Okay, that doesn't sound as bad as it is to me on its own. Will probably seem worse with context. Here goes, and buckle in, it's a long one.

Five years ago, I (20 at the time, she/her) had this friend, who I'm going to call Alex (21 at the time, genderfluid). Alex was in this relationship with a pansexual guy who I'm going to call Mark (24 at the time, he/him). To me and the rest of Alex's friends, the way Mark treated Alex sent up some major red flags. He was insanely possessive, always spoke over Alex whenever Alex made a point or talked about something he didn't like/approve of, whenever they weren't together he'd be texting or calling Alex to ask where Alex was and who Alex was with, and would say who he thought Alex should and shouldn't associate with and enforced it to the best of his ability.

I and the rest of Alex's friend group would try and bring it up as gently as we possibly could, and Alex would either become quiet and unresponsive until we changed the subject or lash out and tell us it was just a phase in the relationship that 'all couples go through' and that we should just 'leave it alone'.

It remained a wedge issue between us until a mutual friend decided we should have a big lart at her house after a Pride Event. Alex and Mark arrived together and stayed joined at the hip until somewhere between 1 am and 1 thirty am, which was when I lost sight of them.

At 1 thirty one, I went out into the mutual friend's back garden to get some air because the house was stupidly hot and smelled like weed. I found Alex crying. After a while, he (preferred pronouns at the time were he/him) told me he'd seen Mark kissing someone he didn't know. He also said that he didn't want to go back to the flat he and Mark shared because of it. I offered to let him stay at mine for the remainder of the night, saying we'd talk about it in the morning.

At that point, Mark came outside and saw me with Alex. He said something like "Babe, I know I messed up, but you don't have to show me how bad it feels." I said to Alex that we were leaving and we made it to the side gate when Mark called "Please, I can make this right, we can be a couple again. I just... I have needs, you know?" Alex didn't respond, but I did. I shouted that his needs weren't a get-out-of-jail-free card for being a shitty person or something like that. I think I would be a JAH if I were asking about that situation

About a week after the party, Alex and Mark broke up. Alex and I both moved away, but to different places and we lost contact.

Anyway, I sat down to write something (I won't say what) and it involved a toxic relationship. About halfway through writing, I stopped and realised I was basing it on Alex and Mark's relationship, and started getting paranoid about them seeing it if I put it out into the world. I abandoned that story, but I really enjoyed writing the parts that weren't about the toxic relationship.

A common thing I see in canon and OC muses alike is that when upset in some way they enter a berserker rage, feral state, or some other term meaning “totally out of control but really powerful” This is not an inherently bad thing for a character, and for some it’s an integral part of them. There’s nothing wrong with that. But I have noticed that there are some ways that people tend to use it in RP that other muns may find annoying. Some people will use it to “one-up” other muses, to make their muse seem cooler and more badass or more tragic than everyone else, as a bragging point or a thing to warn people/angst about dramatically. Of course, a character probably SHOULD warn other people about this, ethically speaking, as it’s dangerous, and it is realistically something most people would have angst about and that’s valid, but many muns write it in a way geared to get all the attention, drama, and pity on their muse for it. (This is NOT a problem if your muse is DELIBERATELY trying to do EXACTLY THAT because they’re an attention-grubber, wants to impress, wants pity, etc.) It’s basically how you write it, and it can be a hard note to hit. I’m afraid I can’t give advice on exactly how to manager this balancing act, but it is something to consider. Some muns will use their muse’s “berserker rage” or “feral mode” to avoid conflict or “win” every conflict. They either slip into it every time they’re disagreed with, or it’s used as a reason for why people SHOULDN’T disagree with them or it’s THEIR fault this happens. Again, if your muse is deliberately meant to be someone who is exploiting their condition in order to be coddled, that’s fine, but if that is not your intent, try to be sure your muse doesn’t do this. Similarly, some muns use this as an excuse for their muse to hurt other characters without their muse being accountable for it. Since it’s not something their muse can control ICly and thus can’t be rightly blamed for, some muns will just decide to whip it out any time they think some other muse needs to be taught a lesson and doesn’t want to deal with their muse having to face any consequences for being the one to teach it. Other muns can tell when you are doing this, and it’s obnoxious. Some muns (over)use this for drama/romance. For instance, maybe there’ only one person who can calm their down during this state and this us used to show they’re their true love. This can be done very well, we’ve all seen a moment like hat in media that touched us deeply, but it is a cliche and can be very cheesy or cringey if, sloppily or poorly done, or lose its effect if it happens over and over. Again, I can’t really offer advice on how to do it well, merely point out it can be an issue when NOT done well. Finally, many muns will use this condition as a substitute for actual flaws. The muse will be devoid of any actual personal flaws, with their “feral rage” being the sole thing “wrong” with them. The thing is though, this isn’t a real character flaw, as it’s something the character cannot control or be blamed for, and it engenders sympathy for them and a cool factor more than anything else. If the person refuses to actually try to get their condition under control, or continuously put themselves near others they may harm/in situations where they may go berserk near people, THAT is a flaw, as it shows callous disregard for other people, but the muns rarely realize that or treat it as such, and the condition in itself is, again, not a flaw. It’s a challenge or an obstacle, in the same way that a mental disorder or being a member of a despised group is a challenge or obstacle, but not a flaw. This is not to say that having this trait is bad, or you shouldn’t write a character with it. That’s NOT what I’m saying at all. I am saying that, in the same way one should be cautious with extremely powerful characters or tragic/traumatic backstories or any number of other perfectly-fine-but-easily-done-wrong traits, one should be cautious not to misuse this trait as a “get out of jail free” card, a way to win everything, a way to gain sympathy/attention/drama or a way to one-up other muses, or as a substitute for flaws. Also, everything I said here can also be applied to possession, the “super-powered evil side” trope, and similar traits.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, S5

