TRAMP ▶ TYLER DECKER
( FAIRY TAILS BARTENDER ● 35 ● SEBASTIAN STAN ● TAKEN )
Ryan Decker’s girlfriend left him when their son was six months old. He hadn’t wanted the kid but a near-miss incident on the steps seemed to trigger something paternal in him and, soon he was doing everything to provide a better life for Tyler.. Ryan only had his GED but began taking odd jobs around town: he was seen as a good man, a hard worker and a dedicated father.
Tyler considered his pa his best friends growing up but when he started school, his dad picked up more jobs and they grew apart. Ryan was trying to save money for Tyler’s college fund and Tyler was busy falling in with the wrong crowds. He’d get in trouble daily, detentions and suspensions becoming commonplace. Grades were abysmal aside from art and the only reason he was decent at that was because there were no rules. But even that talent fell to the wayside once partying took over. It broke his father’s heart that he barely scraped by in high school and was rejected by every college he’d lazily applied to.
Without prospects, he got various jobs around town, scraping by. Still frequenting parties, he met a guy, Mike, and what began as a casual fling soon turned into a relationship for a year. Tyler loved him but everything changed five years ago, when Mike got behind the wheel, intoxicated, and Tyler was too drunk to do anything about it. They t-boned an elderly couple’s car. He was sent flying and Mike was, unfairly, unscathed aside from cuts and a concussion. He left the scene of the crime and high tailed it out of town, too scared to call the police because he’d been behind the wheel at the time.
Tyler was in the hospital for months with two broken legs, broken ribs, a punctured lung and severe head trauma. They had him in a coma for weeks, his father beside him the entire time. He didn’t believe when they said Mike skipped town, nor the fact that the elderly couple they’d hit had died and until they could prove otherwise, he was the prime suspect who’d get charged. Eventually, this was dropped when an eyewitness and CCTV showed Mike leaving the scene. It fucked Tyler up. He’d love him and he’d left him for dead. His recovery wasn’t easy but months later, Tyler could walk again. His dad had lost two jobs taking care of him in the hospital, so he knew he had to do something to make sure his dad wasn’t dipping into what little retirement he had. One of the only places that actually looked at his lackluster resume was Fairy Tails, where he’s been bartending since.
CONNECTIONS ▶
SIMON CHURCH – His boss and one of the only people who had heard about the events associated with his name, and who saw his barely-there resume, and still hired him. He started by giving Tyler the shitty shifts until he worked his way up to being a decent enough bartender to cover the high-traffic times. Tyler doesn’t really talk to him much but he’s been in enough rough crowds to know that Simon Church is not someone you disappoint.
CORDELIA DU PONT – The nurse who refused to let him mope around and encouraged him daily for months as he was recovering. They’ve become best friends in the years since and in that time she’s been a terrible wingman but an ardent supporter. When his dad died, she was at the funeral with him. She’s the one who encourages him to work towards something, not just work to get by, and even pulled strings to help him get into Grimmbrook University’s art program at. He’s started taking classes here and there, but doesn’t have the heart to tell her that he’s not sure he can do it. He doesn’t want to let her down like he let his dad down so many times, but thinks he might.
ARIELA LOPEZ – Ariela is the friend he turns to when he needs to let loose. She's always known how to have a good time. He may not party as hard as he did before his accident, but Tyler still knows how to enjoy himself. Ariela was also the eyewitness who placed Mike at the accident. When she heard that Tyler might get charged, she sent in an anonymous tip and that tip was corroborated by video footage. Tyler doesn’t know any of this but Mike has also always been a strictly off-limits subject since the accident.
ALEXANDER YAO – The guy annoys the shit out of Tyler. He walks around like he’s Mother Teresa, saving all the poor souls in Grimmbrook from their terrible, pointless lives. He always tries to make conversation with Tyler when he sees him at the University. That alone is enough to make him want to drop out altogether. There’s something about someone who has their shit together like Alexander does, that pisses him off a bit. He acts like he’s some great hero and all his accomplishments are his own, seemingly owing nothing to the fact that he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He wouldn’t be half the man he thinks he is had it not been for a good start in life. Just hearing Alexander’s name makes him bristle and roll his eyes.
DANIEL MICKEY –  The asshole he found out tried to take a blood sample while he was unconscious in the ER. He’d never been one for authority figures, but this guy takes the cake. Tyler can’t help but make snide remarks whenever he comes in contact with the detective and it's not like he’s Daniel’s favorite person either. If it wasn't for the fact that Daniel could throw his ass in jail, and that assaulting civilians was never encouraged behavior for law enforcement, the two would certainly come to blows. If their verbal sparring were physical, it would be a bloodbath.

NCAA WILL NOT Limit Student-Athletes
NCAA Athletes are Now Allowed to Make Money Off of Their Name, Image, & Likeness! But wait there’s a catch...
"The NCAA’s release said the new rules will, however, allow student-athletes to reference their sport and school and will call on NCAA members to use school compliance officers to oversee the types of endorsement deals and value of individual contracts to ensure fair value for the services provided. While the recommendations outline the ways athletes can make money, they also leave room for discretion at the NCAA and school level. NCAA staff will also aid with oversight."
This is a great next step for the NCAA (finally) in providing some sort of value for student-athletes while also making us realize at the end of the day that we should have had ownership of our name and likeness this entire time. NCAA mandates that the university's name or logo will not be used or allowed in such endorsements. Still, the NCAA is an organization that restricts their athletes tremendously!
Example: I'm currently working with Eastbay in an athletic campaign, #NeverNotAnAthlete for hard times during the pandemic. If I was still at Villanova, I would not be allowed to show my own school's logo, mascot, or name in the campaign or content produced. This simply goes down to wearing a shirt, bracelet, or even saying “My name is Adrianna Hahn and I go to Villanova University.” Yes, this all sounds moronic, doesn’t it? Imagine you work for the Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania, Marketing Director for Nike, Designer for Louis Vuitton, Adidas Social Media Manager, Basketball Coach for Villanova University, etc. and you couldn’t share your own job title to the rest of the world. You put your blood, sweat, and tears into something every day to just being compliant with unnecessary and selfish rules.
Not only does it sound idiotic to have to keep secret where you go to school, but the NCAA also states that compliance members OVERSEE the deals/ contracts being offered to student-athletes. We all might as well go home and never talk about this again. If you never played a D1 college sport, you might not be aware of this, but compliance office members might be more intense than the actual police enforcement on your campus. It is their job to find out what is wrong or illegal in a situation, and if there is none, most likely one will be created. This isn’t to knock down schools or compliance members, this is just my own experience and you can either deem it credible enough or not. That is based on individual reader’s preferences. I will now give the best advice to current student-athletes during these times: DO NOT TELL YOUR COMPLIANCE MEMBERS, TEAM MEMBERS, OR COACHES ABOUT ANY OF THE DEALS/ ENDORSEMENTS YOU ARE RECEIVING!
I hope your still reading. Yes, I said that. Not only is it important to keep your business deals personal and in the dark, but the less voices and hands on, the better outcome for you! At the end of the day, whether we want to admit it or not, a college experience depends on how that individual prepares and handles his/her obstacles and everyday situations. In all reality, a student-athlete should have a countdown for their last days on campus, because once they leave, they’re going to wish that they never told anyone about all their potential business opportunities. And yes, these are tremendous business opportunities. Let’s not allow the NCAA to limit these business deals and call it “making money off your name and likeness.” Shit doesn’t make sense, it’s not about how many people like me or my name. A company sees value and profit in me and not all humans can just get paid off of their name and status. So, in a sense, athletes do not be afraid of the NCAA, they need us. They live off of us, so demand every right and lets just be aware of how they are representing their own athletes in the media.
