Day 36: Favourite BL parents/parental figures?

Mr. and Mrs. Kirigun from TharnType the Series/Tharntype 2. I actually loved Tharn's family unit as a whole but I loved his parents, especially in s2. In s1 we got more of Tharn's brother Thorn being a staple but in s2 his parents really shined for me. They always offered Tharn sound advice and pulled from their own experiences as a couple and they treated Type like an actual son. They loved them both together and separately and when Type was beefing with his hubby he was at his in-law's house getting advice from them. He was invited to all the family events and treated as part of the family. They welcomed Type with open arms and helped guide them along the way. I was so happy to see them present for Type's monkhood ceremony. They were never pushy or overbearing just a happy and loving set of parents.

Pete's Dad and Kao's Mom from Dark Blue Kiss. OMG when Pete's dad found out about them I was so terrified because he looked like such a hard ass but he welcomed Kao with open arms. And even though he was hard on Pete about his academics, he was always ready to talk with his son about his relationship problems. He was happy to offer advice to both Pete and Kao not to mention he was always advocating for them to have safe sex. Kao's mom was so patient with her son's coming out. She knew PeteKao were a thing but she didn't push the issue or force him to tell her. She waited patiently and quietly for him to come to her. She protected her son against her trash boss and his son. And she was just always there ready to catch Kao when he fell. Also she really treated Pete like a 2nd son. Both their parents were sweet and loving people.

Leila Lazaro from Gameboys. Listen, I fucking ADORE Leila. She was such a good mom to Cairo. She seemed to have her hangups when Cai came out but she never blamed him for anything that happened even when he blamed himself. She always took accountability for making her son feel alienated in his own home. She sincerely apologized to him and helped him when he was having problems or doubts regarding his relationship with Gav. She allowed her son to temporarily live with Gav so that they could strengthen their relationship and spend more time together before he ultimately had to move out of the city. She gave him room to grow and love and was always there behind him. She was a support pillar in such a new stage in his life. She cried and shared her deepest worries with him. They bonded over their grief and love. They had a beautiful relationship.

Uncle Cheep and Uncle Dej from My Ride. Mork's uncles were gifts from the universe. They didn't even do anything special. They came as their authentic quasi-messy selves. They were there to pick up the pieces of Mork when his trifling girlfriend ditched him. They were there to encourage him to explore his feelings for Dr. Tawan. They gave him sound advice and answered his questions with patience and understanding. They showed Mork what it's like to really love someone. They showed him what family was. They showed him what sacrifice was. They were just two shining examples of where Mork wanted to be later on in life. Sure they had their hangups but they took care of each other and Mork.

Sippakorn and Jaonan from Ai Long Nhai. I don't remember much about Ai Long Nhai but I remember Aiyaret's dads! They showed up and showed out for Ai when his mother basically abandoned him. They raised an intelligent but cheeky son. Sippakorn kept Ai disciplined while Jaonan was a bit softer on him. But I love that Jaonan was the first to knock someone out for even coming at his son wrong. He was so protective of Ai especially when Ai's mother started coming around again. He knew she was up to no good. Also loved seeing a bit of romance between Ai's dad's and I loved watching them tag team parent Ai. They were wholesome.

Ama from Jack & Joker. Def the best Granny I've seen so far this year (and we've had a lot). She's such a strong driving force behind Jack. She's his fucking rock. She stands behind Jack and supports every decision he makes but she's also going to tell Jack when he's being a complete moron. And she's not just there for Jack, she becomes a Granny to everyone who needs her. She's adopted all the neighborhood kids, Save, and now Joke. Joke sees her as more of a parent than his own. She taught him how to cook and welcomed him with open arms. She even played a huge part in Jack and Joke's reconciliation. She's the sweetest, kindest, sassiest woman who's heart is truly her strongest muscle.

Ahaha, wow, my anons are pulling in my mutuals? Again? My life is wild here, y'all. Yay Battle Royale Anon! How did you know I have time to kill before Golden Blood?

Also, this one is fascinating because how does one define uke? Because some of these characters might be bottoms but I wouldn't define them as ukes because ukes are typically the ones being pursued. So I've sort of been trying to figure that out and so some of these get some odd answers depending on the character. Is an uke defined as what most straight girls think of a bottom? Is an uke the character being pursued or who needs to be taken care of?

... Look, uke is an ever-evolving word, especially from when I first joined fandom. So it's very interesting!

Taekyung vs. Adachi

Adachi has to win this. I love Taekyung to death and he's my tiny gaybie but Adachi just... he's darling and small and he needs to be protected and pursued and he just... fits more of what I think of as an uke. Now, this is probably because this is a Japan (creator of the uke/seme dynamic as we know it) versus Korea (who really don't do strong seme/uke dynamics) thing rather than a character thing. Since uke really is in the relationship and not just the character...

Sky (GB) vs. Tae Joo (Eyes Linger)

It's Sky. Sky is a baby. Sky is absolutely baby. He's in need of so much love and care and protection. Although Tae Joo is close and he definitely needs it, it's in a different way. Plus, Sun is gonna take a bullet for Sky and I am an absolute sucker for that. But they're such good characters to contrast.

Pi vs. Gene

I gotta admit that I'm giving this to Gene. Now, this is because of the show. I want Gene to be taken care of by his love. I want Nubsib to love and care for Gene. I don't want Pi to be take care of. I want Pi to go be independent and pissy somewhere else without ever thinking about Mork again.

Tian vs. Pharm

Pharm had to win this. I love Tian, don't get me wrong. But Tian and Phupha have a different dynamics than Dean and Pharm. Dean and Pharm definitely lean more towards what I would consider a seme/uke relationship and, thus, Pharm wins. Also, tiny gaybie Pharm almost always wins.

ShuYi vs. Shi Lei

This is so interesting because it's Taiwan vs Taiwan and they don't do the really strong seme/uke... but yeah, it's Shu Yi. Shu Yi 100%. Shi Lei is an uke but he's not as much of one as Shu Yi. Shu Yi is such a darling who just needs so much love.