Overall I’d say this was the best season since the first one, and the ending it gives the story is a satisfying and moving one. I really liked how the show gestures back at some canonical She-Ra concepts - the rebels hiding out in the Whispering Woods, for example - while at the same time doing things that are completely outside the original canon’s scope - She-Ra in Space! And I thought the ensemble was well-used, main characters, side characters, and antagonists all getting their own storylines and resolutions in a way that isn’t easy with such a wide cast of characters, but was handled with elegance.

But look, if you’ve read anything I’ve written or tweeted about this show over the last four seasons, you know I have fundamental issues with how it chooses to direct its storytelling and characterization energies. It doesn’t come as much of a surprise that the concluding season didn’t address most of those issues. A big part of that is that the show I wanted She-Ra to be clearly wasn’t the one Stevenson and her team were making, and that’s fine. But I find it genuinely strange that of the three series that are obvious thematic and emotional successors to Avatar: The Last Airbender - She-Ra, The Legend of Korra, and The Dragon Prince - none of them reach the same heights of plotting and characterization, and at least in She-Ra’s case I think this is rooted in an unwillingness to complicate a rather simplistic central theme. 

(Also, at least part of the problem has to be that the show’s five-season, 52-episode run spanned only seventeen months. Even if you add in the production period for the first season, that’s a truly bonkers schedule that must have told in the depth and complexity of the final product.)

Take Catra, for example. If you’d asked me where I thought her storyline was going before watching the season, I would have said pretty confidently that she was going to get at least some level of redemption story. After all, her situation at the end of S4 perfectly positions her to switch sides by stripping her of all the things she thought she wanted and placing her in a precarious position that she might not be able to talk or manipulate her way out of. The season premiere establishes those facts even further by making Horde Prime a literal monomaniacal monster. And yeah, it’s pretty clever that in a series that places so much emphasis on the importance of friendship as the path towards moral growth, the villain is narcissism personified, a person who has no use for others except as they reflect himself, and subjugate themselves entirely to his will. So it’s not surprising that, finally cut off from any realistic path towards power and made to feel her own vulnerability, Catra would finally start doing some soul-searching and realize how badly she’d treated the people who cared about her. 

(Though if you’ll allow me a snide moment, I can’t help but point out that in the Best Redemption Story Ever, Zuko actually gets all the power and approval he’d thought he wanted before realizing that it means nothing without his honor and self-respect. I think we all know that if Catra had gotten a position of power from Horde Prime, she would have felt no loyalty towards Adora and Etheria, and helped him to conquer them.)

Similarly, I think I would have given you better odds than even that the series would end with some romantic storyline between Catra and Adora. And I don’t want to downplay the importance of depicting a story like that - before the end of the season I found myself wondering why Bow and Glimmer’s romance was being depicted so chastely, before realizing that the writers wanted the first kiss on the show to be between two women. I respect that impulse and the representation the show ends up delivering - we’ve come a long way from Korra and Asami holding hands at the end of their show. But at the same time, I can’t help but feel that the way that the show arrives at this point requires a significant rewriting of Catra’s personality and character arc, not to mention the history of her relationship with Adora.

As the fifth season argues it, the root of Catra’s resentment of Adora is romantic disappointment. She complains that “Adora doesn’t want me. Not the way I want her”, and leaves the team when Adora decides to risk her life by destroying the Heart of Etheria because she takes it as a personal rejection. But this is, to say the least, a massive whitewashing of what we’ve seen of Catra and Adora’s past relationship. In flashbacks, particularly the ones from S4, it’s made clear that even when they were on the same wavelength, Catra and Adora’s friendship was toxic and dysfunctional. Catra may have always loved Adora, but it was a selfish love, one that saw Adora as an instrument for the validation of Catra’s confidence and self-image, and denied her any opportunity for pursuing her own interests and desires. 

There’s room for a story about Catra growing past that selfishness and learning to love generously and openly, of course, but we don’t get that story in S5. When Catra complains that in sacrificing herself for Etheria, Adora is refusing to want things for herself, it’s not an honest character moment. Catra has never cared what Adora wants - in fact, her refusal to acknowledge Adora’s right to make her own choices and take a path in life that left Catra behind has been the crux of their enmity since the series premiere. Having her suddenly change tunes doesn’t feel organic, but like a parachuted-in personality transplant.

To put it back in ATLA terms, Catra was never Zuko. Adora is Zuko - someone raised with bad principles who nevertheless has enough innate compassion, and a powerful moral compass, that with a little support - emotional or magical - they can break through their indoctrination and become a hero. Catra is Azula - obsessed with power, possessed of very little compassion for others, and, most importantly, seriously emotionally unbalanced. I’m not saying someone like that can’t be helped and can’t become a better person, but it takes a great deal more than what the last season of She-Ra has given us.

