Who is the successor of Omnitraxus Prime in Corona’s MHC?
I haven't decided that yet. As of right now, I've chosen three members of the Magic High Commission to be reincarnated into characters that'll matter in the next generation. But only two of them will be their successors. The others being reincarnated will just be ordinary background characters. As for the people in their place, not sure yet.

2021 / 29
Aperçu of the Week:
"You can tell a person's character by the jokes he laughs at."
Alfred Biolek
Biolek is a veteran of German television. In the 1970s, he produced the most successful TV show, "Am laufenden Band," and then he was in front of the camera himself: first talking and hosting, later also cooking, in each case as the first (!) in his field. Thanks to him, people in this country know Monty Python and The Police, for example. A great man, a star without airs and graces, an innovator and cultural leader, a man who was never prejudiced, never unfair, always in a good mood, always interested, never superficial, always friendly, who stood by his homosexuality - at a time when it was still considered disreputable, not only in his industry. I had the privilege of meeting him almost 30 years ago, as we both shared a valuable experience as exchange students with AFS. Dr. Alfred Franz Maria Biolek died yesterday in Cologne at the age of 87. Rest in peace!
Bad News of the Week:
The fourth wave is coming. It's already there in the UK and Spain. In France and Italy, the values are still (reasonably) low, but the growth is rapid. Thanks to the delta mutant, formerly known as the Indian. Here, everyone is watching spellbound for the infamous "7-day incidence," which so far has been slow to increase. That's about to change. Especially because the longed-for herd immunity will remain a utopia - because immunization above 85% is impossible if all children and adolescents are not considered for vaccination. And more and more so-called skeptics refuse - whereby an obligation to vaccinate would be an immense encroachment on fundamental rights, the justification of which is difficult. But is there a fundamental right to ignorance? I'm torn apart...
What is currently taking place in the UK is a large-scale medical experiment. Not under expert supervision in a laboratory, but completely detached in public. All Corona protections such as mask wearing or social distancing have been completely removed. At a time when the incidence is approaching 500 - the highest since the all-time high in January. In our country, it's under 15, and we're worrying about how to organize the start of school after the summer vacations. And Boris Johnson basically says to that, "Why not now? When then?". Well, for example, when the vaccination campaign is more advanced and the numbers are lower. But he'll know what he's doing - even if it's irresponsible. Let's see how British voters will remember this decision in his upcoming re-election.
But this is not the only area where the British government lacks logic in Corona measures. A work colleague of mine is Irish and was supposed to visit his mother next week. But she lives in Northern Ireland. Since he already has full vaccination protection, he didn't expect any problems - and now he would have to spend ten days in a quarantine hotel without being allowed to see his mother. That's over 70% of his total two-week stay. The reasoning is remarkable: according to British regulations, he is considered unvaccinated because a vaccination in an EU country is not recognized. Although it is the same vaccine in the same dose in the same schedule. But the stamp in his vaccination certificate is just the wrong one.
Good News of the Week:
"Pragmatism and melancholy" is the Tagesschau's headline about Angela Merkel's last federal press conference - a kind of forum for free questions from journalists - as chancellor in Berlin. After all, she will not be running again in the federal elections in just under two months. It was therefore not surprising that, in addition to current political issues, many media representatives primarily took stock of Merkel's 16-year term in office. The financial and the euro crisis, nuclear and coal phase-out, the EU and China, Corona and digitization, and so on. Life without crises is easier, but when they are there, they have to be dealt with, Merkel replied to the question of whether she felt flattered by the title "crisis chancellor." After all, last week U.S. President Joe Biden, another old hand in world politics, had remarked that she would be missed.
