This question is kinda tangential I guess - you mentioned in chapter 4's end notes that Cassandra Kiramman is implied to be from Ionia and I'm super curious about that!! Idk much about League lore outside of Arcane (I've tried diving in but good lird there's a lot) so I've no idea if this is smth that Arcane itself implies or if it's older League lore. Like I vaguely know that Caitlyn always had a mother that died as part of her lore, but idk if there was more to it than that.

I've also seen people say that the girl Ambessa beheaded in the flashback from s1e8 was Ionian, but I've got no clue how true that is. (She also had the same green eyes as Mel - albeit without the central gold ring - which I figure implies that wherever she's from, Mel's father is from there too).

Anyway this got away from me a bit lol, basically I want to know more about how Cassandra is from Ionia!!

Take this with a handful of sand because I'm no expert on League lore AT ALL and I'm also not the kind of viewer who's smart enough to analyze every frame of Arcane and draw conclusions.

I think there were some musings from the very beginning about Caitlyn's family having ties to Ionia since she (and specially her father) seem to be of Asian descent and Ionia is basically a region more influenced/heavily inspired by Asian culture and aesthetic. That is kinda flimsy (Marcus is Asian too and I mean I guess he could also be from Ionia but it's obvious that Runeterra is supposed to be diverse overall) BUT the art I saw people dissect regarding this was this one:

These portraits seem to depict Cassandra at different points in her life and where 2 and 3 are obviously Piltover (you see the bridge between Zaun and Piltover in the second, the backdrop is from an industrialized city, yadda yadda and 3 is obviously Cassandra in the present), the first one is this:

This is certainly not Piltover. Even the frame looks different, and it looks VERY Ionian. I've seen some people say that might not be Cassandra (she does look white in present day), but considering the framing I'd be very surprised if that was not Cassandra (and if she was Cait's grandma the point remains.) So this is it I have no more proof!!! But considering that Fortiche does not play with details like this, I thought it would be fun to relate this theory to the fic in some way! Regarding the Ionian princess, I think there was some art that the designer shared, and they titled her character model 'Ionian Princess', but I've checked now and it's either been edited or it was a confusion in the first place. So

No way to know now, but it would be interesting considering Noxus in present League lore is actively invading Ionia, leaving the region which is very decentralized to wonder how they will handle the attack. Mel's father might be Ionian and that could be so much fun!!! Lots of arcane-powered people in the region. Hope I could answer some of your doubts! As I said, no expert, just a fan trying to make my blorbo story work! And thank you so much, so glad you liked the fic!!!!

The leatherback sea turtle, the largest of all turtle species, is a creature both fascinating and formidable. With its massive size, reaching up to eight feet in length and weighing as much as 2,000 pounds, it commands attention in the oceanic world. But what truly sets the leatherback apart is not just its size, but its unique anatomy.

Unlike other turtles, the leatherback lacks a hard shell. Instead, its back is covered by a thick, leathery skin, giving the species its name. This adaptation allows it to dive to incredible depths, sometimes over 4,000 feet, in search of its jellyfish prey.

Perhaps the most eerie feature of the leatherback is its mouth, which looks like something out of a science fiction movie. Inside, instead of teeth, it has dozens of papillae—spiny, backward-facing projections that line its mouth, esophagus, and gut. These "demonic" structures serve a crucial purpose: they help the leatherback grip and swallow its slippery prey, ensuring that once a jellyfish is caught, it cannot escape.

Welcome to a topsy-turvy Wet Beast Wednesday where I'm discussing one of my favorite cnidarians, the upside-down jellyfish. These are 8 species of jellyfish in the genus Cassiopea, which is the only member of the family Cassiopeidae. What makes these jellies notable is the fact that they spend most of their time lying upside-down on the seafloor.

While the majority of jellyfish are predators who drift through the water at the mercy of the currents, upside-down jellyfish have essentially become farmers. Their eight branched oral arms that contain symbiotic algae called zooxanthellae. These algae are photosynthetic and live in a mutualistic relationship with the jellyfish. The jellyfish gets food from the zooxanthellae and they get protection from predators and a place to live. Upside-down jellyfish can survive entirely on the nutrients produced by the zooxanthellae, but they will still feed on zooplankton and other small prey. Upside-down jellies are not the only jellyfish to utilize zooxanthellae, many other species also survive primarily on their symbiotic algae, but they are the only ones to have adapted the benthic lifestyle. They can reach a bell diameter of up to 25 cm (10 inches), or as one source for this stated: about the size of a pie pan.

