So.

Mom Lalonde, Grandpa Harley, Nanna Egbert, and Bro Strider, reborn as the story's protagonists, and thrust into a Playerdom I never expected them to bear. The consequences of this reveal are likely to kick in on the very next page - and since that's a page I'm clicking on tonight, this is my last chance for some blind speculation.

There are an absolute mountain of angles I could potentially cover here, and it's impossible to address all the implications of this twist, so I'm just going to touch on a few key questions that Act 6 will need to answer sooner rather than later.

Without further ado, let's dive into our first question.

Who, exactly, is raising these kids?

The simplest solution, of course, would be a one-to-one exchange between each Player and their Guardian. That certainly seems to be the case for Jade and Grandpa, who have been directly swapped. This would imply that Rose raised Mom, Dave raised Bro, and John might have raised Nanna. (More on that later.)

Still, that's not the only possibility. There's no reason why Dave couldn't raise the adolescent Mom instead, for example, with Rose adopting the younger Bro in his stead. That particular configuration has a lot of character potential, actually, because Bro Lalonde would undoubtedly be an unholy terror, and Mom Strider might just be one of the coolest characters I've ever conceived of.

This aesthetic, with those shades? Come on.

...all that said, though, I'm fairly sure we are just getting a one-to-one swap. That's how it appears to have worked for the trolls, and the one post-Scratch Player with a confirmed Guardian already matches this pattern.

Plus, swapping the kids with their own parents is just so interesting, on a character level, as it'd add a whole new dimension of analysis to the fucked-up relationships between Bro & Dave, Mom & Rose, and Grandpa & Jade.

Seeing how they all treat each other, now that the roles have been reversed, would be incredibly illuminating, and might shed some light on the thought processes of the pre-Scratched Guardians, as they were raising their own respective charges.

Anyway - now that we've got that out of the way, let's talk about each individual family.

The Egberts

Astute readers will notice that I only mentioned the Guardian-Player parallels for three of our Players above - and that's because when it comes to the fourth, there's a slight complication.

Namely, Dad Egbert no longer exists.

This means that Nanna's home life can't parallel John's, because the man who raised John was never even born. It's possible, then, that John will simply raise Nanna himself, as her grandfather.

Honestly, that's the scenario I'm hoping for, here. Out of our four original Players, I think that John would be the best parent by far - he's sweet, resilient, and has a natural talent for nurturing the positive qualities of the people he loves. If a baby lands in his backyard, he's going to rise to the challenge, octogenarianism be damned.

...now, here's where I'd speculate a little about Nanna's personality, but she's the one post-Scratch Player I can't really get a bead on. We only ever interacted with her Spritesona, whose personality was obviously corrupted by the presence of the jester doll.

As a result, I don't really have a clue what Nanna will be like. The only thing I'm sure about, if John's the one raising her, is that she'll be loved.

The Striders

First of all, I have faith in Dave.

I think he's more or less guaranteed to be a better Guardian than his brother ever was. Granted, I don't think Dave would be particularly paternal, but I also think he'll be able to refrain from beating Bro's ass with a puppet, which is progress.

I think Dave would be a laissez-faire type of guardian, who allows the younger Bro a lot more agency and autonomy than other kids his age, but also struggles to be the adult in the room when his kid needs guidance. He's not going to be as traumatized as his younger self, but I bet it's still borderline impossible to have a serious conversation with him. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Kid Bro turned out to be the more mature of the pair.

In a nutshell, Dave was born to be a cool uncle, but was forced unwittingly into a parental role instead. He's doing his best.

Quite frankly, I'm very worried about Kid Bro.

If we assume that every Paradox Clone keeps the same Veil item as last time - and there's no reason why they wouldn't - then Bro will be coming down with Lil' Cal, the cursed puppet created by Gamzee's Chucklevoodoos.

I'm still convinced that long-term exposure to this abomination was the main reason Bro was so batshit insane, and while the younger Bro won't have been around it for quite as long, he'll still have thirteen years of an evil Juggalo's Rage miasma being beamed into his brain.

