It's so wild that there's very little fandom content for The Magic Circle despite having really great ratings on Steam since fuckin 2015 and being very well liked.

During her “All Too Well” speech given on the first night of her Parisian tour dates Taylor said, "I think [this tour has] probably been the best experience of my life … But one thing I wish I would’ve gotten to do is … I wish I would’ve gotten to play all of our tours for you. And this tour, the Eras Tour, is a chance for us to bring you all of my favourite memories from those tours. Tours where I didn’t get to come see you in France—and get to collect all of them and experience all of it together."

And in that moment, a lot of her new costume choices (almost two dozen were added over the course of the opening weekend of the European leg) suddenly made sense. 

Why her 1989 skirts fall closer to their original 2015 tour circle skirt silhouette (the 1989 Tour had 8 dates in Europe). 

Why her Fearless dress so closely honours the black/white fringed Mandalay dress from the Fearless Tour (the Fearless Tour only visited half a dozen places in England). 

And, of course, why her Speak Now dress feels like a more voluminous take on the Reem Acra gown she wore on the original Speak Now tour in 2011. More star power = more skirt circumference. 

It’s even more apt that she would turn to that very same designer to recreate the magic. This particular gown is a custom take on Look 26 from the ‘Glamour A La Reem’ collection featuring beautiful almost seashell-like pleats and crystal embellishments. How amazing is it to see a more glamourous revival of a dress that was once just a simple, shin-length gown? And those ballet flats! 

A fun fact? Even for the dozen European dates of the Speak Now Tour, Taylor actually never wore her previous Reem Acra dress which debuted for the North American dates. For Europe, Taylor actually wore a different dress by Collette Dinnigan that (naturally) involved an on-stage costume change.

Map of werewolf witch trials

   Mapping the location of 223 witch trials that included accusations of turning into a wolf, mostly based on Lorey's online list (just under 200 listed). Blécourt gives a few corrections to Lorey's list, Klaniczay has 13 Hungarian trials, and Madar, Metsvah and Winkler collectively give 14 Estonian trials; Metsvah says there are 30 recorded in Estonia in total, but data on the rest weren't provided. When a location has multiple trials, the crosses form a circle around the city so as to not overlap - this is most obvious for Tallinn, Riga, and Sopron.  

   The initial point was to visualise how the trials spread over time, but what it also makes really obvious is how tightly clustered most of them are - this matches how regional the witch trials in general were, but also that beliefs in werewolves weren't evenly spread across Europe; hence the lack of anything in Great Britain, Basque Country, but weirdly also Scandinavia where southern Sweden is known for having a decent number of werewolves in its folklore.  

   Finally, after going through all of Lorey's descriptions, there's a few that stood out that I wanted to share (machine translated from German):  

   1619 Tonnis Steven von Grevenstein, shepherd in Kallenhardt (Electoral Cologne Office of Rüthen). “Out of pain and unbearable torment, I had to say that  I was a magician and a Wehrwolf, but God in heaven knows that everything is a lie and I have never seen a devil in my life.”  

   1652 Wilhelm Scheffern, shepherd from Metterich (di Metternich near Münstermaifeld, Kurtrier). One of the reasons he was talked about was because - in contrast to his successors - there were never any losses due to wolf attacks during his time as a shepherd. "It is entirely believed that the defendant could turn himself into a werewolf" (6th count) and "that he ... once made himself invisible in the field" (point 15). However, previously in points 2 and 3 "that his "The father was burned because of the vice" and "that the defendant's sisters were burned years ago because of the vice of magic." (Court verdict not received; according to Krämer, however, probably executed.)  

   1661 Cuno Jung, a shepherd from Westerburg, had not defended himself strongly enough against being called a werewolf. Because his parents were already under suspicion and his sister had been executed as a witch, he spoke out against the witchcraft trials. He also refused to take part in an execution as a lay judge. He once even tried to buy his way out as an observer at a witch trial. Executed in Westerburg.

