It also does well carrying itself with minimal story: some humans dug too greedily and too deep, and they disturbed Iratus’ tomb, and now he’s going to kill everyone. It works really well, keeping the narrative always focused on the present of the game and where Iratus is going rather than trying to weave some kind of complex plot together.

I really enjoyed the music arrangements as well: the tracks never got old, no matter how many times I heard them, and the fact that you don’t hear the exact same track every single battle also really helps.

I also really enjoy the graphics, and the fact that every minion has alternate skins, many of which aren’t just sprite recolors but often have actual different costumes. The animations are simple but effective, all unique for each class and spell.

I’ve poured almost a hundred hours into it and I’m still happily putting more time into it, because it’s always such a unique and rewarding experience. I really can’t recommend it enough.

Search for Sustainable Packaging Solutions

For years now, we have been searching for a way to make our birdbath packaging more sustainable. Our starting idea is that the packaging should be able to be composted in the very gardens our birdbaths occupy. It doesn’t make sense to offer a product that beautifies one part of our landscape but sullies another with discarded packaging.

It turns out that this is an unexpectedly difficult challenge. The packaging industry has very limited options for offering accessible, flexible, compostable packaging that can adequately protect objects in transit. Innovative technologies do exist, but they generally serve specific uses such as food packaging. In this blog post we detail some of our own home-grown Research and Development, exploring how mycelial structures (mushroom roots) can be grown over recycled organic substrates. So far, we have discovered that mycelial structures are an amazing natural resource that will functionally satisfy our needs but, for various reasons, fail to meet the business case.

Currently, we use plastic pool noodles wrapped around the edges of our dishes. They work wonderfully in cushioning the birdbaths and protecting them from damage during shipping, but they go straight to landfill after one use. Pool noodles are made from a type of expanded polyethylene foam, which is not easily recycled and takes thousands of years to break down in the environment.

Our main difficulty has been finding a sustainable material that is robust enough to cushion the bird baths from damage without collapsing. Starch-based packing peanuts and paper-based materials just haven’t been strong enough to protect the edge of the birdbaths from their own weight when dropped on their edge.

Hannah, one of the Mallee Design team, is a mycophile: a person who loves fungi. Hannah suggested growing our own sustainable packaging using mushroom roots. Mushroom ‘roots’, scientifically called mycelium, can be grown on waste materials such as wood, straw, coffee grounds and husks to create compostable materials. The cell walls of mycelium are made out of chitin, the same fibrous substance that builds the exoskeletons of crustaceans such lobsters and crabs. This is what makes it a structural sound material that can have similar properties to plastics. Several companies have already been using the technology to make biodegradable packaging and leather-like textiles in America and Europe (eg. see Ecovative Design).

We began some small scale experiments to see if we could successfully grow the fungi ourselves. We chose a species called Ganoderma (a type of reishi mushroom used in traditional Chinese medicine) because it produces 3 types of mycelium. This makes it better able to hold a substrate together and in science jargon is called ‘trimitic’. Some of the mycelium is very thin and highly branched, some is thick and skeletal, and some is great at binding different parts of the mycelium together, making it very structurally robust overall. There are other timitic species available, such as Turkey Tails (Trametes versicolor), but we chose a Ganoderma because it is known to be used successfully in mushroom biotechnologies already.

Our first test used waste hardwood sawdust, from a local woodwork workshop, as the growing substrate. A second substrate we tested was sugarcane mulch, a less dense material that has the benefit of longer strands which, we thought, might help hold the finished product together. To each base substrate (sawdust/sugarcane) we added wheatbran, which acts as a high-protein, easily digestible supplement for the mycelium to use as food. Because sawdust and sugarcane is relatively nutrient poor and difficult for the mycelium to digest, adding wheatbran gives growth a head start. A third element we added was water, crucial for the metabolism of almost all life, including fungi!

After creating our supplemented substrate mix, our next step was to kill off any contaminants (such as bacteria or other fungi) already present in the substrate, which would interfere with the Ganoderma’s growth. We did this by placing the substrate in grow bags and heating them to temperatures above 100°C in a standard kitchen pressure cooker for several hours. Grow bags are made from industry standard polypropylene plastic, which can withstand the high temperatures of the pressure cooker, and which also have filter patches that prevent pathogens entering the bag once they’ve been taken out of the pressure cooker. The filter patches stop pathogens getting in, but still allow the exchange of gases such as oxygen and CO2, which are important for the mycelium’s growth.