In an interview today, climate activist Luisa Neubauer, the German face of "Fridays for Future," accuses Merkel of not tackling the climate crisis in the proactive manner that is her style in other crises. Although this one is by far the biggest and most urgent. One might add, even though Merkel was once environment minister. And seems to overlook two things: first, nuclear and coal phase-out ultimately serve climate protection. And secondly, there is no patent remedy, no reference, no example, no role model. Perhaps that's the point: who should be able to tackle the issue in a decisive way if not someone who is internationally acknowledged, respected across party lines, unpretentious and without any self-interest, scientifically sound, moderating and balancing, pragmatic and energetic? So who, if not Merkel?
Dr. Angela Dorothea Merkel turned 67 two weeks ago. Unlike Helmut Kohl - the other chancellor who ruled for what felt like an eternity of 16 years and ended up looking powerless and burnt out - it's hard to imagine Merkel going from one day to another just reading books and trying out potato salad recipes. And we have learned from the U.S. that the political zenith is apparently not reached until the age of 70+. And from demography we have learned that women live longer and are more efficient in old age than men. So: starting this fall, there will be an "elder stateswoman" in waiting on the world stage, who I personally would like to see again in every conceivable position. EU Council president, UN secretary general, pope, conductor, chef - I don't care. But give her something to do. She won't screw it up. Thank you, Mrs. Merkel, for providing a solid counterbalance to all the testosterone and alpha dog behavior in our nation, in Europe and a little bit in the whole world all these years. Of course, not all that glitters is gold, and even you haven't done everything right. But your taking stock is positive, and that's what remains at the end of the day.
Personal happy moment of the week:
I have never owned a purse. Probably because I never had enough money ;-) So coins always end up in a big box that the kids carry to the bank by the kilo on World Savings Day. And for bills, I had a plain money clip by Danish designer Georg Jensen, whose functional-style silversmithing helped shape industrial design in Scandinavian countries. I had already lost it once and after much research was able to purchase one again. A good half year ago I scatterbrained lost it again. Fuck the 20, 30 euros - but my beautiful clip was gone. And this time it was impossible to find another one. Yesterday, I put on a suit that I obviously hadn't worn for a long time - because in my pants pocket I found my money clip. Empty, but valuable. I got it back. And my personal happy moment of the week.
I couldn't care less...
...for the Olympic Games. Because they are so far from the original ideal of the sporting high office of the amateurs, endlessly commercialized, run by a corrupt organization, without any grounding and leaving the same too often burnt. I can still remember the promises made before the Summer Games in Beijing in 20008: sport would be an ambassador of peace and democratization, the Olympics would have a lasting effect on politics and society. Really? Nothing at all has happened. Except that the 2022 Winter Games will once again be held in Beijing. Bravo!
As I write this...
...it's thundering and lightning in the mountains again. And everybody is afraid that there will be heavy rain, squalls and hail again. Because the soils, especially in the disaster areas of the last week, are still waterlogged and loose and many dams no longer exist. So it only takes a comparatively small amount of rain to have mudslides, rivers overflowing their banks, and flooded homes again. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for all of us.

