Hold on, you said something about Childe having a fabulously gay brother?? How did I miss that?
It's a headcanon! It's never mentioned in the game but look at this guy. No way he doesn't have a fabulously gay older brother.
As in, WHO DO YOU THINK PICKED HIS GLOVES FOR HIM? Huh? Huh?
#his name is athis#he needs to have a greek name for extra gayness#he's also probably a journalist#the type that wants to be a writer but needs to make a living somehow#childe probably keeps his distance because what if athis is just around for fatui gossip#they do dine together during rare occasions when the boy gets back to the capital#the only sibling with whom he has a normal sibling dynamic#as in they barely talk and most conversations are 'have you heard of that shit (the other sibling) did'#half of that headcanon belongs to hydrachea#ray's words of wisdom#childe#tartaglia#crackpot hc

Cw mention of self harm. If u read winter turning you already know but just making sure.
So many thoughts about the icewing sibling dynamics
Like, First we have hailstorm; He had been the âgolden childâ, he was top of the ranks, probably did great in school, had this whole grand future set up for him. But he⌠was a teenager. He probably had IMMENSE stress from always having to be perfect all the time. That was a kid! He wanted to be a kid! His parents were abusive and neglectful pieces of shit! And he like,,, has to take care of his siblings, too. We know tundra and Narwhal only cared about them if they were âdoing something for the familyâ they probably where neglectful as shit to them when they were younger. Pretty much the whole responsibility of being a semi-healthy parental figure was put on hailstorm!!!! But like,, he wasnât really supposed to be taking care of them . he probably knew that too, or at least partially. He loved his siblings, of course, but like I said; heâs a kid! He wanted to be a kid!
Then we have icicle; who had they same pressure but as hailstorm but also like ⌠couldnât deliver all the way he did. She probably actually had a a lot of resentment to him in some degree. But, like I said, thatâs like her parental figure! She loves him! She literally self harmed to try and get him back! She had to always try and be the perfect daughter but, she never seemed to quite get there. Sheâs a burnt out gifted kid at its finest. She been told she has to try for the throne, like, life or death battle! She knows sheâs either gonna win or sheâs gonna die and sheâs known that since she was like a toddler, probably. And like, she loved hailstorm, but he was simultaneously one of the reasons she could never really deliver. And then we have her other brother, who she loved too, but she like⌠had to be unkind to him. With how she was treated, she really believed he deserved it. That really had to drive animosity between them, even if it was normalized.
Then we have Winter, whoâs the âproblem childâ, even though heâs barely been a problem. He been trying SO HARD, for so LONG. And he really feels like he canât seem to get it right. especially because one of the only people who was at least vaguely positive and whom he really truly loved and looked up too, got (supposedly) murdered because of his actions. And his last main action to him, letâs not forget basically his parent and someone he actually feels happy around, insulting him into the dust. It also would be so hard, because now, he just has Icicle. Who he loves of course, but they already probably had a strained relationship and now we have all the grief of losing hailstorm, and icicle is probably blaming him too! Not to mention, heâs blaming himself! But heâs still with her, theyâre siblings. Thatâs shown they were still there for each other in the faintest way.ďżźďżźďżźďżźďżźďżź

I'm so particular about Destiel fanfics because of how I see Dean. Especially the fix it fics.
As much as we all want them to fall into each other's arms.
I don't think Dean knows that he loves Cas. I don't think Dean quite knows what love is. The desperation that he feels when Cas is gone, well he's desperate when Sam is gone so it must be the same thing.
He knows Cas is his best friend, so when he loses Charlie, it can't be all that different, right?
He would never leave Sam behind, just like he would never leave Cas behind. Because they're family.
Dean has never known what love was. At the age of 4, all love was sucked out of his life. The only people he saw were his father (abusive and negligent) and his baby brother, whom he loved from the pov of a parent, not a sibling. And as he got older, his dad encouraged him to chase girls "for the fun." Never even hinting that Dean, in all of his wishes, could ever have a normal life. LEARN to love. Have things that he wants. He was to be a soldier, the grunt, and nothing more.
So Dean knows lust. And he knows familial love. But he never knew anything about how he loved Cas. Because when he thought of Cas, it was hardly ever just "I want to get in his pants." Dean honestly would have been able to get over that. No, with Cas, it was more. With Cas, he wanted that apple pie life. He wanted more of the days where they woke up and shared space, where Cas sat with him as he silently drank his coffee. Where Cas texted him throughout the day with an embarrassing amount of emojis and made him laugh with his lack of pop culture knowledge. The dynamic was love, but to him, friendship was so foreign he didn't know the difference.
So of COURSE Dean didn't respond when Cas confessed. His whole perspective on everything was altered the second Cas started speaking. When he said "I Love You." And Dean didn't have time to realize that THAT'S what he'd been feeling before Cas was ripped away from him forever. Years of it. Gone in an instant.
So he sat on the floor and he sobbed. And he ignored Sam. Because in all of this, he realized that for YEARS he'd had his shot at happiness in front of him, but couldn't see it, because he didn't know the words. He didn't know the difference. And he knows that this time, he'll never get that chance again.

I was just thinking about The Borgias and how one of the changes from history had an intriguing consequence for its own narrative.
The Borgias focuses on Rodrigo's children by Vanozza dei Cattanei, and I think suggests that they are Rodrigo's only children in order to simplify things. But IRL, this core trio quartet did have older half-siblings, at least including two older sisters (Isabel and Jeronima) and a brother (Pedro Luis).
This matters to the family dynamics in The Borgias because, historically, Cesare was not the firstborn son. The various firstborn-son privileges went to Pedro Luis because that was a perfectly normal thing to do and Cesare went into the priesthoodâalso perfectly normal for a younger son. And then, when Pedro Luis died, his privileges fell to the next son who could receive them, Juan.
But in The Borgias, Cesare is the firstborn. So Juan getting the duchy and the military career and basically every secular advantage is genuinely quite strange.
There's eventually some blahblah about Rodrigo actually having a master plan for Cesare with a hereditary papacy or whatnot, but this seems a pretty weak retcon to me. To me it seems like show!Rodrigo just bypassed his firstborn son in all this for not much of a reason beyond personal preference, which would be a really big deal in their social context (even as depicted in the show).
I don't think their dynamics suggest Cesare was recently disinherited; I think Juan has clearly been given the firstborn son treatment for a long time.
The interesting thing about this to me is that steamrollering Cesare into the priesthood and handing everything else over to Juan would be such a weird slight on Cesare that his resentment and longing for Rodrigo's validation make a lot of sense in his context.
At the same time, all this makes Juan's position very shaky on paper, because Rodrigo could just push Cesare back out of the priesthood and actually treat him like the firstborn son if he felt like it, and people would probably think this was more appropriate. And IIRC Rodrigo actually threatens this at one point, so it's not just a theoretical possibility. I personally don't think show!Rodrigo would ever have really displaced Juan (least of all in favor of Cesare, on whom Rodrigo projects all his self-loathing). But it makes a convenient bludgeon to get Juan in line.
And I don't think Juan knows that Rodrigo wouldn't actually do it. But I do think he knows that his position and privileges are dependent on this apparently arbitrary, highly unusual choice of Rodrigo's that could easily be changed. And I suspect this plays a major role in how Juan thinks of himself and Cesare, and what their dynamic is on his side as well as on Cesare's.

I was discussing this with a friend of mine and Iâd be interested to know your take.
Weâre both big comics nerds for the batfam, and weâve come to the consensus that even with the out of pocket moments, arcs that donât hold up well(fugitive comes to mind), and the slew of other post crisis issuesâWe think the best version of the batfam would be right before Damian was introduced.
I know how this makes me sound and Iâm not sorry, Tim as robin was great and I loved him as the younger brother of the fam but also not bruceâs son let them be weird friends like before identity cri-
Iâm getting off topic. I apologize.
Batfam feels very bloated modern day, and I genuinely preferred when Jason was a crime lord, Dick and Tim were close tightknit brothers. Babs was oracle and Cass was batgirl. Iâd want Steph to be alive and not taking cassâs job but one thing at a time. (also tim and cass are lovely as siblings/friends)
What is your ideal batfamily composition, what do you have the most fun with?
And I hope youâre doing well!
Oh hereâs a dangerous question.
My favourite period of Bat comics is probably, hmmm, 1996 to 2004. Not only are there some great writers doing work during that period, the family dynamics are interesting and complex because there's fun levels of tension between various members, but also there are almost equal numbers of male and female characters and the women are allowed to be messy and complex and flawed while still heroic. You've got Bruce, Dick, Tim, Barbara, Helena, and Jean-Paul, plus Cass from 1999 onwards, with assistance from Steph, Selina and Dinah to varying degrees.
What characters and dynamics do I find the most fun? Well, I like there to be tension in the Bat family. I like every person in the group to be linked in differently, with different relationships with other members, rather than being "Bruce and his kids". There's this concept I have of what is the 'core' of the Batfam in the period between 1995 and 2009: it's not Bruce, it's actually a trio, consisting of Dick, Tim and Barbara, all of whom who have very strong ties to each other, managing and balancing the rest of the family between them.
Dick manages the broader community ties, rather than the Gotham ones. Dick's the one who all the other families know and are most likely to approach for help; he's got the respect of the Titans but also of the Justice League. Dick is basically the public relations guy standing between the Bats and everyone else.
Tim is the glue of Gotham. Tim knows everyone in Gotham and has teamed up with them at some point and knows how to convince them to come and help out, even if they aren't on good terms with the rest of the Bats, and can force people who are normally opposed to work together. Tim's the reason all the Gotham vigilantes aren't six separate bitter blood feuds or a perpetual mafia war.
Barbara is the expertise. She's not only the coordinator and planner who ensures that everything runs smoothly, who has everyone's contact details and the ability to pull in the specific assistance needed, but she also maintains contacts that still see Dick as 'Bruce's kid' with the way most of the Justice League only are familiar with her as an adult hero. She's got the best JSA contacts via Dinah. She can stand up to Bruce and tell him to back down and pull his head in in a way the other two cannot. And she's the only one of the three who has a proper working relationship with Jean-Paul Valley.
The changes in the Batfamily dynamics by firstly removing Barbara from Gotham, and then adding Jason and especially Damian, forced the shape of the dynamics to centre themselves around "Bruce and his sons" and "everyone else", rather than being a spread network that converged on a trio.
My ideal Batfamily? It's Bruce, Dick, Barbara, Tim, Cass and Damian. While I think that Damian is part of a very clear change of direction in storytelling, I think there are worthwhile stories to tell about his dynamics with the others listed here, and on balance he allows for new directions of storytelling.
(Yes, there's an obvious name missing there. It's deliberate. I remain unconvinced that having Jason around as 'family' is a better use of his character than as a ghost haunting the narrative or, if he must be alive, as an extremely irritating villain)

