🥏 TXF Fic Rec #10: "The Common Fate of All Things Rare" by Aloysia Virgata & Scarlet Baldy

Today’s fic has several of my favorite things in fics: the angst from the fallout in Never Again and the looming cancer arc in the background, well-done jealousy and UST, a lovely written and memorable OC, excellent prose, and clever lines.

It also boasts an impressive, meaty case file that has an ass-kicking profiler!Mulder and pathologist!Scully, intricate plotting, red herrings, twists, and turns like a bona fide mystery novel.

The story nestles itself nicely in the gap between the end scene of Never Again and the beginning of Memonto Mori. Oh, don’t miss the hilarious gag reel after the ending.

Past Haunts Part 2

The sound of the alarm wakes me up and I turn over, smacking toward the nuisance until finally my palm makes purchase and there is once again quiet in the room. Squinting an eye open, I look at the glowing numbers; 5:15 am. Ugh! Another early morning. I rub the back of my hands across my eyes, trying to wipe the sleep out of them. 

I had stayed up late again last night, calming my daughter from another nightmare. For a week now, she’s dreamed something was after her, a monster or a ghost. Damn, I could barely make out the words through her sobs and then when I ask her about them the next day she just shrugs and says it was just a nightmare. My beautiful, sweet, innocent daughter is being terrorized in her sleep and there is nothing I can do to help her. 

I roll out of bed and head to the bathroom to begin another day at the diner. Another 8 hours on my feet, being belittled and humiliated. All for a measly paycheck to buy food and pay bills. But it was a job and without a college education, it was about the only thing I could find.

College. Such a dream! But after the three positive pregnancy tests over Christmas break during my senior year of high school, college turned into an unattainable dream. All because of the new kid; the arrogant, egotistical boy in the brown leather coat.

Sam comes out of the hospital, still in his scrubs and jumps into the passenger seat of the Impala, startling Dean from his thoughts. 

“I think she’s telling the truth,” Sam says. “The way she talked about being there mentally but not physically – kind of sounds like demonic possession to me.”

Dean shakes his head slightly, getting his mind back on the case. “Kind of?“

"Well, she didn’t see any black smoke or smell sulfur." 

"Maybe it’s not a demon,” Dean suggests. “Kids can be vicious. You, of all people, should know that.”

“I mean, we’re already here. Might as well check out the school.”

“Right. The school,” Dean says eagerly, as he reaches to start the car.

“Why are you so jazzed to go back?” Sam asks, incredulously. “We went there what, a million years ago. I seriously doubt anyone we went to school with is still around.”

“I’m not. I just think it’s worth looking into,” Dean says as he turns the key and fires up the engine. “Truman High, Home of the Bombers,” he says and then mumbles to himself. “And bombshells.”

Driving toward the school, Dean looks over at Sam. “So what’s our cover? FBI? Homeland Security? Swedish exchange students?”

Sam lost the newspaper he had in his hand. “Don’t worry. I got an idea.”

“Okay. But I’m hungry. Can we stop for food first?”

Slowly opening the door, I look in on my daughter. She is sleeping peacefully now but it is time to wake her up. As much as I would rather let her sleep in and just skip school to rest up, I also know that she would throw a fit.

One thing about Whitney Deanna Quentin is she loves school. And she is smart, smarter than most 12-year-olds. Too smart for her own good sometimes.  But I am so proud of her. She is only in 7th grade but has been taking advanced placement classes at the high school, my old alma mater, Truman High. 

I approach her bed and place my hand on her shoulder.  “Whit, baby. Time to get up." 

Her eyes flutter open and, just like every day, as soon as those bright green orbs land on mine, it takes my breath away. They are exactly just like her father’s. Just like her hair, the same umber color as his; the freckles across the bridge of her nose and splattering across both cheekbones. Every day I look at my daughter brings up the memories of him, the boy who broke my heart when he climbed into that shiny black car and rode away, never to be seen or heard from again.

"I’m up,” Whitney yawned, as she sat up in the bed. “What time is it?”

“Six,” I tell her as I run a hand over her head. “I gave you an extra few minutes since we were up late. “Honey, do you want to talk about it? What you’re dreaming about?”

She looks up at me and smiles. “Nah, it’s okay mom. I know those things aren’t real. At least while I’m awake. Ghosts and monsters? Psh, just childish fears.” She shrugs me off as she stands and heads toward the bathroom. “I’ll be ready in 20.”

He’s able to sit up for the first time on a Thursday. Has been weaving in and out of consciousness for the better half of a week. Flanked by Margo on his left, Quentin on his right, and a revolving door of characters at his feet. Visitors who come and go and sometimes come back. Like Penny and Alice and Julia. Or who come once, stay for a few minutes, and then disappear to never return. Like Dean Fogg and Kady. Nothing more than courtesy drop by.

