Books of 2025: WANDERLUST: A History of Walking by Rebecca Solnit.

The last chapter in this book is titled "Las Vegas, or the Longest Distance Between Two Points," so I had to bring it on our Las Vegas/Grand Canyon trip, obviously. And I did indeed start it in Vegas!

However! We got back from Vegas *checks wristwatch* a month and two days ago, and I just finished it. It was a much denser, chewier book than anticipated. Parts of it were super neat! But parts of it moved at, say, two or three miles per hour. Lotta focus on Romanticism as early origins (which. isn't really my wheelhouse). A little bit of biology in there, a little bit of nature writing, some feminism, etc.--I think she does a good job of qualifying that this is a history of walking, per her subtitle, and it's very much Hers. I busted out the flaggies for a few passages, and I'll probably reread those, but I doubt I'll reread the Whole Thing.

The astronomical instrument (an equatorial armillary sphere) that was unveiled on 6 February 2024 in front of the Archives of the Republic of Slovenia in Ljubljana – facing the location of the old Jesuit college, where its conceptor first received his education – is a full-scale replica of the original, finished in 1754, still in place at the Beijing Ancient Observatory in China.

Ferdinand Avguštin Haller von Hallerstein, known also by his Chinese name Liú Sōnglíng (劉松齡; simplified: 刘松龄) was born in 1703, received Jesuit education in Ljubljana, Vienna and Graz and arrived in Beijing in 1739 as a missionary, set to work at the Imperial Astronomical Bureau (which had been run by the Jesuits since 1669). In 1746 he succeeded the office of the head of the bureau and ran it until his death in 1774 – longer than any of his predecessors. He died soon after a stroke he reportedly suffered upon hearing the news that the Pope had disbanded the Jesuit order (in 1773; that suppression was later lifted in 1814).

Beside the astronomical work (published as Observationes astronomicæ), he also worked as a cartographer (creating a map of Macao and its environs, of Manchuria and contributing to the Jesuit Atlas of China) and is noted for making the first exact estimate of the Chinese population (calculated to have been 196,837,977 in 1760 and 198,214,624 in 1761).

The armillary sphere is one of a kind, combining Chinese and European astronomical knowledge as requested by the Qiánlóng Emperor (乾隆帝), who wanted to both honor the tradition of his ancestors and make the instrument as accurate as possible by the standards of the time. The instrument is 3.7 m long, 2.1 m wide and 3.3 m high. It is made of bronze and weighs more than 5 tons. Its replica is made of the same material and is of the same size, built in China using 3D-scanning technology and later transported to Slovenia, and is also fully functional. The design of the original instrument started in 1744 and when it was finished 10 years later, it was considered the pinnacle of Chinese astronomical science as well as artistic craftsmanship.

The Astronomical Instrument was conceived by Augustin Ferdinand Hallerstein (*1703 Ljubljana, †1774 Beijing), a Slovene Jesuit, astronomer, mathematician, cartographer and diplomat, during the time he lived in Qing China. The original stands at the Beijing Ancient Obsevatory. The replica of the instrument is a gift of the Embassy of the People's Republic of China as an incentive for the continuation of cultural exchange between Slovenia and China. i post so much about link click being about doomed love that i feel leave out how important gender themes -- namely sexism; the violence and pathetic-ness of male chauvinism -- are from the jump. ep 1 cheng xiaoshi, while in the body of a woman, has to endure the sexual harassment she did. ep 2, he is underestimated for being a woman. etc.

it continues, and season 2, of course, handles this far more explicitly. i don't know if the sexism itself is the theme, or if Link Click puts cheng xiaoshi through sexist violence as part of the broader theme of empathy; the importance of a human life; that even if you cannot change the past or someone's fate, they were important -- people cared for them -- and their own stories were cut short...

maybe it is still about doomed love, but not just between lu guang and cheng xiaoshi. but loving each other, all humans, even though we know we will alll die. about helping in the meantime with what we can, because we are all each other...

maybe, too, about the ways we might try to control our loved ones in the face of that inevitability. how dangerous it can become. how cruel. and, also, how that attempt at control can pull them down with us.

the use of water throughout to describe time: tides, vortex; more importantly, link click’s music uses the language of drowning. you cannot save them, but you will try. it’s not your fault: it was always meant to be this way.

I’ve been reading Crash (as one of Ballards works recommended by @lieu42) and the introduction by Zadie Smith (honestly that intro is my favourite bit of the book) and it’s made me think of this photo that I first saw in a tumblr post a while back.

The idea of how everyone uses everything and everything uses us. She didn’t have to land on a car, the photographer could have not even had his camera on him. But still her suicide damaged the car and the car being what cushioned her fall caused Robert C Wiles to find her body and take the photo.

The framing in particular is what makes me relate the photo to Crash. How her body and the car (and reflections on the car) interact feels like what Ballard was getting at in the book.

it amuses me how ppl will make PSA posts about how such-and-such platform uses "AI" and tells you to be Very Angry about it via context clues, but then the same ppl will happily reblog AI "art", even when it's very easy to tell and/or it takes two seconds to look at the damn comments on a post to find that it's AI generated, or that the very OP of the post tagged it as AI art, or answered an ask like "yeah I use a generator for the pics," or puts "I use midjourney to make the pics" in their profile on mobile, etc etc etc

I guess it's easier to screech about how an option in a program that you can turn off/disable within seconds and that won't actually do anything more than what your autocorrect or grammarly or siri or alexa or google assistant or photoshop filters have already been doing with/harvesting from your data for years now (spoilers: you've been using and training "AI" algorithms for longer than chatGPT has been mainstream! yes, it's basically the same concept!) than it is to do a few seconds of reading or double-checking to ensure you're not reblogging art theft and tagging it as "photography" 🙃
