Wonder Woman 1984 review

Long, rambly, and spoilery. You’ve been warned.

I saw WW84. I had thoughts. Let's talk about it.

I want to preface with the fact that it's amazing that we have another female-led superhero film! I loved Patti Jenkins' work with the first Wonder Woman (and this one too) and I'm so glad she's back for this one. There's obviously a lot to pick through, but first, a couple reminders.

No film will ever be "perfect."

Not every film is made specifically for you.

It is okay to vibe or disvibe with something. But that does not make it trash.

Also, please, keep in mind, what I'm expressing are my opinions. I'm entitled to mine as you are entitled to yours. I hope you have a lovely time on the internet, and I hope you wish the same for everyone you interact with.

Oh, and spoilers obviously.

Okay, with all that out of the way, let's dig in.

My overall experience with the film is positive! I had a great time watching it, it got me emotional, and I definitely want to watch it again. That said, I don't think it's better than the first one (although that would have been quite a feat), and that's ok. It's a continuation of a story we've already started, and it doesn't need to outshine the first.

Okay, after all the hyping up and disclaiming I've done, let's dig into what I didn't like about the film.

Number one is pacing. The storyline felt very erratic to me? Part of that, I feel, is because we have three (four?) main characters, and we jump between them pretty abruptly.

Number two is the themes. Now I do like the themes of WW84 (truth and sacrifice), I just don't think they were worked into the film as cohesively as I would have liked?

Number three is perceived character changes to Diana. And really, some of this is kinda circumstantial, I just thought it deserved its own bullet point. You'll see what I mean.

So, on Pacing.

We jump between Diana (and Steve), Barbara, and Maxwell pretty frequently. And before I talk about that, I have to talk about my view on the characters.

a. Now, I love the Mandalorian, but I was not personally invested in Maxwell's arc at all. Again, this is my take, and I know people disagree. Many people feel like Pedro Pascal carried the film on his shoulders. That's cool. He's a great actor. I'm glad he was in it. I just kinda checked out of every scene he was in (when he wasn't with his kid) because I wasn't invested in him. He played a sleazeball on purpose, and it worked. I was sleazed. So the movie kinda dragged for me whenever the camera panned to him.

b. I loved the focus on Barbara. I don't know Cheetah from the comics, so this is from a movie-only perspective. But I know one of the criticisms of the first film was that Diana didn't really talk to women after she left Themyscira (even though there was a perfectly good villainess sitting right there for her to converse with and have morality debates/fights with! Even Steve Trevor got to talk to Dr Poison!), so I thought it was great that 1) they set up a villainess for her to fight and 2) it was a villainess that she knew, she had talked to, she had formed a relationship with. It honestly surprised me that Barbara was helpful for so long (bc I had seen the trailer and got spoiled that she would become a villain), but I love that she genuinely did want to help Diana, up until she hit her hard limit (giving up her powers). Now, that being said, the Nerd Girl Makeover has been done a thousand times. I knew what her vague trajectory would be from the second she appeared on screen with frizzy hair. I did like that her motivation was not solely "pretty people are mean to me, and I want revenge and/or for this hot guy to like me," but specifically, "I want to be like this really cool girl" and then "I don’t want to be like anyone else; I want to be the best/number one" for myself." But I felt like the absolute inattention that she was shown at the beginning and the absolute worship Diana and later Barbara would get was ... highly exaggerated? And I know this was another criticism of the first film, that yeah "Diana did so well in the real world because SHE'S HOT and that's actually not empowering to women" or something. But like. Watching that part made me uncomfortable instead of seen. Pandered to, instead of impacted. Showing how looks change how society treats you is important, but not to this caricaturized degree.

c. (and d?) And lastly, Diana and Steve. Or more accurately, Diana and Steve's soul or memories or ??? that has been transplanted into some random man's body with absolutely no one's consent (I don't believe that Diana "consented" when making the wish, because she didn't know 1. That it would even work or 2. HOW it would work.). So ... Yeah. The first problem with this (chronologically, not by importance) is that it's really unclear what's going on? Some rando is reciting Steve's lines from the first film, then all of a sudden he turns into Chris Pine? (Fun fact: my aunt actually recognized the actor from Hallmark 😂 Could you imagine being the guy who gets replaced by Chris Pine for half the movie? Like "yeah, I played Steve Trevor, but they had Chris Pine do all the important parts" 😂😂😂). So, Diana and Steve finally figure out that he's inhabiting some engineer's body because of the wish she made. And then they bang. Or do they bang before they figure it out? Either way, yikes 😬. Not a good look.

To be clear, the yikes part is that Steve is inhabiting Engineer Dude's body without their consent (without his own either tho so that part's not really his fault), but then he chooses to do things sexually with that body that Engineer Dude didn't consent to (because he's like, literally not home. Whether he's been subsumed into Chris Pine or taken out or dormant or whatever). Oh, and then like, probably doing death-defying stunts with his body is also yikes. I'm not really sure what the rules around body possession are. Cuz you know.

Anyway, that is a huge issue that is literally not addressed. At all.

Again, I think they may have been trying to address some criticisms from the first film about Diana "getting rid of the dreaded V-card so quickly in Wonder Woman and then pining after Chris Pine (lol) for the rest of her long life" and how that sets back female sexuality and stuff. Which I get. They actually lampshaded it in WW84, how Chris Pine wants her to move on because "the world deserves her." Which I know what they were going for in the scene, but I feel like they didn't flesh out the journey from Hippolyta's "the world doesn't deserve you Diana" to Steve's "the world deserves you (to date them)" enough. But I digress.

I'm gonna talk a little bit more about the possession and that "the world deserves/doesn't deserve you" line in my Themes section, but honestly? From the previews, I assumed that Chris Pine was revived from the dead via time travel or something. Body possession was NOT in the the trailers. I think the Dreamstone could have created a body for him out of nothing. Or like "time-traveled" him into the future. So like. Why didn't they? Why introduce body possession at all? So they could make fun of the dude's clothes?

Okay, back to the pacing part of the pacing section. These three (four?) characters have completely different things going on in their lives (I actually forgot to talk about Maxwell, but he wants to "be the best," and he's gonna do it by giving people what they think they want (maybe) and then taking from them whatever he wants. Yeah idk). And all three do interact at the beginning (brownie points) even if the attempted seduction of Barbara by Maxwell makes me want to throw up. But the themes aren't worked in as cohesively as I would have liked, and the tone changes were jarring, as the film switched between them all.

Another facet of the movie is that the Dreamstone is kind of a mystery. And that was a deliberate Choice™, not a mistake. We're guessing at what the rock is doing and how and why and by who and all that stuff, and that's on purpose, but that makes for a confusing experience. Their approach is to throw something confusing at you and then explain it later. Which is great for worldbuilding. But not always for the Movie-Watching Experience™. So to recap, we're switching tracks and characters with their own separate stories while also setting up several confusing plot points that take a while to unravel. This all contributes to the Experience™, good or bad.

Honestly, I wonder how much Covid affected this movie? My dad felt like a lot of scenes probably got cut for various reasons, and it probably affected the flow of the movie. If so, it could have affected thematic coherence, too. Speaking of...

So, Themes.

The themes that I got out of this film were Truth and Sacrifice. Maybe I missed some; I'm not an experienced Media Critic™. But these are the ones I noticed.

And actually, these themes are really strong. Universally applicable, and used in all three character arcs. It's just tied in a bit ... erratically?

So working backward, knowing that the Dreamstone is giving you a lie, you need to renounce your wish and accept the Truth™. This is echoed in Diana's flashback, where she needed to accept that she didn't win.

Working backward again, Sacrifice was a big part of the story for all three characters because Diana was willing to sacrifice her power to keep Steve, but he wanted her to sacrifice him so she could save the world. Barbara was willing to sacrifice her "humanity" or "empathy" or whatever she lost for the power and influence she got by emulating Diana, and she was unwilling to sacrifice that to save the world. Maxwell was willing to sacrifice time with his son to "become the best," but he did sacrifice that to save his son's life.

And then, full circle, he confessed to his son that he wasn't the best, he's actually a filthy liar. Which, yes, kudos for the themes, be honest with your children, but you can still sanitize it a bit. That speech alone would have traumatized the kid.