Let’s really break this down here. Because I feel like those who do not know me might read me the wrong way. I love Villanova and my school, so I am only referencing them for this story as an example, so please don’t make me see comments or have to hear unnecessary stories about me that are false. When I was 19 years old, a sophomore in college, my Instagram profile and basketball modeling pictures had gone viral. Of course, I was wearing a Villanova jersey, but it was not Villanova that gave me this large audience or viral platform. I created this by creating my own content, building my own name, figuring out my own social media marketing tactics, etc. Now you may say, “Oh, well you were wearing that Villanova jersey and that gave you some attention.” Yes, I am not discrediting my lovely university and their ability to attract on a mass global scale, but it was me at the end of the day. I created a brand for myself, and I know that this would have happened no matter where I went to school. I had value, I continue to bring value, and I will forever try to share that special value to the rest of the world. If I didn’t create a 100k audience, would we even be having this conversation right now? Probably not. It would be completely unfair for the NCAA to try and take ownership of something they DID NOT CREATE. Let’s take me out of the picture. The NCAA did not create Kris Jenkins or the National Championship game-winning shot. The NCAA did not create Zion Williamson, his explosive unnatural dunks while breaking a Nike shoe. The NCAA did not create DeShaun Watson, Sabrina Ionescu, Jay Bilas, Tua Tagovailoa, Tim Tebow, etc. If I keep going it’s going to make me sick understanding how valuable these players are but knowing how extremely limited they were within their own talents, skills, and making of who they are and became.
As a little girl, it was my dream to be the best WNBA player, have a fan base, be in the media and TV, and to be the person that everybody strived to be. I wanted to influence those younger than me and show those before me who was really boss. Yes, I wanted to be the boss. I always wanted to show people the real value I had, which to this day I know will go very far. When I created my social media platforms, I was impressed myself just with the numbers and how fast things were moving. I was impressed with how much opportunity I saw come my way with just the simplicity of posting great content and “selling” an amazing product. When this was all happening, it was not everybody’s dream to have a strong social media audience. People looked at me with disgust, like almost how could you sell yourself to the world like that. How could you possibly become somewhat famous or even more recognizable than your own school? Now, people get it. Everybody is foaming at the mouth for Instagram followers, but that’s for another day. What I’m trying to say is I finally created this special niche that I wanted all along, and once I got it, I was told to shut it down and find something else.
So, I went and became a server. Yes, I became a waitress. The same starting point guard, Big East record holder, Villanova star was a breakfast server at a local restaurant. Now, I didn’t serve because I needed money, I wasn’t broke. This doesn’t matter because all college kids, whether your parents are rich and will just GIVE you money, should feel the need to make your own money or make a living for yourself. I knew I needed to do something I never did before, like go into the workforce, and become a server, something I never thought I would ever be. When my friends found out I started working at pretty much the local breakfast joint, it was almost like this new comedy movie came out. Everybody wanted to see me in a uniform, cleaning tables, carrying food like I was circus animal. None of this bothered me because in all reality, I was one of the best players in the league, doing what I felt was right and worthy of my time. Everything I had assumed about serving or working in the restaurant industry smacked me in the face. For all those people who never worked in a restaurant, do you know how hard it is to confidently walk up to a table and be prepared for any and all concerns? I used to have rude people, who obviously never went out their isolated communities, scream at my face or flat out disrespect me, just assuming I was some washed up server that made no money or had no career. Mind you I’m also working and going to school in one of the richest areas in the world, yes, I said the world, look it up. When those same people found out I went to Villanova, or I was associated with basketball, or not only was associated but was the starting point guard, I started making more tips because I went to Villanova and played basketball there rather than just being a good server, which I most definitely was.
I made sure that these same people who disrespected me knew that they came in contact with the wrong one. BUT, it wasn’t until serving where I learned how to stick up for myself, or be able to have these conversations and not be shut down. Not only did serving help me develop necessary life skills, but it was an activity that I created and made for myself, similar to my Instagram experience. All of my teammates had the same schedule, but I made the decision to put more time into getting a job, even when I played every minute of every game. That’s when I realized it wasn’t necessarily about all of the opportunities I had in front of me, but how I was going to create more opportunities from the ones I was currently in. Nobody told me I had to go get a serving job. I did it for myself. Nobody told me I had to get 100k followers on Instagram, but I did it for myself. When people do not live those same experiences as you or have the same mindset as you, you will either come across two things: having to fight for yourself and continue to do what’s best for you, or lower yourself under what other people are saying just for them to control your endeavors stemming from their own insecurities and uncomfortableness. (If you are confused by this statement, trust me I can break it down for you)
When I talk about making college your own journey and creating those opportunities for yourself, this modern issue will only pertain to you if you allow it. Even though I was successful and still broke many paths and outlets for myself, I still allowed what other people said and did to affect me. And like I said previously, I have never met an official or working member from the NCAA in my entire four years, and I know a shit ton of other athletes that said the same. You create your own opportunities, but you can also limit your own opportunities as well. Even though I went out and created those opportunities for myself, even ones I was unfamiliar with, I still was limiting my full potential and I didn’t even realize it in the moment. At the end of the day, you will leave your university, you will not be controlled by the NCAA, and to be completely honest, I don’t think we ever really were. It is significantly crucial for a student-athlete to know and understand exactly what value they will bring to the world once they leave their school. For me, I was extremely lost because I allowed others to remove me and strip me of my own value. We have just been allowing this over-arching organization to control our mindsets and activities. Trust me, keep your business private, do not be fearful of higher authority or “rules,” and if you find value in an opportunity you better never hesitate or limit yourself.
Think about it. In college, student-athletes should never feel limited, we only have so much power. NCAA LIVES OFF OF CONTROLLING OTHER BUSINESS’ PROFITS! What the hell kind of budget is the NCAA going to take from me in order to receive their 10% earning? $100 if I make $1000 on a social media or product campaign, the NCAA must track me down and all my business opportunities so they profit as well! Even Zion Williamson or Kris Jenkins memorable sports moments that might bring in millions of dollars for these kids, LET THESE KIDS HAVE THE MONEY. It’s almost like multimillionaires owning sports teams and supporting their business for the sole purpose of making money, but these same people publicly announce proactive racism and will completely shit on their true “money makers,” not even understanding at the end of the day who brings in that real money. (Yes, I said it)
Now those in the audience might be saying, “Oh, well if it wasn’t for schools or the NCAA, these student-athletes wouldn’t be going to school for free or getting their degree for free. They are so selfish that not only do they get free schooling but they also want to be paid!” Yes, Yes we do. And for those who are thinking this, stop assuming now. Athletes are in major debt all the way up until college, and for those athletes who don’t make it to college or don’t have a successful college career, that debt might not ever get repaid. I hope we aren’t confused with the usage of debt here. In this case, let’s just say the average athlete starts at 8 years old, plays sports until 18 when they go to college and will then be financially provided by the university. For those athletes like myself that were fortunate enough to have parents to be able to financially provide their children to play sports (remember this is not everyone), that is about 10 years parents are paying for sports. Each year, let’s just say with school basketball and summer league/ AAU, parents total per year is about $10,000, and I’m just being nice right now. Calculating that up, it is at least $100,000 for a child to play a sport well enough to get a full D1 scholarship, and I’m only talking about playing 1 sport. Where is the NCAA now? Where is their influence or guidance during this process? Where are they pretty much your entire life? Nowhere.