I think Kid Bro will be a little batshit, but not completely batshit. We'll see a child with the potential to become the deranged ventriloquist who tormented Dave, but one who can still be saved, if we can just get that hell puppet away from him.

Separated from Cal, I still think Bro will be a memelord, and I'm sure not all his interests came from the puppet. I think this guy was always destined to be a pretty bizarre dude - but with luck, this iteration of him will be a little more pleasant to be around.

The Lalondes

Rose... could go either way, honestly.

Just like Dave, I don't think she's the type who'd willingly choose to be a parent. Rose doesn't want a baby, she wants a library full of cursed tomes, a coven of witches to scheme with, and to live in an enormous gothic castle with her wife, Kanaya Maryam. Her ideal lifestyle couldn't handle a kid, and I think she's self-aware enough to know that, and adopt a hundred mutant kittens instead.

That said... if she had to raise a daughter, I think she'd try her best to do right by the girl. I think some part of her would absolutely resent the fact that she's a background character in someone else's life - especially if, like the Sufferer, she remembers being a Player - but she'd do everything she could to keep that resentment to herself.

Rose would be an alright mother. A little cold, maybe, and more than a little distant, but she'd still love her Roxy.

As for Roxy, I can only assume she's a gigantic fucking badass. Even among the Guardians, her barehanded combat feats were always astounding, and I think she and Kid Bro will be the primary combatants of their session.

I also think she'll be one of the most analytical, scientifically-minded Players we've ever seen. Her adult self was experimenting with Ectobiology even outside of Sburb, which suggests to me an intense curiosity about how all this shit works, which isn't present in most of our other heroes. Like Rose, she'll be a researcher, and maybe even a Seer - but while Rose searched for the truth via magic and mysticism, Roxy's research will be entirely scientific.

Honestly, the most exciting thing about finally meeting Roxy is the milestone it'll represent. I'll finally, finally have encountered every character I knew about prior to starting the comic.

The Harleys

Grandma Jade was still the Witch of Space, and was clearly aware of that fact.

This tells us that:

John, Rose and Dave also retained their Titles, even if they don't know it.

Grandma Jade was probably aware of Sburb and its secrets, especially if she was living near the Frog Temple.

Grandma Jade was the Witch of Space. She's gone.

...and I have a theory about what happened to her.

I think that when Grandpa was a baby, Jade travelled to Anachronism Island, just like her predecessor did - but this time around, it wasn't Bec who greeted her at the Temple.

No, I think Jade had a fatal encounter with the new First Guardian of Earth - a corrupted First Guardian, spliced with the same HONK code that created Scratch. Kid Grandpa clearly survived whatever happened next, and I think it's horribly plausible that the new First Guardian is a pseudo-Guardian to him, the same way Becquerel was to Jade.

In other words, this kid might be completely compromised, manipulated by English's servant since infancy. Let's not forget that he's the one who suggested making the bunny to Jade, which is the reason Jack was able to ascend in the first place...

...but someone suggested it to him, first.

Anyway, those are my high-level thoughts about the new timeline's key players. We'll be starting Act 6 in an hour or so, and I've got a feeling that we're about to see Nanna standing in a very familiar room.

After all, it just so happens that today...

IM SHAKING I'M ROCKING BACK AND FORTH AND HITTING MY HEAD AGAINST THE WALL...

I initially thought round 7 would be something emotional in the sense that it would be more gloomy and depressing, but no--this is literally some crazy ass upbeat techno-disco rave-themed music....in other words, It feels like a concert this time.

The atmosphere is so energetic I WASN'T EXPECTING IT.

