this whole “you’re too old to be in fandom!” reminds me of how toxic it’s gotten on stan twitter, it’s one of the reasons I left kpop twt— I would be shouted at by teenagers and told to go to a nursing home for being in my late twenties (I’m 31 now), that kpop wasn’t for haha like me. Babes, the “boys” in the group I like are all in their 30s like me. And even if I liked one of the newer groups with the members being in their 20s, how is that a bad thing?

The mindset that not only are we “too old” in our 20s, 30s, whatever, is so gross because not only are you gatekeeping people who are the backbone of the fandoms you love, but you’re putting a time-bomb on your own enjoyment of things— and how is that helpful to anyone?

Let people enjoy things, especially if it doesn’t harm anyone else. I’m not talking about bringing NSFW art/work into children’s spaces, that’s a whole issue on its own, but if we’re in our 30s, 40s+ and we want to enjoy kpop, or johnlock, and we’re not being gross about it or hurting anyone, then leave it be?

There’s a weirdly puritanical, pro-youth anti-aging movement with this new generation of young teenagers and it’s militant and upsetting.

it *is* upsetting: where are these kids getting all this bitterness from? idk about you all (please feel free to chime in), but I don't recall myself having this mindset, not even remotely, when i was their age (for the record, i'm 36). Like, I was in a gaming club, and on online forums, and in music circles... and it was people of ALL ages! And I looked up to them! And we all had fun??!

The funny thing is, that the whole thread didn't even start on the topic of "fandom mums". I screenshotted *that* comment because it was a nasty one, but I wasn't defending "mums" in particular. Hell, I'm not even a mum irl!! It was *them* getting defensive and bringing it to the table - all the while, not realizing that it's them acting like grumpy, "get off my lawn" old buggers.

I think I've been gracious enough, I even tried to start a conversation about the actual topic at hand - but i won't restrain myself if I have to tell someone they're being arrogant gatekeepers. I can't stand that attitude; sorry, not sorry. Yes, I enjoy fanfiction/shipping and a million other things, online and offline. And if I'm being called "cringe" or a "loser" 'cause of it... so be it. They don't seem to get that petty insults won't win you an argument; you have to actually hold it. And that they're dealing with people (e.g. me) who GREW UP dealing with trolls and flames. Dude, you can't win, it's a law of nature.

Anyway - I digress. Agree 100%, there is no expiration date on things you enjoy. As I said in another post, let's sit on the river bank and see where they'll be at in 15-20 years (i really, really hope they'll come 'round).
