Sauci Churchill’s Quiet . . . Collected Poems brings us into a compelling voice that is distinctive in its presence, whether joyous, sad, tender, comic, reflective, or fearful. Sauci S. Churchill graduated from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and took graduate work at the University of California at Berkeley. After teaching and working as a law librarian for more than three decades in a windowless inner core of a government building, she retired to work at Hillwood Museum and Gardens, where she asked only to be put into the light. She lived with her husband, Bruce Butterworth, and the third of their shelter dogs, Cloud. In November of 2010, she was diagnosed with ALS, and died of the disease seven months later on June 3, 2011. She was cared for every moment until the end by her husband Bruce Butterworth. Her daughter, Devorah Churchill from a previous marriage, mourned her death then, and now, as do so many of her friends whom she helped so much with her life, and her works. This book, which begins with the works written between her diagnosis of ALS and her death, is published so that those poems will not be forgotten: Her husband says: “she faced death realistically, with unforgettable courage. She always chose her own way, and did until the end. I will always remember her.”

This elegant, intelligent, and deeply moving collection of poems is aptly named. Sauci Churchill’s lyricism is indeed, quiet, and all the more powerful for it. She finds miracles in the smallest things — a tiny harmonica, a white lace collar, even the blink of an eye — and builds exquisite shrines of poetry round them. That hush in her voice reminds us that everything, seen properly, is part of a sacred whole. What a blessing this book is.

It is good to have Sauci Churchill’s early work and later poems brought together here. Her poems have long been marked by a unique combination of delicacy and toughness, reticence and candor. The poems she wrote between her diagnosis with ALS and her death in 2011 add moments of angry humor and astonishing beauty. “I lay down/in the whitest of snow,” she writes. “later that evening/ a small red fox/ sniffs my face/ and moves on.”

Sauci Churchill’s poems are quiet marvels — this is not hyperbole. Her seemingly simple diction and concreteness of line, whether writing of childhood memories in Chicago (Running Down Division Street) or traveling in Jamaica and Croatia, or in meditations on sorrow and pain — which “like the night sky, is vast / Twinkling, it seems to come and go / but is steadfast like the north Star” — or in comic self-deprecation, the poems from one to the next have a luminesce about them: “Who’s to say on a shining summer evening/ with my planet or star ascending / and my clothes strewn about / that I cannot dance/in the privacy of /the moon’s light / just as I am / as I am.” The poems of Quiet have a singular voice — you cannot help lingering amidst their warm companionability.

An Elizabethtown Area School District parent filed a formal challenge of the popular coming of age book “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” in the hopes of having it pulled from library shelves, prompting a response from the novel’s author, Jesse Andrews.

Though the ban request was filed by a parent April 13, the novel released in 2012 has been a point of contention at Elizabethtown school board meetings since November 2021 when the district was swept into a nationwide conversation about the New York Times best-selling novel, which moved into the spotlight last year as one of the top 10 most challenged books, according to the American Library Association.

At last November’s board meeting, a man who gave what is now believed to be a fake name and address read a line from “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” which explicitly mentions performing oral sex on a female.

Saying the content was “absolutely disgusting,” the man, who identified himself as Dan Matthews, asked that the book be removed from the school library as his 11-year-old daughter had checked it out. District spokesperson Troy Portser said that after investigating, the district believes Matthews doesn’t have a child enrolled in the district.

Still, the book was temporarily pulled from the shelves to ensure nothing was amiss with the district’s opt-out program, Portser said. “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” is one of several books flagged for its content. Parents and guardians of district students can restrict their student’s access to certain books that may contain mature subject matter through the school’s opt-out program.

Approximately 30 of Elizabethtown’s 3,700 middle and high school students are on the opt-out list, Portser said.

While “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” made it back into the library, the book is now undergoing another review. In a formal request to ban the book submitted April 13, Elizabethtown parent Tina Wilson claims “obscene and sexual” content.

In adherence to Elizabethtown Area School Board Policy 906, the review committee is composed of educators including guidance counselors, librarians, principals and teachers. A formal decision won’t come until approximately four to six weeks, and until then the book will remain on the shelves.