It's interesting how they stand on a stage that symbolizes themselves equally in a meshed sort of way, blue and green, in equal distance and on equal footing, unlike round 5 when Luka used elevation to his advantage a lot, it feels different here. Round 7 feels like a mix of their styles; even the song has a soft tempo with a mix of Till's roughness in there, but the idea that they'll fight for the stage feels somewhat pushed here. They both stand on the stage like they own it, and given their nature, Luka's manipulative personality allows him to dominate the stage with his presence, and Till's unwillingness to be overshadowed and made inferior this feels like on the flip side this round will be a real, and intense competition.

Round 7 is very different because, unlike the other rounds, Luka and Till are rivals. They have no chemistry of any sort. The reason why I say round 7 will be a real competition is because all the rounds before weren't, round 1, 2, 3, and 6 focused on the intimacy and relationship between characters, they were telling a story, pouring their hearts out through their songs, while round 7 will be made into a true death match.

In typical fashion, Luka establishes himself with a sense of superiority as he spreads out, fills the arena with his presence, absorbs the energy of the stage, and captivates the aliens' attention. It's because he's confident, at least outwardly. He sets up the illusion of power this way, but truthfully, he is more controlled than ever. The strings on his costume look akin to puppet strings to me. That kind of symbolism has been shown in his other costumes before, but this feels overbearing, and trapping.

Till is more reserved in the teaser, at least in this example, he's hidden in the shadows, and how he's feeling is ambiguous, though obviously, it isn't anything good, given that he was just thrown on the stage while he's mentally unstable and confused I'm sure that's an understatement.

When Vivinos mentions Till's emotional journey...what mindset Till will bring to the stage...this round is gonna be chaotic as hell

To me, Till looks all sorts of things, and anger is most prominent. He's flashy and loud, and the colors he's represented with are his own, Till embodies rebellion, and symbolizes that he's fighting to push the barriers of his cage, while Luka embraces his. after everything he's been through I'm sure his mind is a thunderstorm of mixed emotions, even just the look in his eyes.. so considering that--his side of things will probably be a lot more messy, but there is a good sign here that shows he seems to have regained his fighting spirit he doesn't look like he'll be going down without a fight at all.

And their body language here in the last frame--The lighting in this frame looks intense, like the weight of those lights is gradually bearing down on them, Till looks strangely slouched over like he's out of it (I believe he may have been drugged by the aliens again..) while Luka, for once, isn't even looking at his audience, he's looking to the side, seemingly distracted. It's notable just how detached they look from their performance and the moment. The detached and performative nature of round 7 highlights how this performance is all merely a high-budget spectacle, entertainment for the aliens as it always was. It's a fitting vibe for Luka and Till, who had gone through the most to make it here just to have every aspect of their personalities marketed, and to be paraded around like trophies by their guardians.

And now the title--FOUL. Is how i'd describe it based on my reading of it.

"Blink gone" could be connected to the other teaser, "Never come back again" as in --> "blink gone--and never come back again" is maybe a reference to the things (or people) they've lost in their lives, in seemingly the blink of an eye.

In general, blink gone is related to something fast-moving. So how will that sentiment be expressed in round 7 through their perspectives?

And YET AGAIN. I come back to this official art for another more parallel, I have no idea what the bands around Tills arms are about, but these two seem to correlate. (Or they could mean nothing at all. absolutely nothing at all. But fun fact: wearing black bands on your arm can be representative of mourning)

And Luka's design here, Luka still hasn't changed his aesthetic, so nothing noteworthy other than the fact that his outfit just got more revealing, I can probably see why, if there is an alien equivalent of fan service in the universe of Alien stage. There are lines on his chest that I assume are meant to be scarring? Luka has been said to have had surgeries and experiments before so that little detail they included...ughhhh.

And Mizi will seemingly be showing up for another rescue attempt, but as expected, the area is heavily guarded, more so than in round 6, so this may be a little tricky, and I have no idea how they'll pull it off this time with the atmosphere so intense and the aliens so close to them...

10 Character Dynamics the World Needs More of

Me handing out character dynamics like free samples at the Mall Food Court: “Take one! Or two! You’ll love it!”

I don’t care how many times these tropes have been done – write more of them. Write all of them. Fill out your author bingo card one by one.