Upside-down jellyfish are found in warm coastal waters in Florida and the Caribbean and in Micronesia, Melanesia, and parts of Polynesia. They require shallow waters to allow enough light to reach their zooxanthellae and are usually found on shady or muddy bottoms. They are highly associated with mangroves and may play an important role in the mangrove habitats by mixing the water to recirculate oxygen and nutrients. They are rarely found alone, instead congregating in large groups that can cover portions of the seafloor. They attach by using their bells as suction cups and rhythmically pulse using the edges of the bell. This pulsing forces water over the gills and can force zooplankton into the stinging cells to become food. Stung prey will fall on the oral tentacles, where it is broken down into fragments that are then intaken through the numerous tiny oral openings on the tentacles. Interestingly, some species have cycles of reduced movement, which is believed to be the first known example of sleep in an animal without a central nervous system. While upside-down jellies can swim, they will usually only do so to escape predators or if their environment becomes unsuitable.

While a very neat thing to see underwater, many snorkelers avoid upside-down jellyfish due to a phenomenon called stinging water. This is when people will receive the symptoms of a sting by the jellyfish without actually touching it. While the cause of this was a mystery for a long time, it was solved when a 2020 paper was published in Communications Biology by Ames et al. The scientists discovered that upside-down jellies release clumps of mucus into the water. This mucus is filled with zooxanthellae and stinging cells and many of these clumps also have ciliated cells that allow for limited swimming. These clumps, named cassiosomes, are the source of the stinging water. The paper, titled "cassiosomes are stinging-cell structures in the mucus of the upside-down jellyfish Cassiopea xamachana" speculated that the cassiosomes are used for defense and feeding. The cassiosomes could be released to sting a potential predator from a distance, discouraging it from approaching the jellyfish. Presumably snorkelers trigger this defense when they swim over the jellies, resulting in stinging water. They could also be used to catch prey as zooplankton killed by the stinging cells would have a high likelihood of falling onto the jelly that released them. Because the cassiosomes have zooanthellae in them, they could survive for likely up to several days after release.

Upside-down jellyfish are threatened by habitat loss as many mangrove forests are torn down for development. They are also threatened by pollution. They are not considered dangerous to humans. The sting of an upside-down jellyfish can result in mild to severe rashes and itching, but is not lethal.

Round 2.5 - Cnidaria - Scyphozoa

Scyphozoa is a marine class of cnidarians commonly referred to as “true jellyfish”, “jellyfish”, or simply “jellies”. They are composed of three living orders: Coronatae (“Crown Jellies”), Rhizostomeae (“Root-mouth Jellies”), Semaeostomeae (“Flag-mouth Jellies”).

Scyphozoans usually display a four-part symmetry and have an internal gelatinous material called mesoglea, consisting of as much as 98% water. A ring of muscle fibres within the mesoglea surrounds the rim of the dome, and the jellyfish swims by alternately contracting and relaxing these muscles. As medusae, they eat a variety of crustaceans and fish, which they capture using stinging cells called nematocysts. The nematocysts are located throughout the tentacles that radiate downward from the edge of the umbrella dome, and also cover the four or eight oral arms that hang down from the central mouth. Some species, however, are instead filter feeders, using their tentacles to strain plankton from the water. The mouth opens into a central stomach, from which four interconnected diverticula radiate outwards. Some genera also have smaller mouths in the oral arms. The lining of the digestive system includes further stinging nematocysts, along with cells that secrete digestive enzymes. The nervous system usually consists of a distributed net of cells, although some species possess more organised nerve rings. Some species also have pigment-cup ocelli, though they are not as advanced as Cubozoan eyes. Coronataens (ex: image 2) are characterized by a deep groove running around the umbrella, giving them the crown shape which gives them their name. Rhizostomeans (ex: image 1 and 3) do not have tentacles nor other structures branching off from the edges of the bell. Instead, they have eight highly branched oral arms which fuse together as they approach the central mouth of the jellyfish. Semaeostomeaens (ex: image 4 and gif below) have four long, frilly oral arms flanking their quadrate mouths, as well as tentacles.