Portser stressed that any decision made in the initial review process, however, is not the end.

A decision can be appealed to the superintendent. And, the superintendent’s response can again appeal to the school board.

‘One less opportunity’

The scrutiny of “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” has gained the attention of even its author, who wrote a letter to Elizabethtown school board President Terry Seiders.

“Every ban creates one less opportunity for a child to find a book that speaks to them and makes them fall in love with reading,” Andrews wrote. “Then again, every ban creates one more book that kids become way, way more interested in getting their hands on. So maybe all of this is moot.”

Kelly Fuddy, secretary for Elizabethtown group Common Sense 2.0 read Andrews’ letter aloud at an April 26 school board meeting. Common Sense 2.0 is a grassroots organization formed in 2021 with the mission statement of ensuring “school policies come from a place of inclusiveness and understanding.”

Andrews also posted the letter on his Twitter page @_jesse_andrews_, where he has long been outspoken against book banning efforts, particularly those targeting his book.

In his letter, Andrews writes that his book inspired a love of reading in kids who previously didn’t like books, and adds “I hope you will agree with me that this is a good thing.”

However, Tina Wilson, the woman who formally challenged Andrews’ book, wrote in her ban request that “there is very little of value in this book.”

“The author portrays himself as an extremely selfish person who never – not even at the end of her life – cares that his friend is dying,” she continues in her request. “He is only concerned that he finds her annoying and is put out that he has to spend time with her.”

Wilson recommends the book as appropriate only for those 18 and older – not middle school and high school students. The book, she states, “contains a huge amount of obscene and sexual material.”

She includes the line Matthews read at the November 2021 school board meeting under examples of objectionable content and notes “the examples above are only a small portion of the obscenity in this book.”

“As we know, the First Amendment protects the author but not the reader,” Wilson states at the end of her request. “Our children must be protected from obscene material such as this.”

While students can check out “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” from the school’s library, two speakers at the April 26 board meeting complained that they cannot check out the Bible. Speakers Justin Roether and Juana Ritchey urged the district to place the Bible in the library as there are no copies there currently, according to Portser.

Freedom Readers

Meanwhile, Some Elizabethtown district residents are organizing around their opposition to banning books.

Long-time Elizabethtown Borough resident Judi Grove started the Freedom Readers book club in opposition to book bannings earlier this year.

The group, which Grove described as nonpartisan, reads through books on the American Library Association’s list of challenged or banned books. Then individual members can review it and post it to the group’s webpage on Common Sense 2.0.

Over the last few months, the group has obtained dozens of copies of “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl” to hand out to those who haven’t read it yet. Grove said most of the people who object to its content likely haven’t read it.

Grove spoke at the April 26 Elizabethtown Area School Board meeting to raise awareness about Freedom Readers and offer free copies of the book to anyone who wants it. The group is also in support of a public event, organized by Common Sense 2.0, to discuss the merits and challenges to “Me and Earl and the Dying Girl.” The event is scheduled from 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 31 at the Elizabethtown Coffee Company in the Elizabethtown Public Library.

New Florida Laws in 2023

Florida’s legislature has enacted a number of new laws for 2023.  Notable among the new laws is the prohibition of allowing third party contractors to sue insurance companies on behalf of the insured (a practice known as “assignment of benefits”) and toll relief for motorists who frequently travel toll roads.

TOLL CREDITS: Last December, lawmakers approved a measure (SB 6-A) that provides 50 percent credits to motorists who record 35 or more toll-road trips in a month. The program will last for a year, and includes a  $500 million  grant to  toll agencies  to cover lost revenue.

RESTRICTIONS ON LOBBYING: New laws (HB 7001 and HB 7003) will carry out a constitutional amendment that voters passed in 2018 to expand from two to six years the time that certain officials will have to wait to start lobbying after leaving government positions. The restrictions will apply to lawmakers, state agency heads, judges and many local officials.