1. “No one gets to kill you but me, Old Friend”

This. Right here. Primo rival content that I *live* for. All the juicy history between two old frenemies, the character drama, the backstory, the titillating unknown of what drove these two to rival status, bitter enemies that respect the heck out of each other, to the point that hell hath no fury should one get knocked down without the other’s consent.

And, of course, the moment where it seems all bets are off, when the rival comes to save their ass only to hand it back to them at a later date. The angst! The shipping fodder! Need I say more?

2. A bigger, badder villain, and their minion

You, reader, spend countless hours hating the guts of the big bad villain. They’re evil, they’re vile, they’re sadistic, heartless, irredeemable bastards. They killed your favorite character for shock value. The big bad moustache-twirling antagonist… is actually not the biggest fish in the story.

Either they’re coerced into doing evil as a puppet of the Bigger Bad, a tragic villain in their own right, or they have some reservation, some line even they won’t cross, someone else’s boots they have to kiss, someone who features in their nightmares, as they feature in the heroes. They end their stories dispatched without a thought by the Bigger Bad, or redeem themselves in death by taking out their masters. It never gets old.

3. A leader and their lancer: besties

You know what’s better than leaders and lancers who have zero faith in each other and are constantly bickering about who should be in charge? Leaders and their right-hands who adore each other (platonically). They have each other’s backs, they know each other’s greatest strengths and weaknesses and are each other’s perfect covers.

They can communicate with looks and vague gestures alone, they compliment each other’s flaws and misgivings, build up the rest of the team when they’re down on their luck, and should misfortune strike either, they pull out all the stops and show off exactly why they’re not to be trifled with, so that even the villain is afraid.

4. “I don’t even know who you are”

Oh, but you will. This one twists the knife, robbing the avenging hero of the importance in this world they’re desperate to maintain. They are their own hero, the sun revolves around them… but not to this one asshat that ruined their life and doesn’t even remember doing it.

An entire identity built upon the finding, fighting, and overcoming of this wrongdoer, every other goal in life cast aside for this one impossibility. Either the villain toys with the hero to make them irate, or gets suckerpunched by some pissant fueled by vengeance and spite and divine purpose to dole justice where justice is due.

6. The jaded badass and their naive ward

If the last 8 years of media is anything to go by, we still love this trope, whether it’s in a galaxy far, far away or a fungi-zombie post-apocalypse, or in the twilight hours of an era of legendary mutants. The best part of this trope? You get two often contradictory character types in one body. The pessimist, PTSD-ridden master of old with no living friends left and at least one dead love interest *and* beneath all that, still lies an atrophied heart of gold just waiting to be nurtured and revived.

The naive ward gets a hard lesson in how crappy the world can be, but also in how there’s still some goodness left, if their guardian cares about them. The jaded badass in turn, learns how good the world can be, that there’s something still worth fighting for beyond the next bottom of a bottle.

6. The enemy of my enemy (is my friend)

Similar to the “old friends”, this trope is often a result of the minioned Big Bad realizing they don’t want to be evil anymore. Or, bitter old rivals, sides of a war that have been fighting for generations, ideological polar opposites, fundamental polar opposites all come together when: Some evil schmuck managed to scare them both.

Doesn’t matter on what shaky ground this temporary alliance is built, or how long it lasts, equally-competent badasses on both sides finally work together and compliment each other’s strengths, and compensate for their weaknesses, in a way their teammates never could.

7. The irredeemable villain’s only wholesome connection

Not so irredeemable anymore, now are they? This trope messes with your head, taking a character you know has done heinous acts of terror, but who cares unflinchingly, unabashedly, about one thing – either their lover, their pet, their relative, or their kid.

This exists independently of the heroes and is not the same as an “oops I guess I’m your father” reveal. I’m talking this character who everyone is convinced cares about nothing and no one but themselves and their ambition still has a place in their soul for something they want to protect, they want to be loved by, or that they must spare from their atrocities.