Once the substrate had cooled we inoculated it by manually mixing grain spawn through the material with our sanitised, gloved hands. Grain spawn is sterilised grain coated in the spores of a mushroom species and we purchased ours from an Australian supplier. When the spores on the grain encounter an appropriate substate they start to grow into baby pieces of mycelium which look like fuzzy, white threads. These threads work their way through the substrate by digesting the sugars in the wood until they eventually colonise the material and prepare for fruiting (producing mushroom bodies).

Our mycelium formed a spongy white shell around the outside of our blocks. Once enough of a structure had formed, we removed the blocks from the grow bags and baked them in the oven until completely dried out. The oven drying process and heat desiccates the mycelium, basically killing it, and prevents it from fruiting (producing mushrooms). Drying it this way also makes sure the material is sterile and won’t carry spores or go mouldy when we use it as packaging.

The images below show our blocks grown on sawdust and sugarcane respectively.

The dried sawdust blocks were relatively heavy (~500g) with a smooth, leathery texture on the outer surface. They were denser than the pool noodles we’d been using but still had the bit of give needed to cushion the birdbaths and absorb shock. In the photo below you can see how the material still held its shape when squeezed. The sugarcane mulch blocks were lighter with a more crackly texture. They tended to break apart a little or collapse when firmly squeezed but maintained their overall shape on impact. Both substrates had the potential to work well as packaging replacement to the pool noodles.

What we produced was the beginnings of a viable packaging solution! A material that mimicked the characteristics of plastics that we wanted, but which would degrade easily in the environment and could be added to people’s home composts. We placed some of the finished material in our own composts and as a light mulch on pots plants. It was well on its way to breaking down within a couple of months

The business case

Once the physical properties of the finished material were deemed satisfactory, we then started planning a production schedule. This is where our research hit real problems. The effort, time and physical space required to manufacture these compostables for our small-scale enterprise is excessive.

Firstly, we’d need to figure out a way to make moulds in the shape of the packaging we wanted and/or invest in someone to make them for us. A run of enough packaging for 20 birdbaths would require 80 moulds. Creating the moulds is do-able but requires careful consideration and testing of the design and an initial start-up cost. We may also need to adapt the growing process to ensure the sterilised substrate can be transferred into the moulds with very low risk of contamination.

A second difficulty would be sourcing a reliable and local supplier of waste substrate appropriate for growing the mycelium. For those 80 moulds we would need approximately 40kg of sawdust or 16kg of sugarcane per run. Also do-able, but potentially time-consuming if it required picking up from the supplier.

Sterilising 16-40kg of substrate per run is one of the biggest challenges and extremely difficult without a commercial size autoclave. With our home pressure cooker we can only sterilise about 1.5kg of substrate at a time, every two hours. That would equal over 50 hours of sterilising per run using our current equipment, and isn’t at all feasible. Drying the mycelium blocks in the oven at the end of the growing process would also need to be scaled-up somehow.

Another big drawback is the time required to grow each packaging block. It takes one full month from the day sterilisation starts to oven-drying process at the end to get the finished packaging product. This time-lag means there needs to be a large amount buffer stock in storage to meet fluctuating demand for products throughout the year. The physical space required to hold 80 moulds for one month is approximately 1.8m3. The cost of a workshop rental for that space is***.

The final consideration is the labour and time investment required even if we streamlined the above processes at much as we possibly could. Even in this case we estimate that it would take one employee at least 16 hours or two days/week to make this happen for us. Overall, producing this packaging it is an entirely new business, waiting to happen, in its own right.

So, where to now? Now, we are collaborating with designers in Sydney to create a packaging material out of cardboard pulp – a material similar to that which is used in egg cartons. This cardboard packaging is recyclable and can be mass produced in China but is not without its own challenges. It has proven difficult to design a packaging piece sturdy enough to protect our birdbaths during travel but we are close to finalising the design now. Manufacturing in China has the downside of having to ship the packaging pieces to us (more use of fossil fuels) but it is the most viable and cost-effective solution we have found.

