellow/orange eyes, and purple hair for "Little mischievous shit with massive cat energy" and I can only blame Bleach and Kubo so much for that. Does fit! But it's....
I don't know? Not quite right?
I do want them darker (the majority of Naruto characters are pretty pale so it helps them stand out without going ham on design or something). I DO like the chaotic hair that seems endless and messy. Freckles are also quite nice!
As fun as the color changing eyes is, it would be harder to keep track of long term and having them be a little spooky is good. Almost considered red but it was kinda... Eh? Almost did a champagne pink for fun but that's also a bitch to get right.
For the hair... It's mostly the hair that's getting me, I suppose. It all looks good like this but idk. Black hair is so very done in the cast, red hair has Uzumaki connections, and blond is a bitch to render without being weak brown for some reason. Very tricky to color right, true story. White hair would be a bit... It feels overdone and tends to imply sickness in a character for some reason, especially if they have long hair. That or fragility. Which is a problem cause I wanna get across that they're Weird but Earnest. A tad wacky but well meaning and lonely.
Also did not draw out the scars.
Hmm, while I'm sitting here, here's a few more hair colors.
So blue is fun (I'm biased) but a pastel blue with the darker skin would clash I fear. And tends to imply a character that fades into the background. And if there's anything string Bean CANT do, it's blend. Dark blue is more subdued and tends to be the default way to render black hair with highlights, usually featuring with shy, or serious characters which... Does not fit.
Green is an interesting idea, would also imply a earthy connection (halfway between the sun and moon). A bit more rare of a hair color, BNHA notwithstanding. But also gives off flower child vibes I think. Not quite right.
Pink is a bitch to do right and tends to belong with optimistic, upbeat characters. Which is a bit much for string bean... Eh.
Brown is a bit of a boring option and kinda fades into the background a little. Reliable, nothing crazy, and just a little different from just straight black. Tends to feature mousy characters? I don't hate it, but I'd like to have fun with them design wise.
Yellow is... A little too loud. Especially given how much hair they have. It'd be a lot and would make the other colors a lot more difficult to choose if I try and pick different clothes. Also the white parts wouldn't stand out as much.
The problem is that I gotta communicate that this character is Weird but also Very Connected To Nature (Chakra) without meaning to be. Which is partly why their hair is turning white in parts.
Ugh, I love designing characters but it's always the little things that drive me nuts lol
Key traits for String Bean: Lonely, eccentric, wise, kind, and giving.
Maybe I should give opal hair a try again and just have their whole head already basically white. Just off enough to be noticed but dismissed at a distance. no idea about the eyes tho

your events are always so fun and I don't usually participate but can I beâanon?
my hobbies lately have been cleaning, reading, and trying to get back into drawing as well as going on walks!
my personality type is and INFP and and as for regular personality, I know others will say different but I tend to think of myself as boring. I have a few close friends I cherish and I love all of them dearly! despite my best efforts I'm not very adventurous and usually keep to myself, but when things are going on around me (chaos), I'm usually enabling it or judging just slightly in the background. I tend to be the listener, happily sitting while people tell me about themselves or their problems and offering solutions if need be.
I can be very loud (usually unintentionally) or you won't even know I'm there and I've scared many people with how quiet I am. I also wear my emotions on my face and you can always tell when I don't like things cause, unfortunately for me, I make it known with my expression
(I legitimately can't think of anything else but I hope you have a nice day!!)
Hiya! :3
And you certainly may! I thought of a few options for you as well, but I shall go with the more well known one
So I shall match you up on a date with...
Charlotte Roselei
While Charlotte might be a knight, and definitely capable of putting her foot down, when she is with her squad, or at home, she prefers to be more quiet and tranquil. She is a lady too, after all. So, while she wouldn't admit it, she does have a more soft spoken side. Or at the very least, she is able to be more soft spoken.
But out of the two of you, you definitely are more of gentle spirit. Though there would be moments where you exchange glances whenever some (cough Yami cough Jack cough) are on a ...roll.
However, she'd feel more at peace knowing that she has a likeminded person by her side, who feels as she feels too. She's not alone, when she's with you.
She's not very good with advice per se, if it's not about work. Because she has lived a very solitary life, so she treasures your ability to do so. But she'll do her very best to let you know that she is there for you; standing by you no matter what.
Charlotte is an unmovable force of nature, who is determined to make something out of herself despite her curse that is hindering her. But she's letting her strength and capabilities speak for herself most of the time. However, she's not afraid to voice herself if need be. And she would do so on your behalf as well, more than gladly.
You're her treasured spouse, and while you might consider yourself as "boring" or "ordinary", in a garden filled with blue roses, a pink one is a rarity

Sentence Structure and Flow
Someone on discord asked me about how I structure sentences and how I learned to write. Iâm going to do my best to answer! Hopefully itâs useful. It got long, so I made it a Tumblr post.
On learning to write:
Sky_squido, the author of âWhat Hyrule Hadnât Seenâ made this presentation and there were several points in it that I found incredibly helpful.
The two main ideas that I found most beneficial:
Itâs about the ~vibes. Every story or scene has some kind of overall theme or emotion. Once youâre far enough into your story to have found what that is, edit your word choice to match. If a word technically works but doesnât fit the mood, replace it with something else. The actual definition of a word is sometimes less important than the emotion that word conveys.
Verbs are incredibly important. If youâre having trouble with your sentence structure - if your story seems boring or like the prose drags - look at your verbs. I tend to use âisâ as a verb far too often (or âwasâ for those of you who write past tense), so a lot of my editing comes down to reworking some sentences to make the stronger, more interesting words be the action words. So instead of âLegend was walking,â the sentence would be âLegend walked.â Or, even better, âLegend strolled/stalked/slouched along.â Weâve gone from a passive sentence to something that tells us, in engaging fashion, not just what Legendâs doing but how heâs doing it and maybe even a little about how heâs feeling.
Filter Words
Another post I found incredibly helpful: examples of how to cut out âfilter words.â Itâs great for adding urgency, establishing tone, and introducing strong descriptions into your writing. Basically, this is how to put âshow, donât tell,â into practice at a sentence-structure level. I use this approach a lot when it comes to conveying character emotion.
A couple other points
Variation is your friend.
Repeating things draws attention.
Description slows things down.
1. Variation is your friend.
For most writing, itâs a good idea to vary your sentence structure and length. Dialogue with no tags is rapid. Same with short sentences. Short and choppy reads disjointed and fast. This also applies to paragraph lengths! Longer sentences and paragraphs read slower, and in turn cause your reader to linger; sometimes maybe even linger too much. A combination keeps things interesting.
Too many long sections in a row - be they sentences or paragraphs - causes reader fatigue. Donât be afraid to break those up. Let your readers take a breather.
If all your sentences start the same way, rework some of them. Lead with the action in one sentence and the subject in the next.
Starting a new paragraph gets a readerâs attention. You can use this for punch.
You should have one topic, or one person speaking, per paragraph.
Important things go at the start of the paragraph. Readers wonât tend to remember as much stuff from the middle or ends. Speed readers might not read those sections at all. The above note about one topic per paragraph? This is why.
2. Repeating things draws attention.
This applies to everything from individual words to overall themes to something like a series of sentences all with the same structure. It can work for you or against you.
A lot of my editing winds up being me reworking sentences to avoid using the same word too closely in succession. Iâm not talking basic words here, like âheâ and âsaid.â Those are non-words. If you have enough strong words around them, they disappear. Theyâre fine. But to use a snippet from a current work in progress:
...(Legend) bares his teeth, river water dripping off his hair and sticking his tunic to his legs. He braces his legs, wet muck squelching over the sides of his boots.
I wound up changing to âsticking his tunic to his thighsâ to avoid the repeated word âlegs.â I didnât want to draw attention to his legs themselves, but the state of them. âHe braces his feet,â would also work, or I could just cut the sentence down. âHe braces,â does the trick just as well, and might be what I go with for the final draft. If the sentence makes sense without the word, then you can let the unneeded word go and your writing will often be stronger for it.
This can be much harder to do with nouns than verbs. Sometimes you just need to call a sword a sword. Thatâs usually where I start to alternate between a small group of words. âSword,â âblade,â and âweaponâ can all be alternated between to try to avoid using the same word too close together. You might also be able to get around using the problem word at all, as in the example above.
Another note on non-words. Names and pronouns qualify! You can use them over and over again and readers wonât notice. In fact, trying not to use these words can actually draw more attention than just using them!
For example, referring to Hyrule as âthe Traveler.â Is it relevant, in the context of what I am writing, that Hyrule travels a lot? Or am I just trying to avoid using his name too much? If the answer is the latter, either donât bother or change your sentence structure to remove the name entirely. If you have a solid action word, the name will disappear in favor of the action.
Using âTravelerâ in this context draws attention away from whatever Hyruleâs doing to what he is. That may not be the best thing to draw attention to. If what you are writing is a story about Hyrule finally getting a safe place of his own to call a home, you could use it for contrast. In which case, save it. Use it once, so it has impact. But if I'm writing about Hyrule teasing Legend, referring to him in that way can disrupt the flow of the story. It draws attention away from Hyrule's personality and his interaction with Legend to his background.
The point is to do it deliberately! Itâs okay to use names and pronouns a lot. âTravellerâ is a title. Titles stand out.
3. Description slows things down.
Anywhere you want to linger or draw attention is where your descriptions should be going.
The middle of a fast paced action scene where your character is concentrating on the fight might not be the best spot to go into deep detail about the surroundings or what the enemy looks like. Convey those details in bursts that are worked into the action: âTime nearly rolls his ankle on the rocky ground.â Be very sparing. What makes an action scene interesting is how the character feels about whatâs happening. You only need enough information on what the surroundings look like for a reader to follow along, and you can probably do most of that setup in a brief paragraph before the actual action starts.
On the other hand, if your character takes a shocking injury in said fight and you really want to dwell on that moment? Or if theyâve got a really cool, flashy move that they unleash in one single exciting burst of fighting prowess? Thatâs the spot to let your inner poet shine. Slow those spots down and let the reader really enjoy what youâre doing by using your detailed descriptions there.
This applies to all action, not just fighting. Walking through a busy marketplace? Action. A conversation? Can be approached as action. The best spots to use lots of description will be the spots you want to linger on: the first glimpse of a long-lost friend through the crowd, that last hug as they say goodbye.
Description slows things down. Use it accordingly.
Most everything else I can think of is less to do with flow and structure and more to do with other aspects of writing, so I'll stop here.

This has been haunting me for a while, so here goes. Maybe, all of Feanors sons are the type to use pet names with everybody. This is partly because they canât be bothered to learn names of people they despise, but also because they know it makes everyone involved incredibly uncomfortable.
Having to interact with them must be terrifying enough as an average First Age elf, but having them refer to you as sweetheart or darling the entire time takes to a whole other level.
... they fuckinâ would
maedhros uses his pet names more tactically than his brothers. heâll carefully calculate the best point to drop a condescending nickname into a conversation heâs getting tired of. his favourite pet name could feasibly be localised as âmy sweet, sweet summer childâ
maglor does it constantly, for literally everyone, and the only way to tell the difference between an affectionate âdarlingâ and an about-to-kill-you âdarlingâ is through minute variations in his tone of voice. go away mobster-au!flapper-girl!mags i donât have time to explain you right now
celegorm is the same as mags except heâs infinitely more bro-y. heâs got different general nicknames for different classes of people, ranging from âhombreâ for his closest friends to âdumplingâ for people who are going to die. it is legitimately up for debate whether he remembers anyoneâs actual name
caranthir calls people either very sarcastic compliments or some variation on âdipshitâ when heâs irritated, which is most of the time. he is fully capable of turning it off during important diplomatic meetings, he just doesnât usually bother. heâs good at coming up with insulting nicknames on the fly, especially when talking to his brothers
curufin keeps an itemised list of the personal failings of everyone he knows he can draw on for deluxe tailor-made mocking pet names. whether or not he uses them varies both on how much he respects someone and how good his mood is; if heâs calling celegorm a lapdog of oromĂŤ heâs having a really bad day
amras likes shortening peopleâs names, and does it more when they complain about it. his natural speaking style is very informal in general, and if you take that as an insult, well, thatâs your problem. heâs likely to interpret hard-to-shorten names as A Challenge
amrod... it varies. in sindarin sign language heâs very polite for a fĂŤanorian, uses peopleâs actual names, sometimes even their titles, if he feels like it. in noldorin sign language, which thingol canât ban if he doesnât know exists, heâs got hilarious nicknames for absolutely everybody. he tends to work them into his running commentary on boring meetings, which is why certain fĂŤanorian encounters have a background soundtrack of amras chortling
(celebrimbor doesnât do it at all until sauron reveals himself, after which he never uses sauronâs name again. âyellow-bellied self-serving unimaginative HACKâ is probably the nicest way he ever refers to his friend-turned-enemy)