Zhao Zi vs. Si Qi

It's Zhao Zi. Look, I adore Si Qi. He's a darling. But Zhao Zi is just gaybie energy x100 alongside abandonment issues and that sunshine over sadness energy is just A+.

Meen vs. Tine

This one is hard. They're both such ukes, such little gaybies... But I like Meen more, so I'm going with him. He was the bright spot in the show where Tine was, ironically, one of my least favorite characters in his show.

Jin vs. Arthit

I had to give this to Jin. He just loved being pursued so much and all the attention and the little gifts from Bbomb just made him so happy. He couldn't help himself. Arthit just didn't quite have that with Kongpob, as much as I love them together. Different vibes.

Kit (Gen Y) vs. Wad (SOTUS S)

Kit is basically the perfect example of a tsundere uke. Like, he is the platonic (lol) ideal. And I love him for that so much. He's definitely one of my favorite characters just in general and such a little tsundere uke he has to win.

Karl vs. Gavreel

This one is a bit harder. Ugh. Like, you could claim it for either one and also argue that neither one is exactly an uke... but I'm gonna give it to Gavreel. Mostly for levels of realism. Karl is just so realistic it's hard to call him an uke.

Tutor vs. Knock

Yeah, it's Tutor. He was tough as nails but he melted so nicely under Fighter's hands and just falls apart and gets sick without him and that's just... such an uke thing, okay? SUCH an uke thing.

Mico vs. Jaime

I had to go with Mico. I love Mico. He's such a darling and absolutely radiates gaybie in need of love energy at all times and I still desperately wish that Hello Stranger the movie had given him more of a chance at the end rather than a rush.

Reb vs. Jim

... It's Reb because Jim just annoyed me mostly. Also, Reb is tiny and adorable and has that super innocent gaybie energy that makes him a bit more real but also a bit more uke. I dunno, this is what I mean about the definition of uke. It's hard to pin down for me!

Tong vs. Folk

Look, I get it, I'm the only person who preferred IttPai to PureFolk. I GET IT. But that just means I'm gonna pick Tong because PokTong was the best pairing beside MarkKit and also holy shit sex and holy shit the love they share that they damaged and hurt so much together... ugh, uke energy be damned, I'm choosing my favorite.

Paii vs. Wayo (2moons2)

Yo is ultimate uke. He's such an uke is almost hurts. Like, he always wins this. Every time. No question or hesitation.

Beam vs. Kit (Both 2moons2)

Kit wins again. Because Kit is a tsundere uke and, frankly, 2moons2 Kit is even MORE of the perfect tsundere uke because he also melts. He melts so hard and so fast and it's adorable beyond belief.

Mon vs. Shi Gu

Sorry, Shi Gu, but Mon is such an uke. Like holy sheesh this boy. This most darling boy. He's tiny and gaybie and adorable and PORTABLE and yeah, he's super uke.

Chon vs. Mes

I'm gonna give it to Chon because he's just... a bit more? To me. He's more of an uke and I love him for it. Tough as nails uke boy with a lot of of darlingness. Yeah, just gotta go with my heart.

Masuk vs. Nuea

I might like Nuea more but I think Masuk has more uke vibes. They're still weak but they're there and I just gotta give it to my darling Masuk. He's so soft and needs so much love and a lot of care.

King vs. Third

Third is ultimate uke. Crying in a shower? Weeping over everything? Very protective friends? Yeah. YEAH. He wins this.

Puth vs. Boss (My Engineer)

Puth just isn't an uke to me. He's got different vibes. But Boss? Boss is an uke and adorable and he just wants to finally love Mek openly and honestly and just be held and goofy and ride on his back. And seriously, love the boy.

Kao (DBK) vs. Kao (Oxygen)

Ugh, this is hard because I'm not 100% on how much an uke Kao (Oxygen) is and I don't really think about DBK ever... I'll give it to Oxygen. I love Oxygen and I miss Kao.

Chol vs. Xingsi

Xingsi wings this by being the most take over uke ever, the one who definitely wants to be spoiled but also knows exactly how he wants to be spoiled and isn't afraid to show it. Gotta love him.

Mu Ren vs. Yu Hao (Crossing the Line)

I gotta give this to MuRen. CTL had almost no seme/uke energy but they definitely went harder in CTY. So... MuRen wins by virtue

I had to go with Yeon Woo. Like, I had to. What a darling little uke who needed to be chased and needed to be convinced and needed to be saved from himself and the other people who love him.

Hin (Chance to Love) vs. Hin (Lovely Writer)

Lol, I had to go with Chance to Love because, like, look at that boy. He gave up everything in the hopes that his seme would be happy and just... what a tiny darling. Sadly, Hin didn't get any romance. So... outta luck, child.

Aey vs. Yi Chen (Obsessed)

Obsessed is just all about the seme/uke dynamic. I had to give it to Yi Chen. Like, had to. Absolutely had to.

Pao vs. Ake

Neither are my favorites but I have to give the uke energy to Pao. Ake is adorable and all but Pao just radiates that 'I'm a baby take care of me' energy, especially as a ghost.

Phai (Gen Y) vs. Wayu (Gen Y)

Yu is the most uke uke to ever uke. Seriously. What a baby. And he's such an uke he has two semes fighting over him! You can't get much more uke than that, let's be honest.

Day (Sotus S) vs. Zon (WhyRU)

Look, I gotta be honest, I mostly just watch the Kongpob and Arthit scenes of SOTUS S. But also... Zon. Zon is puppy uke. He is tiny, tiny puppy uke and I cannot deny him that title. He deserves it.

Typhoon vs. Mekhin (Close Friend)

I gotta give it to Typhoon. I still don't like that part very much and I just want to protect him from his boyfriend ignoring him and I think part of that is what makes him such an uke. I just want to protect him so badly.

Team vs. In

In's not an uke to me. But Team? I'm good with that. I can handle it. And he needs that care and that love. Also, as I say every time... Between Us must exist!

Guitar vs. Ray (Close Friend)

Gui beats Ray by a hair. BARELY at all. But I just love Gui and his darling softness and just his everything... Ugh, Gui definitely has uke energy.

