SPN Season 15 Spoiler Sheet, update 10/3
Lots and lots of updates abound. I took out some old general stuff because this monster is huge (but it will only get shorter, sniff sniff) Spoilery goodness under the cut.
DISCLAIMER: This is gathered info from various sources. This is not confirmed information. Stuff in this WILL be wrong. Don’t take this too seriously. This is for fun. Also, if you use this info for another publication, please let me know as a courtesy. Don’t be a dick. It's all out there, but it hurts to see my same phrasing on other publications after all the work I’ve done to consolidate it…
General Info (oldest to newest). This is a blend of pre-COVID and post COVID, so some might change.
In an interview, Kripe indicated that the series ending would have “peace” for Sam and Dean
Misha will be in 15 out of 20 episodes this season (he’s missed 3 so far and I suspect will miss 14. Unclear about 16, 19, and 20).
Dean and Amara’s connection will be explored
JaxCon/Vegas Con spoilers:
Misha said the ending was “happier than he expected” but also had some sadness. He later used “sad and redemptive”
Misha mentioned that Claire will be mentioned on the show, but as of yet not appear.
Dean says the line “stop killing my people” (to god?)
Jensen said he doesn’t see how the story could continue past this season, but Jared said its more of “a see you later”
Al Cal posted a pic of a “thrown away” call sheet that seem to indicate Micheal, Lucifer, and a character named “Betty” interacting in the bunker. Unclear as to the validity, could be from 19 based on casting
Charlie (original flavor) will return
Filming resumed on Aug 18th. Per Canadian policy, they must quarantine for two weeks. Those quarantining seemed to include:
Fairly Clear: Jared, Jensen, Jake Abel (Micheal), Rob Benedict (Chuck/God) Mark Pelligrino (Lucifer), Al Cal (didn't need to quarantine, but he is definitely on set), Jim Beaver (Bobby)
Unclear/Rumored: Misha (he is being deliberately cagey), Osric Chau (Kevin- but likely for another project, he was a week ahead of everyone else)
Reasons Unlikely: Sam Smith (chemo treatment), Kim Rhodes (working at a camp during quarantine), Ruth Connell (posted from Malibu the entire time)
No idea: Shoshannah Stern
Jensen said sp 19 is more of a season finale, while 20 is a series finale. Repeated in interviews/livestreams.
Megan Fitz. complimented both Dabb’s and Glynn’s writing on twitter. Not sure if it is in reference to rewrites or the special retrospective that is planned.
Jensen indicated that the ending did change per COVID protocols. Later interviews (Variety) confirmed this, but it seemed to indicate the changes were in regards to how many people filmed at once (crowd scenes, recurring characters returning)
Misha is being very, very cagey about where he was. Some live streams seem to indicate he is not at home, but he has yet to confirm- his presence in 19/20 is hard to track. In an interview with Metaverse, he was in bed in a hotel looking space and you could see mountains in the background. He was not on set for the first week of filming, so he could be a week behind.
Misha has thrown around the words “final”  and “what he <Misha> would have wanted” per Cas’ ending. “Sad/Proud” and “poignant” were also used. His latest line is “sad but satisfying”
The final episodes will premier October 8th. The finale will air Nov 19th in conjunction with an hour long special.
Dabb confirmed to TV line the episode 19/20 explanation Jensen’s mentioned- For the most part, we wrap up a big chunk of our mythology in Episode 19,Episode 20 is more character-based and is more concerned with Sam, Dean and this family they’ve built around them than it is with figuring out the Case of the Week.
When talking about the lightheartedness of returning on ep 14, Dabb said deeply depressing and upsetting episodes are coming (USAToday). He also said we would see “new sides” of Jack, Cas, and Billie. A revisit of Chuck and Amara’s “sibling issues” as well is on tap. Jared said sacrifices are coming.
From TV Line-  re the battle with Chuck. Allies will return, buit was repeated several times in the article that is comes down to Sam and Dean. Jack will struggle with getting his soul back but will be helped by Cas.