Meanwhile, if you look at Adora’s storyline, on one level it gives us what I’ve wanted for a while. I’ve complained a lot about how Adora has remained static throughout the middle seasons of the show while other characters - Glimmer, Catra, Scorpia - got character arcs and changed meaningfully. One effect of that has been to create a strange disconnect between the show’s central themes and its main character. In a story that is supposedly all about the importance of friendship and personal connections, the heroine is someone who achieves her heroic destiny by rejecting those connections in favor of a more global morality, and who then had to struggle with balancing her sense of global responsibility with personal attachments - to Glimmer and Bow as much as to Catra.

The fifth season finally circles back to these ideas and places Adora at its center. I thought her conversation with Mara about having the right to be more than She-Ra, and to do more with her life than sacrifice it for others, was a really powerful moment. I just feel like, once again, the foundation wasn’t laid for it. First because Adora’s growth has been mostly ignored during the intervening three seasons, and second because this is a character arc that clashes with the show’s friendship-above-all message in ways that aren’t really acknowledged.

When you think about it, the moments when Adora has been the most herself are the ones when she rejects toxic friendship and stands up for herself - in her confrontations with Catra, especially over the course of the first season, and when she defies Glimmer’s decision to use the Heart of Etheria and the end of S4 and destroys the sword. So to the already complicated issue of where to draw the line between the things you want for yourself and the things you owe others, you add the thorny matter of when to detach yourself from toxic friends who see you only as a means to an end. Except that She-Ra never really grapples with this extra wrinkle - and again, Catra’s hasty personality transplant plays into this, because we get to pretend that the only problem she and Adora ever had was romantic miscommunication.

In a season that is all about putting aside differences and personal grievances to fight for a common cause, there is a refreshing number of instances that remind us that those grievances are still relevant - the fact that nobody will ever really trust Shadow Weaver, for example, or the other princesses calling Entrapta out on her seeming indifference to the consequences of her actions (though in this case, and yet again, Entrapta’s neuroatypicality is used as a get-out-of-jail-free card from taking personal responsibility). Even Glimmer gets to spend a bit of time in the dog house, at the same time that she and Bow work together and save each other’s lives. But once again, when it comes to the main character, we can’t let pesky matters like a lifetime of toxic friendship get in the way of a happy ending in which lesbian love conquers all.

There was a good story to be told here, one that could have easily ended up in the same place as the series actually did. But it required actually delving into the complexity of a character like Adora, and dealing honestly with the problems in her relationship with Catra. She-Ra ends - as it did throughout it run - by choosing to paper over those difficulties in favor of a friendship-conquers-all message that is a great deal less convincing.

(Also, am I wrong or are there a lot of loose ends still? I don’t think we ever find out who Adora was, what Greyskull is, and what She-Ra actually is.)

But both discussions had a comparison of what a "healthy" relationship for Lucy should be. It's interesting points made on both sides and it did make me look at the wider difference between each man and their relationship to Lucy. I didn't bother to write my own opinion at the time because I was too preoccupied monitoring the tv media sites for news on all my shows, lol. So I think that I'm going to share my views here.

I'll start with Garcy.

Garcia Flynn and Lucy Preston were adversaries for most of season one and while we know how much Flynn valued Lucy -enough to take time nearly every episode to try recruiting her to his side- he still was her enemy and treated her as such. He held her hostage, choked and threw her out of his way, kidnapped her and was even going to let her disappear from time just to stop Rittenhouse. There may have been valid reasons within context for most that stuff but a reason is not an excuse. That's something I try to keep in mind with all my fandoms especially ones with morally ambiguous characters who make not-so-morally-ambiguous decisions. Flynn should be held responsible for his actions against Lucy even if there are explanations for those actions. The explanations do not erase what he has done but, well, explains it. 

So, I believe there is a validity to when someone says they can't or won't ship garcy because of those things. It's more than understandable to not want to forgive a character for doing those things to another character.

I believe Garcy is a good ship with a dark past. You don't forget what happened but you can still see the merit in them going forward. Season two has what the ship needed, and what Flynn wanted, from the start, Garcy working together to take down Rittenhouse. They are no longer physical or ideological adversaries. They are of one mindset and one mission, stop Rittenhouse and save their families. From this, we can finally see in depth the way in which Flynn cares for and respects Lucy. Before, it was all hidden underneath context, pleading eyes and soft voices while they had their one or two minutes alone with each other every episode. Now we can see Flynn actively be there with and for Lucy. He's where he needs to be, on the time teams side and the garcy ship is on a course correct.

Garcy may have had its bumps and bruises but Garcia Flynn has always held a great deal of respect and admiration for Lucy Preston. I'm sure it will only grow from here on out.

Finally, we have Lyatt.