Speaking of speeches, Antiope's speech confused me in a similar way? Like, she stops Diana from "winning" the tournament after cheating, and goes on this weird rambly rant which goes from "accept that you're not a winner" to "cheating is bad and so is lying." Which yes, cheating is bad, but it's weird that she wouldn't have been disqualified at this point for not shooting that last target? Like, did she need to be tackled? Idk, I felt like they came up with the line they wanted Antiope to say first, and then just made her say it. (And also, in other stories, Diana would have been praised for being "clever" and "never giving up without a fight." So like, I needed a bit more preparation for which take they were going for, because the anti-cheating spiel felt jarring to me.)

And again, I wonder if this is a response to a criticism of this first film. (Warning: WW17 rant gearing up)

When Diana has her big motivational flashback during her fight with Ares, she thinks about Steve, this dude she just met a week ago, saying he loved her. When she could have been thinking about literally any of the women who had raised her. I personally think it would have been cool to hear some of Antiope's words at that point. Since they set up Hippolyta and Antiope to have conflicting ideas over whether Diana should fulfill her humanity-saving destiny, it might have been cool to see her saying something about humans and how they need her or how she should help them or something. They could even have done the whole thing with not being able to hear Steve's last words, but with Antiope since she dies earlier in the film and doesn't finish speaking. I also think it would have been cool for them to expand Hippolyta's earlier line about "They don't deserve you, Diana," here to like "They need you, Diana," or something. And then Steve's line in WW84 could have been something like "They're with you, Diana," or "They could get to know you, Diana," and her character arc could have been about actually living among society and maybe getting to know these humans that she's saved so many times (which they kind of alluded to when she and Barbara had their little date at the beginning of the film). But I digress.

So, yeah, I found both of these speeches to be ... Not great? Like I can tell what they're going for and how they tie into the themes, but they're so heavy-handed and they don't actually fit in too well to the moment they happen in. Like as soon as the speech starts, you realize that they started going meta on you. The character isn't really speaking to the other character, they're speaking to us, and they're telling us how this scene ties into the greater themes of the film.

Oh and they have this great quote from Antiope "greatness is not what you think" and then Maxwell's son wishes for him to be "great." And they do nothing with it :(

As promised, I want to talk about the body possession a little bit more. So again, one of the recurring themes is Truth™. Which is a great choice for Wonder Woman, what with her Lasso of Truth.

But it's tied in a bit haphazardly. They force it into a conversation about cheating in a flashback at the beginning of the film. And then they talk about how you need to accept the Truth™ in order to defeat the Dreamstone. I already talked about the cheating, and how the "accept that you're not a winner" was kind of a weird path to take to get your point across to a ten year old girl.

But the Dreamstone. Oh, the Dreamstone. I said before that the movie is a mystery. It shows you things but doesn't explain them. Well, this is a bit of a problem. Because they never actually explain that the Dreamstone is giving you lies. To my eyes, the Dreamstone is changing reality. Steve is back, Barbara is powerful, and Maxwell is doing whatever he wants with the powers of the Dreamstone. THIS DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A LIE TO ME. THERE IS NO "TRUTH" TO ACCEPT, JUST YOUR NEW REALITY. And that made the film less thematically strong (to my eyes, anyway. Other people probably picked up on stuff I didn't). But I feel like this might have been an easy fix? Like you already have Chris Pine in someone else's body (oh! So that's why they chose body possession! Because he's a Lie™! ... Still don't like it) I still think he should have manifested his own body or something but whatever. Barbara's appearance hardly changed at first. If they had people reacting to her as if she was hot when she really looked the same as she always does, then I would have bought your "but the Dreamstone only gives you lies." Instead, Barbara gained the power to walk in heels and then hotness and then the literal power of a God™ (a la Diana) which makes me think the Dreamstone is changing reality. Not bringing lies.

Oh, also, they could have had Diana's Lasso of Truth stop working for her. I thought that's what they were going for at first, but it turns out that Diana is just losing her powers. They also started with "the Dreamstone will give you what you want most," but then Maxwell started using it to clear traffic? Which by the way, is NOT an illusion. That is reality-bending.

There were just so many ways to make it obvious that "the Dreamstone is giving you lies," but they didn't use them. Or at the very least, they didn't commit. I felt like they used a little bit of "be careful what you wish for" (mostly on randos that Maxwell is duping), a little bit of "what are you willing to sacrifice," and a little of "you can have what you want, but it won't be real." All of which are valid ways to take a Dreamstone kind of story, but if they wanted to rely so heavily on Truth™ as the main theme, then I feel like more of the wishes should have been showcasing that. Instead, it felt like a jumble of all the kinds of messages we're used to seeing with Wish-Granting Objects, with no emphasis on specifically the "it's all a lie" part.

Ugh, I'm actually mad now, because I'm trying to think of a story I've heard where this magical thing is granting wishes but they're Explicitly Not Real. Like all the money gets turned back to leaves or whatever (kinda like Cinderella's pumpkin lol). Oh, Aladdin does this, too, because yeah Genie is granting wishes and changing reality, but not permanently? Like, almost all of the stuff he uses magic to do dissolves as soon as we're looking away from it or gets fixed by the end of the movie? And the film is very very clear on the fact that Aladdin is not factually a Prince.

But this film doesn't do that. They make it seem like the Dreamstone can change reality, then berate the characters for not Accepting the Truth™ about themselves. Maybe if they had made a bigger deal out of Steve coming back in someone else's body, it would have been 1) less confusing, 2) less icky (provided they don't do the sex in Engineer Dude's body), and 3) more thematically coherent.

Lastly, Diana's perceived character changes.

This one is probably the most subjective. Diana, as a character, in the first film was very morally grounded and motivated. The Diana in this film felt ... different. Again. Subjective. And also circumstantial.

Diana is still morally grounded in this film. But she's also willing to sacrifice the world to keep Steve Trevor around. Which feels like a jarring change from her characterization in the first film. She was so idealistic and optimistic in that first film, I couldn't imagine her making that choice. It just felt like such a tone change for her character. How did we go from "Who will I be if I stay?" to "Why, for once, can't I just have this one thing, Steve? ... I can't give you up. I can't. So I won't."

Also, her motivation in this film seemed to center around her loss of Steve Trevor and wanting him, and less around "save the world." Which, to be fair, I'm all for women being selfish in film. Give me women of all motivations and desires. I don't want Diana to be Perfect™. I just want her to be consistent. And I didn't think this characterization was as consistent as I expected. Was her life so terrible without Steve (even though they only knew each other for a short time)? Not to say this couldn't be a valid take on Diana (reminder: I haven't read any comics, so maybe it's not in character at all 🤷‍♀️), but if that's what they were going for, they should have developed the journey from naive idealist to jaded romantic more in order to justify this character change.

Also, the body possession thing. She's really okay with her boyfriend possessing somebody else's body. I did like the "All I See Is You" line, since it's romantic, but up until that point, we as viewers aren't really sure why Chris Pine and Hallmark Dude are both playing this guy. Then we find out in a romantic line that Chris Pine is just Wonder Woman's view of him. He still looks like Engineer Dude because he is Engineer Dude. At first, I thought that they used a different guy for the first meeting because Diana didn't recognize him. That this was her perception of him until she realized who it was. (I thought this was supported by Chris Pine's more rugged look in this film. But actually they were probably matching him to the body he was inhabiting, since the character really didn't look like himself). Leverage does a similar thing in the Rashomon Job. All the characters saw each other at the same event, but they didn't know each other back then, so they had different actors play their parts until it's slowly revealed that actually the random people at the event were the characters we know and love. It's great. Anyway, that's not what they're going for here, and the ambiguous framing along with Diana and Steve's chemistry is supposed to make you forget that he is possessing someone else’s body! Against their will! (Again, Steve and Diana didn't consent to the initial possession either, but they absolutely consented to what they did together. Engineer Dude did not.)

Yikes 😬

I will say, she didn't kill innocents this time. One of my critiques of the first movie was that she was so willing to kill Germans. And I get it, Nazis are usually an "acceptable" target in American media. But as a character, she believed that they were innocents who had been manipulated by Ares. And yet, she was slaughtering them en masse. But, in this movie, they're really careful to make sure that she's nonlethal.

And yeah, that's it.

Asteria was of course awesome. That bonus credit scene was 👌

I'm glad they got Linda Hemming back for costuming after the disaster of Justice League. Unfortunately, being set in the 80's, the outfits are not quite so modest as the first movie. But the important thing was the lack of male gaze in those shots.