8. Platonic Heterosexual Friendships

These two have seen each other at their most vulnerable. They’ve shared fears, dreams, desires, know each other’s deepest, darkest secrets. They’ve seen each other exhausted, frazzled, dressed up, dressed down, bloodied and broken and like a raw, open nerve. These two would die for each other, they would live for each other, and yet.

They’re not in love with each other. They’re wholly comfortable in each other’s spaces without lust and desire mucking up the atmosphere. Neither is the one, neither wants to be the one. They remain together not for the bonds of romance, but for the bonds of friendship, and nothing could be stronger.

10. The Ace and their best friend, the Self-Proclaimed Slut

These two respect the f*ck out of each other. One never mocks the other for lacking desire and in return, they’re never mocked for their promiscuity. They’ll never walk in each other’s shoes, but they don’t need to, to understand that’s just how some people are. They’re each other’s safest spaces when the world doesn’t take either of them seriously.

They’re each other’s biggest defenders against the bullies, presumers, the holier-than-thous who think they have it all figured out. They’re the perfect compliment to give advice on everything from relationships to the best outfits for an outing because there’s *zero sexual tension* between them. Or, maybe, if the stars align, they’re something more.

10. The redeeming villain, and their staunchest skeptic

This villain has lost everything – their home, the respect of their people, their worth, their evil ambition, their identity, and has begun working their way up from rock bottom doing everything in their power to show the heroes that they’re serious. They make amends, they break their bones proving themselves, they’ve swayed everyone they’ve wronged in the hero camp.

Except one. The one character that was probably their first defender, and got burned for it. The character that was naive enough to think this villain could be saved, and was wrong. The character that won’t be duped again without some serious drama and soul-bearing between them.

Now tell me which ones I missed!

While I'm willing to give the live-action HTTYD a chance, I wish executives didn't play it safe and instead did spinoffs that do something new and exciting with it's world that helps expand it in the same vein as say Andor, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Better Call Saul, etc. How come they can't do that when it's a franchise with such potential for its world-building?

The Batter is obsessed with purification.

The only way I can see him being obsessed with someone in his world is if he views them as 'pure'.

Seeing his obsession as pure would make him want to protect them instead of subjecting them to his purification.

It is... strange that you would not be afraid of a being such as him.

Perhaps you simply do not see him as a threat yet.

To you, he is ridding this world of specters.

He's getting rid of ghosts, purifying the Zones.

That, or maybe you're simply not scared of him because he's on your side.

Maybe you're aware of his nature... and just choose to look away since he's so insistent on protecting you.

A selfish way or thinking... but even The Batter's goals are vague and selfish.

You are unaware of The Batter being a puppet.

Perhaps even blissfully unaware that some consider him a monster.

The world of OFF is strange.

It has elements that don't make sense and blinding colors.

Even you find the colors pretty... but The Batter claims they are unclean.

When it comes to you, The Batter forms a new goal.

He must keep you pure.

He doesn't quite act like a hero.

In fact, he's rather stoic, never trying to convince you of anything.

He tells you he needs you to make things pure.

Like the people who work with him, you go along with it.

There's something wrong with this place, after all.

It's hard to imagine that you wouldn't be afraid of him... not like he cares either way.

You find him strange, not entirely understanding his goals.

The only reason you might not fear him is if you believe his goal.

He must be doing the right thing...

After all, if he is...

You can overlook all the blood, right?

You can look away from the bleak white walls because The Batter says they're pure.

They're safer.

You try to ignore the monsters that now crawl around them.

Point is, I can only see his obsession not being scared if they chose to ignore what he does.

He's protecting you... He must be...

That's why there's so much blood on his monochrome bat...

The specters will be gone because of him...

You'll remain pure.

The Batter calling you pure may even encourage you to overlook things.

In that case... Then those he attacks must be impure...

You trust him... You trust him as he defends you...

You trust him and his touch....

But I feel you will hit your limit eventually.