Type (2gether) vs. Sang Ha (Mr. Heart)

I gotta go with SangHa. What a darling boy. Type is great and all but their relationship is much more equal than anything else. And SangHa is just... this boy who needs to be loved and cared for and then to run alongside his boyfriend.

Sheng Zhe (Right or Wrong) vs. Shao Fei

I gotta give it to Sheng Zhe. I love Shao Fei deeply but Sheng Zhe wins in terms of uke. Like, he's darling and family and sweet and full of love and I love him so much I cannot even.

Frong vs. Duen

Duen gets it, even if I view him as entire asexual and, frankly, more than a bit aromantic. I genuinely think he dislikes being in a committed relationship. But... uke energy? Yeah, he gives out more than Frong.

King vs. Sky (My Day)

King is way more uke than Sky because Sky isn't uke at all. My Day was amazing for having such no seme/uke dynamic, yo. But King? Yeah, he's got that energy with Ram.

Ou Wen vs. Minh Hoang

I'm gonna give this to Minh Hoang. Because Ou Wen isn't uke energy for me. But Minh Hoang has some. Neither of these shows really does the seme/uke energy, honestly. But I can lean a bit more towards Minh Hoang.

Can vs. Techno

I'm giving it to Can despite the unconventional nature of his relationship with Tin and the maturity they show through the show. But I love Can and the want to care for him and I want to protect him. And the more I want to protect a character, the more I go with uke. (Not that I'm a seme, I'm just a sunshine puppy disguised as a person.)

Yu Zhen vs. Bunn

I feel weird but I'm definitely giving it to Yu Zhen. I gotta. I can't help myself. He's such a darling young man who just needs to be taken care of by Shi Lei on every possible level. I mean, boy still doesn't know not to eat gummies. Seriously.

Bonus: (Ga On vs. Da On)

I have to give this to DaOn. I can't help myself. I get the same energy from Ga On but DaOn just sends me away with the need to protect him, seriously.

1. would it even be a post by me about anything if i didn’t mention dark blue kiss? yes, that show does stress me out but there are such wonderful and tender moments that truly mean so much to every lgbt person out there, especially asian lgbt people. the quiet love in every frame, the way all the friendships and family relationships are fleshed out, the unrelenting support... not to mention pete and kao talking about the future, their families, their sexuality, getting married, and then sun and mork running a café together and falling in love over coffee... i could talk about this show for ages. for ages! even when it gets angsty, it’s still so viscerally relatable that it hurts. it’s different, isn’t it? when lgbt people are written by an lgbt person? the warmth that echoes through this show is resounding. it’s astounding how much i love it, how much it calms me down, how safe i feel once going back to it after a long day and seeing them grow together.

2. of course we have to mention still2gether! more so than 2gether, this is the one that makes me feel all safe and warm inside. just like dark blue kiss, it was directed by p’aof, and is one of the most wonderful shows i have watched! all the unlikely little friendships sprouting up! the love! the romance! the domesticity! the hilarity! all of it culminates into a wonderful little special show that i looked forward to every week and that just kept getting better. how sweet!

3. kinou nani tabeta! i will never get tired of mentioning this show, it’s so underrated. the growth of these two middle aged gay men over food and dinner as they navigate coming out and taking pride in themselves is so lovely. it’s such a quiet little show, tucked away into a corner, and yet so evocative. i adore shiro’s growth, i love how much kenji adores him, and the general premise of this show is fantastic. it’s like a hug, honestly. also? SO funny! that scene of shiro screaming he’s gay at his neighbour lives rent free in my head.

4. y’all don’t even know this one but made in heaven. this show is STRESSFUL but also... there are so many golden moments that make it so lovely to rewatch, as bittersweet as it is. it’s one of my most favourite shows and so underrated! karan and tara’s friendship is so so lovely, and seeing them getting their wedding business started as different parts of india are represented through them and criticised is so necessary and fresh. also... karan and nawab...... the fleeting moments of happiness we get from them....... made in heaven s2 when please...

5. and right now? gaya sa pelikula. i have waxed so much poetic about this show and so has everyone else. everything means something, everything is written so well, and even deep conversations handling heavy issues are dealt with such care and love that it absolutely shines through the show. this is the result, really, when you let lgbt people write lgbt characters. i cried at vlad and karl dancing to ride home by ben&ben, one of my comfort songs, and i cried seeing gege (juan miguel severo, the writer) say that the latest episode was dedicated to every lgbt person who stopped dancing when someone opened the door. because that’s me, and i feel so seen in this show. and not to forget - it’s SO funny. “jesus is way too forgiving to be a capricorn” lmao BYE vlad.

Ficlet: Night Darkness

Dark Blue Kiss. PeteKao. For @inlovewithjdramas who wanted a fic about Pete having nightmares about his mother and his sister dying. It turned out mushier than expected.

Pete hates lies and yet, here he is, lying.

🌛🌛🌛

“Pete…?”

“Pete....!”

“Pete, wake up!”

Pete jerks awake, his eyes snapping open. It’s dark, the dawn still hours away, and he’s in their bedroom, in their bed... and there’s Kao next to him, one hand touching Pete’s shoulder.

Slowly, Pete turns his head to the right, towards Kao, who’s lying curled up on his left side, head pillowed on his bent arm. Pete’s heart, galloping away wildly, driven to madness by the remnants of adrenaline that still make his toes tingle a little, skips a beat. But this time in joy. Because, yes, Kao’s here again. With him again. Good. That’s good.

“You had a bad dream again,” Kao whispers and lifts his hand off Pete’s shoulder to stroke Pete’s cheek. His fingertips rasp against Pete’s uneven stubble. What a pleasure.

Pete hums, not looking away from Kao. Even in this darkness, Kao’s eyes still glitter a little, somehow. A mystery, this. Kao has such beautiful eyes, his Kao has, yes.

“What did you dream about?” Kao asks, letting Pete know that he’s willing to listen if Pete’s willing to talk. He leaves his hand resting against Pete’s cheek. Pete snuggles into Kao’s palm, just a little.

Is Pete willing to talk? He’s not sure. But Kao deserves an explanation. This is the third time this week, the third time that he woke Kao up in the middle of the night. He sighs. “I dreamed of my mom and my sister,” he confesses honestly and with a heavy heart.