The movie definitely hit me in my emotions. I cried three times: first during the tournament, watching the Amazon's being awesome. Then during Diana and Steve's fight, and when Steve convinced Diana to let him go. 😭

As I said, I definitely plan on rewatching. It makes me sad to see how much negative press that the movie is getting when it's one of so few female-led blockbusters. A lot of people are comparing it to the original or to the comics or TV show, when those are just not valuable comparisons. Comic books and TV shows are completely different mediums. And a successful sequel CONTINUES a story, instead of rehashing it. And also, not all films are created specifically for YOU. A lot of the 80's references went over my head, but that's ok. They weren't for me. I don't begrudge their existence just because I don't vibe with them.

Again, no film is perfect! I think I talked through a lot of its weaknesses pretty thoroughly, but I still think it's a strong film, and I want it to succeed.

Anyhoo, I hope you had fun watching the movie (even though it's not perfect) and I hope you had fun reading my commentary.

Some rimmer headcanons under the cut Bc I was thinking about writing a fic but have commitment issues when it comes to actually writing

1. Rimmer is autistic and you can pry this out of my cold dead hands. Main ways he stims are his salutes and biting his knuckles. Huge parts of why he was bullied and treated poorly by his family come from the fact that he always has had issues sociallizing in the “”””normal”””” way and has related learning issues. Very obsessed with being punctual and following social rules that he doesn’t quite understand, a lot of his self esteem issues come from the fact that he knows he’s doing the right thing per social conventions but he’s doing it wrong?? Why is it wrong when he does his version of it, he’s trying his best?? Projecting onto a fictional character time: is very much the way he is in the show because he was able to repress a lot of the things that made him ‘obvious’ and now just appears to be an incredibly socially awkward/weird person as opposed to someone who just communicates differently. Likes repetitive, involved, logic and planning related type things (war strategy, board games, schedule and list making, engineering related stuff). Zero actual interest in Astronav type stuff but feels obligated to be good at it and has it drilled into his brain that it was the only way he was going to amount to something so he forces himself to try to be good at it, but that’s part of the reason he’s so crap at it. So used to being bullied that he feels like he needs to be above other people to protect himself because he’s so used to abuse of power being pointed at him.

2. Gay. that’s it, just gay. He knows it, he doesn’t deny internally as much as he did as a child. He’s absolutely absorbed so much homophobia from his family that he goes to great lengths to cover it up, but he isn’t unaware of it or so repressed that he’s convinced himself he’s not. All of the talk about women and porn and all that shit is a very elaborate and paranoid cover. He literally owns straight porn so when lister digs through his shit he thinks he’s found rimmers real porn and stops looking. Keeps gay porn stashed in some ridiculous hiding spot. Tells himself he’s verse but he’s really just a kind of dominant/pushy bottom. Did actually have sex with Yvonne because that was a gross and dodgy situation (on both ends but falls on rimmer because he was in control of his faculties) she was not fully aware of the situation but he was not the one who initiated it and essentially went along with it out of a lack of self respect and awareness for what was going to come of it (which makes him shitty because rimmer is still a scummy, miserable person). In his teen years and early twenties he thought maybe he could really ‘cure’ himself of it some way but everything he tried wasn’t worth it in the end and he just decided to never speak of it.

3: what made Ace different. Repeating a grade comes off like a joke when it’s explained that is why Ace is who he is. Really when he repeated that grade he was put into a remedial type class that tended to gather the kids with learning disabilities, bad home lives, trauma, etc (all the things that tend to make it harder for a child to suceed) and he was given new tools that boosted his confidence in being able to learn and socialize, maybe never got a proper diagnoses but just the proof that he could learn and do well if he approaches things in a different way was a huge game changer. Still had a lot of deep seated homophobia from his family and trauma from being treated differently from his brothers but it was easier to cope. Ace is still gay and the whole saving the damsel in distress and riding off into the sunset shit comes from following socializing as set rules instead of something involving nuance, follows the trope of a hero because if he’s going to go around saving worlds he’s going to do it the ‘right’ way, which is part why he has such an over the top ‘action hero’ stereotype vibe. Ace wishes that more of the rimmers he met were willing to listen to him because he just wants to drop a truth bomb and open of their potential. Ace still has a lot of unsorted issues, they just tend to be more internal than immediately obvious.

4: Relationship with Lister: incredibly, ridiculously angry and embarrassed when he realizes lister is attractive. Will never admit it but when Lister is first teaching Kryten how to break his programming he’s sad that no one ever taught him how to break out of his ‘programming’. His want to be friends with Lister is something he struggles with (early seasons especially) because he craves Listers respect but the only way Rimmer knows how to get respect is by outranking someone. Comes out to lister when he’s drunk. Lister has casually mentioned men in ways that he mentions women (but never directly says he’s attracted to men, so it just becomes a paranoid obsession in Rimmers mind, is he into guys or is rimmer just reading into it to much?) and brings up a story that is blatantly about a guy he’s dated (but rimmer still isn’t quite sure because it’s not a 100% straight forward statement) and Rimmer comments on his jealousy of lister being so open minded and nonchalant about men. Lister puts the pieces together from there and makes a point to try to make the environment of the ship more welcoming, still takes rimmer ages to fully come out. (Lister is the biggest bi on the ship and isn’t fully in the closet, he just doesn’t talk about it explicitly, people who know how lister communicates pick up on it, but most people just think he’s a friendly guy)

5. Clothes and presentation. This ones more for fun because I would love to see how rimmer would dress himself if he could get past more of his trauma. Shorts and cropped pants and tailored pants are a big one. If there wasn’t such a stigma on how gay men dress and style themselves he would be less afraid to wear something a little less baggy. Actually loves color (the uniform change from the khakis to the red, blues, and greens he wears later in the show is just absolutely fantastic. Not an accessory person, would rather just have a smooth, sleek look with well fit clothes and a pop of colors on neutrals. I think the cross dressing in the show doesn’t necessarily/purposefully come from a malicious place but is definitely a sign of the times, outdated ideas of humor and a lack of understanding of gender non conforming. Rimmer wouldn’t be opposed (well if he could get past his trauma (which is why we only see this trait in low rimmer or when he has the holo virus)) to dressing up in “””female”””” clothes, especially not the odd accessory or sexy outfit if it were a kink thing but has an overall more masculine sense of style. In a perfect reality where he was nurtured and encouraged I feel like he would identify and present in a more fluid way, but the cannon rimmer isn’t really capable of recognizing and expressing himself like that.

6: Sexual/romantic History. Oh boy. rimmer has been on dates with women, mainly to keep up apperences and make it look like he’s trying to be successful with women. Has no idea what good flirting sounds like because all the times someone has genuinely flirted with him he’s explained it away be convincing himself they’re just overly friendly or are trying to make fun of him (or he just doesn’t pick up on it). When he flirts it’s either completely over the top obvious garbage because he’s trying to get his point across or it’s vague small comments that really aren’t flirting because he’s attempting nuance or feels like he’s being to out in the open. Has had maybe one or two sexual encounters with men, always on shore leave as far from where the ship has docked as possible and always working to cover his tracks the entire time. By the time the stasis leak happens his sexual encounters with men had never reached penatration and really just amounted to some head and fooling around that he felt conflicted (but happy) about afterwards.