How long will it take for a family or student-athlete to get that money back? It is an investment that not everybody just takes or sees beneficial. Not only are parents in debt for sports activities, but they are also paying what every other parent is paying as well. Not only was this a financial necessity, but do you know how much time and dedication was made by the entire family for this one child to go to school? It is a family sacrifice. So, for those who just complain and make comments when they were never in our shoes don’t really need to be heard right now. Especially when if we broke it down, the numbers will not ever add up, so let’s not compare when the numbers don’t, that’s just facts. If you disagree, you can either stop reading or continue. Not only is it essential that these kids get the money they deserve in order to make a living in life, but we fucking need it! We want it and we deserve it, just like anybody would demand profit or income for something that required hard work, talent, and way too much time. As athletes, we are made and built to be the best, to become the best versions of ourselves. No, it is not just about the money, but I’d be damned if I have an opportunity that I myself created and the NCAA simply tells me no. But guess what? It’s too late for me.
To all my student-athletes, keep your business to yourself and you will strive. Save the money you secretly make from business/ companies, it is so easy nowadays to save and invest. If somebody from your school’s compliance or of higher authority makes you do something or says you have to do this, 99% you most likely don’t so add me on LinkedIn and ask me questions if you feel stuck or don’t know what to do. It is now the time to tackle and create numerous opportunities for yourself, but no one will do it for you, but remember that when others get in the way, or you come across distractions. There is not a right or wrong way to do things, just as long as you build true character, have respect, and influence/teach those after you. It is not weird for a student-athlete to go get a real job midseason, even when they are the best on their team, it isn’t weird or abnormal to have 100k followers on Instagram, and it for sure isn’t wrong to create business opportunities for yourself while playing a sport in college. Do not be afraid of the NCAA, and do not allow such an organization to control your brand. When you leave college with a completed degree, the world is yours. Everything is competitive, everyone is envious, and in all reality, everyone is chasing the same things, but not everyone is working the same, or envisioning it the same way. If you see it, go get it. If you have it, make something of it. Never feel limited and for all my student-athletes, keep business to yourself and do not fear an invisible “threat.”
For all those who are reading this, parent, athlete, child, grandparent, coach, fan, etc. PLEASE do not look at me as the demon. I am doing what is right and standing for what should be granted. I was a student-athlete that played at a very high level, so not only do I understand competitiveness, success, dreams, etc., but I know how to handle adversity, overcome fear/challenge/ doubt, and I know how to find myself throughout this entire process. Business is real my friends, and everybody is chasing it. No matter how you create business for yourself, do not allow someone or something else to tell you what you have to do with it. Most of the people you will encounter never experienced such business deals or opportunities for themselves so understand their experiences as well and truly dive into a person’s mind. Do people around me want the best for me? Do these people want to see my full potential? Do these people want me to be successful in my next life journey? Realize that you are a product, and yes I say this with full value. Turn yourself into a product where others find you useful. What value can I bring that others can’t? What value/ form of impression can I give to a coach, boss, CEO, etc. where they want me over them? All of this starts in college, and yes it starts from the small business deals on Instagram, or brand ambassador discount code for a product, or national championship buzzer beater shot. I did that, we did that. Don’t forget this when opportunities present themselves my unreserved student-athletes, you created this for yourself, not them, so do what you want with it.
At the end of the day, if you think it’s wrong or hurtful to someone don’t do it. Other than that, go for the fucking world; it’s literally at the palm of your hands…

Studying gone wrong
Author: @lettersofwrittencollective Pairing: Isaac Lahey x Reader
Word Count: 1295
Warnings: None
Prompt: This request may seem kind of odd, but I'm sending it in anyway. It's a one-shot taking place in an alternate universe where everyone's human and there's no supernatural creatures in Beacon Hills or anywhere else in the world. It has nothing to do with the show’s plot. It's a Scooby-Doo AU one-shot. For that reason, the characters will probably be a little out of character. The pairing is Isaac/female reader. There are no other pairings. The reader and Isaac are dating. The relationships between Isaac, the reader, and the other characters are purely platonic. They're friends. Isaac, the reader, Lydia, Scott, and Stiles are the members of Mystery Incorporated, a group of famous detectives who solve mysteries and unmask fake monsters. Isaac is basically the Fred of the one-shot. He's the leader and trap maker. The reader is basically the Daphne of the one-shot. She's the danger prone damsel in distress. Lydia is basically the Velma of the one-shot. She's the genius who deciphers the clues. Scott is basically the Shaggy of the one-shot. He's a food obsessed coward. He serves as bait for Isaac's traps along with Stiles, his best friend. Stiles is basically the human version of Scooby. He's a cowardly but loveable goofball. He's the comic relief. The characters drive around in the Mystery Machine (the same van Fred drives in the Scooby-Doo cartoons). The van belongs to Isaac. He refuses to let anyone else drive it. The characters are teenagers. They live in the town of Beacon Hills, California and are students at Beacon Hills High School. Could you include a scene of them at the school doing homework or something like that at some point? I'd like everyone to know that they're high school students. Could you also include a cute fluffy scene of the reader and Isaac alone together and on a date? I don't want the one-shot to be just about the characters solving mysteries. I feel that could get repetitive. Know what I mean? There's no drinking or drug use or anything like that in the one-shot. The characters don't go to a party at in any point in the one-shot. Parties aren't mentioned in the one-shot. Swearing is allowed, and kissing is allowed, but please no smut.
A/N: Ok full disclaimer, I don’t even remember the last time that I actually watched Scooby Doo.  Anyways thank you so much to @biles-bilinski-24 for sending this over to me and allowing me to give this challenge a shot.  Let me know what you think!

You’re not sure what to think about the fact Isaac had convinced the whole gang to get together for a study group. It seems like, lately, that’s all that you do. Sure, the SAT’s are coming up and everyone wants to get into a good college, but does that mean you have to spend every single free moment studying?
You’re annoyed that the gang agreed to it, though you are not surprised. So here you are, sitting at Lydia’s house and everyone’s working through some subject or another. You, personally, are trying to work on math. Lydia has made it her mission to help you with this and is going over notes with you to try and teach you.
Isaac was working with Scott and Stiles when, suddenly, you heard Stiles gasp.
The whole gang turns to Stiles and he’s white as a sheet, staring at his phone.
“Stiles?”
“Like - what happened man?”
Stiles merely shakes his head and stares at his phone. Isaac makes his way over to Stiles and slowly takes the phone from his hand. Stiles doesn’t react, seemingly in shock.
Looking at the phone he had just taken from Stiles, Isaac’s face furrowed in confusion before he suddenly lit up.
Crap.
“Guys, we’ve got a case to solve!”
Stiles and Scott both let out a groan while you clapped your hands and Lydia sighed, gathering the books and papers on her table to put away.
The group spent some time arguing back and forth in regards to actually doing anything about the text that Stiles’ dad had sent. Apparently, the bank managers at Beacon Hills First National Bank had come in this morning to discover that the they had been robbed. After reviewing the security tapes, the Sheriff had discovered that some kind of masked monster was caught on video, robbing the place.
The Sheriff wasn’t too happy in asking your friends for help but you had helped solved multiple crimes before and so he thought that you may be interested in helping out with this one as well.
Scott and Stiles, as usual, did not want to get involved with whatever it was that was going on. Isaac, of course, convinced them that it was best to help out. Though it wasn’t very difficult once he promised them food in order to get what he wanted done.
Though, it was agreed that you would wait for the cops to finish their preliminary search before going out to actually check it out. Pizzas are ordered and everyone forgets their studying as they discuss what it is that can be done to capture this bad guy.
