If you think this is too hard on literary criticism, read the Wikipedia article on deconstruction.
Imposter [Explained]
Transcript Under the Cut
[Caption above the panels:] My Hobby: Sitting down with grad students and timing how long it takes them to figure out that I'm not actually an expert in their field.
[For all four panels below, there are two frames crossing the border of each panel. The ones at the top left have a caption, and the one below right has the result of the timing.]
[Ponytail and Cueball are sitting across from each other in office chairs.] Engineering: Ponytail: Our big problem is heat dissipation Cueball: Have you tried logarithms? 48 seconds
[Cueball is sitting in a chair at the center of a table looking left at another Cueball-like guy. To the right is a long black-haired girl.] Linguistics: Cueball: Ah, so does this Finno-Ugric family include, say, Klingon 63 seconds
[Cueball is standing with his hands up talking to another Cueball-like guy and Megan who has lifted her arm to palm her face.] Sociology: Cueball: Yeah, my latest work is on ranking people from best to worst. 4 minutes
[Cueball is sitting in an armchair with another Cueball-like guy sitting attentively in front of him on the floor.] Literary Criticism: Cueball: You see, the deconstruction is inextricable from not only the text, but also the self. Eight papers and two books and they haven't caught on.

Comments:
Tim thinks about Jason a lot while he’s first training. He imagines the former Robins giving him pep talks, and uses them to fight off fear gas.
When Jason comes back, though, Tim’s really nasty, especially in his head. Jason, however, is somewhat respectful. He usually calls Tim ‘Tim’, and seems to kind of like him.
‘Pretender’ and ‘Imposter’ were only said while pretending to be Clayface. (And ‘Replacement’ doesn’t seem to be preboot canon at ALL.) It’s uncertain how much of that was an act, since Jason went back to pretending to be dead for MONTHS after the whole Hush arc.
I haven’t found ANY examples of people calling Tim ‘Babybird’. This is DEFINITELY fanon.

“I truly am Gibbs at this point.”
Austin Stowell arrives at this conclusion 90 minutes into an emotional conversation about taking on the leading role in “NCIS: Origins,” the prequel series to the long-running procedural. Set in 1991, four months after special agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ wife and daughter are murdered, “Origins” (which premieres on CBS on Oct. 14) is darker in tone and will illustrate Gibbs’ path to becoming the taciturn character portrayed so charismatically by Mark Harmon.
“The grief that he’s going through is not something that we can avoid. And as an actor, I’m someone who very much feels all of it,” says Stowell, pausing to think about his own father. “There were so many parallels to my own life — issues with suicide, a relationship between a father and a son, a feeling of imposter syndrome. It just feels right.”
On a humid September day, Stowell has chosen to meet at Birds, a neighborhood haunt in Hollywood. He’s biked over straight from set on the Paramount lot, and he knows most of the staff here — it’s where he worked for two years when he moved from Connecticut to L.A. in 2008 and was sleeping on his agent’s floor. This was just one of his odd jobs — another was caddying for Bill Murray — but it was while he was pouring beers that he landed his breakthrough role on “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.”
After the teen drama, he took on several “artistically accepted” projects, including Steven Spielberg’s “Public Morals” and “Bridge of Spies,” and “Catch-22” alongside George Clooney.
Then, in 2020, Stowell’s father died by suicide, and he moved back to the East Coast to be closer to his mother.
“It led me to probably some of the darkest days in my life, but then eventually this kind of rebirth,” Stowell says as his eyes fill with tears. That tragedy prompted “an array of emotions” and a questioning of purpose, all of which he sifted through while waiting out the COVID pandemic and strikes in Vermont. He filled his days with skiing, hiking, making honey and driving to Connecticut to have dinners with his mom. Then, his agent called with “NCIS: Origins.”
Stowell wasn’t particularly interested in taking on a procedural that could run multiple years and admits that thought was daunting, at first. But, the script felt personal.