I probably have more floating around in my brain but I’ve really only just hit season three of my rewatch so this is all based on early seasons, some fanfic I binged, projection, and what I remember from the other couple of times I’ve watched the series.

hey, guys! i’m sora and honestly, i just binge watched stranger things s2 + s3 just recently (also rewatched s1 tbh), but i might rewatch s3 bc..... i just really like it. anyway!! i’ve decided to bring over suzie because i thought she was so cute and adorable, but wanted to mix in my own ideas for her growing up. so i want to mention in advance that i did have her personality/interests from the show, but changed her development. also, i’m kinda lazy to type up my usual routine of intros, so this is just going to be a bit of a mess and 100% just bullet points tbh. oh, and if anyone wants to plot, please hmu!

she was born on october 9, 1971.

her parents love her dearly and she’d do anything for them. the main topic they don’t see eye to eye, however, is the beliefs of mormonism. while her parents are mormon, which suzie respects, the girl gradually separated from it. nonetheless, she’s currently thinking of what she does believe in. aside from science.

speaking of science, suzie still loves anything scientific. specifically, she’s into plants, galaxies, and anything else involving space.

her dream job is to be an astronaut, while her second dream job is to be an aerospace engineer.

one of her role models is sally ride.

when she was young, she started off as what you’d see from suzie in the show. proud of her brain, walls covered of planets and musical posters, and books she actually read. which is the same to how she is now, but hides it for the most part. she only tends to be “nerdy” around those she’s been friends with since she was a kid, who she met at camp, and dustin.

growing up, around middle school to high school years, she was teased and made fun of for being smart. at first, it was jokes being thrown at her, but the kids became harsher and would at times write mean letters, trip her, play catch with her notebook, etc. she eventually grew tired of it around her sophomore/junior year and worked on learning how to style her hair, wear make-up, and wear the latest fashion trends.

when it comes to camp know where, it’s pretty much a second home to her. ever since she was allowed to attend, she went every year, until she reached 11th grade and chose to take a counselor in-training program. finally, when she turned 18, she was looking forward to being a counselor this summer. until her and her parents moved to hawkins around the end of december.

suzie was quite sad to be leaving her friends and the town, especially since she had childhood friends there, a group of friends she became close to in high school, and just people she’s known for years around salt lake.

she did consider being a counselor for camp know where for this summer, but decided against it to try and save money for future spending when she goes to college. and didn’t want her parents to spend traveling money just to take her since she figured that could go into the money when she’s in college too.

suzie doesn’t drive. she prefers biking because it saves money and it’s better for the environment.

the reason why she likes the hawk cinema is because she’s a fan of movies. her preference is musicals, but she’s also down to watch comedies, family-friendly, romance, horror, and any other genre. two of her favorite movies are wizard of oz (1939) and grease (1978).

not only that, but she’s a fan of plays too. during high school, she’s attended every play that was shown at school. she thought about auditioning, but has stage fright and rejected the idea.

i feel like i had more headcanons in mind, but forgot them, so i’m stopping here!

VLD Season 7 Reactions: Part 2

The EPs lack the ability to bring a resolution or closure. We never find out Haggar’s motivation or reasoning about Operation Kuron. We never find out who the “other one” was in the pilot. We never find out Shiro’s bayard form. Lance’s insecurities are never resolved. We never find out the limitations of Allura’s powers - she can transfer souls but can’t find the Black Lion galaxies away? There’s just so much left out of the story.

The EPs failed a long time ago, if that’s the case. When they decided to kill off one of the main characters without allowing the team to grieve, forced the most popular paladin off the team, demoted the leader of the team to a soldier, and abandoned its own lore, including breaking the strongest paladin-lion bond without any explanation - they failed to give the viewers any satisfying conclusion to this story. No matter what the next 13 episodes include, it won’t make up for the middle 39 episodes that literally brought tragedy after tragedy, especially to the team’s only LGBTQ+, multiple-minority character.

Josh Keaton is a consummate professional, and no doubt, Andrea Romano nailed it when working with him and the team. If there is one thing that is absolutely, without a doubt, above reproach with this show - it’s the voice acting. It is outstanding.

Voltron originally broke tropes, which was awesome. Allura wasn’t a princess locked away in a castle-ship but a knock-out, drag-out warrior who wasn’t afraid to get into the fray. Shiro, the strong-willed leader, wasn’t afraid to accept help. Keith, the loner, felt perhaps the most for his team. “Loverboy” Lance was actually the heart of the team, rather than a female character playing that part. Hunk, too, was strong but scared, and Pidge was not the stereotypical girl figure.

In Season 3, the story began to fall into the traps of the tropes it had broken, and it’s been a demoralizing and disappointing journey ever since.

VLD misses a lot of emotional beats. One of the biggest failures was not showing when the team learned about Keith’s Galran heritage. Then we never see the emotional fallout with the clone, other than the team referring to him as “evil.” The clone fought alongside with the team, perhaps longer than Shiro, and the team never mourned him. Sendak and Shiro’s fight? Shiro never says a word, and then Keith kills Sendak, taking away Shiro’s right to fight back against his one-time captors.

Lotor had Pidge’s dad and didn’t even try to make her a traitor to Team Voltron? Narti could control minds and not one of the paladins was ever brainwashed by her? Haggar did it to a clone, not even Shiro.

Even Allura and Lotor’s relationship - Allura’s anger was the stereotypical “woman scorned.”

So much potential, and it’s just wasted.

Shiro is important to many people in terms of representation, and I’ve read many posts about people who identify with him. I’m glad he’s had an impact upon your life, and I hope you can still take comfort in the earlier seasons. Please take care.

Shiro was revealed to be LGBTQ+, have a degenerative disease, and lose his place in Voltron - all in one season. The juxtaposition of the reveals is reprehensible, and it sends a horrible message to people who have mental and physical struggles, are LGBTQ+, and minorities.

That’s the issue - it’s not an excuse to kill all the LGBTQ+ characters. A show about war that has death and handles appropriately is one thing. Mourning the clone, mourning Shiro, mourning Narti - all those things should have happened, and they didn’t. (These characters were also all with physical and mental disabilities, DreamWorks.)

Showing children closure, helping them to understand death - is a good lesson to learn. But excluding Shiro from his only family, killing his one-time SO in a “fringe” move, and then killing the other LGBTQ+ couple in the show - not to mention killing Shiro four times - that’s a message DreamWorks should not be sending children.

Not to be technical - but that’s actually two things. Shiro did reunite with the team, but unfortunately, he wasn’t a part of the team. In fact, he was excluded to the point of no longer even being called a paladin, according to “The Journey Within,” and I agree. I wanted that in Season 7 as well.

I’m not sure, but I can say - I am sad that didn’t pan out, either. I wanted to see what Lotor and his generals could do in Sincline. I’m sad that Atlas, clearly built for Allura, didn’t talk to Allura first. Instead, she will always be Blue’s second choice, Lance Red’s second choice, and Keith left to Black because Shiro...didn’t not to fly Black anymore? I’m not quite sure why. The story never tells us.

Rounding back - Sincline had so much more potential than was realized.

There are a lot of things that failed to keep the story together. The first and foremost was - you need to keep the team together, or at the very least, not lose two of your main characters in one 26-episode batch, one character for 24 episodes, another for 12.

I can’t say for sure, but what I can say is - the moment the EPs saw Shiro not as a character but as a plot device, is the moment the story began to unravel.

new murder mystery lesbians (”mml”) ref bc the old one was too sparse for my liking

synopsis & format discussion

three lesbians. they’re cool. they’re gay. they solve crimes. what more can i say?

following the end of the war, lejla gallia finds herself in vienna and out of a job. intent on finally discovering herself (but mostly to avoid thinking about home), she keeps herself busy partying and hanging around her two (much richer) best friends. unfortunately you can’t run from every responsibility forever. especially if your friends are tired of you lazing around doing jack shit

three members of the no-magic division of the austrian army – all having enlisted to escape their family & past in some way – solve mysteries together in the uneasy peace following the end of the austro-prussian war.

format: this story is a short novella-size prequel (set in the 1870s, 20-30yrs beforehand) to my main fantasy austro-hungarian empire story, fs. both are planned to be webcomic/novel hybrids. at the moment, there’ll only be one story. the main goal is to get me writing and to test how fs would go, so i don’t really want to make a series of it! hopefully will finish the draft next year but it depends on how job searching goes

personal comments: in concept this is very self-indulgent; you’ll have to trust it’s not a wealth fetish story, although there’s an element of having my fancy victorian cake and eating it too. the plot is not directly relevant to, nor a prerequisite for, fs.

lejla gallia - ready to fucking party, but struggling with being herself & navigating the wide class boundaries her friends put her in, and very down on her own abilities. originally from a poor farming village, she ran away to join the army. currently living off of otto’s generosity

asl: 25-30yo, female, danube-swabian (ethnic german living in hungary) identity & presentation: she generally wears a loose, baggy suit, with a ribbon for a tie (she owns only one - if otto has a whim to take her out somewhere, she buys her new clothes). rather filled out. similar to illona in appearance, but a bit softer in the face. she’s trans miscellanea:

she has self-esteem issues - but beneath it all she's a joviality elemental who doesn't give a shit about what other people think of her for living it up as her best self. (if you insult her: you will be guffawed at)

her dialect is horrid to listen to and barely understandable; her hochdeutsch is decent but she slips out of it fairly frequently

her name is pronounced “lay-la”; i believe the spelling is neither og hungarian nor german but idc

likes: good food & talking to people, her friends, feeling part of a community, not really having to do anything

fave food: bigos, paprika sausage

otto - “lesbian gaston”. drowning in money & charisma. has networks everywhere. she dreams of entering politics, something only possible due to her immense wealth, but feels somewhat constrained by the rules of the nobility. has a fiancee, while also (apparently unapologetically) being best friends with benefits with lejla (and previously helene...?). it’s awkward. she’s pretty selfish, honestly, but the two still love her.

