“My dad had an Omega growing up,” he says, then explaining how his “Nana” wore her mother’s watch. “From a younger perspective, I remember thinking that they were a signifier of adulthood and sophistication.” But now, the Oxfordshire-born actor uses them to help tap into different roles. “I know people talk about music that gets them into character, or fragrances or jewellery, but for me, I've played many characters who've had specific watches. When you're trying to build a character, you realise the significance of that.”

While many have come to know Bailey as the lead in the show’s second season – it’s Netflix’s most popular English-language TV series, accruing 627.11 million hours of watch time in four weeks, bumping season one to second place – Bailey's career started in childhood.

He played Gavroche in the West End production of Les Misérables at nine years old, and moved into TV in his twenties with detective drama Broadchurch, Michaela Cole’s Chewing Gum and Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Crashing. But it was his roles on stage – an Olivier Award-winning performance in Company as well as Mike Bartlett’s Cock, to name a few – that helped him grow as an actor.

“I think you have to go back to stage to learn your craft, because you have to do it every single day,” he explains. “You learn how to tell stories in different ways, and then you take that craft and you put it on screen. Adapted from Thomas Mallon’s 2007 novel, his next project, Fellow Travelers, follows a romance between war hero Hawkins Fuller (Matt Bomer) and religious idealist Tim Laughlin (played by Bailey) from the early-Fifties Lavender Scare – a US policy that saw gay and lesbian government employees fired due to a moral panic about homosexuality – to the ‘80s AIDS crisis.

But despite a seeming predisposition for stories from a bygone year, Bailey is more interested in the universality of people's characters: “The nerd in me is obsessed with the idea of the consistency of humanity, and how people fundamentally stay the same even with the evolution of the world around them.”

Samhain, an old Celtic harvest celebration, may be traced back more than two millennia to where Halloween got its start. This occurrence signalled to the Celts the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. A period associated with the passing of life and shrouded in gloom. They believed that on the evening of October 31, the barrier separating the worlds of the living and the dead became more permeable, making it possible for spirits to move more between the two realms. This has lead to the creation of All Saints Day and All Souls Day, observed on November 1st and 2nd. Even while these celebrations honoured saints and the spirits of deceased loved ones, echoes of the ancient Celtic practises were still observed.

Drag Culture continuation:

Anyone who devoured the US series Pose in one gulp will be familiar with drag balls, which started in New York in the 1970s. These competitions required participants to own the runway in the best drag possible in order to impress the judges and walk away with a slew of awards. This is where the drag mother became popular. Seasoned queens would take up-and-coming drag performers under their wing and teach them how to operate a stage as well as how to dress. They frequently offered a home for young people who were going through a tough time in their lives, not simply those who wanted to enter the drag world. As a result, drag moms were regarded as the leader of their House, holding responsibility for a whole drag family. Their drag protégés were permitted to assume their mother's surname, or even have their stage name selected for them by their mother. The House of Xtravaganza and the House of LaBeija are among those featured in the 1990 drag gala documentary Paris is Burning (which inspired Madonna's Vogue).

The Stonewall Riot of 1969 was a protest by drag queens, most notably Marsha P Johnson, against police raids on homosexual establishments in New York City, which resulted in the formation of the homosexual Liberation Front. Over the 1970s and 1980s, the campaign for acceptance and equality gained prominence, with Harvey Milk being the first openly homosexual man elected to public office in San Francisco in 1977. That favourable image gradually permeated the mainstream. The famous Divine starred in various films directed by John Waters that achieved crossover popularity (Divine played Edna Turnblad in the original Hairspray). RuPaul was on the verge of worldwide recognition by the early 1990s, combining a drag character with a singing career that featured a duet with Elton John. The first season of Drag Race premiered in 2009. Its blend of tasks, costume design, sketches, and impersonations has made it a must-see television show for a surprisingly wide audience (Dame Judi Dench is a major fan) and has even changed the language itself. Here are just a few examples of drag terminology that has made its way into our lives as a result of the programme.

Shade: An insult, either spoken or expressed through body language. To ‘throw’ shade is to openly disparage someone, whether or not they are in your presence.

Read: Drag queens will often meet in a metaphorical arena known as the library to openly exchange insults with each other. This is the act of reading, a playful sport where the aim is to throw the cleverest, most ingenious piece of verbal takedown at your opponent. It’s important to note that reads usually finish with all involved on good terms.

Realness: When a drag queen is given a theme to meet, outfit-wise, the intention is to blend into the genre as though born into it. Manage that successfully and they are ‘serving realness’. For example, if a runway theme on RuPaul’s Drag Race is The Western and a contestant executes a perfect combo of boots, gingham, Stetson and pigtails, they are ‘serving up cowgirl realness’.

Sickening: Get your catwalk look just right and you’ll be one sickening queen. Basically, you’re just so fabulous, your fellow queens are sick with envy after just one look at you. Remember, it’s good to be sickening.
