Unrelated to my usual content but I was in the mood to go back to some other absurdist buddycop media after finishing Deadloch, so I did my nth rewatch of certain episodes of Due South. It's never not funny how confused yet intrigued Fraser is this whole episode.

PIRATE WAR / FRASER'S RIDGE VERSES.
With the arrival of the notorious Captain Flint and Long John Silver to Shipwreck Cove, fresh from the fall of Nassau, comes a truth that, in the midst of raising a family, Jack had been turning a deliberately blind eye to: the end of the pirate’s life as he knows it. Cutler Beckett may have been long gone, but there are plenty of others eager to fill that void and take credit for eradicating piracy from the Caribbean, and Jack soon finds himself torn between the home he has created for himself and the self-preservation instinct he can trust to keep him and his family alive.
The Fraser's Ridge verse follows on from this, with Shipwreck Cove destroyed, and Flint and the crew of the Walrus vanished. Jack, Elizabeth and the other survivors of the battle retreat to Tortuga in the wake of their defeat in order to count their losses, but the reality of their situation is clear: high seas piracy is a lifestyle soon to become a thing of the past. Fortunately, the friendship that the family have forged with Jamie and Claire Fraser provides a refuge, and the Swann-Sparrow clan relocate to Fraser's Ridge, where they take on the name Davis and assimilate into civilised society as best they can. But the American Revolution is brewing in the colonies, and it's not long before Jamie's obligation to North Carolina's governor causes difficulties of its own for the two families.
These verses follow on from each other and are for the most part private verses with Jen ( hangtherules & mysticwrit ) to include a three-way crossover between POTC, Black Sails and Outlander. But I am also very open to expanding it to different interactions if people are interested! It assumes the end of the pirate's way of life and, most importantly, the destruction of Shipwreck Cove, and explores how Jack navigates a more 'civilised' way of life in the shadow of the growing American Revolution.

I've got a theory about why this happened, and I think the other Mandoverse shows support it, especially Mando S3. Basically, these shows have over-committed to using the Volume to the point that it hurts their action scenes. Not just in terms of how they look and feel, but what can even be put in front of the camera.
As Greig Fraser (the brilliant DoP who worked on early Mando as well as Rogue One, Dune and The Batman, and first got the Volume to work) has said, the Volume comes with pretty steep limitations. Spielberg has managed to do some things with it that Fraser hadn't thought possible, but for the most part it restricts what angles you can shoot at and also what movement you can have. Film Crit Hulk talks about it in more detail re Mando back in 2020:
Note HOW MANY times they’re standing relatively flat and the camera angle is directly parallel to a ground so that it puts the horizon in the same 1/3 of the frame spot behind them. They do this because if they raise the camera higher (as many shots should and would) it would reveal the “boxy” angle of the stage. It may seem small, but it REALLY de-emphasizes the natural surrounding and I’m worried it’s hurting the overall look of the show.
And it occurs to me that arguably the best-shot action of that series is probably the one where they went out and just filmed in the California hills. Note how Boba gets to tower over that one Stormtrooper and how there's a real sense of wham when he lands.
youtube
If you're shooting everything in a context where nothing can move all that fast, though, it really hurts your most kinetic characters. When Kelleran Beq gets his showcase in Mando S3, the camera can't move to add oomph to his strikes or give him a hero shot (in Kenobi you see them trying this with Vader, but they have to stop short of an angle which will actually give the image punch). If you've seen Dune Part Two, think of how the camera races along with Paul and Chani in some of their fights with the Harkonnens. That's wholly missing here.
And this also impacts the old jet packs (and Jedi acrobatics, for the most part). Whereas Jango could rocket around merrily, it's notable that the Children and the Nite Owls alike only really use their packs for dedicated aerial scenes. In the pirate fight, you can easily imagine them boosting from rooftop to rooftop and sparking even more "high ground" memes, but instead they conduct the fight entirely at a walking pace and on the ground.
And all of this hurts Sabine in particular, because like Ahsoka, she originated in animation and has previously been depicted in a really kinetic way. Even without a jetpack, she's a very acrobatic fighter in Rebels, and it's one of the things which makes her a really fun character. But in the process of moving to live-action, Filoni and co opted to change the characters to fit the Mandoverse style, instead of changing the style to fit the characters. The result is that lots of the things that first made Sabine so cool and fun just aren't really possible now.

How would you pitch watching Due South to someone who doesn't know it?