Malenia for the ask meme!
Responding to this ask late because i have just come home fjvididksk but its here!!
Favourite thing about them i am so insane about the whole bodily autonomy rights surrounding her. You never had a choice in what you were born as you want to desperately run away from it but your body never belonged to you from day one and in the end you fall to your origins and hurt yourself badly. I also like the whole kindred of rot thing bcs its deeply sad like. They are both victims of it malenia who never wanted to host the rot and to whom the kindreds represent her falling to her worst impulses while the kindreds actively do something that malenia hates not out of malice but because they were born from that. *chefs kiss*
Least favorite thing about them uuuugh i feel like the promised consort battle of aeonia stuff has really cheapened her and the whole conflict and i think her whisper being "miquella awaits thee o promised consort" just sucks
Favorite line My flesh was dull gold...and my blood, rotted.Corpse after corpse, left in my wake...As I awaited... his return.
Its just so *froths at the mouth* it embodies perfectly her feelings about the scarlet rot and the shame that came from actually blooming for the sake of miquella and grappling with the fact that because of it she killed several hundreds of people and i am *aaaagh*
brOTP while i have started to headcanon their dynamic as being incestuous in the last few months, i think her and miquella's story also really works well as just a normal if tragic sibling relationship. I also see well a malenia and godwyn dynamic where well. Ok he wasnt the number one mother and father figure at once but i think he did rly care about her and in my headcanons he did a lot of legwork to include her in activities that she normally wouldn't be able to do by making them more accessible to her disability
OTP Malmiq lol. Its funny because i at first didn't even ship them, but dlc enabled me to ship it out of spite. I just. Really love the whole we are incestuous children of an incestous god angle of it and the fact that they influenced each other's lives and goals and personalities so much
Aside from that, finlenia. Like holy shit i am not normal about it. Imagine just being so loyal to/in love with your military leader you not only accept part of her curse but are also willing to drag her unconsious body for the whole continent in the middle of a civil war just to save her life. Fucking cinematic. Fucking beautiful
nOTP i dont even have anything against the ship per se because i find it really interesting dynamics wise but malenia/radahn has been ruined for me thanks to all the fucking violent rape porn revenge fanart of it
Random headcanon i think that she developed a very marked gallows humour. Like... since her childhood she expected to either die or turn fully into a vessel of rot so after a while she's like "oh well until i fix it i will just Joke About My Missing Limbs" which was very jarring to people who were personally meeting her for the first time
Unpopular opinion idk how unpopular it is but i think her devotion to miquella was. Unhealthy. I do think he loved her wholeheartedly (and didnt charm her opposed to what some people on some website say), and i don't even blame her for being so codependent with him (girl was neglected BADLY), tho
Song i associate with them least a song and more of an ost, but Divine Service from the Lies of P soundtrack! Its very melancholic and full of longing and nostalgy, which just
Favorite picture of them the one in the shaded castle! It is a pretty basic portrait, but the area building up to it is fantastic and elevates it in my mind

halloween plots round one.
we both work at a horror house and i swear what happens here is not normal. you have noticed the groups always leaving missing one or two members too, right?
i was about to viciously murder you and your boyfriend but what the fuck? did he just leave you to die??? that's a huge red flag. let's kill him together.
silent hill only we used to live here when it was a normal town and now we have seen all our loved ones get murdered and are trying our best to survive in a world full of monsters. alternatively, one muse lives there, the other muse is a family member of the original game characters looking for them and instead finds muse a.
"innocent" girl meeting a serial killer and manipulating him into doing whatever she wants.
witches. witches. witches. in every version.
charmed inspired plots where we play sisters and their significant others. give me the angst of one of them falling for a demon. the heartbreak of forbidden love between a witch and their guide!!! the breaking the rules. the sibling dynamics. the fights!!!
witches that are evil and conspire to bring chaos into people's lives.
witch and werewolf falling in love. think penny dreadful.
witch and witchhunter falling in love. bonus points if we set it in the past and the witch is just trying to help the people but they are scared of her and so hire the best witchhunter in the realm. the only problem is that something evil is actually after the town and so they have to join forces. the angst the drama the guilt on both sides as they reluctantly start falling for their sworn enemy!
plot based on hotel california. maybe they are witches that lure people in to sacrifice them. maybe it's a cult that worships an old god that demands blood. maybe they are vampires that need victims. maybe they are just cursed to always remain inside the hotel!!
a modern telling of frankestein in which muse a grows obsessed with death and bringing people from it and so when muse b (whom they have been obsessed with since always) dies, they steal the corpse and start working on resurrecting them. alternatively, muse a and b work together to bring muse c back. or muse b finds what muse a is doing and joins them.
bluebeard but maybe instead of a man it's a woman and she kills men. or maybe instead of brothers the wife has sisters and they team up to kill him and make it look like he disappeared so she can live a lavish life.
anything on here.

