wanted to draw some seablings and water
so here they are :3
i remembered i own watercolors, and also a scanner lol (though i don't think i like what the scanner results look like that much,,, tho, it was better than using the phone camera as there isn't any annoying shiny-ness)
idk how to draw water but i think it turned out quite interesting looking
i used a part of john william waterhouse's "hylas and the nymphs" -painting as a reference
here is some progress pictures
my phone camera has trouble processing color pencils ig, you can see it looks a bit fuzzy for some reason
also i really like their expressions from the sketch, i did lose those in the coloring progress which is sad ;^;
btw feel free to give me any requests in the askbox abt empires (season 1) cast/hermits to draw as i enjoy working off of prompts (inspiration has been hard to come by recently, this is a cry for help lolol)
#empires smp#ldshadowlady#jimmy solidarity#mcyt fanart#empires s1#i hope I'm doing the alt text thingy right I'm really bad at describing things clearly lol

MYTH-TOBER 2024 11. Thanatos So there will be a bit of mythology and a bit of my life story here. Thanatos as the deity of peaceful death is very interesting, he comes, cuts a lock of your hair and then Hermes could do the rest. He has a twin brother Hypnos and oh boy, the old paintings of them are so cute. Check out "Hypnos and Thanatos: Sleep and His Half-Brother Death" by John William Waterhouse, excellent one. Btw, he got butterfly's antennae because that's his sacred animal, which is also a symbol of the soul. BUT now some lore from my life. Mythology somehow stuck with me for a long time, once in primary school when we talked about Greek gods each of us got our own god for which we were supposed to dress up and talk about. I got Thanatos and I'll tell you that 10 years ago I couldn't find almost anything on the Polish internet. A very short Wikipedia and a few pictures, because nobody spoke English at my house at the time, so my mother took matters into her own hands. She was a seamstress and sewed me a black and white outfit (the one Thanatos is wearing on my art), bought angel-costume wings and helped me paint them black, attaching even more feathers to make them bigger. And believe me, how much she heard from my grandmother that it was "a profanation of religion" and so on. On day we were supposed to present it, I was late for my first lesson because I was doing the most "deadly" make-up that the cheap cosmetics we found at the last minute would allow me to do. And I had a phenomenal performance, I even walked around the room with my paper knife painted gold in one hand and a paper torch in the other. I had "diabełki" (little devils) in it, which were gunpowder wrapped in parchment, wrapped in small balls. You could buy these at kiosks and when you hit the ground with them there was a mini BOOM, I used them at the end of my presentation for t h e w o w effect. And you know what? I got a 4- (which is like B in a Polish school), and you know why? Because "it's very unsightly to watch a girl pretending to be a male character". BUT I DID NOT CHOOSE A MALE CHARACTER, that teacher gave us gods, I had no choice in with one! 12-year-old me was sad and 22-year-old me is disgusted by that woman. But you know what? I went to an art school after that and there was an "initiation as a student lit party" (which always had an interesting theme at that school), we of course got a topic about Greek mythology. I put on my Thanatos outfit, went to the bathroom to do my make-up and met a girl from my class who I hadn't talked to, and who commented on something about my costume. We started talking and talking and talking... 3 years ago we finished this school and she is still my close friend so I can say that the effort of making this costume really paid off. Thanks to my mom lol. I really like Thanatos for that. Inctober by @/arkhaos.art (on ig)