It was confirmed there will be no appearances by mamma and papa Winchester, possible due to COVID. (TVLine)

This is the flashback ep
From TVLine- “It worked not only as a case right now, but also as something that informed the journey Sam and Dean have taken, where they started as kids, how they kind of came together and then how that has [led up] to the point that they are, emotionally, when the episode airs. So it ended up being a really good reflection of our guys now, telling a story about our guys then, which, to me, are always the best versions of those types of flashback stories.”
Episode 15x17
Title: Unity
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:  ONE WAY OR ANOTHER – Dean (Jensen Ackles) hits the road with Jack (Alexander Calvert) who needs to complete a final ritual in the quest to beat Chuck (guest star Rob Benedict). Title: Inherit the Earth
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
Written by: bucklelimg

Airdate: Nov 12th
Photos:
Promo:
Sneak Peak:
Castiel ? unknown Jack ? yes
Guest stars: Jake Abel (Micheal), Mark Pelligrino (Lucifer)
Other Spoilers/info:
Production shut down as a precaution for coronavirus on 3/13, two days into filming. It is scheduled to start again on Aug 18th.
Jensen indicated there might be some re-writes for this ep to account for COVID protocols.
When they started filming, they indicated they were on day two. So maybe they could only use some of the scenes they shot? Then they added an extra day all called it day 9. COVID protocols makes things take longer
AlCal was definitely on set.
Jake Abel is definitely on set, and he posted an instagram story with his trailer and Lucifer’s (Mark Pelligrino)
Some filming was done at a gas station called Showalter’s (name of the director) with Jared, Jensen, and Alex
Jake “Spoiler King” Abel filmed a video showing chairs for Jared, Jensen, and Alex as well as Rob Benedict (Chuck/God). They were filming near a lake with a mountain view (that looked similar to where Cas died in season 13)
Rob Benedict posted it was his last day in Vancouver, indicating we won't see Chuck past this episode? Or very very briefly in 20? Jake Abel posted a similar message, also baiting fans about Misha’s whereabouts
Scene “28” took several days and seemed to go across both 19 and 20? So they might have done some combo filming?
 Episode 15x20
Title: Carry On
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
Written by: Dabb
Director: Bob Singer
Filming Dates: 8/28- 9/10
Airdate: November 19th

Sneak Peak:
Castiel ? maaaaybe? Jack ? maaaaybe?
Guest stars: Jim Beaver
Other Spoilers/info:
Jensen indicated filming would take two weeks, longer than usual (looks like a 9 day shoot, with a day off for Labor Day)
According to Superwiki, 9/3 was the last day on the bunker set, the final days are on location.
Scene “28” took several days and seemed to go across both 19 and 20? So they might have done some combo filming?
Filming locations seemed to include a barn (pic with a stunt guy showed wooden walls and straw) and a lake (not the mountain lake from 19), and a forest. Filming signs spotted at Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve.
Jim Beaver confirmed his appearance on Twitter
There was a pic of J2 with baby on a bridge. Baby had her original plates. They seem to be wearing the same clothes they were in the pilot. There may be grey (??) In their hair, but that could be lighting
Misha posted some creation videos, saying he had been on an impromptu camping trip. He was back in his house. They were posted on the last day of filming and he had pretty decent scruff. He also mentioned that it was the last day of filming and he wasn't up there.
The show officially wrapped at 6:25 on 9/10
Jared said “the last time Sam and Dean see each other is the last time Jared and Jensen film together” but seem to imply that was not the final scene? It was a confusing answer to a question about filming the final scene.
IMDB credits a vampire?

TRY ME (PART SEVEN)
Tumblr media
Summary: You couldn’t stand Bucky Barnes, but as a part of the Avengers - You had no choice but to tolerate him. Until one day, mission gone ary - you realize that something else sparks between the two of you, in the most unexpected way.
