“The greatest gift that you can give to others is the gift of unconditional love and acceptance” -Brian Tracy
I was eighteen when everything made sense for me.
I was on a school trip and I was going around town with my friends. The spring just hit the city and the petals fell from the trees onto the busy streets. Writing in my notebook about the different sights was hard to do because there was no surface to write neatly. How was my teacher expecting nice work? I just tried my best to write it as neatly as I could.
I saw a little shop that was selling little charms and I couldn’t stop myself. There was a cute cat that was holding a heart, they were all cute but one caught her eye. It was a hamster holding a heart that said LUCK in bold letters. She gently picked it up and the shopkeep smiled at me, “Interested?”
“Yes...how much?”
The older lady shook her head and took the charm, “No worries. It’s free for you.”
I was confused and tilted my head at her, “Free? Why-”
“It can give you luck in the future with your job, education, and more importantly love.”
“Love?”
The lady nodded her head and handed me a special red velvet bag with gold symbols, “Good luck.”
I waved goodbye to her and walked away with a little smile on my face. Love. I have always wanted love ever since my mom told me about her love story with my dad. It just sounded so perfect and beautiful. Who wouldn’t want to fall in love with their soulmate?
It was an empty street and it was pretty with the flowers covering the park cars. I put my hair in a low ponytail and continued to walk to the next place that was on the paper. I saw a light pink tissue on the street and I looked up to see an older woman with her bike. I picked up the tissue and ran towards her, “Excuse me, you dropped this.”
All of a sudden, she fell to the floor. I took off my sweater and placed it under her head. I looked around me and I saw an EpiPen. I picked it up and looked at her face to see it was swollen alongside her arm. She stared at the EpiPen and started to panic. She had never used an EpiPen, she’s only ever seen one on TV.
“Help!! Someone, help!!”
“What’s happening!?”
She looked up and saw an older man making his way to her. His eyes were kind and his smile made her feel okay. He kneeled next to her and pushed some hair behind the older lady, “It’s going to be okay. Seokjin! I need your help!”
She turned her head and her eyes widened when she saw a handsome man around her age. He glanced at her but didn’t say anything. She watched them help the lady but her eyes never left “Seokjin”. He was so handsome and he knew what he was doing. The older man turned to her and gave her a soft smile, “Call an ambulance okay. She’s going to be okay thanks to you.”
“Okay.”
I watched the older lady getting rolled behind the ambulance and I stared with nervousness. Just then I felt a hand on the top of my head and she looked up to see “Seokjin'' smiling at me, “You did great.”
“Th-Thank you...my name is L/N Y/N.”
He ruffled my hair and started to walk to the ambulance but he looked back at me, “My name is Seokjin. We’ll take her to the Map of Seoul Hospital where I’m a resident, she’s going to be okay.”
I nodded my head and watched him enter the ambulance with the older man. She continued to watch until the ambulance was out of her sight. I figured out what I wanted to do with my life and it was all thanks to Seokjin. I wanted to be a nurse to support Seokjin.
Y/N stared at the hospital with a smile on her face, it was actually happening. She spent five years working on becoming a nurse. The amount of tests she took and all the studying paid off for this moment. Her grip around her bag strap tightened and she nodded her head, “Let’s go..”
“Y/N!”
She turned around and she waved with excitement, “Kook!! Tae!!”
Jeon Jungkook and Kim Taehyung ran towards her with smiles on their faces. Jungkook and Taehyung are her closest friends from nursing school. They were her rock when things got hard and they supported her like how real brothers would. Jungkook and Taehyung were going to be a pediatric nurse while Y/N was going to become a cardiovascular nurse. There were only two people who wanted to be cardiovascular nurses in their nursing program, Y/N and an acquaintance named; Park Aria. Park Aria is an amazing student and she was always on top of her classes while Y/N was in the middle. Aria belonged in the medical field and it was clear.
“Are you ready?”
Y/N nodded her head as the three walked through the hospital doors, “I’ll try my best. We got this, right!?”
Jungkook nodded his head at her and looked at Taehyung, “I can’t wait to see the kids.”
Taehyung let out a small laugh and gently slapped Jungkook’s shoulder, “If you can handle blood.”
“Don’t tease him, blood is scary.”
Y/N went to change into her uniform and she stared at herself in the mirror. She wanted to cry but she already cried with her mom yesterday and she couldn’t ruin her uniform. She couldn’t let Seokjin see her tears. She smacked her cheeks gently and nodded her head, “Let’s do this.”
She walked towards the cardiology station and saw Aria there. She bit her lip and closed her eyes tightly. She was always awkward with Aria not because she didn’t like her but because Aria was always serious. She didn’t want her to be uncomfortable with her.
“Aria...good morning.”
Aria turned towards her and gave a small smile, “Good morning, Nurse L/N.”
Y/N’s face felt hot and she bowed her head, “So-Sorry, Nurse Park. Good morning, Nurse Park.”
Aria smiled at her and turned towards the staff. Y/N glanced at the staff and rushed to stand next to Aria. The staff smiled at them and bowed towards them, “Welcome to Cardiology. My name is Cho Chaewon and I’m the head nurse. I’m glad we have new faces.”
“I know the most here so any questions, ask me.”
Y/N turned her head to see a tan man with black glasses. He was chubby but it was like a teddy bear, he would give the best hugs, “My name is Min Minho.”
“My name is Lee Sonia.”
Aria bowed at the nurses and Y/N glanced at her. She bowed her head alongside Aria hoping she didn’t embarrass herself, “Thank you!”
When she stood back up, there were footsteps that echoed through the room. She turned her head and she saw Seokjin reading a paper on his clipboard. Everything around her went silent and she saw Seokjin. She saw him with a spotlight and his smile that she remembered. She clenched her chest gently as he left her sight. Minho glanced at her and smirked. He leaned towards Y/N, “Are you staring at the devil?”
“Eh? Devil?”
Sonia nodded her head with a frown, “He’s so handsome but he’s so ruthless.”
Y/N shook her head and glanced at Seokjin, “That can’t be...he was so nice to me that day.”
“WHAT!? Nice!?”
She jumped at the sudden yell and nodded her head at Minho, “Yeah...when I was eighteen I met him. He was kind to me.”
Minho shook his head with a chuckle, “Maybe you hit your head and assumed it was him being nice.”
Chaewon sighed and shook her head, “Now, Y/N and Aria...You guys will be heading to a lecture by the head doctor. After that, just make your way back to us and we’ll discuss teams.”
Going down the hallway felt surreal. Y/N overheard conversations that she read in her textbook, it was exciting. She continued to make her way but at the end of the hall, she saw Seokjin. He was talking to another doctor and she couldn’t help but smile. She made her way to him and watched the other doctor leave. This is my chance....
She stood in front of Seokjin and smiled at him, “Doctor Kim, I’m so excited to work with you. It’s nice to meet you again.”
The look he was giving, she couldn’t understand and she tilted her head, “Who are you?”
She blinked her eyes a couple of times and felt flustered, “I’m L/N Y/N...I met you five years ago and we helped save an older woman together....”
He raised her eyebrow and he continued to stare at her, “I have things to do...rookie, keep to yourself. No one likes to hear unwanted memories.”
Her mouth dropped and she stared at him with a shocked face, This can’t be the same person I fell in love with... “Huh?”
“Talking about the past or other stuff is a waste.”
She continued to stare at him with a shocked face and he looked back at her with an annoyed look, “Eh?”
“Get back to work, rookie.”
He walked away from her and she continued to stare at the absent spot. That can’t be him...he stole his identity. There’s no way that can-
“Y/N? Are you okay?”
She turned around and saw Jungkook looking at her with a concerned look. She pouted and shook her head, “I met an imposter.”
“What?”
“That can’t be Seokjin...The man I fell in love with. It’s the only logical reason.”
Jungkook nodded his head and let out a small laugh, “I’ll let you believe that.”
┊ ➶ 。˚ °┊
“Nurse L/N and Nurse Park, let me introduce you to the doctors of this unit.”
Y/N was still in a confused daze after her encounter with Seokjin. Even during the introduction in the main hall she wasn’t really listening. Five years later she wanted to meet him and have something blossom. Now the only thing that is blossoming is pure confusion and shock. Two feelings you don’t want to feel in a hospital.
“This is Doctor Jung.” Y/N turned to see a handsome tan man that had a heart smile. He looks very kind or he could be an imposter...
“This is the head doctor, Doctor Kim Hyeon, and his son Kim Seokjin.”
She quickly looked away when she saw those stern brown eyes, he looks like he hates me. After a minute, she looked back to see him staring at her still. She hated this feeling. She embarrassed herself in front of him and now she has to work with him. It was a headache but she wasn’t going to give up. She wouldn’t give up on him.
“Y/N-”
“Yes.”
Chaewon raised her eyebrow and let out a small laugh, “You don’t even know what I’m going to ask you.”
Y/N softly said sorry and bowed her head at the older woman. Embarrass myself again, come on Y/N.
“Y/N, you will be on Doctor Kim’s team.”
Y/N looked between the father and son duo. She was hoping it was with his father, it would be easier for her. “Which one?”
“Obviously mine. Stupid.”
Her eyes widened and looked at Seokjin who was shaking his head at her. She bit her lip and rubbed her arm gently, “Right…sorry.”
Doctor Hyeon laughed at this and shook his head, “Y/N, I appreciate your enthusiasm. It makes me happy to see the new generation excited to help.”
Y/N smiled at this and it was the first time today she felt truly happy, “Always excited to help, Doctor.”
She heard a scoff and glanced at Seokjin who was rolling his eyes. She didn’t let this get to her because she was telling the truth. She wanted to help everyone and make people’s lives easier. It was her duty as a nurse now.
Chaewon put the clipboard on her desk and she clapped her hands, “Okay, now let’s head towards our teams and help our patients.”
“Yes!”
Y/N was following Seokjin at a distance. Down the hall, everyone was glancing at him and she realized that everybody has a crush on him. He was handsome and he was the top doctor here, what’s not to like? He opened the door to the main doctor's office and she bowed to the other doctors before catching up with Seokjin. She quickly sat in the chair next to him as she continued to look over the clipboard as the sound of keys echoed through the empty room. She couldn’t look up from the gray board and the words before her gave her comfort (even if it was a diagnosis).
Seokjin sighed and turned towards her, “Shouldn’t you be assisting me and not just sitting there?”
She swallowed some spit and looked at him with nervous eyes, “Well, Doctor, you didn’t give me any assignment...”
“You’ve been reading the same paper for thirty minutes, shouldn’t you know what your assignment is?”
“Huh?” She glanced down at the paper and re-read it. Her eyes widened and realized that it was telling her about a patient. She looked up at Seokjin who was smirking at her with a raised eyebrow, “Well?”
She stood up from her seat and bowed at him, “I’ll be going.”
He watched her leave and he couldn’t help but let a small laugh escape. Hoseok glanced at him with curiosity and leaned towards him, “Did you just laugh?”
Seokjin turned towards him and rolled his eyes, “Do you have the report I needed this morning?”
“O-Oh, don’t change the subject.”
Y/N walked into the room and the frown she once had was replaced. She quickly made her way to Jungkook who was helping a little girl, “Kook~!”
Jungkook turned around and smiled at her, “Y/N, how was the rest of the morning?”
She frowned and shook her head, “I’m on his team...I’m happy but also sad.”
“Don’t let him bother you. Why are you here?”
“Ah.” She showed him the clipboard and then looked around the ward, “I’m looking for Seo Jimin.”
“Ah, Jimin. She’s sleeping right now. She just had her blood drawn.”
Y/N nodded her head and looked down at the little girl, “Hello, what’s your name?”
“Kimmy.”
“Pleasure to meet you Kimmy, I’m Nurse L/N.”
Kimmy tilted her head and pointed towards her, “Idiot.”
“Eh?” Kimmy started laughing and she ran from them leaving Y/N with a shocked face. She looked towards Jungkook and frowned, “Did I piss someone off? Why is everything going wrong today?”
Jungkook patted her back gently and offered her a gentle smile, “It’s okay Y/N. Things will get better.”
“Better my ass...”
“Don’t swear. Kids can hear.”
“Sorry...Can you show me Seo Jimin’s room?”
They walked down the hall and she smiled as the kids laughed through the empty halls. It was different from the cardio halls. In those halls, it felt like she had to be serious and she saw Taehyung talking to a nurse with a clipboard. He looked like he had been doing this for years. She smiled at this and continued to follow Jungkook.
“This is Seo Jimin’s room.”
Y/N nodded her head and peeked her head through the curtains to see the eleven-year-old she read about. Jimin looked up and gave her a small wave, “Are you my new nurse?”
“Kind of, my name is Y/N. I’m from Doctor Kim’s office.”
“Jinnie? He’s the greatest, isn’t he?”
Y/N let out a small laugh and nodded her head I thought he was, “He is. You're my first patient.”
“What kind of tests are you doing for me?”
Y/N sat on the bed gently and shook her head, “I’m here to meet you.” She looked around and saw hamster stickers on her wall with a familiar K-pop group, “You like Red Velvet?”
Jimin's grin widened and nodded her head, “I love Yeri but Wendy is my bias.”
“Ah, good choice. Is that why you have the hamsters?”
“It makes me think of my room at home. It makes me smile.”
Y/N smiled at this and nodded her head, “Music is the greatest pleasure one can have. It makes you feel happy with a simple note. It’s amazing.”
“Y/N, I hope I get to see you more. I don’t get to talk about my music.”
“You can always talk to me. We can talk about Red Velvet, every minute of the day.”
Jimin laughed and looked at Jungkook, “Do you like Red Velvet?”
“I’ve heard of them.”
Jimin pouted and leaned towards Y/N, “He’s boring. I like you.”
At least you like me, “I like you too.” Y/N glanced down at her watch and then back at Jimin with a frown, “I have to go but don’t be afraid to push the button or call for Mr. Boring.”
“I can still hear you.”
“Okay Nurse Y/N.”
Y/N and Jungkook walked outside and walked towards the front desk of the pediatrician department. She sighed and glanced at Jungkook, “She had purplish lips...I read that she’s been having shortness of breath more frequently. Any news on that?”
“Doctor Yu says that they're waiting for a test result to see her oxygen levels...if it’s good then she can be discharged with medication but they don't think that's going to happen.”
“I saw her calendar...she has Friday circled for her discharge. I hope everything turns out for her.”
Y/N was making her way back to the Seokjin’s office but was stopped. She looked up to see Doctor Jung giving her a friendly smile, “Are you the one who is trying to defeat the devil?”
She tilted her head and she was confused, “Devil?”
“Yeah, Jin.”
“O-Oh, Doctor Seokjin...wait-defeat?”
Hoseok let out a laugh and nodded his head, “I think you're the one that can defeat him and I'll help you.”
“I-I don’t want to defeat anyone!?”
“I’ll help you with him. I’ve known him since we were kids, I’ll get him to like you back.”
Y/N’s eyes widened and she looked around her frantically, “Don’t say that so loud...wait you’ll help me? Why?”
Hoseok leaned forward with their foreheads almost touching. This caused Y/N to be stiff at the sudden action, “I want to see him happy. Let’s defeat the devil.”
Y/N smiled at this and nodded her head, “O-Okay.~”
Hoseok looked around and glanced at the vending machine, “You want a protein bar?”
“Oh, that sounds good. Is it chocolate?”
“I think so, let’s go see together.”
“Okay.”
There was a pair of annoyed eyes on her back and maybe if she saw the eyes, she would melt under the brown irises.
“Nurse Y/N?”
“Mmm?”
Y/N was drawing Jimin’s blood as she was making her usual rounds, “Do you think I’ll be able to leave this week?”
Y/N's brain stopped working for a second and she swallowed her spit. She glanced at Jimin and gave her a gentle smile, “Hopefully. Medicine will always be there for you, no matter what.”
“I want to see my council friends.”
Y/N brought the needle to the vial and smiled at Jimin, “You're on the council?”
“Yeah, I’m the student body president.”
“Wow, that’s amazing. That means you can handle responsibility.”
Jimin nodded her head and just then the curtains were pushed to see a group of younger kids. They all looked at Jimin with a star in their eyes and Y/N couldn’t help but feel her heart swelled. “Unnie! Can you read this for me?”
Jimin smiled and looked at Y/N, “They always come with the new books.”
Y/N glances at the book and smiles, “Reading about Spider-man. He really is amazing, right?”
“Yeah!”
Taehyung entered the room and waved at Y/N, “Yo.”
“Hey, you. How’s everything?”
Taehyung shrugged his shoulders and frowned at her, “I haven’t seen you much. I missed you.”
Y/N rolled her eyes and let out a laugh. She stood up from her chair and picked up a little girl to sit next to Jimin. She rubbed the top of her head and walked towards Taehyung, “You never texted me back.”
“Y/N, you know I don’t have my phone.”
“But you have a laptop.”
“Be nice to me. I’ll make it up by buying you lunch.”
Y/N pursed her lips together and nodded her head, “I want crab.”
“Eh? It’s not in season though?”
“Then I guess you don’t want to make it up with me...”
Taehyung pouted and nodded his head, “Fine.”
“Nurse L/N is this what you do when I ask you to make your rounds?”
Y/N stiffened and looked behind Taehyung to see Seokjin glaring at her making her feel small. She bowed to him and as soon as she did, her papers slipped out of the folder and onto the ground. She closed her eyes and she already knew he was going to get mad at her. She slowly looked up and gave him a small smile, “Sorry...”
“Are you just going to look at me or pick up the papers?”
She nodded her head and picked up the papers in a rush. She pushed some hair back and handed him the folder, “This is the vitals for Choi Nari in room 782.”
“It’s room 781.”
She glanced down at her paper and then back at him with a sheepish smile, “Room 781...I just took Seo Jimin’s vitals.”
“Good job, you can draw blood. At least you can do that right.”
Seokjin walked past her and she frowned at this, so I messed up again. Taehyung shook his head and looked at Y/N with a disapproving look, “Out of all the men, you like him.”
She glared at Taehyung and then watched Seokjin talk to Jimin with the same softness he did when she was younger, “I like him because...because he’s the same person that was kind to me on that fateful day.”
“Idiot.”
“I heard you.”
“Nurse L/N are you going to help me or just keep talking?”
She bowed at Seokjin and then stuck her tongue at Taehyung, “Coming!”
Taehyung watched with a small smile on his face, “Idiot...
┊ ➶ 。˚ °┊
Hoseok pointed at the cafe and smiled at Y/N, “Every morning, Jin gets a mocha with a chocolate croissant.”
Y/N glances at the cafe in the entrance of the hospital and then back at him with a shocked look, “He likes sweets?”
Hoseok laughed while nodding his head, “Shocking?”
“He’s the opposite of sweet...salty...no maybe sour.”
“But today is Friday. He gets a white chocolate croissant.”
“Wow, he has a strong sweet tooth.”
Hoseok and Y/N enter the cafe and the smell of coffee hits her nose. She scrunched her nose at the smell because she wasn’t the biggest fan of coffee but then the smell of fresh pastry came. She smiled and looked into the small window, “They have fresh muffins... oh, they have strawberries!?”
Hoseok laughed, “The strawberries are really good.”
“Doctor Jung?”
Y/N turned around and saw Aria looking at her with a frown. Y/N waved at her but when it wasn’t returned she slowly put her hand down. Y/N bowed at her and offered an awkward smile, “Good morning Aria.”
“Good morning Nurse L/N. Doctor Jung, are you just coming in?”
Hoseok turned towards her and nodded his head, “Yeah, would you like a coffee?”
Aria let a smile appear and she shook her head, “You don’t have to...I appreciate it though.”
“You should let me treat you after yesterday. You were the only one that caught her block artery.”
“I had you to help me...I should be saying thank you, Doctor Jung.”
“Give yourself credit.”
Y/N glanced between the two and she heard wedding bells. She smiled and looked at Hoseok, “Aria is amazing. She was always on top of the classes.”
Hoseok smiled at this and nodded his head, “I can see that. You're talented. I’m glad you're on my team.”
“Doctor Jung...”
Y/N looked past Aria and she rushed to the entrance, “Good morning Doctor Kim.”
Seokjin rolled his eyes and moved past her, “You're blocking the entrance.”
Y/N moved away and bit her lip, “Sorry...”
“Ah, Jin.”
Seokjin looked up and saw Hoseok with a smile on his face, “What?”
“I was ordering Y/N a muffin. Would you like a coffee?”
Seokjin glanced at Y/N and was already looking at him with a smile, “Muffin?”
“What was that?”
Seokjin let out a small cough and shook his head, “I said nothing. I want nothing.”
Seokjin went to the cashier and ordered his usual but he glanced at the strawberry muffin. He looked over his shoulder to see Y/N talking to Hoseok with a wide smile on her face. He looked back at the cashier and nodded his head, “The muffin too, please.”
“I had to give her a quick stitch with Doctor Yu.”
“Y/N, you learn on the fly. Good work.”
“Thank you, Doctor Jung.” Just then a brown paper hit her face and she let out a small hmph. She looked to the side and saw Seokjin holding the said bag that hit her, “Eh?”
“It's a muffin. Take it.”
She looked at the bag and then at him with a wide smile, “You bought me a muffin? Is this going to be our thing on Fridays?”
Seokjin rolled his eyes and looked at Hoseok, “Don’t you have a meeting with my dad?”
Hoseok glanced at his watch and cussed under his breath, “I’ll see you later Y/N.”
“Bye Doctor Jung.”
Y/N took the bag and looked at him with curious eyes, “What flavor?”
“Strawberry.”
“Really? I wanted to try these. Thank you, Doctor Kim.”
“Hurry up and eat that so we can get to work. No slacking today.”
“Yes, Doctor.”
“Don’t salute.”
Doctor Yu frowned and looked at Y/N, “Sadly Seo Jimin won’t be discharged.”
Y/N looked at her and then back at the papers, “Her oxygen levels...you don’t mean...”
“Yes, a heart transplant.”
Y/N stood in the office and glanced at Seokjin with a frown, “Isn’t she young for this?”
“Nurse L/N, if someone needs treatment then they need it.”
Y/N nodded her head and looked down at her shoes. She felt stupid for saying that and she got scolded again. How many times will she get scolded by Seokjin?
Hyeon looked at his son, “Now Jin. Behave. It was a good question. Y/N always asks good questions regarding patients.”
Y/N looked up and smiled at his father, “Doctor Kim...”
Seokjin rolled his eyes and glanced at his dad, “I’ll be going. I have to talk to Jimin’s mother.”
Y/N watched him walk out and frowned, “Mean.”
Hyeon let out a laugh and stood up from his desk, “Don’t worry about him.”
“Doctor Kim?”
“You're doing great. He’s harsher on you because he sees potential in you.”
Her eyes widened and it looked like she had stars in her eyes, “Really!? You think so!?”
Hyeon nodded his head and crossed his arms over his chest, “I know so.”
“All you do is talk, hurry up.”
Y/N turned around to see Seokjin standing there with an annoyed face. She bowed at him and nodded his head, “Sorry. I’m coming.” She turned towards Hyeon and bowed, “Bye Doctor Kim.”
Hyeon let out a small laugh, “Bye, Y/N.”
Hyeon watched them leave with a smile on his face. He glanced down at the picture of his wife and smiled, “I think she's good for him. What do you think, Yuri?”
Y/N followed Seokjin but she was looking down at her shoes. She felt like if she looked at his back then he would grow arms from his back and attack her. She was so focused on her white shoes that she walked into his back when he stopped. She looked up to be met with his disapproving look, “Sorry...”
Seokjin didn’t say anything but it quickly changed when he saw Jimin’s mom, “Mrs. Seo, thank you for coming by.”
Mrs. Seo gave him a smile and nodded her head, “I’ll do anything for Jimin. Will she be able to leave today?”
Seokjin frowned and shook his head, “That’s what I need to talk to you about. Let’s go talk in the hallway.”
Y/N bowed at Mrs. Seo and she glanced at Jimin who was soundly asleep. She smiled at this and took out a small plushie from her pocket. She placed the hamster right to her and she smiled when she saw her hug it.
“She’s been sleeping for almost the whole day.”
She turned around and saw Taehyung with a frown, “I heard....”
“She’s not getting discharged is she?”
Y/N shook her head and looked at Taehyung, “How was your day?”
“Jungkook forgot his lunch so I shared mine. I’m hungry.”
Y/N let out a small laugh, “You're always saving him.”
“I can save you but you won’t let me.”
Y/N glanced at Jimin and shrugged her shoulders, “I can take care of myself.”
“You would let Jim take care of you.”
She frowned at his tone and looked at him, “You always bring him up.”
“Because it's the truth. This weekend we're going to the crab place?”
“If that’s okay with you?”
“It's perfect for me.”
“Nurse Kim, Nurse L/N, let’s leave Jimin’s room. She needs rest.”
Y/N glances over Taehyung’s shoulder to see Seokjin glaring but not her. She followed his eyes to see him glaring at Taehyung. She frowned at this but didn’t say anything. She bowed at Taehyung and made her way to Seokjin, “Sorry Doctor Kim. I was checking her vitals.”
“Good. We need to check on Sakura in room 342. Tell me her condition.”
“Right.” She turned around and waved goodbye to Taehyung, “I’ll see you this weekend.”
“Nurse L/N, hurry up.”
“Sorry, coming!”
The walk to Sakura’s room was quiet and Y/N kept glancing at her shoes and his Seokjin’s back. Seokjin’s shoulders were so broad and she wondered what it would look like underneath or what he would look like with just his doctor's coat. Her mind started to wonder and she couldn’t help but smile.
“Y/N, would you like to treat me?”
“Nurse L/N, did you hear me?”
She shook her head and looked at him, “Eh?”
He sighed and looked at the paper, “Sakura is twenty-six, she’s been having breathing problems. Her heart rate has been slower than usual. We need to do an echo.”
Y/N nodded her head, “Echo?”
“Have you seen one?”
Y/N shook her head and he sighed, “Then I’ll show you.”
Being this close to Seokjin was a dream. He was showing her Sakura’s heart but the only thing she saw was hearts in her eyes. The way his hair fell to his forehead and his gentle voice when he talked to patients made everything lighter. It felt like clouds were around her and Cupid was shooting her heart.
“Okay Sakura, we’re done. We will tell you the results when we get them.”
“Thank you, Doctor Kim.”
The two walked out and Seokjin crossed his arms over his chest, “What were we looking at in the echo?”
Y/N stared at Seokjin and bit her lip, “The chambers...”
“And why is that?”
“To see fluid...”
Seokjin sighed and shook his head, “Can you be more confident Y/N?”
Her eyes widened and she looked at him with a smile, “You said Y/N?”
“Focus.”
“Can I call you Jin?”
“Focus.”
Y/N was at her desk when she felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked up and smiled, “Doctor Jung.”
“How's the devil?”
“Still the devil but he called me by name. I hope I can hear it one more time.”
Hoseok laughed and nodded his head, “You're going somewhere with him.”
“You think so?”
“Definitely. I was going to ask about Seo Jimin's vitals from earlier.”
Y/N nodded her head and started going through her papers. She started telling Hoseok but she was unaware of the familiar brown eyes on her. He looked between them and he couldn’t help but glare at Hoseok. He shook his head and made his way down the hall away from the scene.
“I was actually going to check on her...this isn’t easy. She was so excited to be discharged.”
Hoseok checked his watch and sighed, “It’s late. She should be sleeping but by all means you can pop in. It doesn’t hurt to check.”
“Thank you, Doctor.”
Walking in the halls when it's night felt weird. There were fewer people which means it's quiet. The only sounds you can hear are the shoes on the tiles and the small conversations between the staff. Y/N walked down the hallway and when she was about to open Jimin's door, she noticed it was open. Her eyes widened and opened the door quietly. She took her phone out and shined the light to see Jimin’s bed empty, “Shit.”
Y/N ran out of the room but she bumped into someone, “I’m so sorry-”
“Y/N?”
She looked up and felt relieved, “Jungkook, you're just the person I needed. Seo Jimin is missing from her bed.”
The nurses were running around the hospital including Y/N. She was in the stairwell that led up to the roof and her eyes widened when she saw the familiar hamster stickers on the floor. She ran to the roof and slammed open the door. She saw Jimin crying on a bench with her knees to her chest. Y/N frowned and slowly walked to her, “Jimin...”
“Leave me alone.”
Y/N sat next to her and wrapped her arm over her shoulders, “Never...You're upset about the discharge, aren’t you?”
“I thought I was getting better. I was doing everything right but my body...it wouldn’t let me.”
Y/N frowned at this and gently rubbed her arm, “The body is stubborn sometimes. It matches our spirits. Remember, there's no rush in getting better. Take your time so you can be strong.”
Jimin glanced at Y/N with a frown and red eyes, “I don’t want to be broken anymore.”
“You're not broken. Don’t ever say that. You have so much love that your heart just couldn’t take it. Keep that love and positivity. I know it's hard but it will get through so much and it will get better.”
“Will you be with me?”
“Of course I will.” Y/N let her go and took off her cardigan to place over Jimin’s shoulder. She pushed some hair off of the younger girl’s forehead, “I’ll be with you okay. Every step.”
“I’m sorry I ran away...”
Y/N shook her head and looked up at the sky, “I get it. I would run away too. Look at all the stars shining.”
“I like the stars.”
“It’s pretty like you. Let’s get you back in bed before it becomes freezing.”
The two slowly walked down the stairs but they stopped when Seokjin and Taehyung came their way.
“Jimin!”
Jimin smiled at Taehyung and waved at him, “Tae, I’m sorry I ran away...I just needed a moment.”
Taehyung sighed and went to her level, “I’m just glad you're okay.”
Seokjin glanced at Y/N and noticed the goosebumps. He slipped off his jacket and draped it around her shoulders. Her face was in pure shock but he avoided her eyes, “You can’t get sick.”
He walked away as she stared at his back. She smiled to herself and brought his coat closer to her, “It smells so good.”
“Creep.”
“Shut up.”
When she was walking out of the hospital, her eyes landed on Seokjin who was waiting. She flattened out her clothes and walked towards him, “Goodnight Doctor Kim.”
“Wait.”
She stopped in her tracks and slowly turned around to look at him, “Yes?”
“You're always ready to help. No matter what it is.”
“Doctor-”
“Just like that day. You rushed to help that older woman and you didn’t even question it. You're meant to help people.”
Y/N felt the heat rush to her face as she stared at him with a smile, “Seokjin...”
“You're meant to help people, even if you're annoying.” He walked away and Y/N was left alone standing in the middle of the entrance. She raised her hands to the sky like in a victory pose, “HE REMEMBERS ME!”
┊ ➶ 。˚ °┊
It’s been three months since Y/N entered the hospital and it felt like a dream. Well, not a dream because of the sick patients but a dream because of Seokjin. Since that night, it felt like they were closer. He only insulted her three times a day instead of ten, that’s huge. Hoseok has been getting her muffins every Friday but then on Saturday Seokjin buys her tea and a breakfast sandwich. She was confused because she didn’t remember telling him her favorite tea or breakfast sandwich but she wasn’t going to fight him. It was a sign that he paid attention to her or someone told him. She wants it to be the latter.
“You want me to be your date for your brother's wedding?”
Taehyung nodded his head and took a sip of his tea, “Yeah, sorry.”
“Why didn’t you tell me before?”
“I honestly didn’t think I needed one but my mom was pressuring me.”
Y/N sighed and leaned back in her chair, “I’ll do it but I want lobster.”
“You and your seafood. Fine.”
Y/N glanced at the exit and saw Seokjin leaving. Y/N stood up from the chair and downed her tea, “I’ll see you later.”
“Y-”
Taehyung watched her leave the lunch court and he frowned at himself. He looked down at his tea and shook his head, “Always the second choice.”
Y/N ran towards Seokjin and smiled, “Doctor Kim!”
Seokjin turned around and sent a glare her way, “Why are you following me?”
Y/N looked around and then gave him a confused look, “I always work with you...it’s been like that for three months.”
“Let’s go before I change my mind.”
Seokjin walked away and she pouted, “Why is he being mean?” She shrugged her shoulders and followed him to his office. She waved at Hyeon who waved back and she sat next to him. She started to go through the paperwork with him (strutting here and there). Hyeon watched from his desk and smiled to himself. He could tell from his son’s eyes that he was happy but he wanted him to figure it out. He just wished it was faster.
“Nurse L/N, did you check on Lee Sam in room 109?”
She flipped the papers through her clipboard and shook her head, “No...it says he’s under Hoseok.”
“You're going to work with Hoseok today.”
She raised her eyebrow and looked at him with a confused look, “Why? I like working with you...we work well together.” I also want to look at your face.
“I’m going to be in the office all day. You need more training.”
“I can train with you. I don’t mind.”
“Also, Nurse Kim...Make sure you do your work. Don’t talk to him that much.”
Y/N furrowed her eyebrows and slowly nodded her head, “Okay? I’ll be going...bye?”
She left the office and Jin sighed to himself, “Dad the more you stare, the more annoying it gets.”
“I can’t help it. My son is jealous, it's a sight I neve thought I would see.”
“Shut up old man.”
Hoseok handed Y/N her clipboard and let out a laugh, “You really have no idea why Jin sent you to me?”
Y/N shook her head and closed the curtains, “He said it's because I need more training. What other reason would it be?”
Hoseok sighed and shook his head, “You're so smart but also so stupid.”
“Eh! What did I do!?”
That night, Y/N was walking down to her favorite ramen restaurant and she was shocked to see him sitting in the middle. She pushed some hair back and sat next to him, “How was the office work?”
Seokjin put down his chopsticks and shrugged his shoulders, “It was office work.”
She nodded her head and glanced down at his bowl, “You just eat the noodles and juice?”
“Yeah, why?”
“You need the toppings. They have the best fried shrimp, it tastes so good with the broth.” Seokjin turned towards her and she was caught off guard with his look, “Is everything okay?”
“You can stare at me all the time but I can’t do the same?”
“Eh? I don’t stare...I admire...that isn’t any better...”
He let out a small laugh and turned back to his ramen, “Order something. I’ll pay for it.”
She gasped and put her hands over her mouth, “Like a date?”
“It’s whatever you want it to be.”
She choked on her spit and he turned towards her, “Do I have to do mouth to mouth?”
Y/N choked again but this time she met with his smirk. That dinner was the best dinner Y/N ever had and it was because she felt seen by him for once. She wasn’t the clumsy nurse that always stuttered. She was her true self with him tonight. And she got fried shrimp.
┊ ➶ 。˚ °┊
“Tae, this wedding is so long.”
“Y/N, it’s a wedding.”
“So...”
She sat next to him at the reception and of course, she knew no one. The wedding was cute with the bride's dress being beaded from top to bottom. Sometimes she forgets Taehyung’s family was rich. She glanced down at her chicken and ate a piece as Taehyng talked to his uncle. She looked up to take a sip of her champagne but choked when she saw Seokjin casually talking to the bride. She turned towards Taehyung and slapped his arm, “What the fuck?”
“Ow, what?”
She pointed towards Seokjin and then looked at Taehyung, “Why is he here?”
Taehyung followed her finger and raised his eyebrow, “What a small world?”
She wiped her mouth and stood up, “I have to talk to him.”
“You don’t have to. You want to, there’s a difference”
“No, I have to talk to him because I’m in this pretty dress and I have make-up on. He’s never seen that before.”
“Go for it, I can’t stop you anyways.”
She nodded her head and she rushed towards him leaving Taehyung behind. He sighed to himself and took a sip of his whiskey, “I shouldn’t be shocked but...here I am.”
Y/N pushed her hair and felt the confidence coming from within, this was her moment, “Seokjin?”
Seokjin stopped talking to the bride and turned towards her, “Ah, Y/N. I wasn’t expecting you here.”
“Eh? I told you tho-”
“I wasn’t expecting you.”
She slowly nodded her head and she turned towards the bride, “I’m going to borrow him real quick.”
Y/N took his wrist and headed out of the ballroom with butterflies in her stomach. When they were in a secluded area she let go of his wrist and leaned against the wall with a nervous look. He looked at her with a raised eyebrow and loosened up his tie, “Is everything okay?”
“No...I can’t hold it back anymore.”
“Mmm?”
“Kim Seokjin, I like you.”
“I know.”
Y/N stared at him and mouth dropped, “What?”
Seokjin leaned forward and pinned her against the wall with a smirk, “I know you like me.”
“How?”
He gave her a “Are you serious look?” but quickly wiped it off, “I know.”
“And you didn’t say anything? Why?”
He leaned forward and placed a quick kiss on her lips making her eyes wide. When he leaned away he placed his forehead against hers, “I was waiting for the right moment.”
“Ri-Right moment? Was this the right moment? I thought the right moment was-”
“Y/N, I liked you the moment we met. When we saved our first patient together.”
“Really?”
Seokjin let out a small laugh and leaned forward placing a kiss on her nose, “I loved you for all this time. Every day you give me a reason to be my best self. I want to be a better doctor because of you. You always want to help and solve everything, how could I not love you?”
“Yo-You love me?”
“I do, I really do.”
“Holy shit.”
He leaned away and smiled, “Well, do you-”
“I love you...sorry, you didn’t finish your sentence.”
“I have a room in this hotel...do you want to go up?”
“Yeah....Yeah, I do.”
There were moments when Y/N couldn’t believe stuff. Like when she was five, she couldn’t believe that she saw a double rainbow. At this moment, she couldn’t believe she was going to Seokjin’s hotel room. The man that she’s been in love with since she was eighteen, loves her. He loves her like the way she loves him. What more can she want?
When the door closed, she stared at him with wide doe eyes that made Seokjin want to die. He walked towards her and gently touched her cheek with his thumb, “I love you...I wish I was more romantic but I would go to the ends of the earth to show you. Roses can’t even express how I love you but they can try. Y/N, you are my person. I love everything about you...even when you ramble.”
She felt tears well up in her eyes as she looked at him, “I wish I had that on my phone...it would be your new ringtone.”
He laughed and leaned forward without their lips, “No need for that, I’ll tell you every day for the rest of your life.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
The light of the hotel room illuminated their faces perfectly. The space between them was enough to create a silhouette. They leaned forward and her eyes gave him the answer he needed. Their lips gently touched, making them one under the light. Her arms slowly moved up and wrapped around his neck as he went around her waist. There was no space, no light was going to escape between them on this night.
“Ji-Jin!” She gasped as Jin inserted a second finger inside, pumping it as fast as he could. She bit her lip harshly trying not to bother the poor people next door, “You don’t have to be quiet.”
“Jin, there are people-”
“I rented out the rooms around me so I don’t have to deal with loudness.”
“Wow, that was really hot to hear actually.”
His fingers curled inside of her and it was gently touching her most sensitive spot that made her buck her hips. He pressed his palm to her clit as his fingers continued to move in her, “So good for me.”
“On-Only for you.”
After the intense orgasm, she glanced at him with a needy look, “Do you have a condom?”
“Of course I do.”
“Take off the rest of your clothes. It's not fair I’m naked and you're not.”
“Your wish is my command.”
When Jin comes back, the kiss turns from innocent with pure love to sloppy and needy. He gently pushes her up to have her lay on the pillows as he kisses down her neck. He placed a kiss on top of her breast and looked up, “I would eat you out but I can’t wait any longer. Next time I’ll do it.”
“Ne-Next time?”
“Of course, there will be next time. This pussy will only crave for me after I’m done.”
He rolled the condom onto his dick and looked up at her with a smile. She returned the smile and nodded her head, “I trust you.”
He kissed her neck and with a needy moan, she arched her back pressing her body closer to his. She could feel the heat from him and it was only turning her on more. Seokjin positions himself between her legs, his tip teasing her entrance. The waiting was killing her and she kept looking at him with pleading eyes. He begins to enter but once he is halfway, he pulls out causing her to moan out. He smirked at the reaction and stuck himself back in but fully this time.
He let out a groan as he looked at her face, “I love you.”
“I-I love you more.”
With each thrust, the love that they were both holding back was flooding up the room. The sounds of moans and wet slaps of their bodies coming together echoed. His movements became more urgent with each passing second, “You’re so...fuck... perfect.”
Her cheeks flushed from all the love confession but she couldn’t help but feel so blessed in this moment. He gently pushed the hair out of her face as she brought her thumb over his lips, a gentle touch to tell him what her heart wanted to say. His cock continued to pound into her g-spot and each thrust was sending her pure pleasure through her body.
“Let go, baby.”
She leaned forward placing a kiss on his lips when she felt the intensity coming over her. When she leaned away she felt like there was no air left in her body. Her body felt numb against his but she didn’t want this to end anytime soon. His voice was strained with the pleasure he was feeling, the clenching sensation was making him stutter.
“Cumming.”
She clenched her pussy around him harder and this was his breaking point. She was overwhelmed by the intensity of the pleasure as his head fell into her chest. The gasping of air filled the room as they stayed still in this moment. He slowly looked up and kissed her forehead with a soft smile, “My cure...”