DISASTER RELIEF: Responding to the devastating 2021 collapse of the Champlain Towers South building in Surfside, lawmakers approved property tax rebates when residential properties are rendered uninhabitable for 30 days. During the December special session, lawmakers passed a measure (SB 4-A) to offer similar rebates to property owners who sustained damage in Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Nicole. Property owners will be able to apply to county property appraisers between Jan. 1 and April 1.

PUBLIC NOTICES: HB 7049 allows local governments to publish legal notices on county websites instead of in newspapers. Local governments in counties with fewer than 160,000 residents must first hold public hearings to determine if residents have sufficient access to the internet.

WORKERS' COMPENSATION RATES:  The Florida Department of Insurance Regulation approved an overall 8.4 percent decrease in workers’ compensation insurance premiums for 2023.  This change took effect in January, marking the seventh consecutive year that average rates have decreased.

PROPERTY INSURANCE: During the December 2022, the Florida legislature  enacted a law that ended the controversial practice known as assignment of benefits for property insurance. The practice involves homeowners signing over claims to contractors, who then pursue payments from insurers. The prohibition on assignment of benefits (SB 2-A) applies to policies issued on or after Jan. 1.

APPELLATE COURTS: Florida’s appellate courts were revamped Jan. 1 under a law (HB 7027) that created a 6th District Court of Appeal and revised the jurisdictions of the 1st District Court of Appeal, the 2nd District Court of Appeal and the 5th District Court of Appeal.

SCHOOL LIBRARY BOOK SELECTIONS: As part of a broader education bill (HB 1467), lawmakers required that a training program be available as of Jan. 1 for school librarians, media specialists and others involved in the selection of school library materials. The program is aimed, in part, at providing access to “age-appropriate materials and library resources.”

MIYA'S LAW: Lawmakers passed a measure (SB 898) that will require apartment landlords to conduct background checks on all employees. The bill, dubbed “Miya’s Law,” was prompted by the death of 19-year-old Miya Marcano, a Valencia College student who went missing from her Orlando apartment in September and later found dead. The suspected killer, who later committed suicide, worked as a maintenance worker at Marcano’s apartment complex.

Writblr Intro 2: Electric Boogaloo

My name is Nico, my pronouns are he/him and it/its, and I'm a queer teen writer. I write mostly fantasy, with a dash of sci-fi and thriller.

Most of what I write is YA/teen, though I have ideas for other things (specifically middle grade & perhaps a NA story) that I may work on in the future.

I'm OK with adults following, but don't be creepy, and don't follow if your blog is specifically 18+.

This tumblr will be mostly writing content, along with some art, memes, social justice, and posts I just generally like. I also post writing advice, and my masterpost can be found here.

Some things: I am a queer inclusionist of all good-faith identities. I am autistic and am very passionate about disability activism, especially in regards to making writblr a more welcoming place for my fellow disabled & mentally ill people. I will not tolerate any sort of bigotry and am quick to block, though I will take questions in good faith and am glad to answer them.

I write mostly fantasy, often heavily featuring mental health, queerness, friendship, and morality. And as the lovely review above shows, I am not hesitant toward angst <3

Speaking of Mika, aka @strawberrystarcake: we run a short story event each month. I post a prompt, and then people write stories based on them. (I've written 2 so far.) The masterlist of all stories people have written for it (including me!) is here.

Gay Fairytale Series/GFS: This is a 5-book YA fantasy series that is a loose retelling of a few fairytales (mainly Cinderella). The books are, currently: Moonlit Blood, and... the other 4, lmao. I don't put titles online. (Summary for books 1 and 2 is below.)

Moonlit Blood, aka GFW1: When Angel Lavoie accidentally cons their way into having to do work, they must team up with four other dysfunctional criminals in order to crash a royal masquerade and steal the cage that houses the soul of a vengeful god-monster. Features themes of family, friendship, and self-worth. (intro)

GFS book 2, aka GFW2: Rowan never meant to be drawn into anything. But when, instead of dying like they were supposed to, Angel and their friends literally break magic, she doesn't really have a choice. Features themes of trust, betrayal, and doing the right thing.