I always feel so frustrated with how unimaginative Marvel is with Remy, the only interesting things he's had is New Sun and X-Factor. Idk if this is true, but I read there was some rumor that Remy was gonna be an alter ego of Sinister, which would've given the writers more to work with imo. I think why some writers like Rogue and Erik more since they're much easier to work with outside of shipping. Same with Kurt, whom I sometimes think Remy is a pale imitation of (Catholic, martial artist, looks demonic, ladies man, even his powers suit a thief more than Remy's). If Kurt and Rogue weren't siblings, I'd sooner ship Rogue with him than Remy. Also, since Remy can only charge non-living things, it just makes him look weak and limited compared to other characters. I don't say all this shit to be mean, but I do get frustrated with how little material he's given, and can understand why his character is constantly put on the back burner in various media compared to other X-Men characters.
Yeah I remember reading somewhere they'd thought about doing something like that with Remy and Sinister and I think instead went with New Sun? Something like that. Also considered having him be ANOTHER Secret Summers Brother and I'm glad we didn't go this route lol we need to stop the Summers-Grey family tree from taking over the whole X-verse while we can.
I'll say that I don't feel that Remy is a pale imitation of Kurt mainly because I feel Remy deals with a lotta things that Kurt really doesn't on a personal level (true parental abandonment like no margali in SIGHT kinda shit, street life, crime, child soldier gangland shit, the greys and blacks of morality etc). You see more of those things in his solos which can even get a bit of a noir vibe to them which is nice but people just rarely wanna put in the time and effort with Remy. They rarely get him so they knock him down into say, the TAS 90s Gambit mold and call it a day. Which is just ....... no one wants that. Not Gambit Haters, not Gambit Stans.
And I get what you're saying about his powers but I think if he could charge living matter constantly like he can as New Sun homie would be so comically OP. I think the real issue here is just again, fuckers don't know how to write him so they go for whatever's easiest. So it's all lame, dumb and boring. If they let him get funky with his powers a bit more it'd could be super cool.
The pro of Rogue and Magneto when made scene partners is that they do have much more solid pre-existing characterizations, vibes and "story packs". As a writer you can walk in and already there's a couple of things you can do which are kinda like Rogue or Magneto Classics. Remy not so much so he ends up being like, Rogue's loser sidekick which sucks.
I feel you tho on the shitshow that is comic Rogue-Kurt dynamics. I too can see the appeal and charm of them as a romantic ship just as much as I can see them working wonderfully as a sibling pair. My beef around them has been for years that we get this Big Reveal that Mystique is Kurt's Bio-Mom but after he has his initial freak out for a couple issues in Excalibur or Uncanny or w/e he was in at the time I forget I just remember Amanda is there this whole thing-- IT NEVER REALLY COMES UP AGAIN BETWEEN HIM AND ROGUE AND THEY JUST ACT LIKE NORMAL AND OCCASIONALLY MENTION THEY'RE SORT-OF RELATED IN A WAY THAT'S MORE OF A REMINDER TO THE AUDIENCE????? LIKE IT'S FUN TRIVIA INSTEAD OF A PLOT POINT OR IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIP????
their first serious non-combat interaction was basically Kurt telling her to drop dead when she comes to Xavier for help when she's 17 and he's 21. He finally cuts her some slack after she ALMOST DIES IN A SUICIDE BY VILLAIN ATTEMPT to save Wolverine's fiance which makes Wolverine go "yeah okay fine your not total dogshit ig" so NOW Kurt'll stop being a raging asshole to the mentally ill teen lol (I'm shit talking Kurt rn but this is genuinely part of why I love him). Then there's MAYBE a couple of scenes that are outside of Action Stuff before the X-Men "die" in the late 80s and we get Excalibur where the two of them interact, the biggest of them is him FLIRTING WITH HER.
Uncanny X-Men (1963) #192
Now-- it's Kurt so this isn't anything really all that crazy. He jokingly flirts with like 90% of the X-Men. It's just the kinda silly funny quirky guy he is. But when I'm trying to think of say, Rogue-Kurt moments POST the Mystique Reveal that really feel like People Connecting or them Actually Being Siblings I draw a blank. This flirting scene is more iconic and stand out than basically all of their 00s and on interactions because it feels like a natural and very emotional conflict they WOULD have. He goofs around like he always does, her feelings get hurt, he realizes what he's done and feels like an ass and wants to fix it. EMOTIONS HAPPENED HERE, CHARACTERIZATION AND CONFLICTED OCCURRED. THIS CONFLICT AND LATER RECONCILIATION WILL LEAD TO A BETTER FRIENDSHIP AS WE GO! THANKS CLAREMONT!
Even at her wedding he's basically just like "well I AM her brother (remember? did you see that watchmojo listicle? have you read my wiki recently) and I AM blue so I should ALSO be in the wedding."
There's really not a lot of content of them like, hanging out, post 2004 or so. Some of that is just them being in different books but a lot of it just no one putting in the time or effort. X-Treme X-Men (2001) was all about Rogue looking into shit related to Destiny's writings and grappling with some Family and Personal Grief at the start there. Kurt shoulda been around for at least the first arc. Not thunderbird that absolutely nothing of a dude. It was the perfect setting to work on this issue that the 6 degrees of Mystique⢠has made. One of the only other encounters between them I can think of that's post-90s is this:
Rogue (2001) #4
And this interaction is set like VERY SOON after she joined the X-Men!!!! So it's not even a truly modern scene of them just vibing!!!!
To me, they're NOT siblings. Not in the way Kurt is with Amanda who's his ACTUAL adoptive sister or even in the way that Rogue is with Bobby, Sam or Scott who she just has Massive Broship Energies with and it's entirely because their 6 Degrees of Mystique⢠is tenuous at best for how much it would really matter to them. Kurt HAS a family! He HAS siblings! Mystique abandoned/lost him and never looked for him or intended to tell him about their connection until forced to. He was raised by Margali and sees HER FAMILY as HIS family and they think the same! Like that's a standard ass adoptive family vibe.
Rogue is found by Mystique and Irene and raised by them in near isolation ON ANOTHER CONTINENT and is never informed about Kurt even in a past "i had a baby and lost him" tense kinda way or Graydon either. To her knowledge growing up she HAS NO SIBLINGS OF ANY KIND. She meets and fights against and then beside Kurt with no idea there's literally anything connecting them but that they're both mutants and x-men for like, YEARS even IN canon. Their whole relationship is rocky as shit for a WHILE there and then she gets YEETED SECRETLY TO AUSTRALIA AND HE THINKS SHE DIED. And let's be clear-- sure he's upset about her "death" too but he is MUCH more upset over the "deaths" of Logan, Ororo and Peter who he ACTUALLY NAMES WHILE TALKING ABOUT THIS GRIEF. Because you know... THESE RELATIONSHIPS ACTUALLY HAD FUCKING SCREENTIME.
Excalibur (1988) #1
He's not a monster, he does give a shit about her, but realistically over the years VERY little time has been put into building ANY relationship between Rogue and Kurt of ANY kind and it's frustrating when they really wanna act like they've got one. They don't. And it pisses me off because realistically Rogue/Kurt is less fucked up than Amanda/Kurt and guess which one is canon. Because of the 6 Degrees of Mystique⢠people don't really ship them even tho there's an even more Yikes Kurt ship that's canon and Does Not Seem To Fucking Die, there's been no real development of ANY kind of relationship between him and Rogue, they've lived their ENTIRE lives not knowing each other or not really being more than coworkers and Kurt has NO INTEREST in truly claiming Mystique as his mother which is valid-- she fucking sucks.
I think Rogue/Kurt has legs and it's aggravating to me because I also really like Rogue & Kurt siblingship! I grew up watching Evolution! The sibling vibes and friendship that grow naturally up between them even BEFORE the Mystique Reveal in that show are just CHEF'S KISS. But in comics they IMPLY a familial connection that really.... doesn't mean much... and then they don't show these two deciding it to make it mean something or organically falling into a good sibling relationship... so they cut off the dynamic at the knees. You'll be shit on if you try to go off script and explore a more romantic angle because "ew they're rElAtEd" (ignoring all the previously stated flaws in that argument), there's nothing in canon that helps you figure out how friendly they even truly are so good luck building something canon compliant and they just generally don't seem to even give a shit about this dynamic at all so without dipping into other adaptations/AUs it can be hard to find something to even SAY about them.
Like I'd love to see Rogue and Kurt engage like, finding out what the Mystique Reveal means to them and how they see each other. I'd love to see them becoming friends and then family. I'd love to see them making that CHOICE. Because really in this context it's a CHOICE. She's not his adoptive sister, Amanda is. She's not his bio sister either in 616, that idea got shot down early on. She's a girl his bio mom who is a stranger to him raised an ocean away while he was raised in a loving home with siblings he adores. They met when she was a villain, he vehemently disliked her until she almost died saving someone's life then he tried to at least be civil and friendly. He finds out Mystique is his bio mother and asks Rogue about her but at the end of the day feels no real connection to Mystique or her life. His mother is Margali. The circus was his family. He cares about Mystique, Irene and Rogue because he's a decent human being but like, not in the same amount or extent as his adoptive family.
You can't have a scene of him flirting, even jokingly, with her in the 80s then think a 1993 mom reveal some how totally erases that vibe. Especially when you then put like no effort into exploring that GOLDMINE OF A PLOT THREAD. They've got so few non-combat just hanging out and engaging in character development interactions in 616 canon I can count them on my hands. At this point you could spin a wheel and decide to give them any relationship dynamic and it could genuinely work because there's no real content of them in comics to use contest it.
Like at her wedding they bring up that he's her brother again. That shouldn't be something we have a "turn to the camera and remind the audience" moment about. That should be as "well duh" to me as Bobby being her best man or Scott and Alex being brothers. It's not. It's just not. Their connection is just a factoid at this point and I hate it. You can't close off all these other potential dynamics for them (romantic/enemies/rivals/shitty roommates/etc whatever) by making them connected via Mystique, having an line every like, 10 years that reminds us they're "siblings" (are they tho? are they really? is that how this works?) and kinda vaguely imply they don't hate each other which is really just riding on the fact that pretty much ALL the X-Men like Kurt and we the audience like both of them and then GIVE US NOTHING WITH THAT STATED DYNAMIC!
MORE TIME AND EFFORT WAS PUT INTO MAKING NATE GREY SEE MADYLENE PRYOR AS HIS MOTHER OVER JEAN THAN HAS EVER BEEN PUT INTO MAKING ROGUE AND KURT FEEL LIKE THEY'RE EVEN FRIENDS LET ALONE SIBLINGS AND I'M VERY MAD ABOUT IT!!!! EITHER GIVE ME WHAT I WANT OR CUT THE REINS AT LET ME DO WHATEVER!!!
fsdkjghksdl so i just get VERY heated about this it's a pet peeve of mine.
#answered#meta#i have similar issues with the rogue and storm 'friendship' given that storm NEVER APOLOGIZED for saying ROGUE DESERVED TO DIE#WHILE LEADING THE XTEAM IN AUSTRALIA!!!#OR HOW SHE BLEW OFF ROGUES WORRIES OVER HER POWERS POST-ANTARCTICA AND IMMEDIATELY ACCUSED HER OF AN ATTACK ON A FELLOW XMEN THE SAME DAY#USING THE INFO ROGUE HAD GIVEN HER THAT MORNING IN CONFIDENCE AGAINST HER!!!!#but yeah sure they're FrIeNdS and storm has anna marie privileges#as tho that isn't borderline rogue's dead name and only used consistently for YEARS by people like her MOTHERS or her LOVERS#WE DON'T NEED TO SEE PEOPLE ENGAGE OR GROW ON SCREEN IT'S FINE!!!!!