1. The core four + Kevin and Cheryl are attending a literary character party. What costume does each of them wear? Bonus: What costumes are the Southside Serpent characters wearing?

OH BOY. well, betty is elizabeth bennett. her instinct is obviously be nancy drew, but then decides she wants to play dress up a little bit. she tries valiantly to get jughead into a darcy couples costume, but his instinct is to just be sal paradise because he won’t have to buy anything for the costume.

betty tells him that if she’s not going to be nancy, he should go outside the box too. he then decides on dressing like the titular mummy from jane loudon’s the mummy! (he’s still a weirdo, remember)

veronica goes as daisy buchanan if not purely for the extravagant opportunity to dress like a flapper, archie comes as jim hawkins from treasure island, cheryl bucks expectation and attends as a female robin hood (she already loves archery), and kevin is absolutely sherlock holmes. he’d look so natural in a trenchcoat!

2. What extracurricular activities are Reggie, Ethel, Fangs, Midge, Toni and Sweetpea involved in?

besides sports, reggie’s extracurricular activity is definitely selling ground up oregano to middle schoolers and telling them it’s weed.

ethel is canonically a drama geek and that’s valid, but she’s also probably in band. i’m gonna go with....flutist.

fangs is also canonically a drama geek and a regular geek (less we not forget jughead used a larping club to lure fangs out of a self-imposed suspension) so i honestly am just waiting for him and kev to start up their dungeons and dragons club. (wow they are perfect for each other tho??? a dorkier bughead)

midge (RIP) was probably into 4-H bc i can’t get the concept of “klump farms” out of my head. she seemed like a genuinely sweet person who also was a regular teenager and was a cheerleader and probably volunteered at hospitals too idk

toni wanted to get laid so bad she became a cheerleader. or, ok, seriously i mean my headcanon is like, it’s bring it on, where toni was into gymnastics and dance in a v serious way but southside didn’t offer any curriculars that would allow her to do that, and she couldn’t afford gymnastics herself. turns out the closest thing riverdale has is cheerleading, which’ll do.

sweet pea is probably the lowkey nerdiest of them all. i was joking earlier that he’s probably secretly into anime, but more seriously: feel like he’d go for basketball officially and also probably has an interest in engineering. i mean, that interest began with pipe bombs, but. yanno. ya dreams gotta start somewhere!!!

3. Give me three of your favourite headcanons for Reggie

had a crush on betty until high school

does his dumbest shit for his dad’s attention, painfully unsubtle about it

is cripplingly afraid of being alone, which is why he surrounds himself by teammates at all times and/or can’t get past the pack mentality. has difficulty being vulnerable in spite of all that, can’t be honest with himself and/or with others.

4. It’s Saturday night and the core four are all hanging out by themselves at home. What is each of them up to?

betty is listening to the memory palace podcast while laying on her bed, feet crossed up in the air, doing her homework. cleaned her room earlier. wants to call polly. she doesn’t. stays up till two am for no reason other than her room is warm and full of golden light and it’s the only time the house is quiet. plugged back in her old nightlight, half out of spite after polly nearly threw it out, half genuinely. sometimes she thinks she’s still afraid of the dark. the irony isn’t lost on her.

jughead is working on his novel, american crime story is playing on the TV in the background, a bag of popcorn slowly rotating in the microwave. the trailer is empty and he chooses to think his dad is at work. emails his sister. he doesn’t remember when, but they’ve stopped talking about their mom. his tattoo itches. toni told him not to scratch at it.

veronica is drinking chamomile tea on a tray, scrolling through pinterest and making a european vacation mood board for the post-graduation trip she’d like to take with her friends. she wants to surprise them with it, all-expenses paid. she resists the urge to book flights years in advance. browses the barney’s website. doesn’t know why she gets such a thrill from online shopping. isn’t sure why she can’t stop.

archie is in the garage, his fingers strumming aimlessly over the strings of his guitar. wonders why his mother can’t be a lawyer here in riverdale. isn’t sure if music was ever his own, or something he thought he should want, because he didn’t want to work construction. or worse, because a woman found it attractive. brought his history textbook out with the intention to study. doesn’t. practices wonderwall, even though jughead laughs whenever the song comes upon.

5. What’s your headcanon for Jughead’s hat? Why does he wear it? What’s the origin story?

his mom made it when he was a kid, and growing up in threadbare clothes donated down the line of serpents or thrift store finds, it was the one thing that was truly his---made for him. with love.

being scrawny and quiet and outgrowing his pants too fast to replace them already set him apart. might as well let the hat seal the deal.

6. What is your Riverdale guilty pleasure ship? One that you don’t necessarily ship in canon but wouldn’t mind reading fanfiction for?

don’t think i have one, honestly?

7. Can Chuck be redeemed in your eyes? Any caveats or things that would need to happen to make this count?

yeah, it’s really interesting answer this question post 2x18, but---yes, i definitely think chuck can be redeemed. i never wanted him to be a villain in the first place, for so, so many reasons.

i mean, comics!chuck was a deliberate bucking of specific stereotypes that riverdale slid right back into without seeming to think about what it was they were saying by doing that. (related readings: x) and then the way they did it---ack.

outside of the vacuum of comics vs. show, i think that where we’re at culturally, we’re really asking men to unlearn their toxic masculinity. especially of adolescents who are still growing and changing---and what chuck did was certainly part of the vacuum of male privilege/toxic masculinity, but he faced consequences for that, and then he acknowledged it. actively has announced he wants to change, and i genuinely believe it at this point.

and while i wish chuck wasn’t the character they’re doing this with in the first place, “cancelled culture” can be really frustrating because it’s way too binary. it undermines the growth and self-crit we want people to be doing.

obviously, it doesn’t apply unilaterally, some people are abusive or cruel or malicious to the point where they lose their ability to profit off of it, and rightfully so---but with a character like chuck, whose main crime appeared to just be slut shaming, i actually appreciate a narrative where a male character owns up to how that was bad, why it was wrong, and how they’re going to change.

8. What is a storyline you’d like to see most explored on the show?

just---more familial dynamics. i cannot wait for gladys and JB, i think that’s going to be so meaty and tragic and emotional in the right ways. i want more of polly and betty’s relationship, and/or how betty feels watching her sister run away constantly, or just their dynamic in general. more of archie and fred navigating dreams vs. reality. i kinda don’t love veronica’s parents tho, and i’m not sure where they could take that in a way that i enjoy.

9. What is your favourite Riverdale fanfic trope or cliché?

pining, man. just. pining.

10. What is existing scene or storyline would you rewrite to better suit your tastes?

Title: Welcome to Woodstock (Part 4.)

Character(s): Jude Fisher and Lennon Rose (original female character) Summary: Lennon and Jude go out on a date. Word Count: 3,860 Author’s Note: Wow. So much fluff!!!! Also, shout out to @warriorqueen1991 for reading my mind! That picture you sent me... I was kinda distracted bc like damn he’s hot lmao ok I’m gonna stop rambling now. Enjoy! :)

Once Lennon made it back to her hotel room, she quickly went to the bathroom to take a brief shower. She didn’t know why, but she was a bit nervous to go on this date with Jude. It had been a while since she even thought about dating and the last time she was in a relationship, it ended horribly.

She thought about her parents, about Grace, about the people in Woodstock, and especially about Jude. People were so quick to welcoming strangers in this town that she finally realized why her mother had decided to stay here, aside from her father being one of the reason.

Lennon couldn’t imagine having a bad day while living in this town. Everyone seemed to be happy and carefree.