“A lot of my relationship with my father plays through with Gibbs and his estranged relationship with his dad,” he says. “We both wish it were better, and we don’t know how to say the things that are in our hearts, not ready to face the truth and say it out loud.”
A few times throughout our conversation, Stowell gets pulled away in his thoughts. “Sorry, I can’t help but think of my dad,” he tells me, pausing to gather himself. Growing up, they bonded together over films like “Field of Dreams” and “Braveheart.”
“He loved that movie, and he would weep,” he says of latter. “That’s a big reason I do what I do. I love what storytelling does for people. I’ve seen the very real results and positive outcomes that it brings to people’s lives. If I can do that with this character for years? Consider me signed up. You asked if I’m afraid [it’ll go years]. Absolutely not. I’m afraid it’ll go away.”
He also knows his dad would love “NCIS: Origins.” While he wouldn’t quote Gibbs, “he would quote Franks a lot,” Stowell laughs. “He used to quote Sipowicz from ‘NYPD Blue’ all the time.”
The original Gibbs, Harmon, exited “NCIS” in 2021 but returns for “Origins” as narrator and executive producer. He came to the 2003 procedural with a similar skepticism Stowell had, reading the script, not expecting to like it. “I was looking to stay home more; I was traveling a lot and our family was young,” he says. Yet he was drawn to the name Leroy Jethro Gibbs. “It stopped me.”
In a later draft, the name was changed to “Bob Nelson or something,” Harmon says, and he demanded it be changed back. Then came the first day of shooting, which lasted 22 hours. “Not exactly my idea of staying home more,” Harmon laughs. “There were a lot of days like that in the first four years, a lot of ups and downs. There were cast changes, arc changes, writer changes. At one point, 33 writers had left that show.”
From the moment Stowell walked into the audition room, Harmon knew he was the right man to fill Gibbs’ shoes. “This character has a weight to it. He didn’t ask for that; I didn’t ask for that either,” says Harmon. “Austin’s the guy to take this weight.”
When Gibbs’ “NCIS” journey came to an end, he was alone. His work had been his life — but he looked “pretty content,” Stowell says. “Did he give too much of himself to the job? I don’t know.”
Three months into filming, Stowell could be describing himself. “I’m married to the job,” he says — and is grateful for the charater Harmon built, and for his predecessor’s availability through the transition. Whether he wants to talk about a specific storyline or discuss his hobbies, Harmon is there.
For example, Stowell is a huge New York Yankees fan — “a degenerate,” as he describes. He often references Lou Gegrig’s famous speech, quoting it during our interview: “Today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the Earth.” Stowell continues, “He talked about catching a bad break but having a whole lot to look forward to. And if that’s not Gibbs, I don’t know what is.”
When Harmon heard Stowell was a diehard Yankees fan, he made a call. “Next thing I know, I’ve got a pair of shorts that show up from Yankees camp with the No. 4 stitched into the back,” he says. “You can’t buy them! He called somebody at the camp for their warm-ups. They’re gigantic. I roll them six times!”
That’s just one story Stowell tells about Harmon. At the recent Creative Arts Emmys, he was excited to introduce himself to Jamie Lee Curtis. “She goes, ‘I know who you are. Mark talks about you all the time,'” he recalls. Curtis and Harmon play husband and wife in “Freaky Friday,” which just filmed a new sequel. After he contained his excitement, he told her how important “The Bear” had been to him and his family. “Particularly the ‘Fishes’ episode, I felt like I was watching my childhood. So I said, ‘I’ve gotta let you know that it really brought true healing for my brother and I.’ And that’s the power of TV.”
The role of Gibbs has changed Stowell’s life. The message — being a team is always better than being on your own — is one he takes to heart. “Playing Gibbs is making me want to be a better human being,” he says.
“We know who Gibbs becomes — this warmhearted, loyal but justified man, and someone who has made tons of mistakes,” adds Stowell. And he can relate: “I’m happy to have fallen down, happy to be well versed in using an eraser.”