Below is a photo of all the packaging options we’ve tried so far, from pool noodles to mycelium blocks to cardboard moulds. None of them are perfect but we are doing our best to make our business as sustainable as we can.

Despite not choosing the mycelium blocks as our final packaging solution, we were inspired by the ability to create such a practical, organic material! One that also has the potential to be used aesthetically in other design projects. Our next endeavour is to try to create an outdoor chair made from mycelium using a similar method.

What is the project and what does it entail?

Samarkand International Airport is Uzbekistan’s second busiest airport. However, existing airport facilities – which were first built in 1967 – did not meet modern international standards and could not cater for anticipated, increased visitor levels.

The need for a modern, high-tech, international quality airport to act as a gateway to historic Samarkand was therefore urgent, and a material motivating factor.

Redevelopment of the Samarkand International Airport is now 80% complete and entails reconstruction of the international terminal, and construction of another terminal. The project also includes construction of 24 parking spaces to accommodate all types of aircraft, and a 700-space passenger car park.

When complete, the airport’s capacity will increase from 350 to 1,000 passengers per hour, increasing potential passenger traffic from 460,000 to 2 million per year, and increase scheduled flights from 40 to 120 per week into Uzbekistan.

When will the project be complete?

The project is anticipated to be completed in September 2021.

What is unique/interesting about Kiklop’s design and how has it impacted the construction phase?

The terminal has been designed to resemble an open book, referencing the New Guragan Astronomical Tables, a manuscript published by the famed astronomer Mirzo Ulugbek in 1444. When published, it was considered as one of the most important and cutting-edge documents on astronomy in the world containing the coordinates of 1,018 stars. Translated into Latin, this work was used in observatories throughout Europe.

To acknowledge this, the external roof of the terminal will display a sky map with some constellations recognizable from the air, especially when landing at night.

What have been the main issues/challenges that you have overcome during the project?

The main challenge during the project was that the majority of the work undertaken by Enter Engineering was carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Maintaining the safety and well-being of our employees and workers and preventing the spread of infection has been our primary concern.

We have implemented several effective measures to ensure all our employees are aware of the dangers of the virus and the necessary methods of self-protection and caring for others. This included the use of personal protective equipment, temperature measurement of employees, proper hygiene and disinfection measures, a quarantine system for monitoring suspected contaminated personnel and their attendance by qualified medical personnel.

Thankfully, we have managed to keep up with the overall work schedule.

When we asked for a new airport design concept, the excitement was there. It is not just a new airport, it is the airport of Samarkand, the Pearl of the East. Samarkand is the home of hugely important historic figures as well the elaborately built, skilfully ornate madrasas, shrines and mosques which represent the height of beauty and design of their time.

We harvested and synthesized the intellectual prosperity of the different cultures connected by the Silk Road without directly copying the strong historic elements. We felt a frequent use of iwans, qubbas, portals, arches, pillars on the new structures might make them seem ordinary. Instead, we have reinterpreted the traditional architectural elements in an intelligent way.

The primary goal of the airport is to be space for welcomes and farewells – a gateway to a city not only important to Uzbekistan, but also the Silk Road.

In the 21st century we believe it is time to say ‘new things’, so our design is bright, new, contemporary with elegant installations with limited ornamental patterns – a combination of traditional and modern textures. This all gives a positive impression to travellers as they arrive or leave from Samarkand.

We wanted to make the new airport a modern, practical amenity. It has an uncomplicated circulation – making life easy for passengers and airport management. It is not oversized and is rational in scale and use of resources.

What were your design principles?

We had four design principles:

Make It Simple

Make it Flexible

Make it Convenient, Comfortable, Attractive

Be Generous with Floor Area

Make It Simple

The best architecture around the world, both old and new, is based on simple concepts (from the pyramids in Egypt, the Pantheon in Rome and the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, to state-of-the-art airports in Hong Kong and Oslo). A simple Terminal is easier for passenger movements, more convenient for the users, and cheaper and more efficient to build and operate. In complex buildings, like airport terminals, it is a major challenge to achieve and maintain simplicity during the design, construction and operational phases.

Make it Flexible

An airport is subject to constant change. There is general requirement for expansion and reconfiguration in response to changing and often unforeseen demands. Design must be easy to change and expand the building, with minimal disruption to operations.