crossing the threshold
[first chapter] [previous chapter] [master list] [next chapter] [read on ao3]
Summary: crossing the threshold signifies that the hero has finally committed to the journey. he is prepared to cross the gateway that separates the ordinary world from the special world. the crossing may require more than accepting one’s fears or a map.
Rating: T
Ships: Yuesi Fudo/Aki Izayoi
Warnings: canon typical violence, all the warnings that come with calamity ganon
Upon exiting Lady Asuka's house, Yusei immediately uses the paraglider to land on top of the archway in front of Lady Asuka's house. The view from here is stunning - and more importantly, he can get a view of every single person in the village. They bustle about their daily lives, ignoring the reality of the world they live in. Even in the post apocalypse, people continue to be people. There was something calming about that - that despite his failure to protect Hyrule one hundred years ago, it is still here. Calamity Ganon ultimately hasn't won - everything is still here. Sure, some places are wiped from the map and decimated to rubble, but not here. Not now.
Yusei pulls an apple out of his bag, rubbing it clean and taking a large bite out of it as he glances around, trying to tell if any of them wound be able to help him with his quest. One person does catch his eye: a strange blue haired man who was looking about the area as if it was new to him. Kakariko Town, as far as Yusei knew, was a closed community who have little strangers enter. It was why he pulls out the paraglider to fly over to the man, and the man grins at Yusei. "Ah, are you a traveler as well? I am a lover of art, and I am traveling the world in search of the most beautiful landscapes," he says. "I want to find a great fairy fountain, and I've heard there's on near the village. Great Fairy Fountains are supposed to be breathtaking beautiful, but I can't seem to find it." He rubs the back of his neck, sighing at this and shaking his head. "Nothing beats the thrill of tracking down the perfect view, you know. You understand, don't you?"
Yusei nods, remembering the perfect views he's already encountered so far. "I absolutely can understand the thrill of tracking down a beautiful view. I don't... often get a chance do to that though."
The man's eyes twinkles in response to this. "My name's Johan, what's yours?"
"I'm Yusei."
"Yusei," he says curiously, rubbing the back of his neck again. "I think I've heard that name before... Well, Yusei, tell you what. I don't know the exact location of the Great Fairy Fountain, but I've heard rumors of where it might be. Would you like to come along?" Yusei nods, wondering if the Great Fairy would have information about where he needed to go. It sure sounds like a being that might have knowledge beyond everyone's understanding. "Awesome! Come on, follow me."
With that, Johan takes off like a shot in the dark, forcing Yusei to quickly trail after him. He considers doubling back for Epona, but considering how quick Johan is moving, he worries he might lose track of him. Johan leads him out of the town and up the way towards the shrine, where he finally starts to slow down. Johan takes a deep breath as he leans up against the cliff side. "I'm sorry, Yusei, I don't think I can make it much further on my own," he admits, looking up towards the sky. "The Great Fairy Fountain should be just a little further up ahead. Why don't you go on without me?"
"I could carry you."
Johan looks at Yusei in shock at the offer, and shakes his head. "I want to rest instead," he says firmly. 'You go ahead. Take a photo of the Great Fairy Fountain if you find it for me."
Yusei wants to insist, but something in Johan's eyes said that now was not the time to do so. Instead he nods, agreeing to Johan's terms. It isn't something he feels right doing, but it was something that needs to be done, he supposes. He starts by following the path up along the right side. What stops him is a glowing spot out of the corner of his eye. He turns to look, and spots a strange, glowing animal that twitched in the middle of the path. It looked forward, looking at Yusei directly with a strange, knowing look. As if the animal knows who Yusei is. And then, just like it appeared, it bounces off and vanishes in front of his eyes.
The trail of the animal forces him to look ahead, and catches the sight of a glimmer in the distance. Whatever it is, it is certainly out of place. It is enough to make him curious enough to paraglide down to the other path, heading up along the other path. It leads him to a strange bud that is closed up with some sort of strange cloud puffing out of the top. He had a hunch this is the Great Fairy Fountain. He pulls out his Shiekah Slate, prepared to take the photo that Johan requested. However, the Sheikah Slate seeming refused to register the landmark. Instead, it informed him that this was once a place travelers would come to pay homage to but seems to no longer have the power it once had.
Curious, he moves forward to the fountain in an attempt to figure out exactly what was causing it to not be registered by the Sheikah Slate. "Sweet boy," comes the sound of a voice deep inside the flower bud. "Please, sweet boy, listen to my story."
Yusei is taken aback, attempting to examine the flower further. There is no hint in the rose's silver petals where such a creature is coming from, so he nods. "I will hear you out."
"I am Great Fairy Stardust, and this place was once a beautiful spring," she said, her voice deep and husky with a slight purr to it - an attractive voice. "As time passed, however, fewer and fewer travelers offered up their blessings to this place. Without any worshipers, I had no reason to flex my powers, and as a result, my power began to wane. I am near powerless now and I need your help. I need rupees to become whole again - one hundred of them to be exact."
Yusei considers this. Rupees are hard to come by, but it isn't like he is incapable of finding more gems to sell. So he nods, pulling the money from his pocket. "I will give the money you need."
A large, pale hand extends from the silver rose and snatches it from him, leaving him wobbling as she pulls her hand back into the bud. "You are very kind," she declares, and there is an odd sound in the flower as it retracts, retracts, then suddenly blooms in front of him. The rose opens wide, splaying out its petals in a beautiful blue and silver fountain. The fairy herself extends out, and Yusei found himself unable to describe the vision that is in front of him. She is curvy and towers over him, with blue scale-like clothing barely covering her skin and an orange glimmer up along her side and around her face. Her hair was thick, glossy, silver curls that fall down to her midback. When she opens her eyes, they are a sharp, unnatural orange that seemed to glow in the light. "Ah, the fresh air after decaying for so long... it's... intoxicating!" She giggles, and the blue blush on her pale skin makes her appear otherworldly. She glances down at Yusei, and it occurs to him that she is at least five times bigger than he is. "I can help you in return by enhancing your clothes.... but it seems there's nothing I can enhance! In order for me to help, I need you to bring me Bokoblin horns. For each item you have, I can let you what you need."
Yusei nods. "I can bring you some Bokoblin horns, Stardust."
"Excellent. You know," she says, winking at him. "It is truly a shame that you have to go so soon. Hope you make it back soon, Yusei. See you later!"
She descends back into the pool, and it strikes Yusei that he never told Stardust his name. There is, however, no time for him to think on this too hard. Instead, he takes a few steps back to try to take the photo for Johan again. This time, the fountain registers as a Great Fairy Fountain. No matter how many photos he takes of it, however, it simply couldn't capture the way the fountain glowed, the shimmers of blue and gold reflecting on the silver, or the pink sakura petals that seemed to dance around the pond. It was hopeless to capture the beauty, so he took his leave instead to return back to Johan.
Johan seems to have recovered in the few moments that Yusei was gone. "I hope that you had found the Great Fairy Fountain..." Yusei nods with a grin. "Wait, are you serious right now? You found it? Show me the picture!"
"No problem," Yusei says as he pulls out the Slate and pulls up the photo of the Great Fairy Fountain.
Johan frowns at this photo. "Hm, I expected it to be... I dunno. Elegant? Either way, I'm impressed you managed to find it. Hey, if you have anywhere you're trying to find, I'll be happy to help you since I've been all over Hyrule."
There were a lot of photos in the Slate that he wanted to know where they were. However, he is certain he'd only be allowed to ask about one of the many photos. He considers this carefully as he examines the photos in the Slate, wondering which would be the best one to show Johan. He finally settles on a photo of large gate with a snowy mountain behind it - a place he has no clue where it could be. The others he has slight hunches on, and weren't as pressing. "Do you know where this photo was taken?"
Johan examins the photo closely, before raising a brow. "I know where this is. East of this village is a big mountain called Mount Lanayru. It's on the west side of Nydra Snowfield. I would be wary about your approach, as I heard there is a massive monster lurking nearby," Johan says, the warning edged in his voice. "I am certain my help must have been useful, yes?"
Yusei pulls up the map, noting that it is mostly empty. The places that Johan mentioned weren't even on it, leaving no chance for him to mark where Johan said this place was. He looks out into the setting sun, and is taken aback. A strange, large bird is flying far out somewhere, seeming to be circling one place. He opens his scope, examining it and was stunned to notice it was impossibly large - it had to be. He would not normally be able to see such a bird from here if it wasn't. He marked it on his map, and reexamining his map reveals it is right next to where Lady Asukua marked off one of the Divine Beasts.
Until now, it didn't occur to him to think about why they might be called Divine Beasts. He didn't conceptualize what he was being tasked to free from Calamity Ganon's influence. He'd agreed to something without any real information, and was staring down what he was expected to go after - a beast so large, it could be seen clear across the country as if it was a normal sized bird. Fear hadn't been something he'd considered that he needed to feel until now. It is clear now that he was should have been scared, he should have been shaking with terror at what he was expected to take on to save the world, to free the princess.
He lets out a shaky breath, and shakes off the fear. If he stops to think now, then he might run and hide from his duty. He can't. Not now, not when so much hung on him to help everyone. So he runs towards the cliff, jumping off it and briefly considers not even bothering pulling out his paraglider. He wonders what the bite of the Earth would feel like against his bones. He does not let it happen - he pulls it out to land on his horse and pull the reigns tight to leave the village.