The Batter isolates you, keeps you glued to his side as the smell of smoke permeates the air....

You are his to protect.

You are his.

Although, you begin wavering when The Batter brutalizes each guardian... then The Queen...

Then a child....

By the time The Judge steps in and fails...

By the time The Batter turns around to face you, bat in hand and glistening with red...

That's when you begin to fear.

The Batter intends to keep you to himself, to keep you pure...

Yet when he sees your fear, when he sees you in the bleakness of the white void...

He sees one last mission...

You must remain pure... and so he raises the bat once more.

Once again. It was just one more time, like all the others… but it was becoming hard to ignore. Ryohei was considered the scum of the Arisu family. He was tired of being subjected to responsibilities proposed by his father. He just wanted to live. Free.

Nagging and insults directed at him were part of his daily life but, more than tired, he was beginning to wonder if he was capable of changing. The last thing he wanted was to become his father's perfect puppet like his older brother, but it was almost inevitable that the thought of being accepted by his family crossed his mind.

And once again he was here, sitting on his couch playing a mini game on his cell phone while pretending not to hear the evil laughs of his father and brother and while they blatantly and unnecessarily talk bad about him.

“Congratulations on the promotion, my son! I'm glad you're the pride of the family... unlike your brother.” With a roll of his eyes, Ryohei takes out his mini game when he sees a message notification. Unconsciously a goofy smile graces his lips, almost like a natural instinct when it comes to her.

Y/n was definitely like a guardian angel to him, always showing up at the right times and offering support and quality time without wanting anything in return. For Ryohei, she was the most perfect. As promised, punctually and quickly, Ryohei arrived at the agreed location, a small bridge of tiled stones over a calm stream. They discovered this place by accident while running around late at night to forget their problems.

Y/n was sitting on top of the small wall of the bridge, facing the water, watching her feet moving to the rhythm of the water. Whenever Ryohei saw her, she seemed calm, almost unconcerned with life and that was one of the things that Ryohei most admired about her, her peace, her calm way of being. Perhaps part of the little peace that was in his being would be attributed to the time he spent together with her, her contagious laugh after telling a bad joke, her random late-night musings or when she would randomly text him asking if at any point in human history anyone had ever thought about drinking dog's milk. It's these little things that contribute to one of the few healthy relationships Ryohei had in his life.

Y/n removes the cherry lollipop that was in her mouth, opening a smile and waving at Ryohei's static presence. Awakening from her small reverie, Arisu smiles awkwardly at her, slowly walking towards her, her arms crossed in the cold draft.

“Look, the princess is punctual.” a low laugh emits from her, Ryohei rolling his eyes at the sarcasm.

“To get out of that place, even if I could fly, I would go as quickly as possible.” the expression on Y/n's face softened, understanding suddenly washing over her. With a sigh, his right hand touches Ryohei's left shoulder, who until then had been watching the water distractedly. “I feel sorry for them. Don't worry, one day they will see the same Ryohei I know and they will apologize for everything they said. You are incredible, don't let yourself be shaken by the words of people who only see their own nose. You are much more than that.”

A lone tear wets Ryohei's face and without hesitation Y/n reaches out her hands holding his face in her hands, wiping his tears as if she could touch the inside of his heart. Arisu's emotions were almost transparent around her and he didn't even understand why, but he felt like he needed to vent everything to her. A little hesitantly, almost afraid, he wrapped his arms around Y/n's shoulders, who without question quickly returned the hug. "I'm sorry-”

He quickly moves away from Y/n, wanting to slap himself if he crossed the boundaries of her personal space. “I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-”

“no. It’s okay, you know it is.” She gives him a sweet smile, the one that moves Arisu's insides. His cheeks heat up and he looks away from your face before his desire for your lips becomes obvious. Again she guides his face so he could finally face her. His eyes were twitching and she couldn't help but think how cute she thought he was and didn't really understand what his family's problem was with treating him like this.

“Thank you for trusting me with your problems, Ryohei. I feel happy that you trust me.”