Pick a card reading: What makes you so attractive to others + bnha characters who would highkey simp for you
Hiya i am back, this spread basically highlights all of your attractive qualities about yourself (and yes you do have them) with the added additon of a hidden talent and how you can better love yourself.Â
My favourite part of this reading is at the bottom I have included My hero characters that would very much swoon if you even spoke to them (in other words they have a crush).Â
I was going to do 4 piles for this reading but everytime i tried to do the 4th one i kept getting really bad headaches so i decided against it.Â
All you need to do is look at the anime food photos infront of you and pick the one you were first drawn to and then scroll below to your reading. I hope you enjoy it and that this reading does reasonate with you.
Stay safe and healthy
Pile 1 (Watermelon)
Why you are so amazing
The traits and simply make you, you.Â
The Sun: I literally squealed when this card came out of the deck, like chaotic babies unite. This card represents all things happy, you just have this cheerful personality that brings so much joy to others like even with the doom and gloom around us you still manage to keep on smiling which is honestly a massive talent. For some reason (if there are any MHA fans in the building) I thought of Mirio who is always so upbeat and ready to help others in need, I feel like this is definitely you. To me, the idea of being a really good storyteller came into my mind like the sun represents the performative aspects of life so just naturally grabbing that audience's attention is something you are so good at and I am never ever bored in your company. Looking at the picture of the card there is a little child riding a horse, you have this childlike innocence and curiosity which is the most adorable thing ever but I feel like sometimes people underestimate your intelligence and capabilities. I would like to say that the child on the card is sitting in a very confident manner and is controlling the horse with ease which suggests to me that you do have this deep maturity about you too which people tend to forget, the fact you can go from loud and upbeat to quiet and introspective is so cool and amazing as Hannah Montana says âyou got to live the best of both worldsâ. One final message is that it is ok to feel sad and that you donât have to be optimistic all the time, you are not a burden and many people will rush towards you full of love and support.Â
Page of Swords: seeing this card after drawing the sun made a lot of sense in my mind, the page represents youthful energy and the swords are all to do with our intellect and abstract concepts (like of like air in astrology) so you might be a bit of a bookworm or you like to learn more about things like tarot or astrology. What I can say is that you know a little about a lot which is super amazing because you always have some random fact tucked into your brain, you would be great on a quiz team. You are so witty and funny too like I can imagine people are always bent over laughing whenever they are in your company and if you do not believe me then I can guarantee that is what they say to other people when talking about how cool you are. Quite the chatterbox on your school reports I can imagine the teacher said that you may have âtalked a bit too muchâ but you canât help it, you do love to socialise. Looking at the picture on the card the page is surrounded with clouds so I can imagine you are a little bit of a daydreamer which is very endearing and sweet you canât help it physics the last thing on a Friday is just so incredibly boring, you come up with the grandest ideas and no one knows how like why didnât they think of that you are a natural outside the box thinker. Lastly, I think the Page of Swords is a very good problem solver sure it might not be the most straightforward solution if you solve your problems in a way which works for you, you do not follow convention and are proud to be an innovator and that deserves a reward in itself.Â
The Lovers: the most romantic card in the whole deck, my goodness you are a hopeless romantic, you love to daydream about all the possibilities and you might also believe in soulmates, personally I think it is very sweet and we need more idealist in this world because sometimes reality can seem so bleak. I just know in my heart that you would be one of the best s/o âs ever like you would do all the cute romantic gestures like buying roses and leaving cute notes around their room like I am actually gonna go and squeal in a pillow because of how precious you are. The Lovers also indicate that you know who you are and you know what your morals are, whilst you may be an idealist you donât let people walk all over you thatâs for sure, you stand up for yourselves and for others and are the voice for the people who cannot be heard. You make a very good public speaker too (you should give it a go deffo) and are very clever with your words as the Lovers are ruled by Gemini. A scenario which popped into my head was somebody thinking you flirted with them but in actual fact, you were just being friendly. Looking at the picture of the card the background appears to look like the garden of Eden for some odd reason the first kind of trait is you being able to make yourself at home anywhere. The Garden of Eden represents paradise so like you can naturally find your âparadiseâ in a different location or with a group of people perhaps the word I am looking for is spontaneous whatever it is I feel like that is something you can do. My last message is that you sometimes doubt yourself and your decision-making skills. What I have to say is that trust your intuition and go for it, donât get too caught up in your head because you do not need to, you have excellent observation skills already.Â
Hidden Talent
Perhaps something you might not have been aware ofÂ
Knight of Swords: You are very ambitious, I feel like many people do not see that due to your sunny exterior but once you have a goal in mind there is no stopping you. You remind me of the Queen song Donât stop me nowâ like your life is always so fast-paced. When the situation calls for it you can leave that page of sword persona and step up into the role of the knight and take charge of the situation. You are assertive and direct as I think some of you reading this reading today may feel like you are a bit of a doormat but I can confidently say you are not. Also, you are extremely intellectual, you may not be academically intelligent but itâs more that you are very eloquent and can debate with ease, like you can break down someone elseâs point and explain how they contradict one another or how they donât add up. On the card itself, the knight is wearing the colour blue, according to colour theory blue is representative of Logic and wisdom. Another big indicator of how smart you really are not a himbo by any means. You do have a very logical side to yourself that perhaps you donât even realise you are using like you are very good reasoning out things (sorry that this is so vague my mind had gone all foggy). Blue is also a very calm colour so you are definitely a very tranquil kind of person too, you do not stress out often and you donât let high-pressure situations get the better of you. You truly are cool as a cucumber. Writing this currently, I feel so peaceful, like you create a sanctuary for people.Â
How to love yourself
We all have our down days so here are some tips and tricks to make you feel betterÂ
2 of Coins: I feel like the universe here has kind of given you two options here. Usually, this card indicates a need to be flexible and have to juggle things around if in this case I do not believe it is your message. I wanted to look at the image, especially the two pictures inside the coins. The first one is the weighing scales which are perfectly balanced which I interpreted as being the symbol of Libra. Being patient with yourself and saying kind words to yourself can be very healing, a tactic could maybe leave post notes in nice places so whenever you walk around the room. Definitely pamper yourself when you deserve it. The message I am getting from this card is that you are too harsh on yourself and never give yourself the self care you deserve, get that face mask and blast a bit of Megan, be the princess/prince you deserve to be. On the other part of the coin is a picture of a big moon with a tiny sun in the middle, my interpretation comes back to the sun card and you feel like you always have to hold this cheery facade. The moon represents our emotions specifically our anxieties and fears with it being bigger so with it being the bigger image I feel like in order to love yourself you are going to need to express your emotions in a healthy way whatever mechanism works best for you, for me ranting to a close friend always helps but other people prefer to journal or use a creative outlet which is fine too. Lastly, as I mentioned at the top the 2 of coins indicates that you have lots of projects in your life so maybe if you immerse yourself in those you can unlock the true path to good self esteem.Â

Pile 2 (Ramen)
Why you are so amazingÂ
The traits that simply make you, you
The Star with the 2 of Swords: these cards both fell out at the exact same time with the star on top and the 2 of swords behind so I decided to use the swords card as a clarifier one. I say this about a lot of the cards but i can tell that the star is one of my faves 100% it represents hope, creativity and calm. The first kind of trait that came into my head when this card popped out is that you always shine wherever you go, you are just gifted at everything, some of you think you may be the burnt out gifted child but you are not, you still glow even if you canât see it yourself and people are in awe (and somewhat intimidated by you) because of your success and achievements. Looking into the actual meaning you are the type of person to never give up, the star is a sign that your wishes are coming into fruition, if something doesnât go according to plan you do not dwell on it too much and brush yourself up again and carry on which is amazing considering the circumstances we are in. The word I was looking for is resilient and persistent. You donât let the haters stop you from doing your thing. You have a calming disposition and I imagine your role is the mediator of the friendship, like you just have the most soothing presence. I want to go into more detail about the fact the star is ruled by Aquarius because that fact seems to keep sticking out for me, I trait we never talk about in regards to aquarius is that they can in fact be great leaders, they are the trendsetters of the zodiac so I feel like you prefer to live life your own way rather than copy others which I admire you for because going against the current is hard. Because of your actions I feel like you inspire others whenever you know this or not (spoiler alert you do). Another thing that has sprung to my mind is that I feel like you can be quite mysterious. Everybody is so intrigued by you wanting to know what is going on in your mind. With the 2 of swords being there too, it usually indicates that a decision needs to be made however looking at the picture the lady is confidently holding the 2 swords which suggests to me that you are a very decisive person and once you set your mind to something there is no stopping you. You are much more talented than you give yourself credit for so never stop shining.
The Hierophant: this made me very intrigued about your reading when this card fell because the star and the hierophant kind of have contrasting energies since the H is ruled by Taurus. The Hierophant stands for knowledge and education, you probably take your studies quite seriously or you naturally maintain good grades throughout the year (which i think is so cool), you are the person who forms a study group to help their dumbass friends so that they donât fail the finals and honestly as someone who is a member of the dumbass friend squad without people like you in the world I wouldnât have any educational qualifications. Helping others is second nature to you, always quick to give a helping hand with those in need. The Hierophant is a responsible figure so that in turn means so are you, you always make sure that everything is done on time and that your drunk friends get home safely, others may say you can be a little bit too serious but I have to disagree, your organisation skills are amazing and if I ever met you you will probably be my idol. Looking at this cards ruling sign Taurus, not a lot of people realise how ambitious a taurus can be (most people think quite the latter but remember there is a reason that taurus is an earth sign), you have big plans for yourself and I feel like you definitely prioritise your career over other aspects of yourlife, your drive and commitment to yourself and others is truly amazing and promise me you wonât be too hard on yourself because as some random kardashian once said âyou are doing amazing sweetieâ.Â
Knight of Pentacles: this card is the CEO of detail, the knight is a figure who is very happy to serve the king and with it being in the suits of pentacles no detail will be missed out. You are incredibly observant of others one example that popped into my head is that you can tell what others are thinking through either body language or just how they communicate (take this if it resonates with you) or maybe you are simply very organised. Either way your amazing perception is something that goes unnoticed by others so I believe this card fell from the deck as a chance to give you the credit you deserve. You are incredibly hard working, the knight is always alert and on duty so no matter the day of the week you are working, it can be school work or passion projects you are constantly trying to achieve the best version of yourself, make sure you have a break and have a kit kat yâknow. The knight is patient who works diligently towards his goals which I think you very much channel, like you are so kind and patient towards anyone, always offering to listen to other peopleâs problems and offering them first class advice (which is something I am very jelly of in a good way). The message I get from this is that you are so patient with others so please be patient with yourself, donât push yourself so hard that your self esteem begins to suffer because you do not deserve that.Â
Hidden Talents
Perhaps something you might not have been aware ofÂ
The High Priestess: this card is such a badass card, like the high priestess is the CEO of intuition and all that jazz, your bullshit detector is off the radar and the even cooler thing you donât even know it. This isnât to say you should be distrustful of every single person you meet but if you have a gut feeling I say you should stick with it as mother nature has blessed you out of this world intuition. The high priestess represents having inner power, the picture on the card shows her sitting in her chair very assured. To other people you come across as having this quiet confidence, you do not boast about your talents through words however you bring them forward with actions, I feel like people are secretly in awe of you. Coming back to the picture the high priestess is mostly wearing teal (including her dress and her accessories), typically the colour teal represents elegance and politeness which is something you 100% possess ( a true lady/gentlemen) however reading more into the psychology behind this colour one line really stuck out to me - âTeal is a slightly unconventional colour, you value your uniqueness and donât wish to fit in the crowdâ, whilst you may have a serious demeanor it doesnât me you are boring by any means, it could be the way your express your style via clothing that is unique or perhaps you have a secret niche interest that not many people know about. Whatever it is, you are a very interesting and complex person and you are definitely a lot more than meets the eye.Â
How to love yourself
We all have our off days, so here is some tips and tricks on how to feel better
The Star: I found it so amazing that this card came out again in a different deck, the message when I saw the 2 star cards just confirmed to me that you donât realise how amazing you are, like you are constantly downplaying yourself because you are so incredible modest, like you are so much better than you think you are and you deserve all the joy in the world. The star in tarot represents hope and affirmations, somebody praising you definitely makes your day. (this message just came to me when i was writing this), society constantly tells us not to out looking for external praise and to be happy with ourselves it has to come from within but I slightly disagree on this standpoint, I believe you guys lack that external validation in your life, so when someone does praise you it really has a big impact. Getting complimented is a good thing and you deserve every single one of them. Getting back on track, looking closely at the picture the lady is pretty much naked except for a blue ribbon covering her âprivate partsâ, to me this is an indication that you should show off, like put on a pretty dress (or whatever clothing makes you feel the most comfortable) and get some beyonce on and pretend you are a victoria secrets angel, release the inner diva, do something bougie, get your nails done. Honestly you guys deserve the spotlight (if you want that) or either the right to feel confident, like just go dancing and let all that negative energy out through your movements. I wanted to have a look at the blue ribbon in more detail, blue is a colour that represents calmness and tranquility, so any activities that make you in a calm or soothing state will really help you too. It could be the classical calming activities such as guided meditation or a really nice hot bubble bath but my sister says she finds shopping to be very relaxing, so whatever hobby or thing makes you fall into this state could also really help increase the self-esteem here.Â

Pile 3 (Pasta)
Why are you so amazing
What traits make you, you
The Emperor: the emperor card represents structure, stability and authority. I feel like a lot of you picking this reading are quite shocked that this card came out, like I feel like you might not think of yourself as the most stable person (especially during these uncertain times) however I do not think you give yourself enough credit. You thrive under following a strict schedule and always follow through on your goals (for some reason I feel like you might have a very extensive writing blog, like your masterlists are all extremely organised). You naturally bring stability to others though, I keep getting the phrase âyou are my rockâ and you are always there if anyone needs you. Of course this doesnât make you a doormat by any means in fact quite the latter, the emperor is a man of action and leadership, you are a natural leader and always know the exact action to take in regards to a situation, a problem solver, people come to you for when they need to seek answers and get stuff done. The emperor serves the kingdom fairly thus he facts rationally in regards to making decisions. You are perhaps on the more logical side and are not too rash when it comes to your emotions, an aloof and calculated person, many people are in awe of your authoritative aura you have around you. You are extremely fair and just too, not a cold person at all, if someone wrongs you or your loved ones they are getting the treatment they deserve, we are so blessed to have you as an incredibly loyal person in this world. For some of you I highkey think you are into things that involve strategies or methodical thinking a couple of things that came to mind were Jigsaw puzzles, chess or solving rubik's cubes but sports and other hobbies do use this critical thinking as well, also I feel like you might be extremely passionate about it too. The emperor is ruled by aries so you are a person of action, you hate the idea of sitting around and I feel like you are never afraid to take on a challenge which is extremely admirable because many people are afraid of failure but you donât see it as that, you see it has another chance to prove yourself and honestly as I am typing this out I am feeling so motivated to do something badass. Best hype man period. (Also i couldnât help but think of commander erwin smith when i was writing this so maybe you kin this man a little bit)Â
Seven of Swords: now this card in tarot is basically referring to someone being a backstabbing little shit but actually I think this highkey is a very badass card to come out of the deck in regards to what makes you so amazing. This card indicates scheming and coming up with a strategy which to me empathises how intelligent you are. You have some extremely high IQ or you naturally incredibly street smart either way your intellect is something to be marveled. Unlike pile number 2 I would not say you are studious but are the type of person who can have like 2 hours sleep and come in and do a test and still pass with flying colours. With this card, I feel like you are two steps ahead of everyone else, I can imagine that you sort of go into this mind palace like sherlock holmes where you connect all the loose threads, out of this world deduction skills, like how do you do it I will never know??? Definitely very good actors, like you can turn on the charm if need be and honestly you guys are super badass, you are the one person I believe who could actually survive animes such as Attack on Titan or the promised neverland.
Seven of Pentacles: Whenever I see this card in a personal reading of me itâs the universeâs way of telling me to stop being an impatient bitch and keep working. You sure do put up with a lot of shit, I 100% think that within your friendship you are the voice of reason and honestly you deserve a nobel peace prize. Seven of Pentacles indicates a need for looking more into the future, a long term perspective, you deffo play the long game, thinking before you leap and taking into consideration the consequences of your actions. You know where to invest your time in and make excellent planners, the archetype that has come into my brain is the chess master, you just know how to move each piece or in this instance know exactly what endeavours to pursue in life. The lady on the card looks very at rest despite all the work she has done, to me this indicates that you make a lot of things look really easy, perhaps you have a niche hobby that you have perfected over the years or maybe you are naturally an elegant person. What I can tell you is that whatever sort of work you present is bougie as fuck, wherever it be a writing for tumblr or some artwork it always looks so damn professional (your talent makes me go on all starry eyed). Lastly, I feel like your motto is âslow and steady is the raceâ, you would rather take slightly longer on a project then finish it quickly with lots of errors, definitely a perfectionist.Â
Hidden Talent
Perhaps something you might have not been aware ofÂ
The Chariot: the first thoughts that came to mind is that you are incredibly hard working and have lots of self discipline, many people believe you were always just naturally good at stuff not seeing the sweat and tears that has got you to your amazing level now, for instance you are extremely charming however this wasnât a gift you were born with but something you learnt. The lady pictured on the card was wearing gold armour, the colour gold was really standing out to me so I decided to include this within the interpretation. The colour gold means triumph and success, to me this shows that when you put your talents to good use (towards a goal) the world becomes your oyster, the universe has gifted you the resources now you just have to pick up and use them. Also within the picture, there were 2 horses white and black, to me the colours represent divine feminie energy (emotions) and divine masculine energy (logic), the lady has control of the horses which shows that you have good control over both logic and emotions and donât let one over power the other one. The spiritual guide of the horse shows that you are actually an extremely passionate person, I feel like you may have a slightly apathetic appearance so people can get quite shocked when they see you all fired up and ready to go, but you are. You look towards the future and never let the past hold you back, you are always ready for battle and just like the chariot you charge on ahead never looking back. The chariot card is ruled by Cancer, I feel like you are a very good listener, people are surprised at how comforting you can actually be, you do look out for your friends and just want to make sure they are healthy and well. You truly treasure those close around you and will take the bullet for any of them, I literally feel so emotionally writing this and honestly words cannot describe how amazing you are.
How to love yourself
We all have our down days, so here are some tips and tricks to help us feel better
10 of Cups: this is literally the happy ending card (that's my nickname for it). 10 of cups represents family and emotional fulfilment. The first message that came to mind in regards to loving yourself was listing things that you are grateful for, as someone who has low self esteem issues I know this can be extremely difficult but you need to dig deep. If you have trouble starting off taking personality quizzes can be a good start, my personal faves our the myer briggs (do not take 16personalities it isnât accurate) and the jungian archetypes (i got the Jester), you can see some good traits from these quiz results which could help you start your list. What was really prominent on this card was the peace sign that was in the background, this could be an indication that may need to find peace with yourself or perhaps try to find peace around you, with the chaos that has been COVID you may have lost your balance in life, the cups arenât standing up right. Perhaps your sleep schedule has gone out the window or you are skipping lunch most days ( I am guilty of doing this too), try by fixing your daily routine, this could be by going to bed 1 hour earlier or maybe making sure you go outside at least once a day. I definitely think that will increase your overall morale and thus the confidence will make a comeback. Spending time with your family is another theme of this card, I understand that some family members can be a pain however talking to them just having a normal conversation could really help forge better relationships with them. Be happy with the here and now because contentment is right under your nose.Â