Apparently people think the new tri-stringer kit sucks???
what?????
Homie it's an area denial weapon and it was given THE area denial special.
Oh? You're mad about sprinkler? Look I get it, that sub is comparatively weaker compared to other subs. But can't you see its use????
The tri-stringer can't ink very well when you're trying to give backline pressure. That's where sprinkler comes in. Plus, sprinkler gives a slight buff to movement. The bow isn't so great at escaping opponents, but the sprinkler can both block some shots and be used to instantly slap some ink down at your feet.
More importantly, it paints more to help you use potentially ONE OF THE BEST specials to use with tri-stringer. Do you know how well this thing could capitalize off of Super Chump? It can use the special and immediately start pressuring opponents reacting to the special all from a backline position. If it can get the special quickly (like with the help of a sprinkler) a tri-stringer can just stand its ground and use the Chumps VERY frequently.
The previous kit encouraged some aggressive play. You could go to midfield and use the half charged shots with toxic mist to get your picks and then you could back it up with the killer wails.
This new kit though?
Backline for days. The sheer lack of good flanks in many maps WILL make this oppressive. Unless the special points are high, your true sub is the Chumps. This kit is not going to be bad you'll see.

I'm going to talk bout Wicked for a few minutes.
I am a long-time musical theatre fan. When I got into Wicked, it was still brand new. I sang Defying Gravity for my college audition piece back in 2006. I was obsessed. One of my favorite musicals came out that same time-period as well: Caroline or Change and I have never ever looked back from my love and passion for musical theatre.
There have always been pacing and structure issues with the stage version of Wicked. The climax happens at the end of Act One, and when you front-load your Act One, Act Two feels like a rushed race to the finish line.
I have thought deeply about how to "fix" Wicked. I was having a hard time figuring it out, so I turned to the source material: the Oz books and Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Well that novel is...not good. I think the author needed to work through some stuff. It was the 90's after all and at the time of writing I just think he lacked conviction and was maybe a bit repressed and also has a strange obsession with bowel movements, periods ( don't talk to me about his Snow White novel), and brought up children's genitals more than once so there's that (I should note that I am not suggesting anything about the author's moral character just that he maybe had some stuff to work through and it showed up in his writing). But more importantly he asked the question: do we have a soul? and only half-heartedly pursued it.
So. With that in mind. Yeah. The Wicked stage version is fucking brilliant. It finds a way to combine the Oz stories, the movie Wizard of Oz and the Wicked novel with amazing music and a somewhat coherent story. I no longer wanted to "fix" Wicked.
The film, however, wanted to do more. When I heard it was going to be 2 movies, I despaired. This told me that instead of tightening the story, they were going to do the opposite. But then I was hopeful again because I thought oh well maybe they'll re-structure it so much, it'll make sense to have 2 films. Then I found out the first movie was nearly 3 hours long. I despaired again. There are only a TINY handful of movies I have ever seen in my life that I thought benefited from being 3+ hours long and they are incredibly special. We're talking the leagues of Lord of the Rings, Dark Knight and Titanic. Most of the time, if a movie is 3 hours long, I find it's because the writer's just couldn't navigate their story well. My favorite films are short and snappy because they have a story to tell and they carefully map out the beats, the highs, the lows, and take me on an emotional journey with humanity at the center. My take is if you need 3 hours to tell your story...consider making a TV show. Just consider it. For me.
But people loved the Wicked film!!!! So I was hopeful again!!!
Finally I saw the film! The opening was brilliant. I'm glad they expanded on it in a way you can only do in film! "The Wizard and I" was great! And then, going into Dancing Through Life everything fell apart for me. I'm pretty sure that sequence was 40 minutes on its own. I think this film was made for the fans, luxuriating in every single moment, taking its sweet time. For the fans, I am happy. As a lover of good story-telling, I am left cold. Every beat was a whole Moment. Moment after Moment until finally I could breath during One Short Day but by then I was tired.
"But if life were only moments, then you'd never know you had one."
If you luxuriate in every moment, you lose the melody and you lose the plot. You lose the direction, the momentum to carry us through to the climax. When every moment is a Moment, you lose the energy to really show us one impactful idea.
Think about Coco, building and building and building until we get to the tear-inducing Remember Me ballad. Think about that first time you saw Avengers and the camera circles all those super heroes together for the first time. Think about the crazy rush of Mad Max Fury Road and the satisfaction we felt at the end. We get to have that moment because the story carried us there to the emotional heart of the film. This is what I'm talking about.
Defying Gravity alone has like (and I'm estimating here) 5 moments. Slow scenes, slow motion broom, slow motion cape, slow fall into childhood moment. I urge writers and directors to pick ONE moment and build to that. If you end up needing more fine, but justify it with great writing.
Other smaller takeaways: Whenever Morrible or the Wizard came on screen I sat up and was like finally some good food. damn they can act. I love them.
The Opening, Wizard and I, and One Short Day were fantastic and I enjoyed them a lot!
Visually stunning movie.
Sound mixing was so bad and I think it's because of insisting the actors sing live. I can really only think of ONE musical movie scene that I think benefited from singing live on set and that's it. I don't think it really adds anything except for the emotional satisfaction of the actors. But as an audience member...I'm sorry, I just don't think there's a real difference except that the sound is worse. I'd rather hear a beautiful full orchestra match up with the vocalist so they sound like they're somewhere in the same universe. I think this is something Greatest Showman got right. That movie said, "Realism? haha, fuck that! Here are six indulgent music videos. You're welcome." I don't believe lip syncing to their studio recorded singing hurt the performance.
When Kristen Chenowith opened her mouth I remembered how much FUN she is to watch and listen to. Obviously I had had full confidence that Ariana would hit her notes, but the thing is I shouldn't be thinking about that at all. I should never be thinking "I think this person will hit the notes." I should be thinking "Wow I'm really enjoying this, what a great story." And that's how I feel when Chenowith sings. I'm not thinking "uh oh, she did not take a very big breath, this might be a struggle." I'm thinking "Aw, how fun!"
My other notes are more personal preference nit picks (I prefer a more laid back, relaxed Fiyero), but it's not really a criticism, I really do think everyone did a great job in their roles. I found the choreography to be somewhat uncomfortable, but I think that could be to do with unbalanced sound aspect. I think the treatment of racism and ableism was well done and could be a very good setup for part 2
Ultimately I suspect I will like part 2 more than part 1 since they have an opportunity to potentially have a little body-horror on screen.
Also I'm curious how Rian Johnson would have directed this film. just a little thought exercise

[Review] Warhammer: Vermintide II (PC)
Rats 4 Dead.
My brother and I, always looking for co-op games to play, got this for free in a giveaway. About halfway through the main campaign, he got tired of it so I did the rest solo. He’s much more of a Warhammer Fantasy fan than me so was able to school me through some of the lore, although this setting is much like other Tolkien pastiches like D&D, so the basic premise (and sadly some of the inherent racism) is very recognisable.
But to understand the gameplay experience of this one, all you have to do is look at Left 4 Dead, whose homework Swedish studio Fatshark has been shamelessly copying since 2015 to great effect. It’s a level-based four-player co-op campaign where our heroes have to achieve various objectives while fending off hordes of zombies/ratmen & “barbarians” (it’s ok to kill them because they worship “evil gods”...). In amongst the teeming throngs of fodder are special enemy types, with particular abilities that do heavy damage or incapacitate individual players until they can be assisted by their comrades. This formula all works well here as it did before, as long as the players are sufficiently cooperating.
Added on top of this are systems of leveling up for perks, looting variant weapons, and most importantly differentiating the characters to allow separate playstyles. My brother favoured the dwarf Bardin, a melee-focused character with an explosive projectile. I stuck with Kerillian, the sardonic pan-Celtic elf with an enormous quiver for racking up rapid-fire ranged kills. I was decent at getting headshots and liked her crowd-control daggers for melee. Despite being a four-player game, the devs cleverly built five playable characters, so that nobody would be stuck with their least favourite when choosing a party: there’s always another option. We usually filled out our slots with bots, and when we figured out how to we opted out of Saltzpyre, a tiresome witch-burner type who is always snootily banging on about heretics.
The campaign takes you through various Skaven-infested caves, ruined towns, swamps, etc. in an effort to stop an alliance of Chaos and ratman and their big glowy portal machine. Content updates, both paid and free, have added new mini-campaigns, some of which reuse maps from the first game. The level design tries to keep things interesting and moving forwards, although at times as a first-time player with bots I would get lost and not have much indication of where to go next. These instances are rare though and there’s still things to find tucked away in corners and enemies to fight spawning in.
At least the bots follow you (most of the time). The most frustrating times were when the characters separated, were attacked by special baddies, and suddenly half an hour of progress goes right down the drain as you start the level all over. This is what made me turn the difficulty back down to the lowest setting for the later levels and especially bosses, who can also easily overwhelm you in their small arenas. Good coordination, communication, and focus are required on higher difficulties, which is why I had more fun blasting away on easy.
I just don’t think you’d get the value out of this title at full price unless you’re more invested in replaying levels and unlocking things than I am. It was a decent romp through once, but for me a good part of the experience was the novelty and figuring out what to do in each level. There’s also a whole cosmetic store which seems pointless to me (in the way I played the game), since it’s a first-person game so you the player never see what your character looks like. Anyway, this is a good iteration of the Left 4 Dead gameplay style, a good use of the licence, and has good production values. As long as you can get past the absurd violence of beheading countless half-naked people as their black blood sprays everywhere, you can have a good time.