Make it Convenient, Comfortable, Attractive

The Terminal must have spacious rooms with high ceilings and a simple layout with wayfinding easy. There must be plenty of light, good views, in and out of the building. The facilities must be good with fine, well maintained materials and good details.

A wide range of nicely designed and well-stocked shops, cafes, restaurants and bars must be provided, together with attractive lounges and other services facilities. The processing of immigration, customs and security must be effective and courteous.

Be Generous with Floor Area

In Uzbekistan, construction costs are relatively reasonable. It is therefore advisable to be generous with floor area with a view to providing long-term future flexibility.

What was the inspiration for the design?

Among the many historic buildings of Samarkand, there is one building which remains timeless and, mostly, unique namely the famed Observatory of Mizra Ulughbeg. This was one of the grandest observatories in the Islamic world during its time and the largest in Central Asia. We believe it is a key part of our universal history and civilisation and as such should be celebrated once again. If there was going to be a reference to the history of Samarkand, it had to be linked to MirzaUlughbeg and his observatory which was truly ahead of its time.

In addition, the natural world in and around Samarkand, especially the çinar trees with the great significance of our common culture, was another source of inspiration. We believe the green landscape should start right by the airport and even penetrate into and between the buildings of the airport.

What makes the design innovative or unique?

From a bird’s eye view, the airport terminal building looks like an open book associated with the works of the famous statesman and scientist Mirzo Ulugbek, who made great efforts to develop science and art in Samarkand.

Of additional note, the simplicity of the design – despite being a complex project – a short passenger flow path and highly efficient baggage handling systems.

What has been your experience working in Uzbekistan and with Enter Engineering?

KIKLOP has 6 projects in Uzbekistan that are either complete or underway, including the Timurbek Military Campus, GEO University, Vostochny Airport ATC Tower and various other commercial developments.

Enter Engineering has been a great partner to work with on this high-profile project putting our design into practice in an efficiently and timely manner.

Are you working on any other international projects?

KIKLOP is an international practice with operations and offices spread across a number of different countries including Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Georgia, Iraq, Qatar, Bahrain, Albania and the UK.

Some of our ongoing projects where we are the lead designer include Nasiriyah Airport in Iraq, the Tbilisi Marriott Hotel in Georgia and London Park Modern, a housing development in the UK.

Over the years we have received a number of awards and recognition for our work including receiving ENR Merit Award for the Azerbaijan Ministry of Tax Tower and being recognised at the Berlin World Architecture Project for our work on Istanbul Grand Airport.

The game is mainly divided into three modules, such as territory construction (resource output required for casting equipment), equipment casting, and raid competition. How To Draft A Budget?

You cannot build a house without a blueprint.

You cannot engineer an invention without a schematic.

You cannot command an army without a strategy.

And you cannot create a film project without a budget.

I have been line producing and creating budget breakdowns for 15 years, and have broken down everything from small commercials to a multimillion dollar period piece about the Tulsa race massacre. A budget is a planning document with all the details of your production included. How many days, how many crew, how many cast, where will you shoot and what local taxes will you pay, etc.

A budget is also a moral document that determines what resources you'll use and the decisions you'll make along the way. Will you go the standard route of printing call sheets and scripts, or protect the environment by using a digital alternative? Will you pay your production assistants, or will you TRY and get away with unpaid film students? And if you do pay them, will you follow minimum wage laws, or risk the production with some $100 a day favored nation argument?

There are a lot of things to know, so let’s start from a high-level.

What does a budget look like?

The good people at Tongal have provided an example budget, which is available to all on Google Sheets.

A budget is broken down into sections. The sheet on top, is called the “Top Sheet” which provides totals for each department. Usually, each department is assigned a broad number (ex. Story is 1200, Director is 1500, Art Direction is 2200, etc.).

Generally, there are 4 key sections to the top-sheet:

Above the Line - This includes all expenses related to Actors, Writers, Director, and Producers. Depending on the size of your production, this could be anywhere from 10% to 50% of your overall budget.

Below the Line (Production) - This includes all expenses for physical production, including salaries, camera & light rentals, production design, set construction, make up, location fees, boom operator & sound mixer, transportation, and second unit. Basically anything involving on-set activities goes here.