This was the cute, if not obvious, ship that the show positioned to be Lucy's main ship. While I always enjoyed them and they do have a decent enough chemistry, I was never much of a head-over-heels in love with them shipper. I felt like Wyatt was still mentally and emotionally married to his wife and Lucy was just looking to escape the loneliness and isolation she felt as a time traveler by being with the only other single person she knew would understand her strange new job/life. Don't get me wrong, these two have a genuine affection for each other and that's more than clear. But I could never shake off the feeling that they got together because they only had each other in that situation. I mean, look at it this way, if Lucy met and got to know each other without the looming threat of Rittenhouse and time traveling danger that could kill them at any moment, would they still be Lyatt? Would they still have these, apparently, super strong feelings for each other after like 6 months of knowing each other? Or would they go on a few dates and then move on? Okay, I've fallen a bit off path but trust me this is going somewhere.

Lyatt started off as the cute unproblematic ship but season two sunk it in more ways than one. We knew from Wyatt's recollection of his marriage to Jessica in season one that he was not the best husband to her. He would get possessive and jealous and start arguments with her and was basically a jerk. It wasn't that noticeable at first because he was supposed to be the wounded soldier with regrets but you can see how those aspects of his character pop up from time to time. Season two just made them even more obvious. I spent half the season defending Wyatt while slowly falling out of love with his character. Episode 2x07 finally just killed my love altogether. Wyatt Logan has become the emotionally abusive ex boyfriend who makes everything about him and will guilt people into feeling sorry for him when he fucks up their life. 

Wyatt used both Jessica and Lucy this season. He used Lucy and became upset with her whenever she was not pinning over him, allowing him to take advantage of her personal space or when she stood up for herself against his behavior. He puts on a sad puppy dog face and bats his eyelashes while explaining how hard this is for him too. But the truth is Wyatt made every single decision, he called it off with Lucy, he begged Jessica for another chance, he brought her to the bunker, and he tried to keep Lucy close because it's what he wanted. He gave not a thought to what the other women wanted or were going through yet he wants to claim how hard it is for HIM when he's confronted with the truth. He's selfish and egotistical but in a way where you don't fully recognize it until you take a deeper look at him without the emotional baggage of liking the character weighing down on your thoughts and subconsciously blinding you to his faults. 

The truth is Wyatt doesn't deserve Lucy at this point and it doesn't matter if Jessica turns out to be a "villain" or not. She doesn't have powers of mind control. Wyatt made the first moves and Jessica reacted to them. The way his relationship turned sour with Lucy and the way he behaved is ALL on him. Getting rid of Jessica won't change any of that. Wyatt is not emotionally mature or stable enough to sustain a healthy relationship. This is literally his 2nd strike. First time was with original Jessica and now Lucy has been made a victim of his emotional manipulation. Wyatt needs to grow on his own from now on. Lucy can't be his "saviour" anymore because what is she really getting out of this? How can she trust someone who can be this thoughtless and inconsiderate of her feelings? Why does she need to heal someone else when she's in pain herself?

I can't see a happy future Lyatt if Wyatt's actions are brushed away with him saying "sorry" and Jessica being evil. He needs actual development and growth not a get out of jail free card.

So for me Garcy and Lyatt are mirror opposite of each other. Garcy started off as dark and problematic but has grown to be relatively healthy for both characters involved. Lyatt started off as cute and unproblematic but became emotionally unhealthy and detrimental to Lucy's stability and well-being. 

Ultimately, I ship Lucy with happiness and wouldn't mind if she was alone for awhile. I ship the other two with personal growth. But romantically I fall more towards Garcy because of how it's been played and where it can go from here. I don't think much of anything will change my mind about Wyatt unless he goes through extensive therapy or it's revealed that he was replaced by an evil doppelganger at one point.

According to the report, Piner is seen in the video first talking to Gilmore, who pulled his vehicle up next to him, and the two begin talking about the recent Black Lives Matter protests.

During the conversation, Piner tells Gilmore "the only thing this agency is concerned with is 'kneeling down with the Black folks,'" according to the report.

"Gilmore then said that he watched a video on social media about white people bowing down on their knees and 'worshipping Blacks,'" the report added.

Later in the video, after Gilmore leaves to respond to a call, Piner is seen receiving a phone call from Moore, and the two have a conversation about a recent arrest Moore had made of a Black woman.

Moore was also filmed calling one Black magistrate judge a "f---ing Negro," complaining how the judge had questioned his decision to arrest the Black woman in the first place instead of committing her to a mental institution, the report said.

According to the report, Piner then reflected on current tensions, saying: "We are just going to go out and start slaughtering them," Piner said at one point, using a racial slur. "I can't wait."

"Moore responded that he would not do that. Piner stated 'I'm ready,'" the report said.

"Officer Piner then explained to Cpl. Moore that he felt society needed a civil war to 'wipe 'em off the f---ing map. That'll put 'em back four or five generations.' Cpl. Moore responded 'you're crazy,'" the report said.

The video stopped a short time after.

Making excuses

The internal-affairs report also detailed how the trio defended themselves after they were asked about the video.

Gilmore, who was heard complaining about white people "worshipping Blacks," said he would have found a video of Black people bowing down to white people just as offensive.

"He stated that his problem with the video was the fact that the Bible states that 'thou shall not bow to any idol,'" the report said. "Gilmore stated that he always treats everyone fairly regardless of their race."

Moore defended himself by saying that he was off-duty when he made the call to Piner and was "just venting."

"He advised that the call combined with the situation with the recent protests had him extremely stressed and he is very embarrassed about the things he said in the video," the report said. "Cpl Moore stated that he doesn't normally speak like that but he was feeding off of officer Piner and just venting."