Aside from a lot of the more obvious reasons for wanting a Daryl/Carol story continuation, I also think of how it would finally free the characters to be real and true to themselves. They have both been shoehorned into ridiculous plots, some from others’ comic arcs and some just because tptb thought it would be “fun”. Carol, more often than not, gets sidelined from bigger plots to enable her male counterparts to shine. This was particularly obvious during the Rick era and the introduction of Negan. Daryl’s character is often all over the map, with the show using him to look cool, (to impress dudebros and fan girls) and therefore overlooking the character’s actual depth and heart.
Both have been propping up new and often uninteresting characters for years. Also the deliberate separation tactics were quite tiresome. They tell us they are soulmates, we see they are soulmates, yet they spend seasons apart, with very little explanation. Simply to keep the viewers focused on something less interesting!
Personally, these two very real examples of humanity, only ever feel real and true to themselves when they are together. What they have is special and not something that can be replicated by swapping them for a dozen other pairings. Or by having poor Daryl travel the globe alone. I don’t want to see him lost or lonely again and certainly not for a random reason that doesn’t include Rick or more importantly, Carol.
I don’t want that either. It would feel too much like back pedaling when they should be crossing the threshold into something deeper with each other. For them, there is no bottoming out, yet we get seasons like 7, 8, and 11 intended to stunt their growth. If Daryl’s show is a side mission and we know he’s coming back to Carol, that’s great and that’s comforting, but it’s just another delay. I think after 12 years, their fans have earned the part of the story they’ve been dying to get to.

COMPLETED: Stranger Things: 1984
What a blast! I mean...it felt like a McDonald's Toy version of a tie-in-game, but like one of the cool ones that you're like: "This is better than some of my real toys!" I wish there was more to the story, but for what's basically an Atari/NES game I guess it's pretty good!
I downloaded this once. I think back when season 2 released (pretty sure this is a season 2 tie-in). I immediately dug it--but I didn't play past the first dungeon. Not sure why. Maybe that's when my kids were young and I barely had time to sleep, let alone play a game.
So what brought me back after all these years? A 4-day weekend ;)
I got the new Pixel 7 Pro and I've been testing out its gaming abilities (including some PS2 games!!!). While I was shopping around for some cool games to play on my phone (since I'm losing Stadia) I saw ST:1984. Now that I have a ton of hard drive space I decided why not download it for a rainy day. Then it turned into why not play it. Which turned into why not ignore my children for the weekend?
And then I beat it.
Graphics
Are great! They look like really good SNES graphics. Which does not match the 1984 setting, but they need to be somewhat good...Most importantly, they just feel like Stranger Things.
Gameplay
The gameplay really shines. You end up collecting characters throughout the game. The obvious cast you would expect (with Max and Eleven as bonuses). What's great is the each character has some sort of special skill or move:
Hopper - punches hard (good for punching puzzles pieces into place)
Lucas - shoots things at a distance (including unreachable switches)
Nancy - hits things with a bat. Can get upgrades, making her the best damage doer.
Mike - Rides a bike for faster world-map travel and can stun enemies with a flashlight.
Will - can crawl through pipes (and take everyone with him)
Dustin - throws donuts to distract people and creatures
Max - skate board and throws money...but I need it...
Eleven - can teleport between swimming pools--and that's all I guess.
The game feels very much like Zelda with you moving room-to-room fighting foes and collecting keys. There's also puzzle elements based around the different characters' skills. It's really well done. Some of the dungeons feel a little long at times, but they're usually done just as they're about to get too long. And the one that has Dustin includes a metal gear solid esque stealth section, which was pretty cool--but also time consuming. Probably good they didn't force that past the single dungeon.
Wold Map...
Similar to Link to the Past, there's an overworld map with characters, quests, and enemies--and secrets that require unique character abilities. And then there are dungeons that progress the story, contain a boss, and reward you with a new ability/item (which comes in the form of new characters).
I think they did a great job of capturing the spirit of the show and the key areas. But the world map is a bit of a labyrinth, with whole sections of the town and neighborhoods cut-off to the player before they can acquire characters to navigate the obstacles. It's mildly annoying but somewhat understandable (it's very Zelda). But even when you've unlocked the whole map it can still be a pain to navigate. Roads twist and turn and permanent obstacles make some direct routes impossible.
Story
The game starts off with a bang. You start as Hopper. He, more than any other character, comes through quite well in the text-only dialog. Everything I read from his character I could hear it in Hopper's voice. It wasn't the same for everyone else. For the most part, they said very basic lines--but very little that made them stand out. Sure, the boys sounded like boys--but you wouldn't know who was speaking without their name-tags.
At first, the story seems kind of interesting. There's a mad scientist in the government lab. Hopper finds Lucas poking around and they team up to defeat the scientist. Then it turns into a series of fetch quests where you're fetching the characters who are trapped in different places. As best as I can tell--none of the dungeons had narrative significance, and little story or character development happens during the dungeons. "Mike is here, go rescue him." You find Mike. "Thanks for rescuing me. Let's get out of here." That's about it.
Sadly, Eleven doesn't feature significantly in the story. She's unlocked by collect all the waffles and putting them in her food box in the woods. You can't collect all the waffles until you beat the game. So basically, you dont' get her till the end. As I understand it, you can start a new game while having her from the beginning--but it still makes the story feel...insignificant.
My guess: this came out right at the time the 2nd season released, so they included all the known cast without trying to give any spoilers. Even having Max available as an option character suggests they didn't want to tip their hand that Max would become a significant character in the show.
Side Quests
Strangely, my favorite part was doing the side quests. They mostly took place in the world map and involved the player finding a significant item and delivering it to the character that lost it. Jonathan lost a lens filter, Steven wants movie tickets, Mike's mom needs milk, Joyce can't find her car keys. It's small simple things that make the whole experience more grounded and human. I kind of wish this was more of the core game:
People around town notice weird things or things go missing. The player goes to hunt for those things leading them into dungeons and recruiting the help of their friends. Over time, it's revealed that these little things are associated with a nefarious plan. Something silly, like another agent trying to draw out another Demogorgon for capture.
I don't know, something.
Anyway--I really enjoyed the game and I was really impressed with how serious they took a simple tie-game and made something that was true to the time and spirit of the show. I really want to play Stranger Things 3--but I gotta finish Roki!!

Retrospective Review: Casino Royale (2006)
So after thinking about it, I figured that with No Time to Die coming out soon, the Craig Bond era Bond movies deserve a post per film. Casino Royale is the film that got me into Bond. I had seen some of the Brosnan films by then, but they didn't really stick to me much. Perhaps also because I was reasonably young when the Brosnan films came out. But Casino Royale came out during my teen years, where I was starting to get into more dark and gritty movies. To me, this movie and Batman Begins, are cut from the same cloth. Both rebooting characters that had gotten too campy in previous iterations, both brilliant origin stories, and both grounded in reality and gritty. Its no wonder that both version of these characters ended up being my favorite versions. Casino Royale is still easily my favorite Bond film to date.
Truthfully, to me this film is near perfection as an action-thriller. For classic Bond fans who have grown up with the franchise and want specific things like Moneypenny and Q and various gadgets, this film may not be as endearing because it very specifically goes away from being gadget heavy and doesn't give Bond a support staff other than Mathis. I think the most high tech thing in the movie was a portable defibrillator. But this film had me from the very beginning in the black and white sequence and how it showed Bond's two kills to become 007 and how it reimagined the classic opening shot of Bond shooting and the blood red soaking over the screen. I just new we were in for something special from the very beginning. What's amazing is the pacing of this film. This was the longest Bond film since OHMSS at the time. I have watched all prior Bond films and I have felt restless at times while watching them, but not when watching Casino Royale. There is constantly something happening and it keeps you engaged. Not once was I bored in the movie.
The action in the film is absolutely high class. I think its the best Bond action that I have seen. The most classic scene of course is the incredible Parkour chase. Its incredibly exhilarating and major kudos to the guy who did the stunts for the bomb maker. You also get a real understanding of what a brute force this Bond is. While the Bomb maker chooses to jump through the window, Bond will burst through the wall. The Bomb maker will climb construction rods, Bond will just drive a bulldozer and destroy the construction and climb up. When the bomb maker throws the gun at him, Bond just catches it and throws it right back. Little things like that give Bond a personality that is different. But this is only the first great action sequence. There is the Miami airport truck sequence that is also brilliant. You have to love the smug smile on Bond's face when the bomber accidentally blows himself up. There is the staircase fight which is brutal and visceral. Then there is final fight scene in Venice which is emotional and tragic and is the true making of Bond. In between it all, there is the Poker game which is surprisingly entertaining given it takes up quite a chunk of time. There are also some incredibly tense sequences which are laced with humor, like the Bond poisoning scene where Bond almost gets killed and then returns with a classic one liner to leave Le Chiffre dumbfounded. There is the torture scene which is hilarious because of how Bond reacts to the torture and eggs him on in a way. The film never lets up in the action and the thrills.
An enormous part of the success of the film is the casting of Mads Mikkelson as Le Chiffre. I had not known Mads from anywhere before this, but he is immediately compelling and enigmatic. More importantly, rather than just being an all powerful villain to foil, he feels like a human. The tearing blood is a great, sinister gimmick, but you feel like he is on the edge when he loses money in the stock market due to Bond. You feel his desperation in some of the Poker scenes, as well as when the african fighters find him at the hotel, and then when he is torturing Bond to find the location of the money. I am not sure whether I like him more than Bardem's Silva or not, but its telling that the best Bond movies of Craig's era have the best villains. This film put him on the map for me and I loved him as Hannibal, saw him Dr. Strange, and I want see how he does as Grindelwald in the next Fantastic Beasts movie.
However, what elevates this film beyond any prior Bond movie is the casting of Eva Green as Vesper Lynd. She is the best Bond girl ever put to film and the romance between her and Bond is one of the most heartfelt and tragic romances that I have seen. The chemistry between the two actors/characters is electric from their very first scene in the train. The film gives them everything. There are deeply intimate scenes between the two which are not remotely sexual such as the tender shower scene where Bond comforts Vesper after the stairwell fight, many instances of witty repartee, scenes of romance, and then the bitter tragedy of her betrayal and her death. Even her death scene is picturized in a way where you really feel the connection as you can tell that Vesper can't bear to live with what she's done. The film doesn't flinch when showing her drown so it engulfs the audience in the same horror and sadness that Bond is feeling. In general, you experience the same emotions as Bond does as you can't help but fall in love with Vesper and just at the point of happily ever after, it all turns to ash. Its a phenomenal character arc and it also does a great job of establishing how Bond became so cold. Its a fantastic performance from Eva Green, and yet another instance of an actor who put herself on the map in my eyes.
And then there is the man himself. Yet another actor who I knew very little about. At that point everyone thought Craig wasn't good looking enough, not tall enough, not charismatic enough etc... to play Bond. But boy did he just blow expectations away. He is my Bond for sure because his performance is just exceptional in every way. He is built like a tank and is a force of nature, but Craig brings a tender vulnerability, perfectly suited for a young Bond. He looks dapper, is charismatic, is great in the fight scenes, and you genuinely feel he could beat the crap out of people. As I have already mentioned, there are so many touches to his performance that is unique to him. The brutality he brings in the fight scenes, the smirk at the end of the Miami scene, the heartfelt tenderness in the shower scene, the twinkly eyes humor, the rage when he is betrayed, the devastation at Vesper's death, and then the coldness that comes after that. He gets to show a full range, and he delivers every aspect with perfection.
One of the major carryovers from Brosnan era, was Jud Dench as M. And she gets a lot more to do during the Craig era. She is phenomenal as she always is. The dynamic between her and Bond is slightly more stern maternal in the Craig era compared to Brosnan and their interactions are great. Jeffrey Wright brings Felix Leiter back into the fold for the first time since License to Kill and he's a welcome presence as always. Giancarlo Giannini is also pretty great as Mathis and I'm glad he came back in QoS. Jesper Christensen has a quiet presence as Mr. White, who makes recurring appearances in the future.
I feel not enough people give Martin Cambell credit for what he has done. Twice he has launched Bonds successfully. GoldenEye was really good and Casino Royale is just outstanding. I have never paid much attention to the Bond song but the song for Casino Royale is pretty great. Again its telling that the two songs that I remember from Bond movies are from Casino Royale and Skyfall. Anyways, Casino Royale is a near perfect movie, especially for someone who is new to Bond. It really launched Bond into the modern world and got him away from the cold war era type plots. If I had to quibble about something, I would say some of the scenes in the Bahamas are a little slower and maybe 5-10 minutes can be edited down but even those scenes are great character scenes and we get a new origin of the DB5. A 9.5/10 for me.