Warnings: NSFW (18+), Swearing, Violence
Pairing: Reader (Y/N) x Bucky Barnes
Fear and nervousness coursed through your veins, you walked slowly off the airship. You could almost hear your heartbeat ringing throughout your ears. Everything was blur, the way Steve briefed everyone, leaving the big details of your shared discussion under wraps. No one knew what you were about to do, only Steve. To not draw attention, you paired with Bucky. This mission was set at sea. That was where you signaled the trade off. You knew that if things went south, Steve could get them out the team out of there quickly. You were quiet, Bucky clearly taking notice.
“Whats going on with you, Doll?” He cocked his gun, assembling it to his uniform.
“Nothing.” You smiled as best you could, tapping softly to his chest.
“You’re a horrible liar.” Bucky breathed out, looking over your features.
“We’ve got two men heading your way lovebirds.” Nat’s voice clicked in the com.
“Nice nickname.” You smiled, making your way to the men.
Bucky made his way behind you, taking the other man in one swift movement. Learning your favorite move from Natasha, you quickly wrapped your legs around the man’s throat, hearing a loud crack he fell to the ground. You sighed, removing yourself.
“That was sexy.” Bucky winked, “Maybe you could wrap your legs like that around me later.”
“Your pressing your com button, Romeo.” Sam’s voice spoke in both of your ears.
You laughed lightly.
“Can you please not talk about your sexcapades?” Clint’s voice piped up.
“Bad enough we can’t sleep because you two idiots.” Sam’s voice was teasing.
“Shut up they’re in love.” Nat laughed lightly, “By the way I take credit for that sexy move.”
The both you and Bucky smiled at your teams remarks. You made your way down the ship, keeping an eye out for any unwanted adversaries. As you neared the control room, you knew what was coming up.
“Are you pissed off at me for some reason?” Bucky sighed.
“No, why would you think that?” You turned to him, smiling softly.
“I dont always know with you, Doll. For some time there you hated my guts.” He chuckled.
“I only hated you, because you were being stupid.” You winked, “Not to mention I may still have a grudge against you for that leggy blonde you sauntered in front of me.”
“I’ll have you know I didn’t sleep with her.” He chuckled, “What about that drunk idiot you brought home?”
“Didn’t sleep with him either, Babe.” You laughed.
“I see how it is, Im just too good, can’t have anyone else.” Bucky playfully nudged you, his mouth close to your ear.
“Someone’s feeling cocky.” You raised a brow in his direction.
He motioned below his belt, looking down with a grin on his face, “Im sorry, I thought you liked that.”
You erupted in laughter at his actions, sometimes you wondered how on earth you hated him for so long.
“It’s time.” Steve’s voice was in your left ear, the separate line you both had, so no one from the team could hear you. You smile fell, remembering what was about to happen.
“Alright, I’ve got about 15 Agents in the control room. Rendezvous in 5.” Steve now spoke on the Team line.
“Wanda and I will take guard.” Sam piped up.
“Nat and I will take some of them out. Who’s getting the hard drive?” Clint’s voice spoke.
“Leave that to me” Steve’s voice was almost too quiet.
You remembered that he told the team there was a hard drive that needed to be extracted, that was lie. What was about to happen was much more complicated. You, Bucky, and Steve would enter the control room. Sam, Wanda, Clint, and Natasha would wait outside until Steve gave the go ahead to take the Agents out. Once the trade off is made, they would get the hell out of there with the control now in their hands. You blinked softly, as you finally made your way to Steve. The three of you waited a moment.
“Ready?” Steve said quietly to you.
You fashioned your weapon, nodding slowly to him. As you walked through the door, each Hydra operative stood very still. Bucky’s gun flew upwards, ready to shoot off whoever came his way. But no one moved. Bucky looked to you and Steve, clearly confused. Steve sighed, nodding his head to you. You dropped your gun, putting your hands behind your head.
“Ah. Looks like you made the right decision, Agent.” The man who had visited you made his way behind the men, “Ah, I see you’v brought you little plaything as well.”
“Im here, you got me. Leave him alone.” You breathed out.
“Y/N, whats going on?” Bucky’s gun held tightly to his jaw.