Indigenous Nations Poets

A couple of weeks ago UWM Special Collections hosted an all-day LanguageBack poetry-writing workshop with 21 Indigenous participants, sponsored by Indigenous Nations Poets (In Na Po), a national Indigenous poetry community committed to mentoring emerging writers and nurturing the growth of Indigenous poetic practices, recognizing the role of poetry in sustaining tribal sovereign nations and Native languages. This was one of three workshops taking place in Wisconsin, and our session focused on the poetic use of Oneida and Ojibwe, two of the six main Indigenous languages practiced in Wisconsin. The workshop was organized and led by In Na Po founding director, UWM professor emerita of English, and 2015-16 Wisconsin Poet Laureate Kimberly Blaeser. Participants included young writers, community members, poetry scholars, and Indigenous-language specialists.

Much of the day was spent in Indigenous-language instruction and poetry-writing exercises. Participants also spent time reviewing selections from our extensive collection of poetry by Ojibwe and Oneida writers, as well as Indigenous-language materials in Oneida and Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa). One of the participants, poet and York University English professor Kenzie Allen (Oneida), a PhD graduate from UWM, was very surprised and deeply honored that her new collection of poetry Cloud Missives (Tin House, 2024) was included in the selections.

UWM professor emeritus of English Lane Hall, co-founder of the Overpass Light Brigade, also joined us for the day, and as night fell we each grabbed a Light Brigade letter, marched from the library to UWM's Fire Circle (much to the curiosity of passerbys), and performed a series Indigenous-language light displays. Afterwards, we warmed ourselves with a meal of wild rice, frybread and buffalo tacos, and corn and venison chowder (yuuuumy!!). We ended the day with readings of work created during the workshop. Just magical!

i had a cup of coffee and started writing stream of consciousness about "the good place" and more things that bugged me

ok, so like, the thing with *all* sci-fi and fantasy is that it is necessarily constrained by the lived experience and imagination of the writer. so you always have to keep in mind the context of the person who wrote it (e.g. jrr tolkein, gene roddenberry, douglas adams, etc).

but i think what bugs me about "the good place" is that it's a whole team of writers, which should expand the imagination of the show (and i think you can see a good example of that in a show like "star trek," for instance, which also had input from its performers)...

but the whole time i'm like, i'm just inside michael schur's head. and i gotta give him props for trying to translate philosophy for The Masses, but the ... the... the NPR-ness of it all!!!! bugs meeee!!!! i notice it in the writing for every character...

i think michael's character ends up the strongest and most consistent, but there are so many anomalies within eleanor, chidi, jason, and tahani that it bugs me... so many "they would not say that / do that." even with being rebooted so many times

and tbh, speaking of the rebooting, one thing that i just cannot get over in the show's concept and later-season story arcs is the question of human consciousness, the biology of being alive and being dead... in the afterlife there's so many references to body things, body comforts, the 5 senses, and the entire time i'm like, that's all predicated on chemical responses from having a living body... so then what exactly does their afterlife consciousness consist of... hm?! this is me being very literal-brained but i just cannot stop saying "what does your consciousness consist of" at the TV screen. i like the moral / ethical puzzles they ask but it's just too much like "it's exactly like your (middle class american) life on earth in every single way except also a little bit of magic."

i think that, weirdly, even though "hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy" is very much written by a british guy in the 1970s, it still has a broader imagination than "the good place." i would have to re-read it to compare more closely... douglas adams is the benchmark, for sure. and there were some clear douglas adams influences in the good place. i just kept feeling like, for as long as that show is (14 hours!), they kept circling around the same limited ideas and i wanted so much moreeeee. like the hitchhiker's guide sequels. those got so weird. so i know that "the good place" could have gotten weirder. and gayer.

all that being said, when i check reddit, it did blow a lot of people's minds, and the ending really upset people just from suggesting "a nothingness after the afterlife," let alone the nothingness after this life (which is real), so, maybe it was as weird as it possibly could have been for a sitcom in 2015-2019.

Pre-announced Dragon Age: The Veilguard game locations behind the cut.

This post is about my level of interest in the locations our party will visit.

Tevinter: While I have been curious about Tevinter since Dragon Age Origins, after I finished DA2+DLCs I felt that it was a missed opportunity to have not had a DLC or, at least, a big side quest that took us into Tevinter. After DAI came out I felt *cheated* that the game never took us over the Tevinter border.

DAO waved Tevinter around as the evil bogeyman, but that was fine given the scope of the game. On the other hand DA2 set up a lot of complex issues that would have been far more interesting, at least to me, if there was a brief visit to Tevinter. By the time DAI came out, there was no excuse especially given the main plot.