Family Matters
I have been meaning to rant about the focus BNHA puts on families and how theyâre so important to the start of a personâs life and development. Itâs the way that BNHA puts such a heavy emphasis on family, and the impact it has on you, and how everything could easily go seriously, seriously wrong if your family dynamic is not developed properly or handled with care.
One of the recurring focuses in BNHA is family, and itâs mostly explored through the LOV trio than anyone else. It shows how some broken families can be mended, repaired, and reunited, and how others simply cannot. Both of these are explored through Shigaraki, Touya, and Toga.
Shigaraki reflecting on his family before the war shows us that he never did let go of the attachment he had to them. Not that he would, since they are his family. But he was never able to grieve in any normal way whatsoever:
And as a result, there are a lot of unaddressed feelings that he hasnât been able to move on from. Which is shown to us when he manifests them in his conscience in the AFO void/dreamscape thing. And through this attempt to give himself closure by reliving the final moments he had with his family, he decides that enough is enough, that he doesnât want to be rejected for who he is anymore:
This shows that, hey, maybe heâs done dwelling on these feelings? Now he can move forward with his plan of destruction without anything holding him back. Except, it turns out that he isnât done dwelling:
Even 16 years after theyâre long dead, his family is still grabbing him all over his body, pulling him back, keeping him from moving on. Never having gotten that acceptance he needed in his home has resulted in him practically begging for it from the current world theyâre in. Even after heâs seemingly rejected the idea of ever being accepted, heâs still there, asking for this acceptance:
So now weâre at a point where, only when heâs given what his family wasnât able to give him (understanding and acceptance), will he be able to break that hold AFO has on him and move forward to his salvation. Saving Shigaraki isnât just about breaking the possession, and itâs not about making him forget his family. Itâs about making him realize that his dream of destroying everything is not going to bring him any relief, and that there is hope for him to feel good again if heâs given what he needs, given what he never got when he was little Tenko.
Now Touya. Touya reflecting on his family after the war shows us the way he grew up, and the emotional harm inflicted on him before he âdiedâ. But the more telling parts of Touyaâs reflection are when heâs brought to tears (of blood) thinking about his family living on without him, for the second time:
But those chapters are split between his and his parentsâ POV. We know that Touya loved his family, pretty much up until he left. And, we know that he still does love all of them except Endeavor. For whom Touyaâs love grew into a deep hatred and pain that Touya doesnât want to continue living with.
Touya loves his family, his family that is very much alive. And his family loves him too. But Touya rejected the idea of returning to them 10 years ago, which only resulted in the state that he is in now: burns spreading, emotionally isolated from other people, still living in a state of constant anger, and now being somewhat forced to cooperate under someone he didnât agree to work for.
Touya being estranged from his siblings for so long only contributed to his spiraling. Unlike Shigaraki, whose family will never be able to give him what he needed as a child, Touyaâs family is alive and CAN give him what he needed, and still needs now.
Then we have Toga. We finally saw her reflect on her family and how it brought her to where she is now:
Unlike Touyaâs and Shigarakiâs families, Togaâs family rejected her entire existence. There was rejection and ostracization in both the Todoroki and Shimura families, but there was also unconditional love present in both of those homes. But Toga?
It doesnât look like there was any, at any point.
We donât know what Togaâs relationships with her (assumed) siblings were like, but we knew about her parents giving up on her at the ripe old age of 3. Which tells us that before their kid could even really form a personality or an identity of any kind, they stopped viewing Himiko as their child and instead as a burden.
Just like with Tenko and Touya, it took a tragic event for Toga to end up separated from her family, just reinforcing that Toga DID spend the vast majority of her life with her family. In fact, Togaâs separation from her family is fairly new. Sure, she adjusted quickly, but we now know that she never fully moved on from it. If she had fully moved on, their words wouldnât be echoing for her:
I think itâs safe to say that Toga going back to her family is just not in the cards. Her separation from them is still fresh, it didnât even take a full two years for them to get rid of her stuff, and on top of thatâthey had given up on her before she could even fully form her own thoughts. The physical separation is new, but the emotional separation had been there for a long time.
So looking at these three families, we have two different endgames set up.
For Shigaraki itâs obvious. His family is gone. They are physically separated by life and death, and nothing will ever change that. For Toga, her family is physically there, alive. But the emotional separation is too deep, and has existed for all but 3 years of Togaâs lifetime. While it is physically possible for them to be reunited, emotionally, it isnât.
And then we have Touya. Touya has what Shigaraki doesnât. A living family. Touya has what Toga doesnât. A family who wants him back, a mother who wants to mend her mistakes, a brother who wants to know him for the first time, siblings who want to make up for lost time.
BNHA doesnât undermine the importance of family. It shows that certain circumstances truly can separate and break a family for good (Shigaraki and Toga). But it also shows that families can persevere through even the most trying times, even when things seem hopeless and like theyâll never be whole or complete again (Touya).
Thatâs why it makes the most sense for Touyaâs ending to be to return home. Touya has what Shigaraki and Toga donât have, but do/did want. A living family, a family that wants him back. And the best ending for Shigaraki and Toga is to find the acceptance they needed from their families, in the people around them (heroes and villains alike) since it will never be found in their families.

So, I've read Aaron Ehaszâs ideas for Azulaâs redemption arc if there was a possibility for one but sadly there wasn't, and I like it, partially though. Why? Because there is only one tiny, backfiring and nagging problem with it: Zuko as Iroh 2.0 for Azula.
Like, ok, if there were another season of Avatar for Azula to be redeemed, I would love to see her trying to fix her relationship with Zuko and understand his POV while he does the same for her even with all the angsty fights, and a lot of trauma to recover from.
What I don't think it's a good idea is to have Zuko in the position of a second Iroh to help Azula recover and make amends with the people she has hurt. And I have a good explanation for this.
Number 1: Zuko is not emotionally ready
Look, he might have redeemed himself but the job of helping his sister whom he has a deeply complex and chaotic relationship is beyond his league. Heck, it was bad and irresponsible enough from the writers to free Iroh from any responsibility and put Zuko on the throne even though he has spent the majority of his time chasing Aang and then surviving in the Earth Kingdom which neglected his studies about politics and militia of the Fire Nation.
And don't make me start with the emotional baggage and other stuff he really needs to work on. There is a lot he still must take care of himself before having such a responsibility as the âredemption pathâ for Azula.
Besides, for him to be ready what Zuko needs is some time for himself to figure out who he is and what he wants. What's his purpose or the choices he has? The same goes for Azula. They need time and space for each other to find themselves after being abused and pitted against one another by Ozai for years. Because having your identity based on being superior to your sibling to not be punished or reach an unrealistic expectation is not healthy at all.
Number 2: Redemption arc or Plot Device arc?
In one of the ATLA posts I've made on Tumblr, I talked about how Azulaâs framing in the show didn't let her be a relatable character or be genuinely complex because the ATLA crew wanted her to be just a standard cool villain; therefore, her tragic backstory and complexities were just accessories that could enhance othersâ arca but not hers. Well, I think that post can be applied here because what would Azulaâs redemption be if given the chance to be made for a new season? A proper way to deepen Azulaâs character or just a way to put Zuko on a higher pedestal than the one he has?
I think the second option is the most plausible. Of course, it is speculation but with the show's framing of her character, her treatment by the hands of the comics, and how people have described her as irredeemable, evil, and sadistic while ignoring the environment, factors, and people that have made her this way, I doubt this redemption arc had been made for her character only and not to enlighten someone else.
And with how Ehasz has described it, my doubts have increased too: âAt the deepest moment in her own abyss, she would have found: Zukoâ, âZuko -patient, forgiving, and unconditionally lovingâ. Yep, this seems more like an attempt to turn Zuko into Iroh 2.0 and Azula into Zuko 2.0, and her redemption arc into Zukoâs redemption arc 2.0.
Number 3: Showing off Zukoâs questionable traits
âZuko -patient, forgiving, and unconditionally lovingâ, honestly, I don't know if Ehasz knows Zukoâs character at all and his dynamic with Azula from A to Z.
First, patient? Sure, Zuko has matured and it's normal to relapse in moments of stress but since when he is patient? He wanted to enter a storm in The Storm episode despite how dangerous it was and even fought one of his crew members when he scolded him for his recklessness. He attacked Aang for not training hard enough and not taking Ozai seriously even when Zuko didn't tell the Gaang about his fatherâs plans to burn the whole Earth Kingdom sooner. And let's not talk about how his character was handled in the comics.
Forgiving? This one is a bit difficult. I could just put that Zuko criticized Aangâs air nomads' beliefs about forgiveness and how forgiving the man that killed Kataraâs mother was the same as doing nothing but I also take into account that Zuko said to Aang that he was right about violence not being the answer Katara needed to heal.
Forgiveness and Zuko are very complicated. Zuko has all the right to not forgive Ozai for all the pain he put him through or Azula for the animosity between them, but it would be interesting if he forgave her to have a new chance at siblinghood or just to have his own chance at healing.
However, it's a hard question to answer if he is forgiving. Let's not forget that Zuko, as the Blue Spirit, attacked the man that humiliated Iroh when they became EK refugees. But there is also the fact that even after Azula attacked Iroh in The Chase, Zuko didn't tell him âUncle, we have to find Azula so we can avenge youâ, instead he said, âI know what you're going to say: she's my sister and I should be trying to get along with herâ. Now, according to this phrase, Zuko thinks Iroh has a better way to deal with Azula that doesn't involve violence even if he knows that if he doesn't improve his firebending, his chances against her will be slim. And because Iroh is the most amicable of the older fire brothers, Zuko trusts his judgment and experience about siblinghood.
Last but not least, unconditionally loving. That is very complicated to answer too because the only source of supposedly unconditional love was Ursa before she disappeared and then Iroh took her place but both favored Zuko over Azula for different reasons which isn't the best example for an impressionable child about how unconditional love is or should be.
Look, Iâm not saying that Zuko cannot be any of those things but it takes time and effort, and perhaps thatâs why Azulaâs redemption is important for Ehasz because it would give Zuko the chance to show forgiveness, patience, and unconditional love when it should be about Azula and how she becomes a healthier and better person instead of being the plot device to show off Zukoâs traits.
Number 4: If not Zuko, then who?
Azula has been failed by the adults of her family in so many ways. Ozai abused her by turning her into a soldier and weapon; Ursa favored Zuko over her because he was easier to deal with and Ursa couldnât find a common ground between them to understand her daughter; Iroh barely cared about her and then told Zuko to fight her two times even when the second one he had said earlier than if he fought Ozai it would feed the cycle of violence. Hypocrisy at its best, uh?
While Ursa is still hiding, I think the best option is Iroh as crazy as it is. Despite the bad blood between them, Azula and Iroh have a lot in common: they are the cunning, successful, and powerful prodigies of their fathers. Both were favored by Ozai and Azulon respectively. Both were affected negatively by the war: Azulaâs whole childhood was robbed by Ozai when he started to mold her into a weapon, and Iroh lost Lu Ten which broke his will to fight in the Ba Sing Se Siege. Both create their own firebending moves and are excellent fighters.
It would be great to see how Irohâs opinion of Azula gradually changes from negative to sorrowful and positive after understanding that she was also a victim of Ozaiâs machinations and that her talents were twisted and abused for his gain and not the crazy girl that needed to be taken down like some kind of final boss from a video game or rabid animal.
It would also be fun a comradeship and respect between two jaded prodigies of the FN royal family. He could tell Azula about his adventures in the Spirit World and what he learned from the other nations, his adventures in the Earth Kingdom with Zuko as refugees which could be emphasized by Zuko explaining how terrible the war had affected the people.
About Ursa, if the comics didn't exist and the discovery of where she was and what she has been doing since her disappearance had been handled much better, I bet she would be distraught that one of her children had ended up in an asylum and her mental state is in such disarray. It would be the start for Ursa to reach out to Azula to make up for her shortcomings as a mother and have a common ground between them, to form a solid and healthy mother-daughter relationship.
And while Iroh and Ursa would be responsible to take care of her emotionally, she could meet other people in the Fire Nation to help her see the error of her ways and the wrongness of the war.
Her friends Mai and Tai Lee could be part of the team if they meet again and reconcile so Azula doesn't have to travel only with Iroh and Ursa but also with people her age. And the Gaang can be of help for her redemption too, though it will be much more difficult after what happened in the catacombs of Ba Sing Se.
All in all, those are the reason why Zuko as Iroh 2.0 for Azulaâs redemption arc is a bad idea. I mean, he can be a part of her redemption arc, but if he is put on such a pedestal it would backfire for both of them. Better if she has a net of support and builds her own path post-war instead of being the copy-and-paste of Zukoâs redemption arc just to make him look better.