Most species of Scyphozoa have two life-history phases, including the planktonic medusa or polyp form, and the inconspicuous, but longer-lived, bottom-dwelling polyp, which seasonally gives rise to new medusae. Most species appear to be gonochorists, with separate male and female individuals. The gonads are located in the stomach lining, and the mature gametes are expelled through the mouth. After fertilization, some species brood their young in pouches on the oral arms, but they are more commonly planktonic. The fertilized egg produces a planular larva which, in most species, quickly attaches itself to the sea bottom. The larva develops into the hydroid stage of the lifecycle, a tiny sessile polyp called a scyphistoma. The scyphistoma reproduces asexually, producing similar polyps by budding, and then either transforming into a medusa, or budding several medusae off from its upper surface via a process called strobilation. The medusae are initially microscopic and may take years to reach sexual maturity.

Scyphozoans have existed since the Early Cambrian.

The Lion’s Mane Jelly (Cyanea capillata) is one of the largest jellyfish, with the largest recorded specimen having a bell width of 210 cm (7 ft) and tentacles around 36.6 m (120 ft) long.

Jellyfish of the order Rhizostomeae are considered edible, both as a delicacy and for use in traditional medicine, and are eaten mainly in Asia, typically dried and/or salted.

The giant Nomura's Jellyfish (Nemopilema nomurai) can reach similar sizes to the Lion’s Mane Jellyfish, and their large size and quantity often negatively affects fisheries in East Asia. Aside from humans, their only predators are swordfish, tuna, sunfish, and leatherback sea turtles. A decrease in predators and an increase in favorable conditions and warming seas have caused an explosion in population, displaying that an increase in animal populations is not always a good sign! Scientists are studying their venom for use in medical applications, such as for treating joint disease and in cancer research. The Japanese company Tango Jersey Dairy also produces a vanilla and jellyfish ice cream using Nomura's Jellyfish.

While most jellies are exclusively marine, the Bay Nettle (Chrysaora chesapeakei) ventures into the Chesapeake Bay’s brackish water all the way up into the freshwater of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

The Giant Phantom Jelly (Stygiomedusa gigantea) is a deep sea jellyfish that is rarely seen, with only around 110 sightings in 110 years. It thought to be one of the largest invertebrate predators of the ocean's midnight zone and twilight zone, with an umbrella-shaped bell that can grow up to 1 m (3.3 ft) in diameter and paddle-like arms that can grow up to 10 m (33 ft) in length. The bell's pliant tissue allows for the jellyfish to stretch 4 to 5 times its size, presumably to engulf their prey. They do not have any stinging tentacles and instead use their arms to trap and engulf their prey which consists of plankton and small fish. The Giant Phantom Jelly has a symbiotic relationship with the Pelagic Brotula (Thalassobathia pelagica), for which it provides food and shelter beneath its massive billowing bell, while the fish aids the jelly by removing parasites.

The Mauve Stinger (Pelagia noctiluca) is a fairly small purple jellyfish that is able to glow in the dark (bioluminesce). Light is emitted in the form of flashes when the medusa is stimulated by turbulence created by waves or by a ship's motion. Unusually among cnidarians, Mauve Stingers are able to consume phytoplankton, alongside copepods and other usual planktonic fare.

The Moon Jelly (Aurelia aurita) (see gif above) is gaining popularity in aquarium touchtanks as they lack long tentacles and their sting has little to no affect on humans. They are also one of the longer-lived jellyfish, living up to two years in their medusa form, and are easy to rear and feed, making them a good candidate for giving humans an up-close learning experience with jellies.

Fun fact: my dad let me watch The Sphere (1998) when I was 7 and it gave me Scyphophobia, a fear of jellyfish, that lasted for several years. I knew the behavior of the jellyfish as depicted in the movie wasn’t real, but I still wouldn’t enter the ocean for the next 5 years, and when I did start entering the ocean again every time I saw a jellyfish I would get out and not go back in again for another full year. It took a touch tank and several positive experiences with some moon jellies to get over my fear, and now I would say I’m fully recovered!