That said, a party of me in 2014-2015 was sort of thankful that none of the games actually _went_ to Tevinter during DA2 or DAI because, honestly, this is Bioware and the DA writing team we are talking about. My spideysense for potential cringe...

Right now? A big mix of contradictory, competing feelings but yes, yes. Yes I will buy this game just to take a trip to Tevinter.

Rivain: We are going to Rivain! We are going to Rivain! We are going to Rivain! GET IN THE CAR WE ARE GOING TO RIVAIN! (please do not fuck this up Bioware)

Honestly, given how differently Rivain thinks about magic, mages, and circles compared to the places we have been for the prior three games, I am so ready for this take and all of the compare and contrast that will come with it.

20250105: The History of LEGO Elves day 04 41071 Aira's Creative Workshop (2015, 98 pieces, 60 different parts) Aira is an elf with air and wind elemental magic powers. She has lavender tapered long hair with braids and white tips and elf ears, light nougat skin, lavender print tattoos across her forehead and white wind on one cheek, lavender eyes, a strapless white torso with dark purple and gold scale pattern with a dark purple belt with wind symbol in the center, a lavender wind tattoo on one shoulder, and a white skirt with a lavender ruffled hem and white sandals with lavender winged straps. The Elvendale Fandom wiki has a good article about Aira's personality and role in the Elves story :) Aira's hair is consistent throughout the sets she appears in, including 41071 Aira's Creative Workshop, 41073 Naida's Epic Adventure Ship, 41077 Aira's Pegasus Sleigh, 41176 Secret Market Place, 41178 Dragon Sanctuary, 41180 Ragana's Magic Shadow Castle, 41184 Aira's Airship and the Amulet Chase, and 41193 Aira and the Song of the Wind Dragon. Aira's minidoll head with the lavender forehead tattoo and wind emblem on one cheek, this torso, and this skirt appears in 41071, 41073, and 41077. The set itself consists of the minidoll Aira and the white bird Pluma. Aira has a brick-built wing set held in each hand with a light bluish gray 1x2 plate with bars on each end on a light bluish gray 1x2 by 2x2 bracket holding pearl gold minifigure wings and magenta 1x1 plates with side loops holding white plumes. A separately built work table with scissors, a ruler, brick-built jars and drawers, a white plume, and a magenta 2x4 tile with printed map sit to one side. Another built item includes white steps with dark purple tiles on top. The last small section of the build includes tan arches on a medium lavender 4x6 plate with a white bird with black designs sitting in the middle on a perch. New and unique parts for this set include: -Magenta 2x4 tile with printed scroll work and a castle in the clouds (unique to this set). -Medium lavender 4x6 plate was only found in this set and Friends set 41308 Stephanie's Friendship Cakes. -Lavender 2x2 circle tile with printed white outstretched wings was found in 41071, 41077, 41078 Skyra's Mysterious Sky Castle, and 41184, as well as the Elves Magical Adventure activity book (9780545872539). -Pearl gold feathered minifigure wing was introduced in this set. -Tan 2x2 map with large key was introduced in this set and found in six of the remaining 2015 Elves sets. -Pluma the bird is unique to this set. -White 1x4 printed ruler tile is unique to this set. This set was available for purchase 1 March - 31 December 2015. The LEGO Catalogue from North America says it was $9.99 and "Includes Aira Windshistler mini-doll figure and Pluma the bird!" Parts inventory for this set can be found on BrickLink or Rebrickable with a free download of the instructions available on LEGO.com or Rebrickable.

Divination: Setting the Tone

Divination is a practical tool that many--if not all--witches and magical people. There are several purposes and benefits we can obtain from divination, such as guidance, general insight, healing from our past, and planning for our future. Typical tools for divination are runes, tarot, and scrying.

As an easily-distracted person, it is necessary for me to have a proper routine and structure for all of my magical practices, large or small. Typically, the first step in ritual is meditation; but before I can meditate, the tone of the room must be set. The best thing about witchcraft is that it is a tailored experience for each individual, which means all aspects of the craft are customized to your own personality, craft, and goals.

I have composed a simplistic yet thorough structure for my spiritual works ranging from tarot readings, divination, meditation, and rituals. This structure is as follows:

physically cleaning/organizing the room

energetically cleansing the room with incense

gathering materials

self-cleanse

meditation

(when in ritual) casting the circle, ritual, closing the circle

self-cleanse

The element I am going to focus on in this post is the significance of meditation music in my magical practices. Due to my inability to focus well and maintain the "right" level of focus, I listen to music to help ground me in the present moment. Doing so allows me to prepare and participate in meditation with a clear mind and intention.