So what headcanons did you have to change thanks to the Journal?
I'm still working through everything but off the top of my head:
We know now that Sasha has siblings, a few step siblings from her Mom's long time boyfriend (and maybe a half-sibling) (by the phrasing Anne had for both of them moving on quickly kinda makes me wonder if they weren't cheating on each other and the other found out or something) and very likely a step-sibling or two from her Dad's remarriage. So at the very least I'm keeping the headcanon that Sasha's Dad had a son with his new wife when she was 16 and he and Sash are pretty close. Idk if I'll come up with names for her other siblings tho' (likely leave that for everyone else in the fandom).
Since Marcy moved to Massachusetts and not Connecticut, the headcanon that Marcy and Luz were classmates is changed but they're about roughly a 2-hour drive away from each other so its likely that they might've met at a local tri-state anime con (and then found out they're actually also friends online), so Marcy and Luz being friends after her move is still here just changed slightly. (also Luz being able to fly via her Palisman to visit Marcy depends on the ending on Owl House)
Originally headcanon'd that Terri (whom its great to have confirmed in ink and not just through interviews that they go by they/them) finds a way to contact Amphibia and makes that as a wedding present for the Trio but with how the journal ended it seems like its a 23rd Birthday present for Anne, however I headcanon that they only managed to open it enough to get something through and not a person, Anne then suggests they have someone build a portal generator on the other side, like two-sides of a bridge. So the Trio quickly write letters (and attach pics) and Terri takes them with a copy of the blueprints into the portal with a device that shoots off flares periodically. Eventually someone finds it and takes it to the Plantars (the device was addressed to "The Plantars, Wartwood, Frog Valley") and Polly looked at the blueprints and gathered a team and built it. By the time it was finished and ready and working, Terri gave them a hint at a surprise as a wedding gift for when the Trio got back from their honeymoon.
It's annoying we don't know Lady Olivia and Grime's last name but we can probably assume that Yunan's last name is Longclaw. According to the journal she seems to be ashamed of her cowardly father, so the headcanon that her parents were normal (compared to her) is out, so I'll try and figure out what the dynamic between Yunan and her parents are since it's likely Olivia would want to meet them before getting married.
According to the journal, Marcy was already a gamer before she and Anne became friends at age 3, so while Bee didn't introduce her to video games, he likely shared his favorite ones when Marcy would come to visit.
That's what I have so far. I'm still working through things and coming up with new ideas for comics that'll incorporate new headcanons and the like.

Here's a bunch of my headcanons for the main trio. It's either funny or edgy, no in between. Hope you enjoy!
Duck:
- unironically considers himself "not like other birds"
- his family are literally a bunch of normal ducks living in a pond with whom he constantly quarrels
- has been scammed on every single existing fraud. yes before each of them he said "i know all their tricks! i'm completely sure they won't fool me again!"
- neurodivergent vibes are STRONG
- gay and homophobic
- ignorant as fuck but a proud individual
- curious but at the same time really really stubborn. If he doesn't want to believe in something he completely closes eyes on any evidence until something undeniable (probably traumatic) shatters his perception in the end. this and his arrogace makes him really easy to manipulate
- if Yellow is Red's inner child, and Roy is his inner adult, I'd like to think that Duck is more like "friend he always wanted to have"
- haptophobic, even if he doesn't know about this yet (yes, this hc is entirely based on his and Steak interactions in dhmis 5)
- thinks that Red is the only one who truly understands him, to all creatures prefers to spend time with him. (even if by design)
- surely loves Yellow in his own way. Often tries to teach him, but it's not quite working out. (Fuck, I only now realised that his usual attitude to Yellow could be him mimicking his own family relationships)
- has no clue about how violent the world can be to him... (well soon he'll know, soon he'll know...đ˘)
- doesn't really like Roy, because he is too touchy
Red:
- his attitude is basically could be described as an adult living in a world created by a child
- at this point doesn't really take Yellow and Duck somewhat seriously, it's more like older brother and his younger siblings dynamic
- depression and a mid life crisis (even if i headcanon him being like 20)
- "yes, guys, like, everyone had that thing that you are constantly being stared at by some weird dude who always ruins the weather and you with your imaginary friends boy and duck need to stay at home again, right guys?" ..."you're fired"
- self esteem problems
- he and that guy from Swim And Sleep Like A Shark could well be the same person. like, both have red hair, like horses and have very similar pattern of speech. btw birthday on the same date. also i like to think about him as being a sort of early prototype of Red's character
- somewhat likes being the smartest person in the whole Clayhill, even if it could be annoying sometimes
- the chillest one because knows for sure that he is not in danger
- gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss
- at this point if he sees Roy anywhere near his house, he'll move to the forest without any warning
Yellow:
- he is definitely the most innocent of the bunch, but this totally doesn't mean that he is incapable of violence
- everyone is so mean to me..... đđ (but they are)
- animal lover, but the pets he allowed to bring home are usually really small, and die after like, a week. Duck and Red say that "it got homesick so it ran back to the forest". even if it's a fish.
- i like to think that he is sorta idolizes Duck and thinks he is the smartest person in the entire world (he's not)
- spends most of his time with him, because they both are really naive and always get dragged in some traumatic adventure. but unlike Duck he has an age excuse
- has A LOT of scarfs and hats. Duck's hobby is weaving so this things need to go somewhere. to this day no one knows what Yellow does with all of that
- has no pride at all. give him a candy and he will immediately forgive you, even if you violently slaughtered his pet rat in front of his very eyes and laughed about this in his face
- literally has no mother. she never existed in the first place. also he is technically older than his dad, because Roy appeared the last of them all
- very easily excitable. shake keys in front of him, and he will be happy for the whole day
- "where's my dad?"

@procret333-2 requested "necklace for jesper" on the character ask. to be completely honest I'm not entirely certain what that meant so I'm just gonna answer all the questions, 'cause one of them is bound to be what you're after (and it'll be fun):
So. Jesper.
Gay. For Stefan specifically. I do not take criticism.
Only child, has no idea who his father is. Independent. Lived with his mother until fourteen or so and then left, mostly to get away from her terrible taste in men. There are a few half-siblings scattered around Hallasholm of whom he is unaware.
Fingerless gloves. To be honest I'm not sure whether it's a headcanon or canon that he gets cold easily, but he's going to want his fingers free at all times. Y'know. Just in case.
Autumn. I just get the vibes.
Jefan, obviously. There's something about "practically inseparable" that gets to me.
I honestly haven't seen any other Jesper ships to hate! I'm going to go with Jesper/Hal, because their friendship dynamic is so awesome and weird it would be a shame to pare it back to "haha ship".
Ferret, as previous. Furetur, okay! Little thief! Also they be sneaky bastard beasts.
He's a decent singer and the best dancer among the Herons. (I must write a scene where this comes up.)
Trying a digital version!
HALLASHOLM UNDERGROUND HALLASHOLM UNDERGROUND I will never be normal about this. I have plotlines, playlists...
With Hal! It's fascinating. There's such a fun mix of "friend to banter with" and "authority figure" and "trust? this is fucking weird".
Blue-grey. Unobtrusive, hard to see in the dark and annoying in large amounts.
#brotherband#brotherband chronicles#jesper#this was fun#also people may try to fight me on this but i like blond jesper!#character ask