Spill Your Guts: Harry Styles & YN Tomlinson

Our Story Masterlist Summary: Harry challenges YN to a game of Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts.

Harry was asked to step in for the week to host The Late Late Show, as James was off filming for a movie, and of course, he said yes. During the meetings with the production team about what Harry could do during the show that week, Ben Winston suggested a game of Spill Your Guts and asked Harry if YN would join him. YN was unsure when Harry first asked but after Harry reassuring that he would be doing it with her and wouldn’t let her answer anything that made her feel uneasy, she agreed.

“How are you feeling about this?” Harry asked YN as they sat opposite eachother, with a round table in between them.

��I don’t know..I can’t believe I agreed to do this” YN said as she looked at all the disgusting foods that are lined up on the table.

“This is our first time doing this…right?” Harry questioned “And the last time we will do it” which caused YN and the audience sitting in the studio to laugh.

“Let’s take a look at the food we have on the table” Harry spoke towards the camera filming them both. “We have bug trifle..yeah ugh..jellyfish..yeah ugh…giant water scorpion.

“That’s got to be the worst one” YN interrupted with a sour look coating her face.

“Thousand-year-old eggnog” Harry continued listing “Cow blood and pork tongue jelly…cod sperm” Harry spoke in a high-pitched tone and looked at the camera once again, which made the audience roar with laughter. “Seems rather tame in comparison to the other ones”, YN and Harry laughed as he looked back at her. “How do they..get the sperm out of the cod?” Harry questioned the crew member to the side of them.  “It’s probably best we don’t know.” YN spoke, not wanting to know the information.

Moving on from the sperm cod “Salmon smoothie..aaaand bull penis”. “Good ol’ bull penis” YN interrupted l, which made Harry raise his eyebrows at her and YN leaves out a chuckle. “Okaay…I’ll ask the first question..and uhh…the producers have not shown us the questions correct?” Harry looked directly at YN whilst he was talking.

“Yes!” YN answered with an infectious grin.  

“Uhh..I’ll choose what food you have to eat if you don’t want to answer the question” Harry explained.

“Okay” and a nervous giggle left YN’s lips.

“So we’ll start with..ugh..” Harry spoke as he looked at all the options in front of him “Thousand-year-old eggnog”.

“Noooo” YN complained as Harry spun the table so the eggnog was in front YN. She sarcastically asked “Is this cinnamon supposed to make this any better?” causing the audience to chuckle.

“Give it a sniff” Harry instructed.

“Why?” YN laughed but proceeded to pick up the glass and sniff it which made her gag and cover her mouth with her hand “Oh my god!..That’s disgusting”.

“Okay..you ready?” Harry asked as he reached for the cards to the side of him, that hid the questions he was about to ask YN.

“Nooo” YN cried.

“Okay..” Harry looked at the cards in his hands and laughed at the words written on it. “Oh nooo” YN began to feel nervous about what she was about to be asked.

“One Direction has five albums..rank them from best to worst”, which caused the audience to applaud at the mention of the band.

YN held the glass of eggnog whilst debating if she should answer the question “I feel like I could answer” YN said to Harry as he watched her reaction from his seat opposite. “I feel like I could answer it” Harry responded, which made them both laugh as he shrugged his shoulders.

“Umm..I mean..I’ll start by saying they are all amazing..they really are”.

“Okay” Harry interrupted and looked at the camera with a serious expression, and then turned to look at YN and giggled. “They are” YN tried defending her answer before saying it out loud. “I swear..but I’d say Four is number one…and then..the songs are just so good..and then I mean that’s so hard, they’re all amazin’”. “Drink the eggnog” Harry encouraged. “Noooo” they both laughed. “And then it would be..like..Made In The A.M, Midnight Memories, Take Me Home..Up All Night” YN listed and then covered her face with her hands as Harry and the audience reacted with a roar of laughter.