They died, his mother and his younger sister. His mom a long time ago, stolen away by a terrible disease. His sister just a few years back, fallen victim to a car accident. They both died and left him and his dad alone. So much grief.

“I’m sorry,” Kao says, running his thumb across Pete’s cheekbone in comfort. Kao’s father died many years ago so Kao knows what it’s like to lose a parent. And his empathy - sometimes too deep for his own good - makes it so easy to feel for others. “What brought it up now?” 

Good question. Pete knows the answer but he won’t tell. Because it was their break-up, the loss of Kao, that brought it all up, those issues that Pete thought dealt with, his fear of abandonment. So much fear at the root of so many of his issues, he knows.

But he can’t tell that to Kao. He doesn’t want to tell Kao. Because he doesn’t want Kao to feel guilty. Kao’s very good at feeling guilty. And worried. And sad for others. Pete doesn’t want Kao to feel sad ever again. Not on his behalf, not on anyone else’s. 

So he lies, “I don’t know.”

Kao pauses. Maybe he hears the lie in Pete’s words, in his voice. Pete hates lies and yet, here he is, lying. Yeah, he’s odd like that, he shrugs in the privacy of his own mind. But his need to not make Kao sad is much stronger than his need to be truthful, always and at all cost. For Kao, anything.

“What can I do?” Kao asks after a moment.

“Would you come with me to the temple tomorrow? To make merit?” Pete asks. He has no idea where this request came from. But it feels right. He hasn’t been to the temple for a very long time. It makes him feel a little ashamed, a little guilty.

Kao smiles. Pete knows it, he can hear Kao’s smile in his voice when he says, “Of course, I would be honored.”

Pete smiles too. Yes, they will go together. It does feel right and it makes his heart feel lighter. 

“And can I do anything right now?” Kao asks.

Pete’s smile widens a little and for a moment, he feels the urge to turn Kao’s heartfelt offer into something lecherous just to hear Kao’s voice turn all squeaky with embarrassment - Pete’s very proud of himself for still being able to make Kao blush, even three years into their relationship.

But then he pushes that impulse down firmly and asks instead, “Can I hold you?” Because that’s what he really needs right now, to hold Kao, to feel him.

Without hesitation, Kao scoots closer. He rests his head against Pete’s shoulder and he throws one arm across Pete’s stomach and one leg across Pete’s thighs, making his lover bear his weight and feel his nearness, almost blanketing him. 

Pete wraps his right arm around Kao’s shoulders to pull him closer still and he strokes Kao’s arm, the one lying across Pete’s stomach, with his free hand, up and down, up and down, slowly and tenderly. Kissing the top of Kao’s head, he whispers, “Thank you.”

“For what?” Kao asks with a smile in his voice again. 

“For being you.”

They sleep.

Clear Blue Skies - The Talk

Because PeteKao are ruining me already and slowly pulling me back into writing, here’s my take on the pool scene and their talk in episode 2.

‘I’m so stupid’, thinks Kao, remembering what he told Pete while they were fighting. Although he believes Pete was being unreasonable in his request, he hates that he went there and brought up the subject of Pete’s complicated relationship with his father. ‘Way to be a good boyfriend’, he thinks to himself. 

He had realized his mistake as soon as he saw Pete’s face fall right after Kao had blamed his father’s lack of trust on his immaturity and selfishness. Pete had taken a small step back, as though he had been hit, and his small ‘Kao’ had made the hurt and disbelief Pete was feeling clear as day. 

After that, he had quickly left, and Kao hadn’t tried to hold him back, knowing that they both needed some time to cool off. 

‘I can be such an asshole,’ he thinks to himself a couple hours after the fight, as he is taking another look at his boyfriend that is currently sitting alone in front of his father’s pool.

Kao quietly makes his way up to Pete, and sits silently next to him. He knows that Pete is aware of his presence by the way his shoulders tense a little, but he doesn’t do anything to acknowledge him and something tugs in Kao’s stomach. He hates fighting with Pete. After two years, they’ve obviously had many disagreements and a few knockout fights, but he always feels so off kilter after, and he hates the nasty feeling he gets in his stomach because of them.

They both sit silently for a couple minutes, Kao studying the side of Pete’s face and trying to get him to look his way, although Pete remains unmoving. 

He knows that he hurt Pete’s feelings with his comment. He could read it on his face right away, and it’s clear now by the downturn of Pete’s mouth and the wetness that Kao can still discern shining in the boy’s eyes. 

He had regretted the words the moment they left his mouth. Although he can admit that it was partly true and that Pete was being unreasonable during their talk, he regrets having brought up the subject knowing how Pete would feel after.

His boyfriend had really opened up to him a couple of nights ago. He had told him how worthless he often felt when surrounded by his father’s rich friend’s and their sons, and in spite of how happy Kao had been to see his closed off boyfriend open up to him, he he had just used that moment of vulnerability to throw Pete’s insecurities back in his face. 

He knows he shouldn’t have said what he said, but he had just been so frustrated with Pete trying to buy him and telling him who he should and shouldn’t tutor. He hates how jealous Pete sometimes gets, and he just wishes the other boy could see himself through Kao’s eyes. Wishes he could understand how he has absolutely nothing to worry about. 

Still, he can’t get the hurt look on Pete’s face when he made that comment out of his head, and he knows he needs to fix the situation before it keeps hurting the both of them. 

After a couple minutes of silence, Kao tries to reach out to Pete by putting his hand on his shoulder, but his boyfriend shrugs him off, sitting a little further away from him and still looking into the swimming pool in front of him instead of turning towards him. Ignoring the sting of hurt at his boyfriend’s rejection, Kao takes a deep breath and shoulders on. 

‘I’m sorry for what I said about your father,’ he says, trying to get Pete to look him in the eyes. ‘I was mad, and I was frustrated, but that’s no excuse. I don’t think you’re selfish, and I shouldn’t have thrown that in your face.’