Fushiguro Megumi: the protector
One of the things that makes jjk very interesting is how Gege writes the characters in a way that freed them from a number of stereotypes usually found in shonen manga in relation to how their appearance are. And that makes the character in this manga feels more layered. One of the example is our deuteragonist himself, Fushiguro Megumi.Â
Fushiguro is one of characters that make you thought of certain stereotype - but as the story progresses and his character is explored more, he is actually different from the stereotype of dark brooding rival of the protagonist his appearance is based of.
On his first appearance, Fushiguro is shown to be someone serious, seemingly a stickler for rules and formality, as he speaks in honorifics to Gojo in the phone -- even if itâs him saying that he will punch Gojo. When he speaks to Gojo, thereâs a strange mix of formality and familiarity, which is a given considering their long history.
He even cites the law of jujutsu for the reasoning of Itadoriâs execution right after Sukuna incarnates even though Itadori eats the finger because he is also trying to save Fushiguro. However once Gojo appears and asks what he should do to Itadori, his answer is right on the opposite direction.Â
And from this point on, we know that he is never âjust a simple rivalâ.
1. Not even a rival
Itadori and Fushiguroâs dynamic is one of the focal point that drives the story of jjk, among others. Â
but whoâs to say that someone you save wonât kill anyone in the future?Â
Fushiguro and Itadori share the same fixation on saving people. While Itadori wants to give âproper deathâ, or save as many people as he can from curses, Fushiguro rather listens to his own conscience, where he want to give good people what they deserve. And this believe of his rooted from the âundeservingâ situation he feels is granted to his sister in this life. This different ideals made the two of them clash during Cursed womb arc, but they settles their difference pretty quickly out of respect for each other, and this connects the two of them closer than them to other characters.
For Fushiguro, Itadori has become someone as important as Tsumiki despite only knowing him for a short time - and likewise, Itadori also thought Fushiguro as important. Fushiguro, in addition, also feels that he bears the responsibility of keeping Itadori alive and shoulders the consequence of every action Itadori and Sukuna does, since Itadori consumed Sukuna to help him in the first place. That is the reason his first fight with Sukuna happens after all; him staying behind out of feeling responsible.
And this responsibility develop into the necessity to protect Itadori, both from literal harm (the Kyoto students trying to assassinate him) and from metaphorical one. Likewise, Itadori not telling Fushiguro what Sukuna told him is also to protect Fushiguro from the guilt that will consequently arise.Â
While there is a bit of rivalry, it doesnât become something that the two of them fixated on. It does feed on their growth, but this rivalry mostly takes a backseat - it will, when he lives in a world where everything, even the authority, is trying to kill his closest friend and someone he is trying hard to protect. Â
2. To die or not to die
Fushiguroâs nature as a protector is rooted in his personality. Because of his upbringing and precociousness, he has his own view of what he think to be âgoodâ and âbad' that is very personal to him.
Fushiguro has certain degree âsense of justiceâ based on his notion. During this flashback, he picks fight with the delinquents not because they attacks him personally and not because anyone asks him for help, but just because he thought that they are wrong in bullying their classmates.Â
At first he is not inclined to be a jujutsushi because saving people doesnât fit into that notion of his. The work of a jujutsushi is in its heart is to save people and itâs tailored for not only the one who has the ability, but also the compassion to do it. Something that is unthinkable for junior high Fushiguro.
Itâs Tsumikiâs curse that change Fushiguro. He is started to driven to save people like Tsumiki. And also, if there is someone that can solve the case of Tsumikiâs curse, it will be a jujutsushi. Â
He feels that a lot of people he thought to be âgoodâ given unfairness in life. Like his sister who was cursed and fallen into coma, and Itadori who ate Sukuna then received death penalty.
I will save people unequally!
His personal sense of justice drives Megumi to help and save them in his own brand of heroism stemmed from his ego of choosing whoâll he save and who wonât. âGood peopleâ affects Fushiguro deeply that out of respect for Itadori who had died, he does something that usually he doesnât do.Â
While he sees both his sister and Itadori to be the same good kind, he judges himself to be different from them and he doesnât care if he is ânot rightâ. He doesnât feel that he deserves the salvation as deserved by âgood peopleâ and this reflects mainly in his... um... suicidal, sacrificial tendency.Â
Every single time he is cornered in battle, he used to resort to summoning Makora - which essentially means he will die. He doesnât think that his death is matter at all for anyone else as long as his purpose in winning the fight is fulfilled - which actually not necessarily true.Â
Itâs a good thing that after his training with Gojo, Megumi starts to realize the importance of him not resorting to âwinning by dyingâ. This point in Shibuya actually marks a significant development of his character - even if he still summon Makora after.
3. Blood does not necessarily run thicker Â
One of the most surprising aspect of Fushiguro is how he readily discarded the identity that comes with his bloodline. A contrast from Kamo and a point that makes their clash during Goodwill event arc very interesting. For Kamo whose mother left him so she doesnât get in his way to be the family heir, the way Fushiguro easily deny his bloodline of course offends him highly -- itâs almost like Fushiguro does not care about his motherâs sacrifice.Â
Well, it is understandable that he deny his bloodline. Regardless that the tradition of the Three Great Families just reek of shit, Fushiguro never experiences normal blood-related family bond since he was born. Everyone who should be his family based on blood never give him the bond other people experience. His biological mother had died, his father left him (and died unknowingly), Tsumikiâs mother also left the siblings. The one who took care of him was Tsumiki and Gojo to an extent, both of whom has no blood relation to him. Gojo even bought him from the Zenâin. And the Zenâin who is supposed to be his blood-related family trade him off easily with money, so it is understandable if he does not feel a strong bond with his own bloodline.Â
This is ironically (but in a positive way) very contrast with Fushiguroâs  technique; Ten shadows jutsu. One of Zenâinâs most prized inherited technique is manifested by Fushiguro who deny his blood and passed down by his father who the family refused to acknowledge as one of their own. The technique that also made Fushiguro coveted by the head family that they readily forked over 10 million for him. Itâs a very ridiculous situation.  Â
4. Next âstrongest sorcererâ
The growth of a jujutsushi is never easy.Â
Fushiguroâs growth as a jujutsushi is a difficult matter, way more than Yuuji. Compared to Fushiguro who is already familiar with jujutsu from a very young age, Yuuji is like a child whose growth is still in exponential phase. Since his main weapon is his cursed technique, Fushiguroâs growth as the more settled jujutsushi in this case should mainly come from inside himself. But itâs been a rocky way for him.  Â
First, his mindset is working against his growth -- because he has Makora to rely on, he tends to summon it readily than try to explore his technique more. Then as fundamentally Fushiguro is someone compassionate, he puts cooperating and matching his level to people around him first -- which actually hindered his growth of ability, because his nature as jujutsushi is on the opposite side. Â
As a jujutsushi, Fushiguroâs nature is the same as Gojo and Sukuna; a lone wolf who is the strongest on combat when he is alone. Gojo even implied once that Megumiâs cursed technique has the potential to be on par -- even beat his.
With not one, but two strongest jujutsu users invested in Fushiguroâs growth, I think itâs not an overstatement to say that he will be an incredible jujutsushi in the future -- if his growth does not fail him. And going by the current story development, it is more required out of Megumi to be stronger than ever, both as the person that he is and as jujutsushi.  Â
5. The future is as uncertain as ever
Now that Gojo is gone, the burden Megumi shoulders will be exponentially rising. More than to stabilize Tokyo back, it is the responsibility that he always feel over of keeping Yuuji as Sukunaâs vessel alive that probably will demand a lot out of Megumi. In addition to losing Gojo and the waking of Tsumiki as one of the Brainâs victims, Megumi needs all the strength he can muster, literally and figuratively, to be able to survive the coming of near future -- even though ironically he is one that is readily dying anytime.Â