There are a handful of songs that I use regularly. During the inception of my Pagan path, I would typically choose a Laura Sullivan song to align with--typically off of Mystical America or Pianoscapes for the Trails of North America. Sullivan has created numerous works--many of which have won awards and special recognition--that attune with natural elements, thus, creating a deeper connection for the listener. This is especially useful for witches, as we call upon the Earth's natural forces to aid our magical works.

Many of Sullivan's works are in reverence of nature with seemingly Pagan undertones. (I tried digging around her website and social media but couldn't find direct statements regarding her spirituality. I think it's safe to say that she at least has a love of the natural world and takes inspiration from love, life, and her spirituality.) While I could not find information regarding her own spiritual path, there are Pagan and other spiritual elements from other cultures within her album artworks. For example, on the cover art of Pianoscapes for the Trails of North America features a unique collage of forest paths found in North America. Mystical America, contains a three triskeles and female figure with a divine aura.

For the last year or so, my go-to meditation music is (judge me--I dare you 😂) is a Sith Meditation. It suits my recent spells and rituals--the deep hum of its haunting tones allows me to focus my mind with intent and harness a darker, more profound level of attunement with deities and overall goal/purpose.

British Folklore Book Recommendations

Black Dog Folklore (2015) by Mark Norman: the most comprehensive overview on the market of spectral dog folklore in Britain, albeit fairly hard to get hold of. Recommended for people interested in hellhounds.

Cloven Country: The Devil and the English Landscape (2022) by Jeremy Harte: a survey and analysis of Devil folklore in England (and a bit in Wales). I really can't recommend Harte enough; he's witty, eloquent, insightful and well-read. Recommended for people who want to learn about Devil folklore or just want a good book; this was the book that got me into British folklore in a big way.

Daemonologie (1597) by James Stuart: the standard text on witchcraft and witch-hunting in the English-speaking world. Since there's a lot of Scots, I'd recommend listening to it here, with definitions of the words. Recommended to witch trial nerds and other people trying to understand the mindset of Protestant witch hunters.

Cunning Folk: Life in the Era of Practical Magic (2024) by Tabitha Stanmore: a solid and accessible work on English folk magic between 1350 and 1650. Recommended to people who want a history/sociology of magic.

A Dictionary of Fairies (1976) by Katharine Briggs: this is the standard (and certainly most comprehensive) book on faerie lore in the British Isles. Sadly, it's out of print so unless you have a lot of money or access to a university library (I'm a student; guess which category I'm in) you won't be able to get hold of it. Recommended for people able to get hold of it who want the full scoop on British fairies.

Explore Fairy Traditions (2004) by Jeremy Harte: I've already praised his work on Devil lore, so now I'm praising his work on faeries, which can be found for free online here. Recommended for people who want an overview of faerie lore but don't have access to a university library or an obscene budget for books.

The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies (1692) by Robert Kirk: one of the key collections of Scottish Highland faerie lore, with one hell of a backstory that I will relate to anyone who asks. Can be found online here. Recommended to serious folklore and/or faerie nerds.

The Stations of the Sun: A History of the Ritual Year in Britain (20021) by Ronald Hutton: the standard volume (in both academic and popular circles) on the history of festivals in Britain, with chapters for pretty much every festival of note in Britain detailing its origins and variations throughout time and place. Recommended to people who want to learn more about festivals and to those who want to incorporate some folk tradition into their life.

The Stripping of the Altars: Traditional Religion in England 1300-1540 (1992) by Eamon Duffy: written as a rebuke to then-traditional Protestant histories of the English Reformation, the first half is the standard overview of Late Medieval English Christianity - for the purposes of people reading this, it's got chapters on the liturgical calendar and folk magic, as well as being where I discovered the Lyke-Wake Dirge. The second half, on the English Reformation itself, is substantially worse due to, as mentioned above, the author's conscious anti-Protestant stance leading him to understate support for it at the time. Recommended to people who want to find out about medieval religion and don't mind copious amounts of Middle English

A Treasury of British Folklore: Maypoles, Mandrakes and Mistletoe by Dee Dee Chainey (2018): a really good introduction to/overview of British folklore. Recommended for people starting to learn about it (it's the first book I owned on the topic).