Pete remains silent, and Kao worries his lip with his teeth. The boy is usually never silent for this long. Pete will sulk, he will argue back and act petulant, he will whine and complain when he’s mad, but he almost never gives Kao the silent treatment, and Kao knows he must have really crossed a line. The still and silent way he is holding himself right now doesn’t sit well with him.

‘Pete. Please, talk to me. I hate it when we fight,’ Kao tries again, feeling worry grow within him. He reaches his hand towards Pete’s arm again and squeezes, bracing himself for rejection.

Although Pete stays still and doesn’t shrug him off a second time, he remains silent and Kao is at a loss, not knowing what he can do or say to make Pete talk to him.

They sit in uncomfortable silence for a while more, Kao growing more and more worried, before Pete finally speaks. 

‘I’m sorry,’ he says in a small voice, still not looking at Kao. 

Kao whips his head towards him, not believing the words he just heard. An apology had been the last thing he expected from Pete, and he has no idea what could have prompted it. 

‘Pete…,’ Kao starts saying, but the other man cuts him off. 

‘I shouldn’t have tried to give you money, you were right about that. And I shouldn’t tell you who you can and can’t hang out with or tutor. I really hate him, but it’s your choice if you want to spend some time with Non, I shouldn’t interfere,’ Pete says, still not looking at Kao. 

At those words, a small chuckle escapes Kao’s mouth. Although Kao is happy to hear those words coming from Pete’s mouth, he can’t quite believe how stupid his boyfriend can be sometimes. He appreciates what Pete is saying and yes, he’s right, he really does get no say in who Kao spend time with. But really, how can he be this blind ? 

‘Pete,’ he starts saying, not wanting his boyfriend to misinterpret his laugh earlier. ‘You think I actually want to tutor him ? The first time I met him, he cut in line, acted all entitled, and then proceeded to spill some coffee all over me. After all of that, you think I actually want to see him ? Plus, do you really think I enjoy spending my time tutoring a highschool brat instead of spending it with my boyfriend ?’ He asks, incredulous.

Kao sees a small smile reach Pete’s lips, although he still won’t look him in the eyes. Kao barely refrains from rolling his eyes. Of course the only thing that gets a reaction out of Pete is him calling the other boy a brat. Typical. 

‘Look,’ he says after a few seconds of silence. ‘I know you hate him, and I know he makes you uncomfortable. I wish you would trust me, but I don’t want us to fight over him anymore. If you really want me to, I’ll stop tutoring him. And next time sometimes comes between us, I promise that I’ll choose you first.’

At those words, Pete finally whips his head around and look at him, surprise and emotion shining in his eyes. Looking at him now, Kao feels his heart clench in his chest. The shock on Pete’s face makes it clear that he never expected this from Kao, never expected to be someone’s priority. Kao can’t believe that after two years, Pete doesn’t understand how important he is to Kao. That after two years of them being happy together, he doesn’t realize that he’s one of the most important people in Kao’s life, and he’ll always be one of his priorities.

If he’s honest, the surprise in Pete’s eyes hurts a little. He doesn’t know what he did to make Pete doubt his feelings for him, but he vows that he’ll do better in the future. Him and Pete aren’t always the most affectionate towards each other, but he hates the thought of him doubting his importance to Kao. He just won’t accept that. 

Pete looks at him silently, the emotion he’s feeling made clear by the unshed tears in his eyes. Kao looks away from Pete’s eyes in embarrassment, not used to being this outspoken about his feelings, and getting more and more uncomfortable the longer Pete stays silent. His boyfriend is usually the one dropping smooth lines and being expressive, he really expected him to have said something by now, and he doesn’t quite know where to put himself. 

After a few seconds, Pete shakes his head, as if clearing the thoughts from his mind. 

‘You don’t have to do that Kao,’ he ends up saying. 

Before Kao has the time to process what Pete just said, the other boy keeps on talking. 

‘You’re right, maybe I am selfish,’ he says with a small smile. 

‘Pete…,’ Kao tries to refute, hating that he was the one who said those words in the first place and put that thought in his head.

But Pete continues speaking before before he has the time to say more. 

‘No, you were right. I know I can be selfish sometimes. But you know, there is nothing I wouldn’t do for my friends and family. I know you’re doing this for your mom and your sister, and well… They’re my family too,’ he finishes casually, shrugging his shoulders before turning back towards the pool. 

Kao feels his throat tighten at these words, and he keeps staring at the side of Pete’s face in shock. This time, he’s the one that’s left speechless because of what his boyfriend said. 

‘Really, though. Trust Pete to utter something so important with the utmost casualness,’ he thinks to himself, before shaking his head in disbelief. 

‘They’re my family too’, he’d said, and a smile slowly breaks on Kao’s face. He really shouldn’t have been this surprised by Pete’s reaction.

Sometimes, they both get so caught up in their bickering and other issues, that Kao forgets that him and Pete have been through so much together already, and that Pete loves his family.  Pete was there to help his mom when she was sick because they even got together, for god’s sake. Add to that the countless nights that Pete’s spent at his house, eating dinner with all of Kao’s family, and his mother cooking all of his favorite dishes… Of course Pete loves his mother. Just like Kao himself has so much respect and fondness for Pete’s father. 

With love shining in his eyes, Kao cups Pete’s cheeks in between his hands, and pulls a little to encourage the other man to look at him. When Pete finally turns his face towards him, Kao can read the embarrassment reddening his cheeks, and before Pete has the time to say anything to take back the sweet words spoken, Kao brings him closer and kisses him sweetly. 

Pete being Pete, however, he instantly tries to make the kiss deeper and pull his boyfriend closer, prompting Kao to laugh against his lips. Some things never change. 

He drops a couple more short kisses on the other man’s lips, before he pulls away and drops his forehead against Pete’s shoulder, wanting to be close to the other man. 

‘Always so horny,’ he says, shaking his head against Pete’s shoulder and laughing softly. 

Pete shrugs his shoulder at that, purposefully dislodging Kao’s head from its resting place. 

‘And there you go ruining the moment again,’ he answers, turning his face back towards the swimming pool and pretending to be mad. 

A quick look at Pete’s face is enough for Kao to see the tightness around his lips where he is trying to hold his smile however, and Kao can’t help but laugh again before dropping one last kiss on Pete’s shoulder. 