Vaccines, U.S. Reopenings, Flour Frenzy: Your Thursday Briefing
(Want to get this briefing by email? Here’s the sign-up.)
Good morning.
We’re covering progress toward a coronavirus vaccine on multiple fronts, a patchwork of reopenings in the U.S. and a run on flour in Britain.
More than 100 research teams around the world are taking aim at the virus. Companies like Inovio, Moderna and Pfizer have begun early tests in human subjects. Researchers at the University of Oxford in England, who are also testing vaccines in people, say they could have one ready for emergency use as soon as September.
So great is the urgency that researchers are combining trial phases and shortening a process that usually takes years, sometimes more than a decade. And they are using a range of techniques, some that are well established and some that have never been approved for medical use before.
Reopening, but on edge: Coronavirus infections have dropped sharply in Paris after a strict two-month lockdown and a growing contact tracing effort, health officials say. But the city’s reopening has been muted, in keeping with the national mood: fearful of what lies ahead and angry at the government.
Fifty U.S. states reopening, 50 approaches
The U.S. has crossed an uneasy threshold, with all 50 states beginning to reopen two months after the coronavirus thrust the country into lockdown. But there are vast variations in how states are opening up, with some forging far ahead of others.
Many states began to reopen despite not meeting White House guidelines for progress against the virus, and newly reported cases have been increasing in some states that are moving to lift lockdown measures.
In the long term: Federal Reserve officials worried that coronavirus-related lockdowns could spur bankruptcies and longer-term unemployment, potentially inflicting lasting damage on the economy, minutes from their late-April meeting showed.
If you have 5 minutes, this is worth it
Britain is in a baking frenzy
A family-owned flour mill in Oxford has been operating 24/7 for the first time in its 125-year history to provide enough of one of the country’s hottest commodities. “Demand remains consistently obscene,” one of the owners said. Above, an employee of the Wessex Mill moving bags of flour.
The U.K. is not alone: In France, demand doubled in March. In Italy, it reached its highest level since World War II.
Here’s what else is happening
Cyclone Amphan: A dreaded storm tore through eastern India and Bangladesh, killing at least several people but apparently causing less devastation than initially feared. The combination of an enormous evacuation effort and the storm weakening over land seemed to have spared many lives.
Group of 7: President Trump said he might try to host the annual G7 summit at Camp David as was planned before the pandemic, saying it would be a sign of “normalization.” No world leaders immediately rejected the idea. A virtual meeting is scheduled for June 10-12.
China: President Xi Jinping is using the country’s success — and the criticism against it — to urge the party and the people to weather tough days ahead.
The Globe: Shakespeare’s theater warned that it was in danger of permanently closing if it did not receive emergency funding from the government to make up for lost revenue.
What we’re listening to: The podcast “Wind of Change,” which explores a rumor that the 1990 ballad in the title, by the German band Scorpions, was written by the C.I.A. to exert influence behind the Iron Curtain. Mike Wolgelenter, one of our editors in London, writes, “What’s not to love about a heavy metal-tinged deep dive into Cold War espionage?”
Now, a break from the news
Cook: A comforting one-pan tuna casserole is just what we need right now. It has creamy white beans and a crunchy potato chip topping.
And now for the Back Story on …
Coronavirus rejiggers Germany’s politics
Germany’s measures for containment and careful reopening have been viewed as a model of a science-led approach. Melina Delkic talked to Katrin Bennhold, our Berlin bureau chief, about how the coronavirus crisis has shifted the political landscape in Germany, with the far right sidelined.
Something seems to have shifted for the far-right AfD, or Alternative for Germany, party during this pandemic. Its approval rating has been down in some national polls. Can you explain?
The pandemic has marginalized the party. In February, the fallout from an inconclusive election in a small eastern state showed what a potent and disruptive force the AfD had become. It ultimately brought down Angela Merkel’s anointed successor. But when the pandemic hit, everything changed. Its narrative didn’t cut through anymore.
It struggled for three reasons: First, Merkel rose to the occasion. Her government basically managed to avoid the disaster that was unfolding in neighboring countries. Her approval rating surged — and this was a chancellor whose party had been tanking. So it became hard to attack her when about 80 percent of public opinion was behind her.
Second, AfD’s signature issues — especially migration — were no longer salient.
Third, the government was doing a lot of the things in the context of this health crisis that the AfD had been arguing for. Suddenly Merkel was closing borders — she became emblematic of a strong nation-state.
Will that last?
The reopening has given AfD a chance to step back into the national conversation. The party is trying to turn Merkel’s measures around and say, “Look, it’s possible to close the borders, and the nation-state is actually the relevant entity, not Europe, not the world.” It is trying to co-opt some of the corona protests that are currently playing out on the streets of Germany.
The ultimate test will be the country’s mood after the economic crisis that has only just begun. The far right is banking on a meltdown, and the government is throwing money at this. For example, a short-term work program allows employers to cut employee hours while the government makes up some of the difference.
What does Germany’s reopening actually look like, and why did the containment work so well?
Success in this pandemic is basically a combination of some things that were already in place, like a robust health care system, and then a science-led approach. Merkel consulted very early with scientists, got testing off the ground and then coordinated with state governors. There was a sense of unity.
The reopening is happening in phases, and Merkel handed it back to the states this month. First it was shops and some schools. Restaurants opened last week in Berlin, where I live. It felt like a big moment.