TOKYO REVENGERS OCS:
PHARAOH’S KIDS
(Updated: 3-1-2024, added Seki and updated character deisgns)
Hihi!!!
Sekkun here with another character line up, this time it’s for my newly created Tokyo Revengers OCs.
They’re based off of, well, egyptian gods of course. I’ll explain that later. Been working on these OCs since some time ago, on and off.
Here is the character lineup, with their names, voice headcanons as well as a description (excuse my writing I am so sorry lmao)
So yeah that’s the 6 of them!
Now as promised, here’s what each egyptian gods they’re based off of:
-Koji Shimamoto (Anubis)
-Hisora Yamakawa (Horus)
-Junshin Miyazaki (Set)
-Hitsuto Fujita (Khnum)
-Arakawa Furutani (Sobek)
-Seki Saratani (Bastet)
HEIGHT CHART THINGY:
Now, since my TR OCs just came out from the oven, Koji being revamped especially, I don’t really have much lore between them.
BUT basically, these six are childhood friends that made a vow to compete against one another to see who’s the best in their friend group.
Tensions were risen slightly during their competition, however they still hang out as per normal when they’re not doing their daily gang stuff in their individual gangs. They all agreed to separate gang from play, too.
The game is played with the exception of Seki, who chose not to play the game as he quote-on-quote “prefers to do his own thing”. Seki will eventually join a gang, but that’s in the future and another story for another day.
Additional information is that Koji’s “REALLY good friends” with Mitsuya and he seems to talk about Mitsuya alot to Hisora.
Only Hisora knows about Koji being gay while the rest of his gang is straight and he’s supportive of it!…he just doesn’t like having to listen to his friend talk about or even mention the lilac-haired man every time.
Haha Koji you’re a straight imposter
CONCEPT ART/DOODLES:
(DELINQUENT YAOI REAL⁉️⁉️⁉️)
Yeah here’s kinda like a detailed ref(?) for Koji as well as some headshot sketches of Hisora, Junshin and Arakawa.
I gave Arakawa a mullet in the final one because the man bun was so good I had to save that hair style for the 2008 time skip.
(Sorry Hitsuto, no concept art of you. I shitted you out on the spot 🫶)
I’ll probably add more lore and post it here but for now, enjoy new lore!!
#tokyo revengers#tokyo revengers oc#tokyo manji gang#toman#valhalla#black dragon#tenjiku#tr oc#oc x canon#egyptian gods#oc#character ref sheet#character concept#damn one is gay the rest are straight#it is nearly 5am

The 50 Best Documentaries Of All Time
I know this list misses out a number of seminal works, such as Man With A Movie Camera, Nanook of The North, Night Mail and all Leni Riefenstahl's films, but the simple fact of the matter is I never really enjoyed any of those, so I can't very well bring myself to recommend them to others, well-made and influential though they are. The Mysterious Shapeshifter
[AO3 version]
Summary:
Daisuke and Iori head to a village in danger, but their enemy is... Lightnimon!? Unable to change, Daisuke has to face an enemy without revealing his secret identity... Who's this copycat and what is he planning to do?
[Note: It's 2008; Just a funny Daisuke-Iori combo action. I like this one too!! The comical tone was half inspired in the Kizuna Drama CD]
“I’m tired from that last battle, sigh” Daisuke lied on the grass, his arms behind his head. He was watched by Iori, Armadimon and V-mon who were collecting fruits for the camp.
“I know you’re tired but could you help us, Daisuke-san?”
“Yeah, please we can’t carry all of those alone, dagya”
“I’m… not sure what to do… Having a double identity this time is making me appreciate Spider-Man, Batman, Supergirl, and other superheroes…”
He got up from the ground and walked to the group, to help them get the fruits.
“Where have you been?” Iori asked out of curiosity “Don’t tell me you didn't sleep last night.”
“Yeah, you got me. I had no peace last night” and he sighed, “Ranamon and Frostmon are out, but there’s still troops and Lekismon around. Actually I didn’t sleep because I had to fight a horde of Tyrannomon all alone. I mean, V-mon helped but we couldn’t call for help.”