Sorry if this isn't the place to ask but I'm in need of advice. I have a canon character I truly adore, but I haven't gotten muse or any opportunity to write them at all. My blog is collecting dust and the fandom is kinda dead at this point. Not to mention, it's hard to find compatible writing partners, especially with how picky I can be. I'm honestly considering deactivating the blog (for the nth time), but I don't want to lose the writing I have. I know I could archive, but I hate having blogs just sitting around.
In short, I really want to write the muse/keep the blog but I'm not getting any incentive to do that.
Hello, Anon, itâs totally the place to ask!
I will say, though, that since finding and keeping muse can be flavored rather personally, I canât promise that what works for me is going to work for you. Iâll even confess that in over two decades, Iâve never personally lost muse. I donât know if it is due to underlying, neurodiverse style, fixating, or if it is due to keeping myself continually invested in both my muse and writing regardless of what else is going on. (Probably a combination of both, though, and the things I do to keep myself highly in touch with my muse Iâll be recommending.) Iâm definitely happy to try to help, however.
That really is a very frustrating spot to be in, wanting to write the muse and keep your blog active, but logging in every day to be reminded of what little reason you have to do so. Since weâre drawn to the characters we are for reasons of personal appeal and writing in itself is a pretty personal form of art, it can also feel depressing on top of the frustration.
However, thatâs also the good news, in my opinion, because your incentive here is, or can be, yourself.
You were drawn to this character because you connected with them. They mean something to you, you can relate to them, maybe they have qualities (good or bad) that you wish you could experience. Whatever it is, thereâs a reason why you had this draw. Writing is like that as well, thereâs a reason why this is a hobby that drew you, that you get enjoyment out of. Again, though all art (it doesnât matter if it is a hobby) has personal bits of the artist in it, writing is uniquely personal. When you write, youâre exploring thoughts and feelings, giving them life in a character that matters to you. I know, all of that sounds really convoluted and hokey, but itâs true.
And itâs good! That means you always have a reason to write and that you have the tools necessary to find and keep muse without any outside push necessary.
Iâd say, firstly, work on getting muse back.
Get back in touch with your muse the next time you feel a particularly strong urge to write. Instead of spending time trying to find people in a silent fandom or forcing yourself to write something you donât want to, just do some exercises that will help you get back into your muse.
I donât know what media type your character comes from, but especially if it is something like movie or show that you can have on in the background of what youâre doing, do that. If itâs a comic or a book, think about your favorite scene and read it over first. If youâve ever made some playlists for writing/your muse, you can always do that instead or as well. The point is to do something passively inspiring while you actively create. Now, that creating...
You want to do something that requires you to think about your muse so you can get in touch with them, not something that is going to make you feel overwhelmed and shut down. So, maybe donât pick writing prompts for this - you can work up to that. Try out headcanon and character development memes and other question lists instead for right now. Things you can scroll down a list of, find questions that jump out as interesting (or even simply answerable to you at this point, youâre jump-starting a dead battery, itâs alright) and answer them. You can also do something as simple as write down what you like best about the character or their story, or put down the basics of filling in missing information that has always bugged you.
The beauty of this is that it is all on your own terms, your only objective here is to answer what you want, as much as you want. You can stop any time, but you can also answer a single question for three hours, making it eight pages long if the inspiration strikes you. Itâs only about recharging your inspiration and establishing a connection with your character again. (This is also going to help you with getting back into writing, or approaching it for the first time, with a more internalized focus of interest.)
When you feel like youâve done that, you can branch out on these exercises more. Answer the memes more in-depth, answer more of them/the ones you donât have immediate answers for. You can also try writing out scenes from the characterâs canon from their perspective, if it wasnât already so, adding in their thoughts and feelings, or changing the scene in some ways that would be interesting to write out. This is the point where itâs a good idea to try a writing prompt or two, as well! Take the prompt as a sort of starter sentence from a mutual, youâve got the situation, fill in with your muse.
Write when you feel like writing. The RPC is great at saying this when it comes to muns not wanting to write, but kind of ignores the other side of the equation. The side where you want to write, have the inspiration and muse to do so, but it might not be the best time. As in, youâre not home/wherever you usually write, with whatever device you tend to write on accessible. No, youâre not going to be able to get as much done, but you can write without the usual situation and device regardless. You can write a scene or ideas down using your phone or tablet, or go old school and use a notebook. If youâre at work and your job isnât applicable to being able to get down a single sentence, that still doesnât mean you have to wait 8+ hours to get home; while youâre taking your break, write a little bit. It is a break, and writing is your hobby, it isnât work. Itâs good to do things you enjoy on breaks, and far more fulfilling to have also accomplished something you happen to enjoy.
Not writing when you have the drive to do, putting it off and holding it in until âthe perfect moment,â is a great way to lose your inspiration and never actually have that moment. If you feel like doing it, that means it is the perfect moment. Life is restricting, donât impose even more restrictions on yourself by having to be at home, in a specific spot, with a specific device, at a specific time, on a specific day. Was that annoying repetition? Youâre right, it was. And thatâs how your creative mind processes all the crap piled onto it that doesnât allow for creativity.
Now, the other problem, the fandom situation.
There isnât anything you can do about that, to be absolutely honest. Iâm not going to blow smoke and tell you to be positive, wait it out, maybe the fandom will spring to life again. You know, maybe it will...but you could be waiting literal decades for that to happen. Not cool. Please, take my word for that, itâs personal experience that it blows even more than you imagine it will.
What you can do is take the matter into your own hands in other ways; putting yourself out there with more availability in multiple ways.
Are you a single-fandom blog, or are you crossover friendly? If youâre not crossover friendly, try to think of a single, relatively popular fandom that you enjoy. Donât look at it like a hassle, but rather, just another creative exercise. A serious pitfall of creating alternate universe versions of muses is to take the simplest route, merely picking something you want from that other universe and applying it to your muse with no relevant changes that would naturally occur from it. It isnât just reductive as hell, itâs not remotely creative, itâs like sticking a sticker on your museâs forehead and saying thatâs a whole different muse. Itâs neither attractive to potential partners nor going to sustain your own interest for long. You want this to be a passionate investment on your own end, for yourself.
What not to do:
Letâs say the fandom you picked to do crossovers with is based around magic, the main characters are witches, and they are divided into factions based on how their magical talents display and develop. Not only do you decide to make your muse a witch, you pick the most badass faction. Itâs the one full of assassins and action and (metaphorically or literally) sex appeal. Well, thatâs also going to be the most popular faction in the fandom. That means there will not only be plenty of big name canons there but also that thereâs going to be a plethora of OCs designed just for this universe...and other crossovers from other currently active fandoms.
While that might sound like itâs great for maximizing interaction chances, itâs really not when youâre just starting somewhere new with a character from another fandom that might not be known or liked. It can also take a minute in another fandomâs RPC to identify where the good partners are. Every now and then, it is the most popular and over-populous era/faction/etc., but most of the time, it isnât. People who write with considerable dedication and talent fairly rarely are in the popular kids club even in their fandom choices. By inserting yourself into that area, you might be bypassing (and being bypassed) by better partners on the assumption that their characters are simply going to bore you to death since theyâre not within the scope of your focal point.
Itâs not a situation of not being allowed to be picky, you not only have that right regardless of your situation, you also should be. This is not a âbeggars canât be choosersâ situation, youâre not beholden to anyone on the basis of being new and bored. However, some of my best, and longest lasting, writing partners over all 23 years Iâve been RPing didnât/donât fit with all the exact surface details that automatically draw my interest. It is as true within my own fandom as it is in dealing with crossovers. Opposites (with enough similarities) really do attract and work out well together!
Donât judge and write people off for anything that isnât an issue of compatibility with your muse, your writing, or yourself. Decline someone because they do one line only and you are novella, they write topics that are upsetting to you, you can see no way your muse and theirs can interact without instant murder, or because you cannot stand writing with someone who is pulling 90% aesthetics and purple prose. Not because their muse is a witch who uses life-based magic, loves nature, is a healer, and into their health...while your muse in this AU is all about the death, only appreciates an urban environment and is grossed out by animals, kills as an occupation, lives on cheeseburgers and caffeine. You see what Iâm saying? Donât limit yourself unnecessarily!
What to do:
Did you consider if, in that hypothetical idea of a fandom, your muse based on their purely canon self would even fit into that faction? Or is it just something you wanted to see? If you didnât consider this, or it was the latter, fix that. Thatâs bad.
If youâre not absolutely dead set on that and only that, think about what really does fit the muse better. Maybe, they would be better as a healer, someone who messes with the very fabric of reality, or someone who manipulates natural elements at will. Then again, they might not even be a witch. They could be more mundane in terms of power, but more accurate and interesting as a normal, human (or whatever). They could even be greatly opposed to the use of magic and witches. Use your museâs original canon as a base to decide these things.
If you are absolutely dead set on it, though, you have a lot of work to do making the character into what amounts to a markedly different one while still retaining some recognizable aspects of themselves. Consider what events, in this new universe of fandom, might have happened to alter the character thus. Keep in mind that even small changes can have great consequences in a characterâs development, and you might need to think about the myriad ways in which that can display, how it changes still more things for this character.
While that job becomes so much more intense when you havenât planned out a path that matches your museâs canon characterization at all, it is still an important part of constructing an AU, of any kind, in general. Ask yourself what experiences led to the character you know as you already know them (including your own headcanons, yes). Then, find similar possible experiences within your new fandom verse that can have the same effect. Again, though, itâs important to understand that you are never going to have an identical set of experiences, so you need to explore relevant changes still.
When you do this, youâre allowing your muse to more seamlessly fit into this other universe in a fleshed out, interesting way. Interesting both new partners and yourself.
Okay, next obnoxious question from me! Do you have multiple verses, or are you single-verse?
Whether you are already exploring new fandoms or not, by creating a variety of verses for others to interact with, youâre increasing your chances for interest and activity. When you have a verse from a different fandom you can then, additionally, advertise your presence in both that fandomâs tags when you do a promo or applicable open starter and on active RPer lists for that fandom.
Every popular fandom has such lists. You can get on them by messaging/sending an ask to the blog or by reblogging their post to be added, following the directions. I havenât seen one yet that doesnât allow for crossovers. You simply have to tag it as stated in the post, such as âyour canonâs name here - original fandom name - crossover.â By tagging your open starter or promo as â-insert fandom here- rpâ and â-fandom here- open starterâ you allow people in that fandom to find you to interact. Either way is excellent for getting started in totally new places with a character others might be unfamiliar with.
Please remember that if you tag a promo as âpromo,â itâll not show up in searches off of your blog. You know, where it actually needs to be searched. Thanks, tumblr, for being janky! Being more specific as to the fandom and character will help others actually find you. Donât shoot yourself in the foot by tagging it as âpromo.â
Make your verses accessible on your blog itself, in the nature of those verses, and how you set up your page or post that lists them.
Donât put any page behind an impossible or complicated aesthetic. You really shouldnât anyway, but when youâre needing interactions, itâs actively hurting your chances. Many people donât want to have to play a game with your theme, itâs a turn off. Try a pinned post that lists all of your links to important pages like rules, verses, and bio instead. It means that, even from the dash, that information can quickly be found while other muns are first interested, and also that anyone who might be using the app can access it more expediently. (Iâm genuinely not a fan or big supporter of doing google docs for rules, verses, bios, etc., as it forces people off site, so I canât personally say, in good conscious and honesty, that Iâd recommend it, but you do you!) You want to keep things quickly accessible is the idea here; when people are interested, you want to catch them right then and there before they have a chance to forget and lose your blog.
As to the nature of the verses themselves, give people real options. Donât have 20 verses that all read same way. Same themes, plot possibilities, and backstories, or incredibly similar names. Have a diverse list of verses that can act as foundations for a variety of different muns. As many fandoms as you can reasonably have a good portrayal of, and different types of fandoms; not all the same genre (all fantasy, all horror, all scifi). Verses where your muse has substantially different goals, occupations, and other life situations that will involve another muse; donât make your muse A Warrior⢠in every verse, you can keep plenty of those aspects without being that literal. People love âmodernâ verses set in our own universe and, usually, in our own era. That doesnât mean you have to go stereotypical or otherwise bore yourself by doing the standard âhigh school/college verse,â for instance. You donât even have to designate that sort of thing, let alone make it the focus; simply create the verse by considering what your character really would be like if they existed within your reality.
As a final note on verses as pertains to this point, when youâre doing crossover verses, itâs alright to do some verses where your muse from their own canon existence somehow ends up teleported or whatever to another fandomâs reality, or even our own. Just donât make every verse like this, it puts the onus of a great deal of creativity and effort onto the other mun by default; your muse has cluelessly dropped into the universe, and while it is high drama time for you, the other mun has to babysit, educate, deal with fallout, etc.
On making the list of your verses accessible, you want to focus on ease of browsing and not being overwhelming. People tend to look through a verse page and not read every verse listed, rather, they look at the titles and breakdowns to see if it is of interest, then read it. Donât try to make everyone read them all, it isnât going to happen, and shouldnât change your effort any as the right people are going to find the verses that interest them...if you make it clear and easy enough.
Have a basic format you stick to, firstly. I do it this way: small verse banner, title of verse (linked to its overall tag so that muns can look through the tag at headcanons, aesthetics, pictures of the FC, and threads), muse age/age range, small blurb, possible triggers found uniquely or just heavily within this verse. In that order, one following the other in a simple, but pleasing way. Below that, is a more in depth breakdown of the âverse canon.â Sometimes, that is giving a brief rehashing of canon itself and anywhere my muse differs, be it in this verse only or overall, ending with where my muse is in this verse. Not literally where. I mean their present occupation, emotional and general state in life. At the very end, I provide any other relevant links and/or an expansion on the triggers mentioned at the top of the verse description if theyâre that serious/recurrent so that muns can decide this isnât the verse for them. I happen to have a potentially triggering muse, triggering verses, and writing triggering topics, though. Thatâs not something everyone needs to do.
Secondly, group your verses in a sensible way. I do my short list of default verses first. (And, I do mean short, you donât want this be any more than four or five, it is overwhelming right out of the gate.) For me, that is two default verses of canon at different points on the timeline, one default AU that is a bit of a reversal of canon, and one default âmodernâ verse. Then, I list the verses that are in line with the altered canon one, just different possibilities, changes, points in history. After that, the different âmodernâ verse options. Then, verses for other fandoms, the crossover verses. And so on. This way, a potential partner can find the type of verse that might appeal to them and have an easier time picking from those possibilities and getting ideas.
Lastly, donât be so succinct that you give too little information and underwhelm, but also donât be so excessive that it takes all of the mystery of interaction away and overwhelms someone. It can be a difficult balance to strike, and some verses require more information than others, just experiment a bit. Additionally, itâs fine to link to pertinent information for the other mun to view aside from this, but donât just link people to a fandom wiki as your âdescription/bio.â That isnât giving information on how you write this muse, approach this fandom, or what another mun can otherwise expect. Keeping your descriptions interesting is important, youâre not giving a boring lecture, youâre trying to inform someone while making them hyped for their choices. Itâs more interesting, and informative, to read if you do them with an ear to the âtoneâ of your muse in that verse. Is it a sad one? Sound that way. These can, indeed, function as snippets of your writing, so be sure you are writing them with the same care you should be giving your replies; spellcheck, good word flow and use, mind the grammar, and read over what youâve written for common, easy mistakes.
Again, by giving a genuine variety of verses to choose from, youâre allowing for a greater reach in potential partners. Everyone from those still in your original fandom to those in new ones, all the way to fandomless muses will be able to interact with you this way.
Finally, in regards to what you can change or do when youâre in a dead fandom and seeking interactions; make sure you are increasing your reach by using proper tags, being honest about what and how you write, and donât wait for others to stumble across you.
When you use tags properly, youâre increasing your chances of being seen at all. Every time you post something at all applicable on your blog, tag it with relevant things. Tag as described above with whatever fandom it is and âRP,â your characterâs name, âopen RP,â character name and RP, indie RP, open starter, and so on. Be sure you are optimizing your tags by placing the most relevant to finding you in the first four, those are what show up in site-wide searches only. Anything after that isnât going to appear in a search across all tumblr.
By tagging your characterâs name, as a canon, you should know that you are likely to get personal blog interaction. Iâm pretty against being nasty to personal blogs for no reason, as I donât appreciate personal and fandom blogs being shitty to me for the sole reason that I am an RPer. Please, use clear, short, attention getting directions for them. If you want no interactions with them, put right in the description of your blog âRP blog, does not interact with personal blogs.â When you say things like, âpersonals dni,â or âpersonals blocked,â youâre not doing anyone any favors. Personal blogs often donât even know what the hell a personal blog even is! They do not denote themselves this way, to a personal blog, theyâre just a blog. By designating first that you are an RP blog, youâre making it clearer that theyâre the personal; theyâre obviously not an RP blog, so that must make them a personal. Follow this up in a pinned post, right on top. Give a note to personal blogs that describes them as âany blog that isnât an RP blogâ first, then either tell them in brief what they can and canât do or that you donât interact and will block.
I donât recommend taking your blog off of being findable, however. Thatâs alright once you have the RP activity you are looking for, but until then, itâs working against you. Other RP blogs cannot easily find you either, they will only find you if youâre on a list or appear in their recommended blogs, if you interact with a mutual, or are recommended by a mutual. Youâre not just lessening your chances of personal blogs finding you, so if you have that turned off, turn it back on.
Donât entirely rely on others finding you regardless, though. You canât be 100% passive when you have no interactions, and by relying solely on serendipity youâre far less likely to get them. I know that everyone here is terminally shy, but seriously, you have to do more than put your silent will into the universe that someone perfect find you. You have to make this happen. Once you get a few people, you can afford to be more passive. Not only do you have some people to write with, you will be more visible to their mutuals, and more established as a presence. Iâm not saying this is easy, or that it will become easy, not awkward or stressful, if you have a legitimate issue behind the shyness. Just that it is the only way to really proceed, and I believe you can do it!
So, go looking for interesting blogs. Be crossover and OC friendly (again, this doesnât mean âaccept everyone,â there are valid reasons for not accepting people you wonât work out with that have nothing to do with their fandom or being an OC), and search those fandomâs RPCs, following any blogs you think you might work out with upon reading their rules and other pages. Search for fandomless OCs and do the same thing. Fandomless OCs arenât just floating around in the ether, they just werenât created expressly for a particular fandom and within its confines. What is excellent about that is their ability to have a wide variety of verses and many possibilities to fit into any fandom or verse. So, donât count them out solely on the basis of being an OC and fandomless. It doesnât mean what people seem to think it does!
Do not stop at having followed 50 blogs. I mean, other than that you probably should stop following people for a bit. That you should do, as you need to be building writing relationships here, not following so many people that you cannot get to them. Donât just stop at the follow, though. Since youâve read their rules and information like a good RP partner, you should have some idea of what their interests are and where they align with yours, as well as how they prefer to be approached, if they accept memes right away to start, need plotting, have a rules password. When theyâve followed you back, proceed with interaction!
Ask if theyâd like to plot when they have time, youâre really looking forward to writing with them. But...have some idea of a plot, please. It is a serious turn off to have someone message you wanting to plot, only to reply and get âlol I donât have any ideas, anything works for me/whatever you want to do.â That isnât plotting, itâs one party coming up with ideas and constructing a plot while theyâre being told âIâm fine with anything.â That may be true, but itâs disheartening and a red flag for many people. If you genuinely canât come up with anything, pick verses that match up well and suggest doing something within them.
âWhen you have the time, would you be interested in discussing writing? I was looking at your verses, and I think your verse -name- and mine, -verse name-, would mesh well.â Is a good way to start. Once you have a discussion flowing about the verses meshing and the muses, itâs typically easy to organically develop some plot ideas to go off of.
If both you and the other mun are alright with plot-free interaction and memes, you can send a meme any time. If you canât find any memes on their blog, look for a wishlist or navigation page that shows you the tags for memes/wishlist. Still canât find it? Ask them if theyâve got a wishlist or meme tag you can look through.
Additionally, if open starters are a thing you both do and are alright with, find some of theirs and respond. Post your own, tag it appropriately to be found in general and on your blog, and reblog it once or twice. Donât excessively reblog it, and donât get upset on the dash if no one interacts with it or any memes you reblog. Both are demanding to outright guilting, and not a good way to get partners. Just provide them with the ability to easily interact by making the posts available in the first place and by making them findable on your blog search and navigation.
Provide something for potential partners to see. Since you said you already do have writing, thatâs great! Thatâs content on your blog that your partners can view. However, since youâre also having the issues youâve stated, itâs likely that you havenât many new posts. Show that you are active, interested in being here, and how you write your muse (and in general) by posting some newer content. For original content, do a headcanon or some meta, or post about new verses you are adding, the changes on your blog, a promo. For reblogs, things pertaining to your muse like canon imagery, fanart, quotes from canon or that generally express your muse, and aesthetics relevant to your muse are all excellent things to queue.
Use that queue. Not only do very few people appreciate having dash spam of similar content for the comparatively short time you might be around, but also, running these things on a queue means you spread that out for maximum view. While there are hours of heavier activity, youâll have mutuals who are on at unusual hours due to their life and preferences or their timezone. This way, youâre not appearing inactive, if not outright invisible, to those mutuals. Itâs not a bad idea to use a queue tag so that people know if they interact with a post thatâs been queued, you might be here to quickly respond.
Ultimately, to fix your fandom and lacking partners problem, you just need to up your availability and reach beyond that fandom alone. Be proactive in following and approaching, decline blogs based on not working out only, utilize tags and fandom RPer lists, have everything on your blog easy to follow and not overwhelming, and have your verses meet as wide of a range of people as possible while also not being overwhelming.
Try updating your promo, as well, by the way. Theyâre not dead, they just really tanked when people kept making them based solely on aesthetic principle instead of being at all informative about the muse. They do seem to be coming back, so itâs a thing to consider.
Yes, make it visually appealing, it will draw people to reading it. No, do not just use a song lyric or quote with words highlighted linking your rules, verses, bio. Tell people basic info like the age of your muse and yourself, if you are multiverse and multiship, your museâs canon verse and a couple of big interest verses of other major fandoms or themes that tend to be of interest to people, and what kind of RP you write - one line/para/multipara/novella. Absolutely give links to rules, verses, bio, and either memes, wishlist, or open starters, but give them just like that; make it very clear what this link is to. Put a very short statement of interest on there denoting that youâre expanding to new fandoms and looking for writing partners.
Do not sound desperate, demanding, or devaluing of yourself. Donât say shit like âbecause my fandom is dead,â âtrying this before I give up and delete my blog,â or âI suck at interaction/writing/ooc interaction/being a person but welp giving it a try, so follow and hit that heart.â (Conversely, calling yourself derogatory things and implying that your partners are too, such as the âweâre all just losers hereâ shit.) All of the above are not attractive, and theyâre not even surprising enough to stand out anymore. Itâs another reason to scroll right by that promo because nothing at all was different or of interest.
And as a wrap-up/rehash of the first topic, getting muse back: try starting over at the beginning by approaching the media involving your muse that has really stuck with you emotionally over the years, and exploring and developing your muse again.
Donât tell yourself you can only write, for example, at home, on the laptop, after 7pm, and with a pop toy staring at you. The best thing about writing, as opposed to so many other hobbies, is that you can do it anywhere! So, do that. Do it any time you both feel the inspiration to do so and arenât going to get fired or expelled for it. This isnât work, itâs something enjoyable that does take effort (like literally all creative activities and skills do), but approaching it as though you need to follow novel writing advice from someone who has never published anything of note and isnât you on the internet, with strict rules for success makes it feel that way. So does being frustrated with a dead fandom, no interaction. Itâs disheartening, feels as annoying and fruitless as work often does. You probably need to break out of that mindset, and you can only do it by beginning to allow yourself to be creative on your own terms, entirely for yourself.
Do write simple things at first that you are inspired to do (you canât get a scene out of your head, or a bit of dialogue), and/or headcanon/character development memes and question lists. Build from there as you get back in touch with your muse, writing things primarily or entirely for yourself still. Expanding on headcanons, doing some meta, or maybe writing out a missing piece of canon or what youâd be interested in seeing happen in canon if some event was altered.
Doing this sort of thing, you are getting in touch with your muse again and back into the real spirit of writing creatively, simultaneously.
Whatever you find most inspiring, do it. If itâs watching the movie or show again, do that, have it on while you write or simply think on the characterâs actions, thoughts, and emotions during those scenes. If itâs reading the material again, do that, and read snippets of personal importance before you write. Maybe itâs some past playlists you can have on while writing, or even while youâre cleaning, walking the dog, driving or riding somewhere. It could even be your own previous writing! Go ahead and re-read that, it sounds like you still appreciate it, and thatâs truly promising. If you find that youâre horrified by some of the things youâve written in the more distant past, hey...thatâs not just valid as hell, itâs natural. You know what else it is? An inspiration. You can clearly see that you could do better, that means you now know how to do better and are ready to do so. Validate yourself, prove it to yourself by rewriting or fixing something.
Donât delete the blog or archive it. It is unpleasant to have a dead blog around, but donât keep it dead. Use the same blog and simply transition it into wider things that will net you more partners and the interactions you deserve.
Look, even if you werenât the most popular blog in your fandom before it went quiet, you really appreciated the blog, muse, and writing you were doing. Youâve defined that it wasnât something you did to cause this situation, you just had the shit luck we all run into eventually of being in a fandom that ran out of material or interest. People are really fickle, so by taking a wider approach and fixing on the writing and muse instead of fandom now, youâre stopping this from repeating. Seriously, on a long enough timeline, every fandom dies or goes into hibernation. If you make a whole new blog with a different muse, it is going to happen again eventually.
So, donât feel like youâre ridiculously clinging to the past and need to move on, youâre just sticking to something and can continue to stick to it through the next five fandom deaths. Just because it is the most popular thing to do to drop muses, constantly add new ones, and have this attitude that you can âblog refreshâ your way out of recurrent, and inherent, problem doesnât mean it is actually the right thing to do. Itâs not even the most sensible, and certainly not the best thing to do with anything youâve spent time and effort on.
Thatâs your incentive; yourself, the time and care youâve put in, and your continued interest in writing and the muse. Youâll find good people, and bluntly, everyone else can fuck right off when youâre incentivized by yourself. It becomes a self-fulfilling activity at that point, I swear, and it feels really nice.
Just get back in touch with your muse and writing itself so that you can begin to expand and start interacting again!