Favorite Painter: John William Waterhouse, my beloved. Also very into Edmund Blair Leighton & Fracisco Goya. I'm so, so into medieval romanticism, & the pre-Raphaeites, & there's just something about how Waterhouse is just exclusively painting babes with great hair & long noses that especially speaks to me. Like, his paintings are consistently some of my faves. He also leaned into mythology a lot, so that probably has something to do with it too. Similar case with Leighton of just "his consistent painting of pretty princesses speaks to my soul." Goya is a pure goth answer though, because I am allowed to contain multitudes.
Favorite Poet/Author: I've never been the biggest poetry girly, & I think that's because my brain just, like, can't pick up on the rhythm & meter. Like it is completely indistinguishable from prose when I read it. This is a thing that makes me very sad, believe me. When I make my every few years attempts, though, I do enjoy Poe.
In terms of actual prose/not just stuff that reads like prose in my mind, my favorites are Poe & Salinger. Tbh, I don't do a lot of following authors & just pick up something if the synopsis slapped, & it's super rare for if I enjoyed a story/novel to color if I'm like "this author fucks & I need to read more specifically by them"
Favorite Singer: Florence Welch, my queen. I mean, I listen to a lot of stuff, but Florence Welch is hitting all the correct parts of my brain with 90% accuracy. Special shout out to my fave funky Finnish guy Käärijä, though: I've only had him for a year & I like his music a normal amount 👍🏻
Favorite Band: This is so hard? I used to have such an easy answer (it was Green Day, btw), but it's gotten so complicated in the last 9 years. I think, probably, my favorites at the moment are Beast In Black, Windrose, & The Amazing Devil. They're all scratching the correct itch in my brain (will always have a special place in my heart for Green Day, though. Very intense special interest back in the day)
Favorite Meal & Drink: Oh man, this is another one I have a hard time picking 😅. I pretty much just drink water, tea, & coffee; I guess my favorite drink is tea? Favorite meal is maybe chicken tikka masala? Or grilled cheese & tomato soup? One of those, maybe (at least right now)
Favorite Outfit/Aesthetic/Style: Man, IDK. Life is short, dress how you want. I will find the aesthetic beauty in almost anything because I love fashion. 60s medieval revival fucks, all the goth substyles fuck, cottage core fucks--it all fucks. All I know is that whatever I'm wearing, I'm not wearing jeans. I have not worn jeans for years & I am not going to start back up now. Skirts/dresses/leggings only. Also dramatic sleeves. I love dramatic sleeves.
Favorite Item You Own: The Sasha Bratz Rock Angelz repro. I waited for her for a good year? Two years? However long it took MGA to finally drop my girl. I got one of the last 4 in the city & my hands were shaking the whole time & its honestly a little silly, but sometimes healing the inner child is buying a doll of your favorite character from your favorite line & displaying her on your desk shelf.
Favorite Perfume: I used to be at least kind of into perfume, but I kind of got out of it. I honestly don't wear it a lot (I forget more often than not). You'd think I'd be more into perfume given how into, like, scented candles I am, but oh well I guess 🤷🏻♀️
Tagging (if you want, obvi): @vamprlestat, @cerseiwexler, @jotterjots, @loksthegreat, @mercurygray, @godswood-girl, & @toxicjayhoo

Might be crack but I think in his last memories about his half siblings, the song that Sansa sings to herself while brushing Lady's coat is Florian and Jonquil.
Hmm yeah could be! I do think it is significant that we have yet to get any lyrics from it, despite it being a heavily referenced song, particularly connected to Sansa. The closest thing we have to its narrative outline and characters is from The Hedge Knight:
"You are no knight," she was saying as the puppet's mouth moved up and down. "I know you. You are Florian the Fool."
"I am, my lady," the other puppet answered, kneeling. "As great a fool as ever lived, and as great a knight as well."
"A fool and a knight?" said Jonquil. "I have never heard of such a thing."
"Sweet lady," said Florian, "all men are fools, and all men are knights, where women are concerned."
It was a good show, sad and sweet both, with a sprightly swordfight at the end, and a nicely painted giant.
[...]
"That was good," Egg enthused. "I like how you make them move, Jonquil and the dragon and all. I saw a puppet show last year, but they moved all jerky. Yours are more smooth."
Although that might be a variant, a play version of the folktale, rather than the exact song of Florian and Jonquil. We also have the song Six Maids in a Pool connected to F+J:
The pool from which the town took its name, where legend said that Florian the Fool had first glimpsed Jonquil bathing with her sisters, was so choked with rotting corpses that the water had turned into a murky grey-green soup.Jaime took one look and burst into song.
"Six maids there were in a spring-fed pool..." – ASOS, Jaime III
Will the OG F+J song that Sansa loves include that famous meeting? Maybe, since hot pools/water are a recurring motif that connect Jon and Sansa quite nicely. Would be pretty cool. I think GRRM must have been influenced by this famous painting by John William Waterhouse when coming up with F+J, because that’s the image my mind immediately goes to when I think of their meeting:
(Hylas and the Nymphs, 1896)
A dark haired youth with an auburn haired beauty...*waggles eyebrows* Sounds about right, George. And maybe to a lesser extent, these three as well:
(A Naiad or Hylas with a Nymph,1893)
(La Belle Dame sans Merci, 1893)
(Lamia, 1905)
Honestly, I’m going to have to make a separate post of all the John William Waterhouse paintings that could be Sansa/Alayne/Jonquil, because there are a lot of redheads and raven-haired ladies, not many blondes though, interestingly. But what the hell, I can’t resist including some more:
(Ophelia, 1894)
(Lamia, 1909)
(Echo and Narcissus, 1903)
(Tristan and Isolde, 1916)
A lot Waterhouses’ paintings depict tragic romances and figures from Classical mythology, as well as Shakespeare and Arthurian legend (sources that have no doubt influenced GRRM to a degree as well). People often conflate him with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, since they depict very similar subjects, but Waterhouse is more of a later follower of their principles, obviously hugely inspired by the likes of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, etc. You can actually trace a line of influence right from the Brotherhood to GRRM actually, because William Morris was a periphery member of the group, and later a big influence of Tolkien. Today, Morris is primarily known for his textiles, but he was also a HUGE medievalist and a great writer as well...honestly, big up Morris, a true renaissance man. So much of LoTR can actually be traced back to Morris and his romances (most notably The House of the Wolfings, 1889), so when people say Tolkien is the father of modern fantasy, BITCH it was my man Morris.
But anyway, Florian and Jonquil mirrors these tragic romances that so influenced Waterhouse and the Brotherhood, since it is a story that is both “sad and sweet”. In fact we know that it is a tragic romance from Sansa’s pov:
For those who remained, a singer was brought forth to fill the hall with the sweet music of the high harp. He sang of Jonquil and Florian, of Prince Aemon the Dragonknight and his love for his brother's queen, of Nymeria's ten thousand ships. They were beautiful songs, but terribly sad. Several of the women began to weep, and Sansa felt her own eyes growing moist. – ACOK, Sansa VI
Basically, all I’m saying is...I’m pretty certain GRRM is aware of Morris, the Brotherhood and Waterhouse, if not a big fan of them. I’m also pretty sure that Jonquil was auburn haired and Florian dark-haired, coz to all of these, I’m like:
ANYWAY (got kinda off topic), I do hope we get Sansa singing Florian and Jonquil to Jon as part of his post-warg/resurrection recovery. I know @fedonciadale has talked about the importance of singing in relation to Sansa, so it would be great for that specific singing to Lady memory to include F+J, and then to have that song reoccur later in Winds. So fingers crossed we finally get to read the lyrics of this famous ditty! :)