“I see…”
“Lightnimon works alone. V-mon can only help if hidden or covered by a cape.”
“But… won’t the cape burn, dagya?”
“...” Daisuke glanced at Armadimon for a few seconds. Then… “That’s a good question, but thankfully it never happened.”
Suddenly, some screams were heard in the distance, coming from a village. Its villagers started to run away, so some passed through the boys.
“What the…” Daisuke said, then dropped all fruits on the group to stop a panicked EbiBurgamon, “Oi, come here kiddo! What’s wrong?”
“A-ah…!! H-humans!! Um… You must be the Chosen Children… Please save our people and town! We’re under attack…!!”
“Those guys again!?” Armadimon gritted his teeth.
“N-No… It’s… Lightnimon! He’s against us now!!” and the child level digimon started to cry. Daisuke's eyes widened when he heard that name. He looked at Iori, Armadimon and V-mon with a grimace. Then, he patted the digimon’s head and smiled.
“Don’t worry, we will talk to him. Maybe he’s under a spell or being controlled by a gear or ring. We will save your home.”
The group ran to the village, but during their way…
“Daisuke-san, shouldn’t we call the others?”
“There’s no time for that,” he replied, “Someone’s pretending to be me.”
“Don’t you think this is exactly what he wants you to do? It’s a trap to lure you and unmask Lightnimon’s identity.”
“But… I promised that villager we would help them…!”
“... I think we can do something about this” Iori mused “We’re far away from the camp right now…”
“Alright, but I can’t change here… Whatever, I will have to face the imposter as myself then.”
“Do we have a plan?” V-mon asked.
“The plan is… Not screwing up. And you know I said it to myself too.”
Once they arrived in the village, the quartet saw a very bootleg black armor digimon walking around, commanding troops made of Fangmon. Daisuke and Iori evolved their partners to XV-mon and Ankylomon to fight such troops.
“Tail Hammer!”“X Larser!”
Iori was using the Submarimon-esque Sword to attack such enemies as well, while Daisuke couldn’t do anything this time except warn the other three about the enemies coming.
“Isn’t that a good hour for you to change?” Whispered Iori.
“The villagers will be scared” Daisuke replied, “and I can’t use that weapon without changing to him”
When the last Fangmon got beaten, they proceeded to search for the fake Lightnimon. Though, it was still risky for Daisuke to take part in battles yet, especially if their enemies didn’t know he’s still alive (or was what he assumed) which could turn things a little worse.
“There it is!” Daisuke muttered to the group, and they hid behind a house “Wait, that feels like a bootleg Lightnimon… I’m offended.”
“What, you take offense to that?” V-mon said (both him and Armadimon devolve to child form) eyes squinting at Daisuke.
“I… I mean! Ken felt insulted when I copied him…”
“That’s not the time for that” Iori whispered, “We need to find a way to unmask the copycat quickly.”
“Catch’em from their back!”
“That… is a good idea, I guess...” Iori blinked twice.
“Hmm, someone managed to beat my army” they heard the ‘bootleg’ Lightnimon monologuing, and his voice wasn’t like Daisuke’s at all, “You bet it was those annoying Chosen Children.”
He wasn’t looking, and the quartet approached carefully, until…
“I GOT YOU!” and the copycat turned back, releasing from his finger a shot of dark water and forced them to dodge.
“You knew we were around, heh...” Daisuke laughed nervously.
“Huh aren’t you… the dead Chosen Child?” the enemy gasped, “So, you’re alive!?”
“I didn’t die. I was just… Stuck in some dark cave waiting to be released from that prison” he shrugged. Armadimon didn’t catch that reference, but somehow Iori and V-mon did.
“Interesting… But you think you can beat me, the grand thief, Lightnimon?!”
“We know you’re not him, cut it off” Daisuke suddenly said with an annoyed tone.
“How are you so sure, human?”