They still have a lot to talk about, and the sickness he felt in his stomach after Pete walked away from him earlier still terrorizes him and makes him wonder how he could ever live without Pete if something happened between them. 

Somehow though, he knows they’ll be okay. He loves this goof so much, and he knows that whatever comes their way, they’ll figure it out. Together.

Dark Blue Kiss Takeaways

I am no expert when it comes to giving reactions, whether it's about a book, a movie, or a series that I watched. But the thing is, we have thoughts with what we hear, saw or experienced and sometimes it's a lot that we can't put words into it because the feels we had are so much we just can't say it. That's how I felt watching the Darl Blue Kiss. I have so many takeaways that I don't know how to put words in it and just poured out the feels the show had given me by saying it's a masterpiece. For me at least, it is.

I first encounter Pete and Kao in KMA and Kiss The Series. I am snatched with their Tom and Jerry like relationship. No, that's not my trope but somehow Pete and Kao just impossibly make sense. You don't get it? I don't too it's just how they make sense. Well we can say that love moves in mysterious ways (as per MYMP's song says) and that is how I see Pete and Kao.

The following are just MY INSIGHTS with DBK, now, if ever someone came across with this, which I highly doubt, you can just scroll down and not give a damn.

Also a disclaimer, I love the words 'I love', 'I like' and other more so you'll read them often.

CHARACTERS

I love how the series put together the development of each character. Especially Pete and Kao's, well it's their story after all. Growth in Pete and Kao's character are one of my favorites. Pete became mature enough to handle his feelings and make decisions not only basing it with what he wants. It's frustrating to hide a relationship for years but he did it anyway. Kao, although it's scary and difficult wanting to provide everything the people he loves needs and wants, he does it. But being too kind and generous can create problems, and when you're in one it's hard to decide because you don't want to hurt anyone. Close or not. But because of situations like that we learn. How to say no and how to weigh things.

SunMork started on the wrong foot. Maybe it was because of their age but maybe not too. We have experienced life differently that's why being open-minded and understanding should be practice because we don't know each other's story. That's one of the things I like about Sun and Mork. Whilst very different from each other they found something in each other worth risking it all.

When you fall in love it's not a choice, but staying in love is a decision you make. Staying in the relationship, fighting for it is a choice.

Non. He's just a kid, yes he is but he will not be always. Now, he made my head aches every episode he showed up but in the end, he is just a child who wants people to accept him for who he is not what they expect him to be. I know that there are Non in this world and I hope they find what they are looking for.

Cool Gang. KMA and DBK will not be KMA and DBK without these people. Thada, Sandee, and June although side characters make the show more whole. It's good to have friends who would support you and tell you off. That is good friendship and I love them for that. I just wish June would find the one that is for him.

Rain. Is a representation of a good friend and sibling. It's easy to be a friend or a sibling but to be a good one is kinda is. You have to know when to tell them off.

Family Relationship

The series shows different types of parent-child relationship and I love it. Families are different so as the parents and their children. There's this one scene where Pete and his family (with Kao of course) were dining together and talking about the accomplishments of each child. I mean, it is fine to have that kind of conversation, parents being proud of their child's success in one thing but I wish that people would also take into account that children or people are different from each other. They also have different phases or timelines in growth so pushing or comparing their accomplishments with others will just drag their confidence and self-esteem down. In that scene alone, you can see the difference between Pete's father to others and how I wish that most parents will take into consideration about their child's feelings when it comes to situations like that. Parents want what's the best for their children but sometimes, supportive is far different from wanting them to be how they picture they would be. Parents are our guardians, they out light into the path we are taking, but sadly some are blinded with what their roles are. Sometimes they are the ones who put out the light and that's sad, most realized it, after all, is said and done but I hope that by the show, it'll open our eyes to have an open mind and heart.

Pete and his dad's relationship are one for the books. I know it's hard for him but I think that both him and Kao's mom had come into terms with themselves that what matters most is their children's wish and welfare, and that is enough.

Now, Non and his dad's relationship is what we commonly see, whether it's about one's gender or career they choose some parents are like Non's father. Maybe they've experienced something in their past that made them like that but it's also not an excuse to let your child suffer with something he doesn't have an understanding of. Now, I am not an expert when it comes to family relationships but I know one thing for sure, talking it out is a great help.

Timely Issues Awareness

I believe that DBK had put several issue awareness in the series and that's a very big thumbs up to me. Almost everybody is on social media right now, and we have to put it in good use. All phrases to the writers and director for putting it on.

*Safe Sex. It's rare to find shows that promote safe sex. And for DBK to show it with a parent-child scene, wow, that's a big shout out for the show. Some might find it awkward or meh but just what Pete's father said, it's normal to discuss it because you care for the people's health and welfare.

*Social Media Awareness. Some still haven't realized how powerful social media is, especially if you are one of the influencers. With this you can destroy one's life or make a statement. So we have to be careful and vigilant using social media.

*Coming Out. What I learned in the series and with some of my friends is you don't get too out of them. It should be themselves, when they want, how they want. Now, it may be difficult for others to understand but let's put it this way, will you like it if your parents know something about you through other people? No, of course not, you want them to know your decisions and choices from yourself, right? So let's not take that away from each other. Now not everyone will be given an opportunity like that but at least, let's try to be kind and let that decision to that person. It is already hard finding out for yourself that what they think of you is different from what you want or what you are, let's not make it even harder for others.

Some other things I love about Dark Blue Kiss

*The color tones they used. I AM IN LOVE WITH IT.

*Opening. It gives off regal and classic vibe and I like it.

*Tay and New's DBK OST. Don't fight me but it is a mood. Now maybe I am a little biased but I love singing TayNew. Who's with me?

Acting-wise, I applaud everyone.

Tay had just finished 3WBF then started Pete immediately and that just screams professionalism and talent.

New, the first thing I saw in New besides his facial features is his expressive eyes. I don;t know about you but New can convey Kao's feeling through his eyes. And that scene where Kao cries coming out with his mom, I am hurt. I cried too.