Why is Corona calls the Lost Councillor?
Back when Toffee was putting together the rebellion against Queen Comet, he fought a mysterious girl wielding Lekmet's staff. He doesn't know where she disappeared to after that, but he does know two things for sure:
1. She's connected to the Supreme High Chancellor
2. She shares Toffee's last name

Dialogue Practice #33
Corona (running): So that was Toffee as a teenager? Yikes!
Glossaryck: Oh no. That's a full grown man right there.
Corona: You're kidding.
Glossaryck: Nope. Toffee had a lot of ...issues in his youth. And this was a very unstable period of his life. One where he'd beat a Mewman senseless just for staring at him wrong.
Corona: Why the HECK would you send to me to speak to Toffee in a time period where he's willing to kill me on sight?!
Glossaryck: Because putting up with him takes a lot of patience and initiative, something you are sorely lacking. I figured this wacky, chaotic season of life is the best place for you to start coaxing him.
Corona: But why him? Why do my lessons have to start with Toffee?
Glossaryck: Because you'll need him for your New Commission...and he's going to be the hardest to convince.
Corona: ...
Glossaryck: The fact is, what you two have in common is that you're going to be in a position of power very soon. A position that demands patience, virtue, and understanding. But most importantly communication. And since you refuse to speak to literally anybody but me, you need to learn to communicate in different ways.
Corona (still running): And that was my lesson for today?
Glossaryck: Mm hm. And you seem to be falling miserably.
Corona: Don't you mean "failing"?
Glossaryck: Ha ha ha!
Glossaryck: NO.
Corona: (gets tripped by a sneaky Toffee)

I've given it some careful thought, and I've decided to change the timeline and place the St. Olga's episode before the events of Fortune Cookies. I figure Toffee's already keeping tabs on Star and Marco at this point, and he's maintaining a business casual friendship with Miss Heinous, so naturally he'd visit the school every once in awhile. So he would be aware of the uprising Marco causes, prompting Toffee to wonder two things:
1. If Marco really does pose as a girl sometimes, is it possible he is the person that becomes Corona Cross?
2. How is Star traveling between dimensions if she's supposedly kept safe on Earth with no scissors of her own?
So Toffee would go back to Crossover Corp. and look through the receipts to see if Star commissioned any custom scissors from him to be delivered to Earth. No, but apparently a different false royal heir did: ex-prince Ludo Avarius, for the purpose of "trying to steal a wand from a teenager". Apparently Ludo has been taking Monsters in off the streets and hiring them as extra muscle in return for clothes and a roof over their head.
A perfect opportunity for Toffee to find a band of impressionable Monsters who feel mistreated by society and are brave enough to stand up to a magical princess and her all-powerful wand, all while keeping even closer tabs on the girl who's going to give him the words to the Whispering Spell and the boy who might become or be related to his time-traveling adversary Corona. Two birds, one stone, wouldn't you say?

I've made my decision!
As we know, magic put everything back where it belonged. Mewmans and humans are back together again, the commission is gone, the Royal family is where they belong, and all the dimensions that never should've been together are separated. So, what about Festivia, who was taken from her family and never meant to be queen in the first place? I'm putting her back where she belongs.
In my AU's epilogue, Toffee and Juno are gonna spend some time together, mending their broken hearts and slow-burning their relationship like they always wanted to. And once they've done that, Festivia will be reborn, this time as Toffee's true biological daughter.
See this right here?

I drew this for a competition last year. And I'll be damned if I'm not gonna see it come into fruition!!!