“Oh she did not tell you, did she Winter Soldier? Your precious little lover was a former Hydra Agent, a good one too…Until she left to play House with you, and the Avengers.” The man sneered.
You looked to Bucky’s eyes, your hands still over your head. He blinked to you, his eyes tearing up.
“Take her.” The man snapped, and just like that, your arms were yanked away. The men lifted your arms above you again, cuffing you tightly to the pipes above you. Bucky lunged forward, only to have Steve keep his promise. He held Bucky back, pain written across his face.
“Why the hell do you need her?” Bucky struggled under Steve’s hold.
“She’s going to be an example, Barnes. That no hero can be trusted. I am sure going to enjoy her blood spilling for Hydra. A new rise shall come, and the Avengers will fall.” The man hissed out, making his way to you, “Why not give a little preview?”
A sharp knife pressed to your lower abdomen, the sharp tip pressing into you. You winced lightly, trying to hold back showing any pain.
“Stop.” Bucky glared to him.
The man ignored, pressing harder into you you cried out this time, you began to feel the blood fall lightly against your skin.
“I swear to God i’ll kill you.” Bucky’s voice now boomed across the room.
“Bucky its okay.” You looked to him, trying to catch his attention, “Steve. Go.”
“No, are you crazy? What the hell are you doing?” Bucky breathed out, his eyes now red around the rim.
“Bucky, Go. I’m fine.” You breathed, smiling to him, trying your best to reassure him.
Steve began to tug at his arm, Bucky looking to you, heartbreak crossing his features.
“Dont leave me.” Bucky’s words pierced all the way to your soul, and you were ready to give up, to run back to him. But you knew if you did, they’d kill him.
You nodded to Steve as he pulled Bucky away, struggling. Before the both of them left the door, The man before you thrusted forward, The wind taken completely out of your lungs. You looked down to see the knife sticking from your wound. The room began to blur, and blackness filled your vision. Bucky’s scream was the last thing you heard, before you passed out.
You jolted awake at the loud hum of your surroundings. You thrashed your arms forward, a jolt of pain shooting through your body. Your vision coming to you, you looked around to see nothing but darkness. You looked up, now feeling a cloth wrapped in your mouth. You saw your hands still cuffed to something, your wrists red and sore from the struggle of trying to break free. Your eyes traveled downwards, to see your abdomen wrapped tightly in bandages. Your bare skin was smudged and dirty, and you were left in your bra. Tears fell silently as terror began to surface. You looked around to see any clue as to where you were. You had no idea. The floors were wet, and dark, as well the rest of the room. It was cold, and dark.
“Ah, I see you’re awake.”
The man who definitely stabbed you walked slowly into the wet, dark room. You thrashed, not caring what pain it caused you.
“Why so angry, Agent?” The man laughed, removing the cloth from your mouth.
“You asshole. You did that so he would see, he shouldn’t have had to witness you doing that to me.” You cried out.
“I wanted to leave him with a pretty goodbye image.”
Anger rose in you, not caring how much pain it would cause you again, you thrusted your leg forward. You placed a hard kick to his jaw, clearly causing damage. His face now resided with blood.
“Im going to kill you.” You hissed out.
“I wouldn’t be taking so confidently sweetheart, Shield will not come for you.” He wiped his mouth.
You kept quiet, his words taking no toll on you.
“Now you are quiet? You are truly a wonderful Agent, such a shame you wasted your time on the Avengers….Even The Winter Soldier. Do they really mean that much to you, are you willing to risk your life for little playtoy, You Winter Soldier?” He laughed manically.
You huffed, spitting blood out of your mouth.
“Try Me.” You hissed.
“You should have known Agent…..Hydra never takes up on a deal with Shield. You should know he is going to be the first kill order. Such a waste of a great weapon. Maybe we will kill him, or maybe put his brain back in the blender. He wouldn’t even remember you.” The man laughed again.
You thrashed angrily, screaming out to him. You felt the blood begin to trickle again.
“I dont fight for shield.” You sneered, knowing that if the plan had been carried out right. The time was getting near.