“Alright..so now you choose something for me that I would have to eat”. “I’ll do the sperm” YN decided immediately and spun the table so the cod sperm was in front of Harry. “Okay..okay all in a day’s work” Harry joked waiting for YN to read the question.

YN looked at the card in her hand reading the question “They’re definitely dying to know this…which songs on your last album were about me” YN smiled at her boyfriend. “Oh god” he spoke and covered his eyes with his hand “You could answer this one”. “I know I could..but the people want to know”.

Harry grabbed a large green napkin from the side of him and began to tuck it into his shirt and picked up the knife and fork ready to eat the cod sperm. “Ewww” YN spoke as she watched Harry try to pick the food up and fail.

He put the knife and fork down on the table “So I would say track..uhh..” Harry teased the audience, which made YN laugh as she moved her hair from her face and over her shoulder. But he picked the fork up once again and picked the cod sperm up. YN looked at the scene in front of her with a disgusted expression “Just don’t look at it, she suggested. “Oh yeah..that fixes everything” Harry sarcastically said, clearly picking up YN’s sassy attitude after all these years. “Just don’t look at it” he mocked YN. After pausing for a moment and looking at the food sitting on top of the fork, Harry questions “What are we doing?”. “This was your idea” YN playfully scolded as she adjusted the dress covering her body.

Harry lifted the fork to his mouth and took a bite of the cod sperm which causes the audience to gasp and applaud loudly as he chews. Harry was chewing the food slowly which made YN look on confused. “Just swallow it..like why are you..”, causing Harry to look at the camera and shake his head at what YN had just said. “Oh my god!” YN shrieked after she realised what she had just said. To annoy and tease YN, Harry kept chewing slowly and pretending he wasn’t sure if he could spit the food in the bin next to him, “Stooop”.

“To spit or to swallow..that is the question” Harry joked, again making the audience roar with laughter, whilst YN stared at him with a smirk. After spitting the content in the bin and having a drink of his water Harry spun the table around. “Okay..salmon smoothie..give it a sniff”.

“Noo” YN said whilst shaking your head.“I hate salmon..by the way” YN confessed.

“I know..that’s why I choose it” Harry laughed.

“Okay…who was your favourite One Direction member when we were on The X Factor..not including your brother”. YN laughed “I have the answer, I can’t say it though” YH explained a she picked up the glass filled with the salmon smoothie and drank it, whilst the audience left out a roar of ‘ooh’s’ as they assumed YN was going to say it was Harry.

“Woooow!” Harry shrieked, just as shocked he wasn’t YN’s favourite. “It wasn’t me?..I bet it was Niall” Harry assumed, making YN chuckle but neither agreeing ir disagreeing.

“Watching you drink that made me feel sick” Harry admitted as she drank her water.

“Yeah it’s disgustin’”.

“I mean, it’s a salmon smoothie” Harry sarcastically spoke.

YN began to spin the table, “What am I having?” Harry asked. “Hmm..I’m giving you the scorpion”

“Okay..scorpion” Harry repeated as he coughed into his hand.

YN laughed before asking the question “Between Louis, Liam, Niall and Zayn..rank their solos…” before YN had the chance to finish the question, Harry picked up the scorpion from the white plate and began to eat it, causing the crowd to cheer, and YN smiled and clapped because she knew Harry would never answer that question.

“Okay..last question..I think we’re going to go with bull penis” as Harry quickly read the words on the card he let out a giggle “Okay..who’s music do you prefer..mine ooooor Louis”. The audience ‘ooo’d’ loudly at this one.

“I love both of your music” YN admitted.

“Nooo…you have to pick one of us” Harry stated with a cheeky grin on his face. “I feel like I can say it right…you’re both talented so..it won’t hurt you too much”.

“Well unless you want to eat some bull penis, yeah” Harry sarcastically answered. As YN thought about it, the audience shouted ‘say it’, “Of course, you want to know” YN spoke back to them. “I’m eating the penis” she decided. After trying to bite into it, YN spoke “It’s like squishy”.

“Just throw it all in then” Harry suggested, and YN did making Harry clap, and the audience clap and cheer. “That was Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts…we’ll be right back with more from The Late Late Show” Harry ended the segment whilst turning to look at YN making them both smile and laugh at what they had just done.