Isaac has decided to set up a trap for the man and now he and Lydia were trying to figure out the best way to set this up. Stiles and Scott are devouring the pizzas and whatever other food is in Lydia's house.  You, you’re trying to figure out the best way to help. You hate to admit it but usually, you get caught in one of Isaac's traps and you don’t want that to happen this time.
Later that night, the group of you make your way to the bank. Isaac tells you all the plan and you each make your way to different areas of the bank. Scott and Stiles stick with Lydia as the two of them are shaking in their boots and Lydia is their “support.” You go with Isaac towards the back vault.
Coming to a door, Isaac opens it and you both head inside.
“Isaac, isn’t this where they usually check in all the people trying to get in to the vaults?”
“Hey, you’re right. That’s exactly what this room is.” Isaac walks to the desk closest to the two of you and is searching for something when suddenly, the sound of a piano being played comes over the PA system. Sharing a confused look, the both of you make your way back to the entrance hall where you run into Scott, Stiles and Lydia.
“Like.. does anyone know where that sounds coming from?” Scott asks as his eyes are darting around the room, trying to find a source. Stiles is shaking his head and looks like he wants to bolt out of the room.
The gang turns and sees a person who’s bald with pointed ears. The mouth looks like it has been sewn shut and their eyes are a bright, piercing white. Their skin is almost transparent, the blue of their veins obvious against their skin. Their clothing is torn and it looks like one of their legs is covered in blood.
You all turn to look at each other and then the group scatters in different directions.  You went to follow Isaac but Lydia pulled you and you ran with her. The two of you made your way outside but didn’t see the boys or the van before the ugly creature was following you. An angry shriek left it’s lip and you looked at Lydia who looked at you. The two of you decided to run in opposite directions.
You ran around the building and found a service entrance that was unlocked. Pulling the door open, you ran into the building but found yourself in ropes suddenly.  Freaking out, you started to struggle against the ropes and did not notice as they got tighter until you could barely move.
“Y/N!’ you heard Isaac yell. Turning your head, you saw him running toward you through the door at the other end. You whimpered slightly and when he reached you, it took him a moment but he was able to quickly get you out of of the ropes.\
“Did I mess up the trap?”
He smiled at you before kissing your forehead. “There’s a second one. Don’t worry about it.”
You blushed because that meant you had messed up this one and hoped that the creep would get caught in the second trap. Isaac led you further into the building and you heard a loud cheering that sounded a lot like Stiles and Scott. Giving Isaac a look of confusion, the two of you made your ways to the opposite side of the building.
The two of you came into a room and saw that the masked creep was wrapped up in some ropes, much the same way you had been. Scott and Stiles were congratulating each other and Lydia was studying the man.
“Wait a minute!” she said and walked up the man, pulling off his mask.
“Jackson!”
The lacrosse player merely glared at you and your friends. He looked like he really wanted to be upset with where he was. Not that you could blame him, if you’d been caught robbing a bank you would probably be upset as well.
“But - like- why are you robbing a bank?” Isaac asked, confusion evident in his voice.
Lydia was the one that answered. Apparently, some of the investments that Jackson’s parents had made backfired and they were now basically broke. So Jackson was trying to find a way to make sure that they had at least some kind of money.
After the police came, the whole gang headed back to Lydia's house. Deciding to let the night be a bit less stressful, everyone decided on having a movie night. Scott and Stiles made a run to the store for more snacks, because of course. Meanwhile, you, Isaac, and Lydia helped her rearrange the living room so that everyone could sprawl out in their favorite ways.
When the boys got back from the store, you all settled down to watch Avatar. Isaac pulled you onto the couch with him and wrapped an arm around your shoulder. Resting your head on his shoulder, you watched the cartoon with your friends.

How John Dos Passos Left the Left
The reputations of the writers who transformed literature during the Jazz Age, the so-called “Lost Generation,” have undergone some interesting up and downs. Theodore Dreiser and Sinclair Lewis have largely disappeared from the canon. Dreiser’s sludge-like prose doomed him among readers over the last half century, while Lewis, who achieved fame in the ‘20s, becoming the first American to win a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1930, has seen his reputation sag. None of his indictments of middle-class America have found an audience today. Good luck trying to get a class of college sophomores to read Main Street. His last real success, It Can’t Happen Here (1937), had a brief revival with the election of Donald Trump. But no one reads Babbitt or Elmer Gantry anymore.
Hemingway’s name remains popular, though it is doubtful whether any of his novels are read today, other than The Old Man and the Sea, which is popular, I understand, in seventh- and eighth-grade language arts courses (precisely where it belongs with its faux-biblical prose). During the virus, I picked up The Sun Also Rises, which I’d first read in college and thought a fresh and wonderful book. Now it seemed shallow. Even the dialogue, which I thought so smart, sounded old hat. Lady Brett came off as an adolescent’s dream of what sex could be like with an ever-willing woman. If Hemingway is read today, it’s not for his novels but his short stories, which, at their best in “Hills Like White Elephants” and “Big Two Hearted River,” remain sharp, hard-edged gems.
Scott Fitzgerald faired best of the ‘20s generation. The Great Gatsby, the most popular of his novels, may be The Great American Novel of the 20th century. It captures young readers of every generation.
But what of my personal favorite as a young man, John Dos Passos? Rereading him amid this terrible virus, I believe he holds up best.
During the 1930s, Dos Passos was as popular as any writer of serious fiction in America. He had made his breakthrough after World War I during which he served in the ambulance corps. Two of his novels, Three Solders (1921) and Manhattan Transfer (1925), “changed the whole tone of opinion about the war,” as H.L. Mencken put it. They reflected the attitude, also popular in England at the time, that the war was a worthless conflict imposed by heartless leaders that had wiped out a generation of young men. But unlike Hemingway, Fitzgerald did not romanticize Europe and flee to Paris. In his view, America was all about the rejection of Europe.
Like Lewis and Hemingway, Fitzgerald was disgusted by the materialism and money grubbing of the America of Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. He supported various left-wing and radical causes and became particularly incensed over the treatment of Sacco and Vanzetti, the two anarchists accused of murdering a guard during a Braintree, Massachusetts, payroll robbery. His epitaph on the case summed up what it meant to radicals and revolutionaries of his generation: “All right we are two nations.”
Following Three Soldiers and Manhattan Transfer, Dos Passos moved deeper into radicalism. He denounced Franklin Roosevelt and voted for the Communist candidate, William Foster, in the 1932 presidential election. He dismissed the New Deal for trying to save a corrupt capitalist system. The depression pushed him further to the left. For a time in the 1930s, he was associated with the communist journal New Masses, though he never joined the Communist Party and wasn’t even much of a fellow traveler. In truth, Dos Passos was an idiosyncratic man of the left.
Out of his anger, Dos Passos produced his greatest and most original work, the trilogy U.S.A., which appeared between 1930 and 1936. U.S.A. is a big sprawling book of around 1,200 pages and his most original and influential work. Building on some of the anti-capitalist themes he first outlined in Manhattan Transfer, Dos Passos set out to paint a broad picture of America in turmoil. He used techniques borrowed from European modernists like James Joyce in a way no American author ever had before to create a new reality. He sprinkled his text with brief biographies of famous and not so famous people: Rudolph Valentino, Thorstein Veblen, Presidents Teddy Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson (a bête noire of his), and Henry Ford, among others. In the “Camera Eye” sections, he created news items from a pastiche of newspaper headlines and stories. The effect was to give the novel an immediacy and sense of dealing with the real world. The technique has been copied since, but no one has done it as well.