The relationships between the Adventure group and the 02 group
As much as it would sound romantic to group the older Adventure six and the younger 02 juniors into one huge âgroup of twelveâ all of the time, itâs undeniable that thereâs a boundary between them, especially since thereâs a different internal dynamic within each group as well -- of course, for important events or incidents like Diablomon Strikes Back, theyâre capable of getting together as a whole, and they hand off information and call on each other freely for support over the course of 02, but once we start getting into âsocial life relationshipsâ, things get a bit more complicated. Overall, we all know that the juniors adore and respect their seniors, and the seniors are happy to mentor and support their juniors, but the way each of the older Adventure six approaches the younger kids has an interesting variance from person to person!
Overall
The other sections of this post deal with how each of the â02 quartetâ (Daisuke, Miyako, Iori, and Ken, or in other words the four Tokyo Chosen Children introduced in 02) interacts with individual seniors, but in general it should be established that each of the Adventure and 02 groups is always comfortable calling in the other for backup or assistance if necessary. This is especially accentuated in 02 episode 46 (when Daisuke ropes Taichi and the others into helping them do a full-on stakeout of the Dark Seed kids all over Tokyo, which is a lot of work), and Diablomon Strikes Back (when the initial mission was very obviously intended to have the older kids at the forefront and the younger ones as backup, before things went south).
Itâs also indicated multiple times over the course of 02 that âsharing informationâ is a huge priority for everyone, especially with the D-Terminals in play that allow people to keep people in the loop about whatâs going on, so that backup can be called in at any time -- see how quickly information passes from the juniors to the seniors during the crisis in 02 episode 7, or how Takeru and Hikari constantly keep each other posted on the situation and their whereabouts in the first half of Hurricane Touchdown. (This is especially when you keep in mind the real-life context that, in 2000, it wasnât common yet for the average elementary school student to have a cell phone, so 02 deliberately inserted the D-Terminals into the lore so that this kind of communication could be possible, further tying into the overall franchise theme of the impact of technology on society.) There is no issue in 02 thatâs caused by lack of communication (at least, unless it involves someone being emotionally unable to communicate), because of how quickly, easily, and constantly everyone is kept in the loop.
Each group is a valuable resource for backup in any situation, and both groups have a clear and obvious sentiment of âwanting to help as much as they canâ and ânot wanting to be uselessâ; the Adventure seniors constantly express frustration over the course of the first half of 02 that they canât do more, and do their best to provide as much support as they can within the restraints of the situation. Once evolutionary restrictions are lifted in the final quarter of the series and everyone goes on winter break, the older Adventure seniors start making a significantly larger number of appearances and directly getting involved without even needing to be asked; since everyone clearly wants to help each other out, there's no reason to refrain from seeking all of the help one can get. By the time of Kizuna, Daisuke (and, if the storyboards are to be believed, Ken too) is still on Koushirouâs call list even if heâs not present for that single incident, and Yamato loops them in to help scout on Menoa in New York since theyâre in the right place in the right time.
This is especially in the case of Koushirou, the teamâs resident analyst, who can only do his analyses if he has all of the information he can possibly get; since the 02 kids can do certain things that he or the others canât, he often asks them to do favors for him or provide him with info (such as borrowing Miyakoâs D-3 in 02 episode 4, or having Daisuke test out opening a gate at the Yagami residence in 02 episode 17, or picking Kenâs brain in 02 episode 33) so that he has more to work with. It is generally advantageous for Koushirou to get as much as he can on the table and make use of, and since he has an important role in 02 as a personnel manager and team organizer, itâs in his best interest to use the 02 group as guinea pigs make extensive use of their own abilities, as much as he can.
With Daisuke
Daisuke is a very deferential person in general, so him treating his elders with utmost respect and deferring to them is kind of like saying water is wet, but there are some relationships in particular that stand out!
Daisuke being Taichiâs soccer junior and âinheritorâ of both his Crest of Courage and his goggles is of course one of the most iconic and well-known parts of 02, but itâs interesting to see how Taichi treats Daisuke in return. While itâs unclear if Taichi knew him as anything but yet another of his soccer juniors prior to the events of 02, thereâs a lot to be said about how Taichi hands over his goggles without hesitation -- as much as we as the audience associate this with âleadershipâ, the 02 group doesnât actually have a leader from an in-story perspective, and, in-universe, Taichi gave him his own goggles on account of the fact that Daisuke was a ânew Chosen Childâ...and also the fact Daisuke had just broken his own and he presumably felt bad for him. (How much Taichi was consciously aware that Daisuke was doing it specifically to imitate him will be left to your imagination, because Daisuke never actually vocalizes this to his face.)
Thatâs a pretty big deal of a thing to do, given that even if you donât necessarily believe thereâs a huge sentimental backstory behind those goggles, Taichi took off an item heâd been wearing for at least seven years and just handed them over! So in other words, Taichi really did believe in Daisukeâs potential enough to entrust him with something this important.
We also see Taichi come to watch Daisukeâs game against the Tamachi team in 02 episode 8, and it should be pointed out that Taichi, being from Odaiba Middle School, had no practical reason to be at this game -- as far as the kids knew at the time, Ken had no connection to any of the Digital World incidents, and it was just a game that they all attended to give Daisuke their moral support, and so Taichi was mainly just here to watch how his junior would do in such an important match and give him advice. (Although, as Daisuke points out later in the episode, heâs pretty strict, too.)
Eight years later in Kizuna, in a scene where itâs established that Taichi is drifting enough from of the others to the point Yamato has to update him on them (Sora and Takeru), Taichi still seems to be roughly aware of whatâs going on with Daisuke, despite neither of them playing soccer anymore -- and, of course, Daisuke seems to have always had utmost faith in him. (Also, Daisuke seems to have returned the goggles; weâll leave to the imagination what might have led to that.)
Some interesting history about Daisukeâs relationship with the soccer club members: as per 02 episode 2, he was already at least roughly acquainted with Sora prior to her switching her sport to tennis, and, if the Adventure novels are to be believed, he was apparently already a member at the time of Adventure in 1999 (likely as an âunofficial memberâ, given that he would have been too young to formally enroll in it until Taichi had already graduated). If this is true, this would make him likely to be roughly acquainted with Koushirou as well. He was, at the very least, also around to overhear Taichi discussing the Digimon (although we donât actually have all that much evidence that anyone was working that hard to keep it a secret).
According to Spring 2003, Daisuke is said to have picked up his goggles in imitation of âthe person wearing gogglesâ whom he witnessed from afar during the Odaiba fog incident three years prior, not necessarily Taichi as his soccer club senior -- meaning that he may not have immediately recognized that they were the same person (although that certainly begs the question of how many people in Odaiba wear goggles; given that Daisuke seemed to just have a pair lying around at home, perhaps this is a normal fashion statement?). Taichi is portrayed as being much better at soccer than Daisuke is (Taichi was already a soccer captain in his fifth year while Daisuke didnât even become a regular until his sixth), and so learning that theyâre the same person at some point presumably solidified Daisukeâs personal image of Taichi as an absolutely incredible senior to look up to.
Daisuke infamously starts off on a bad note with Yamato in 02 episode 4 -- he insults an older sibling, something Yamato takes very personally, and itâs a bad mix of Daisukeâs abrasive demeanor and Yamatoâs emotional passion -- but by the time of 02 episode 11, it all seems to be water under the bridge as Yamato treats Daisuke very endearingly after watching the process of him earning the Digimental of Friendship. (While itâs not stated in words, one might imagine that Yamato also became a lot more forgiving of Daisuke not being very respectful of Jun after personally witnessing how much of a handful she could be in 02 episode 7.) And, as Daisukeâs technically the inheritor of his Crest of Friendship, itâs interesting to point out that Daisuke arguably shares as many of Yamatoâs personality traits as Taichi; heâs an intensely emotional person (far more so than Taichi is), and has somewhat of an awkward way of expressing himself.
Yamato is also the Adventure group member who maintains contact with the 02 quartet over the course of Kizuna, and with Daisuke as the main representative calling back, he naturally goes straight into âhappy puppy modeâ the moment one of his seniors calls to ask him a favor. The novel refers to the 02 group as âreliable juniors they can count onâ (which we can imagine reflects Yamatoâs mindset at this point), and he also makes sure to check on whether the 02 group hasnât also been subject to the ring of light issue, out of curiosity but also worry.
While itâs less immediately apparent, Daisuke also forms a recurring relationship with Mimi. Interestingly, most of their interactions have to do with Mimiâs location in the US, with Mimi teasing him in an email in Hurricane Touchdown and inviting him to come over, Daisuke helping Mimi and Michael out in 02 episode 40, and Mimi getting a lot of mileage and fun out of teasing him in The Door to Summer (this trip is implied to at least partially have been planned with meeting Mimi in mind; perhaps Daisuke was following up on that email one year prior). All of this happening with no translator; one might say that Daisuke seems to be good at befriending Americans in New York, which is interesting when you consider that his English is implied to be reasonably good, and the fact he eventually opens his ramen shop in New York...
Both he and Mimi are pretty like-minded overall, being very pure-hearted people who love supporting others and are never condescending or consciously rude to others, so itâs easy to see why theyâd get along.
With Miyako
Rather famously, Koushirou was Miyakoâs computer club senior prior to the events of 02, and she still looks up to him and adores him (she even goes out of her way to bring souvenir yatsuhashi from Kyoto for him in 02 episode 34). Koushirouâs handling of her is rather professional -- he calls her âMiyako-kunâ -- but this is, in general, more of a symptom of the fact that Koushirou isnât exactly the kind of person who shows open affection for anyone, and heâs still dealing with the fact that he used to compulsively push people away, so being able to talk to anyone neutrally like this is already kind of a big step.
This is especially because heâs got a pretty huge investment in the kids in general -- heâs one of the most visible of the seniors in 02, and while part of it is also because of his specialty in computers and his inquisitive personality driving him to take a very direct role in things, he also rails at the kids in worry in 02 episode 7 and continues to support the kids with actual support, providing them things they might find helpful or useful. So, in effect, itâs just that Koushirou has his own ways of showing support for his juniors, especially since his character arc has heavily to do with developing a skill in coordinating others.
Miyako continues working in the computer club under Koushirou even after entering middle school, and, eight years later in Kizuna, it seems that Koushirou is actively maintaining contact with Miyako (in the opening, heâs the one directly shown initiating contact via email), since sheâs personally helping him with Chosen Child community management. Thereâs no computer club anymore and the group isnât necessarily working as a cohesive group all of the time either, so this is something theyâre actively involved in together...and Miyako is clearly comfortable enough to dump work that she doesnât want to do on him. (He doesnât seem to mind that much.)
Miyako first meets Mimi in 02 episode 6 and immediately latches onto her without hesitation, to the point of fantasizing about their relationship and labeling her âMimi-oneesamaâ (big sister Mimi) thereafter. (Note that she only does this when itâs a very casual or playful situation, since 02 episode 14 later establishes that sheâll go back to the usual âMimi-sanâ when things get more serious or her mood is worse.) Mimi answers to Miyakoâs affection easily, given their similar temperaments, and they get along swimmingly.
We get a little more insight as to Miyakoâs feelings on Mimi in 02 episode 14, where Miyako spends the duration of it negatively comparing her own behavior and personality to Mimi's kinder and more mature way of handling things, implying that she sees Mimi as an example to follow that she sees herself as not sufficiently reaching. Notably, in 02 episode 25, when Mimi takes charge and uses Miyakoâs D-Terminal to request Kenâs help, Miyako doesnât protest at all; it of course wasnât helped by the fact Miyako herself was tussling with mixed feelings on Ken, but itâs worth pointing out that, after all of the vehement verbal arguing about the issue, Miyako respects Mimiâs decision enough to not protest.
Miyako also bonds a bit with Sora, both during her initial process of receiving her first Digimental in 02 episode 2, and during them working together in 02 episode 42. Miyako doesnât seem to put her on as much of a pedestal as Mimi, but still very much defers to and respects her stance, and Sora is happy to indulge around and bond with her (note how casually she carries herself around Miyako).
While we donât see them interact much in the series proper, Miyako reveals in 02 episode 29 that she does sound engineering work for Yamatoâs band (in conjunction with Koushirou), which she continues doing after entering middle school in Spring 2003 -- although it seems sheâs having a hard time getting him (and everyone else) to embrace techno.
With Iori
Among the Adventure seniors, Ioriâs most notable relationship is with Jou, which is pretty interesting on its face given that this is the largest possible age gap among any two from this group (Iori is 9, Jou 15). Yet the two are put together in major situations no less than three times -- 02 episodes 5, 16, and 41 -- and with the first two depicting Jou as having a major role in mentoring Iori, in regards to the importance of personal choice and responsibility in being a Chosen Child (02 episode 5), and the conflict between moral principles and practicality (02 episode 16). A lot of the gist of Jouâs and Ioriâs character arcs and dispositions are quite similar -- Jou himself struggled with trying to adhere to arbitrary standards without regard to practicality back in Adventure, and itâs because of this that he can figure out Ioriâs mentality and reach out to him in a way he understands. For Iori, being a polite and respectful person in general, itâs only natural to expect that he would take very well to Jou being an admirable and honest model citizen.
Iori also receives his initial Digimental consultation from Koushirou in 02 episode 3, and, like with how Daisuke and Miyako also have some degree of personality traits relevant to the characters they inherit their Crests from, Iori also has some characteristics that evoke Koushirou as well, most prominently his tendency towards politeness and deference (albeit for different reasons). While they donât end up following similar paths for the rest of the series due to Koushirouâs âcuriosityâ being more about intellectual knowledge and Ioriâs âcuriosityâ being more about human behavior and psychology, Koushirou does correctly identify Iori as having the potential for that kind of inquisitiveness in said episode long before the relevant character arc clearly sets in, allowing Iori to claim the Digimental of Knowledge.
With Ken
Due to the late position of when heâd joined the team and the even later position in which everyone came to like him, Ken isnât shown necessarily bonding too deeply with many of the seniors, although itâs clear that they all came around for him in the end. That said, some of his limited interactions or interactions by proxy with the seniors end up fairly notable:
Ken has a long and extended chat with Koushirou in 02 episode 33, which is interesting because itâs a point in time when not even everyone in the 02 group itself was particularly receptive to him yet (at the time Hikari and Takeru were still maintaining silence on their stance on him, and Iori still ironing out a lot of complicated feelings about his presence). Yet Koushirou has no qualms whatsoever approaching him and picking his brain about what he knows, since Ken, as a hitherto unknown factor with a lot of background information that Koushirou could make extensive use of, has a lot to offer him. That said, heâs not just using Ken as a resource for intellectual purposes; Koushirou offers him emotional goodwill in his own way, hearing about how Oikawa had targeted Ken and even lamenting that it would have been better if the older kids had reached out to him first.
During 02 episode 25, Mimi makes an active bid to reach out to Ken when Golemon is about to destroy the dam, in the midst of everyone having an argument over whether to allow him to help (and not only that, sheâs vehement about doing so). Recall that Mimi is forgiving to a fault, allowing herself to get beaten up by Digitamamon in 02 episode 14 and refusing to give up on him despite knowing he was actively brainwashed -- so it stands to reason that sheâs actually one of the most receptive to Ken, even moreso than the more emotionally overwhelmed Miyako, and offering him a chance to join in (sheâs never really been depicted as the type to hold grudges).
During Ioriâs consultation of him in 02 episode 35, Yamato makes a remark regarding Ken pointing out that he and Takeru have technically gone through the same experience in witnessing the death of a partner, which means heâs actually willing to cast Ken in a sympathetic light at this point! Once Ken has integrated more smoothly with the others, Yamato and Ken work together in 02 episode 42, and they get along swimmingly with zero discomfort at all (not only that, Yamatoâs dropped the honorific, going from 02 episode 35â˛s âIchijouji-kunâ to the more casual âIchijoujiâ). Not bad!