Piner also blamed his comments on the stress of the recent protests against police brutality, saying they had left him worried about the safety of his family.

"Piner stated that the conversations on the video were caused by the stress piling up from all of those factors," the report said. "He stated that the video was embarrassing to listen to." It also described him as saying that he was at a "breaking point," that the comments were "uncharacteristic of him," and that he was "out of control."

Possible criminal charges The internal-affairs investigation determined that Moore and Piner broke their standard of conduct by using inappropriate jokes and slurs and criticizing the department.

While the report found that Gilmore did not violate the standard of conduct, Williams, the Wilmington police chief, overruled and said it was clear he was in violation.

At the Wednesday press conference to announce the officers' firing, Williams said he would also report their behavior to the state standards commission and speak with the district attorney's office to discuss criminal charges.

"There are certain behaviors that one must have in order to be a police officer, and these three officers have demonstrated that they do not possess it," Williams said.

"When I first learned of these conversations, I was shocked, saddened, and disgusted. There is no place for this behavior in our agency or our city, and it will not be tolerated."

Captain Jeon crossed the street, maneuvering around people easily. It always seemed that even the most dense crowds, were parting for a man in uniform. He kept his head low, trying not to be even more noticeable than a uniformed officer who stood over a head taller than most of the people around him could be. But people still stopped and stared and followed them with their eyes to see where he was going. And once they saw that he was making a beeline to the roughed up man who stood just as tall as him with the same strong jaw and tired set to his eyes as he, their curiosity tapered a bit.

The captain had come to a stop directly in front of his little brother, but all the other man had done was slowly look up to meet his gaze. Then his tired expression was lowering to the captain’s left and right. “Where is she?” He asked softly, gaze cutting to the opposite side of the street in case you had somehow missed the light. His older brother rocked on his heels, slowly answering,

“She’s gone.”

Jungkook looked confused,“You let her go.” He corrected. Of course he had let her go. “Why would you leave her alone?”

“Why do you care?” He countered gently. “You questioned why you were still with her and now she’s gone. You didn’t go after her, I think that makes how you felt about her pretty clear.” Jungkook looked away, that was true. He had decided not to pursue and now you were truly gone; but that didn’t mean that he wasn’t going to miss you.

It was big city, if you really wanted to disappear, you could. Captain Jeon cleared his throat,“She told me she was forced into your group. You and your ‘family’ held an innocent woman against her will. That’s not right, Jungkook. How..how could you stand for something like that? How could you have said you loved her, but kept her against her will?”

“We all start out some way.” He mumbled,“She was traded for a ring. I was abandoned by our father. Tae was dropped off by his step mom. Jimin was tricked by a woman. Namjoon was convinced by a man he thought was like a brother to him. I think Jin was fed some lie that it was family thing. Yoongi was..I don’t know how he got in, but we all got in some way and once you’re in you can’t leave. I can’t leave and neither can she.” Tae may have said you weren’t family, but Jungkook had been with you. He had protected you and treated you like everyone else in the organization. He had fought with you and held you and cried with you.

You were his family.

You were part of the family.

The officer frowned deeply. “So what organization is she in? It can’t be yours if you just let her go and Min threatened her. She’s not with anyone, she’s just stuck.” He checked the streets, eyes skipping over the passing people. It was habit ingrained into him from the police academy, but he noticed that Jungkook did the same thing, eyes subtly scanning over anyone who walked too close to them.

Jungkook furrowed his brows,“I..I don’t know. Everyone else treated her like..they just treated her different, but I’ve always viewed her as one of us. She’s part of the family to me, I don’t understand why everyone else thinks differently.” Captain Jeon sighed softly.

“Is she..was she the first girl you’ve ever been with..?” Maybe that was why Jungkook saw no fault in how you had come to him. He was too attached to the fact that you were the first woman he had such an intimate relationship with.

Jungkook had frowned, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. Where was this line of questioning leading to? “No.” He deadpanned,“I’ve been with girls before her and after her. She’s not..she’s not different that way. Her and I never-”

“What’s special about her to you then?”

The younger of the two took a step back, face pinching,“Don’t you want me to leave her alone?” He growled,“Why are you trying to make me remember why I love her? That’s just going to make me go after her again.”

“You look so lost.” Captain Jeon whispered,“And since I first met you, after knowing that you were my family, she’s the only thing that’s brought a smile to your face.” He licked his lips,“Seeing the way you cradled her close when she was discharged..and the way you didn’t hold back with our dad when trying to get your visitation restored…” He shrugged, “And how troubled you looked when you couldn’t remember why you loved her.” Captain Jeon looked away, shaking his head,“You must’ve loved her so fiercely, so passionately and now it’s just gone..and you’re both so somber.”

Jungkook’s face pinched as if he was in pain, “She has Yoongi.”

Yoongi stared blankly at the cracking concrete wall. Blinking sedately, he felt an itch crawling up his throat, but ignored it, eyes tracing over the splintering edges of the crumbling wall. It had been over three days and although he had not tried to find out anything about your whereabouts, he was burning on the inside that you had not come back to see him.

Like he had told you to.