Not Your Typical
Genre: college AU, hurt/comfort (kind of?)
Pairings: romantic Demus, Logicality, and Prinxiety
Content: some language, autistic character, sensory overload, mentions of losing friends in the past, anxiety, unintentional self harm, Roman is kind of a jerk but he regrets it, food mentions, unable to eat certain consistencies, beach/water/swimming, Janus being a disaster gay, ASL, selective mutism.
Word count: 6k
Comments: Like always, I don’t intend for these to be so long. Holy cow.
Janus is written based mostly on my experiences as someone with autism, and how it’s affected my childhood/relationships/daily life. No one’s experience is the same.
Janus was always alone. Alone, not lonely.
Most of the time, that is.
His whole childhood was an endless cycle of make a friend, weird them out, be alone. Find another friend, weird them out, be alone. And sometimes it hurt, yeah, but he got used to it. At home, he spent the entire day in his room, assembling structures out of legos before tearing them down and starting over. Sometimes he’d build something really cool, and that would stay up for a long time. He didn’t have any siblings, and his parents didn’t give a whoop as long as the floor was generally clear, so no one ever bothered the space ships or towers or just really long lines that stretched from one wall to the other. He liked those.
Things changed when he got to middle school. Life started getting real, people became more than just recess friends, and that unsettled him. He made a couple close friends, friends that he really opened up to only for them to leave him when he became too much. He just couldn’t help it though; he couldn’t help the way he bounced when he got so excited he couldn’t breathe, or how he couldn’t use words when he got overwhelmed by the touch and the noise, or how he couldn’t stop talking about his favorite shows or books. He was labeled as childish. It was like a label had been stuck to his chest that read “avoid at all costs”, and people did.
So he relearned how to be alone. He put a lava lamp next to his bed for when he needed something constant to look at, he got a collection of chewy necklaces and stim toys that never left his room. After a lot of research, he convinced his parents to buy him a weighted blanket for when every touch was too light, too agonizingly light, and he needed something firm to ground him. At school, or really around anyone, he learned to control his more obvious stimming and touch sensitivity by staying in oversized sweaters and jeans. He taught himself basic sign language for when he couldn’t talk, even though he knew his parents wouldn’t understand him. They took forever to learn basic signs, for ‘water’ or ‘quiet’ or ‘no’, and both eventually got frustrated and gave up. As if their frustration was anything compared to his.
It was going great, not perfect but better than before, until he graduated high school. Suddenly he realized he was about to move halfway across the country, to a new environment with new triggers and new people who didn’t understand that he wasn’t frowning because he was pissed, but because smiling when you didn’t understand the reasoning was exhausting. Why do people smile and greet you when they enter the room? Why couldn’t that be more of an… understood thing? I’m here, you’re here now, we both know that, so why bring so much attention to it? For once his parents were kind enough to help him out, taking him to the campus during the summer to get acquainted with the surroundings and learn the map by heart. He talked to the admission’s counselor, explaining his disability and why that meant he couldn’t be on the side of campus near the highway, because the constant noise and common sirens would make him explode. They were eventually able to move him to one of the other buildings, one with apartments instead of dorms, even though that was generally only for third and fourth years. It took a load off his shoulders; less noise, less people. The one thing he couldn’t do was meet his roommates before the year started.
The school got them into contact, and since he was the last to be assigned to the six person pod, they added him into their pre-established group chat. The other five already had nicknames, ranging from ‘Dad’ to ‘Rat Bastard’, and he immediately felt like an outsider. Not like that was new to him, though. Except, he didn’t stay like that. When one of the group, ‘Nerdy Mcnerd’ on the chat (he’d long forgotten their actual names), asked him what he liked and he immediately sent a list of special interests and hyperfixations, the top being snakes, it was like a door had been opened. Nerdy Mcnerd was a fan of space as well, and the two stayed up until all hours of night on their own chat discussing space and their place in the universe. Rat Bastard had an affinity for what people would categorize as “creepy animals”; octopi and squid, spiders, star-nosed moles, and most importantly, snakes. Their conversations mostly involved dopey pictures of snakes and unintelligible key smashes and emojis. Emo Disaster shared his love of darker themed TV shows, and they started a couple new ones at the same time, constantly updating each other with theories. When he mentioned his major was psychology, Dad was immediately overjoyed to be sharing the major with someone, and offered to help him study for the harder classes. He didn’t hit it off quite so well with Princey, who was put off by Janus’ so called “moodiness” and didn’t trust him.
When they finally met, it was supposed to be great. Janus knew the environment, somewhat knew his roommates, and was surprisingly excited for the new year. His joy was suddenly vanquished, however, as meeting these people face to face took a turn for the worse. Dad, Patton, immediately tried to go for the hug when he walked into the apartment for the first time, and was slightly taken aback when Janus reared back so hard he hit his head on the wall. The glee disappeared and he apologized profusely, and that’s when Nerdy Mcnerd, Logan walked in, explaining that Patton was very physical. They were over it rather quickly, but Janus shuddered as soon as the other two turned to each other. They had already claimed one of the three rooms for themselves, so Janus chose the one furthest into the apartment. He dropped his suitcases next to one of the two beds with a deep sigh. The thought of a hug… no. It unsettled him greatly, made his skin crawl. Maybe one day, but not now.
Emo Disaster and Princey, Virgil and Roman, arrived later in the day, hand in hand, bickering animatedly when they walked into the apartment. They were greeted with a huge hug from Patton and a side hug from Logan, and that’s when Janus recalled that they had all been roommates the year prior and again, felt a small tinge of pain. He was still the odd one out. Virgil gave a two finger salute to where Janus was sitting curled up on one of the bar stools, knees pulled to his chest and for the first time, Janus didn’t feel compelled to give a forced smile in greeting. It was a relief. The small nod was all that was needed. Roman however, was a different story. When they happened to make eye contact for the first time, the taller man still standing in the doorway, Janus flinched. Hard. The man’s eyes burned through him, as if scouring through his brain, eyes so full of passion that Janus had to look away. Eye contact was only an issue for him sometimes, but with Roman, it physically hurt. Which only made the theatre major more suspicious of him. As he passed him on the way to get a glass of water, the taller man blurted out, “You’re a first year, why are you in a third year building?”, earning him a gentle smack from Virgil. He answered with a lame shrug and rushed back to his room, conceding to just go to sleep, regretting leaving his drink on the counter.
No one besides Janus was surprised when the door burst open at three am and a loud voice screamed, “I’M BACK, FUCKERS!” He was frozen in place, woken with such an adrenaline rush that he couldn’t move. Outside, the other four exited their rooms with varying levels of annoyance and delight, greeting the final member of the group. Remus, as Janus heard them proclaim, was his roommate, the only two dwellers not in a relationship. The gremlin burst into the room, a deranged smile on his face, and Janus wanted to cry. Why did he have to be stuck in a room with the loud one? But Remus saw the mismatched eyes poking out from under the blanket and with no hesitation, sunk to the floor next to the bed, still smiling but a million decimals softer.
“Hey, Snakey. Sorry to scare ya. I’m Remus, but you can still call me Rat Bastard if you want. Call me whatever, I don’t really get offended. You go back to sleep, I’m gonna get settled in. We can talk in the morning.”
Janus wasn’t planning to fall asleep, not with this new person in his room, but Remus was shockingly silent as he unloaded his things (he packed a bunch of garbage bags, not even a suitcase or box), and he couldn’t help the way his eyes slipped shut.
First semester came to a close, and he was equally delighted and horrified that everyone was staying on campus for break. It had become harder and harder for him to avoid movie nights, or family dinners (as Patton called them), or days they all went into town together. In the beginning, he put it off to being tired. Then, studying for exams. Now with school halted for nearly a month, he was out of excuses. It was getting to the point where he could feel the frustration from his roommates, and he wanted to admit how much he wanted to spend time with them, until his drawer full of secret stim toys and chewy necklaces called him back. At times, he let himself spend time with them. Baked something with Patton, talked about the stars with Logan, sat with Virgil as they studied, and it was good. He never was able to escape Roman’s cynical glares that made him absolutely shudder, but he got on much better with his twin.
Remus never minded if Janus only greeted him with a raised eyebrow, and he was okay to have more one sided conversations while Janus drew, or after a few weeks, stared unapologetically. Because god, there was so much about Remus that Janus couldn’t help but watch, even if a normal person would get uncomfortable by his wide and unblinking eyes. Luckily, Remus was no ordinary person. But the younger still kept the drawer to himself, only allowing himself to nom on the plastic or squeeze the orbeez filled squishy snake with intense fascination when he was alone. So every time he was with the others and felt the need to stim or infodump or was about to have a stress induced meltdown, he would excuse himself and leave without so much of a goodbye. He couldn’t, not in front of them. Every time he left, he could hear Roman’s quiet remarks about him that stung more than he wanted to admit.
He’d had so many people leave, people he allowed himself to get close to, only for them to see the side of himself he tried to hide. In his heart, he knew that part of him wasn’t bad. It was just him. Other people didn’t understand that, though. No matter how much he tried to convince himself that no one would judge him, or laugh at him because they weren’t like that, he was scared. The effort was wearing him thin, and it came to the point where he realized he had to tell them. He had to, or he would burst, and that would be way worse.
It was just three little words: I. Am. Autistic. And he’d explain everything, tell them about his stims and limits and how he needed space sometimes and hugs others, and spill everything about himself, and they’d accept him. They’d have to, right? Only, the night he was planning to blurt out the truth, something stopped him.
They were eating dinner, one of the only ones he’d attended in a while. Patton kept glancing at him from across the table as he picked half heartedly at his lasagna, distracted from the lively conversation between the twins and Virgil. The whole thing was speckled with bite sized pieces of mushrooms and zucchini, two of the foods that he couldn’t eat to save his life. The texture made him want to recoil into himself and scream and yank at his hair, and he’d learned early in life that that wasn’t a normal response to food. He wanted to explain to Patton that it wasn’t the meal itself he was avoiding, that it wasn’t Patton’s cooking that he didn’t like, it was just the texture of those two things.
Well, maybe that was a good gateway into his big announcement, if you could even call it that. It felt almost as scary as his coming out to his parents had been. If they didn’t take this well, he might be exiled from the group. If they tried to put up with them, they’d get irritated so quickly and slowly freeze him out. He really didn’t want that. It needed to happen though, he realized. How much worse would it be if one of them walked in on him having a meltdown, holding a pillow over his mouth to block his screams, biting almost animalistically on a necklace? How unsettled would they be if they saw him hitting his blanket pile out of repulsion of the feeling of his textbook pages? Better to warn them ahead of time. It was only luck that had gotten him this far.
Just as he opened his mouth to speak, Logan hit the table with the heel of his hand and let out an almost guttural scream before storming into his and Patton’s room, slamming the door behind him. Janus nearly fell backwards off his chair, matching Virgil’s surprised expression. Roman went silent, wincing slightly.
“What…” It was the first word he’d said the entire meal. Patton whipped his head towards him as if he’d forgotten he was there, a sudden sympathetic look on his face. He gave a weak smile.
“Sorry about that, kiddo. Logan has autism, sometimes he can’t handle the stimulus around him. Or maybe he just had a rougher day than I thought. I’ll check on him after dinner, give him some alone time.”
Logan has autism.
Logan has autism.
Oh my god.
It was like everything clicked into place. His passionate talk about topics he was interested in that could rival Janus’ (if he would ever let himself infodump like he wanted). His mannerisms, his occasional emotional outbursts, his rigorous unbreakable schedule, it all made sense. For a brief second, Janus was elated. Someone like him, someone who understood! And if they accepted Logan, maybe they would be able to understand him, even if they presented different areas of the spectrum.
But… how would that look? Janus had hidden away his neurodivergent traits for so long, repressed them until he felt like he would literally explode… what if they thought he was faking it? It’s not like they knew him well, not with the amount of time he avoided being around them. They might think he was lying to get attention, didn’t want to be left out. Wanted to be special.
Patton seemed to be waiting for a response, he noted. He gave a curt nod, hoping it displayed that he was unbothered by Logan’s disability, before giving a stupid excuse about some reading to finish over break and darting back to his room. Remus joined him later, saying nothing about the fact that Janus was huddled under his weighted blanket, no book in sight. He sat down in front of the bed, a common habit of his now, and began to quietly talk about some new dark fantasy story he was designing, his lilting voice soothing Janus to sleep.
Time passed, winter came and went, and the end of second semester was drawing near. Janus was still careful with the way he presented to the others. They had picked up that he didn’t like physical contact, and though they never said a word about it, Patton’s lasagna recipe shifted, kept changing, until it no longer included mushrooms and zucchini. Janus refused to believe it was for his sake, though. He tried to join them for a couple movie nights, but the constant fear of stimming made his anxiety spike, therefore finding the need to stim more compelling, until he had to leave. It was getting harder, however, now that it was that pleasant in-between time where he understood how his new profs worked but it wasn’t exam season yet. His excuses were dwindling. Like always, Roman made his stupid quips that hurt him more than was probably intended, and he’d finally had enough.
Maybe that’s why he was staring out at the open lake in front of him, hands playing absentmindedly with the hem of his shirt as Patton and Remus squealed, sprinting into the water without a second thought. One of their shirts had landed on Janus’ sandaled foot, and he quickly kicked it off as the light touch began to irritate him. Logan stood to his side, watching his boyfriend with an almost imperceivable smile.
“You guys could have helped carry stuff if you were just going to stand there!” Roman’s indignant voice carried over the lawn, muffled slightly by the pile of towels he was carrying. Virgil snorted, whether in agreement or at Princey’s expense, Janus didn’t know. Either way, he dumped his handful of lawn chairs unceremoniously onto the lawn at their feet.
“You two set these up then. I’m hot, I’m going swimming.”
“Damn right, you are,” Roman grinned. Virgil raised an eyebrow.
“Damn right I’m hot, or I’m going swimming?”
“Yes.” He didn’t give any of them a second to retort, scooping up a shrieking Virgil before sprinting them both into the water.
“They didn’t even take their shirts off,” Logan commented, picking up a chair from the pile and unfolding it. Janus quickly joined in, helping him set the four chairs into a line and placing the towels down in front of them. “Did you want to go swimming?”
Admittedly, Janus hadn’t actually gone swimming, much less to the beach, since he was a kid. He was lucky to have even found a swimsuit amongst his other barely worn clothing; how it had snuck into his suitcase, he didn’t know. The water looked inviting and it was hot, but right now he was exhausted from the long ride over in Remus’ truck, having to refrain from plugging his ear when it got too loud or maintain his breathing carefully when a leg touched his.
“Maybe in a bit. I’m kind of tired.”
Logan turned to look at him, dare he say scrutinizingly? He washed the expression away quickly, asking, “Would you like me to stay with you?”
“No, it’s okay,” Janus mumbled, “You go have fun. I’ll be fine, I like the quiet.” As if to punctuate his point, a child screamed from the playground, making them both flinch.
“Are you positive?”
“Yes. Go enjoy yourself, Logan.”
He nodded curtly, pulling his shirt over his head in one fluent motion and walking towards the waves professionally, as if he were walking towards a lecture. Patton cheered from the water.
Janus didn’t concern himself with the time as it passed, instead letting his mind wander while he focused on a line of ants that were crawling up a tree next to him. It wasn’t until a fast approaching form caught his attention did he tear his eyes away, hearing him give a shout of “Be right back!”.
Remus plopped himself onto the towel next to him, still panting from the run, but grinning from ear to ear. As he ripped open a water bottle and drank greedily, Janus couldn’t help but stare. Water glistened on his skin like jewels in the afternoon sun, plastering his hair down over his jaw and eyes. His eyelashes were barely fluttering against his cheekbones as he guzzled nearly half of the bottle, his adam’s apple bobbing with each swallow. The jut of his shoulder, almost touching his throat, taking his weight as he leaned back on his arm… the whole thing was fascinating. People interested Janus as a whole; the way they functioned, how they seamlessly picked up on little cues from others that Janus was still in the process of figuring out, even down to intricate biology of cells was incredibly captivating. But Remus was so much more than that. His voice when he spoke him to sleep, never mentioning it the next day, the way his dark eyes glimmered with hope when Janus agreed to eat with them, the twitch of his moustache as he covered a laugh at Patton’s corny jokes.
He was art, plain and simple.
Janus didn’t know if what he felt was romantic attraction. It sure felt like it, except it had never felt quite like this before. It wasn’t that he was asexual or anything, he was actually decently far from it. It was just how uncomfortable most physical contact made him that gave him the idea he might never have a partner in the way that he wanted. He wanted to hold hands, to cuddle, to kiss… but at the same time, he didn’t. That is, he didn’t know how he’d handle it. Sure, he’d had crushes in the past, cute boys from his classes or celebrities in the shows he hyperfixated on, and still the feeling of uncertainty had stayed. With Remus, something was different though. Never before had a crush ever felt so breath stealing, chest clenching, awe inspiring-
“Like what you see?”
Janus flinched, realizing Remus had finished drinking and was beaming at him with that stupid gorgeous gleam in his eyes. He looked at his lap immediately, feeling his face heat up.
“Sorry.”
“Not a problem,” Remus smirked, having the audacity to wink at him before standing up. “I’m going back in. Coming?” He reached out his hand, hopeful. Janus took a breath, acknowledging that this was his first time initiating contact since he’d arrived, and grabbed Remus’ hand. The surprise on the other’s face was almost enough to make him laugh. He pulled the younger to his feet, keeping a firm hold in Janus’ hand. And… that was okay.
Until it wasn’t.
The second his feet touched the sand, it was like alarm bells exploded behind his eyes. He couldn’t describe it, but it felt wrong. It gave in too much, light sprinkles of sand covered the top of his feet and instantly every nerve was on high alert. He ripped his hand from Remus’, stumbling backwards onto the grass again. The elder spun to him with concern.
“Snakey? What happened?”
“I- hmm, no. I can’t. Nope. No no no. Wrong. It… hmmmm. Can’t.” The last word dragged out as his brain seemed to disconnect from his mouth. His mind didn’t work, so focused on how every blade of grass was swiping along his soles too softly, too gentle, too much. His hands had curled into fists and he was fighting against everything inside him to scream bloody murder, because oh god the wind was brushing the hair onto the back of his neck and it tickled and make it stop make it stop!
Janus could vaguely hear someone shout, and the loudness floored him. Get away, get away, it’s too much it’s too much. The feeling of the grass was gone, and he was sitting on his beach towel, but the wind was still brushing his hair too much, so he grabbed at it uselessly, begging it to stop, stop, stop.
“What’s happening?” Roman.
“Is he okay?” Patton.
“Does he look okay?” Virgil.
“Janus, breathe. You’re safe.” Logan.
Yeah, he knew that. He knew, objectively, that the wind isn’t out to get him and grass doesn’t hurt and sand isn’t supposed to fry your nerves. That didn’t change the fact that it did for him. Somewhere in the back of his mind, it connected that they were seeing him have a meltdown, finally. But he couldn’t focus on that, not when someone was touching his arm why are they touching my arm LET GO!
He screamed now, he couldn’t hold it back anymore. His breaths were ragged and gaspy, hands ripping at his hair to try and stop the fluttering strands. Then there was a new sound, an engine, a boat, and with it came the deep bass of some terrible music and there were people shouting and his head was hurting, why was it hurting so bad?! New hands grabbed his wrists and he writhed, pulling back from the grip that was pulling his fists away from where they’d been hitting his skull, over and over, trying to just get his stupid brain to work. Come back to the present, ground yourself, do SOMETHING!
And then something was in his hands.
His eyes peeled open (when had he shut them?) and he saw the dark blue stress ball, almost crushed between his fingers. The hands were gone from his wrist, and he took a deep breath, relaxing his hand and watching the slime filled toy slowly return to its natural shape. It was just like one from his drawer, the first stim toy he’d ever gotten. Familiarity. He kneaded it under his fingers, enjoying the comforting texture, the color soothing to his sensitive eyes. Bit by bit he felt himself relax, still holding the toy inches from his face between stiff hands, letting his legs unfurl. Without thinking, he raised a shaking hand to his chin and did the sign for ‘water’, and immediately regretted it. It was just such a habit around his parents, the only other people who had seen him break down to this extent, how could he be so-
He flinched as a water bottle was pressed into his raised hand, the lid already taken off. The water was so good, settling his senses and grounding him, like he’d been in hyperfocus before and it was dulled now. He gave the stress ball another squeeze, captivated by the way the slime moved, not even flinching as someone snapped in front of him.
Looking up for the first time, his first instinct was to crawl into a hole and die. Logan was sitting in front of him, slowly putting the cap back on his water bottle before handing it back to Patton, who was standing just behind him. Roman and Virgil had begun packing the chairs and bags agonizingly slowly and quietly. Impressive; they were almost done and he hadn’t noticed until now. He turned to his left and his heart completely shattered. Remus was sitting statue still, a few feet away, with a look of pure fear in his eyes. He sat on the edge of his knees, like he wanted to pounce forward and hug him but was holding himself back. He appreciated that.
Logan snapped again and Janus turned back.
‘Better?’ He signed slowly.
‘You know sign?’ Janus responded weakly, confused.
‘Patton too. I go nonverbal as well. Are you okay?’
The younger nodded, returning his hands to the stim toy on his lap. ‘Yours?’
‘Yes.’
“Is he okay?” Remus whispered suddenly, drawing their attention. He looked so scared, like anything could break Janus and he was scared he would cause it. Oh. Did he think he caused this?
‘Not his fault.’
Logan looked between the two, a look of confusion settling in his face. “What?”
‘Not. His. Fault.’ He signed sharply, a frustrated hum emitting from the back of his throat. ‘Not his fault!’
“Remus, he’s saying it’s not your fault. What does that mean?”
“I- I took his hand, and then this happened…” Remus started, leaning back onto his feet ashamedly, “If that wasn’t the cause, what was?”
‘Sand.’
Logan’s eyes filled with understanding, and he responded, ‘Sand?’ as if to double check that he got the right sign. Janus nodded again, slightly thankful for the mute state he was in. He wouldn’t be able to explain this as well as Logan would.
“If I’m understanding right, then my first assumptions were correct. Janus, did you just experience a sensory overload?”
Janus could only nod, meeting his eyes shakily. This is the moment. Now is his segway. If Logan wasn’t already suspicious, he surely was now. And he’d rather not have to explain, or come up with some half assed excuse if he was confronted later on why sinking his foot into sand had made him break.
‘I’m autistic.’ He fingerspelled it, not knowing what the sign was, or if there even was one. There was a beat of silence, the twins and Virgil exchanging puzzled looks, and Janus couldn’t even bear to look at the two people who would have understood. All his fears came rushing back. Would they think he was lying, or seeking attention, or or or-
“Oh, sweetie,” Patton crooned, sitting cross legged beside Logan, “We thought maybe… well, the possibility came up in conversation before. Lo was the one who brought it up.”
“Yes. Though our experiences differ, you seemed to exhibit symptoms that are common to the ASD spectrum. I thought it feasible, but did not wish to offend or frighten you by mentioning it.”
“We thought that if you were autistic, it would be yours to tell us,” Patton smiled softly.
“Wait,” Remus interrupted, “Janus, you have autism?”
Janus’ nervous glance up must have been enough to clue the rest of the group in, because Roman sighed and ducked his head into Virgil’s shoulder while Logan messily signed something which roughly translated to ‘how dense can someone be’. Jan couldn’t tell if it was a joke or not, but he cracked a smile anyways.
“Shit. Dude, I’m so sorry,” Roman murmured into Virgil’s shirt, “All the times I made fun of you for not joining us or anything, that was way out of line. I truly apologize.”
The youngest gave him the worldwide gesture for ‘it’s okay’; not exactly ASL, but it got his point across. Everything was packed up now, and Janus realized the implications.
‘Home?’ He asked Logan, eyebrows scrunched together.
‘Yes. You need to rest.’ He was right, he was exhausted. Getting to his feet along with Patton and Logan, he reached down to grab his towel, only for it to be promptly swooped up by Roman.
“I… I got it. Don’t worry about it. Okay?”
As soon as Roman turned his back, Janus couldn’t help his heavy sigh. This was another reason he had refrained from telling anyone. He didn’t want to be seen as a burden, or worse, a child. He didn’t need help with menial tasks like grabbing a towel. Virgil and him lifted all the belongings again, with less complaining this time, and began the short trek to the truck.
‘He’s not babying you,’ Logan signed, as if reading his mind, ‘He’s just guilty. If you want my advice, get as much out of it as you can.’
“Logan!” Patton chastised, failing miserably at hiding a smirk.
“Guys?” Remus’ uncharacteristically timid voice prompted them to turn back, “Could I talk to Janus for a sec?”
“You understand he is unable to speak at the moment, correct?” Logan raised an eyebrow, probably coming off more harsh than he meant to.
“I know. Just… please?”
The other two shared a knowing look that Janus didn’t understand, before Logan turned to Janus. “Is that okay?”
The youngest nodded, watching over his shoulder as the lovebirds joined hands, leaving him and Remus alone. When he met his eyes again, he was standing much closer, eyes searching nervously.
“Maybe this will actually be easier since you can’t talk,” he laughed, before his face fell dramatically, “Fuck, that’s not what I meant. I’m such an idiot, I didn’t mean-”
Janus held up a hand quickly, as if to say ‘it’s fine, settle down’, holding back a snicker. He’d understand if someone was upset by the comment, but he’d learn to take Remus’ jokes lightly. He never meant to actually offend, sometimes he just… blurted without intending to. He rolled his finger in a ‘keep going’ motion.
“Shit. Okay,” He’d never seen Remus blush, or stumble over his words before. Not like this, at least, “Now, don’t feel obligated to say you feel the same or anything, okay? This is just, my feelings, and mine alone,” A deep breath, “I like you, Snakey. I like you a lot. More than… more than a friend.”
Oh.
Oh.
Janus was ninety percent sure he died right then and there. But Remus kept going, tripping over his words in a way that was so unlike him, and yet so perfect.
“I have for a while. I never said anything because I thought, maybe you disliked me? After today though, I think… well, maybe I was misinterpreting those signals. Like I misinterpreted today. That you didn’t want to be around me, no matter how hard I tried.”
Okay, Janus took it back. He wanted to be able to talk now, but his voice came out as another low hum, and he slapped his hand over his mouth, embarrassed. Remus pressed on, unfazed.
“Snakey, I swear to you, that you having autism doesn’t change those feelings at all. It’s not a bad thing, or a flaw, it’s just you. And everything about you is amazing, and perfect, and this is just another thing I get to learn about you. Any fears you had around telling us, telling me, you don’t need to have them.”
He’d never felt this kind of feeling before. In that second, he knew for a fact that this wasn’t a crush that he had on Remus. That wasn’t possible, because a crush had never made him want to break his social barriers like this. A crush had never made him want to make an exception, to stand on his tip toes and kiss him, even if the thought of a new touch usually caused goosebumps to rise on his arms. Because he felt so safe, so blissfully numb, so comfortable with Remus, that he’d be willing to give it a try.
This wasn’t a crush. This was-
“I love you,” Remus whispered, his statement accompanied by a large shaky breath.
He couldn’t say it back, not right now. Later, he would. For sure. Maybe a hundred times. So he did what he’d never thought possible and took that step forward, breaking his bubble that he’d always thought to be unbreakable.
It’s okay. You’re okay. This is okay.
For once, he actually believed it.
Janus reached a hand up, slowly, and rested it on Remus’ face. It wasn’t light, he couldn’t do half touches. It was solid, warm, real. Not a tickling touch that made him twitch, or a brush by that stole the very breath from his lungs. The positive response affirmed his will power, and he leaned up onto his tip toes. Remus looked absolutely stunned, but he didn’t pull away, he couldn’t if he tried. His breath caught in his throat as the elder glanced down, an unmistakable look to his lips.
Had Remus always had those green flecks in his eyes?
And he kissed him. Janus surged forward, pressing their lips together harsher than he’s intended, pulling a small gasp out of Remus. There was a whoop from the vague direction of where they’d parked, followed by a loud smack, and Janus couldn’t help the smile that tugged at his lips.
Remus’ hands were clasped at his chest, unmoving, probably afraid that if he touched Janus wrong, this would all be over. He’d have to explain half touches later. For now, he took one of his hands in his free one and guided it around, pushing it into the small of his back until Remus got the message to keep that pressure. He let out a small sigh through his nose, an action that sent a new round of butterflies exploding in the younger’s stomach.
This is okay.
This is all going to be okay.

Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation review
The original Dragon Quest was an extremely important and influential game that built the foundations to the Japanese role playing game genre, but was an extremely basic game that would end up outclassed by nearly any other RPG on the NES released afterwards that wasn’t completely incompetent, and while Dragon Quest II improved upon the foundation of the original, namely in terms of party progression, it was also a rushed, unbalanced, overly difficult and overall tedious experience. Despite its importance, Dragon Quest’s third installment would have to be a significant step up, and as luck would have it, it was, becoming another of the most legendary and important RPGs ever made, and firmly cementing Dragon Quest as a series that would stay around even to the present day, and how exactly this came to be is what we’ll be looking at today. The version I played was the SNES remake with a fan made English patch, so many of the names in the screenshots won’t match up with official translations. Other options are the Game Boy Color version, which was officially released in English, and even has a bit more exclusive content, namely a very time consuming sidequest and a bonus dungeon related to it, the Ice Cave, and much more recently, the mobile/Switch version, which is also available in English, and is based on the SNES version, minus some of its exclusive content. Be warned, there will be spoilers.
Story: In an unnamed land, geographically similar to the real world, the archfiend Baramos has appeared and unleashed monsters to plague the land, with its people’s woes ranging from groups of bandits robbing kings and kidnapping citizens, to monsters impersonating rulers, to entire towns being wiped out by the forces of Baramos, who ultimately plots to destroy the entire world. A hero from Aliahan, Ortega, once set out on a journey to slay the archfiend, only to fall in combat with a dragon over a volcano. The child of Ortega is thus given the task of slaying Baramos themselves on their 16th birthday, with the help of a group of adventurers recruited from Aliahan’s tavern.
On the surface, it’s still not much more of a plot than the first two games, and for the most part, that is true, but it’s still much more interesting simply because there’s much more going on. Many of the towns you visit are facing some sort of crisis, or have some sort of interesting circumstances around them, such as the immigrant town that slowly changes and expands as the game goes on, making them a lot more fun to discover and explore compared to the towns of the first two games. Additionally, there’s the famous and influential late game twist that strikes after defeating Baramos, namely the reveal of Zoma, Baramos’ superior, and the second world map of Alefgard, the setting of the first Dragon Quest. These two twists are a large part of what made Dragon Quest III so impactful when it came out in 1988, and considering the game presents itself as unrelated to the previous games, and that by the time you defeat Baramos, you’ll have explored the entire world, barring two small locations at most, they hold up fairly well even today. There’s not much more for me to add besides this, however, so it’s time to hop straight to the gameplay.
Gameplay: Dragon Quest III uses the same turn based battle system as the first two games, and besides things like new types of spells and weapons, not too much is changed with the combat itself. The biggest change DQ3 provides is to the party progression system. Instead of the Hero being completely alone like the first game, or gaining two fixed party members in the second, DQ3 allows you to build a party from the ground up, besides the Hero, who’s always required to be in the party, and has the exclusive Hero class, with well balanced stats and unique and useful spells. The party size has been increased to four at a time, and party members can be created and exchanged in Aliahan, with a total of 8 different classes they can be: warriors, slow, yet well equipped physical fighters that act has tanks and heavy hitters, priests, who specialize in healing and support spells and, contrary to most healers in RPGs, actually have decent equipment and offensive options, mages, typical magic attackers with great offensive spells, yet bad physical stats, martial artists, physical attackers with great agility who forgo most equipment and have a higher chance of landing critical hits, merchants, average at best fighters who have supporting abilities like being able to earn extra gold after battle, gadabouts, odd and clownish characters with bad stats besides luck, and a fixed chance to simply goof off and take random actions instead of doing as commanded, thieves, a class exclusive to the remakes, with great agility and several abilities that mainly help with exploration, and sages, who learn nearly every spell in the game, and have a wide selection of equipment options, yet cannot be put in the party to start.
Compared to Final Fantasy I, which had a similar class based party system, and came out only a few months before DQ3, this system actually has quite a few advancements. Most importantly, you’re never simply stuck with the party you start with. As long as you can make it to Aliahan, you can simply make new characters and swap out whoever you’re currently using. Obviously, doing this too much isn’t very practical, considering new members will be behind on EXP, but not being able to permanently lock yourself into an awful party combination is a big improvement alone. Party members who have reached level 20 can also change classes at Alltrades Abbey, resetting their level to 1, and cutting their stats in half, but keeping any learned abilities, meaning, if you were so inclined, you could make a mage with the physical stats of a warrior, a warrior with the speed of a thief, and so forth. Changing classes like this is also the only way to get sages into the party, and even then, only with the use of a Words of Wisdom book, of which only two exist in the game. This lends itself to a lot of creativity, and while I personally didn’t use this mechanic much, only turning my priest into a sage, it’s still an impressive level of complexity for a game this old.
The class balance is also fairly interesting, as beyond the upsides and downsides already listed, classes also level at different rates. Warriors are expensive to equip and very slow, but level the fastest out of the main offensive classes. Martial artists are, by contrast, very cheap, but have the third slowest leveling rate in the game, and the little equipment they do have is usually pretty difficult to get, especially their weapons. Merchants are guaranteed to eventually fall behind if you try to use them, but actually have quite a bit of exclusive, and good, equipment early on, and level the fastest out of everyone. Gadabouts are liabilities, but level second fastest, and can become sages for free once they reach level 20, making them an investment class. Despite how several classes are very obviously inferior in the long run, you actually can get away with some pretty unorthodox party combinations, at least earlier on. Take my party of hero, warrior, martial artist, and priest: very strong physically, but expensive to upkeep, despite the martial artist somewhat balancing it out, and lacking in offensive magic. While switching the priest to sage later on mostly fixed the latter issue, I was still left wishing I had taken a mage with me from the start several times, and yet I was still more than capable of finishing the game. While the difficulty has definitely been lowered compared to the first two games, that’s still a sign of ultimately successful balancing.
For some more combat related changes and improvements, some stats have been added or changed since the first two games. Resilience now determines how many hit points a character can gain when leveling up along with being added to physical defense as before, Wisdom determines a character’s potential magic points, as well as how soon they learn spells, with spells being delayed or expedited by up to three levels, and Luck determines how well a character can avoid debuffs and status ailments inflicted by monsters. Related to these stats, exclusive to the remakes is the personality system, which affects the stat growth of each character, with each party member gaining a personality during character creation or, in the case of the Hero, through a personality quiz given at the start of the game. While this generally doesn’t matter too much for casual play, assuming you aren’t unlucky enough to get the worst personalities on all your party members, it still adds an even greater deal of complexity, either allowing you to try to compensate for a character’s weaknesses, or add to their strengths. You could, for example, give a female warrior the Amazon personality, raising their strength growth, but lowering their agility, wisdom, and luck growth, stats they don’t care about much anyway. You can also change personalities during the course of the game, either temporarily by equipping certain accessories, or permanently by reading certain books scattered throughout the game, which further adds to the depth. It’s a bit overwhelming, but still pretty interesting to see.
Beyond the combat and classes, there’s still a lot of nice things to see. The bag from DQ6, which can hold an unlimited amount of items which can be taken out at any time, has been added, allowing easy inventory management on the spot. The Zoom spell now lets you return to towns of your choice, rather than the last place you saved your game, and while not every town can be warped to, it’s still a massive time saver. There’s a day night cycle, which gradually changes when traversing the world map and affects the state of the towns, and while it isn’t super prominent, there are a few towns pretty heavily affected by it, and you actually get a few ways to manipulate it later on. There’s also a few minigames added, once again exclusive to the remakes, those being the monster arena, where you can bet on computer controlled monster fights for the chance of winning money, and Treasures n' Trapdoors, which is basically a giant board game one of your party members can traverse, with several very valuable prizes available, both from winning and from landing on certain spots on the boards. Despite being very luck based, it’s creative and rewarding enough that the boards are actually a lot of fun to play, and the Switch version lacking this minigame entirely is a big shame. The remakes also added the Cloudsgate Citadel, a bonus dungeon accessible after defeating the final boss, with a superboss, Xenlon, waiting at the end. Defeating Xenlon within a certain number of turns allows you one wish, such as opening up a new Treasures n’ Trapdoors track, or resurrecting a certain character, and thankfully, you don’t actually need to traverse the entire dungeon again to refight Xenlon for more wishes, as a Zoom location is added only a few rooms away.
The biggest improvement DQ3 makes, however, is just how well the game flows. There’s still grinding to be found, yes, but generally, the game goes by much faster. Characters move quickly, the difficulty, as mentioned before, is much lowered, so you don’t need to grind 5 levels just to walk a bit north, and there’s just a lot of variety that keeps the game fresh all the way through, instead of becoming monotonous like DQ2. The dungeons are also much more reasonably designed compared to the giant, nightmarish mazes of DQ2, and while you do get a ship like in DQ2, it comes quite a bit later, keeping the amount of areas now available to explore from being as overwhelming. The obligatory key item fetch quest, this time collecting the six orbs to hatch the phoenix Ramia, is also much more reasonable to complete, with the orbs either being in locations that NPCs directly talk about, or being acquired by fighting bosses. Speaking of which, there’s also many more bosses than in previous games, and while they’re not as frequent as in most RPGs, they still add a nice bit of variety, along with actually being pretty challenging, in a good way. Overall, Dragon Quest III’s gameplay actually holds up very well, and just makes it a lot of fun to play. Even considering this is a remake with a lot of quality of life improvements, I was amazed that this was originally an NES game.
Graphics: DQ3′s visuals are quite nice, as the SNES version was made with DQ6′s engine. To give a comparison, whereas the games using DQ5′s engine were about comparable to the visuals of Final Fantasy IV and V, the visuals here are comparable to Final Fantasy VI, and considering that’s one of the best looking SNES games out there, that’s a pretty big leap. The character designs come out quite well, and many locations have unique looks to them, both towns and dungeons, with the Pyramid and Baramos’ ghastly castle sticking out the most to me. The enemy battle sprites are still great, and are actually animated whenever they attack, adding a lot of life to them.
Sound: As with the rest of the series, DQ3′s soundtrack was done by Koichi Sugiyama, and it’s once again a great soundtrack, even better than the soundtracks of the previous games. From the peaceful Small Shrine, to the iconic Overture, to the peaceful Heavenly Flight, to the world map theme Adventure, to the great final boss theme, Hero’s Challenge, it’s a soundtrack that’s a joy to listen to. It also gives towns different themes for both day and night, which is one of my favorite things to see in games.
Conclusion: Overall, I would give Dragon Quest III a recommended. It’s aged very, very well, and genuinely feels like it could have been on the SNES to start. Between the much deeper, yet ultimately accessible mechanics that give quite a bit of replay value, to much better overall design gameplay, graphical, and sound design, it makes a fantastic entry point for the series, if you have a liking for classic RPGs. Till next time. -Scout

Deep Rock Galactic Review
Within the darkest confines of mines full of arachnoid aliens the only comfort you shall find are your fellow dwarves, a mobile minecart named Molly...and gold. Mountains and mountains of gold. Spend your time completing missions on a wide variety of planets. Each with unique fauna and structures for the boons to spend on upgrades and alcoholic celebrations as you carry onto the next mining expedition. Be you and your relationships you build with your fellow dwarves be as durable as rock and stone in this wonderful cooperative 1st person shooter known as Deep Rock Galactic.
Playing as one of four classes, your mission as a Galactic Miner is to secure the valuable ores and fauna on a planet, destroy hostile creatures threatening the company’s main objective, and whatever else the bossman may throw your way. Through the vast odysseys of adventure venturing into the darkest caverns, you’ll find boon galore which you can spend at your leisure for upgrades to your weapons, cosmetics to further express your dwarfiness, and alcohol for your fellow miners. Your paycheck is for you to spend on whatever your heart desires. This gives a long lasting progression line to the player that is rewarding, consistently entertaining, and a reason to continue your tenure with the company. If a class’ weapon doesn’t feel satisfactory, you can find upgrades and features that can change the way it feels and looks to further adapt your game plan. If this doesn’t suit you, then you have access to new weapons after completing several missions as a class, so it’s quite easy to find a class that truly suits your playstyle.
Each class carries a specialty, the scout with his grappling hook, the driller with the expected drill, the engineer with turrets and a platform gun, and the gunner with a defensive shield. You always have the chance to play any class so try to experiment with what you enjoy. If you do find a class you fall in love with, you can specialize in it. Completing several missions with a class grants promotions, allowing more upgrades to be bought and gear to be obtained before finally prestiging. This allows you to upgrade your character further and show all of your co-workers how dedicated an employee you are. If teamplay isn’t your forte, you can always team up with a little robot named Bosco who can shed light on the caverns, shoot missiles, and assist with hostile lifeforms.
The game excels in its ability to enforce team unity as a necessity, from various hazards such as insects that can carry you off, to creatures which shall grab you from the ceiling and leave you helpless as you are devoured, all aspects of this game supports teamwork. Since the mission objective and rewards are shared amongst the group, there are no benefits of being a stingy dwarf. In fact, all mechanics of this game revolve around being a teamplayer to the organization. The Scout has difficulty truly mining from the walls without the assistance of the Engineer’s platform gun. The Driller is weak in traversal across large gaps in the Earth in which the Gunner’s zip line gun can solve. Even the core ammo which can be called in by using the team’s resources called Nitra in each cave is limited to four packs, one for each dwarf. With this in mind, it’s best to let your fellow employees grab a single pack of ammunition each since there is no reward for having a dwarf without ammo. Each class solves an issue with another class, and it is pertinent to try playing with a full group to fully round the strengths of each with their unique resources.
The worlds and strategies explored outside of the Orbital Space Rig vary vastly in each new mission. Some planets have large portions of the ground covered in flaming stone while others shall contain massive blizzards which obscure your vision and take away your heat. This, alongside the procedurally changing environment, guarantees the player a different adventure each time they venture out of the station. Speaking of the station, the federation provides its miners with quite the amount of benefits! Barrel kicking games and dancing parties await in the lobby with a wonderful AI barkeep eager to serve only the best alcohol credits can buy. The beers regularly go on sale for events and give buffs to the upcoming missions such as extra gold or stronger pickaxe damage. Nothing like a cold brew after a long mission to celebrate a great success. Just as each world is different, new employees shall be tasked with constantly changing, but similar missions. From mining Morkite on the walls to escorting a giant drill through a cavern. The one feature that remains similar amongst all the missions is the end: once the mission is complete, you have 5 minutes to return to a dropship while insects spawn from all crevices of the map to stop you. Goodluck.
The generous boons stuck to the walls of these beautiful caves do not come without price. A swarm of insectoids defend their territory with claw and acidic spittle against your lead. You’ll fight arachnids which crawl from the ceiling, flying creatures that shall carry you away, and more. Each come with their own weaknesses and strengths, and it’s up to you knowledgeable miners to find out first hand the ferocious beasts which dwell below. Shooting off the armor, ripping into the glowing gel sacks, or tearing into eyeballs, you’ll find it all down here. The swarm is a vast species with a singular hive mind purpose of halting your progress. It’s a strong antagonist which shall constantly challenge you and your teammates. Compared to other four person cooperatives with a similar premise such as Left 4 Dead, the swarm succeeds in staying as both a foe that is ferocious, yet is capable of being held back by a competent miner. It doesn’t place far too much stress on being stuck together in a team like GTFO...but it does it well enough to the point swarms are nearly unbearable to face alone.
The art style is cunningly simple yet expressive. Using voxels and polys, the game’s visuals succeed to give the player a brilliant amount of information without taking too much computer memory. This allows even low end rigs to play the game without a drop of sweat. In combination to using simple voxels, it allows the player to carve out the world quickly and easily with their pickaxe to show where the player has been and allows a smart dwarf to make shortcuts, arenas, and more with their surroundings. The art truly emphasizes the stone of each cave, fully immersing the player in an empty cavern full of the biggest crawlies and shiniest loot. This voxel style also assists in creating easily noticeable weak points and armor on insects. Alongside a wonderful visuals with no slowdown, the soundtrack is top notch, fully encapsulating the mood of a dwarven looter shooter. The music ramps up with each swarm and continues to push the miner forward to adventure as they carry on through the abyss. The sounds of the ambient bugs and strong guns also make for a killer impact and makes the guns truly feel heavy and effective.
Stick together with your fellow miners in this grand rendition of a four person cooperative shooter. Grab a beer, dance with your fellow employees, and most importantly: Rock and Stone.