The Watkins Book of English Folktales (2022) by Neil Philip: a giant compendium of folktales from England, collected in the 19th century (the book is the compendium of them) and related in that form. Recommended to people who want to read some stories ("Lazy Jack" is my favourite).

Also, I should note that many of them, particularly my favourite, Cloven Country, were discovered through my local library. Support your local libraries, people.

ITEM HISTORY: PhaseTracker is an app by TherianInc that was released in 2011.

Traditionally, communities of lycanthropes and other therianthropes have had a broad range of methods used to safely track transformations - especially in the modern era, where secrecy regulations are paramount. While these devices are still in use, many young lycanthropes choose instead to use PhaseTracker on “magebroken” smartphones.

The use of PhaseTracker is very widespread, allowing lycanthropic communities to track and share data about transformation probabilities. A family of PhaseTracker using individuals can then more easily plan safe “change days.” PT also comes with an emergency function - in the case of an unexpected change, a user can quickly summon either local community help or more official support such as the Office Metamorphic Support team or local Howl Together chapters.

Because of the app’s detailed moon tracking capability, PhaseTracker has found use in the witch and Yellow Circle communities, both of whose magic relies partially on the movements of heavenly bodies. the anon who sent the biopic ask here. afsfdfhhjkk I did in fact sent it to get you to talk about the movie version of sete/vale rivalry! I am also the sete anon after all.

the vale selling his would to curse sete stuff had me screaming bc you see…….a while ago there was this gif set going around where 2020 or 2021 valentino’s leathers are unzipped and you could see how concave his chest is. and my first thought upon seeing it was “haha it’s actually concave bc valentino made a deal w the demon and gave him his heart in order to become the god of motogp, and also to curse sete:)))”

love the casey stuff, I think if we get the minds that worked on revolutionary girl utena in on this they could make it work. mainly bc rgu had really great visuals, lots of surrealist stuff and all that while having a pretty low budget. (yes rgu is also very complex and deals with stuff like csa, escaping the cycles of abuse etc but we’re not getting into that.) so, in some far far away alternative universe that studio makes a casey stoner inspired animated film (with huge budged) and it a cult classic. alternatively, satoshi kon could have also worked some magic w that set up I know. lots of great imagery there.

dovi biopic could actually work, if we use his story to make into a movie about the man vs corporate machine, how futile that struggle is, disillusionment and ultimately choosing to walk away. so, actually it won’t be a dovi biopic in the sense most ppl think of what biopics are? it would end up more grim than general audiences realize bc the movie will show that in the end ducati succeeded and have won world titles etc and dovi was a cog in that machine, and had his imput being downplayed etc. but also like dovi has his family, his inner circle, his self of self to fall back onto and the audience is obviously ends up on his side so it’s not downright depressing. (I wrote this w a specific director in mind even afdgghjk)

w dani&jorge………ok I’m gonna sound insane for this but. we need to maybe fully fictionalize this. have original characters, who are totally not heavily inspired by jorge&dani *wink wink*. get pedro almodovar to direct or something. this movie is now about jorge-inspired-character dealing with his closeted homosexuality, his fraught relationship w his father….like I am in no way trying to suggest that real life jorge lorenzo might be gay here! but his story does land itself to these themes if you think about it. the rivalry is underlined by homoerotic tension the two characters cannot acknowledge (even to themselves) within the setting of competitive motorcycle racing. buttt after their retirement? they discover that there’s a life outside of it all and maybe mayyybe the movie implies they could get together or something.

also love the sepang 2015 movie framing but yeah it would be considered the worst racing movie of all time, like 5.4 out of 10 on imdb, tge director wouldn’t be able to make another feature film for another 10 years after that. but good news it gets some reappraisal and a small but dedicated cult following like 15 to 20 years later.