U.S.A. was a huge success and appeared just as Dos Passos’ career took a dramatic turn. In July 1936, the Spanish Civil War broke out. Dos Passos, like many of his fellow leftist contemporaries, most notably Ernest Hemingway, was drawn into the conflict. He went to Spain to work on a documentary film, “Spanish Earth,” designed to promote the cause of the Republican forces. Disillusion soon set in. One of his friends, José Robles Pazos, was caught up in the fighting among the various leftist factions and murdered by the communist secret police.
Like his contemporary George Orwell, Spain inaugurated Dos Passos’s distrust of communism and its fellow travelers and apologists. His consequent drift to the right was rooted in one of the abiding themes of his career—a deep distrust of power, especially power in the hands of an elite. Fear of unregulated capitalism and fascism now gave way to a conviction that the greatest threat to democracy was communist power. World War II furthered these concerns, with Dos Passos increasingly troubled by the power exercised by FDR during the war.
Dos Passos continued writing fiction and in 1962 published Mid-Century, a follow-up to U.S.A., only now the villains were on the left—especially labor leaders like John L. Lewis and Walter Reuther. Mid-Century lacked the creativity of his trilogy. Instead of the “Camera Eye” and other unusual techniques that seemed fresh in the 1930s, Mid-Century featured long documentary sections interspersed among the text. The book was a success, but the critics accused him of turning his back on his past. Dwight Macdonald, a former admirer and firm man of the left, wrote that Dos Passos had become “a simple Republican, scared to death of Russia and Communism.”
The man who once had written for the New Masses now became a contributor to Bill Buckley’s National Review. He came to view the American experiment through different eyes, even writing a highly sympathetic history of the Founding Fathers. In 1964, Dos Passos supported Barry Goldwater’s campaign for president. That shocked many of his admirers but was a natural outcome of his drift to the right that had begun in Spain. Both men feared communism and unrestrained power. In the 1920s, that power was in the hands of big business; now it was found in big government and what President Eisenhower called “the military-industrial complex.”
Maybe Dos Passos’ journey wasn’t that strange after all.

Meghan Markle and her independence threatens royal family - NEWS.com.au
Typically, when Princes William and Harry embark on a royal world tour, they host drinks nights for the members of the press who accompany them.
In a show of camaraderie, they’ve invited the press for tea in South Africa and a hotel-bar night in New York City.
But things were different this past October, when Harry and Meghan — the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex — toured Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand.
“They basically blanked the media on this tour, which is very shortsighted,” according to Duncan Larcombe, who covered the royal family for London’s The Sun for many years.
Larcombe told the New York Post that this is just another example of how the once-jovial, beloved prince has changed since his marriage to the American actress and how his long-term relationships are suffering as a result.
All of Harry’s staff have always thought he was fantastic, but the two of them (together) are high maintenance,” said Larcombe of the royal couple, adding that the prince has become “quite grumpy and aloof from his own inner circle of staff. Harry was always very pally with [them], so this is very unlike him.
“What people love about Harry is that he wears his heart on his sleeve,” Larcombe added. “He’s down to earth, a normal guy trapped in the royal world, and he doesn’t take himself very seriously. But now he is.”
The difference, sources say, is Meghan — whose American independence is rubbing some royal insiders the wrong way.
They add that it’s been tough for the strong-willed duchess, who is expecting a baby in April, to go from controlling her own personal and professional life to not being allowed to make all her own decisions.
As a result, she is allegedly taking her frustrations out on those around her.
“During their tour, just before they were about to go to the Invictus Games, Meghan was bawling at her hairdresser to get her hair right, while at the same time someone was ironing the bottom of the dress she was wearing,” said a tour insider.
Larcombe said he is “not in the least surprised there’s been teething problems” as the duchess adjusts to her new life and the constraints that come with it.
While her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, briefly held a position as a part-time fashion buyer before marrying Prince William, Meghan is unprecedented in that she previously had a high-profile acting and philanthropic career.
“As an actress, Meghan expects perfection,” he said. “But when you’re in the royal family, you have to learn that it’s not about you, it’s about what you represent.”
According to a longtime friend of Meghan’s, part of the culture clash comes from her eagerness to make her mark.
“Meghan is a great girl — the kind you can go and have a drink with. She’s always there for her friends and is extremely loyal,” the friend told the New York Post, pointing out how the duchess has had the same close pals for years, including her college BFF Lindsay Roth and stylist Jessica Mulroney.
But, the friend added, “She’s ballsy. She’s unashamedly ambitious — she has a great work ethic — and I can only imagine how that’s gone down inside the palace.”
Indeed, Meghan has thrown herself into her work. She’s hands-on at the Royal Foundation, the philanthropic organisation she leads with her husband, Prince William and Kate. And Meghan recently aligned herself with three more pet causes: The National Theatre and The Association of Commonwealth Universities, both of which are patronages she took over from Queen Elizabeth, as well as the charities benefiting unemployed women and animal welfare.
“Meghan wanted to get (deeply involved) from the beginning,” said a palace insider. “She’s very bright and questioned absolutely everything from her first briefing.”
It was Meghan’s idea to publish a cookbook to aid the survivors of London’s Grenfell Tower fire, which caused the deaths of 72 people in June 2017.
The Duchess of Sussex’s hard-driving work ethic has even pushed sister-in-law Kate to work harder since her recent return from maternity leave. “Kate has to keep up with Meghan!” said the palace insider.
However, this ambition has also ruffled feathers, with three key members of Meghan and Harry’s staff resigning in the past few months.
Among them, the couple’s private secretary, who had previously been the Queen’s personal secretary and was charged with helping Meghan settle into royal life. The duchess’ personal assistant had previously worked for singer Robbie Williams but, the Mirror reported, left the palace because “Meghan put a lot of demands on her and it ended up with her in tears.”
Similarly, Harry and Meghan’s chief protection officer quit after only six months because of resistance from the duchess.
“Even though (Meghan) was a famous actress, she could still do what she wanted in the way of getting around freely,” a source said. “But in her current role she can’t go anywhere without her protection team, and that’s a massive constraining force on an individual like her.”
All of this is stressing out her husband, sources say.
“Harry wants to be protective of Meghan,” Larcombe explained. “If she’s getting frustrated and stressed, he is the one reading the Riot Act to the staff and doing the demanding on her behalf.
“But you can’t blame Meghan, she’s gone into her biggest role yet and she’s put her heart and soul into it. Yes, she is firing off e-mails to staff at 5am, but she’s super-keen and Harry is taking his lead from her. He is under a lot of pressure behind the scenes.”
Adding to tensions are Meghan’s extended-family members. While her yoga teacher mother, Doria Ragland, remains dignified and quiet at home in Los Angeles, Meghan’s father and half-siblings have proven to be a constant embarrassment.
Despite having a reportedly strained relationship with her father, Thomas Markle, Meghan asked him to be a part of her May 2018 wedding to Harry. But days before the ceremony, he was caught staging and selling paparazzi photos — leading to him not attending the wedding. Since then, he has given interview after interview about how he has been unfairly cut out of his daughter’s life, how he hung up on Harry during a heated phone conversation, and how Princess Diana — Harry’s revered late mother — never would have allowed this treatment of him to happen.
He has even publicly begged the Queen to intervene.
Meanwhile, Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., and half-sister, Samantha Grant — to whom, friends say, she has never been close — have also been mouthing off to the press and stirring up chaos. Grant, who threatened to crash the wedding after she wasn’t invited, has criticised Meghan for wearing a $75,000 dress for her engagement photo but not sending their father any money. She has called Harry a “wuss” for not standing up to her half-sister, whom she has variously referred to as “the Duchess of Nonsense,” “Cruella deVille” and “Witchy Poo.”