“Oh, is that so? Who the hell do you fight for then? Bucky Barnes?” The man laughed again.
As if the time couldn’t have been more perfect, the door flew open. Thankfully they found you, You could hear the gunshots outside now, You knew your team wouldn’t abandon you, and you knew they could take them out. Bucky walked through, and your heart felt like it leap from your chest, you’ve never been more happy to see anyone in your whole life. The man protested, empty threats filling the air, Bucky kicked him backwards and with one punch, Bucky knocked him out.
“You’re damn right she does.” Bucky breathed out.
You smiled to him, tears filling your eyes. Suddenly realizing, the bandage was soaked, and your head began to spin. Bucky rushed to you, uncuffing your bruised hands. As soon as you were free, your legs gave out underneath you, dropping to his touch. His eyes scanned you, he was clearly terrified.
“Dont you dare.” Bucky took a sharp breath.
“Im fine.” You coughed, and you could clearly feel the blood forming in your throat.
“Don’t leave me, Doll.” He smiled softly, pressing to your wound.
“Wouldn’t dream of it.” You blinked, you couldn’t help but tear up.
He smiled, ripping apart what clothing he had to cover your wound.
You noticed Steve rushing into the room, calling for medical quickly.
Your breathing began to slow, and you started to blink quickly. You looked at Bucky, his face was drenched with what looked like tears.
“So goddamn stubborn. Keep your eyes open.” Bucky cried, laughing softly.
“Alright.” You smiled to him, and your vision began to blur again. You saw various people around you now above you. A pair of piercing blue eyes met yours, and you felt a familiar touch to your lips.
Gentle.
Soft.
Warm.
Bucky’s.

Mid-season AFL All-Australian team: Big names still showing the way
Maintaining the highest of standards in AFL football has never been harder than it is in 2017. For teams or players.
Approaching the halfway mark of the season, last year’s runner-up has had a shocker. Sydney are in 15th spot on the ladder at 3-7 and need something of a miracle to even reach the finals. Their grand final conquerors, the Western Bulldogs, have fared a lot better, but at 6-4 they too have had their struggles this season.

For individuals, it’s about doing everything possible to make the good form of one season spill over to the next, the pressure from within great enough, let alone the relentless scrutiny from outside.
And to that end, we’ve at least had a good glimpse so far in 2017 at what makes the great players great.
Tight call: Brodie Grundy of the Magpies and Crow Sam Jacobs. Photo: Getty Images
I went into the process of picking my mid-season All-Australian team expecting the usual revolving door of players in and out of last year’s official best 22. And while there’s still the requisite amount of change, the results were a big tick for the AFL’s elite.
Last year when I did this exercise I could find room for only seven players who had been named All-Australians just 10 or 11 games previously. This time, just on half of the 2016 official All-Australian line-up have retained their spots.
Alex Rance, Rory Sloane, Lance Franklin, Toby Greene, Eddie Betts, West Coast’s Josh Kennedy, Patrick Dangerfield, Joel Selwood, Dustin Martin and Marcus Bontempelli have all been good enough again this season to make my mid-season 22. And that’s no mean feat considering the company joining them.
I’ve found room for a couple of young guns who have taken giant strides very quickly – in-demand GWS on-baller Josh Kelly and Melbourne midfield bull Clayton Oliver, along with Tom Mitchell, a man who has made a change of clubs pay off big time – but the bulk of this team comprises players who have set high standards for some time.
Whatever some critics say, Tom Mitchell has been phenomenal for the Hawks.
Michael Hurley, Scott Pendlebury, Robbie Gray and Jeremy Cameron have been All-Australians previously. And Adelaide pair Sam Jacobs and Rory Laird and Carlton’s Sam Docherty have been nominated in All-Australian selection squads before.
Contentious selections? Well, there’s always some in any of these teams, but I’d defy anyone to suggest any member of this 22 doesn’t have at worst very strong claims on a spot. As usual, there was a long roll call of potential midfielders who missed out. I also found the choice of ruckman difficult.
