Aerosmith was one of the biggest rock bands in the world in the ‘70s. However, things weren’t all sunshine and rainbows behind the scenes. Guitarist Joe Perry and frontman Steven Tyler clashed so often that their bandmates called them the “Toxic Twins.” Additionally, substance abuse was rampant in the band and Perry was dealing with some personal issues. Those things were almost enough to make him walk away from the band he helped start. Then, he heard the future of rock ‘n’ roll and knew it was time to step down.
In a recent interview with Guitar World, Perry revealed that several things led to his leaving the band in the middle of recording the 1979 album Night in the Ruts. Among those was his realization that Aerosmith wasn’t ready to deal with the rapidly changing musical landscape.
“I just had to take care of myself. My personal life wasn’t all that great, and I had to deal with that,” Perry recalled. “I had to come to terms with that and knew it was time to leave. But I also felt we needed to be more open to new ideas,” he added.
“We were rolling into the ‘80s, and I still remember hearing the first Van Halen record and fucking loving it. I mean, what a great fucking record,” Perry said. More than anything, Eddie Van Halen’s guitar playing made him realize that the musical world was changing. About that, he said, “Eddie’s guitar playing was just so incredible. He turned the guitar on its fucking ear and was doing stuff that I’d never heard before. I knew it was time for a break because new ideas were needed.”
After hearing Van Halen’s debut record, Perry realized that Aerosmith wasn’t ready for the ‘80s rock scene. “It was just a vibe or feeling I had,” he recalled.
After leaving Aerosmith, the guitarist started a solo career with The Joe Perry Project. However, it didn’t take long for Perry to reconsider. In 1982 he rejoined the band. As a result, they saw a resurgence in popularity in the late ’80s that continued until the early 2000s.

Remembering Danny Hargrove 1958-2024
Sad news this past week that musician Danny Hargrove has died at 65. Normally when I write an obit (unless it's someone I knew or was an expert in), I share an obit that's in the press and add my thoughts. There hasn't really been much in the press with the exception of Medico Topics, but I feel he deserves a proper tribute.
Joe Perry Project circa 1983 Cowboy Mach Bell with Joe Perry (second from left), Danny Hargrove, and Joe Pet
When Joe Perry left Aerosmith in 1979, he formed the Joe Perry Project, who put out three solid albums between 1980 and 1983 each with a different lineup. After Perry re-joined Aerosmith in 1984, he has released some solo and Joe Perry Project albums as well. The third album they released was 1983's Once a Rocker, Always a Rocker, where Perry was joined by drummer Joe Pet, singer Cowboy Mach Bell (who I interviewed at the 2022 Collectibles Extravaganza in 2022) and bassist Danny Hargrove. That was one of my favorite JPP albums and Danny deserves credit for his contribution to that album. Hargrove was a part of the line-up from 1982-1984. JPP doesn't get nearly enough credit, but they had some solid albums, Once a Rocker... being one of my faves.
Hargrove and Perry circa 1983
In addition to JPP, he also played in Rage, The Wild Bunch, and The Screwballs. My thoughts go out to Mach Bell, Joe Pet, Joanne Codi, Hal Lebeau Boudreaux all of whom posted tributes on social media, and of course Mr. Perry.
For further info on Mr. Hargrove see Cowboy Mach Bell's tribute

I’m heartbroken over the loss of Matthew Perry. But I’m seeing so many posts about him in Friends and not enough of his other awesome projects. 4 of his characters are in my list of comfort shows. I’ve been through so much, and watching my comfort shows with him, has been with me through those times.
Here are some other great roles I love him in.
Matt Albie - Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip
My favorite show he’s in by far. If you haven’t seen it you should find it and watch it! It’s only one season, but it’s soooo worth it. I don’t think it’s streaming anywhere without buying it, but if you’re talented enough you can find it elsewhere.
Joe Quincy - The West Wing
Just a fantastic show. Please watch it! It’s on Max.
The Good Wife and The Good Fight - Mike Kresteva
Two great shows!! And Mike is a fun character.
Fools Rush In - Alex Whitman
Romantic comedy. Very good! I’m not sure where/if it streams. I haven’t watched it in a while but it was always a favorite.
Three To Tango - Oscar Novack
Such a good movie! Funny funny and a great cast!
Ally McBeal - Todd Merrick
It’s a short guest spot for him, but he is great! Plus, it’s one of my top 5 shows and simply wonderful and fun.
Matthew Perry - Studio 60
Obviously, these are not all of his roles, but they’re among my favorites. He deserves to be remembered for his roles outside of Friends. I truly hope you check some of these out, because he was so great in everything he did.