Ocean Eyes, Golden Mind
Dude, itâs just a frat party. Who doesnât go to frat parties?
The message flashes Neilâs screen white, its sender none other than his roommate Nicky who is supposed to study for an upcoming test in Public Policy in exactly nineteen hours. Thatâs what Neil writes him. Nickyâs reply comes instantly.
Those who study tend not to party. You know. Like you.
Neil leaves him on read. If he wants to party, heâll lock himself inside his room, two bottles of Jack Danielâs by his side while watching every existing compilation of cats attacking people on the small screen of his phone. He knows how to have a good time, alright. Not everyone has to set their scale like Nicky: More than once Neil has been the spectator of him coming back to the dormitory completely wasted, but still eager enough to get frozen waffles from the fridge. Being too drunk to put them in the toaster, he usually just climbs up to his top bunk and puts them between his thighs to eat them partially defrosted. Itâs this fragile line between genius and stupidity that has Neil doubting if he should fill in a request for changing roommates or just live with the fact that Nicky Hemmick is one special kind of man.
So instead of spending his night curled into himself, wall against his back and eyes on every stranger distributing awful shots, Neil sits at the Math Tutoring Centre on the west side of the campus and gives group tutoring sessions.
Math comes to Neil like breathing. Like Bertrand Russel said, not only does Mathematics possess truth, but supreme beautyâa beauty cold and austere, like that of a sculpture. It is sublimely pure, and capable of a stern perfection such as only the greatest art can show. It is poetryâelegant and deepâof logical ideas to create harmony in a written line. Once he tried to explain that to Nicky over microwaved Mac n Cheese with Girls running in the background, clearly overestimating him, because Nicky only stared into space for a few seconds, and replied, âYou really need to get laid, man.â
Reluctant at the beginning, Neil only agreed to join the Tutor Program because his math professor promised to throw in some extra cash. Something about raising the graduate numbers in order to get the board of education off his back. Thatâs where Neilâs jurisdiction of interest ends, but he has enjoyed it more than expectedthe empty hallways, the harsh light of the ceiling lamps, the smell of chalk, the faint echoes of students still lingering in classrooms. Thereâs this magic about the Palmetto State University at nightâa vulnerability that can only live once the sun sets behind the horizon. When else would he find a kid sleeping under a table in the library, or seniors breaking down in tears for exact 10 minutes before continuing their studies as if nothing has happened.
Thereâs another reason heâd rather spend his evening on campus, one Nicky doesnât need to know because then Neil wonât hear the end of it. That reason being 5â0ââ tall chemistry prodigy Andrew Minyard, sitting in the last row of Neilâs math sessions each Friday. He only knows about him thanks to Nickyâs never-ending complaints, but that never really stopped him from throwing a few or more glances in Andrewâs direction. Just curiosity, of course.
So when he stands in front of the blackboard now, putting away his lesson papers which are full of numbers and equationsâthe kind that has enough letters to look like sentencesâhe feels dozens eyes burn holes in the back of his neck, and one pair belongs to Andrew. No one asks why heâs here, but everyone knows he doesnât need to be.
In his one year of giving tutoring sessions, Neil has learnt that exactly three types of students exist: Students who are really good, certainly not in need of the extra lessons, but going anyway for some extra ego-buff and unnecessary brain-flexing. The second type is students who are okay, doing their tasks, following the lesson, not really attracting any attention safe for some crude jokes. The last type has Neil questioning his belief in the educational system of the whole state because he doesnât understand how they are allowed inside the sacred halls of PSU.
Andrew is a special type on his ownâthe enigma that keeps Neil awake at two in the morning because heâs desperate to solve it, but without knowing where to start, heâs just running in circles. His fingers itch to solve an equation with multiple variables, to find the solution to a problem and get it off his mind.
He doubts it will be this easy with Andrew.
âBefore we continue to look at scalar products in R- and C-vector spaces, weâll consider bilinear and semi-bilinear forms in general, and link them to matrices for their representation to chosen bases.â Neilâs hand flies across the board, leaving letters and parenthesizes that look like bizarre drawingsâart in its most complex form. Once heâs finished, he takes a step away, wipes the chalk on his fingers off on his jeans, and turns to his audience. âWhat happens to this equation with the semi-bilinear form Ď?â
Two hands shoot up immediately. He ignores them; no need to feed their ego, and instead picks a freshman whoâs been staring at his phone for the last ten minutes. Making way, Neil moves back to the studentâs seats and leans against a desk.
Is it the farthest place away from the board? It is.
Is it the closest that will get him to Andrew? Might be so.
It certainly gives him a good look at what Andrewâs been doing since Neil startedâand that is not solving a single task on the paper Neil has handed out at the beginning of the session. Andrew, apparently bored before it even started, has taken out a slip of paper with a sudoku puzzle on it and is solving it against his leg, completely linked out of the instruction.
Neil tries not to stare too much at Andrewâs bare arms, and instead looks back at the board.
âDoes that look right?â the freshmanâRhys or Rheeze or something like thatâasks, turning around.
Neil narrows his eyes and squints at the board. He canât make out a single thing, and thatâs bad, yes, but his feet betray him, staying rooted where they are instead of reducing the distance until he can distinguish Ď from a.
âWhere does the l come from,â he asks. Multiple heads snap in his direction.
âThatâs a j, Josten,â someone says from the other side of the room.
Neil squints harder. âAnd the u?â
  âA Îź.â
âNo, itâs a v,â a girl next to Neil says, and thatâs when the everyone starts shouting about whatâs on the board and what isnât.
Neil bears it for a solid minute before he surrenders. He pulls a small case from his pocket, opens it. Puts his glasses on.
  The whole room goes silent.
Neil checks the equation, nods. âCorrect. Whoâs next?â
Multiple people stir, one manages to get up, and walks straight into a table leg. Neil questions that âstraightâ, because only then the freshman guy stops staring at Neil and steers his attention to the equation on the blackboard.
It was a bad idea, and Neil still hates Allison for forcing him to go. Sheâd dragged him to the doctor last week to get his eyes tested, annoyed by his never-ending questions of âWhatâs written there?â or âIs that a six or an eight?â.
âTheyâre my eyes,â Neil had said, arms crossed as he sat in the office and waited for his turn.
âAnd itâs me who has to see your ugly squinting face,â Allison had replied.
Two hours later Neil had finally his prescriptions but that didnât mean he was free from Allisonâs clutches. He would have been fine with some glasses from the dollar store, but she insisted that if heâs going to wear them more than once a day, he should get designer glassesâthin frames and a color that matches his copper hair. She suggested gold. Neil picked black. The look of disappointment on Allisonâs face was something that deserved its own painting to commemorate it. But once theyâd finally chosen the right pair, sheâd given him the very same look most of the students are giving him nowâa mix between slight awe and disbelief as if heâs grown a second head. Or owes them all a monthâs worth of lunch money.
âWell,â had Allison said at least, turning away to pack up and go home. âTigers have their stripes. I have my eyeliner.â She threw him another scrutinizing look over her shoulder. âYou have your glasses.â If it was supposed to make him feel better, it didnât work, and right now he regrets nothing more than allowing Allison to drag him around.
Neilâs eyes land on Andrewâs sudoku puzzle, now half-hidden under his papers, and he sees now that he isnât even solving the thing, but simply coloring in the empty squares.
He takes a second too long and meets Andrewâs eyes staring back at him.
âProblem, Josten?â Andrew asks with a blank expression, tapping the end of his pen against his monochrome picture of black and white squares.
Neil wants to see how far he can push until he walks against a brick wall and breaks something. He returns his gaze to the board but feels Andrewâs eyes like a solid touch on the back of his neck.
After the session, the students hurry outside, still throwing curious glances over their shoulders at Neil and if he could merge with the back of his chair and disappear forever, that would be totally okay. It isnât until a shadow looms above him that he looks up from his own homework and draws in a careful breath when Andrew towers above him.
Neil raises an eyebrow. âProblem, Minyard?â
Andrewâs face gives nothing away, and when he stretches out a hand, Neil doesnât flinch. His glasses slip off easily, held between Andrewâs thumb and index finger.
âNicky told me heâs trying to convince you to join him tomorrow,â Andrew says. Neil needs a second, because that is the most words heâs heard out of Andrewâs mouth.
âI have no reason to go,â Neil says, his eyes jumping up and down, from the equation that makes his sight blur to Andrew leaning his slender waist against the table.
âYou have one now.â Itâs barely neutral enough to not sound like a threat, but Neil stares at Andrew nonetheless, and when he puts Neilâs glasses on, Neilâs heart does a weird stutter. Heâs still starring at Andrew when he leaves the room, and no, his eyes donât stray, they stay on Andrewâs broad back, and if they dip lower itâs because of the light.
Once heâs alone, Neil takes a deep breath, exhales slowly. Puts his head in his arms and counts to ten in French first, then again in German. His heart still does this weird thing, trying to bruise his ribs from the inside.
He gets his phone, texts Nicky heâll go to the frat party tomorrow and puts it away, not interested in his roommateâs reply. Thereâs still the equation he needs to solve, but for the first time Neilâs heart isnât really into math, and he is quite alright with it.