THE PREMISE: mountie from the northern reaches of canada goes to chicago to avenge dead dad (also a mountie), gets into buddy-cop shenanigans with a detective. said detective leaves the show in season 3 and gets replaced by another detective, shenanigans continue to ensue. there's also a dog. he's very cute.
THE PITCH: honestly, after being in the spn fandom and having most of popular culture awash with prestige shows (that are not spn, but like spn are typically dark and gritty and like killing characters off too) and having most of the popular media landscape try to cover their collective asses by having an aloof, 'you-can't-make-fun-of-this-because-we're-not-taking-it-seriously-ourselves' air, it was truly refreshing to sit down with a close friend of mine and check out this show.
i'm being completely serious when i say there's a certain je ne sais quoi about this show. is it because it's from the 90s? perhaps. is it because it's canadian? maybe. i wasn't even alive when this show first started airing and i'm not a media analyst. it basically takes the premise of the dudeley do-right cartoon and asks 'okay, but what if that was like, a real guy?' and fucking runs with it to the wildest heights. it's a comedy, but it's also so bizarre in some ways that it makes it a truly unique treat to watch. i love psych and brooklyn 99 for having a comedic procedural aspect, and neither of them are comparable in whatever it is that due south is doing.
there's honestly a lot of heart and soul in the entire show, and it has the ability to shift from just being comedic to having drama, mystery, and moments that pull at your heartstrings. it's a show that you can enjoy on the surface as a fun episodic show with fun characters and fun moments, but it also lends itself quite well to extrapolating on the characters, their motivations, etc. (and by etc i'm also including any shipping you might want to do).
i won't say it's a paragon of DEI, but again, i think it has a level of earnestness which makes any slip-ups it does have something i can kinda view with indulgence, versus shows that are making the same (or worse) mistakes 20+ years after this show already ended. these characters are treated with a level of dignity and respect, and i think overall the characterization is pretty consistent - there are some shifts happening between seasons 1-2 and 3-4, but i feel like it has more to do with budgets, a change in creative team, etc., versus writers not 'getting' certain characters.
there's also a lot of memorable episodes, scenes, bits. i think the latter seasons are more campy (my favorite) and some eps from s1 and 2 make for legitimately some great television. even the more mid episodes have something worthwhile, too. some of my fave moments in no order:
fraser (the mountie) saving and talking to? a rat in a strip club
also him going to a leather club
twice
and meeting a mountie in a latex version of his red serge uniform
using a tarp as a parachute
mafia egg conspiracy
aliens??
due south but make it silence of the lambs a little bit
performance arsonist
lake pirates? ghost ship?
also why are most of the major bad guys here doing some form of environmental crime? get your captain planet on ig, i'm into it
also fellow cops can also be bad guys. acab ig??
sick muscle cars eric kripke himself would've enjoyed. sometimes they get set on fire tho
due south but make it to wong foo thanks for everything
fraser running away from women so he doesn't have to kiss or interact with them
way too much time in closets, in general.
fellas is it gay to ask your new partner of one week maybe to pretend he's a woman so he can decide if he finds you attractive
there are red ships and green ships but no ships like partnerships :)
and to reiterate about the dog: there's a dog who's half wolf and all deaf and fraser can talk to him 'because he (the dog) reads lips'
his dead dad shows up too sometimes
anyway, it was really nice to watch this show for the first time, there are still moment i scream-laugh at because they're just so ridiculous and i'd never catch any other moments like that in any other show. i definitely see why there's still active fans for it thirty years later. there's also some wild shipping fodder here, which is at least partially why there are still fics getting written for these guys today. destiel if the cw weren't cowards etc etc. when i watched the finale, i cried tears of joy because while i'd miss the characters, they got an ending that actually seemed to fit, instead of it being a rush job, which is not unique to spn but, you know.
also you can watch it for free on youtube rn.