Benzaiten Steel and the Fragility of Perception
or: reasons why setting boundaries is important #1283
Iâve figured out a reason why Benzaiten Steel stayed with his mother instead of doing the âsensibleâ thing and moving out. I think that itâs possible, too, that Juno has always been aware of the answer but, in the scope of Juno Steel and the Monsterâs Reflection, he isnât able to face it head-on because it contradicts his black/white, either/or sense of morality.
TL;DR: Despite Juno Steelâs unreliable narration we are able to see clearly the enmeshed relationship Benzaiten had with their mother Sarah and the ways in which that unhealthy family dynamic shaped Juno Steel as a person.
Sources: 50% speculation, 20% lit crit classes, 30% my psychology degree.Â
Junoâs perception of Ben is shallow and filtered through the limitations of human memory. We all know by now, too, that Junoâs an Unreliable Narratorâ˘. In light of this, we need to ask ourselves why it is that Juno remembers Ben as happy, supportive, and only ever gentle in the challenges he poses to Juno. Throughout the episode, Benâs memory is clearly acting as a comforting psychopomp: he ferries Juno through the metaphorical death of his old understanding of his mother (and also himself) and into a new way of thinking. He does this through persistent-but-kind questions, never telling Juno what to do or how to do it. This role could have been played by anyone in Junoâs life (Mick and Rita come to mind first) which makes it telling that Junoâs mind chose Ben to fill this role.
Junoâs version of Ben is cheerful, endlessly patient with Juno and Sarah, and above all he is compassionate. He acts as a mediating presence between Juno and Junoâs memory of Sarah and he doesnât ask a whole lot for himself. If this is Junoâs strongest memory/impression of Benâs behavior and perspective, then we can draw some conclusions about the roles they each played in the Steel family unit: Juno was antagonistic to Sarah and vice versa, and Ben was relegated to the role of mediator for the both of them.
Juno: Sheâs just evil. Ben: Thatâs a big word. Juno: âEvilâ? Ben: No, âJustâ.
We can see in this exchange that Ben is a vehicle for the compassion Juno needs to show not only to Sarah but to himself, too, in order to move on and evolve his understanding of his childhood traumas.Â
This is not necessarily an appropriate role for a sibling or a child to hold in a family unit.
In family psychology, one of the maladaptive relationship patterns that is discussed is enmeshment. Googling the term youâll find a lot of sensational results (e.g. âemotional incest syndromeâ) that arenât necessarily accurate in describing what this dysfunction looks like in the real world. This is in part because enmeshment can present many different ways. So, in order to proceed with this analysis of Benzaiten Steelâs relationship with his mom, I need to define enmeshment.Â
Enmeshment occurs when the normal boundaries of a parent-child relationship are dissolved and the parent becomes over-reliant on the child, requiring the child to cater to their emotional needs and to otherwise become a parent to the parent (or to themself and/or to other children in the family). This is easiest to spot when a parent confides in a child as if theyâre a best friend, disclosing details of their romantic life, expecting the child to give them advice on coping with work stress, and similar. Once enmeshment occurs, any kind of emotional shift in one member of the enmeshed household will reverberate to the others; self-regulation and discernment (e.g. figuring out which emotions originate in the parent and which ones originate in the child) becomes extremely difficult for the effected child and parent. When an enmeshed child becomes an enmeshed adult they often have issues with self-identity and interpersonal boundaries. For example, they may struggle to define themselves without external validation and expect others to be able to intuitively divine their emotions. After all, the enmeshed adult could do this with their parent and others easily due to hypervigilance cultivated by their parent and they may not understand that such was not the typical childhood experience. These adults are often individuals to whom the advice âdonât set yourself on fire to keep someone else warmâ is often relevant and disregarded. They may perceive their own needs as superfluous to othersâ-- and resent others as a consequence.
Another layer of complication is added when the parent in an enmeshed relationship is an addict, as Sarah Steel was. The enmeshed child often times becomes the physical caregiver to their parent as well and must cope with all the baggage loving an addict brings: the emotional rollercoaster of the parent trying to get clean or the reality of their neglecting or stealing from their child to support their habit or their simply being emotionally absent. Enmeshment leaves children with a lot of conflicting messages about their role in the family, how to conduct relationships, and how to define themself.
We only get an outside perspective on this enmeshment in the Steel family. Itâs clear in the text that Junoâs relationship with his mother was fraught. He jokes in The Case of the Murderous Mask that she didnât kill him but ânot for lack of tryingâ, implying that Benâs murder wasnât the first time Sarah Steel lashed out at Juno-- or thought she was lashing out at Juno but hurt Ben instead. During the entire tenure Junoâs trek through the underworld of his own trauma, Juno asks the specter of Benzaiten over and over, âWhy did you stay?â. This is a question that Juno himself canât answer because Ben, when he was alive, probably never gave him an answer that Juno found satisfactory. There are a few possibilities, which I can guess from experience, as to what the answer was:
Ben may never have been able to articulate that his relationship with their mother left him feeling responsible for her wellbeing.Â
Or, if he ever told Juno that, Juno may have simply brushed off this concern. After all, as far as Juno was concerned, Sarah was only ever just evil. To protect himself from his motherâs neglect and codependence, Juno shut down his own ability to perspective-take and think about the nuances that might inform a personâs addiction, mental illness, abusive behavior, etc.
It is likely that Ben thought either his mother needed him to survive or, alternatively, that he couldnât survive without her-- as if often the case with children who are enmeshed with their primary caregiver. It was natural and necessary for him, from this perspective, to stay. Enmeshment is a very real psychological trap.
It is often frustrating and hard as hell to love someone who is in an enmeshed relationship because, from the outside, the damage being done to them seems obvious. See: Junoâs assertion that Sarah was just evil. Juno is, even 19 years later, still angry about Sarah Steel and her failures as a parent and as a person. His thinking on this subject is very black-and-white. He positions Sarah as a Bad Guy in his discussions with Ben-the-psychopomp and the childhood cartoon slogan of âThe Good Guys Always Win!â is repeated ad nauseum throughout Junoâs underworld journey. This mode of thinking serves two purposes:
First, it illustrates the role Juno played in the household: he was opposed to Sarah in all things and Sarah did not require any compassion or enmeshment from Juno. Juno was, quite possibly, neglected in favor of Ben which would create a deep resentment⌠toward both Sarah and toward Ben. This family dynamic would reinforce Junoâs shallow moral reasoning and leave him with vague, unachievable ideals to strive for like âBe One of the Good Guysâ or âDonât Be Like Momâ -- ideals that he canât reach because he is a flawed human being and not a cartoon character, creating a feedback loop of resentment toward his mother and guilt about resenting Benzaiten. That guilt would further bolster Junoâs shallow memory of Ben as being infallibly patient, kind, loving, etc.Â
Second, Junoâs black/white moral reasoning is an in-text expression of the meaning behind Junoâs name. When âRex Glassâ points out that Juno is a goddess associated with protection, Juno immediately has a witty, bitter rejoinder ready about Juno-the-goddess killing her children. Juno was named for a deity who in some ways strongly resembles Sara Steel and he resents that he is literally being identified as his own mother. Juno-the-goddess has one hell of a temper, being the parallel to Romeâs Hera. Juno is not a goddess (detective) who forgives easily when she (he) knows that a child (Benzaiten Steel) has been harmed. This dichotomy of âvenerated protectorâ versus âvengeful punisherâ causes psychological tension for Juno that is only partially resolved in The Monsterâs Reflection. The tension is not fully resolved, however, because Juno never gets a clear answer for the question, âWhy did you stay?â
The answer is there but it is one that Juno doesnât like and so canât articulate: Ben is enmeshed with Sarah who named him, of all things, Benzaiten and that is why he stayed. Weâve already seen that names have intentional significance in the text. Benzaiten is hypothesized to be a syncretic deity between Hinduism and Buddhism, is a goddess primarily associated with water. Syncretic deities are fusions of similar deities from different religions/cultures; their existence is the result of compromise and perspective-taking and acceptance. Water, too, is forgiving in this way: it takes the shape of whatever container you pour it into... not unlike a child who is responsible for the emotional wellbeing of their entire family unit. Not unlike Benzaiten Steel.
Ben stayed with his mother because his relationship with his mother was enmeshed, leaving him little choice but to stay, and this ultimately led to tragedy. Sarah Steelâs failures as a parent are many and Juno still has a lot of baggage to unpack in that regard, especially where Ben is concerned. Itâs unlikely that weâll get the same kind of âspeedrunning therapyâ episode again but I know that The Penumbra is committed to a certain amount of psychological realism in its character arcs so I am confident in asserting that Juno Steel isnât finished. Recovery is a journey and heâs only taken the first steps.