The Johnlock Conspiracy Conspiracy
First of all this is going to be building off a point first cast into relief for me by Sarah Zâs video on The Johnlock Conspiracy. She is both directly connected with the experience of this space and did the research into the actual history of the people involved, a sort of on-the-spot observer recounting her experiences ethnographically. If you want a longer form deep dive on what The Johnlock Conspiracy is, check out that video. I will be providing a quick summary.
Iâm also going to talk about fanagement, which I wrote about last year, which is about the way that fan engagement was seen as being a thing that corporate entities could deliberately engage for commercial ends. Fanagement isnât necessarily an inherently evil or corrupting thing, but itâs something to know about as something that exists, and knowing it exists can colour your relationship to the media created in response to fanagement.
Thereâs this idea of âThe Johnlock conspiracy.â
In the agonisingly mediocre BBC mystery drama Sherlock that ran from who cares to also who cares, starring in the loosest sense of the word Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman (a man ârenownedâ for this, The Office and the Hobbit trilogy, on a scale of poisonous influence to actual outright evil), as a modern day re-imagining of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson that has some interesting ideas that it absolutely does not use well, mysteries that are not interesting and a relationship tension that was making itself up as it went along. Much ink has been spilled about how this series is not very good, and thatâs good, because itâs a very expensively made bad series that banks on the reliable draw of the same fistful of boring privilege.
Part of what made it popular, sort of, was the tension of the relationship between John and Sherlock. See, they were both men, you see, and what if they kissed.
Now, tumblr is, by volume, mostly connections to other parts of tumblr. If you make something popular, it becomes amplified and exploded and brought to the attention of others and curated into lists. Content that gets shared is the very sinew of what Tumblr is, which means that doing things people share around is a strange form of primacy on the site. Making content is powerful, heady, druglike. Commanding curation where you determine what does and does not get shared is even moreso. It is a space for an audience that is engaged deeply with the concept of being engaged, and in this space, fandom happened.
Thereâs not a lot of Sherlock. There were big gaps between the seasons. When a season came out, it did not explain itself or deliver on its promise at all. It is, as Iâve said, bad. But it was well made and used actors youâd heard of and was treated as being prestigious and so, when the show came out, and because people liked the idea of what it could be, fandom struck on a conspiracy:
What if this terrible show is secretly great?
And I understand the impulse. Itâs heart to a lot of fandom. I canât possibly have spent this time and energy on something I donât like, it must be that the thing I like is secretly this thing I really like. And so scaffolding comes out to buttress the idea. Weâre not taught that fandom is right â weâre taught that fandom is something that justifies itself by being right. If you have a story in your heart about a Dark Fuckprince and his soft bean injured Watson, that story is real and right, and doesnât need the official endorsement of the BBC to be good.
Without that armour of love, though, instead the fandom turned into this endless oroborous of hostility centered around three people, who seem to just be total dickheads, great job you. This resulted in the blossoming of what was known as âthe Johnlock Conspiracy,â where through thousands of pages of well intentioned fumes, these fans huffed themselves into believing that Steven Moffat and Mark Gattis were secretly building up to exactly what they wanted, and they were the smartest people ever for noticing it. The lack of payoff of their beliefs and the active hostility Moffat had to their ideas and positions in person, that was all part of the conspiracy.
Oh, by the way, that idea â conspiracy â is when you have an unfalsifiable conjecture. If you canât prove it false, no matter what, thatâs when youâre dealing with a conspiracy theory.
The dramatic conclusion to all this was the series ended, their conspiracy was wrong, they theorycrafted themselves a few more months of content, and then most people let it drop.
But what if I told you there was a conspiracy?
Because there was. It just wasnât the conspiracy they thought.
See, a conspiracy is a real thing: itâs a secret plan to do something harmful. And the BBC, since they published the work that Matt Hill described in Torchwoods Trans-Transmedia: Media Tie-Ins and Brand Fanagement, worked with the parameters of their experiment aggressively.
The idea, as I outlined in my article about Fanagement was that making the program so it could engage fans directly, and give fans feelings of creative ownership over the work would drive viewership and the kinds of engagement they liked (like, paying for things). Fanagement sought to make media âgifableâ â low saturation backgrounds with cuts of under a second so you could break a scene apart easily and conveniently. It wanted to make fan media easy to make, and to minimise hard declarative statements.
The lessons learned from this paper included things like ship teasing as a deliberate task â and I do mean teasing, with the idea that you had to do it in deniable and ambiguous ways. Making things definite wouldnât get you as much fan engagement as keeping things ambiguous, because fans would make an inference based on what you show them, talk about it, then other fans would watch it again to make sure they could argue with you about it.
A mystery show like Sherlock was perfect for this kind of treatment. Treating the series as if there was some really deep, thoughtful question at the heart of it meant that there was always a reason to keep from ârevealingâ the secret of the story, to string the audience along, like theyâd believe or tolerate it, if it was all in service of a clever explanation. You get it, right? After all, we gave you all the clues.
The toxic fandom of Sherlock did not form as much as it was fostered.
A lesson from this experience, a lesson easily escaping notice, is that itâs not that âfandoms are all the same.â They really arenât. They are wildly varying in the terms of their problems and those problems root causes. What they tend to have in common is dynamics, but those dynamics are expressed in a lot of different ways. Itâs not that âfandomsâ naturally become toxic and awful. There are fandoms that are generally, quite nice, and they tend to be that way because of the values of the central movers and shakers and the conscious willingness of people who perceive themselves as part of the fandom as taking care of it. The dynamic is the same â you have common nexuses of community that people interact with â and the kind of behaviour thatâs acceptable and reasonable is filtered through them. If the idea of asking people to modify their behaviour or respect peopleâs boundaries is seen as unreasonable, then you can get a toxic space.
Also, as I talk about âtoxic fandoms,â understand toxicity is relative. There is, after all, a very real, very unironic Hitler Fandom, and they are probably one of the worst fandoms out there. Being a mean lawyer on the internet is bad, and Iâve no doubt the fandom curators known now as the Powerpuff Girls absolutely wrecked some teenagersâ lives â like, there are definitely people with, I am not joking or being hyperbolic, some PTSD triggers about (say) Tumblr or whatnot, based on the kind of social force these people were leveraging.
And then remember that holding that lever at the high end, right at the top with the most power over it was a company that made TV shows that was trying to make sure you watched their shows.
Also: The tools for doing this are available to all the companies that read the paper.
My advice? Exhort and uplift queer creators. Be positive about it, not negative. Donât make your time about attacking other peopleâs dark fuckprince. Bring what you like to life, and bring that life into the light. Share and love each other, rather than find reasons to be mad at one another for how youâre all playing with toys a corporation wants you to treat with respect and only play properly. And as always, the standard you walk past is the standard you accept â so make sure your fandom circles arenât putting up with some Powerpuff Girls.