Podd. I am so looking forward to his delivery of Sun and he didn't disappoint me.

Fluke and Aj. They surprised me. This is the first time I see them acting and I can't wait to watch them in their next projects.

Dark Blue Kiss has a special place in my heart because I just felt it's every character. Plus I love series that have takeaways. So to the people who made the series possible, THANK YOU!

Ficlet: Collect Your Boyfriend

Dark Blue Kiss. PeteKao. For @inlovewithjdramas who wanted a drunk and terribly honest Kao. 

Kao wasn’t tipsy. He wasn’t simply drunk. He was Drunk with a capital D!

Pete loved being good at what he did and he loved making his father proud - and his internship allowed him to do exactly that. But excelling at something meant applying himself, and doing more than the bare minimum, the way he used to before, also meant having much less time for other things in his life. 

Important things. 

Like his friends.

Or his boyfriend.

They all agreed to meet up at their usual bar that night, Friday evening, and chill after a week of hard work during which they barely even talked to each other. Yes, they all agreed and they all looked forward to it - but then Pete got stuck at the office with his boss making an oversea conference call and before it was all over and done, successfully so, Pete was already running an hour late. 

And then he received a text message from Sandee. Come collect your boyfriend, now!

What the hell?

“What the hell, guys?” Pete asked as he stopped at their table, eyeing his boyfriend suspiciously. 

Because Kao was drunk. Not tipsy, not simply drunk, but Drunk with a capital D. He sat there with one hand raised towards the strobing lights hanging from the ceiling and just stared, fascinated by the colorful highlights flashing through his spread fingers. He was humming to himself softly with a dreamy expression on his face. His nose and cheeks were flushed pink, eyes glassy and lips redder than usual. He looked absolutely out of it.

Sandee raised her hands in defense. “Hey, don’t look at us. He had one drink, I swear,” she said and pointed at the empty glass sitting in front of Kao.

Frowning, Pete reached for the glass and sniffed at it. “Shit!” He jerked the glass away from his face. What the hell was that? He felt almost tipsy just from breathing in the vapors. 

June pointed with his thumb over his shoulder. “The bartender decided to experiment a little and apparently chose our poor Kao here as his guinea pig. And you know how Kao is, he can’t say no to anyone who gives him googly eyes!” He laughed.

Yeah, Pete knew, very well so. Sometimes he thought that a simple no wasn’t even in Kao’s vocabulary. “And you couldn’t have stopped him?” he demanded, annoyed.

Thada shrugged. “Why? It was just a drink! We’re in a bar! Who would’ve guessed that he would end up like…” He waved his hand at Kao. “That.”

Right then, Kao finally noticed Pete. He turned to his boyfriend with a smile so bright and happy that it made Pete’s heart skip a beat. God, Kao was gorgeous. And all Pete’s!

“Pete!” Kao exclaimed, and twisting around in his chair, he hugged Pete hard around the waist. He pulled Pete close and buried his face in Pete’s stomach, snuggling in. “I missed you so much,” he confessed openly, his voice a little muffled by Pete’s shirt.

The others laughed.

Suppressing a smile, Pete stroked Kao’s hair tenderly, then settled his hand on the back of Kao’s head. “I missed you too. I see you got drunk without me,” he pointed out.

Kao sighed sadly and nodded. “I did. I didn’t mean to. But I did.”

Smiling, Sandee said, “How about you take him home? We can meet up again tomorrow night.” 

Hearing that, Kao looked up at Pete, propping his chin against Pete’s stomach, arms still wrapped around Pete’s waist. “Home?” he asked hopefully.

Now Pete really couldn’t help but smile. “Yes, home.”

Kao grinned again, eyes sparkling. “Sex? Sex with you is awesome!” he stated very honestly. And loudly.

The others guffawed while Pete’s eyes opened wide, partially in panic at Kao’s unrestrained drink-induced honesty - but also in surprise, hearing those words. Because he always thought that when it came to sex, Kao mostly indulged him. Not that Kao hated sex, he was enthusiastic enough in the sheets, but he also never initiated anything himself and oftentimes seemed almost... reluctant. So hearing Kao say something that...

“Nosy as I am, that’s almost TMI!” June chortled, pulling Pete out of his startled thoughts.

“Yes,” Thada agreed, grinning wide. “Who knows, Kao might feel the unquenchable need to share your favorite brand of lube with the class next!”

Blinking, Kao turned to him, opening his mouth to, apparently, do exactly that. Horrified, Pete quickly covered Kao’s mouth with his hand, silencing him. 

“We better go now,” Pete decided, pulling Kao up to his feet and propping him up when he swayed.

Sandee snorted. “Yeah, you better.”

Pete glared at her. “Since this is all your fault because you didn’t watch over my boyfriend better, do find out what deadly potion it was that he drank there, what it’s called and what’s in it. Because I better make sure he never gets anywhere near it ever again!”

Dragging Kao out of the bar and over to their waiting car was an adventure in itself because for every two steps they took forward, they seem to take at least one step back or to the side, much to Kao’s giggly amusement - and Pete’s huffy exasperation. 

When Pete finally pushed Kao into the passenger seat, he was all sweaty and exhausted. But he couldn’t be really mad at Kao because it wasn’t his fault, not even when he started listing to the side, and flailing to catch himself, hit the car horn hard, honking. Kao was no lightweight when it came to drinking so the potency of that drink truly must’ve caught him by surprise.

Reaching into the car, Pete helped his boyfriend sit up and put his seat belt on. When he tried to straighten up, though, Kao grabbed Pete’s head in his hands and pulled him close by his ears for a sloppy kiss.

“I love you so much,” Kao mumbled, staring at him from just a few inches away.

Hearing it made Pete’s chest feel all warm and tight and tingly. He would never tire of listening to Kao saying those words to him. Before he could reply, though, Kao continued.

“And I really, really, really want to make love to you right now,” Kao stated in a husky voice, licking his lips.

Pete swallowed hard, following Kao’s tongue with his eyes. It was so very pink against his cherry red lips. Suddenly, he felt hot all over. Yes…

No.

Pulling back a little, Pete said, “You’re drunk.”