The Rose Librarians: Eleanor finds a magic library in the middle of nowhere. It's all good at first, but when the library's secrets turn out to be darker than expected, she must team up with Charlie--the strange but knowing librarian--in order to keep herself alive. Features themes of depression, self worth, and coping mechanisms. (Intro.)

Louis shrugs, suddenly acting disinterested.

Instead of a verbal response, Harry suddenly takes Louis’ left hand in his. The black ring seems to nag him as the fire’s light reflects its polished edges. He ignores Louis’ curious gaze as he quickly takes off one of his own rings — the rose one —, sliding it on Louis’ middle finger. It is a little large and when he lets go of his hand, Louis has to curl it into a fist so the ring doesn’t immediately fall off.

“We’ll tell them it’s a promise ring, not an actual engagement,” Harry declares, trying to ignore how warm his cheeks feel. Hopefully, it can’t be seen as he is facing away from the fireplace.

“Right… could have gotten me a fitted ring though, my Harry ten years ago was more thoughtful.”

Louis’ tone is light and teasing again. It creates a small smile on Harry’s lips.

“Someday,” he whispers before he even registers it himself.

They both ignore it.

Weeks of flat shopping with their limited budget with Louis as a librarian aid and Harry as a barista and arguments about whether a balcony or extended bathroom suite were more important (Harry wanted to be able to feel the crisp night’s air and watch the sun set and Louis just wanted to take long bubble baths) led to them stumbling across the perfect fit. A small flat only ten minutes from campus with a cramped but lovely balcony and an included bath.

It’s affordable too… well, sort of. But they always manage. Louis picks up more shifts as an aid, adapting a habit of bringing his Psych textbooks and homework with him to finish in between duties, and later his script so he can quietly practice lines with little distraction.

Harry also increases his number of shifts at the cafe and valiantly endures the nasty customers who for some reason flock to their establishment like moths to a flame.

For a while, it’s enough.

Or, Harry and Louis need money and they find an unconventional solution in the form of PornHub. It’s not supposed to be a big deal.

“Y/N, hurry up. We need to catch that bastard,” Dean pants, chasing after the guy stealing your purse. “What’s wrong with you? Don’t you want to get your stuff back?”

“I-I,” you can still scent the man stealing your purse. He’s not a normal guy wanting your money or phone. No, that one is a treacherous little snake working for your family. “We should just let him get away with it. I barely had five bucks in my wallet and my phone is old, Dean. It’s just not worth it.”

“You killed vampires, ghouls, and other monsters only to what – run for the hills as a drunk dude stole your purse?” wondering why you don’t want to go after the man Dean furrows his brows. “Y/N, is something wrong?”

“Dean please don’t get mad, but I know that guy,” you shuffle from one foot to the other. “He works for my family, and I guess they found me again. Running away doesn’t work for too long. Past always catches up, ya know.”

“Wait, you know that guy?” gasping Sam watches his brother pressure you to answer his questions. “What’s so terrifying about your family? Why do you never talk about them?”

“You see, it’s their lifestyle, Dean. Just like your father forced you to become hunters and follow his orders, my family wanted me to follow our traditions and so on. But I just didn’t want to be like them. I can control my nature,” you bite your tongue, fearing the time has come to reveal your true nature.

“Nature? I don’t understand, sweetheart. You are a hunter, a sweet girl, and a librarian. What do you mean with nature?”

“I-I’m not like you and Sam,” you whisper the words. “Unlike my family and their friends, I want to protect people and not harm them but I’m not a normal human.”

“Is your family a bunch of serial killers?” Dean snickers, poking your chest. “Come on, Y/N. Family can be a pain in the ass, just look at Sammy,” you giggle for a moment but then your eyes fill with tears. “Tell me what’s wrong.”

“You will hate me,” you sniff, clutching your hands to your chest. “I swear, I never hurt anyone. I keep my needs and instinct under control. I only need to eat one per month. For the rest of the time, I’m a normal girl. Well, as normal as I can be.”

“Normal girl? One per month?” the hunter huffs now, obviously annoyed. “Spill it, speedy. I don’t want to spend the night out here. Give me something.”