Is Anakin a Mary Sue?
youtube
Now it may shock you to learn this but it turns out that Disney Star Wars is kind of a contentious topic. The fandom's been more or less divided between those who like the sequel trilogy and those who like good movies but both groups spend a great deal of time slinging [ __ ] at each other over every form of social media known to man and truly no battleground is more fiercely contested than the protagonist of each trilogy. People who hate the Disney trilogy tend to criticize Rey for being an overpowered, flawless, perfect, invincible and unrelatable character for whom everything just kind of happens with no real struggle or difficulty a Mary Sue if you will.
Meanwhile supporters of the sequel trilogy are quick to leap to her defense usually with one of two potential counter arguments: Â 1. You just hate strong women 2. So what if she's op as [ __ ] Anakin Skywalker from the prequels was a Mary Sue too and you don't criticize him. You just hate strong women. This argument was brought into sharp focus for me the other day when I was perusing twitter in search of calm, logical, rational discussion about the merits of the sequel trilogy and I chanced upon this little gem of a comment. Ah yes that famously perfect protagonist who wins everything, always makes the right decisions, has a selfless and compassionate personality, and is universally loved and respected by everyone. Well random twitter [ __ ] as it turns out, I am ready to have that conversation right now. So saddle up y'all because the drinker's here to round up this [ __ ] and put an end to this argument once and for all. Let us journey deep into the world of the Star Wars prequels and see if we can figure out whether Anakin Skywalker really is a Mary Sue.
Now in order to do this, we have to nail down what exactly a Mary Sue is. Well according to the dictionary definition it's a term used to describe a fictional character, usually female, who is seen as too perfect and almost boring for lack of flaws originally written as an idealized version of an author in fanfiction. Now the finer points of what makes a Mary Sue can vary depending on who you talk to but after consulting multiple sources and drawing upon my own experiences as a writer, there's a few common traits that I think most people would generally agree on:
1.     Mary Sues usually possess skills and abilities that are not consistent with their situation and personal history. They can do stuff they shouldn't realistically be able to and they can do it better than anyone else.
2.     They usually possess flawless idealized personalities that no real person could measure up to they never give in to negative emotions like anger, greed, jealousy, selfishness or arrogance.
3.     They're universally loved respected and embraced by every good character they encounter even when there's no logical reason for this to happen.
4.     They never get seriously challenged, fail at anything or get beaten by anyone, success and victory come easily to them.
5.     They always make good decisions and strive to do what's right in any situation so why is this actually a problem.
Well I think the answer should be obvious, Mary Sues are boring as [ __ ]. If a character has got no flaws or weaknesses and never really gets challenged or tested by anything then what is there to get invested in?
It's the flaws and failings of a character that make them interesting in the first place and their struggle to rise above and overcome these flaws that make them so compelling. If these things are missing from a character, then there's nothing for the audience to latch onto or care about. There's nothing to like or root for. That's the essence of a Mary Sue and that's what we're going to be looking at here. So, with that in mind let's see how Anakin stacks up against this list shall we?
Point number one: Being overpowered and having abilities that he shouldn't. Now this more than anything else is what people tend to latch onto when they criticize Anakin and who can blame them really? On the surface it seems pretty ridiculous to see a nine-year-old boy doing stuff like this autopilot but let's put it into a wider context, shall we? When we first meet Anakin in The Phantom Menace, he's a slave living with his mother on Tatooine. He's spent most of his life salvaging junk and using it to make new stuff that can marginally improve their quality of life. As a result, he's become pretty good with technology. Well that makes sense, I guess. He's even applied these technical skills to pod racing where he's been fairly successful despite suffering at least one major crash that we know about. Again, this kind of makes sense when you consider he's strong with the force which would likely give him heightened perception reactions and understanding of the world around him, you know qualities that are important to high performance racing drivers. Anyway, his racing abilities allow the main characters to win an engine part that they need to repair their ship as well as enough money to buy his freedom. Sensing his importance Qui-Gon Jinn takes him under his wing and begins to teach him about the force. Remember when older mentor characters were allowed to teach the protagonist things? I miss that. He also takes part in a space battle that destroys an enemy mothership at the climax of the movie. Now as goofy as this scene is in its execution, it's not actually inconsistent with Anakinâs abilities and experiences. If you've worked around technology vehicles and ships your entire life and you can pilot a racing pod to a high standard then it stands to reason that you could probably operate other types of spacecraft as well, particularly if you have a droid on board to manage most of the ship's systems for you. However, for the sake of argument let's concede the Anakin in The Phantom Menace is indeed more skilled competent and capable than your average person.
So, what kind of effect would this have on a young man from an impoverished background suddenly thrust into a much larger world of power, politics and opportunity? Well that brings me neatly along to point number two: Mary Sues are supposed to have flawless personalities never giving in to anger, jealousy, resentment, vengeance or ambition. All throughout the second and third movies in the prequel trilogy, Anakin displays an increasingly severe set of personality flaws that begin to undermine his position in the world and his relationship with other characters. He's impetuous and hot-headed, frequently rushing into dangerous situations without waiting for backup or considering the risk to himself particularly when someone he cares about is in danger. Keep that one in mind because it'll be important later. He's ambitious but also impatient, feeling like he's been unfairly held back by other characters, particularly Obi-Wan Kenobi, and this resentment causes a growing rift between the two men that eventually spills out into open conflicts. Rather than taking the longer and harder path to wisdom and understanding, Anakin wants everything right away. He also cares deeply about people close to him and this attachment often manifests in explosive bites of anger and jealousy when he feels that they're being threatened like when his mother gets kidnapped and killed by Tusken Raiders, causing Anakin to go on a violent rampage that escalates into wholesale slaughter. Afterwards even he's shocked by what he did or when he believes that Padme has turned against him by Obi-Wan Kenobi, causing him to lash out violently against both of them. By this point he's been totally consumed by uncontrolled jealousy anger resentment and betrayal. All of the emotions that lead to the dark side of the force. The point here is clear: if you [ __ ] with someone he cares about then mercy and compassion go right out the window.
All of his skills, abilities and potential which seemed so overpowered and unnecessary in the first movie in fact serve a very important purpose for his character development. They've generated a sense of superiority, arrogance and overconfidence, and a reluctance to listen to criticism or advice no matter how well intentioned they might be. These are dangerous flaws in his personality all by themselves but combined with his overwhelming emotional attachment to people he cares about it creates a potent cocktail of reckless ambition and deep-seated insecurity that makes him uniquely vulnerable to manipulation something which will later prove disastrous because while Mary Sues are universally loved respected and trusted by everyone, Anakin certainly isn't in the first movie. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Mace Windu and Yoda are all against training Anakin to become a Jedi despite his obvious potential because they know he's already too old to be inducted. This lack of early discipline in his life would leave a dangerous gap in his personality, making him unpredictable and less able to control his emotions, two factors which are extremely dangerous for Jedi. These misgivings would carry over to the next two movies where Anakin is elevated to the Jedi high council on Palpatineâs orders but the council itself refuses to grant him the rank of master because they feel he hasn't earned it yet. Now a different man would see this as an opportunity to prove himself by working hard and earning their trust eventually winning them over and gaining the recognition he deserves but Anakin takes this as a personal insult from the council which drives a deeper wedge between him and a Jedi order which he believes will never truly respect or accept him. Wow it's almost like Palpatine knew this was going to happen and engineered the whole thing to pull Anakin closer to him portraying himself as the only one who can help Anakin realize his full potential. It's a surprisingly smart piece of characterization that's completely consistent with everything we know about both men. The higher Anakin rises the more it stokes the fire of his ambition and superiority and the more he comes to see anyone who doubts or cautions him as a threat to his success. This arrogance and overconfidence also causes him to test himself against powerful opponents before he's actually ready for them and unlike Mary sues who easily win every battle they have to fight, Anakinâs recklessness causes an escalating series of losses like here where he tries to take on count Dooku all by himself and it ends with Anakin getting his [ __ ] arm sliced off. But his desire for revenge against the man who defeated him ultimately causes a more powerful and better prepared Anakin to execute him in the following movie, again proving his willingness to give into vengeance and anger even against helpless opponents or here in his climactic confrontation with Obi-Wan where his enemy has the advantage but Anakin presses the attack anyway and well I think we know how that turns out. Just as a side note I love how this carries over to Return of the Jedi. See Lukeâs taking the high ground here just like Obi-Wan did.
What we have here is a clear pattern of behavior from a man whose ambitions consistently outstrip his abilities. Rather than demonstrating patience and restraint and taking the slower and harder path to lasting wisdom and fulfillment, Anakinâs inherent character flaws cause him to push himself beyond breaking point with increasingly disastrous consequences which brings me neatly along to the final points: whereas Mary Sues consistently make good righteous decisions and always strive to do the correct thing, Anakin on the other hand demonstrates a consistent pattern of mistakes and misjudgments that ultimately cost him everything. As I've already shown you the flaws in his personality are exacerbated by his powers and abilities making him easy prey for a ruthlessly ambitious man that knows exactly how to flatter his ambitions and prey on his weaknesses this eventually causes him to commit terrible crimes like murdering an entire tribe including unarmed civilians murdering children, executing a helpless opponent, helping to kill a jedi master, trying to murder his own wife, trying to kill his mentor and best friend, joining forces with an evil dictator to overthrow the republic, delivering this sceneâŚ
What Iâm trying to say with all this is that Anakin Skywalker is the very furthest thing from a Mary Sue that you can get. Trying to label him as a Mary Sue for no other reason than because he's good at lots of stuff demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of what a Mary Sue is and also of who Anakin is. The reality is that he's a powerful but deeply flawed man whose unique combination of circumstances and abilities have created a dangerous personality that's vulnerable to manipulation and corruption his greatest strengths ultimately proved to be his most terrible weaknesses with consequences that echo across the entire galaxy. Now I have my own thoughts on the prequel trilogy as a whole and Iâd be lying if I said they were great movies but fundamentally I think the story they tell is actually pretty [ __ ] good and Iâm just gonna say it: Anakinâs rise to power and fall to the dark side is a damn good piece of character work that Disney would have done well to pay more attention to. Anyway, that's all Iâve got for today. Go away now.
I would argue the prequels are great movies but he makes some very good points. I have seen so many Disney fans claim Anakin is a Mary Sue, when heâs anything but a Mary Sue.Â

Missed Signals Chapter 2
SUMMARY: Reki has a tendency to do things while being unaware. He doesn't notice his leg shaking or how much he fidgets with his headband or even how much he picks at his skin. He only notices when someone tells him to knock it off or when he focuses so intently his brain thinks of nothing else.
WARNINGS: Nothing too grand, descriptions of ADHD symptoms,
NOTES: I am trying to cope with what I am thinking is undiagnosed ADHD by projecting onto my favorite characters. I mean no harm and no offense.

Reki wasn't bored per se. He was interested in the material being taught, but he couldn't sit still enough to focus. He seemed to be having this problem a lot more now that he had spoken to Cherry and Joe slightly against he will. He was trying to be still as possible knowing that if he began to shift then the class would be disrupted but he could feel it building under his skin, an itch he needed to scratch. He was glad at the moment Langa reached over, swapping his clicking pen for a soft pencil. He wanted to apologize to the nearby students but was too busy twirling the pencil around his fingers like a drumstick, he was able to tune back into the teacher but unable to write his notes, but the itch was at least soothed under his skin.
He wasn't too worried about his notes anymore though. Langa had asked Cherry for some lessons on Japanese to help better his literacy quicker. He used his skills to take better notes for Reki to copy on the rougher days like today. When it came time for a break, Langa and Reki stayed in the classroom, leaning against the nearby open window.
"How did you know?" Reki asked Langa. "How do you always know when I need to fidget?"
"I don't always. Just like you are starting to pay attention and are learning your cues, so am I. I notice that you tend to freeze and then you gets more and more tense as it gets worse. I know that you as a person, think you are a burden, even though you are not, so you don't like to do things that attract attention, like clicking your pen. So I gave you my pencil." Langa explained. "Also, if I look at the right moment, you look for ways to escape. Your eyes flick from door to door like you are caged in, so you are ready to leave if needed. Not only at school but when we are in busy places too, like you need to always be ready to move at the drop of a hat." Langa said.
"Hm. I didn't know that. Thank you for helping me. I don't know what I would do without you." Reki pulled Langa into a tight hug.
Langa hugged him back, squeezing tightly, knowing that Reki liked firm physical contact. "There is no need to thank me. I am glad to help you as much as I can."
Break ended, an das they returned to their seats, Reki's restlessness seemed to ease. Reki took his notes for his last class with minimal distractions and drawings. They finished their school day, standing by the entrance gate deciding on what to do.
"I want to skate but I know I need to do the homework, we got assignments in most of our classes. Do you think we could go to Joe's?" Langa asked. "The noise sometimes helps you focus."
Yeah. Can we skate for like an hour first? I want to make sure I can focus, we can take the long way there, right?" Reki asked. Langa playfully hesitated and after Reki's third 'please' agreed to the plan.
When they finally get to Joe's restaurant, their normal spots at the bar are open. They duck in and settle next to Cherry while pulling out their books. Everyone seemed to understand by unspoken rule that those seats were for them and rarely were there people in them. In a second there was a pot of tea and a pitcher of water sat in front of them.
"Hello boys. How was school today?" Cherry finally noticed them getting their school books out of their bags.
"Good. Today I was able to take notes for a few of my classes really well. I did have an issue before last break but Langa helped." Reki said while snatching Langa's notebook to copy for the class he didn't take notes in.
"He started getting tense and seemed...flightly. So I took his pen and made him use a pencil. He twirled it around for the whole period, but was able to follow along really well. It seemed to help ease his restlessness." Langa explained. Reki was tuning out their conversation, biting his thumb while looking between the two notebooks and the textbook.
"He did the same motions? Consistently? Interesting." Cherry made a mental note to look into that along with the research he was doing on neurodevelopment disorders. "Why are you guys here? Not that we don't love to see you everyday of the week." Cherry tried to keep the sarcasm to a minimum, he knew Reki was sensitive.
"Reki suggested it. Sometimes the constant noise is just right for him to get into the zone. He can focus because it isn't too loud or too quiet I guess. He is trying different environments to see if he can pinpoint what works and what doesn't. After finally talking about it, he seemed to realize that this is a problem that won't go away on its own. Reki is smart, reckless but smart." Langa said. He moved to Cherry's other side as to not talk over Reki for the moment.
"The noise seems counterintuitive. I don't get it." Cherry said. His eyebrows were furrowed in thought.
"I told you before, it is different for everyone. But The noise here or other places like this work for us sometimes, cause it is rhythmic. There is a pattern-people come, people eat, people leave. Our brains like patterns, it is even better when we can think about them in the back of our minds. We are fully invested without taking our focus off the main things. Doesn't always work though." Joe cut into the conversation.
The three skaters looked over at Reki who was diligently copying notes while biting his fingers of his left hand. He was the most focused they had seen him in a while outside of skating. The restaurant was working in his favor. However he was chewing rather violently on his nails, Langa narrowed his eyes at the red and raw tips of his fingers. They looked sore and painful, but Langa couldn't pin down when he saw Reki chewing at his nails. From what Langa could see it was a constant habit.
"He is chewing his fingers too. You can see the redness and bits of blood around his nails." Langa commented to Cherry. They both sat and watched as Reki worked hard.
Reki was unaware of his surroundings, he paid no attention to Cherry and Langa avidly staring at him, he let the background noise of Joe's restaurant wash over him lulling him into a state of focus. He tried not to think to much, just enjoying the environment and the positive results on his mental state. Reki was so focus he didn't realize he was chewing on his fingers at all again. It was a habit his mother crowed about him needing to break but nothing seemed to do the trick. Reki finally pulled away from his fingers and studies when he tasted blood and Langa laced his fingers with his.
"Hey, maybe you should take a break. You've been working for a while and I think we need to talk about your nail biting." Langa said.
"I wouldn't mind a break. I am not really hungry though, I think I will just have some tea for now." Reki answered absentmindedly. He was finishing up the section he had been working on. Cherry and Langa shared a look.
"Reki, when was the last time you ate? You really should have something. It is getting late." Cherry tried to push the red-head. Reki paid him no mind, already swallowed into his studies again. He was adamant he was going to finish his assignments, all of them that he could. Reki pulled off his headband and began scratching lightly at his scalp, running his fingers through his hair, tugging lightly when he was thinking.
"Reki, did you eat lunch today?" Langa asked. Reki blinked and refocused on Langa. Langa could tell that the recent conversation had gone in one ear and out the other. "Reki, look at me. Focus on me for just a moment." Langa waited until he saw Reki's distant gaze blink back into awareness. "Reki, did you eat today at lunch?"
"Did I eat today at lunch?" Reki parroted. Langa nodded. "Yeah, I had chicken curry and a Caprese salad." Reki answered firmly.
"Reki that was your lunch yesterday. I remember because I ate all the mozzarella bites and you yelled at me cause that was your favorite part. What did you eat today? I had to go speak to Hirikawa-Sensei at lunch today. I told you to go to the roof and eat, I would catch up." Langa said. Reki frowned in thought.
"I remember that, then I got distracted by a text Miya sent me and then it reminded me of something I wanted to look at for a gift for him...."Reki trailed off. "I don't think I ate today at all. I missed breakfast cause I over slept." Reki nodded once, pleased to be able to give a truthful answer. When no one responded his shrugged and went back to work.
"Oh, hell no. I know that when you get in the groove, you tend to stay there for too long but Reki you missed three meals today and now all you want is tea?" Cherry was slightly heated.
"Yeah, it makes the most sense. I need the caffeine to help me focus and it is an appetite suppressant and the water will keep me full and the tea will be good on my stomach. If I eat now, then I will be nauseous later. Days like this happen enough that I know what I am doing." Reki said. He only shrugged in answer to Langa and Cherry's incredulous looks. "Please leave it alone, sometimes, I don't like to eat. It can be tiring, a lot leads up to having a meal and sometimes that is too much. I take what I can get when I can get it. Now, let me finish my science homework." Reki waved off their concern just as Joe changed out the tea pots, with a smile.
"You doing okay over here kid? Need anything?" Joe asked but eyed all three of them. they all shook their heads, Reki gleefully fixing a large mug of tea how he liked it and drinking it quickly before making another one and sipping it. He kept the spoon in the mug, sliding it through the tea first up then down then left then right making a small ting each time. The motion and the noise seemed to soothe nerves that Cherry and Langa both missed up to that point. As Reki faded back into his studies, abandoning the tea but not the stirring motion, Cherry and Langa began having a whispered conversation.
"I think we should have a tutoring session, and I think Joe should lead this one. We need to figure out how and what we can do to help Reki. We seem to just stress him out when we get caught up in out neurotypical behaviors. I was thinking Saturday? I can ask Miya to distract him with skating for a while, or maybe help him make a new board? I think Reki has a commission from someone who comes to Dope Sketch." Langa requested. His concern was clearly on his face, eyebrows drawn together and a lip tucked between his teeth.
"I agree. I can order some books and resources online so we can have reputable sources. and Miya would love to help, he has been nagging me about it since the discussion at the skate park." Cherry responded.
Langa waved down Joe frantically, almost hitting Reki in the head. Joe came over, an eyebrow raised in question. "What can I do for you?" He asked a little too loud. Langa quickly hushed him, shooting a fruitive glance at a still studying Reki.
"Will you come and help us research ways to help Reki? I know we talked about it before but now I really want to look into it. This is affecting his everyday life, his is hurting himself unintentionally and even skipping meals. I don't want to push too had but I think we need to look at ways of helping him cope with what is going on." Langa asked.
"Of course. I don't know how much I can help, I have to say that my medication helped a lot and because of that my symptoms aren't as noticeable most of the time even if I miss a dose. I have spent many years forming the habits that help me get through the day, skating and the intensity of the kitchen help with that too. Where do you want to meet at?" Joe asked.
"We can meet at my studio, it is spacious enough and then we can keep our work there. I really think this will be good for him and for us." Cherry said. "I had no idea that some of the quirks you and Reki exhibit were signs of something else. It must be tiring to try to keep up with people who don't understand or even yourselves." Cherry continued.
That moment Reki raised his head, stretching his arms over his head and groaning deeply. Langa looked at the long lines of his torso-staring until a elbow jabbed his ribs. "I think that is all I can do today. I got a lot done though, caught up in a lot of class work. I may be a more permanent resident to this stool Joe. I think it is about time we head out. My mom probably texted me a dozen times wondering where I am. I should let Nanako know where you are too." Reki pulled out his phone to text both their moms, not seeing the looks Joe and Cherry sent Langa's way.
"I forget. I can't help it. And my mom loves Reki, she'll say yes to anything he asks her." Langa tried to explain himself, Joe laughed and Cherry shook his head. Reki finished texting and packed up hi things, a light aura of pride coming from him.
"I did it. I can turn in this week's assignments. I got all my work done. Thank you Langa, Cherry, Joe, for all you help. We need to get going." Reki hopped down from the stool and wobbled slightly. He swallowed once, twice. He narrowed his eyes and tilted his head, obviously considering something. "Is this hunger? Am I thirsty? Eh, maybe just a good night's rest will do me in." Reki thought aloud. He shrugged his bag on, waiting patiently for Langa to get down, unaware of what he just said. He curled his fingers inward rubbing his nails against each other making a light ticking noise, rocking heel to toe.
Langa looked towards Joe's ceiling, seeming to pray for patience. 'This idiot, my god. He would be dead without someone to take care of him. How has he survived this long?'"I'm coming Reki. We can go home. Am I staying over tonight?" Langa asked.
"If you want yeah. You should call your mom though. She probably would like to hear from her only son." Reki teased as Langa gathered his things.
"Hey, Reki! Here, this is for you. Drink it on your way home, okay?" Joe handed Reki a large to-go cup. "Kaoru likes smoothies at the end of the night sometimes so I made a little extra for you. I know that sometimes food is just too much but you need something in you. Don't worry it tastes fine and only has a little bit of the healthy stuff in it. Promise." Reki took the cup beaming at Joe.
"Thank you. I know that I don't make sense, and some of the things I do make me a burden but I can't help it. So thank you for understanding." Reki bowed and hurried out the door, embarrassed. Langa hurried after him, calling a farewell over his shoulder.
Joe watched them skate away, a small smile on his face. 'He'll be fine. He has a whole family looking out for him.' Joe went back to Kaoru who was impatiently waiting for his nightly glass of wine, no smoothie in sight.