She finished her shower and decided to pull on black floral shorts that slightly loosened at the ends. Lennon then slipped on a regular white t-shirt and tied a knot in the front so that it rested just at the waistband of her shorts. She rubbed the towel along her dampened locks, allowing it to air dry into her normal waves.

Lennon was just about to lie down before she heard a knock at her door. She smiled to herself, but felt the nerves pick up once more. With a heavy sigh, Lennon slowly walked to the door. She couldn’t help but wonder why Jude wanted to go out with her. She just hoped that he didn’t think she was the type of woman who simply wanted a one-night stand. Though, Lennon wouldn’t mind. It had been a while since she slept with a man and she, too, had needs.

Once at the door, Lennon turned the handle and opened it slowly.

Jude stood at the other side of the door clad in his usual plaid shirt that was buttoned just enough to reveal a few chest hairs. The sleeves of his shirt were folded to his elbows, revealing a few tattoos that Lennon was instantly interested in. His dark jeans accentuated his long legs and his brown boots tied the outfit together. Jude removed his sunglasses and ran a hand through his disheveled hair, smiling instantly down at Lennon.

“Hi,” he said.

“Hi,” she replied.

“I hope you don’t mind riding on the back of my motorcycle.”

“That must be why your hair is a mess,” Lennon teased, slipping her sandals on and grabbing her bag and camera. “You don’t mind if I take my camera with me, do you?”

Jude smiled, shaking his head. “Of course not. I’ll even let you take a few photos of me,” he winked.

“Oh, I always wanted to dabble in portraiture.” Lennon teased, draping her camera and bag across her body before leaving her hotel room. She followed him to his motorcycle where Jude handed her a helmet.

“Have you ever ridden a motorcycle before?” Jude asked, slipping his own helmet on.

“Nope, but I always wanted to.”

“Are you afraid of going fast?”

“I think going fast is the only way to ride a motorcycle, right?” Lennon smiled, placing the helmet over her head and fastening the strap.

Jude grinned, “I’m glad you said that because then I don’t have to worry if my speed will be a problem or not.”

“Now I’m definitely going to expect you to go fast,” she grinned.

Jude climbed onto his motorcycle and then extended a hand out for her to take. Lennon smiled, taking his hand eagerly and climbing onto the back.

“You may want to remove your sandals, Lennon.”

She nodded, grabbing her sandals and placing them inside her bag.

“Not afraid to get your feet dirty?” Jude asked.

“That’s the least of my worries. Besides, a little dirt never hurt anyone,” Lennon answered. She wrapped her arms around his waist and grinned. “I’m ready.”

“Where have you been this entire time? I think you belong in Woodstock,” Jude teased.

She giggled, squeezing her arms before allowing herself to relax. It felt nice to be this close to a man again. Suddenly, Lennon was taken out of her thoughts when she heard the engine roaring to life.

“Hang on,” Jude said over his shoulder.

With a gentle push, Jude merged onto the main road and sped away from the curb that he was parked at. He had forgotten what it was like to have a woman who was interested in him. Majority of the women who were in Woodstock knew about him and his relationship with Grace, but even then, no one ever caught his interest.

Until Lennon decided to stroll into this small town and make her presence known. He had no idea what this meant for him or for her, but he didn’t want to dwell on it. Right now, Jude was going to have fun and he was going to show Lennon the beauty of Woodstock.

At a stoplight, Jude turned his head to look over at Lennon who was looking around the small town with a big grin on her face. He didn’t know why, but he felt a sudden rush of happiness at the sight of her smile.

“I want to show you a hidden place,” Jude said.

“Let’s go. I’m up for an adventure,” she replied.

Jude smiled to himself, speeding away once the light turned green. He continued to ride through the main road before turning to an off-road. Cole had told him about this area and he hoped that it would be worth the view since the sun was getting ready to set.

After thirty minutes of maneuvering along this mountain, Jude turned the motorcycle off once they were at a cliff overlooking a lake and the mountains. It looked gorgeous and he made a mental note to thank Cole later.

Jude removed his helmet and felt Lennon remove her arms from his waist. He bit his lower lip, glancing over at her once she climbed off the back of his motorcycle. Jude watched as she removed her helmet, running her hands through her wavy locks as the wind breezed past her.

She looked like a goddess.

“Wow…” Lennon smiled, looking out to the view. She brought her camera to her face and began taking photos, unaware that Jude had been watching her admiringly.

He grabbed a blanket from his backpack and draped it on the ground, taking a seat before he motioned for Lennon to sit next to him.

“Put the camera down for a second and enjoy the view,” he teased.

“I am enjoying the view… Through my lens.”

“Oh, you’re such a smartass,” Jude chuckled.

Lennon removed her bag and set it on the blanket before sitting next to him. She set her camera down for a moment and crossed her legs in a criss-crossed manner. She glanced over at him, smiling to herself. She felt like a high school teenager out on a date with her boyfriend.

“Do you bring all your potential women out here?” Lennon teased, smiling over at him.

“Just the pretty ones,” he grinned.

“You think I’m pretty?” She looked up at him, playfully batting her eyelashes.

“More or less,” he teased.

Lennon playfully shoved him, laughing quietly to herself. Jude chuckled, resting his hands on the blanket. One hand rested just near her hip and he felt her inch closer to him. He was sure that she was interested in him as much as he was interested in her.

“How long have you lived in Woodstock?” Lennon asked.

“Couple of years now. Grace helped me back on my feet. I hit rock bottom a few times and then I found this place.”

“Grace is an amazing woman. She’s told me stories about my parents and for some reason, I look at her and think of what my mom would have been like if she was still alive. She probably wouldn’t be growing weed, but other than that, I think they’re similar in personalities,” Lennon said.

Jude laughed quietly, “I know you’ve been here a few days, but have you ever wondered what it would have been like if you lived here? Do you think your life would be different?”

“Oh, definitely. My grandparents showed me photos of this place when I was younger. I was always so fascinated by it. If my parents were still alive, I know for sure I would have never become a photographer.”

“What’s the best thing about being a photographer? I can’t imagine all the tricks and secrets you must have from being one.”

Lennon looked over at him, smiling to herself. It was “golden hour” as she liked to call it. The sun was slowly beginning to set that it casted a softer light. As she was staring at Jude, she noticed how the natural light was accentuating Jude’s natural features.

Without replying to his question, Lennon took her camera and took a photo of him. He was smiling to himself, unaware that she had been staring at him. When he heard the click of her camera, he turned to face her and noticed the camera pointing directly at him.

“You took a picture of me?”

Lennon nodded, showing him the photo. “This is what’s the best thing about being a photographer.”

“What? A sexy subject?” Jude smirked.

“No, silly. You never know how the photo will turn out and no matter how many times you take the same picture, there will always be one that will stand out from the rest. Also, pictures captivate certain emotions that are intimate to other people. Like this. Your smile… It’s so genuine and if a stranger were to see this, they’d immediately smile.”

“Why would they smile? Because I’m so handsome?”

Lennon laughed quietly, “You’re just trying to get me to agree with you, aren’t you?”

“I don’t know. It hasn’t worked yet.”

She shook her head, smiling to herself. They were both looking down at the photo on the screen of her camera, their heads closer to one another.

“Strangers would smile at this photo because it represents happiness, your carefree nature that in the midst of all the dangers in the world, a smile like this should never go unnoticed. It reminds them that sometimes a smile will light up the darkness in this world,” Lennon finished, biting her lower lip. “Okay, I’m sorry. That was –”

“It’s beautiful. What you said… You’re right.”

“You’re just saying that…”

“No, look. Here. Give me the camera.” Jude said, extending a hand out for her.

“But…”

“I won’t drop it. I promise.” Hesitantly, Lennon handed the camera to Jude and arched a brow. When she noticed that he was simply scrolling through various photos that she had taken, she took this opportunity to look out to the view. She smiled to herself at how beautiful it was.

Then, she heard a click. Lennon turned her head to look at Jude. It seemed like the roles were now reversed.

“What did you do?” She asked.

“I took a photo of you. Look.” Lennon looked down at the photo that he had taken. She bit her lower lip. She never liked pictures taken of her.

“Your smile lights up the darkness in this world,” Jude repeated. “You’re right. We protest against war and hate and try to spread the message about love and peace that we’re looking in the wrong place. This picture… It reminds me that sometimes a smile is all you need to send a message.”