However, Captain Jeon had visited six times. Each time waving a new accusation in his face. Abduction, murder, assault, possession of illegal weapons, the works. All the bland accusations he was used to. Yoongi had only rubbed at his eyes tiredly, swiping the folders off the metal table and leaning closer to the officer.

“How’s your little brother? Still hiding Y/N under his belt?” He had murmured. The resemblance was immediate once Yoongi had stopped glaring at him. The officer was a burly, lighthearted replica of the broody little shit who thought he owned you. Yoongi could see that. Officer Jeon had bristled, eyes narrowing at the mention of Jungkook. He never would have thought Yoongi would ask about him, but the moment your name was hissed between clenched teeth, Captain Jeon understood.

Yoongi wanted to know about you.

“She’s free.”

At that, the mafia boss’s lips had snapped shut. He had leaned as far back as possible in his seat, handcuffed hands settled neatly and patiently in his lap. But the way he picked at his thumbnail told otherwise. That answer was something that he had never considered and it had put him on edge.

“Free?” Yoongi had echoed. The word tasted bitter on his tongue. You were as much a mafia member as himself or your brother. Members didn’t just become 'free’. There was a price to pay or there was something you had to take. The only apparent thing that stood between you and 'freedom’ was Jungkook. “Did she kill him?” He asked curiously. Captain Jeon had glared back at him, angered at the absurd answer.

“Do you really think I’d say that she was free if I knew she had killed Jungkook?”

Yoongi had shrugged, smirking at the officer, “You seem to have a soft spot for her.” He teased darkly, “After all, I’m pretty sure she’s the only suspect for the murder of one Park Jimin and yet..” He paused, “She’s free.”

“Technicali-”

“Mhm,” He cut in, nodding furiously. He had raised up his handcuffed wrists, nodding towards the opening door, “Technicality issues, happens all the time.” Yoongi chuckled, “Just like now.” Captain Jeon had swiveled in his chair, confusion twisting his features as two guards stepped in, keys jangling from one’s hands. They flanked Yoongi, one unlocking the cuffs as the other politely helped him stand. Yoongi was in for a life sentence, the Captain was personally making sure of this. What was happening? He waited for the guards to answer him, but they remained silent and stone faced.

Yoongi stood between them, the corners of his lips tilting up as he rubbed his wrists. The captain sure wasn’t expecting that, was he? But if the police captain could pull the technicality card and so could Jungkook, then there was no doubt Yoongi could find some leverage too. It was a good thing that the judge and lawyers overseeing his case had exquisite taste in the red light district of the city; which so happened to be up for grabs between organizations. One little call and mountains of photographic evidence were flooding Yoongi’s mailbox down in the mailroom.

“Wait, what’s going on?” The captain finally voiced. The two guards looked away from him, neither wanting to mention the little loophole that usually got an officer the outcome he wanted.

“Technicality, of course.” Yoongi replied. Nodding his head towards the doorway, Yoongi motioned of the man standing there, “Meet Jin…or Seokjin, I believe you know him as.”

Foot still wrapped tightly and settled into a boot, Jin stood silently, neatly pressed suit tapered snuggly. He looked almost exactly the same as when the captain had last seen him. The only thing missing was the shiny golden badge hooked onto his belt. Jin still had the soft look to his face that had confused the captain if the man had ever seen the inside walls of the police academy; but once the man had rattle off drill maneuvers, squad numbers, instructor names and even yearly senior pranks there was no doubt that the man had been in the academy at some point. That, and the way he seemed to know the ins and out of protocols and patrol routes. Then he had murmured the word 'undercover’ and that filled in all the obscurities that Captain Jeon had noticed about him. “Seokjin?”

“Looks familiar right? Your undercover friend? Works for me.” Yoongi grinned, “He’s also Y/N’s older brother.” It was then that Jin had smiled softly, eyes downcast. And the captain was reminded of the way you had look when Jungkook had gently whispered something to you. You and Jin did, in fact, look very similar. The entire part about working for Yoongi was what stumped him. Perhaps this was all a part of his cover? But Captain Jeon never remembered anything about freeing convicts for the sake of their cover. Wasn’t it when the bad guy was in jail that the undercover bit ended?

Was there a man higher than Min Yoongi who needed to be taken down?

Captain Jeon blinked, unsure of what else to do. He stared at him, waiting for Jin to give some sort of notion that what Yoongi was saying was false, but all Jin had done was nod at him. Yoongi, newly released, clapped his hands, rubbing them together as he leveled his gaze with the captain.

“So, does 'free’ have an address?”

The Lovely Unknown: Where I’m at in this season

In life there are things you just know, and there are things unknown. At this point in my life, I’m pretty much stuck in the unknown. Everything that I have to look forward to such as having a family, having a big girl job, and finding my person, are all in the shadows at this point.

When I think about what my life will look like in a year, I can’t even imagine a singular piece of information, other than still having my cat, best friends, and family. I hope to still be in school with decent grades, with a steady job hopefully. Looking forward I get kind of scared about whether or not I’m making the right choices now, so that my future self will be proud. At the same time I know that whatever happens, is what needs to happen in order for me to be the person I’m supposed to be. Even if I’m faced with challenges I know that they are given to me in order for me to grow and learn.