Submission Time #14
Submission about secondary
Hi, Paint! I was wondering if you ever had time, could you please help and give your thoughts on my secondary?
I guess my quiz results really depend on my mood, on a bad mood I can get a bird or snake, on good mood â a badger secondary. I rarely get a lion secondary, and Iâm strangely calm about it, it would really be funny if Iâd be a double burned lion but evidence shows thatâs probably not the case. Also, Iâm sorry for all the mistakes I will be making and the ones I didnât notice, and this is so long, Iâm sorry. I will shamefully copy the other submission style, so if itâs wrong pls just ignore me.
Not a problem! I'm the one who suggested that people use it :)
When you succeed, how influential in that success were the people around you? â I donât know for sure, and I might be ungrateful here, but I think Iâm still the one making the calls and thinking about stuff. Sure, I ask for help and opinion, support, but Iâm still the one who has to do the thing. But itâs true I should probably pay more respect and gratitude to the ones who are there for me.
This suggests you aren't a Courtier Badger by nature. Doesn't yet rule out Bookkeeper style Badger, though.
Do people consider you charismatic? / Do people consider you trustworthy? â Eh, maybe. I love that there is a possibility to choose such an answer. Charisma for me is a tool, a mask, while for being trustworthy, some people do, some would like that Iâd be more of it, I think peopleâs opinions on what that is can really differ. Iâve always read that people canât trust a Gemini, that they have long and loose tongues, one day I decided that will never be me, no matter what others say.
Basically everything I know about astrology is either Homestuck or LavenderTowne's "drawing the signs as cute characters" videos on YouTube đ but as a Cancer who does not fit most of the Cancer description, rest assured I will not judge you for this :p
Describing charisma as a "tool" suggests it might be part of a Snake model or a skill you've picked up through Bird.
Do people consider you flexible? â No. Things have to be the way I want them to be. Stupid, problematic, not realistic, I know.
Haha, maybe Bird xD or maybe Bookkeeper Badger. This is a Built secondary answer.
Do you like going into situations with a plan? â Hereâs the thing about my plans â they are small, not really fleshed out. I do like to be prepared, but I do not seek out to be, because usually no matter how much I prepare I feel that it still is heavily not enough so itâs almost the same as just diving in and doing whatever.
Rapid fire Bird with Snake model? Or perhaps the other way around. It sounds from your last answer like this isn't the kind of situation you feel most comfortable in.
Not all Birds like to plan. I for one am a "hoard all the skills and resources" style Bird, and don't tend to plan very much for individual situations, especially ones that change quickly. If I were to prepare for something like that, it would be gathering knowledge about the situation in advance, rather than deciding how to respond based on probably-inaccurate expectations.
Still, this makes it sound a bit like you don't trust Bird, or at least not the planning form of Bird.
When you spot a metaphorical obstacle in your path, what do you do? â This one is the one that always makes me think Am I a snake secondary? If thereâs a problem that maybe could arise, why would you not find another way around? Face it? Understand it? PfffffâŚ. Itâs so much stress and trouble, just go around it if you can. If not, well, yeah, Iâd just face it head on I guess.
How do you feel about shortcuts? â Well, if it means landscapes shortcuts â love them. In life and situations â no. It feels unstable, unsafe. If there is a way you need to do things, I will do it the right way. I might cut ways in small and not that important ways, but no more.
See, these two questions have me really considering Bookkeeper Badger for you, and I'm starting to understand why you're confusing the quiz so much.
I think the quiz considers these to be kind of opposite answers--just getting around a problem rather than solving it might be considered a shortcut. This is the kind of issue you get with abstract questions, but the problem is that concrete questions are rarely ambiguous enough to serve the right purpose. This is also why I suggest sending me quiz questions--because you're allowed to elaborate, and I interpret your answers differently from the computer. :)
Do you like to gather all possible information before making a decision? â Yeah, I do gather information, research, but at a certain point you just have to dive in, as another person said.
You might have a Bird model? Or you might even be burned Bird, because you don't not use Bird but you don't seem to trust it much or see it as worth relying on.
Is knowing things or knowing people more useful when solving problems? â I really donât know how to answer this one. Intuitively, without thinking, Iâd say things, but there are so much BUTs. Maybe itâs because I always had problems in social situations, that Iâm very reserved, cold and shy so I donât build relationships that could be called like that? Obviously itâs more useful to have someone help you and teach you how to do stuff, like legal documents, mechanics, computer engineering or other stuff that is hard to understand and boring to me or things that I donât have resources to do. When I go to people asking for help, I ask because I know they can help, I donât just go to my community, to my people asking IF anyone could help. I donât know, this question for me is really painful. A simple answer would be people. Like if Iâd think about building a house or a van to live in, it would be more useful to know someone who knows how to do these things then knowing how to do it myself. Iâd miss so much details by myself. But then why I still want to press Things?
Huh, that's interesting. Especially interesting that you describe this as painful--like, it really matters to you.
You might be a burned Bird with a Badger model that's almost totally Bookkeeper style--which, if that Badger is a model, it would make perfect sense why it relies so heavily on one aspect of that secondary.
You don't seem very Snakey to me so far. The "get around the obstacle" thing is the quiz's Snake answer, and charisma (even as a tool) isn't Snake exclusive either.
When your plan fails, what do you do? â This question always makes me smile, because my answer is 1. I donât plan, BUT if I did have a plan that failed, if it was that important; 2. I panic; 3. Then, I calm down and improvise like my life depends on it.
Huh. I don't know if this points to anything in particular...
Do you collect things? â No? I collect books that I actually liked, even if I will never read them again, I want to have them around. I have a couple of diplomas, but itâs just because I couldnât decide or couldnât see myself in that career. I maybe collect plants. Other than maybe these things, I donât really feel like I collect anything.
And here again the bird secondary shows up. I really donât see it with my inability to plan and prepare for things. I feel unprepared for everything and too bored and not intrigued enough to prepare.
Oddly enough, this really makes me wonder if you're a Bird, specifically burned. This isn't just a neutral "yeah I don't really use it," it sounds actually sad and negative: you don't feel able to use it, you feel bored and unprepared. It sounds like you've tried, like you wish you could use it... but it's just not there for you.
Do you study or plan excessively for things that arenât useful?... â Plan â no. Study â yes. Iâm one of those people who has started a new hobby in the pandemic, which involves studying I guess. And it absolutely has nothing to do with being useful, I just love it, so I guess yes. To me it has a purpose, I guess.
You do seem to study a lot. You read books, which not everyone does. You have multiple diplomas. But they're a background element in your life, you were saying.
Do you think of relationships as something you invest in?... â Yes. I think we all invest in relationships, and in the smallest we at least expect that person to be with us, to support us if we had a hard day or a hard time. I do not invest in relationships with people because they can do stuff for me, do that or let me in there or here, or level me up in my career. That would be wrong, itâs not how you supposed to do it. But Iâd still say that I think about this, about investing time and effort.
Badgers don't seem to like the idea of networking as a means of getting stuff, on the whole, even though that's how they get described because that's what people might see from the outside. (It's more like a Snake or sometimes a Bird to be okay with that description of their methods.)
I still think you have a lot of Bookkeeper to your secondary. I'm not sure if it's a strong model, or if your Bird is the model and it's just really burned anyway.
Do you act different in different groups? Does it bother you, if you do? â Yes, I think I probably do. It bothers me that I am thrown into a situation like that with people like that more than the fact that I act different. So it does bother me, but not in the way that the quiz authors intended that it should mean.
So, you only do this with certain groups where you don't feel safe. Again, I'm not getting a whole lot of Snake here?
So long as you know who you are, do you care what other people think? â Yes, absolutely. First, I donât know who I am, sometimes, in certain situations, I can look inside myself and feel empty. It means Iâm more ready to react to a situation than to show who I am, I guess. Secondly, what other people think about you can affect you, emotionally, or worst, actually in your physical life.
Okay. I think I might be getting this, finally.
Your secondary seems to be burned. It may be one of those cases where it's just burned, and you haven't recovered it or started up a strong model--this is part of the official SHC descriptions, that you can just burn your secondary and not have strong inclinations about it any more, you just do whatever works but none of it is very satisfying.
You get examples of this with characters pretty frequently, but with people it seems less common--you see a lot of models instead. I actually forgot that this was part of the SHC system until just now, but you can find a kind of not-super-comfortable stability in just... not having a secondary. This might be why you're getting hints of other secondaries, but it's hard to pin down anything strong enough for you to feel like you can claim it as yours.
I'd hazard that your secondary might have been Bird or Bookkeeper Badger before, and you have hints of both of those now. I lean towards Bird being your actual secondary and just extremely burned, and Bookkeeper being a bit of a model or performance you're kind of using but feel conflicted about.
In a pinch, you'll improvise or whatever, just anything that works, but it's not something you're very comfortable with. That's not the same thing as Snake, but I think it's why you're getting Snake results from the quiz.
Perhaps the reason you can't figure out your secondary, in short, is that it isn't there.
Thank you, and yes, please ignore me if it's annoying. Have a good time and be safe!Â
Oof, I'm sorry that this isn't a cheerier result to hand you ^^; hugs! Hope you can find something that works for you soon.

A Masterpost: ALL MY OLD die ärzte (aka Bela&Farin) COMICS (from 2010-2011)
Iâve lately been talking about my art, especially comics, here a lot but I have never posted my OLD old dä comics here! Thatâs about to change now. The old ones happened in 2010-2011 when I was 19-20 years old, so they are a bit cringy now :D The scans are my old ones so donât mind about cat hair or something like that in some of the scans. And I know: my hand writing hasnât really changed in the past 10-15 years at all :DD
And a slash warning (do I really need that with this fandom tho..?) because I used to draw just very fluffy Bela/Farin comics and they barely have any good plots even. Thereâs just 4 overall in this post and they all are quite short. But at least for me itâs fun to see how far I have come and how Iâve gotten better at drawing!
Anyway, without further ado, this is where it all started:
Bela&Farin - âDu willst mich kĂźssenâ
Simply the idea came from the fact I noticed that on the âDu willst mich kĂźssenâ single thereâs only one additional song: âDie Antwort bist duâ, and that one out of all the potential other songs from the studio album. (Now Iâm wondering if I should try to redraw this some day to see my progress? :DD)
The rest under the cut because they get very cringy but if you want to read B/F fluff comics and facepalm at my idiotic humour, go ahead and click the read more link.
Bela&Farin - Bela will ein Baby
(eng. Bela wants to have a baby)
This one was the first I did in German and I traumatized myself. I had just started learning German and totally failed everything and an (old) online friend, native German, wrote something that indicated laughing and I felt so insecure about my German after that that even today I have a fear of saying/writing even simple German words in front of native Germans. She anyway âbeta readâ the plot and corrected every faulty phrase (aka every phrase) and this is what she suggested that Iâd write, and thatâs what I did.
The plot shortly: Bela just wants to have a baby but he wants it with Farin obviously, so Farin says theyâre both men and canât reproduce together but Bela found a solution: he found them a surrogate mother. Problem solved.
***
Bela&Farin - âBeer Bellyâ
Prepare yourself for a cringe overload :)) Iâm so sorry that you have to suffer through this.
With this the idea came from the live videos I was watching back then - lots of live videos from 2007-2009 and I noticed that Bela just kept growing and losing his belly all the time. (OMG HELP Iâm crying because âSQUEAK SQUEAKâ XDDDDDD)
Also the ending is... I donât know what is it. I guess I just wanted Rod ot make an appearance and didnât come up anything better than this ::D My peak of humour is right there btw: anything that happens at the background. That shit just never gets old for me. So I find that still funny in this comic but I have no clue how a bass can be pregnant.
Also hey, I have started drawing shadows :DD
And yes, Bela actually did have a cow t-shirt like that in some of the videos and I just had to draw it! And btw, the reason for the fluff is probably because the concerts where those videos were from? It was extremely slashy, Bela and Farin barely could keep their hands off of each other so you really canât blame me for all this. The ship just sails itself.
***
Bela&Farin - âZuckerâ
(eng. âSugarâ - this one was again in German because it wouldnât work in English. This time I think I did all the language stuff myself but I canât remember for sure so maybe I got help, maybe I didnât... This is the last one of these old comics and my personal favorite. You can see that my style somehow went through some major changes but I donât know what even happened there. I canât remember.)
I canât get over Farinâs hair in the last panel, I drew it so perfectly and I still donât know how to recreate that lol. And now Iâm losing it at that tiny âXDâ in the grin panel because I found it so stupid looking - the first time I had even drawn a grin for him lmao. Also ignore Farinâs arm that has suddenly lost all its color. (Aka: someone forgot to color it.)
THE IDEA for this comic is simply in the name of brown sugar. At least in Finnish that is called as âfariinisokeriâ, which always amuses me still after 12 years because I am a bit simple sometimes, and I figured that it can also be called âFarinzuckerâ in German so of course I needed to make a Bela/Farin comic about it.
The dialog for those who donât speak German (too well) yet - Bela just goes to Farin to ask for âFarin sugarâ and Farin first is like ânopeâ but then âjkâ and they lived happily ever after. Or something.
***
BONUS:
Something I drew with a ballpoint pen once when I was visiting my aunt and cousin and was bored and doodled this. I like drawing repeated patterns like brick walls or apparently also flowers.
And I have no idea where did I draw this - maybe it was something to do with one course through the employment agency as I tend to doodle when in any kind of class. I feel like I had been watching âDie band, die sie Pferd nanntenâ prior to this, based on Belaâs looks.
And it was back in 2010, I didnât have a smart phone yet so no internet to use for reference photos :D
***
So, back to the comics - I only made these 4 back then but before this I did draw other stuff and comics too. I drew several of them as horses when I still didnât know how to draw humans, and I also have one of them as rats too. The rat one might work as a redrawn human comic, tho... Anyway, at some point I got annoyed because I didnât like drawing them as horses or rats and wanted to invent a âhuman styleâ so then one night, this happened:
The texts are mainly just me chanting how Iâm dying from laughter etc. That is actually what I do when I am very insecure of what I do and then I just start openly laughing at everything and myself, that way things donât feel as bad failures than what they actually are :D (And yeah I know the article is wrong at some point, letâs just say I hadnât memorized all the article stuff from German yet :D I donât know if I had even started learning German yet at that point.)
But yeah, then I did find the style and these are the next sketches from my sketchbook:
The bottom left says âfacial experessionsâ - and oh my god I was so damn cringe whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy---
but anyway, those were what I ended up with eventually and the rest is history. I think Iâm still gonna make one post with stuff I drew in 2018 and that I havenât posted here yet as thereâs still a few of those, too.