“You just turned what I said against me,” Lennon smiled.

“Not against you. I’m agreeing with you and I’m proving it by showing you a photo of yourself. Now, how about we take one together before the sun disappears?” Jude suggested.

Lennon shrugged a shoulder, “I don’t know. I don’t like having my picture taken.”

“Well, that’s too bad. I want some memory of today.” Jude smiled, wrapping an arm around her waist and pulling her closer to his side. He held the camera away from their faces and glanced down at her before smiling directly at the camera.

With a quiet click, Jude brought the camera closer to them and kept his arm wrapped around her. He felt her lean her head against him before he glanced down at the picture.

Lennon immediately smiled to herself. So did Jude.

“See? Two smiles are better than one,” he commented.

“You just wanted a picture with me,” she teased.

“Maybe…”

Lennon smiled and allowed herself to lean against him. She watched him set her camera down before they both were watching the sun begin to set behind the mountains. She couldn’t believe that since coming to Woodstock, she would be welcomed with open arms. She had never felt this welcomed by a community ever in her life.

It made her feel like she belonged here, like this was her home.

“You want to grab something to eat?” Jude asked, interrupting the comfortable silence.

“I’d like that, yeah.” Lennon stood up, grabbing her camera and bag to drape it across her chest before she helped Jude fold the blanket. “Thanks for bringing me out here, Jude.”

“It’s no problem, really. I’ve always wanted to see what the view was all about. I’m glad I did and I’m glad it was with you.”

“You’ve never been here?” Lennon asked, biting her lower lip.

“Nope. Though, I’m sure I’ll come back here more often.”

“Hopefully not without me,” she added, walking to his motorcycle and slipping the helmet on.

Jude set the blanket back into his bag before climbing onto his motorcycle, smiling to himself at her statement.

“Oh, I’m bringing you everywhere with me from now on,” he teased.

“I wouldn’t mind. You seem to know where the beautiful spots are.”

Jude smiled, helping her onto the back of his motorcycle. He grinned to himself when he felt her arms wrap around him once more. He reached down and let his fingertips run across the back of her hand before sighing contentedly to himself. He didn’t know if it was a good idea to get attached to someone who wasn’t going to stay in Woodstock, but it was a risk he was willing to take.

With a roar to his engine, Jude carefully led them away from the mountain and back onto the road. The sun had set, but the sky was painted with colors of orange and blue. It was beautiful and Lennon couldn’t help but squeeze him slightly before allowing herself to rest her cheek against the back of his shoulder.

Once they made it back downtown of Woodstock, Jude pulled up to a curb in front of a small restaurant. He turned his motorcycle off and climbed off, extending a hand out for Lennon. She removed her helmet, setting it on the seat of the bike. Hesitantly, she took a step forward and unbuckled the strap of Jude’s helmet and removed it from his head, watching as his hand ran through his disheveled hair.

“Thanks,” he mumbled.

“The helmet wasn’t helping your rugged look,” she teased.

“Does that mean you’re warming up to my beard and shaggy hair?”

“Mm… Maybe.”

“I’ll take that as a yes,” Jude grinned, leading her to the small restaurant and holding the door open for her.

Lennon stepped inside, watching as the workers and few of the customers turned their heads to see the pair walk in.

“Hey, Jude. Want a booth?” A woman asked.

“That’d be great, Sarah. Thanks.”

Sarah led them to a small booth and set down menus onto the table. Jude motioned for Lennon to take a seat first before he slid into the seat across from her.

“You want anything to drink, honey?” Sarah asked, looking over at Lennon and then over at Jude.

“I’ll get a beer. What about you, Lennon?”

“Do you have a glass of wine? If not, I’m fine with a beer too.”

“You’ve got a classy one, Jude,” she teased, causing Lennon to giggle.

“In that case, I’ll get a beer.” Lennon said, watching as the woman nodded with a polite smile. She walked away from the table before Lennon opened the menu to look down at the variety of food.

After a few minutes, Lennon shut her menu and looked up at him. It didn’t look like he opened his own menu to look at the food choices.

“Do you know what you want?” Lennon asked.

“Oh yeah. I knew it before we even stepped inside. What about you? Did you decide what you want to eat?”

“Yeah. Their burgers look amazing, so I think I’m going to go ahead and get that.”

Sarah walked to their table, setting down their beers and also an extra glass of water. She pulled out her small notepad and looked over at Jude.

“The usual, handsome?” She asked.

Jude smiled, “You know it, Sarah.”

“And what about you, darling? What can I get for you?”

“A bacon cheeseburger with fries, please.” Lennon smiled, grabbing both their menus to hand to Sarah once she finished writing down their orders.

“You got it. The food will be out shortly.”

“Thanks, Sarah,” Jude called.

Lennon grabbed her beer, taking a sip of the alcohol and making a face at the bitter taste. Jude laughed quietly, shaking his head.

“I’ll be right back,” he said.

Jude stood up from the booth, grabbing her beer and walking to the counter to speak with Sarah. Lennon bit her lower lip, watching as Sarah handed him a glass of red wine before she dropped her eyes. Lennon didn’t know why she decided to drink beer. She was aware that Jude knew how much she hated it.

“All right. I’ve got your glass of wine, m’lady.”

“I’m sorry. I thought I could drink beer,” she said, sipping at the wine and smiling instantly at the taste.

“I don’t know why you try to drink beer when you don’t like it.”

“I don’t know either,” Lennon shrugged, looking over at him.

Jude smiled, taking a swig of his beer before setting it down.

“You know, I had fun,” Jude said.

“I did too…”

“We should do it again.”

“I don’t know how long I’ll be staying here, Jude.”

“Stay another week. We’ve got a festival coming up next weekend. At least stay until then.”

“What’s the festival for?” Lennon asked.

Jude narrowed his eyes. “Ooh, you play hard to get, don’t you?”

“I do like a game of a little cat and mouse,” she laughed quietly.

“I don’t mind chasing you around,” Jude commented.

“It seems like that way, doesn’t it?”

“Doesn’t seem like you mind.”

“Well, you’re cute, so I’ll give you that,” Lennon complimented.

“Wait. You called me cute and I didn’t have to trick you into saying it? Oh, Lennon. I think we’re getting somewhere.”

She blushed, dropping her gaze to her glass of wine. Lennon loved how easy it was to slip in a teasing banter with him, but the moment she let a compliment slip past her lips, she knew there was no turning back.

“I knew you liked the rugged look,” Jude teased.

Lennon looked up at him and crumpled a napkin to playfully toss it at him. She watched it bounce off his forehead and land into his lap. She giggled quietly, shaking her head as a smile of amusement splayed on Jude’s lips.

“I’m not going to reply to that.”

“But by not replying, you do know you’re secretly agreeing with me, right?” Jude smiled.

Lennon laughed quietly, shaking her head. She glanced over at Sarah who walked to their table to set their food down. She could feel Jude’s eyes on her and she tried her best to not look up at him; her cheeks were still pink.

“She’s blushing, isn’t she, Sarah?” Jude grinned.

“Jude, leave the poor girl alone.”

“Thank you. He likes to tease me,” Lennon smiled, not realizing how dirty that sounded.

“Oh, I’m sure he does,” Sarah winked, walking away.

“Oh god. I didn’t mean it like that,” Lennon said embarrassingly, covering her face with her hands as the blush in her cheeks reddened even further.

Jude, on the other hand, was chuckling to himself. “I can tease you if you’d like,” he smirked.

Lennon looked up at him, narrowing her eyes playfully. “You know, the next time we’re near a pool of water, I’m going to push you in.”

Jude laughed, “I sure hope you do because then if I’m going in the water, I’ll be sure to bring you with me.”

After their dinner, Jude decided to walk Lennon back to her hotel. It was only a ten-minute walk anyway. When Lennon shivered, Jude quickly ran to his bike to grab a jacket from his bag before he draped it around her shoulders.

“Wouldn’t want you getting sick when we have another date tomorrow,” he said.

Lennon looked up at him and smiled, snuggling into the jacket. She inhaled the cologne that lingered and smiled to herself, feeling his arm wrap around her shoulders. Lennon leaned against him, resting her cheek against his shoulder absently.

“It’s been a while since I had gone on a date, Jude. So, thank you for today.” Lennon said, glancing up at him as they continued to walk downtown Woodstock.