I went to see From The Rehearsal Room at the Savoy and I compiled notes. Keep in mind I wrote this on the tube on the way back from it so it might be a bit crazy but yk…
- Before the show we went on stage to look round and Hadley and Ramin were there to tune their guitars so they performed Hushabye mountain for us and then the group was taking a picture and Hadley snuck in and photobombed
⁃ They wore matching sockssss and it wasn’t even deliberate
⁃ I cant even remember why he brought it up but once Hadley had a bear on the roof of his apartment and they had to tranquillise it
⁃ He also performed once with a racoon staring at him
⁃ Ramin was singing this really beautiful song and Hadley was in the back with his legs crossed and one elbow resting on the piano and he was chugging water as everyone was crying
⁃ They bashed on people who watched I’m A Celebrity which was kind of funny tbh
⁃ Hadley is a Lord Of The Rings girlie which we love. He’s got that deluxe Lord Of The Rings trilogy swag
⁃ RAMIN SANG TIL I HEAR YOU SING AND THE AUDIENCE SCREAMED THE MINUTE THE CHORDS STARTED
⁃ THEY SANG LILY‘S EYES
⁃ HADLEY FORGOT HIS CHARACTER’S NAME (NEVILLE) AND THEY WENT ON FOR AGES TRYING TO NAME THIS CHARACTER AND THEN HADLEY JUST REFERRED TO THE CHARACTER AS NIGEL
⁃ Hearing Hadley talk about the Pirate Queen was very lovely
⁃ They were talking about the Secret Garden and they asked if it was ‘the’ Secret Garden or just ‘Secret Garden’ then they started using different words instead of ‘the’ and then Hadley started speaking in a northern accent and it was oddly good. I know he’s an actor but have you heard him in the Pirate Queen lmao
⁃ I don’t condone shipping irl people but once you see it live you can’t deny it. My mum literally thought they were husbands
⁃ Ramin sang a song and then afterwards Hadley said how the love just CAME OUT of him for Ramin
⁃ They held handsssss
⁃ After the interval Hadley sang Funny from City Of Angels and oh my golly goodness gracious it was absolutely brilliant. It’s one of my favourite songs ever and aaaaaaaaaa it was so good
⁃ Also Hadley got us to do three part harmony and he started speaking French??? It sounded angelic tho it was so beautiful. I love Just Let Go so so much it was so good with 1000 people singing it in beautiful harmony
⁃ Also the way he taught it: my choir teacher could never
⁃ He’s so patient and dad-like
⁃ Well he is a dad
⁃ A dad I’d like to-
⁃ He didn’t win the dilf awards I can’t finish that sentence
⁃ Just a reminder that I was there for the dilf awards 2022
⁃ Also it’s confirmed that Hadley’s mum calls him Robert which I always wondered about bc his name isn’t actually Hadley
⁃ Also right right right
⁃ Sheytoons turned into Gaytoons bc during the line “this time there’s no way of hiding the way you feel” Ramin got really tense and then he was properly reacting to the song but subtly and I don’t think it was deliberate
⁃ Babygirl this time there’s no way of hiding the way you feel for Hadley Fraser
⁃ RAMIN SINGING WHO ID BE
⁃ AND IT WAS SO GOOD
⁃ AND HADLEY SAID “PETITION FOR RAMIN TO BE THE NEXT SHREK” AND BABYGIRL YOURE SO RIGHT
⁃ Empty chairs at empty tables
⁃ Empty chairs at empty tables
⁃ I am not okie dokie
⁃ It was beautiful
⁃ So so beautiful
⁃ And then when they did the iconic harmonies I started sobbing
⁃ It was too much for my brain to handle
⁃ Then they said they couldn’t leave us on a sad note so they did YOULL BE BACK
⁃ I CANNOT EXPRESS HOW FUCKING BRILLIANT YOULL BE BACK WAS
⁃ So it started with Ramin, all bouncy and funky and stuff
⁃ But then oh my golly goodness gracious Hadley
⁃ He OWNED King George III so so hard
⁃ He did a very posh British accent and acted the living hell out of it
⁃ It was the best thing I’ve ever seen
⁃ And then he stuck one of his legs out in sort of a tango way and was very flamboyant and I’ve seen silly Hadley but I’ve never seen truly campy, flamboyant Hadley and it’s the best kind of Hadley
⁃ Then the whole audience did the da da da da das and it was so neat singing with Ramin and Hadley live
⁃ And they were doing a dancey dance and HADLEY AS KING GEORGE III I BEG, THATS ALL I ASK OF YOU, PLEASE ILL ACTUALLY ENJOY HAMILTON IF HADLEY IS KING GEORGE PLEASEEEEEE
⁃ Then it ended and we did a meet and greet and Hadley asked my name and I said it and Ramin and Hadley both shook my hand and then Hadley recognised me (it’s complicated to explain but basically he once saw a picture of me) and went “oh Maddie!!! It’s so good to see you!” Then he hugged me. Robert Hugh ‘Hadley’ Fraser hugged me. He didn’t do that for anyone else. He opened his arms and said “come here” in a nice way not a creepy way den
⁃ Overall such an insane experience, if you thought either of them were good in recording it’s just even better live. I’ve never heard them sing so well.
If any of you were there watching it please add anything I missed on