(follow up to this post) omg pls I love long asks, I'm gonna not take this in order because I NEED to skip to the casey/valentino rgu vision because?? yes? casey is like... such a magical girl... (magical girl transformation into leathers, is this anything) the rose imagery!! I want to rose imagery casey!! obviously again yes the thematic overlap between these two things is only,, loose at best, we are very much ignoring many of the things utena is actually About,, but. disparity between idealised roles and how those roles actually function, having those images interrogated/torn down... growing up!! casey realising his parents' dream was imposed on him rather than chosen... even just kind of. the aesthetic make up of utena, the core components of how it actually tells its story. the focus on duels and being challenged... formalised process of DEMANDING to fight the current 'champion'... the shadow plays...

this to me is casey and valentino

anyway if u squint it is like. kind of the same energy as paddock gossip. the skits are also.... yeah hm. hm

moving away a bit from utena and its very specific themes, I think what you really can also do with this vision is like... play up the culture clash vibes for casey? I've been meaning to make the post on this forever, but there's a specific theme that comes through in a lot of the stuff casey's said and written over the years that's really concerned with... well, the trip from australia to europe, the hardship associated at various stages with that, never quite feeling at home in this new environment, zero paddock friends, never learning italian and being sick with the concept of italy by the end of his ducati tenure, saying that europeans weren't as straight talking and honest as the anglos (valentino did also help turn him off the concept of the british, mind you), saying the europeans were more partisan, bad sports fans, really kinda... wrestling with a lot of his loneliness and feelings of isolation by attributing a lot of this stuff to this different european mindset. where some of his competitors were nasty in part because that's what they're all like in big bad europe. and idk, that's something that you can really dig into with these abstractions, when you're isolating casey and then making him accept this Challenge of facing the god - through motorcycle racing but also through ritualistic sacrifice - and eventually he takes on this task that he's supposed to, that's supposed to be his duty, but for some reason everyone still hates him for it... and you play up how it's not necessarily his individual agency that even brought him there. he's there to win, and yet they hate him for winning. everyone wants competition, nobody likes the competition when it's actually there

also like. sleeping beauty him. pricked by the thorn of a rose and he's taken out of competition and has to recover and everyone criticises him for 'just' having his finger pricked with the tiniest drop of blood. idk a lot of his quite specific baggage and struggles are really made for abstraction. he's also got this... look. just a very specific vibe that I think you can magical girl-ify. vibrant red, a little bit delicate, as the shadows creep in on him

where it's kinda... he's unique, he's special, he's got All That Talent that allows him to take on a task nobody else has managed... but that's also part of what isolates him, that x factor of his raw natural ability that allows him to make it at the top of the sport In Spite Of All The Odds but also means he CAN'T get a quiet peaceful existence

and the rivalry with valentino, which, first of all they both make for great animated characters because they're incredibly distinctive (I would make utena!valentino so very very tall), but also that slight... element of menace. valentino constantly in the spotlight, and the brighter casey shines the more he's in danger - even if he rather wouldn't be the centre of attention. he still is.... even if he shies away from it, the world is still watching. valentino is still watching. and the gaze itself has consequences

literal glare of the camera lens, exposing casey in a way that makes him uncomfortable. unnerving and too bright and trapping him

casey looking at valentino and the changes in what he sees over time. the gradual adjustment of perception when he comes to learn of a different version of valentino (who is in turn still separate from Valentino The Person)

and that kind of animation style for the motorcycles and everything... thinking about specifically casey's phillip island 2009 which is his very first race win after his illness-induced absence and I've never personally been THAT big on white liveries (he still loves it though) but like. symbolism-inspired colour change for key step back into the fray, to a new moment of hope

his leathers also have like. a very specific vibe here. as do his interactions with valentino. the specific way they grasp hands idk I've got a vision

(they do also hug pretty warmly in parc fermé and there's a bit more to this race given it was a massive W for valentino as far as his title bid was concerned but he'd also been informed of a personal tragedy the day before - but we're gonna ignore all that here)

also OBVIOUSLY

the assen 2007 fight was SUPPOSED to be animated

it also lets you dig into kinda likeeee the weird elements of that rivalry where it switches from being a primarily on-track one to being a completely off-track one. like idk it feels you can play with that switch of them being real duels to just being. casey stabbing him while valentino taunts him. this disconnect where casey is now on top of the world in all the Actual Motorcycle Racing but the whole picture isn't quite as simple as that.... the ways in which casey can't entirely win....