“It’s been a while for me too, but you don’t need to thank me. I had just as much fun.”

They remained quiet for the remainder of the walk, simply enjoying each other’s presence and company. Jude reveled in the fact that she had rested her cheek against him which allowed him to pull her closer to his side.

Though, once at her hotel room, Lennon turned around and removed the jacket from around her shoulders to hand back to him. Jude simply shook his head.

“You may get cold on the walk back,” Lennon said, biting her lower lip.

“That’s okay. Keep it until tomorrow. This time I’ll be the Cinderella and leave something of mine,” Jude smiled.

Lennon nodded. She wanted to invite him inside, but she knew that while she was ready to date, a part of her wasn’t ready to take that next step.

“So –”

“I’ll see you tomorrow, Lennon. Good night,” Jude interrupted. He leaned down and kissed her cheek, smiling to himself.

“Oh, okay. Good night, Jude. Get home safely,” she replied, opening the door of her hotel room and stepping inside once he began walking away.

Lennon smiled to herself once she was alone. He didn’t expect anything of her; he was such a gentleman. She didn’t know how she would be able to go back home now that she had a reason to stay at Woodstock.

Making a Case for 13 Going on 30.

I can still remember my Wednesday evening History of Film class in Film school. (Yes I went to film school, we can still like cheesy rom-coms) And the night my professor, a former DP for Columbia during the “golden age of film” stood in front of the entire class and proclaimed we were about to view, what most experts call the greatest film of all time. You guessed it, Citizen Kane.

He went on to explain that what made it so great was the technicality and the innovation of it. The first film to use flashback and continuous wide shots, blah blah. I thought it was a snooze fest of straight white male nonsense. Yeah technically it’s cool they did all that with cut and paste film. I respect that shit, I do. But Citizen Kane is one of the most un-relatable stories ever. At least to me as a gay woman. It’s like the Catcher in the Rye of film. I have a hard time identifying with rich white dudes who feel like they don’t belong in a world created for and by them. If anyone actually read this blog I bet I’d get ALL the haters up in here leaving me comments about how oppressed men are now. Do it. I masturbate with male tears.

ANYWAYS. Fuck Citizen Kane in it’s boring ass face. I’m here to talk about the greatest movie of all time. The movie that is best picture every year in my heart and soul always and the one movie by which every other movie is measured. 13 Going on Motherfucking 30.

Yes it’s entertaining. Yes it’s a feel good romish-com with a cute cast. Yes it has Judy Greer. But what makes it the best? I’ll break it down for you.

Christa B Allen

For you true Jgar fans you’ll note that this was not Christa’s only time playing a young Jen. She also does in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (another one of my faves but more problematic). Christa’s got the looks and the chops. She’s not only a dead ringer for the younger Rink, she’s also actually a great actress. Here’s what she looks like now BTW.

Pretty fucking spot on from the casting director I’d say. So if Christa B. Allen was the homerun, Sean Marquette (young MRUFF) is the grand slam.

Then and now:

Yeah that could be Mark Ruffalo in the early 2000′s. And Sean does a great job himself in the younger role. Moving on.

Where have you seen her? Bitch, everywhere. She has a staggering list of nominations and awards from film, tv and stage where she’s had a phenomenal career. My favorite roles are between that gem up there in Edward Scissorhands and the woman of many marriages in the Jane Austen Book Club. She’s a legend and she’s NOT EVEN THE STAR OF THIS FILM.

It’s easier to tell you what she HASN’T been in. Like Kathy Baker, she’s made a career out of small, scene stealing roles. She also has a pretty impressive career in casting.

I’m not going do Jen and Mark because we all know all of their shit. I’m the biggest JGar fan on earth so don’t get me started, but they are obviously mega stars and I need to save some room for.......here it comes...it’s finally here...you know it was coming..and here WE. FUCKING. GO.

JUDITH THERESE EVANS GREER

If Judy BAD BITCH OF LIFE Greer is in a movie? I’m seeing it. Why? BC SHE’s in EVERY MOVIE. Judy Greer is a brilliant silky chameleon with ferrari engine precision comedic timing. I would say she ties with Melanie Lynksey for all time underrated actress in history, but I think she pushes just past her since her body of work is unbelievably large. She has done indie, rom-com, sci-fi blockbuster, you name it. She can and has done anything and everything and I love her with every sad and broken cell in my fangirl body. She doesn’t support scenes, she carries them. And the only reason you think someone else is the star is because Judy wants you to think that. There are like 2 people on this Earth I love as much as I love Judy Greer and they are basically my mom and Claire Danes. She is an angel we do not deserve sent to us straight from a place we can never know. I legitimately worry that not enough people know what a treeey zzzurrre we have in Judy. I will do whatever I can to always spread the Gospel of Greer in this flaming shit bag of a world. If you haven’t seen Addicted to Fresno, please excuse yourself from whatever meaningless nonsense you’re doing right now to go watch it. Thanks.

STORY

A perfect cast, and yes this is one, does not a good film make on it’s own (see all those shitty Gary Marshall vignette films).

Lucky for us we also have a perfect story. This film has everything: redemption, friendship, love, betrayal, materialism, capitalism, competition, fucking TIME TRAVEL. And a dance number to goddamn Thriller.

This movie created the catch-phrase, “Fabuloso”, which would eventually become the best smelling cleaning product of all time. It brought back Razzles, no doubt saving that entire brand from bankruptcy. It has complicated parental relationships, complex female friendships, a pre-wedding love confession scene, an NYC fall photoshoot montage, an accidentally fall-down kiss scene, a popular high school guy now a balding loser scene, a heroine saves the magazine scene, and a Pat Benetar slumber party pillow fight.

SETTING

NEW. MOTHERFUCKING. YORK. CITY. Is there any other place where a 30 year old can be the editor of a fashion magazine and live in an $8 million apartment???

SOUNDTRACK

I mean, you’ve got The Go-Go’s, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Billy Joel, Liz Phair, Rick Springfield, Talking Heads, Soft Cell, I COULD ON AND ON.

CONCLUSION

I am a rom-com SLUT. I have seen all of them, but this one is the stand out. Instead of limiting Jenna to the “she falls in love and finally changes her life” trope, it explores ALL the reasons Jenna’s life went off track. Not just because she lost her best friend along the way, but because now she’s dishonest, disloyal, and though she has the trappings of the life she dreamed of, she isn’t the person she thought she would be. In fact, Matty is not even the main thread of all of it.

The takeaway here is that being present is more important than worrying and wishing about the future.Which is actually some intense deep Buddhist shit.

By living in the moment we’re in, we can shape our lives however we want. Jenna was so intent on creating her idea of a perfect life, that she missed what was right in front of her. When she got a glimpse of what she thought she wanted, she realized how empty it was. The money, the cool job, the $8 million apartment doesn’t mean shit when you don’t have any real connections to anyone. And is there any better moment then when she goes back to her closet birthday party, kisses Matty and slams Tom-Tom’s drink in her face and calls her a “Biatch”? NO. It’s the most satisfying moment in American cinema.

TWO THINGS

1.This movie has 0 diversity and is 100% straight white people problems. I acknowledge it. It is problematic. I don’t know what to say. It was the time, I didn’t make the movie, and thank the lorde things are changing.

2.Lucy’s take on Poise re-branding was 100,000% better than that Abercrombie bullshit Jenna came up. Don’t @ me.

I'm 19 years old living in Toronto Ontario Canada. I've been riding street bikes since 16 years old and have obtained my M class license. (Ontario's full motorcycle license) My dad is moving the Family back to our hometown of Jacksonville Florida and was curious as to insurance prices since there is no way in hell a 19 year old boy from Toronto can afford a premium on a 600cc sport bike. I currently have a premium on a ninja 250R around 2000$ a year and a secondary driver policy on my dads R6 around 1100$. since my bike here in Canada goes by KMPH i would need to sell it and save myself the hassle of transferring all the info. I had auto insurance with state farm and my policy was $180 (just liablilty)per month for 12 months. I ran into some issues with money and could not pay so I cancelled the policy and avoided driving for a little over a month. I recently went to another agency to find a cheaper insurance and they said since i had a registered vehicle that was uninsured for more than 30 days, there is a penalty. Now I pay $340 for 8 months (just liablilty). 3 agency's told me the same thing. My question is will this ever change? How long will I have this penalty ?