“I-I,” you stutter, looking at Sam for help. He found out about your secret a few months ago, and simply observed you. Sam wanted to be sure you are no threat to them and not kill you only as he’s a hunter. “I’m a werewolf, a pureblood.”

“No—” Dean shakes his head in disbelief, gun aimed at your heart seconds later. “How could she trick us for so long, Sammy?” looking at his brother, Dean knows Sam was hiding your true nature from him. “Sammy?”

“I found out a few months ago, Dean. She’s no harm,” Sam tries to protect you. “She eats animal hearts once per month. That’s all. Please, she can control her change. She’s a pureblood, not one of those changed beasts losing control.”

“She's a werewolf,” you wince when Dean looks at you like you are a monster. This is the moment you always feared. “We got to kill her.”

“We didn’t kill Garth or his wife,” the younger brother interjects. “Garth got bitten and must control his instinct. Y/N easily controls her true nature. She never harmed anyone, Dean. Maybe she’s more human than one of us.”

“How can you—” dropping his head Dean shakes it lightly. “All those months I believed we are friends. Now you are just another monster.”

“Then kill me,” whispering the words you drop to your knees. “If anyone does kill me, it should be you. I’m done running away from my family. They want me to come back and be like them. I rather die than killing innocent people.”

“Get back up,” the hunter growls. “Show a bit of self-control. Die like a proud beast.”

“Dean, don’t—” Sam pleads. “She can just go away and never come back. Please don’t do this, Dean. Trust me for once.”

“I trust you, Sammy,” Dean unlocks the gun, swallowing thickly when you close your eyes. “But I can’t trust her.”

“Just do it,” you beg, whimpering when you catch the other wolf’s scent. “NO!” you suddenly jump up to dash past Dean, taking the hunter by surprise.

He twirls around to watch your hands, turn into claws. You howl, jumping at the werewolf who tried to sneak behind Dean.

“Y/N!” Sam runs after you, watches you slam your fist into the werewolf's chest, growling at him. “Ohmygod!”

“He-he wanted to hurt Dean,” you sniff, ripping the wolf’s heart out, looking at it for a moment . “I never killed like that before.”

“Y/N,” Dean watches you drop the heart, panicking when you smell the wolf’s blood on you.

“No—no! Blood, so much blood,” you cry. “I-I need to get it off me! I don’t want it on me. Help! Please help me!”

“Sweetheart,” watching your hands change back to normal Dean secures his gun. “You need to get up, okay. People heard the bastard scream,” he grasps for you, drags you away from the dead wolf. “Sammy, look for Y/N’s purse. They can’t find it.”

“What now?” you feel your head spinning. “I killed him. OhgodIkilledsomeone!”

“A werewolf, a bad one,” Dean helps you walk toward his car. “So — uh, you’re a good wolf? A nice puppy? Will you lie in the back and not chew on my seats?” you nod silently, not wanting Dean to get mad again. "We will have a serious conversation when we are back at the bunker."

“Dean can you just not—“ Sam groans when Dean snickers at his brother’s words. “She’s not an animal.”

“What?” Dean cocks his head. “You always wanted a dog. Now I got you a nice well-behaved wolf.”

i do have wips that i canʼt finish and i do also have prompts that i canʼt seem to write. thatʼs just how it is when writerʼs block is literally living with you *sighs*

and donʼt worry! i donʼt think this is a rude thing to ask. i actually want to talk about the prompts i have in my head, i just donʼt know where to start. iʼm glad you ask, anon! ^^

(okay... with a sudden edit from me, i would also be adding prompts that are not from me since i think it would be a nice idea to have its wide recognition it clearly deserve <3 (if it doesnʼt already /nm)).