The West Coast Trail; A Vancouver Island Adventure Of A Lifetime
Packing: Food/Clothes/Essentials | Booking: Reservations/Transport | Research | Facts | My Story | Start | Days 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 | Chez Moniques | Nitinaht Crab Shack
The West Coast Trail is one of the most, if not the most, iconic Canadian west coast adventure a hiker could ask for. It is a 75km test of both physical and mental endurance in one of the most stunning environmental settings you have ever seen. Not everyone that sets out for this great journey completes it, but those that do have a tale to tell for a lifetime and a forever bond with those they meet along the way.
Having completed this epic trail twice now, my approach is to blend a little bit of old and new into a (hopefully) wondrous tail that offers context, wisdom and insight to the journey, while describing the magical things you will experience and the challenges you will face. I’ve also prepared additional posts for your reading pleasure on Packing: Food/Clothes/Essentials and Booking: Reservations/Transport. So please, grab a hot cup of tea, throw on those comfy pjs and sit back and enjoy the read.
Handy References and Information Material
Every great hike starts with research, especially this one! If you haven't heard of it yet, look up the famed book Blisters and Bliss: A Trekker's Guide to the West Coast Trail by David Foster and Wayne Aitken. This awesomely 80′s comic styled guide adds a little light-hearted humour to a highly detailed account of the WCT which is revised roughly every couple years. It offers both trekking options (north to south AND south to north!) and gives you all the step by step nitty gritty deets in between including history, objects of interest, geological features and safety tips! I suggest taking it with you and read about the section ahead each night. Also, opt to keep it in a safe pack pocket, don’t put it in a plastic bag (I did this my first time and sadly lost my copy to the inescapable moisture and mold).
Check out the West Coast Trail Facebook Page! This page is not manned by Parks Canada. However, it is a great place to meet other hikers, find someone looking to ride share, ask questions and for advice, learn about recent developments and important information (washed out bridges, danger sections, wildlife sightings or concerns... even hear about annoyed hikers picking up others garbage...not kidding lol).
Oh! And there is also a Women’s West Coast Trail Page!
Parks Canada Website. Duh, right?! But you may not realize that Parks Canada has some handy info regarding what to pack (and what not to!), emergency items, wildlife warnings, necessary fees, maps, tide tables, tips and more to make your hike a happy one. Check out the Planning For WCT page here.
You'll also find online a plethora of websites, blogs and articles dedicated to WCT info, tips, advice, and more. I encourage you to read a few personal accounts to get a real life feel of what others experience. Here are some of my favourites (don’t let the names scare you!), plus a very cool and scholarly article from UofBC on the effects of colonial-style tourism in the area and on the local indigenous tribes written in 2020. Fascinating read.

The Facts
The West Coast Trail is 75 km long. That's on the map and, best as I can figure, relatively "as the crow flies". It does not account for the extra steps, the ladders, the climbing, the crawling, the descending, etc, you get the picture. Both times I've gone my fitbit has read almost double or more the distance in 'real ground covered'. For example, when they say its 5km from the Gordon River Trail Head to Thrasher Cove, my fitbit in both cases recorded over 12 km when all was said and done. When they tell you it takes on average 5-6 hours to do that stretch, and you're only covering 1km or less an hour, this is why. You will chuckle in the orientation, as many have, and think, "ya, if you're a SNAIL!", but you will soon realize it’s about the terrain and that you're essentially doing double or more the physical effort to cross it. The same is true for nearly all the trail, even the "easy parts".
Safety First - the majority of accidents and injuries occur in the first 13 kms on the south side of the trail, from Gordon River at km 75, to Camper Bay at km 62. The trail accommodates just over 7500 people a year. Of that, Parks Canada evacuates roughly 80-100 injured persons annually and Nitinaht villagers have claimed to ferry out 100-200 additional hikers off the trail as well, due to injury, misery, etc. It won’t be a bear or cougar that takes you out, it’ll be the wilderness itself. A fall from a wet log or slimy stone is the most common culprit, and it may not even be the fall itself, but what you land on. Sharp rocks, jabbing sticks, etc all cause serious injury. And it always happens when you're TIRED. Don't push yourself. Take a break, have a snack, don't go farther in a day than your body can handle. Better to be a day late than waiting 24 hrs in the bush with no morphine and a broken leg for a boat ride that surely will be agonizing. Just sayin' here...
The WCT historically was maintained for shipwrecked mariners. Many have lost their lives along this trail. I don’t understand how it doesn’t have its own ghost story yet! It has an amazing history with lots of ship wreckage to see along the way if you time the tides right.
Lastly, the temperate rainforest that engulfs the WCT is not only stunning but globally very rare, encompassing less than 1% of ecosystems across the earth. Here you will see plants, trees and animals that may not exist anywhere else on our planet. The Sitka Spruce for example is among not only the tallest trees in the world, but also the oldest, some 700-1000 years old. This means they have seen North America as it was before European Settlers touched it. They are revered by many and highly sought after by loggers, which often leads to conflicts. Many extremely unique animals also reside in the WCT, like the islands' black bears which are actually larger than mainland black bears with massive skulls and only one unique colour phase. The island is also home to cougars, Victoria's famous mini-deer and sea-wolves, the only wolves in the world that have adapted to life on a coastline, they call the Pacific Coast home. With a completely unique diet of seafood they are genetically different from mainland wolves and have also been known to swim in the ocean for many kilometers.
My West Coast Trail Story
Now, before we begin, I'll preface this by saying, don't mistake me for a pro; I am simply someone who has made it off the WCT twice [relatively] safely and lived to share my tale. If you are looking for expert advice I'd say check out the Parks Canada website or the Blisters and Bliss book. But if you are looking for a heartwarming and informative, real life account of the experience, you've come to a great place.
I am now amongst a lucky few that have had the enormous privilege to have hiked the West Coast Trail not only once, but twice in my lifetime thus far. I say thus far because this trail has such a special place in my heart I expect at some point I will likely attempt it again. It changed my life and has had an everlasting impact on the lives of those around me. I learned a lot about myself and even more about those closest to me. What I am capable of, the importance of preparation and planning, the bonds you create with people you meet along the way and the love of those that support you going and take care of things while you're gone. I simply couldn’t have done this without the support of my amazing husband, friends, parents and sister and my wonderful sister in law whom we stayed with this time. But most importantly I missed the encouragement and support of my mother-in-law who lived on the island and sadly has passed since my first trip. She and her friends played such an instrumental role in my first journey with my sister, buying us foods, housing us, driving us, and just overall being so excited to see us off, I truly missed her this time but I know she was there with me in spirit.
In this way the West Coast Trail is a life-shaping experience like no other. You will learn much about yourself, be in awe and hopefully inspired by the incredible natural world around you and you will meet fellow Canadians and global trotters and, in turn, become a part of their WCT story. Let me be amongst the first to congratulate you on this epic endeavor and wish you the happiest, and safest, of journeys and hopefully I can send you off a bit more well prepared for the adventure.
First Timers VS Second Timers
My experience as a first time WCT hiker was extremely different from my second expedition in every way possible.
The first time I hiked the WCT I went with my youngest sister Jenna. We had both hiked and camped before but this was a new experience and everything was raw, a bit scary, amazing and beautiful all at once. I think it just hit us both like a ton of bricks when we landed at the base of that first ladder across the Gordon River. Although Sharon had talked to me for months, mentally preparing me for the hike, when Jenna and I both looked up at the rest of our start group scaling that first beast, looming up from the small beach landing, I know we both had the exact same thought, like, "oh shit, this is for real...".
Why the WCT? Sharon, my good friend and co-worker, had previously attempted it before turning me onto it. Due to an unfortunate incident with her hiking companion, they had to turn in the towel. She has since rocked it twice more and was an absolute wealth of information, support and the wisdom that only an experienced female hiker, mom and athlete can be. Much of what I am sharing with you today began with her. She continues to inspire me every day with her ferocity and determination and boundless want for adventure.
At the time of my first hike in 2016, my mother-in-law lived on Vancouver Island and she and her best friend Jill had kindly arranged for us to stay at another friend's cottage just outside Port Alberni. The friend and her husband fed us well and the beauty of the setting was unimaginable. But the anticipation of what lay ahead weighed heavily on both Jenna and I and neither of us barely slept a wink. The next morning we had our last hot shower and flush toilet experience for the next 7 days and the 4 of us set out for the Gordon River Trail Head.
We piled into Jill’s car the following morning. The ride was long, on gravel switch back logging roads, but the supportive company made the nervous anticipation bearable. I feel like I did not appreciate the ride as much as I should have at the time, but a few 5 am bus rides (and much experience) later, I certainly cherish the thought my mother-in-law and Jill had put into making the beginning special for us both.
Since then, I've booked my island hike transports with the West Coast Trail Express bus. The folks there are super helpful and the experience has always been a good one. In 2018, a WCT facebook group was created which has made connecting with others looking for ride shares and doing the trail much easier AND more informative! You can read about this page and other research options at the top of this post if you missed them ;)
When 2016 saw Jenna and I land at Gordon River's Information Station, I was greeted with an amazing surprise... Sharon and Jackie (another friend) had pre-purchased for me a WCT t-shirt. I cried, there were no words. When 2021 saw Krista and I land at Gordon River's Information Station, I was greeted with a sense of the familiarity of the adventure and vicariously enjoyed the wonder of someone else now experiencing the trail for the first time... READY?!.. and INHALE... can you smell it..? the Adventure?! It's like greeting an old friend again, for the first time.
It's Like Those Choose Your Own Adventure Books, Where You Pick Your Ending...
Remember those..? Maybe..? When Starting the WCT, you can plan to start at either entry point, Gordon River to the south or Pacheena Bay to the north, or now even halfway at Nitinaht. There are advantages to all, so it just depends what is most appealing to you. Most people do the trail within a 6-8 day time frame. This gives a good balance of time vs pack weight. I always try to plan for an extra emergency day, just in case. Things happen here... Long stays requires more provisions and a heavier pack. Shorter stays (in my personal opinion) are extremely challenging, unless you have done the trail before, are very skilled in lightweight packing and are an expert hiker. I still wouldn't recommend it. Plus, if you're going that fast, you're rushing by so much, what's the point? If you've paid and taken the time to be here, enjoy it! That being said, when Jenna and I did the trail we were treated to watching marathoner and athlete Jen Segger run it in one day. ONE DAY. She currently holds the women's record for WCT completion at 13 hrs 44mins (as posted here on her page under 2016). Of course she had no pack and support runners with her and a camera crew. But as she ran by us I think both our jaws dropped. It was like watching Super Woman run by you and you were just lucky if her sweat spayed you as she passed by.
When you start out, keep in mind your pack is at it's heaviest. Starting at Pacheena Bay entry point means you'll be hiking the easiest parts of the trail first. You'll make excellent time here and cover the most distance over the shortest number of days. Although all areas of the trail offer exquisite and unique beauty, in my opinion the north end is the most magical. Maybe because by the time I reach it Im half delirious and most certainly exhausted so the easier hike is a much welcome break. Both times I've hiked the WCT I have opted to start at the southern trail head point known as Gordon River.
Starting at Gordon River means that you get through the most difficult terrain right at the beginning, when you're freshest, well rested and eager to set out. You also have the added benefit of anticipating the terrain getting easier (rather than harder). To me, this is the most logical approach and why I prefer this route and honestly, there is just something that seems slightly disillusioning about expecting something to get harder along the way. When Jenna and I first made it up that initial ladder we came across several groups finishing their hike. One in particular stuck out, a group of three female friends. We passed the first two who were happy and chatting and weirdly gave us a (mild) warning to disregard their companion, who was somewhere behind them. Ok... sure, we thought. Then along came the third girl... muttering, swearing under her breath, we contemplated what she might do to her companions if she caught up to them and we joked about how that likely was the end of that friendship. 2016 was a much busier year, pre-covid and all, and we met so many more people, Canadians, Germans, Chinese and Auzzies!
2021 though is the year of the Canadians! If you happen to head out on the WCT this year, although you will still experience a wide range of people (Canada is an extraordinarily diverse nation!), rest assured most currently reside within Canada. Hello Homies! It was, however, a much more muted WCT experience than my past one. Although the Parks staff assured me they have had lots of people come through (I asked!), and the online bookings are sold out, it seemed so much quieter day to day. At the time Krista and I arrived, Parks staff were still only doing outdoor basic debriefing, prior to which we were expected to watch an online information video covering the basics. This was in stark contrast to the very in depth orientation Jenna and I had to attend back in 2016.
Fellow Canadians, Tsk Tsk...
The biggest difference I noticed that could be as a result of the minimized debrief is the amount of garbage. There is NO garbage removal on the trail. Parks staff DO NOT haul garbage out (its a remote wilderness, do you really expect garbage men??). The WCT is accessible by foot (as in, you hike in... for 75 km) OR by boat, the latter being weather and safety dependant in extreme occasions (ie emergency evacuation). At each campsite we stayed, hikers THIS year (the trail was closed 2020) have left copious amounts of garbage. It’s in the bear bins, on the trail, the beach, in the outhouses... it’s EVERYWHERE. The worst by far was Camper Bay with stinking tuna cans and bags in every bear bin and Cribbs Creek, where the garbage pile extended to a massive bottle collection BEHIND the bear bin.
Why do sites have bear bins in the first place? Because human food and waste smells amazing to BEARS! So we lock it away to keep it, and us, safe. This does not mean a bear can’t smell it, it just means they can’t access it. Now, what happens when food rots and gets stinkier...? Of course it's more enticing. This draws bears, and other animals, to the campsite, which puts your safety, and the safety of each camper, at risk. I have to give Krista major kuudos here because that girl dug in deep, cleaned someone else's mess at each site we stopped at and even hauled out other people's stinky gross trash. Please give her a round of applause for thinking about you because she deserves it. And as Canadians, seriously, we can do better right??
Da' Debrief
Apologies, now that’s out, let's get on. During our debrief we learned some important key points.
2021 has seen unprecedented amounts of animal sightings and encounters. Primarily bear and cougar. There has also been more daytime sightings of wolves, which is considered extremely rare. With the trail closed in 2020, lack of human presence has caused a larger wildlife presence. Be aware, practice safety, travel in groups. Groups are also being asked to accommodate single hikers to reduce risk.
There is a lot of maintenance to be done that wasn't able to be accomplished in 2020 due to the pandemic. Be prepared for washed out boardwalks, bridges and rotten boards. There is also fewer Parks staff to help with this upkeep. Luckily, local members of indigenous tribes, called the Trail Guardians, historically help in a huge way with this and you may even run into them on the trail! We saw their team arrive in their new boat leaving Walbran and at Pacheena we spoke to a Parks staff who's uncle is on the team. It's a small world here.
Following the debrief, the Parks staff escort you to the Gordon River ferry. The fellow here takes you across and plops you down on the small sandy beach, gathers up any hikers waiting for a ride back and heads off on his way. And there you are, left to stare at a huge ladder, really, the first of many.
up, Up, UP You Go!
In 2016 Jenna and I patiently waited at the end of the line to be the last two up the ladder and I tackled the climb with my 50lb pack in tow (phew!). In 2021 Krista and I were the only two standing on the beach, me revelling in my 'barely there' 38lb pack. The trail was our oyster!
The trek from Gordon River to Thrasher Cove is the most challenging and physically demanding on the trail. We left on the 11:30 ferry and finally walked into Thrashers Cove at 5pm - Yes, it DOES take that long. You actually don't see many ladders, a few here and there, but best believe you are still climbing! You scramble up rock faces, you squeeze past trees, you choose your footing extremely carefully and all the while up, up, UP you GO! Even over rocks and hard ground the trail is fairly well worn and easy to follow... most of the time. A short while in you come to the first bridge over the first creek. I have stopped here both times to fill up water bottles, but beware, the scramble back up is more difficult than it looks this year due to the fallen trees. Mountain Goat level scuttling expertise is advised! Much further along, not far from Thrashers, you'll eventually comes across the famed Donkey Engine! This year you will find it to be directly in your path, where as in 2016 I’m quite sure we looked down on it somehow from a higher elevation. Either way, it’s epic and makes for an amazing photo op! To think that thing was hauled by beast and hand up that hill still blows my mind.
Along the way we met a very nice gentleman named Wilson who had intended to hike the WCT with his son. Unfortunately, due to a graduation re-scheduling mishap his son was unable to come, but Wilson decided to soldier on. He was incredibly happy, thoughtful and polite and asked if we minded if he tagged along as we hiked. He regaled us with tails of his trails, immigration to Canada, his wife and family and much more; he was a fascinating fellow! With the wildlife warnings this year, Parks staff request that no one hike alone, if you can, allow a solo hiker to tag along so everyone can stay safe. We graciously obliged and enjoyed his company and great conversation for a couple more days until we parted ways at Nitinaht comfort camping.
Thrasher's Cove is an amazing, but small, campsite. I recall vividly in 2016 the trail down to the beach being extremely treacherous, with steep and slippery embankments and so many ladders! By comparison our 2021 descent seemed like a cake-walk. Here I was, boasting to Krista the challenge that lay before her, but when we got there it was literally a quick hop and skip down. She found anything I said after that to be hard to believe and was convinced I was totally embellishing. It really made me realize how MUCH the trail changes and what dynamic metamorphosis must have occurred in 6 years! I also realized how hard Trail Guardians and Parks staff must work to maintain all this constantly worn out infrastructure. It must a BEAST. Be warned, if you arrive to Thrashers too late in the day it will be tough finding a spot. If this happens to you, check out the south side of the beach, sometimes there's a bit more space there. Ironically, I have set up my tent in the exact same spot both times, right in front of the tiny triangle cave around the rock wall on the south side of the beach. I have claimed this spot now.
Knock, Knock, It's The Ocean!
This is also where knowing how to read your tide tables is extremely important. While camping on the beach you must pitch your tent above the high tide line. The high tide line is where you can see the sand was last wet on the beach. It's not where the water is when you arrive. Look for the wet point on the sand and keep your tent a few good feet above that. When Jenna and I first arrived at Thrashers, I was confident in my tide table reading skills; being from Alberta, I took the time to learn how to read them in advance. But, during the orientation the Park staff had warned our group that our first night was due to be the highest high tide of the year - intimidating to a couple prairie girls! And, which is also a thing if you read up on the moon cycle! (Actually there is a lot of news this year on the effects of the moon's impending orbital wobble on tides, its a fascinating read if you're interested!). So, naturally a bit cautious and overly leery of the horror stories of campers waking up to soaked tents in the middle of the night, my poor sister was worried sick. Exhausted but too afraid to sleep, I promised her I'd stay up till high tide to make sure we were safe. She soon passed out and I settled in reading my book. But the surf was loud and near, a thundering, crashing rukus with each wave and about 2 hours in my sister jolted straight up in her sleeping bag, scaring the ba-geezus outta me crying out 'IS IT HERE?! IS THE OCEAN HERE YET?! ", big-eyed I just stared, then broke out laughing; I settled her back down, reassured her we were safe, now passed the time of concern, and wiggled down into my own sack to drift off. It's still an inside joke to this day and once in a while we chuckle to each other about the time the ocean came knocking.
2021 brought me its own surprise when at 4am I awoke to an unusual scratching noise against our tent next to my head. We had wrapped our rain covers around our [empty] backpacks and snugged them up against the tent to stay dry and save space. Apparently the local otter family found them fascinating and decided to check them out on their morning stroll. An alarm clock certainly fit for the WCT.
It's A Beach Walk, Not A Cake Walk
Leaving Thrasher's Cove you have two options! You can take the beach route if you time the tides carefully OR you can take the inland route. In 2016 Jenna and I sojourned the inland route. Although the inland hike was pretty, if I'd found the trek down to Thrashers tough, the trek back up would've been classed insane. Sharon’s favourite saying is, what goes down must go up. In 2021 Krista and I timed the tide, leaving at 7:30am, to take the beach route. Although we'd planned to avoid what turned out to not be a bad climb, I'd really wanted to see the famous sea caves! The sea caves themselves were nothing short of AMAZING. There is just no other word. I was so in awe that in my mind they seem to take up almost 3 days of our trip, not just half an hour on the second day.
Although we'd planned to aim for Cullite Creek Campground day 2, we hit a major snag. As we traipsed along, well after the sea caves, we came to a rocky sea shelf that rose high out of the water. As you look up, you might catch a glimpse of some buoys, which commonly mark the beach access to the trail and campgrounds. Thinking this was our access back onto the trail, as you must go inland from here to Campers, we headed up along the higher shelf. We passed an unusual 'Danger' sign. We looked around, but could not identify anything that seemed out of the ordinary for where we were. We kept on. We came to a similar sign on the rock, but again, failed to see what was obviously dangerous. Wasps? Bear den? Surge Channel? There was no fallen bridge, no down ladder. Everything seemed ok. We reached the buoys, and Krista lifted her leg to step over a small trickle of a water... That's when it happened.
Danger on the Trail...
Before she could even complete her step, both feet flew out from beneath her and her whole body, pack and all, smashed onto the rock shelf. She began rocketing like a she was on a pro waterslide down the embankment towards a 9 foot drop into the water pool below. I had the wherewithal to shout out 'grab a rock!', and in the 3 seconds that seemed like 3 hours, I had the presence of mind to ponder how I might explain this to her mother back at home and 4 year old son if things went sideways... but with a 38lb pack on myself and being a few feet behind, there was no way I could move fast enough to do anything but yell.
Luckily, mid-slide, she managed to grab a handhold just long enough to stop and get some footing. Crisis averted, but the damage was done. Wearing shorts, she was sporting some nasty road rash on her cheek and arm, but most of the damage was buffered by the hoodie she'd had tied around her waist. She was bruised, but she was lucky.
Feeling pretty roughed up, we opted to stay at Camper Bay instead and rolled in about 1pm where we washed and treated her ailing buttocks and gave her some much needed pain meds. Along came a few more groups and we felt a bit less sheepish learning 2 of them had also had the exact same experience. Pride slightly less wounded, we made some new friends for the chatter and laid back and chilled for the afternoon. On your parks provided trail map, you will see a small note in red pointing to BA 'B' (beach access B) that warns about a dangerous slope just past the surge channels after Owen Point. It's not kidding.
If you stay at Camper Bay, it's a lovely and large campsite with lots of room for everyone. However, it has a habit of getting very windy, like all the time, and the only time it's not is when the sun goes down. If you're early enough, grab one of the sheltered tent spots in the woods/taller grass along the creek side. It also has a rep for early morning rain and fog. Something about the geography here seems to create its own micro-environment. If you walk out along the beach at low tide and cross the creek to the north, you'll see some neat tidal pools and caves in the rock wall. In the one with the small pool of water you might see a single lonely fish with the pool all to himself. I hope one day the tide washes him in friend.
Reminiscing...
Ironically, day 2 in 2016 was also the day I had a mishap of my own. Tired and worn down, toddling after Jenna across a log bridge the width of my car, I misstepped. My feet were somehow gone and in a second I found myself sitting on my ass, straddling the log instead of walking on it. I peered down into the 6 foot drop below. Completely in disbelief I suddenly realized Jenna was yelling at me "Are you OK?!" ... Yes! I was! I was ok. Nothing was broken, hurt or otherwise. But it was a wake up call. If you are tired, take a break, don't push on or try to keep up with someone faster. Only hike as fast as your slowest hiker and be patient. Take a breath and remember, the goal is no one dies out here... hopefully.
Gone Are The Days Of Legendary Mud And Tilting Ladders That Make You Poop ... Just A Little
The few days that followed are a bit of a blur. There's so much to see and so little blog space to include it all! We left Campers Bay on a foggy, rain mist morning at about 10am. Since we had to take the inland trail there was no worry about racing the tide on this stretch. We chatted with the couple we met the night before (Mat and Lauren from Calgary!). Everyone was a bit tired that morning.
Although we saw some mud, with a historic heat wave just prior to our trip in 2021, the legendary mud pits that the WCT has typically been known for were non-existent. In 2016 Jenna and I spent most of our inland trail time figuring out how to cross mud-holes, watching where each other stepped and trying not to fall in up to our armpits (I kid you not). This time, there was no mud and if you disagree with me, go again after it rains. I dare you.
This is also the section where we saw the most ladders, most notably through Cullite Creek, which was sadly such a trickle there was no need for the cable car, we just rock hopped across (with ease). We saw some really cool art done along the trail by the Guardians in the new bridge and log cuttings, some even signed their names! Have you tried making a curve with a chainsaw? I was impressed.
This section also has a neat and unique stretch of boardwalk that goes through a fragile wetland. Sections of the boardwalk were out, it looks easy, don't let it fool you!
A brand-spank'in new suspension bridge calls Logan Creek home! In 2016 Jenna and I had to climb a harrowing series of crazy, half-tilted ladders to get to the bridge. I recall my favourite as being the third ladder in a tower, that was so amazingly on a 10 degree angle sideways, and scaling it with my 50lb backpack. It was all I could do not to roll off and meet a perilous end at the bottom of the gully. Today the beautiful new bridge almost disappointed with the ease it took to cross it. NO more ladder climbing, you just walk up the stairs and off you go!
We arrived in Walbran Campsite at 5:30, the creek is perfect for swimming if it’s warm enough. Several groups had a run-in here with a couple breaking the fire ban policy. People on the WCT take this seriously, keep in mind if you start a forest fire here, there’s no where to go and it puts the homes of indigenous peoples at severe risk too. We all simmered, had a tasty meal, chatted with our travel companions, explored the beach a bit and turned in for the night, thoroughly exhausted.
We spent the next two days going from Walbran Campsite to Cribbs and then to Tsuisiat Falls. Due to a problematic and confrontational cougar in 2021 there is no camping permitted along the trail between kilometer 34 to 38. So, naturally, your last stop prior to Nitinaht Narrows is Cribbs Creek.
The Stretch from Walbran to Cribbs is basically all beach walk. The beach is lovely, but don’t let 'beach walk' fool you. It’s just as challenging to walk in sand as it is through forest... and you thought it was going to be easier, didn’t you?! It's like walking through snow without snowshoes and being 30lbs heavier...what a Canadian thought. But! Fear Not! along this stretch is also the famed Chez Moniques burger stop and the Carmanah Lighthouse! The lighthouses are closed to the public this year due to covid, but it’s still a sight to behold as it beams brightly through the fog.
The Legend That Is Chez Moniques
In 2016 Jenna and I made a critical, but common, food planning error. We packed meals based on what we felt was healthy and would give us energy, without accounting for taste. In other words, we packed a lot of dry lentil-based meals that tasted awful and took forever to cook and I couldn't have forced down my throat if you had paid me. I love beans, but dried lentils on the trail... yech! You can read more about our cautionary tale in my food section, and if you're uncertain about foods to pack, it’s worth the read!
So, sufficed to say, that year we had the absolute pleasure of experiencing Chez Moniques in it's prime. It was incredible. Here we were, in the middle of nowhere, exhausted, starving (I was anyway lol), and run off our feet. And out of nowhere arose this mirage of a tent with burgers, fancy meals, peach ciders and more! My god it was intense. We kicked off our boots, stuffed our faces, chatted with Monique, the legend herself, and I protectively cradled the best Okanagan Cider that had ever touched my lips while we waited for the tide to recede. It was magical.
Sadly, between 2017-2018 both Monique and her husband tragically passed away. It was a blow felt around the world by all those who had passed through their doors and experienced their generosity. There is a lovely documentary attributed to their memory here. Today, in 2021, following a devastating 2020 with no business, Monique & Peter's grand-daughter, Katrina Knighton is trying to carry on the dream though the restaurant will be renamed as Nytom. We heard lots of chatter and some hikers did actually see her in person, but unfortunately there are some struggles, including keeping up supply levels, which they are walking in for 1.5 hours (!). We missed them this year, as did many hikers, and I was so sad Krista would not experience it. But! They are rumoured to have services most often morning and around 5pm. Katrina is also very active on the WCT Facebook page, so feel free to drop her a line there for more info!
We arrived in Cribbs Creek at about 2:30pm. It was the end of our Day 4 and what a campsite it was. Lovely soft sand under your toes and beautiful beach. There is nothing here for swimming but we had the most amazing sunset view on the rock shelf that night. Although it didn't rain while we were on the trail, this was the first time we'd seen the sun since we left Victoria.