He doesn’t mind. Quentin squeezes his hand tight like he thinks he might, though, so he just nuzzles his cheek into Quentin’s shoulder and opts not to mention that he has all he needs right here. Pretends not to hear Margo’s judgement when she huffs out an amused breath. Squeezes her hand as if to say not now, Bambi.

They’re alive. They have time. Right now he just wants to stay like this. --

Or, the season 4 finale never happened, but Quentin and Eliot still manage to be disasters. Mostly Eliot.

Top Ten Favorite Fics I’ve Written

Inspired by a post/conversation with @imagineagreatadventure. :) 

Here are my top ten favorite fics that I’ve written. I’ve written 139 fics on ao3 so this was kind of difficult, but fun. :) And this is in order from oldest to newest. And unsurprisingly, most of these are Forever, because that’s the fandom I’ve written the most for. 

Under a cut because this got kind of long.

1. You Only Live Once (Forever)

Henry learns that Adam isn't the only one who shares his curse, and that not every immortal has the same disdain for modern pop culture.

This was my first Forever fic and it revolves around an OC immortal character. I don’t usually have OCs in my fics, so this was fun to play with. I love the OC’s dynamic with Henry and it was great to write. :)

2. Mingling Souls (Forever)

Henry goes traveling following Abe's death. But instead of simply running, he writes to Jo while he's gone.

If I’m remembering correctly, this is my first fic that I ever used a beta for, and it shows. It was a great experience writing it, but I’m also just really proud of how it turned out. With the exception of some exchange fics, I write what I want to read, and this is definitely an example of that. 

3. Cock and Bull (Forever)

Alcohol can make certain things clearer and some secrets easier to tell. Now if only the person listening actually believed it.

(Leaving in the middle to go do karaoke probably didn't help.)

I love this fic, it was so much fun to write. I’ve always wanted to write one with this format (a fic written in texts and social media posts), and while I would love to do one that’s a little longer, I’m really happy with the result. Also drunk Henry singing karaoke is just the best image. :)

4. I Will Not Let Thee Go (Forever)

As the knight in charge of her protection, Sir Henry has known Princess Abigail her entire life. Now she is trying to help him see that there could be something more to their relationship, and despite his true feelings, he can never give in.

Medieval AU

This will be the answer for a lot of these, but this was so much fun to write. It’s a totally sappy, ridiculous romance set in vaguely Medieval times and I just love it so much. It’s also based slightly on a relationship in one of my favorite fantasy series, The Elenium by David Eddings. 

5. For Those Who Love (Forever/Agent Carter crossover)

Peggy Carter meets Henry Morgan in 1938 when the SSR tries to create an army of immortal soldiers. An attempt to rid him of his curse goes awry, changing both of their lives.

I want to revisit this ‘verse at some point, there’s so much potential, especially with the friendship between Abigail and Peggy. I loved writing these characters together, and there’s so much more I want to explore, I just haven’t gotten around to it. 

6. Faithful Unto Death (Forever collab with @truthisademurelady)

Henry Morgan, New York emergency room doctor and father to his elderly son Abe, whom he raised from infancy as a single father, finds life changing when he meets Abigail. They have a whirlwind romance and are married, but it’s all cut short when she’s murdered and Henry is falsely convicted of the crime. Henry escapes before he’s imprisoned, and now a hunted fugitive, he sets out on a crusade to find out who killed Abigail. However, he has to contend with one Detective Martinez, who is on the case to bring him back to justice. A Forever/The Fugitive fusion AU.

This was written in collaboration and that collaboration is in part why this will always be one of my favorite fics. I’m super proud of it and what we were able to accomplish. It’s super plotty, which is not my forte, and it took several months to complete, but we did it, and I will always look back on this experience with fondness. 

7. Secrets and Lies (Miraculous Ladybug)

When a compromising photo of Ladybug and Adrien is released, they must put on a united front and figure out which truths are more important to protect--their identities or their reputations.

My favorite version of Adrien and Marinette’s relationship is aged up post love square, and writing them having to deal with this problem together as a team is why this is on the list. It also doesn’t hurt that it’s based on one of my favorite Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman episodes: 4x13 Sex, Lies, and Videotape

8. If You’re Not the One (Miraculous Ladybug)

Marinette/Chat Noir marriage of convenience

I am totally cheating with this entry, as it is a series, but I couldn’t pick just one fic out of the series, and really, it should have been one long fic, if long fic was a thing I was more capable of. :) Each of these fics followed quickly after the other and I wrote the main bulk of the series in just a couple of months, which I wasn’t expecting. I love this ‘verse and would love to revisit it again someday. 

9. All You Have to Do is Stay (Scarlet Pimpernel)

Percy is stuck at home after an injury.

I love writing Percy and Marguerite’s dynamic and this is just them being flirty and bantering and Percy being a little shit, so of course it made the list. :)

10. May Love Be Your Keeper (The Sound of Music)

There is a new addition to the Von Trapp Family.

I’m really happy with how this one turned out. It’s super fluffy baby fic and while I haven’t written a ton for The Sound of Music fandom, the family dynamic was super fun to write.