Below the Line (Post-Production) - This includes all expenses for post-production, including salaries, edit equipment rentals & licenses, sound design, music (whether they are composers or licensed music packages), CGI & titles (which are separate departments), and final sound-mixing.

Total Other - Some studios and production companies prefer certain sections be broken out on the top sheet, such as taxes, fringes (union payments), buffer, completion bond, insurance, and “Miscellaneous”, but not all do. Each studio and production company has a preferred budget format, so always make sure to ask how they want their budget formatted before beginning.

Underneath the top sheet, there’s the Accounts. Each department’s expenses are broken down into accounts. So if the Art Direction Department is 2200, you would break that down as the Production Designer’s salary is 2201, the Art Director’s salary is 2202, Materials & Supplies are 2212, and Art Direction facilities and workshop would be 2299.

There’s actually a separate budget section for large productions called, “Chart of Accounts” which is literally just a list of all the departments and their account numbers.

Underneath the Accounts, there are the Details. Details are a granular breakdown of the Accounts. So, if the Production Designer’s salary is 2201, you would have a breakdown of, “Prep Local” for 2 weeks at X rate, “Shoot Local” for 4 weeks at Y rate, and “Wrap Local” for 1 week at X rate. I call out local, because if your crew member travels, then often there is a higher rate, and also additional costs, like per diem.

What should I budget for someone?

Let’s say you have a small production shooting in Los Angeles, and you want to spend as little money as possible. Assuming you’ve run out of friends that you can ask, “Hey, can you help me out for a day for free?” then you’re going to have to pay someone, and that involves minimum wage laws.

First, I want to address the most common tactic people take, which is to hire volunteers and film students to work for free. Lots of producers do this, even though it is NOT legal. According to the The Fair Labor Standards Act (the FLSA), you must pay a minimum wage, and factor in overtime. Some people will argue that Film and Farm Workers are exempt from minimum wage. This is wrong. I have read the FLSA, and film workers are not exempt.

Now, how do we calculate a day rate?

Well, let’s assume minimum wage is $10 per hour. The FLSA states that it’s regular payment for the first 8 hours, then 1.5 payment for 8 to 12 hours, and then double payment for everything after 12 hours. Since the industry standard for film shoots is 12 hour shooting days, we can simplify this by multiplying the hourly rate by 14 (8+(1.5*4)), so our film worker with an hourly minimum wage rate of $10, gets paid $140 for a 12 hour work day.

Most major cities are moving towards a $15/hour minimum wage, which means you should expect to pay a minimum of $15 x 14 = $210 per person, per day.

Second, I would like to address another common tactic of classifying all their workers as independent contractors. This classification status allows producers/employers to not pay taxes and fringes, that most other companies pay. This may seem like not a big deal, but what it winds up doing is pushing the burden of those taxes, and resources to the employees. This is unethical, but also, due to California passing the AB5 legislation, is now illegal. As pointed out by author Erin Pearson, it is important for business owners to know, the AB5 law gives the state Labor and Workforce Development Agency the power to fine companies $5,000 to $25,000 per violation for willfully misclassifying workers and allows the state Labor Commissioner to assess additional civil and liquidated damages. That means for each crew member you hire under the wrong classification they can fine you, on a set of even just 10 crew that is between $50,000-$250,000 fine. Other states will be passing similar legislation in the coming years.

So, if you are trying to obey the law (which I recommend you do), then that $210 per person, per day, rises approximately 24.88%, to $263 per person, per day. This can vary state by state, and if you have questions, reach out to your state government Taxes division, or just hire a certified public accountant to cut the checks.

What about Unions?

You may be saying, “I’m not going to pay that much, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) says I only have to pay actors $125 a day.” That is correct, but there are some strict caveats to SAG’s $125 a day payment.

First, that $125 is for an 8 hour work day, so when we apply the overtime calculations, that comes out to $218.75 per 12 hour day, PLUS the taxes and fringes, PLUS additional overtime if you go over 12 hours.

Second, your budget must be under $50,000 total, and I mean total for EVERYTHING, pre-production, fees, food, rental, and all of your post-production budget.

Third, there are geographical constraints. So, if you’re outside of Los Angeles or New York City, there may be some travel, per diem, and other fees.