“... I should be thanking you. You are always by my side, listening to my problems and comforting me when I need it most. Thank you. I really don’t know where I would be if I didn’t have you by my side.”

“You don’t need to say thank you, we’re friends, that’s what friends are for.” she responds by stroking the locks at the back of Ryohei's neck. Friends. She already does so much for him, would it be selfish of him to feel disappointed by such a term?

“Just know that I’m here for you too, y/n.” he replied with a sincere smile. Maybe the time isn't now, but he knew that one day he would be brave enough to let her know his true feelings. Until then, he would be happy to have more nights like this.

pt.1 - pt.2

Between all of the available options, the one person I think Commander Shepard would fall in love with the most—time after time after time, no matter if renegade or paragon—is the player.

In a self-aware kind of sense. Shepard knows you're there, felt your presence fade in the aftermath of the last battle in ME1, a part of themselves evaporating into thin air, an inexplicable feeling of losing something they can't being to describe. Like an invisible limb amputated in plain sight.

Everyone can see that, the way Shepard acts differently, lacking that defined edge that having your guidance during the game offered.

Only for your presence to re-materialise at the intro of ME2. Shepard felt your soul breathing life into their body again, but circumstances didn't allow the time to dwell on it nor question this rejuvenating limb they thought was long gone. They had to act fast and get everyone out of the ship. Even if it spelt their own demise, suffocating in the vacuum of space, they'd die peacefully knowing they're never truly alone, that they're whole again with you swimming through their veins.

Three years in a coma, on a deathbed, reconstructed from the atom up. Three years of having you by their side, a comforting presence that anchored Shepard and pieced together their sanity whilst the doctors pieced their physical mind. Three years passed in the blink of an eye for the player, but felt like an eternity for the commander you're puppeting around.

And just how attached Shepard would be to you, to the faint voice urging them towards certain dialogue options, the subtle nudges to move in certain directions, the twitch of their finger as if your hand is brushing against theirs to select a specific planet you had in mind on the galactic map.

They trudged through this journey filled with both unfamiliar faces and changed-beyond-recognition once familiar ones. Endured the hardships, the deception, the belittling, and dismissal attitude of the council. No matter how many people had gotten close to them, caressed their body, and shared their warmth, none of them could truly reach within Shepard's heart.

At first, they thought they were crazy. Maybe a screw or two were loose after the reconstruction surgery. Maybe the doctors did put them back wrong after all. For how could someone fall in love with themselves? And not even themselves but a very specific part of them, a vague presence constantly hovering around.

Shepard came to the revelation that you weren't part of them, not natively, at least. You were an outside influence, something—someone that held the potential to become part of them at given instances, only to depart just as suddenly, leaving them feeling hollow as their world becomes a little bit more cold and grey.

That realisation only served to further their infatuation, to resonate within their mind how justified their feelings are. It's not something they could explain. Where would they even begin? Who would believe them? They attempted to open their mind and allow Liara to peer through their consciousnesses countless times, and yet not once could the asari sense your presence. Nothing seemed out of place.

Miranda is not an option. The least Shepard needs, right now, is an overly concerned scientist coercing them into more experiments, brain scans, and psychological evaluations.

Leaving the more spiritual crew memebers as their only option... If only Ashley was here. Thane will have to do for now. As Shepard told him of their strife, the drell was surprisingly more accepting of their eccentric tale of love than they expected.

He confessed not to fully understanding what Shepard's going through. However, he does sincerely believe in the existence of outsider influence. souls which weave themselves into your own during times of need, in order to help guide and direct you towards the righteous path—guardian angels is what he described them as, described you, the player, as. Wisps that come and go as they please.

Not that you'd be aware of a single word said during this conversation, of course not. Much like the instances of Shepard showering, training, and getting a full night's rest, this conversation between them and the drell only occurred during the quiet hours of the universe. The ones when your game is turned off, leaving you oblivious to all the rather mundane aspects of this world.