As a result, the Sunday Times reported in December, Grant has been placed on Scotland Yard’s Fixated Persons watchlist — meaning police and royal security will keep an eye out for Grant should she turn up at Kensington Palace uninvited (which she has already done) and could be detained.
The palace has taken the approach of ignoring the familial issues. A royal source told the New York Post there are no plans to “give into” the Markles’ antics, and no plans to contact the father at all.
As if that’s not enough, some of the British newspapers have claimed there’s a rivalry between Meghan and sister-in-law Kate. Camilla Tominey of The Daily Telegraph — who first broke the news of Harry and Meghan’s romance — reported that Meghan had made Kate cry during a fitting for Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress. Tellingly, it was not denied by the palace.
But a prominent London high-society source told The Post, “I don’t think it’s true that Meghan and Catherine don’t get on — they are just very different people. Catherine is so incredibly lovely, and Meghan is clearly very determined and ambitious and is applying the same principles to this job as to any other [acting] role.”
The high-society source added that Meghan has a reputation as a social-climber: “In the early days, Harry’s closest friends tried to help Meghan out when she was the new girl on the block, but she didn’t really need them after she got the ring on her finger.”
Next up, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will soon relocate to their new home at Frogmore Cottage — which has undergone a $US5 million renovation — within the grounds of Windsor Castle. News of the move caused a storm in the UK, where there was speculation the couple were trying to distance themselves from Kensington Palace neighbours William and Kate, and reports that the brothers had fallen out over Harry and Meghan.
But Larcombe disputes this, saying, “They’re so, so close. I think that William was just concerned that (Harry and Meghan) were getting off on the right foot.”
Besides, he added, “Kensington Palace is like a posh prison! You’re surrounded by a public park and one half is a museum. The only place Harry would be able to play outside with the baby is a little courtyard.”
In fact, that child may be what eases tensions for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
“I think the baby is the biggest light at the end of the tunnel,” said the palace source. “It will give Meghan a chance to restock and to stay out of the limelight for six months so she can reflect on the way forward.”

$347M IN CREDIT CARD DEBT – Government is not the only one facing a mountain of debt. On Friday as the domestic debt exchange deadline expired, the Central Bank published information showing Barbadians racked up $347 million in credit card debt by the end of last year. About 93 per cent of that large sum is owed by individuals and households, with 38 000 new credit cards issued between 2015 and 2017 alone. There were 91 000 credit cards in 2015 and 129 000 two years later. Between 2000 and 2017 “credit card debt grew at a faster rate than overall debt has − at an average of eight per cent each year, as compared to five per cent for all types of debt combined”. The credit card information, which is captured in the 2017 Financial Stability Report, included data from commercial banks, Globe Finance and Cave Shepherd, and covered the VISA and Mastercard platforms.  (SS)
FSC WORRIED ABOUT EFFECT OF DEBT STRATEGY – As Government rolls out its debt restructuring programme, the Financial Service Commission (FSC) says it has some concerns about the possible impact on the insurance and pensions sectors. Chief Executive Officer Kester Guy told The Nation on Thursday that “these two sectors would probably be the areas that the restructuring will have the impact on immediately”. He said, as a result, the commission was working directly with some stakeholders to determine possible areas of impact. Guy was speaking on the sidelines of a seminar titled Investment Policy Review For Pension Plans at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, where he also revealed that the FSC had recognised that the debt restructuring exercise would reduce statutory benchmarks across the sector and that it was an external shock to the industry.  (SS)
$50M ROAD UPGRADE AT HAND – Some of Barbados’ most heavily used roads are in for an upgrade under the Road Construction Programme. And while there will be some disruptions as contractors work on five major roads, some along the ABC Highway, the teams are expected to work around the clock to minimise headaches. At the launch of Phase One of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)-funded project, Minister of Transport, Works and Maintenance Dr William Duguid said contractors would be ready to start shortly. “They told us they are ready to start, I would imagine, within the next week to two weeks, and I want it to be started and finished as quickly as possible to minimise the disruption on our roadways,” Duguid said.  (SS)
ELEGANT STEPS AGAINST THREAT OF MODERN SLAVERY – One of Barbados’ leading tourism companies is taking special steps to ensure its operations are not enabling human trafficking. Elegant Hotels Group, which owns and operates seven hotels and a restaurant, said it “has a zero tolerance approach to modern slavery and has and continues to implement measures to mitigate the risk within our business and supply chain”. In a statement approved by the company’s board of directors on September 20, Elegant Hotels chief executive officer and director Sunil Chatrani said “in the coming months” the group intended to take its efforts further. “Elegant Hotels intends to take the following additional proactive steps to safeguard against the possible threats of modern day slavery: expending due diligence on subcontractors and suppliers [and] modern day slavery training across the group,” he said. (SS)
CLOUD OVER UNIVERSITY – Mystery remains today after the chief executive officer of the Washington University of Barbados, Gopi Venkat Rao, was taken away from the university in handcuffs by police yesterday. Controversy swirled yesterday after officials from various Government departments and students met on issues that included the setting up of the university, which was established in 2016 and based at the Casa Grande Hotel, St Philip. Speaking after a near three-hour meeting, Minister of People Empowerment Cynthia Forde said investigations involving legitimacy and living conditions were being carried out after the Ministry of Education reported that there were issues surrounding the university. “We are here because we received information yesterday [Thursday] from officials from the Ministry of Education that there were some challenges with the school and that there were challenges students and faculty had,” she said. (SS)
RAO ASSISTING POLICE – Chief executive officer of the Washington University of Barbados, Gopi Venkat Rao, is currently in police custody and assisting the Criminal Investigation Department. Rao was taken into custody and removed from the university’s premises at Casa Grande Hotel in Oldbury, St Philip yesterday. He was removed by police after a long meeting with Government officials, university staff and students.  (SS)

FRAUD U – It was in the waning months of the Freundel Stuart administration, three months before a general election, that Minister of Education Ronald Jones boasted that the island was making great strides as a hub for medical education. Among the earliest and brightest jewels of the adminstration’s thrust was the Washington University of Barbados, housed at the repurposed Casa Grande Hotel, owned by entrepreneur Ram Mirchandani. But the gem became a tarnished dud on Friday as police escorted Washington University’s chief executive officer, Gopi Venkat Rao, off the Oldbury, St Philip campus, a wanted swindler. The head of the medical school turned out to be an alleged wanted fugitive in India, sought for bilking thousands of dollars from hundreds of students with promises of admissions into foreign medical universities. Approximately, 200 students, mostly drawn from India, were gathered this afternoon for nearly three hours as a high-level Government team broke the news. Led by Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Cynthia Forde, the team included Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of People Empowerment Neil Rowe, and officials from the ministries of labour, health, and education, and the Welfare Department. The students and faculty employees were only made aware of Venkat’s deceit on Sunday, September 30 after media outlets India Times News Network and The Hindu newspaper reported the day before that over 200 students were duped by an educational consultancy firm of which Venkat is the owner. Six of Venkat’s staff members were arrested in India, and police launched a hunt for the director, his wife Nikita Venkat and an associate identified as Zameer, The Hindu reported. The fraudsters convinced clients that they had secured tie-ups with medical institutions in several countries. They allegedly promised them seats in medical colleges in the U.S. and China. Police also identified four similar cases where Venkat duped several students and then shut shop to restart in a different province, according to the respected newspaper based in Chennai. Prior to his arrest, Venkat was unreachable by staff and students. His executive secretary, Tricia Newton, disclosed that the staff have not been paid and persons felt like they had been “defrauded”. The staff of approximately 40 people had not been paid for more than three months and on-campus staff and students had no access to food. “It is a dire situation, I watch people at work every day crying [and] begging,” Newton revealed. She also divulged that Indian staff were routinely replaced after their work permits expired. “It is basically a cycle where [management] pay for their [workers’] ticket, gave them work permits; their work permits expire; they did not renew them; they did not pay the persons for months. People were just around here begging; [management] would get rid of those and bring in another set,” Newton said. Students gathered at the Casa Grande campus were confused, frustrated and concerned about what the day’s events meant for their future. They did not have access to food, electricity and water utilities had been cut off after the administration failed to pay the bill for five months and the university had yet to be accredited so they were unable to complete their degree or clinical experience elsewhere. Some wanted to know if the university will remain in operation and whether the thousands spent and all their hard-work were for naught; others expressed the desire to return home. Sowjanya Racharla, 23, pleaded for someone to send her home after she spent the last year being led by false promises. Racharla revealed that her family sold their property and took out a loan to finance her dream to become a doctor. As the oldest of her parent’s two children, success was always her hindsight but Racharla felt broken and betrayed. “ I came against my dad; my dad said, ‘Baby you already have a degree why do you want to go back there?’ and I said, ‘Dad I want to become a doctor and this university is saying they can send me to the United States where I can get placed better than India’,” Racharla explained, saying that she had cried until she could not cry no more. “I was the hope for my parents and he [Gopi Venkat Rao] was my hope and now he is gone,” she added. Despite suggestions from Ministry officials that students could transfer to other universities on the island, Racharla expressed a loss of hope and fear that the circumstances could recur. “Yes, they will transfer but again my father has to send me dollars to eat and stay here; Barbados is not cheap!” “I am not rich, I am not even middle class, I am under poverty. My parents sold my property, took loans and sent me around $30,000 US to Barbados,” Racharla shared. Saddam Husen, 25, has been studying at the institution since its opening in 2016. He was disheartened that what looked to be a promising future all came to naught for not only him but for his family. “What about our future? What about our money. What has Government decided? “We are away from our family . . . . There is nobody to protect us . . . . We don’t have any support over here,” he said, crestfallen. A consultant for the Washington University of Barbados, Subash Agarwal, questioned the procedures the unaccredited university went through to be registered in Barbados. Agarwal was speaking as a parent who invested $32 000 US in his daughter’s education. He was recruited by the Venkat’s company in India and was assured that the institution met all the necessary health requirements by a video which was presented to the staff before their arrival in Barbados. The video featured then Prime Minister Freundel Stuart and Minister of Health John Boyce guaranteeing that the institution met the necessarily stipulations, said Agarwal. Barbados TODAY has not seen the video. He claimed a month after the general elections, former Minister of Education Ronald Jones visited the campus and assured the staff and students that they would soon be accredited by the Barbados Accreditation Council. “They provided a letter to all the consulting people, gave us videos of the health minister, Prime Minister, videos in their function at the university . . . . I thought all was well,” Agarwal explained while adding that those videos were also shown to potential students to encourage them to join the school. “They collect millions dollars of money, hundreds of students careers!” During his consultancy, Agarwal recruited 11 students. Now he feels deceived and “cheated” as both parent and an employee of the university. He expressed hope that the Government of Barbados would be able to transfer the students to another university in the interim. Minister Forde emerged from the meeting to tell journalists she was flabbergasted by the events which unfolded. The ministries were working to ensure that the students and on-campus staff would have access to water, electricity and food by the end of the day, she said. She added that provisions would be made for students wishing to transfer to another university. She emphasized that Government would “give a helping hand” to the students and staff and urged them not to have negative images of Barbados. “I pray that this message that will go out is not a negative message that will mar the name of Barbados we are not accustomed to this kind of behaviour and it is a pity that we were not made aware before now,” said the Minister. “We will do what we can as a Government and as a people to give them the measure of comfort that we believe that they deserve”.  (BT)
TRAGIC SWIM – A 70-year-old Barbadian who resides in New York went for his usual swim this morning not knowing that it would be his last. When Barbados TODAY arrived on the Fitts Village Beach, St James, this morning, several onlookers were seeking to get a glimpse of the deceased, Victor Dawson, who was lying on the beach wearing blue and orange shoes with a blue beach towel covering his face. Son Keith Odle told Barbados TODAY that his father, who lived at Mount Vernon, New York, came home on Tuesday to attend a family reunion and planned to return on October 19. “He went away 52 years ago. I was supposed to see him tonight and I ain’t seen him since he came on Tuesday,” he said. Odle was on his way to work when he received a phone call that his father had apparently drowned on Fitts Village beach. “I get a phone call that my dad drown. I was on my way to work [so] I came back and saw him here,” he sombrely reflected. Odle said their relationship was a very close one despite having not seen each other face to face in years. Today was the first time in three years that Odle had seen his father. “I only see him this morning cause I was supposed to come tonight. I see him now that he dead. I said I would come down tonight and spend time with Daddy but that is how I find he,” he said adding “we always talked on the phone but I did not use to see him.” Relatives wept openly over the loss of their loved one while undertakers from Two Sons Funeral Home removed the body from Fitts Village Beach just after noon. “[Them] is the ones that out there crying . . . but I not crying. I may cry late tonight when no one is watching,” Odle said. Dawson leaves to mourn two children and two grandchildren, some of who reside between Barbados and the US. (BT)
FAMILY, FRIENDS SAY FINAL FAREWELL TO MILLER – Hundreds gathered at the Coral Ridge Memorial Gardens to celebrate the life of former Chairman of the Barbados Tourism Product Authority (BTPA) Cecil Miller. During the two-hour service tributes poured in from the likes of his friend Sam Waithe, Former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) the BTPA Dr Kerry Hall and his daughter Saski Miller who spoke highly of Miller’s sense of humour, intelligence and love for the tourism industry. They sang hymns such as How Great Thou Art and Blessed Assurance. (SS)
HUNDREDS PAY LAST RESPECTS TO GREAVES – Politicians, trade unionists and people from all walks of life turned out in their numbers at the St Lucy Parish Church earlier today, to celebrate the life of prominent Barbadian politician and diplomat, Evelyn Greaves. In a eulogy written by his wife of 48 years, Francilia, and read by former deputy General Secretary of the National Union of Public Workers and close friend, David Bowen, Greaves was remembered as a man who had lived an “honourable and productive life”. “He never deviated from his early Christian teachings. He was a man who never lost the ability to find common ground with the lowliest of persons. All kinds of people would be accorded hospitality in our home and our girls grew up understanding from very early that social status did not define a person and snobbishness and arrogance were not attractive qualities,” Francilia wrote. Daughter Stacey Greaves-Walcott and granddaughter, Maya Walcott also paid tribute Greaves speaking fondly of his love and support for his family. Among those at the funeral were Governor General Dame Sandra Mason, Chief Justice Sir Marston Gibson, Prime Minister Mia Mottley and several members of Cabinet. Also in attendance were by political stalwarts Sir Wes Hall, Sir Maurice King, Sir Philip Greaves, Sir Warwick Franklin and Sir Richard Cheltenham. Former Prime Ministers Freundel Stuart and Owen Arthur also paid their last respects, as well as former trade unionists, Robert "Bobby" Morris and Sir Roy Trotman. (SS)
WORLD: US SENATE CONFIRMS KAVANAUGH FOR SUPREME COURT - The Republican-controlled U.S. Senate on Saturday confirmed Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, dismissing anger over accusations of sexual misconduct against him and delivering a major victory to President Donald Trump who has now locked in a conservative majority on the court. By a vote of 50-48, the deeply-divided Senate gave the lifetime job to Kavanaugh, 53, after weeks of fierce debate over sexual violence, alcohol abuse and his angry response to the allegations that convulsed the nation just weeks before congressional elections on Nov. 6. Kavanaugh will help take the highest U.S. court to the right, perhaps for many years, and his confirmation is a bitter blow to Democrats already chafing at Republican control of the White House and both chambers of the U.S. Congress. Conservatives will now have a 5-4 majority in any future legal battles on contentious issues such as abortion rights, immigration, transgender rights, industry regulation, and presidential powers. Adding to a dramatic day on Capitol Hill, women protesters in the Senate gallery shouted “Shame on you!” and briefly interrupted the vote. (Reuters)

How do i know what my car insurance covers?