Fourth, with any SAG production, you have to fill out a lot of paperwork, and trust me, you do not want to get audited by SAG; they will go through every piece of paperwork you submit.

Finally, there are final distribution restrictions on your piece, and that’s a whole other complicated ball of wax.

But actors aren’t the only ones with strict union guidelines. Let’s look at a Production Designer example.

If your Production Designer is working in California, and a member of the IATSE Local 800 Union (also known as the Art Directors Guild), in addition to the salary, you’ll pay FICA 1 (6.2%), FICA 2 (1.45 %), FUI (6%), Workers Comp Below the Line (4.33%), and CA SUI (6.2%), and a CA local union dues fringe of 17%.

Also, the union Production Designer has a 5 day/60 hour week minimum guarantee, that’s around $3,800 per week, depending on various factors like the scope of their responsibilities.

So, if you want to employ a union production designer in California for your production of 5 days, the costs will break down as such:

Your Departments

I tell my clients all the time, every production is different, and thus has different needs.

You could do a one-day “talking heads” interview shoot where you need 1 camera person, 1 sound person, and a producer, but all your money goes into post and editing.

You could do a 10 shooting day microbudget feature, and spend every amount of your small budget on production design and crew, but then have no money left over for post-production, and your film takes 2-5 years to finish because you’re begging, borrowing, and stealing.

Or you could be doing an animation or video game project where you hire a few voice actors for $125 each for an 8 hour day, but then you spend $100,000 on your post-production pipeline over two years, and you get as much value as possible by outsourcing to places with cheap labor like Brazil, China, and Eastern Europe while utilizing resources like Blender and Fiverr.

Believe it or not, the more money you spend, the higher quality you will get. This is because people who know their job, know what they are worth on the open market, and will work on projects that pay them what they feel is a worthwhile rate. In addition, more money means more time, and more time means more shots, more coverage, more options, more props, more costumes, more editing time, more special effects render and processing time, etc.

I won’t call out every department, but here are some keys.

Writers, Directors, And Producers

Often on smaller projects, the writer, director, and producer are all the same person. So the first question the heads of the production will ask is are they going to pay themselves. One way or another, this will set the tone for the entire production.

Acting Talent

The number one thing that will impact your budget is acting/on-screen talent. If an actor has a conflict, and can’t work on Thursday because they’re working on another Tongal project, you have to move around schedule and locations, and that could mean a massive hit to the project.

The first thing I will do to trim down the budget of a project, is cut or combine characters. If the script calls for a group of 40 extras, cut that down to 7. If the script calls for a hospital to have both a Nurse and a Receptionist, combine those into 1 part. Odds are if your characters don’t even have a first name, they’re not adding value to the production or the story.

If a script has 16 speaking roles, that’s way too many characters, and you need to start combining or cutting. Not only from a budget perspective, but if you have that many speaking characters, you wind up detracting attention from your main characters and story.

The truth is, it’s not hard to get a group of actors who will work for free or on deferred pay, even a group of actors willing to work 2 or 3 weeks for free. However, high-quality and talented actors come at a cost, and you should be prepared to pay that cost.

Locations

The number two thing that will impact your budget is locations. Or, rather, I should say, location.

The truth is, most independent films, have most of their shooting done at 1 location. Let’s take for example Quentin Tarantino’s award winning Directorial debut, RESERVOIR DOGS. That entire movie is shot at 6 locations, 2 of which are pick up shots. The overwhelming majority of that movie is shot in the warehouse, in the apartment above that warehouse, in the bathroom of that warehouse, on the roof of that warehouse, and in the alleys around that warehouse.

Why is this?

Because your locations determine everything else around your budget.

How much travel time do you have?

How many location fees are you paying?

How many locations do you need to set up and break down with art and set dressing?

How will you pay for parking?

Are people close enough to work on setting up the next scene while filming the current one?

Can you save leftover food in a refrigerator near set? Or do you need to throw out everything you can’t transport?

Can you set up your equipment once, and do a walkaway at the end of every night (where you just leave everything and lockup)? Or do you have to waste time breaking down equipment, art, and materials, pack up the truck, and then unpack everything at a new location the next day?

Trust me, I’ve produced projects with 1 location, and projects with 12 locations, and I would choose the 1 location method any day.