BreadTube so White Because the Viewers are White and Other Hot Takes
I have a playlist of long-form video essays that I created for work about a month ago. I often find that a person talking in my vicinity but not to me helps me stay focused, and video essays because theyâre academic are often better for that because the topic is vague enough and the tone even enough to ride the line between âboring enough to fade into the backgroundâ and âfun enough to not be annoying.â And they have the added benefit of being very long for YouTube standards, so the transition isnât distracting.Â
There is a fine line for the criteria to make this playlist, which vaguely nebulates to âsomething I enjoyed enough to watch multiple times, by a creator Iâve followed long enough to have formed a parasocial relationship with, whose content is both vague but relatable in a way that I wonât feel the need to form a separate opinion or contribute to the dialog in some way.â And ultimately thatâs very personal and very specific! Rowan Ellisâ âdefinitive proof that captain marvel is gay (spoilers)â got cut from the list for being too chaotic, but Hbomberguyâs âFlat Earth: A Measured Responseâ got to stay despite also being quite chaotic. And even though I have a lot of Lindsay Ellis on the playlist, I often wind up having to skip them because, since theyâre essays about a specific movie, they wind up being too niche and draw my focus away from work. And yet I also have Folding Ideasâ âA Lukewarm Defence of Fifty Shadesâ with no issue.
The best videos tend to be by Contrapoints or PhilosophyTube, because both creators speak in soothing tones with vague but relatable content. Itâs practically ASMR for academics.Â
But thereâs something interesting about all the names so far. Theyâre almost entirely people branded as BreadTube. And theyâre entirely⌠all white.Â
Naturally I am fixing this bias. There are creators I listen to on repeat who are not white. I listen to CJ the Xâs videos three times in a row when they release and often go back to the archives again when Melina Pendulum aka Princess Weekes uploads a new video. But they didnât make the first pass when I was putting this playlist together. Why?
For a lot of the artists I didnât include, there were perfectly valid reasons. CJ the X is too chaotic, Princess Weekes is too niche. Khadija Mboweâs videos are both vague enough and relatable enough that they should have been included, but I found out about them relatively recently, and their voice doesnât fade into the background for me the way a more familiar voice would. T1J meanwhile I have the opposite problem with. He speaks so calmly and gently that his voice doesnât give me enough focus to stay alert at work, and I get distracted. I had perfectly valid reasons for not reaching for those creators first in every instance.Â
But⌠these issues were present in white creators too. I just made allowances. Lindsay Ellis is as niche as Princess Weekes, but rather than not include Lindsay, I just skip it if itâs not helpful. Hbomberguy is⌠Well, not *as* chaotic as CJ because no one is as chaotic as CJ. But if Harryâs work is too chaotic for me that day I just skip it. Why include Folding Ideasâ Fifty Shades videos, but not Kat Blaqueâs?Â
I mean, I know why. Itâs because I am a white person, so I subconsciously relate better to other white people, and have to consciously think about that in order to avoid doing it. I know all that. But I still wanted to bring it up, partly to just advertise some cool, under-subscribed Black and POC creators, many of whom are trans or non-binary. In fact I think T1J is the only video essayist I follow who isnât in some way queer. But I also think itâs important to talk about this issue not just from the creator standpoint, but also from the viewer standpoint. Yes, I have to go out of my way to seek out creators of color lest the default BreadTube white aesthetic overtake my YouTube recommends. So I do that. And you should too.Â
BreadTube is white because the people who decided what BreadTube is are the viewers, and the viewers who decided that were predominantly white people viewing content by people who looked like them. And although this is partly because if Contrapoints name drops Lindsay Ellis, thatâs a way to discover a new creator and BreadTube does tend to reference each other, this isnât entirely a failure on the creatorâs part.Â
I think for me the person with whom this is the most obvious is Princess. Princess and Lindsay work together on the PBS series âItâs Lit.â They have similar talking styles, similar production quality, similar professional experience, and talk about similar subjects. I went to a book talk for Lindsayâs book, and Princess was there (if I recall correctly as a moderator). They advertise for each other. And yet, Lindsay Ellis has 1.1 million subscribers, and Princess has 120,000.Â
I think itâs safe to say that most of the people subscribed to Princess are probably also subscribed to Lindsay, but that clearly doesnât go both ways. Most of the people subscribed to Lindsay are NOT subscribed to Princess, and that was, at the very least, a subconscious choice, because Lindsay has advocated for Princess specifically by name on more than one occasion. I can hazard a guess that most people would have a reason why Princessâ content didnât catch them the same way, and Iâm sure it would even be a reason that made sense. But the reason on its own is not enough to hold something as being removed from any underlying racial biases. If I am saying âwell this personâs content is too niche for this playlistâ but making that allowance for someone else, then thereâs still an underlying bias at play, even if only on a subconscious level.Â
This is something that comes up all the time when liberal-minded white people are grappling with racial justice. I see it happen over and over again in hiring committees that a diverse pool gets slimmed down to the most qualified white men in the pool. And you could absolutely justify that by saying that the most qualified candidates rose to the top. But when one of those qualifiers is âa good fitâ and other ambiguous language, people are encouraged to go with their gut feeling about a person, which often when no other information is present defaults to âpeople who look like me.â
I have heard activists claim that anti-racism at times goes too far, because it creates such a fixation on race that it feels like thatâs the only thing youâre talking about. It makes more of a big deal about race than was there previously, and surely thatâs a bad thing.Â
But the thing is⌠had I not been paying attention, and in the habit of questioning my own behavior, my playlist would have continued to be devoid of any people of color, purely on vibes alone. Race wasnât a big deal because all of that was going on subconsciously. By thinking about it and talking about it, all weâre doing is bringing an existing problem into light.Â
Anyway none of this is new news and Iâm ultimately procrastinating on a Monday like always so if you want more leftist long-form video essays in your feed by trans and non-binary people of color go subscribe to Xiran Jay Zhao or Khadija Mbowe or Kat Blaque or CJ the X.

Charles Schulz vs Andrew Dobson: What a Blockhead!
There are certain things about Dobsonâs behavior and particularly his approach at being a nerd and presenting himself as someone who enjoys the art of storytelling that I have issues with. Issues I want to tackle on in more detail within later entries quite a bit.
One such tendency is, that he mocks directly or indirectly the work and accomplishments of others.
See, if Dobson doesnât like you as a content creator because he does not like something you work on, he will try to show it. He will make stupid assumptions of you (like how he accused Kojima of being a sexist creep because of Quiet and how he deals with âmale gazeâ in MGS compared to Death Stranding), half heartedly mock you (look at anything he makes about Ethan Van Sciver) or he will call a piece of work boring and dull based on a minor element instead of overarching problems (calling Batman the character a white supremacist based on the dumb work of only one author).
By doing that he also tries indirectly to insinuate that he is better in some manner, though most of the time it really just shows his own ego and that his pet peeves are rather petty compared to the overall quality of the work he criticizes as well as its flaws.
One such sight of ego boosting while mocking the work of his better is in my opinion to be found in this comic he uploaded sometimes around 2016/17 randomly online.
This comic in my opinion is both laughable and insulting. Why? I will explain soon.
First however I want to clarify that I get that this comic is supposed to be a joke mostly. The old âWhat others expect, what I expectâ thing, where the punchline is supposed to be the discrepancy between the two fractions and what they expect, mostly by making one of the expectations come off as worse than the other. However, I find the punchline to be Charlie Brown (and as such what Dobson seems to see as something he does not want to be favorable compared too) quite insulting. Why, as I said, will be elaborated on sooner.
First, let me just get on the part I find laughable: The fact that Dobson in his own head seems to believe he can be even remotely compared to people like Paul Dinni, Bruce Timm, Greg Weismann, Justin Roiland, Miyazaki, Shigeru Miyamoto and all the other character creators and animators whose creations we see in the first panel.
Dobson, donât make me laugh. Putting aside the fact that those people are animators more than cartoonists, what makes you even believe in your wildest dreams you are on the same level as them? The fact you too are an animator, seeing how you graduated from an art school with a degree in that field? I have seen your contributions to the field and honestly, I would expect a bit more. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0tdWNCrIxo

 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PyonOqClf8
I give you credit, you can animate. Which is more than I can say for myself when it comes to the arts. But when you look what other freelance animators can do online, some of them younger than you and NOT with a degree in animationâŚ

Viviepopâs demo reels alone are just gorgeous to look at and more fluid than what I have seen of you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFlha-KOKCc
And it is not just the technical quality, Dobson. It is also just the overall âoriginalityâ of your work. Cause this is the thing with those animators hinted on in the first pic and even many, many freelancers/fanartists as well as webcomic creators online: They have a spark of originality in presentation and storytelling that you lack. I will one day go more into detail for that, but here is the most brutal thing I can say at the moment: I know shitty porn fanfictions, that have more plot development and character growth than all of Alex ze Pirate.
Your characters and stories tend to be derivative and you barely take any risks in telling a story. Neither in your fanbased work (like the Miraculous comics) nor your original content (mostly because you take comfort in four panel strips anyway) Â and when you have an idea for something on which the basis idea actually sounds good, you screw it up by a lackluster execution. One example I want to give for that, would be this fanart of yours in regard to Steven Universe. Â
(I apologize for not getting one in better quality) This pic was something Dobson created around 2015 for Steven Universe. The picture is supposed to show Lapis, trapped under the ocean following the events of the season 1 finale of the show. A very emotional situation if you are aware of why Lapis sacrificed herself and was âbannedâ to the ocean floor. Short explanation: Fused with Jasper and then took primarily control of the fused being they became (Malachite) by using her water powers to bond it with heavy water chains on the ocean floor, so that Jasper would not hurt Steven anymore.
How much of that was even an emotional strain on her and her psyche was in one episode of season 2 even a theme, as seen here.
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SK3l8mGNhMg
I am not even a fan of the show and I get the emotional weight and impact of Lapis actions.
So⌠why is that not conveyed in the artwork? If you are so talented Dobson, why is none of the strain and despair on the character? The idea of a pic showing Lapis under water, longingly looking up, even in despair is a good basis for a fanart. But the execution lacks any emotional detail. You want to know how I would execute the thing if I had the artistic talent? Make the picture a huge horizontal pic, where we slowly decent from water surface down the ocean. The light getting dimmer. Blue turning into dark. The silhouette of a hand and an arm similar to Malachiteâs in the background, trying to travel up, the fingertips barely touching the surface. Heavy chains around the flesh. Symbolic of the fusion trying to break free and cause havoc. And down on the dark bottom, beaten and exhausted Lapis with tears in her eyes and chains all over her body like she is Jacob Marley, desperately trying to keep Malachite at bay for the sake of the only being on earth who ever showed just a little bit of kindness towards her.
Why canât we have something like this here, Dobson? If you were even remotely as original as the creators you want to be compared with, I think you could come up with something like that and perhaps even draw it.
But you know, his delusions of being as good as them is one thing. It is even funny.
Pissing over the Peanuts is another. Dobson, what are you trying to hint at?
That people comparing you to Charles Schulz and his creation is in your eyes automatically a sort of insult? That it is something that should at best only be a mockable punchline in a comparison?
Just to clarify a few things: I am NOT much of a fan of Charlie Brown and the Peanuts as a property. As a child, I was just not very entertained by them. Yes, I saw animated movies, episodes and specials of them here and there and my grandparents gave me volumes of them to read, but as a whole I never thought them quite as entertaining than other comics or cartoons I watched. Some parts of Peanuts animation felt to me often times like just dead air (especially parts of Snooby dancing with Woodstuck, as they had no function to move the plots forward) and I really could not stand how some characters treat Charles on a regular basis. I mean, we all agree that Lucy is one of the worst female characters in fiction and that even while we hate Family Guy, this clip likely gave some of us some sort of satisfaction, right?
 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZkJAx8FycI
But before the Peanuts fan out there go and want my head on a silver platter, let me make one thing clear: I may not like the Peanuts franchise⌠but I respect it and the man behind it.
Charles Schulz drew the comic strip from October 1950 till late 1999 (the final strip being finished months before it would be published on February 13 of 2000, one day after he died of colon cancer) , creating a total amount of 17,897 Peanutsâ strips. His work marks a major impact in the nature of newspaper comic strips and inspired many people out there, including Bill Watterson, to create comics or be in the field of animation. His achievements include among other things, that he created what many people consider the first animated Christmas special ever. The names of his creations became nicknames for the Apollo 10 command module and itsâ lunar modul. Four of the five Peanuts movies in existence (animated made for tv specials not withstanding now) were written by him. And the fifth was only not by him, because that one came out in 2015, a decade and a half after he died.
And speaking of things Schulz wrote for the Peanuts, let me mention two things. Two things that though I am not a fan of the Peanuts, I have mad respect for existing in the realm of animation. Two animated specials that stuck with me ever since I was eight.
âWhat have we learnt, Charlie Brown?â from 1983 and âWhy, Charlie Brown, Why?â from 1990.
In the first special, which functions as a semi sequel to the fourth Peanutsâ movie âBon Voyage, Charlie Brownâ, the characters actually travel across France and after ending up on Omaha Beach and Ypres the special turns into a tribute to the soldiers who fought in World War 1 and 2, elaborating on the sacrifices made during the war by showing actual footage of fights, recordings of Eisenhower and reciting the poem âIn Flanders Fieldsâ among other things. Do you know how impactful it is to learn about the world wars as a small kid, by being reminded of the actual sacrifices others made in order for your own grandparents to survive?
And speaking of grandparents, I lost my grandmother as a child by cancer. So when I saw the second special I mentioned, you can bet it stuck with me. After all, of all the things in the world, the Peanuts addressing the seriousness of cancer by having a story where a friend of Linus is diagnosed with leukemia and we follow the emotional impact it has on Linus and the girl? Again, I may not like the franchise, but I am not ashamed to admit I think the special treats the subject with a lot of respect and dignity while telling a good story. You bet your ass I get a bit teary eyed when the little girl survives her leukemia treatment and finally gets on that swing again. Those two specials alone are more mature than ž of the shit Dobson likes to gosh about, including his oh so precious gay space rocks. And just for those things existing I have respect for Schulz, his creation and the impact it had on so many people. As such, Dobson âbelittlingâ the Peanuts, at least for me, is a freaking insult. The only way Dobson could have been even more insulting is if he called Schulz something derogative.  Dobson should be glad if his lifeâs work in total could even amount to 10% of what Schulz has done and achieved.
Cause Dobson, you are NOT a Charles Schulz. Schulz served during the second world war on the front, fighting actual Nazis instead of calling idiots on the internet fascists for not liking Star Wars. He had integrity and work ethics that drove him to draw and write over 17.000 strips, while you can not even finish one FREAKING story. He knew how to tackle a mature subject, while you make shitty shipping jokes involving Ladybug and Cat Noir and claim Steven Universe knows how to be about psychological trauma, when it just romanticizes abuse. He may have drawn simplistically, but at least he could tell a joke instead of constantly berating others for not sharing his opinion. He did all of that and more without having graduated from college.
And what have you done, Andrew Dobson?
If Dobson reads this, there is one thing in my opinion he should take away from more than anything else: That if people compare him to Charles Schulzâs work, that it means a) he should not be ashamed of it and b) they overestimate him.
