Something about the idea that the anime names Ken as the fifth ex, and that he’s presented as the chiller/more mature of the twins (Kyle goes and taunts Ramona on the balcony, is the one to actually call her a slut, etc.), meaning that yeah maybe he was a player, but maybe he was also more willing to let that relationship grow. And the fact that he’s the one who gestures to Ramona (in her flashback in the last episode) rather than being mad at his twin seems less like it was a desperate attempt to blame her, and more of a “How could you date the girl I actually liked?”

So... mostly through the process of working on my 'Ask IRL Ramona' Blog, I've been able to skate through and answer questions using the people I'm friends with who cosplay characters from Scott Pilgrim making guest appearances as needed.

Well.

Now it's happened.

One of the few times I need to openly call out to the abyss of tumblr and ask for it's aid.

Someone has asked a question relating to the Twins. I know no one who actively cosplays them. If anyone out there who does, or knows anyone who'd be down with it, I'd love to include them in an answer on my blog. ;^; <3

Okay so like I love SPTO do not get me wrong but I’m still so annoyed that the twins are just…the twins. Like in a series where every other character got so much personality and time and exciting new dynamics, the twins are still just filler for the league. They don’t even bother to really make them different people, which at least the comics did. How did their robot have more personality than them?? And so not a fan of how their work and their future lives were mostly just a vessel for Future Scott and his drama. That just felt cheap.

not to talk about ramona again but i find it so fucking important the dichotomy of how the exes view ramona vs. how scott does. it's mainly about how scott doesn't. blame her? for leaving? like. of course he wants her to stay because he loves her but like. the exes blame her.

yes, some of them are her fault. there's no denying that. but specifically gideon saying that it was her fault and scott rebuking him is. it's something that can be so personal. the twins call her a two-timing slut. roxie thinks that ramona can do better than scott. matthew was used, but also it was seventh grade! let it fucking go dude! no one cna say that they were a paragon of virtue in seventh grade

idk it just. it makes me weep that scott still treats her like a person even with her flaws. it's so important to me. it's so fucking important to me. i'm sorry you think your ex-girlfriend is a manic pixie dream girl why don't you get fucked.

Day 17 of Fictional Band February: SPECIAL EDITION: Sex Bob-omb and the Katayanagi Twins

So, Sex Bob-Omb and the Katayanagi Twins are from Bryan Lee O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim series.  I'm going to focus on the movie adaptation directed by Edgar Wright though, because the Twins were not musicians in the books - but roboticists!

First up, there's Sex Bob-omb

They're a garage band-y trio made of Stephen Stills (guitar), Kim Pine (drums) and Scott Pilgrim (bass).  Mostly they're just having fun, but they still wouldn't mind getting famous.  Especially Stills.  Their songs were written by Beck and performed by Mark Webber (Stephen), Alison Pill (Kim), and Michael Cera (Scott).  Well, except for the last one, with Johnny Simmons (Young Neil) on bass instead.  But I'm getting ahead of myself!  All of Sex Bob-omb's songs are a lot of fun and I listen to them regularly.  They don't have a single bad song.

So then, there are the Katayanagi Twins

Ramona Flowers' dated Kyle and Ken Katayanagi - at the same time! - who are pretty rad keyboard players.  In real life, Japanese musician Cornelius composed their music.  Kyle and Ken were played by actual twins Keita and Shota Saito!

Then this happens

It's a great scene (but what in the movie isn't???) with fantastic music.  So, that's the song I chose for today - Katayanagi Twins vs. Sex Bob-omb.  It isn't quite the same without the visual, but still awesome!

There are two other fake bands in the movie: Crash and the Boys and the Clash and Demonhead.  I love a lot of things about Scott Pilgrim but the high number of fake bands is one of the biggest reasons for me.  And the music is good, too!

This here almost feels like more of Malley's more realistic style he's used outside of Pilgrim, and it's interesting to me to see this style used for the Katayanagi's given how they're one of the few exes who actually seem to be in control up until their defeat. Neat.