other random fun bits of imagery/vibes:

again, you can have random animals running around in animation... tortoise turtle and the hare laguna '08 I will keep saying it

speaking of laguna '08, the most memorable move happens at the corkscrew... I think you can do something with concept of a corkscrew

laguna '08 overall is just a top ten anime battle isn't it, the fact that the whole thing depends on this. reversal. where rather than valentino always stalking his victims (inherently evocative) but is committing to obstructing casey from ahead (btw today's their anniversary!!! <3)

you have GOT to do something funky with pressers, like casey's relationship to the media is so fundamental to his entire story... essentially treat it as another form of combat imo. like give it the exact same visual lead in as the actual on-track battles, so that you have this collapse between the on-track and off-track

collapse between the identity of the rider and the bike. common thing anyway in the weird way these blokes talk about their bikes, obviously valentino is like. a number one offender for this. and obviously you can easily exploit this in animation!! and also if we're sticking with the yellow = infection stuff, then casey is constantly being at risk of overwhelmed by the yellow.... and once he's stepped away from that bike to go to honda instead, he has to see this thing that's separate from him but still somehow a part of him be infected

playing with how casey was inspired by valentino... you know the utena kinda. prologue of utena being inspired to become a prince... basically that vibe. stepping up to become a deity and being presented the blade to challenge a god. But Was That Really Such A Good Idea

you can do something with chequered flags I reckon. idk what but you do something with them

casey's obsessed with fishing. a symbol of childhood innocence and one of the things he would have loved to do when he was essentially being forced into making motorcycle racing his dream, something that caused controversy back in 2009 because he got backlash for going fishing during his injury absence (yeah I don't know what they were on back then too) and something he references when he retires on his pitboard 'going fishing'. it's innocence, it's his individual dream, it's peace away from the track... you can work with that

obviously valentino himself makes all this symbolism shit very easy given he did canonically give himself an eyeball helmet during one of his ducati races. like we get it buddy. that would SLAP in animation

okay I just need to say it. you know how in catalunya 2009 casey is just like. two seconds away from fainting on the podium and valentino/jorge are having their whole intense thing going on and are just. ignoring it. gets me every time, it's just such a bizarre discrepancy of vibes. like two different narratives are going on during that podium and they're just pretending like the other one isn't happening, except in casey's case that's extremely understandable and in the others' case?? idk I'd check on him?? power of animation I'm having casey literally faint and everyone ignoring it. maybe several times. sorry casey this is social critique on your behalf

if you have an equivalent utena walking up the stairs pre-race build up, it is so important to me to remember that casey crashed during the valencia 2009 warm up lap

something something valentino catalunya 2008 special italian football team leathers something casey's issues towards italy something them actually having a duel in that race while casey is just about trying to wrestle his italian manufacturer into making themselves useful for once... this is the first... second? turning point of the season. okay look there's several turning points. but crucially that's one of the big ones, when casey is starting to get the ducati situation sorted and they have a post-race test at catalunya and then casey goes on his little win streak that leads you to laguna. I think you can do something with the concept of italy here

thinking of the utena stopwatch thing and how casey's mum was always making the notes for casey's races as a kid and they're included in his autobiography... like you've got this little kid with essentially performance reviews... idk something about constantly recording what he's doing. I can SEE that scene of animated kid!casey going around the dirt track while his mother is recording his progress with a stopwatch and notebook in my mind...

I still get like. nebulously sad about his 2020 where it's both kinda I get how this fell apart but it's so unsatisfying? which is the fun of it! narratively speaking. and the fact that he was such a big influence on the development of that bike, how possessive he got over that project and really saw it as his, how he ended up being unceremoniously dumped and he's seen them win again and again... again he does have the whole 'being well adjusted' thing working against him BUT idk there's a satisfying suitably cinematic story in there somewhere

and yeah I do see the jorge/dani vision!! I think that one's the one where I'm like. the least attached to the literal details and am quite happy to fictionalise it!! especially because lbr his path to his first title just Does Not Work narratively. like 2010 only works as a good conclusion of that arc if valentino is actually THERE to be defeated, or if jorge and dani actually have more of a title fight. and he does have an extremely queer-coded narrative!! you kinda have the actual family right, then the way he kinda... cycles through a few versions of what are essentially all found families, like he's got the whole manager situation which obviously in itself ends up a nightmare, then the coach turned manager he also split from then ?? it's kinda... that dimension of athletes where they're CHOOSING the people close to them (not that he's fully in a position to make a lot of these choices!!) and then has to cut ties when he becomes more aware of how those people are attempting to exploit him.... the whole number switching thing is explicitly framed as a form of liberation. his tendency to get Obsessed and a little Weird about all his major rivals (dani, valentino and dovi get the worst of this) like it's just a fun vibe to play with... the way the rivalry with dani is also a little Imposed from Above and also jorge doesn't get why dani keeps him at such a distance and is constantly trying to like. bug him into paying attention to jorge. he just makes for such a good coming of age story protagonist, like he's so vibrant and awkward and cocky and kind of ridiculous,,, prone to way too intense introspection and just overthinking EVERYTHING and he's trying to play a character while also wanting to find his authentic self or whatever... he's just such a Young Guy and his story with dani is full of that energy... yes