Although, he did discourage his commander from perusing anything more than admiration with this said spirit, it's a one-sided relationship, as he explained best he could. You'll only see what the universe wants you to see, Shepard's growing infatuation is not one of them. Angels came and went, that is their nature.

Leaving Shepard back to where they started at square one, frustrated and indecisive on how to approach this, how to approach you. And now they're questioning if you'd even perceive their approach. Are you aware of their existence? Or are they presented to you by the universe as an empty canvas, devoid of personality and preferences.

For a first step, they needed to make sure you knew of their consciousness... easier said than done. They could hear your voice sometimes, never clear words, but more akin to background white noise. A distant humming while they slept, the faint sound of an airy laugh during a conversation with one of their crewmembers.

Do you hear them, too? Or do you only hear the words you make them say during important conversations? Phrases that suddenly pop into their mind out of nowhere, that seemed a little too perfect of a thoughtful response for them to having come up with it on the spot.

Shepard decided that there is no better way for them to prove their free will to you than to purposely go against your benevolent guidance. Not out of ungratefulness or annoyance, but just as a way to catch your attention, remind you that whilst you can give orders, at the end of the day, they're the actual person steering this ship around.

It's small things at first, wrong dialogue choices getting selected that have you questioning if you misclicked or something. Shepard selecting a different elevator floor from the one you initially picked. Your built-up romance with a specific character going down the drain as Shepard decides to reject them and end everything during the lock-in conversation, and no matter how many times you reload a savefile and carefully click on the correct dialogue choices, the words coming out of their mouth are always the same.

A bug, is the logical conclusion you first reached, what else would it be? Video game characters coming to life? Don't be absurd.

A fresh reinstall would do the trick.

Except... it persists.

The internet hasn't been helpful. No evidence of such a bug ever existing came up.

Hey! I just read and am really obsessed with the stuff you wrote about Bro a while ago. I'm a huge Bro fan and the stuff you've written is honestly my favorite! If you were to write more about Diederik, I would totally enjoy seeing it! Either way, thank you for writing it!

You find that Diederik is a very tactile person. Longing to touch and be touched like one needs air to breathe. As though being apart from you was suffocating, like a phantom pair of hands holding his lungs tight and only releasing when his skin met yours.

You weren't exactly being prevented from leaving, but Diederik kept pleading with you to stay. And you couldn't just leave Dave like this - he was only a kid, he shouldn't be left alone to be the only one to look after his emotionally vulnerable guardian. Diederik wasn't being violent, but he was clearly not in a good place. Some sort of breakdown, perhaps?

He refused, however, to go to the hospital. He flinched away at the idea of leaving the apartment.

“It was mostly him out there. I don't even remember what it was like before Cal anymore,” Diederik had pointed to the broken puppet. He refused to let anyone touch it. Too scared. “So, I think we should stay here. Where it's safe. Please.”

You felt compelled to stay longer. It was hard not to pity him. 

He doesn't let you leave his side, following you around like a puppy. Even just a few moments in separate rooms leaves Diederik anxious. It makes it hard to get some time alone with Dave to offer comfort or try to formulate some sort of plan. You notice that when Dave isn't switching between talking with you or staring at his brother and the broken puppet, he disappears into his room for some amount of time. Maybe you could talk there? Or maybe he has a phone? 

But, first you had to deal with Diederik. 

His body stretches over the couch as he rests his head in your lap. His hair pools over your knees. You don't know when he last slept, but it had to have been before you had broken the doll. Even now, the man still fights the siren song of slumber. He blinks his eyes wearily, shaking his head. And all the while, he never looks away from you.

You card your fingers through his hair as he looks up at you. His eyes are a burnt orange. They bore into you, searing deep into your flesh like the desert sun. He holds you in his gaze like you're something important, like you're the entire world. You remember what he said, about barely being a person because of that puppet. Maybe, right now, you are his entire world.

You play with Diederik's hair and talk to him softly until he eventually falls asleep. You can at least give him this.
