More xmenposting bec these thoughts won't leave my head.
---
Anyway, since I read the comic where Jean was in the hospital after being resurrected and Scott tried to quit from the X-Men after realizing that he wasn't sure if he could take the stress or the risks anymore, and then Prof X just fucking flipped at him and went on an "you ungrateful child" rant. And I remember being shocked and thinking, "woah, what the hell?"
So I've been thinking more about it, and I think in a way, Cyclops and Professor X are both very dependent on each other and sort of use each other as a crutch but in different ways.
So one of the things you can immediately notice about Scott is that in the O5 X-Men team, he is the one with the most obviously offensive (in the sense that it can be used to attack) power. What else can you use his optic beams for besides destroying stuff? Being an X-Men likely gives him a sense of purpose that he's doing good with his mutation and being an X-Men also grants him some sort of control over his powers. Maybe confidence that destruction isn't the only thing he's good for. That he can be a hero too.
On the other hand, I have Charles Xavier. Now I know that history is really shaky in X-Men, but say if I were to go about this a bit more realistically, it's kind of hard to believe that Charles looked at this sad and anxious child and went like, "yeah I'm going to make him the leader of my mutant superhero team." I'm kind of taking cues from Stan Lee's run in the Uncanny X-Men, but I always thought that Charles didn't run into Scott on purpose. I mean, yeah he was looking for students, but it's not like you'd think some 15 yr old kid would be perfect for a role as important as leading a group of people who you hope would change everyone's terrible opinion of mutants.
I was able to read some X-Men stuff leading into the 2000s where Cyclops died after being possessed by Apocalypse, and I really remember Cyclops being called Professor X's legacy or heir or something like that. In a way, Cyclops really was like Charles' son. I think Cyclops and Charles really did love each other like family. Even if they're not the best at showing it. I think that even if Charles hadn't initially sought out Cyclops to lead the X-Men, he had eventually come to rely on Cyclops as sort of like an extension of himself through which he could guide the X-Men on the field. Because, obviously Charles can't go on to the field with a wheelchair. Their dependence on each other was something that gradually happened and grew even worse as the X-Men grew bigger and got into bigger fights. But the thing is, Scott had a way out of it through Jean. And as far as I know, the Professor didn't have any negative reactions to the OG X-Men leaving for college or something (and during that time Scott stayed behind like an obedient son), but the moment Scott thinks of leaving the X-Men Charles gets upset?

Am I thinking to hard? I'm tired now. Maybe I'll write a fanfic about this later idk. I should read the comics properly someday instead of just randomly reading bits and pieces.
I'm out of thoughts, that's all for the xmenposting.