My freshman year of college was great academically, but I have definitely learned form a couple of setbacks and mistakes socially. With being apart of a campus ministry and becoming so involved I made many great friends, but this also is where the patterns of my past showed their ugly colors. 

Like I said I’ve made some great friends, but due to my patterns of befriending males older than me, there was soon guys who wanted to hangout with me more, and the eventually pursued me. With that being said long story short, one of them I totally friend zoned hardcore, and the other I allowed to get closer to me. This was where I went wrong. You probably can assume how this went. He hurt my heart by not being the person he made me think he was. In the end I had to get out of the situation as fast as I could, before I was in too deep, at that point I wasn’t quite trapped.

After ending things, that was a different story. For quite a while he and I got along quite well and we could coexist during our time at the campus ministry. This changed as soon as he had time to process the whole situation. He then went to one of my good friends asking her questions instead of coming to me. The result ended with him becoming quite hostile toward me, and in result I distanced myself and sought after peer counseling in order to deal with all the emotions I was working through. This was quite a difficult time for me to get through this while still having him around constantly trying to know what was going on in my head. It felt like psychological warfare, in which he would try his best to poke and pick through my thoughts and reactions. 

This time period stretched for quite sometime. During this time we both ended up going on a mission trip during our spring break. When I was forced to be around him for an entire week for 24/7 I couldn’t avoid him. His personality and the way he presented himself honestly enraged me at this point. I found myself avoiding him and being very short with him. This is where my good friend comes back into the picture. She was the middle man he went to to try to get into my head. As you you may have already guessed this caused some unrest between us. At some point I was so angry I was running around the chapel of the host church at full speed. This was a very low point for me, I just didn’t understand how he could force me to be this angry person that I’ve never been.

By the middle of the week, he was tired of me pretending he wasn’t a problem while still reacting to the hostility he was showing not only me but others as well. His true personality showed it’s ugly head when we played games after a long day of work. He was yelling and getting very mean to everyone playing when he wasn’t doing well or someone corrected him when he didn’t play correctly. The way he was to smug and condescending that I walked away and like I mentioned before I ran out the anger. It was not a good time and everyone could tell that I was not doing okay at this point and they knew exactly why. I was the only person to call him out for being a huge prick to everyone and they all saw that he didn’t care to change his behavior.

So I’m just going to wrap this up and say that he then took it upon himself to try to pull me to the side like a child and talk with me on his terms. This was a very bad idea because it ended with him telling me in a demanding tone to “go to bed” when I told him that I wouldn’t tell him every thought in my head. He also said that I was a liar and that I was deceptive because I told him it was not entitled to know what my thoughts and feeling were. At his point he was getting very possessive over me and was still confiding in my friend who told me everything he told her (yeah she would tell me in detail everything he said about me what a gal, then again she liked to stir the pot and feel him little bits of information that I have told her, not cool, very not cool).

Anyways he is no good and I finally ended up telling the director of the campus ministry after he had pulled me aside like a child on a second occasion, ranted to my friend about me at 4 am after he realized I was ignoring him at an event when I was trying to get school work done, and the final straw was when he left flowers and a note at my doorstep trying to bring up all of the issues I though I had already addressed, but he wanted to feel in control of the situation. Turns out the way he was treating me was reflective of the reason why he was already on probation, and in weekly advisement with the director. In the end he was asked to not return and not to contact me or any of my friends. He’s probably pissed, but that’s no longer my problem.

I’m in a new chapter of my life now. This summer of transition is scary, and I’m worried that I might fall back into my mistakes of freshman year all over again. At this point my guard and standards are as high as the stars. This is very difficult for me to move on and grow withing myself. I’ve been through the stages of doing nothing but sleeping, then I moved to long baths, then I moved to not eating or leaving my room. I went to work less until I finally just didn’t go for the last few work days. I worry about that a lot, the fact hat I never said a final goodbye to my co-workers at the elementary school I helped at.

At this point I am into more of a productive schedule, and I have watching children to thank for that. When I spend time with kids I forget all the things happening in my life and I just worry about what they need from me. In addition, it forces me to eat when they do resulting in me actually eating food. The only issues I’m finding difficult to work through are my sleep schedule and the way I deal with the idea of dating.

I don’t sleep until I physically hurt from exhaustion. I spend long nights trying to distract myself into being tired. Sometimes I interact and message other people but I end up just falling into my own world where nothing else matters but me. This is where it gets difficult, because I find comfort in being the only one awake and it’s peaceful for me. Ever since I was young I was a moon child, staying awake until odd hours just for the sake of it. I would clean, hangout with my dad, or just lay there in my naive thoughts. Now this time is tainted by regret, pain, and the realities of life.

Life isn’t so simple. I’m constantly in a state of exhaustion trying to keep myself busy and afloat. I’m suspended in the center, levitating over the state of depression and sadness, but still reaching up to grasp contentment and happiness. This leaves me in the state of a wandering traveler, always moving around trying to find myself. Trying to find something that I know I can only find in myself but I never quite remember it in the moments I try to fill the void.

My void is not hollow, but its simply soft and pliable. When something promising comes along I squish it against my heart and hope it doesn’t bounce back. I try so hard to give things a chance, to prove they can fit. The only thing that can fit at the moment is my faith in God. I know he’s there but sometimes the room that I leave for him isn’t completely filled by my heart for him.