(not an actual wip since i wrote a little bit of it; itʼs up for adoption though because i seriously canʼt continue it), detective au with both dream and techno being a detective. they are in a different organizations who has a little bit of rivalry since both of their presidents are a little cocky for having dream/techno in their organization. and then something happened that made both of them need to work together (a typical enemies to lovers plot just because).

ranboo forgetting that his parents are dream and techno. again, this is not an actual wip since i also wrote a little bit of it, but iʼm including this because it has potential. fortunately though, thereʼs an author who wrote almost exactly the same thing! donʼt know which one us posted first; donʼt really care. at least it exists *chefʼs kiss* i do think that we need to give attention to this prompt. i think itʼs neat.

rapunzel au with dream as rapunzel. i know, i know, techno is the one who has long hair but hear me out. golden-haired rapunzel? sounds like dream to me. and besides, techno can also have long hair but dreamʼs the one who has magical hair. also, also, patches as pascal the chameleon? and then carl as maximus the horse? itʼs perfect and itʼs excellent. techno having voices is a nice addition too, honestly. (now, this is an actual wip of mine. this was supposed to be my gift to star (for the dnb exchange that happened), but i realized it would take months for me to write since i was planning to do an actual adaption of the movie so i decided to stop).

uhm... i donʼt know what to call it, but it has something to do with rivals academy. this wip of mine was a bit inspired by scoutʼs fanfic that i donʼt remember the title. the prompt is literally just ranboo trying to figure out the history behind his academy (which is the rivals academy) through books in the campusʼ library. librarian dream knows his fascination about the history so he told him he knew someone who knows the actual history of it (i sadly did not continue this after chapter 1 because i also realized it would take months to get finished since my plan for it was a lot (and i mean, a lot).

techno taking over phil, ranboo taking over techno and micheal taking over ranboo. this is a prompt thatʼs been going through my mind for the past months (probably started around november 2021). this prompt is 5 + 1 but itʼs just 4 + 1. the pov of this is an outsider (literally an outsider) who noticed how techno is just like phil. and then it continues from techno to ranboo and to micheal, and probably in the future as well. itʼs like... a found family thing but not really. why am i so hard at explaining things? *sighs* letʼs just say that that outsider sees phil in techno, sees techno in ranboo and sees micheal in ranboo. thatʼs the best i can give you...

modern au with dream falling in love with a fictional man, techno, from a book he recently bought. i was organizing my gallery and then i came across this video that i saved from liliʼs server and it was about that tiktok song that goes, “i fall in love with boys i see on the tv screen, the one in books who were as perfect as they can be~” but with dnb; it was from an og member that was a friend of mine (from my other account because... people change), and i thought, yeah, thatʼs a nice concept. and although itʼs angst - `cause you know, falling in love with fictional man? really, dream? - is a bit... heart breaking, itʼs an excellent idea. i would love to read a fanfic of this.

okay... the whole, “maybe in another loop, finally, i can love you the way i wanted to.” thatʼs all iʼm giving you, thatʼs all.

fuck it, i want every disney princess movie to be about dnb (well, maybe not all of them since not all have the romance thing but you get my point). especially aladin and the little mermaid. come onnn, iʼve seen enough beauty and the beast, and tangled au, thereʼs even cinderella au, and i need another disney au ;-;

i want actors au so here i am. so, uh, both techno and dream are actors, and they are rivals to say the least. they are both famous and popular so likely they very much hate each other. they don't even want to be in the same film, so whenever they are invited to a certain film that has each other, they will turn it down. BUT, something happened. there will be a film about romance, especially m/m and it's so popular among audiences; dream auditioned for it since he's done bl series/movies several times already and he got in! the only thing is, that techno also auditioned since he doesn't really care and just need his popularity to increase more; he also got in. so what's next, you say? what if... just what if, throughout the times they are shooting scenes with each other (especially kissing scenes), the other is going to be like, “wait... do i love him? fuck no, i'm just being in character too much,” and then the other is also like that! it's up to you whether it's going to be a happy ending or not.

so uh, has anybody write spy x family as somni trio yet? well, okay, i know that i haven't watched it, but come on, i can see some parallels between them! someone has to do one.

and thatʼs it. itʼs not a lot, really. i donʼt have the capacity to think more because my school is literally killing me with their works.

am i planning on making more? probably. letʼs see in the future *winks*

and do i hope that some author would see this and take inspiration to write it? absolutely! i would even kneel before them if they did. itʼs just the way it is. if i canʼt write them then i would wish someone else would do *sobs*