Where else to save money?

A lot of producers will try to get discounted or free resources by saying their project will be great publicity and look good on a resume. However, nobody ever paid for rent or food with something that looked good on their resume.

Now there are good ways to get discounts. They include:

Scheduling your project at times of the year that productions don’t normally shoot, such as after most TV shows have wrapped (in May for Los Angeles, or January in most other cities), or during the holiday hiatus (in late November through December). This allows you to get experienced labor at competitive rates, as well as production equipment rentals.

You can also benefit from thrifty shopping. Not every piece of film equipment needs to be rented/purchased from a name-brand supplier like Birns & Sawyer. You can buy lights and cheap equipment from Lowes, Amazon, and buy second-hand via ebay, Craigslist, and sites like Sharegrid.

Another great option for post-production is agreeing to not push a rigid timeline for completing deliverables. This is usually the best option if you don’t have a release date, or a bond company breathing down your neck.

Another great option is, if you have a track record with your employees or vendors, and you have a confirmed project coming down the pipeline, you can bundle the costs for both projects, “If you do Project A for X price, I’ll give you Project B for Y price.”

And of course, music can always be an issue, especially sync rights. However, on a low budget, it’s best to get music you love for a low price up front, and then use it as your “temp” track through the editing process. Starship Tank Fabricator/Welder (TIG/6G) - Temporary (Day Shift)

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

TANK FABRICATOR/WELDER (TIG/6G) – TEMPORARY POSITION (DAY SHIFT)

Tank fabricators will work to build the primary airframe of the Starship and Super Heavy vehicles at the SpaceX South Texas build site. The tank fabricator will work with an elite team of other fabricators and technicians to rapidly build the tank (cylindrical structure), tank bulkheads, and other large associated structures for the flight article design of both vehicles.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

GTAW Class A welds; cut, trim, fit and fabricate metal components to dimensions for building and assembling

Collaborate with lead welder to ensure that the proper weld procedure, type of material and rod size are accurately assessed for each welding project

Analyze engineering drawings and specifications to plan welding operations where procedural information is unavailable

Make a continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly

Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment

Weld assembly and fabrication of various small to large scale structures and assemblies

Effectively communicate with management/supervisors, engineering staff and planners to achieve build efficiency

Modify repair, assemble, and install launch vehicles

Check work after completion of each operation in job and/or completed job to ensure it is complete per drawing

Handle and dispose of hazardous materials in approved manner

Install and assemble custom and off-the-shelf tooling and machinery for building primary tank structure

Setup of safety equipment and work platforms at elevation

Operate general shop equipment and vehicles (forklifts, boom lifts, scissor lifts, etc.)

POSITION DETAILS:

This is a temporary position with SpaceX, for the length of time as stated, and is subject to change with minimal notice as business needs dictate.

LENGTH OF POSITION: 6 months

LOCATION: Brownsville, TX

SHIFT: Day shift (6 AM – 6 PM); Alternative Work Schedule: 3 days on, 4 days off then 4 days on, 3 days off

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalency certificate

2+ years of experience with TIG welding in a manufacturing environment

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

10+ years of experience in GTAW welding with one or more of the following materials: stainless steel, carbon steel, Inconel, aluminum and titanium

Highly proficient in tube cutting, grinding and fabrication

Highly experience in Class A welds

Certifications with AWS D17.1 and D1.2

Knowledge in DC welding techniques, and engineering requirements

Knowledge in standard tools, materials, motions, and practices of the welding trade

Knowledge in occupational hazards and effective safety precautions of the trade

Knowledge in arc air procedures and equipment

Experience in overhead cranes and forklifts

Use of precision measuring instruments

Ability to rapidly change roles/responsibilities while working in a high-paced, challenging work environment

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Role requires passing a weld test per AWS D17.1

This role requires working from 6 AM – 6 PM; 3 days on, 4 days off, then 4 days on, 3 days off

Ability to work multiple shifts and change shifts with minimal notice

Ability to travel to different sites, as needed

Ability to stand for extended periods – 8 hours minimum

Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 25 lbs.) unassisted

Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting upper body, working in cramped positions in small openings and climbing hand over hand

Ability to work at elevated heights (up to 100 feet)

Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments – heat, cold, rain

Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