It’s pretty depressing that I never really feel him anymore. I know he’s there, but just allowing me to learn and grow in my season of distress. In this time I know I must be patient and wait, but also I feel like I’m going to miss my chance at opportunities in life. That’s why I try my best to cram things against my heart, so I don’t miss the one piece of the puzzle that actually fits. That’s what terrifies me, missing something important whether that be an exit on the highway, a career opportunity, an experience, or even a person.

The unknown is that in between. You know everything you don’t have, or don’t feel, but you can’t figure out what it is that you’re truly missing to level up to a new season of life. I so desperately want to find a cheat code, or a get out of jail free card. I trust the process but the unknown terrifies every bone in my body beyond anything I’ve ever imagined.

A Drive To Survive.

The questions I had pondered my entire life were “can I really be happy?” and “will I ever be able to live in my own skin?” I marveled at such questions since I was a little girl up until the ripe age of 21. More than ever there was a need to be like the average child, the average cocky teenage girl, or even the average temperate drug user. The ingredients of being sober included severe consequences of not getting what I wanted in the moment and more importantly, waking up in the morning to handle life on life’s terms. From hiding under a bed dreading about going to school, to living on the streets of Sepulveda in clothes I hadn’t washed in two weeks, there was one thing in common: I could not face reality. The delusional state of just stagnantly breathing became surviving daily life with grace, dignity, and honesty. Today, my drive to survive consists of what I went through, what changed during the process, and what my life looks like as of now.

             I remember my innocent age of 13 years old before I had any illegal drugs in my system. As I sit here and reminisce on the past, I wish I took childhood more seriously. My grandparents and my mother raised me in a big house. I attended private school and I always had food on the table. We even had a Golden Retriever named Shadow. From doctors to ADD testing facilities, I grew up with the mindset that a pill could fix anything. By the age of fourteen, I was on almost every prescription medicine for ADD, ADHD, and depression including Adderall, Vyvance, Zolft, and Prozac. Despite the pleasing hand I was dealt, I couldn’t see past the fear and frustration of being a shy “no one”. When I attended middle and high school, I was bullied quite a bit for being the weird ugly girl with a shy personality and oversized clothes. My fearfulness led me to a deep resolution to not eat in front of people. The reason of starvation stemmed from being overly self-conscious with a self-esteem that was purely nonexistent. The fear manifested and the unrealistic expectations of how I felt others should act etched a carving that splintered into the skin of who came into contact with me. The twisted perception I had at that age led to the predestined solution and destruction of drugs and alcohol.

 When I turned 15 years old, marijuana was discovered. Weed went from a fun and alleviating drug to a dependence that ultimately started me down a long road of desperation. Weed was accepted in my family, but if only they knew where this simple recreational drug would take me. After inhaling the mesmerizing smoke, I wanted to meet the man with the miraculous plant. I made it a goal to try to take some home with me and soon after that I was smoking and selling large quantities of green. Nothing else in life was important until I physically had the plant in my possession. Eventually marijuana stopped treating my disease and I needed something much more potent. I was introduced to a 27 year old man one night through Facebook and the last thing I expected doing was getting introduced to heroin. At first he didn’t want me know he was an addict. He hid it from me, but when I saw his eyes watering and him sneezing and slipping into the night to hunt for the dealers, I knew there was something drastically wrong. I could smell the odor of burning tar slip through his clothes and soon enough I was standing up trying not to collapse. I married heroin that night and we stayed together for four years.

           I was now 20 years old and the drugs had led me to a point of being spiritually, emotionally and physically broken. The consistent need for something was getting old and I was exhausted. Every single morning I would have to pick up a straw and smoke dope until I was well enough to pick myself out of bed. The bathroom was next as I needed to throw up from the stomach bile that collected in my belly from the night before. My brain felt like it was deteriorating. I started having emotional outbursts with those around me when I didn’t get my way or my money or my drugs. I was still living at home at the time. My mother and grandparents did not want to kick me out because they thought they could prevent an overdose if I stayed at home; however, this still had a place in the earth to plant me if an accident did happen. Those around me were turned off by my negative behavior and I was quickly losing all those who cared about me. After a while I started getting sick of being sick and tired, but the drug use did not stop.

 I never thought I would end up in jail but shortly enough, I did. After my first night in jail, anything was believable. I had gone off the deep end and I couldn’t wait to get out so I could get high yet, once again. Van Nuys Jail was freezing, smelly, and stale. The deputies always burned the food in the microwave and the beds were as hard as stone. The women were quite inspiring especially the one young girl I met. She had cut her husband up with an ax. She ended up giving me her shirt to keep me warm while I was kicking heroin. I can recall kicking the metal bunk beds as hard as I could at 4 am in the morning, praying to a God I didn’t know existed. After six days I was released and I went back to the only love I knew, my dope.

             As soon as I finally got kicked out of my house after multiple threats to stop, Sepulveda Boulevard was not far from where I lived. The Boulevard was corrupted with a false assumption of security and people who sold drugs. I was motivated to go to any length to get my dope. I can vaguely recall driving around scary men for drugs. I would rotate from living in my car and waking up in cockroach ridden motel rooms. I even awoke one night to realize my social security card and license were stolen.
