I am still going thru everything in the pinned post at the moment so feel free to ignore this if you’ve already talked about them, but the lighthouse keepers have intrigued me! Tell me about them, please?

Ooh! No, I haven’t talked about this yet!

So the lighthouses are scattered around the coast of the main continent here:

Obviously there are other lighthouses in the world but the ones marked on this map are part of a group with a larger purpose.

Who are the lighthouse keepers?

The lighthouse keepers are a collection of powerful casters who protect and often prevent inter-planar travel. They particularly deal with creatures who manage to cross from their home planes into the mortal plane.

History

The lighthouses were first built before the dissolution, so before magestones prevented gods from travelling out of their plane. During this time a lot of creatures discovered ways to pass the boundaries with gods, or gods straight up let them into the mortal plane.

This was incredibly dangerous as a lot of these creatures wanted to kill the mortals, so a group of mages and druids formed an alliance to protect mortals from these extra-planar beings.

These casters were each given a section of the continent under their protection and they built lighthouses which all connect through arcane teleportation systems so they could arrive quickly if needed.

Present Day

Ok so in the present day there are 11 lighthouses and 54 designated lighthouse keepers. The keepers are spread between the lighthouses based on the needs of that area.

For example the lighthouse in the desert below the sand walkers is full of demonic creatures who travelled to the mortal plane before the magestones or that have found workarounds to return to the world. This is a particularly dangerous place so it has a higher number of lighthouse keepers (11)

Other entities that the lighthouses protect against include: Necromancers who return from death to life, demons, fey, enchanted creatures, gods sometimes, etc.

If it isn’t native to the Mortal plane they have a duty to banish it back to its home plane.

Different lighthouse keepers will have a speciality in one type of creature and they will be assigned to the lighthouse where that creature is most prevalent. There is always one keeper, called the traveller who travels between the lighthouses and across the continent to evaluate cross-zone problems and also to ensure all of the lighthouses are doing their jobs correctly. They also make contact with the other continents to discuss issues.

Because the keepers have such a long uninterrupted lineage, they also preserve history specifically cultural and religious history that would otherwise be forgotten to time.

Many lighthouses have their own libraries and many of the keepers are also scholars of history as well as magic and creatures.

Keeper -- a short comic about an angel meeting a robotic lighthouse keeper that doesn't know the world has already ended. Made in about 18 hours for a 24-hour 24-page* black and white comic challenge (that I arrived late to, ha.)

*the actual submission does not include the cover, which was created after the fact for this post.

This was a really great learning experience as someone who's... never really made a completed comic. I ended up really attached to the story by the end of the project (possibly due to all-nighter deliriousness lol) and ultimately am very proud of what I made.There are some things I'd still like to change, particularly text placement, but in keeping with the spirit of the challenge I've elected to leave it as is.

Could you tell me a little more about how the Drysar and lighthouses climbed the ranks?

I can!

Preface

So in 0PD the dissolution happened. I have a post on that here, but essentially the most powerful magic users in the world were largely wiped out. A large enough percentage of their population died in the war that the Edrelian empire could never reform, leaving a vacancy for magical control.

The Drysar

The Drysar had been around before the dissolution but did not get involved in the mages war, so after the fighting died down, the world looked to them and the few other remaining magical civilisations to supply magical items and essentially carry the flame of knowledge after the Edrels fell. This sudden increase in trade and focus on the Drysar as an arcane people encouraged them to further their research into the death realms which ended up with a deal with death for essentially immortality by reincarnation.

The drysar died quickly in the public imagination as other great arcane cities rose much faster and decisively, but they are still around in the modern day and hold the same values of passing down knowledge and investigating magic.

The Lighthouses

Similarly the lighthouses were created pre-dissolution, however they did not just emerge naturally like the Drysar.

They were founded to protect the world from the growing threat of extra-planar beings. Creatures from the Dieral and Azeraad planes had begun crawling through the cracks between worlds and driving mortals from their lands so a small group of powerful casters gathered together to hunt them.

Many years down the line, the Dissolution happens, which ends in a treaty. A lighthouse keeper is sent to the negotiations, and proposes the condition that gods can no longer travel into the mortal plane and this applies to that god’s creatures. This dramatically reduces the threat so the lighthouse keepers settled down around the coast and watch for threats while protecting from creatures who passed through before the accords.