Fic-writing intent: Write a scene where Eliot and Maggie run into Sophie in a theater lobby because they all are attending the same play. The main purpose of the scene is for them to encounter Sophie.
Fic-writing reality: Get sidetracked into finding/selecting a specific famous painting based on a Shakespearean play for Eliot to correctly identify a reproduction of from across the lobby, for the purposes of Eliot/Maggie banter. Sophie has yet to even appear.
(I succeeded, BTW. Miranda - The Tempest by John William Waterhouse. This has absolutely no bearing on the fic plot; I just think it's pretty.)

Name: Erika Age: 22 Meaning behind tumblr url: it actually just popped into my head one day so when I got a blog I used it! Also I'm agnostic so it's kind of relevant Hobbies/Interests: drawing/painting, interior design, makeup, acting, working out Why you follow me: dragon age 😊 Random fact about yourself: I'm visually synesthetic Question for me: what are some of your other interests?
Hi Erika! Lovely to meet you :) (I really like your url BTW)
Those are some of my interests as well! I love makeup and I used to be a big acting/theatre junkie. I’m still an admirer even though I consider myself mostly retired as of now.
As for other interests, well, other than theatre, Shakespeare, swimming and fashion stuff, I recently fell back in Skyrim hell, and I’ve been playing it constantly lately :) Like. A lot, lol.
Also another thing, I love art from the pre-raphaelite period. Especially by John William Waterhouse. This is one of my favorite paintings:

Hi there! what's your favorite (or one of your favorites) poem, book, song and painting? lovely blog btw
my favourite poem is the second coming by wb yeats or (typically) the love song of j alfred prufrock by ts eliot.
my favourite book is the secret history by donna tartt (i don’t think i’ll ever love a book as much i love this one which is a SHAME but i can’t help who i am)
my favourite song is something by florence + the machine but it changes with mood/season/weather (it’s currently what the water gave me) but i also love anything nina simone ever sang.
favourite painting is very difficult! i always look for the lady of shalott by john william waterhouse, but when i’m at the national portrait gallery i force the people im with to go and look at the tudor portraits because i love the anne boleyn, and richard iii portraits so much (and also elizabeth i’s ditchley portrait). but i don’t think i could pick an absolute favourite, i’m not as attached to art as i am the first three!
thank you for this question, it was nice to think about as i woke up ☀️