Three ruckmen have stood out in 2017 – Jacobs, Collingwood’s Brodie Grundy, and the Giants’ own giant Shane Mumford.
Mumford has a significant edge over the other two in terms of percentage of hit-outs to advantage so far this season. Grundy wins more of the ball around the ground, while Jacobs fares best for scoreboard impact.
But Jacobs has been a huge part of Adelaide’s pace-setting form this season, a key factor in giving first use to a high-performing midfield that pre-season had been seen as a potential Achilles heel. He also rucks some serious minutes. That’s good enough for me to give him the nod going solo, with (presuming this team was playing a game) one of the key position players to give him a brief chop-out.
Competition for spots in the defence was tight, too. With particular apologies to West Coast’s Jeremy McGovern, St Kilda’s Dylan Roberton and GWS’s Zac Williams, I’ve gone for Rance and Hurley in the key posts, Jeremy Howe as a “floater” or third tall and Laird, Elliot Yeo and Sam Docherty as the smaller backmen.
Yeo ranks high for disposals and is second in the AFL for intercept possessions. He’s been a constant in a side that’s been up and down, a good reason he’s running second in the AFL Coaches Association player of the year award. Docherty, meanwhile, still doesn’t get enough raps.
Yes, he’s frequently been used as a spare man, but that’s a role that still requires intuitive reading of the play, and Docherty does it brilliantly, averaging more than 27 disposals and ranked third for rebound 50s.
Youngsters Kelly and Oliver definitely deserve spots, the former averaging just under 30 disposals per game, the latter just over. And so, I believe, does Mitchell.
It’s fashionable these days to question a player’s ball use when he collects high stats in a losing team. That’s precisely what happened to Mitchell when he had an amazing 50 disposals for Hawthorn in round nine against Collingwood, the next best Hawk with half that many.
But using “metres gained” in Mitchell’s case is a misnomer. He’s an in-and-under ball-winner and distributor. And to average more possessions than any player in the AFL (35.4) in his first year at a club going through a transition and which early in the piece was being belted has been a phenomenal effort.
There are also a few players in this team – Franklin, Pendlebury, Dangerfield and Selwood – who are, these days, regularly marked harshly, victims of their own lofty standards more than any pedestrian form.
As good as that quartet have been over the journey, I reckon their performances so far this season have been every bit as solid as the seasons in which they won All-Australian honours. I’m very comfortable with them in this 22, that’s for sure.
The very best players in the game are only ever, literally, an awkward fall away from dropping out of contention. Not to mention the hundreds of competitors snapping at their heels for similar acclaim.
That so many of my mid-year All-Australian team have been around the mark for as long as they have speaks volumes not only of their durability, but their status as stars for the long haul as well as the here and now.

The best – and the rest – of 2016 AFL trades
Rating the wisdom or otherwise of an AFL club’s recruiting decisions has never been an easy task, and one growing more complicated by the season.
Even when it came to players picked up on AFL national draft day, how long was sufficient enough time to pass judgment on a player’s worth against the selection with which he’d been taken?

That business is even harder now given the advent of the trading of picks, exchanges involving future picks and bids on players from football academies, plus the advent of free agency and the capacity to also list delisted free agents.
One constant in the ever-changing player marketplace, though, remains the instant gratification delivered via the trade table. While what’s been given up to acquire a player may remain the subject of vigorous debate, supporters are better placed to give a thumbs up or down on those brought into their club with whose names they are already familiar.

Nearly 40 established AFL players changed clubs last trade period. Some, like former champion Hawthorn pair Sam Mitchell and Jordan Lewis in a blaze of publicity, others, such as former GWS second-round draft pick Pat McKenna, who headed to Melbourne, barely raising a flicker of recognition.
Approaching the halfway mark of the season, who among that group have been the hits, and who, for whatever reasons, the misses? Which clubs have got it right or wrong thus far?
Hawthorn took an enormous gamble letting veterans Mitchell and Lewis go, a move many still question.