The Magical Beauty Of Nitinaht And The Crab Shack Of Your Dreams
We left Cribbs Creek about 9am and stuck to mostly inland trail. Other hikers going the opposite way had warned it was very overgrown but we honestly had no problems with it; it was a little underused, but keep in mind they hadn't seen the south side yet. We made excellent time and arrived in Nitinaht Narrows at 1:09pm. The journey is absolutely stunning. There is a new bridge over the creek at Dare Beach and the forest walk is lovely. The bridge over the Cheewhat River offers great views also. You cannot take water from the river itself but after the bridge there is a freshwater stream marked by a wooden sign if you need it and soon you will come across an old Cabin. When you arrive here, turn around and see the new and amazing Ditidaht home across the river. It has changed a bit, likely with the drought, but in 2016 Jenna and I referred to this stretch as "the place that Disney films are based on". Ivy clung all the way up the trees and just as you wrapped your head around that, the trail winds it's way through a silent coniferous forest where you could almost hear a pin drop, followed by a magical wetland lake with flowering lilly pads the size of your head. But none of this compares to Nitinaht Narrows.
As you walk along the trail, just a few short minutes past the lake, the path will turn from boardwalk to dirt and as you round the bend you will suddenly walk, with no warning, right into Nitinaht! It has caught me by surprise each time. We strolled down the walkways to the dock, left our packs safely on the bench and made our way to the Crab Shack. The blue-green waters of Nitinaht Narrows is something to behold. When you peer over the side of the wharf you see schools of small fish so thick you could almost surely touch them. When I dream of paradise, I dream of here.
Nitinaht Narrows was only recently made an 'official' entry and exit point by Parks Canada in 2014, you can read more about it here. But prior to this, older community members witnessed the inception and rise of the WCT as we know it today and watched it grow. Ferrying hikers across the narrows has become a task handed down from generation to generation. Connected to the ocean, it has tides about 10 minutes apart and historically, many years ago, hikers did drown trying to swim across before getting swept out to sea, naively misjudging the calm-looking waters. About 3 kms past the narrows, the Ditidaht band offers comfort camping options to those looking to settle and day hike the trail or in need of a break from the grind. This is marked with a sign and you will see it on the trail. The crab shack itself has also recently built new cabins as well which start from roughly $100/night (houses 4 bodies and you use your own sleeping bag) and goes up to ($200 and $300) where bedding is provided. They also offer tent platforms for a modest $30/night fee.
The Nitinaht Crab Shack is owned and operated by the Edgar family. They are kind, light-hearted, hospitable and will make you the best meal you have ever had. They work extremely hard and have a great sense of humour. A family member told me the previous day they had served a group of 20 lunch all at the same time! Hippie-Doug was their ring leader that day and he manned the ferry, that took us across the narrows to complete our journey, along with a sweet old chocolate lab you will see in many a hikers' photos. If you catch him at a slow moment he might share a joke and and story with you. But don't leave until you have warmed yourself thoroughly by the wood stove, had the best meal this side of Canada and picked up some treats for the road. The ferry finishes for the day at 4:30pm and then Hippie-Doug settles in for a much deserved break, a meal, and maybe a drink, so don't be late!

Tsu-Tsu-Tsusiat!
We left the warming comfort of the Nitinaht stove at about 3pm and headed on our way. We saw our new friend and traveling tag-along Wilson off at the Ditidaht Comfort Camping site and continued on, arriving at Tsusiat Falls by 6:30pm. You can't see the falls from the beach, but if you reach the hole in the wall at Tsusiat Point, you're just minutes away.
In 2016, the first 5 days of our hike Jenna and I had the most amazing weather. On our 5th day, after the crab shack, while the sun beamed a balmy 25+ C, we ditched our packs on a slope of sand with gentler waters between Nitinaht and Tsusiat Point and ran into the ocean up to our knees, jumping the waves and being astonished at their strength. We laid on the beach afterwards and soaked in the sun. When I think of my little sister, I often think of this carefree day and smile. Enjoy the journey as you go, or you’ll miss the best parts.
Tsusiat Falls is a popular campground. When we arrived the beach was packed. According to 2021 Parks regs, you can only stay one night here to minimize environmental impact. The beach was very different from what I remembered, but the falls were ever glorious. We threw on bathing suites and while Krista enjoyed the brief sun, I took a dip in the beckoning water.
The next morning, with Krista not feeling hot, I'd aimed to get up early and walk back to the Hole In The Wall with my Nikon DSLR camera. When we passed by the day before it was high tide and the Hole was under sea water. However, after a delay, Krista decided to come with me. We packed up, left our bags at Tsusiat and strolled back to the hole together, and a better decision it was. I’d watched a group ahead of us pass through an hour ago, but beneath their tracks you could make out a fresh set of cougar prints. Since low tide was at 10am that morning, that means the tracks were very recent and could only have been made since the water receded. Food for thought.
Darling Bears You Might Be Cute, But I Don't Want To Snuggle
The last 2 days on the WCT (or your first two, depending where you start) are the easiest to hike and where you make up the most ground. We'd intended to land at Darling River Campsite (approx km 14), which from Tsusiat (approx km 25) would make it about an 11 km day. Most of our fellow travellers whom we had become familiar with were aiming for Michigan Creek though, which would add 2 km to our 6th day, but save us that on our 7th and final day out. We decided to see what the day held and if we arrived at Darling early we might continue on. WELL.... what the day held was not entirely what we expected.
In 2016 Jenna and I walked the beach hike between Tsocowis Creek and Michigan Creek. It had started to rain the night before and by morning was a light, but steady, downpour. We donned our rain gear but by noon, and halfway through our distance, it was clear that Jenna's rain jacket was not waterproof. Though she had tested it prior to leaving, it turned out not to be up to WCT-level rain. As we continued on poor Jenna got wetter and wetter and by the time we reached Michigan, she was soaked through to the bone. Water pooled in her boots, and she shivered so hard she couldn't help me with the tent. Realizing this could get worse quickly, I popped the tent, got her changed and snugged into her sleeping bag ASAP. Then I worked on adding a tarp. When the shivering stopped we got a warm meal into her and passed our time taking turns winding up our emergency radio and trying to maintain the faint signal from a long forgotten US talk station till darkness fell. It poured the entire next day as well for a total of over 24 hours straight and our photos at the Pacheena lighthouse are in plastic emergency ponchos.
In 2021 Krista and I opted for the inland trail as we'd previously made better time this way. There is lots to see here, another Donkey Engine and a rusty old grader, and I absolutely love the Billy Goat Bridge. The trail threw us for a bit at Tsocowis Creek, there, phantom branch-offs seemed to lead off and abruptly stop. You have to go down the ladders to continue the inland trail portion (OR access the beach). However, just passed Orange Juice Creek, it was quite clear this section of trail was not well used recently... by people anyway. It was eerily dark, overgrown and passed by what looked like long lost abandoned campsites in caves along the rock wall. As we passed by we heard something stir in the dim light, knocking over an old cup, and we nervously quickened our pace. We began to see pile after pile of fresh bear scat, some so fresh that by the time we reached Darling we figured we must be just behind it. Making a lot of noise we made our way to the beach and relief washed over us as we recognized people half a km ahead... our fellow Albertans, Mat and Lauren! But when they stopped suddenly and started to back up we knew something wasn't right.
Just ahead of them on the beach was our bear. And big guy he was! They figured a lone male. They managed to scare him off and once we caught up the 4 of us made our way as a group to Michigan Creek just down the beach where we figured there was relative safety in numbers.

Bitter Sweet Goodbyes
Our last day from Michigan to the Information Station at Pacheena was a super short one. We were the last hikers to leave Michigan at 8am and among the first ones (ironically) to reach the Parks office at 11:01am. The path is very well maintained and an easy hike. You'll also see a lot of day hikers here, many with dogs. Along the way are some cool sights you won't want to miss, so don't be too quick to rush out. The abandoned dirt bike isn't going anywhere fast anymore, but be sure to check out the sea lion rock just passed km 10. You may even hear them from the trail! Just before the sea lions you'll also pass by the Pacheena Lighthouse. Again, due to covid, you cant access the grounds but you can totally snap a quick pic! The area has so much bear activity Parks Staff joke about running 'bear daycare' here so be vigilant. Two wonderfully enthusiastic young ladies we met along the way carried an amazing tune; Im sure they must've charmed away any "would be" encounters.
In 2016 there was no km 1 sign on the trail and in 2021 there was still no km 1 sign lol. Both times I raced past km 2 and then later wished I'd taken a pic with it. You'll want it as proof! We walked the very last km along the beach, where firm sand makes for easy going. There were bear sightings of a mother and cubs here just before we arrived. We missed them, but were lucky enough to get some great foot-print photos. The very last bench you'll see on the trail is emblazoned with the word 'PARKS'. We sat here for an eternal minute and took some photos. As we strolled towards the Information station I couldn't believe it was over again so quickly.
Looking back, even after time number two, it feels more like a dream. The first time I walked off the trail in 2016 I eagerly anticipated a hot shower, was thoroughly disappointed at finding I had no quarters for to pay for one and I spent the 5 hour bus ride home starving and trying to sleep on a roller coaster. Perhaps not such a glorious end, but I realized I had achieved something few people would in their life time and of that I was SO proud of Jenna and myself. We did it.
When I arrived back at work Sharon had the most glorious little bouquet of flowers for me and she glued tiny cut out flags of all the major trail milestones to skewer sticks throughout. It brought tears to my eyes.... she told me this, "for a while, you will think to yourself, I am NEVER going back to that EVER again. And then, slowly, you will forget all the bad parts and the thought will creep in... maybe, perhaps, I might try it again... and you will find yourself looking it up once more". And she was right, I did. And I am so glad I did... I might even do it again.