Kao nodded seriously. “That… I am. But I still want you. I always want you. I want to feel you against me, on me, in me so badly that holding back hurts.”

That made Pete pause. “Then why do you?” he asked softly. “Hold back, I mean.”

Kao sighed mournfully, stroking Pete’s cheekbones with his thumbs. “What if-what if you get bored with me? Tired of me? Wanting you? Like that? All the time? What if it - what if I become too much? What--”

“Kind of a nonsense is that?” Pete jumped in, frowning. “Sex doesn’t work like that, Kao. There’s no… there’s no finite number of intercourse, no finite amount of sex you’re allowed to have in a relationship. As long as it feels good, as long as both parties want it, it’s all good.”

Kao didn’t look convinced. For someone so brilliant, Kao could be really dense sometimes. And this was apparently something they needed to talk about - but not when Kao could barely keep the thread of their conversation in his grasp it seemed.

Because suddenly, Kao smiled dreamily at Pete and kissed his frowning mouth lightly. “You were my first, you know? My first and only lover ever,” he breathed out against Pete’s lips, kissing them again.

Pete’s heart skipped a beat. Arousal shot through him and lust pooled hotly in his groin because Kao’s admission hit just the right spot, fueling Pete’s possessiveness. He suspected as much but actually hearing Kao say that out loud…

But then Kao’s lips left his, Kao’s hands slid off Pete’s face and his forehead thunked gently against Pete’s as he fell asleep, between one moment and the next, finally losing his hopeless fight against his inebriation. 

Laughing softly, Pete stayed like that a second or two longer, enjoying Kao’s weight against him. Then he gently pushed Kao back, making sure Kao’s head wouldn’t loll too hard when he let go. Then, with a fond smile, he stroked Kao’s cheek lightly. Pete loved this man so much.

Once Kao was up and running on full steam again, they would have to talk. About sex and expectations, misunderstandings and honest communication. Pete hated talking about feelings - it made him feel vulnerable so he avoided it as much as possible - but Kao’s drunken confession made him realize that his own reluctance to discuss, well, pretty much anything might be at least partially responsible for this issue. And it was high time that they did something about it. 

Not right now, though, Pete thought as he straightened up and smiled down at Kao slumbering in the passenger seat. Right now he had to get Sleeping Beauty to bed. 

He closed the door with a soft click.

god i love... literally everything about mork? mostly though, how he sees wrong things happening and immediately steps in. he does have anger issues but man... he’s just such a flawed and well-rounded character and i love how he opens up to sun, it’s just wonderful :’)

least favorite thing about them: 

he needs therapy for his anger issues etc honestly, he got better in dbk and held himself back but he needs to hold himself back for himself and not because sun told him to, you feel me?

favorite line: 

“that’s your business” when sun told him he loved him like that was hilarious okay nah but for real, i really do love the line “i may like men, but i don’t want to be with a man like your brother” because he genuinely subverted the onlygay4u trope and it was so so refreshing to see! my jaw literally dropped at that line and it’s one of the most memorable lines in dbk i feel.

i mentioned this in the post about pete but mork and pete! they would be such good friends, i feel. mork would be so protective of pete once they warmed up to each other and i think it’d be nice to see these rough and tough guys become best friends and work through their issues together. them swimming together and mork picking pete up from places when his car’s in service and them making fond fun of each other whenever pete drops by the café is just... yeah. i would pay to see that!

random headcanon: 

the idea of mork getting a small kitty... that would be so so cute! sun falls in love with her immediately and mork pretends he doesn’t like cats but he dotes on her and rain and pete make fun of him for it but they love him, truly. mork and animals, man! that’s healing!

unpopular opinion: 

hmmm i feel like a lot of people brush over mork’s actions a bit too much and therefore his character development also goes a bit underappreciated? he was fine in dbk and he gets himself into the most justified fights but in kma, especially, it wasn’t that great. i think we need to appreciate his growth as a person more and also acknowledge that his character development didn’t stop in dbk!

crossfire by stephen! it’s very much a mork song considering the sheer amount of justified fights he gets into. especially the lines “he’d trade his guns for love / but he’s caught in the crossfire” like... that has such big mork vibes!

this is my absolute favourite picture of mork! it’s from the first scene in dbk where he drops kao off at the pool and i remember thinking he had such a pretty smile... and he barely smiled again fhsnfh but yeah, i also adore the relationship mork and kao have. i think he’d be super protective of him and see him as a little brother, they’re the best :^)

bro, you're so sweet :( sjsbsjsb having a tag would be an honor! dbk was a painful subject to me bc i thought they did petekao wrong. then u talked bout how we were able to see pete growing and omg u were so right?? even tho i dislike the "possessive" thing between petekao, they're an adult couple learning how to deal w relationships and work life. it's kinda amazing and not smth we get everyday from bls. they have real problems and find real solutions for them. might not be the best ~for me +

but it's what works for them. i really think pete should look for therapy or smth to talk about his insecurity issues and hot temper. i am not joking or anything, i actually think he has a lot to learn and that would be extremely helpful. but ofc nobody cares about mental health and therapy so i can't expect that in a tv show 😅. nway, overall i was able to value more their relationship, be happy for their growth and actually miss them. +

ah hello!! i feel you, when i first tried to watch dbk, it was really painful for me as well because i didn’t go into it from a neutral standpoint. i had heard things about it and i couldn’t deal with petekao being done dirty because i loved them in kma and our skyy. so watching it without my Third Eye Open hurt me a lot. but when i did my dbk rewatch, i realised the subtle way pete grows and learns to communicate and how much pete and kao truly have been through as two adults who love each other a lot and want to make their relationship work, which was so refreshing to see in a show like this! obviously it could have been done better and i 100% agree with you saying that pete needs to go to therapy, i genuinely feel like it would help him sort out a couple of his anger issues and jealousy and tap into the root of why he’s jealous--which is the fact that he thinks he isn’t good enough for kao, which we also see implicitly in the show. 

but yeah! i’m glad some of my takes could help you see their relationship in a different light and i’m super happy that you were able to enjoy it when watching it through a different lens! that’s super sweet :^)