For all the ripples, the Hawks in 2017 still have a gun midfielder called Mitchell leading the way. Just one with a different Christian name.
Tom Mitchell has fitted right in with the Hawks.  Photo: Getty Images
The former Swan Tom Mitchell has clearly been the pick of the trade-ins to date, his average 34.1 disposals a game ranking him No.1 in the AFL among the ball-winners, ranked sixth in the competition for contested possession and tackles, seventh for uncontested possession.
Mitchell has had fewer than 30 disposals in just one of his eight games, and he still managed to pick up 27 in that one. The delivery still may not be quite as crisp as that of his namesake, but no-one could argue that the former Sydney midfielder hasn’t done all that’s been asked and then some.
New Magpie Chris Mayne has so far offered little return on a $500,00-a-year deal.  Photo: Getty Images
His new Hawk teammate Jaeger O’Meara was winning enough of the ball early without necessarily having much impact. But a knee injury has kept the former Sun star out of all but one of the past five games, and he doesn’t look like returning soon.
Hawthorn, via Mitchell, can at least claim some success on the trade front. Which might be more than their opponent on Saturday.
The Magpies brought in Daniel Wells, Chris Mayne, Will Hoskin-Elliott and Lynden Dunn to the mix for 2017. Out of a possible 32 collective games, that quartet have played a total of 17, with Hoskin-Elliott the only one to play more than three.
He was handy in round two with three goals against Richmond, but has been patchy since. Wells’ silky disposal has given the Pies what they lack, but it’s only been available in three games due to a pre-season calf injury. Dunn was handy against Geelong’s Tom Hawkins but hadn’t been picked prior to that round six clash.
Mayne, meanwhile, continues to ruffle Pie fans’ feathers with little return on a $500,000-a-year salary. Mayne made Collingwood’s round one team only as a late inclusion, did little in the next two games before being dropped, and has been only fair in four games in the reserves.
The two West Australian clubs have done well out of Hawthorn, Mitchell for West Coast, and another premiership Hawk in Brad Hill beginning to look very ominous for Fremantle. But some of the best performers on the trade front have been those without the bigger reputations, Richmond’s trio of trade recruits underlining that.
While one of the biggest names in last year’s trades, Brett Deledio, left the Tigers for GWS but is still yet to play a game after a pre-season calf injury, three more tradees – Dion Prestia, Josh Caddy and Toby Nankervis – arrived at Punt Road.
It was the first pair which had clearly the bigger reputations, but while Caddy has battled poor form and Prestia had only middling form before injuring a hamstring, ruckman Nankervis has been a revelation.
With only a dozen AFL games to his name, Nankervis has given the Tigers real big-man presence, aggressive at the ruck contest and around the ground, competitive even against the likes of Sam Jacobs and Aaron Sandilands.
And three more “middling” trades in terms of profile but unmitigated successes must surely be Zach Tuohy at Geelong, Jack Steele at St Kilda and Carlton’s Caleb Marchbank.
The Irishman Tuohy has provided the Cats with a ton of drive from half-back, his average 26 disposals easily the best figure of his seven-year career. Steele, another Giant squeezed out by a glut of talent, is equal sixth in the AFL for tackles. And Marchbank looks a definite long-term bet for the Blues in a key defence post, where he’s played smart football. He’s particularly good on the intercept.
Marchbank seems destined to become a big name. Those who already were when they were traded last summer are mostly the subject of “ifs” or “buts” – for Deledio and Travis Cloke, now at the Bulldogs, those “ifs” relate to injury, and for Melbourne’s Jordan Lewis, whose form has been sound in the games he has played, the considerable “but” a costly three-game suspension.
Those fortunes could still change for the better, with Cloke back on deck for the Dogs on Friday night after missing a month with broken ribs, Deledio having set his sights on a round 14 debut with the Giants.
Their football will need to be outstanding over the back end of the season, however, for the ledger in those clubs’ supporters’ minds to be better balanced between expectation and reality. The trade table is still the one source of recruiting in which the thumbs up or down is, by comparison, a relatively straightforward call.