I recently got into a car accident, just yesterday. There was 3passeners in the car. I, one of the 3. My sister who is 21 was driving the '99 Ford focus. It was not her fault. we were at a four way intersection and had a green light to go. Everyone was stopped besides our light going south &the other going north. An elderly woman on the right hand side who was going to turn, crashed into my side. (The passenger front, as well as the back door.) It is all crashed inward. We then hit a palm tree on the side of the road and landed on top of it. Some yellow/green fluid leaked out. Us 3 passengers in the Ford taurus all went to get checked at the hospital. We are all fine. But now we have no idea what to do with this wrecked car, that has now been towed. The Ford Taurus we were in, only has liability insurance. how will the car be fixed or can it even get fixed? This car accident all took place in Avon park, FL. The car we were in has Insurance from Michigan. Since that is where my father and his girlfriend purchased the car last year. The insurance &everything is under his girlfriends name. So Shes the one who said it only has liability insurance.""

If men have to pay more for car insurance then why aren't women paying more for health insurance?
You can use the same exact argument they use against men to increase their car insurance. http://www.jfponline.com/purls/Pages.asp?AID=2450 From the departments of Family and Community Medicine (K.D.B., E.J.C.) and Internal Medicine (J.A.R.) Reprint requests should be addressed to Klea D. Bertakis, MD, MPH, Department of Family and Community Medicine, 4860 Y Street, Suite 2300, Sacramento, CA 95817. E-mail: [email protected]. BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that women use more health care services than men. We used important independent variables, such as patient sociodemographics and health status, to investigate gender differences in the use and costs of these services. METHODS: New adult patients (N = 509) were randomly assigned to primary care physicians at a university medical center. Their use of health care services and associated charges were monitored for 1 year of care. Self-reported health status was measured using the Medical Outcomes Study Short Form-36 (SF-36). We controlled for health status, sociodemographic information, and primary care physician specialty in the statistical analyses. RESULTS: Women had significantly lower self-reported health status and lower mean education and income than men. Women had a significantly higher mean number of visits to their primary care clinic and diagnostic services than men. Mean charges for primary care, specialty care, emergency treatment, diagnostic services, and annual total charges were all significantly higher for women than men; however, there were no differences for mean hospitalizations or hospital charges. After controlling for health status, sociodemographics, and clinic assignment, women still had higher medical charges for all categories of charges except hospitalizations. CONCLUSIONS: Women have higher medical care service utilization and higher associated charges than men. Although the appropriateness of these differences was not determined, these findings have implications for health care.""

""My car was stolen and now I'm being investigated for insurance fraud. I'm only 18, help!!?""
My car was stolen on Saturday. I was driving in the car with someone I thought I could trust and when I went inside a subway terminal to meet another friend I left the keys in the car and the person who was in the car with me took off with the car, my phone, my purse, and about $1500 worth of shopping bags and boxed furniture that I had just bought from Ikea. I called the police and they aren't doing much help. I've had to investigate a lot of this myself. The person who took my car doesn't have permanent housing so its been hard to track him down. I found out from the cops he has 4 other warrants out for his arrest for crimes relating to cars. Obviously, I didn't know that when I left him alone with mine. After my dad filed a claim to our insurance company, they said they were going to begin an investigation and sent us a letter saying it was within their rights not to give us any money for the car. They think me and the person who stole the car are working together to get money off of them. Their going to interview me and I'm really scared. The last time I broke the law was when I was five and tried to steal a barbie from Walgreens. I'm only 18 now and I don't even know how insurance or fraud work, never mind insurance fraud. They're going to accuse me. They only thing I'm really guilty of is being stupid/ naive/ gullible. I trusted a person who I should not have trusted. My questions are: 1) How can I track down this person? I sent a messege on Facebook to all of our mutual friends telling them to keep an eye out. 2) How can I move the investigation from the police (who are on my side) along, when they aren't really doing anything? 3) What am I supposed to tell the insurance guy? What should I say? I just want my car back. I feel so helpless, please help.""

Geico's quote was WAY lower than anybody else's. Several hundred dollars lower, in fact. Why is it mandatory to buy car insurance?
I understand if it's on a leased car but why on 100% paid off private cars? Mortgage companies make borrowers buy home insurance as a condition to get the Liam but once the mortgage is paid off you're free to not insure your property. Why is it legal for insurance companies to force all car owners to buy coverage? It's not constitutional no different than forcing them to buy health insurance.

And lastly, how should I ask!? They know I'm mature and responsible, but I don't think they are willing to help me out. I absolutely hate asking for things from people, but I really need help so that I can help my family. So how should I do it? Thank you so much! :) I'll choose best answer!!!""
Insurance will not pay for storage?
I reside in California, and I was recently involved in an accident. The other party accepted 100% fault for the accident. My vehicle has been in storage since November 19th. The other party's insurance says they will only pay for storage up to the 23rd because paying more is not a reasonable amount. Can they really do this? If I do pay the storage that they will not cover, it will still cost me over $500! I mean they accepted fault, and it is their client's fault that I have been without a car for so long. It is their fault that my car had to be towed and put in storage. They are the professionals. They should be able to negotiate with the company, and not put the responsibility on me. What is the best way to handle this?""

How much home insurance should I get?
I just bought a house for about $180,000. I am looking for homeowners' insurance, but I am confused as to how much I should get. Should I insure for just the replacement cost of rebuilding the structure, or for the % of the mortgage I am financing. I got 3 different quotes, and they were for $396, $502, and $858. The lowest one was for $396 b/c it was with my car insurance company, but they will only insure the cost of rebuilding the structure, which they estimate as $110,000 (the house is small and in a decent neighborhood.) The second company wanted to insure me for that, but I got them to quote me on $140,000. That amount, when you add in the 25% overflow they allow you, meets the 90% of the mortgage amount I am financing. The 1st company would not do that for me. The 3rd quote was for $140,000, and was with the people w/whom I have had renter's insurance for 12 years. The only difference was that there was not a wind damage deductible of 2% on the 3rd quote. My loan officer says to just get enough insurance to rebuild the structure. How much insurance should I get?""
""I am a college student I need a good car with low insurance (I have 25,000 to spend)?""
I have a decent amount of money to spend on a car, but I am still young, and in turn my insurance would be high if I got something like a mustang. I need something like looks sporty, is moderatly prestigious, sexy, etc but will have low insurance for someone who is 18. I love BMWs. I havn't ever been in an accident and I think age 24 is when my insurance will go down a lot. I guess I will have to wait to get a sports car then.""