valentino!!!! cuts!!!! his heart out!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE THAT omg.... I love the idea that he'd just. be motivated to destroy sete enough that he's willing to take the final step.... the one that ensures his rule over the sport will never be challenged in any meaningful way but he also cannot return from, a line that he can't un-cross.... AND y'know I've banged on enough about this idea that valentino really DID change his approach to his rivals after that, acquired a bit of distance which would be!! fantastic, it's also that element of not just him Losing something but also him not wanting to go through those kinds of complicated emotions at the hands of someone who had been a friend again... removes his heart!! exorcises his softness!!

I kinda love the idea of making it... the natural conclusion of where that particular journey was taking him. like the idea that that's kinda always where he was headed... it's why I think the sachsenring/brno 2003 thing is so neat, like the fact brno is the site of both the big comeback win against sete but ALSO where he agreed to ride for yamaha in the middle of the night. that you're drawing the line between 'he wanted to be his own man' (seemingly a harmless motive, even admirable) with what 'being his own man' involves, aka psychologically torturing his rivals (possibly a little questionable). another thing I adore here is his phillip island 2004 celebrations when he seals the title..... what a spectacle!!!! in retrospect it's just kinda,, oh look what a fun celebration! he's having fun!! it's all a show!! because sete has been erased from that celebration. and that race is the culmination of BOTH those arcs set in motion at brno 2003, it's his great yamaha victory while also being deeply cruel... and before that the sepang celebrations... I just like the idea that what people tend to see as Good valentino traits (joyous, fun celebrations) and Bad valentino traits (working to destroy his rivals) are fundamentally impossible to detach from each other, and the only way you get rid of them both is by suppressing who he is as a person... now I'm not saying that the devil tempted him to join yamaha but I'm not not saying that? works with the ibiza trip between sachsenring and brno too, like you can parallel that to sete contemplating honda the previous year (this did Not canonically happen but narrative efficiency). it's all their choice!! but they were also Twisted By Circumstances.... valentino's corruption arc why does nobody see this is valentino's corruption arc....

I am curious about them… sorry if it’s been asked already but when were rose/aspen first created? do you have any old(ish) art of them like concept art… i am interested in the process !

i've talked about this briefly but not lately or in depth so i'll go over the whole timeline! rose was created before aspen, and he was originally a zangoose (pokemon) made for an ask blog!

this was (basically) his first design! it's from late 2015 so i was 15 when i drew this. his name comes from a random zangoose gijinka i drew in my sketchbook and never used again but the idea behind his design was just to make a cute kitten zangoose because its called the cat ferret pokemon (even though its clearly supposed to be a mongoose?)

aspen was introduced in july 2016. he was originally a fletchling gijinka because i used to draw, like, every pokemon i had in my copy of pokemon x as a human. but for the blog he was given a regular pokemon design which was actually designed by someone else as part of a giveaway thing

this is my art from september 2017 ^ i ended up rebooting and then shutting down the ask blog due to personal reasons, but rose and aspen always stuck around in my mind. just as humans now

^ these are from 2017-18. first is a fantasy au where aspen is a werebird and rose has plant magic. 2nd one is normal but the story behind his leg being missing in both these is that was my plan for the ask blog but it seemed weird (TO ME AT THE TIME) for aspen and rose to both have amputated limbs so during this era aspen had both arms but one was partially paralyzed/he didnt have full use of it

(2018) this was also the sad era where their backstories were crazy depressing but i wont get into that

(2023) this ^ was post-"oh they are way too sad" realization and they get to be happy normal kids

(2023) redesigns + pokemon au for a full circle moment

(2023? or 24? im not sure) redesigns again. and also where i'll stop because this is getting long and any further updates would basically just be posting recent art which is already on their toyhouse profiles