“Hmm, as we saw… Lightnimon’s appearance resembles an armor based on Lighdramon” Iori started, “And judging by this fact, his attacks should be based on Lightning.”
“Yeah, and he uses a weapon with the same motif, dagya” Armadimon shrugged.
“Right!” V-mon nodded “And he doesn’t call himself by ‘Grand Lightnimon’ but more like ‘The Warrior of Night,The Silent Knight’ by what I heard from the digimon”
“Kh!! How do you all KNOW about him?! He’s a mysterious figure! Of course I am him!”
“Then, what’s your proof?” Daisuke rolled his eyes, “If the digimon in this village had time to take a look at you, they would totally see you’re not him.”
“You brats, I will--”
“Shoot us with lightning now!?” V-mon asked, “Because yeah Lightnimon’s name comes from ‘Lightning’ which means… You’re an imposter.”
The faker was making some noises of distress until he stopped and started laughing. Louder and louder, the laughter scared the digimon duo and made the boys uncomfortable.
“You’re sly foxes” the faker finally spoke again, “You manage to know more about a myth than me. Very well, I don’t have to keep this ugly form anymore.”
And his shape deformed from a small silhouette to a man’s size. A man with water-like hair and a white suit.
“This is my real form, and I’m Splashmon, the Water-tiger Shapeshifter.”
“What should we do now?” V-mon muttered to the group, “I assume he’s a higher level than us…!”
“It’s still ‘don’t mess this up’ !!” Daisuke replied in a murmur, “We might heat things up here”
“Ok! Heating things up is my middle name!”
“... V-mon, you don’t have a middle name.”
“Are you done?” Splashmon sighed.
“No, wait a little more” and both him and Iori took their digivices from their pockets “Courage Digimental Up!”
“Knowledge Digimental Up!”
V-mon and Armadimon amor-evolved to Fladramon and Digmon, stood in front of the kids and ready to attack. Iori summoned his Submari-Sword and got on guard, just to protect Daisuke this time.
“You can’t change yet, I believe” he muttered to Daisuke “I will be your bodyguard this time. Just once.”
“ ‘Just once you say… You had saved me countless times already, heh”
“I’ll not keep waiting for you to finish your chit chat!” Splashmon hissed, then ran in their direction.
“Here he comes!” Digmon alerted the group, “Gold Rush!!” and he shot his drills like missiles against Splashmon.
“This won’t scratch me!” the enemy laughed, the drills passed through his body like if they were passing through a waterfall, “I can turn my body solid and liquid as I please!”
“Uh oh…” Digmon gasped, the drills came back to him, “Now what should we do, dagya?”
“Fladramon might be useless too” Daisuke babbled, “I… We have to think quickly!”
Splashmon punched Fladramon and kicked Digmon quickly, making the hero digimon duo step back.
“Any plan??” Fladramon asked, and he dodged another kick, “hurry up!!”
“We… We are thinking!” Iori replied nervously, “Uh… Fladramon is fire, Digmon is earth… They’re not good for this battle…”
If… -- Daisuke thought -- If I could change to Lightnimon we could get some advantage since Lighdra-Glaive could stunt him, and water plus electricity is not a good match…
“Ugh…” Fladramon blocked a kick. “Argh!” But Digmon received a high pressure shot of dark water and fell on the ground.
“What? Are you that weak?? Or are you trying to buy time for the real Lightnimon to appear and save you all?”
“Darn it…!” Daisuke whispered, “I should’ve changed the moment I had a chance…!” “Hmm… What if…!! Daisuke-san, I got an idea!” “You got one!? Quick, say it!” “Right… Listen carefully”
“You’re too slow to attack, to block, to do anything!” Splashmon complained, but Fladramon shoved him away from them, “Oh…? That’s a different reaction…”
“Enough!” Fladramon growled, but Daisuke approached him, the same time Iori approached Digmon, whispering something in their ears “Oh, I got it…!!”
“What?” their enemy had no interest in what they were saying and conjured a chair made of dark water “Are you planning to entertain me this time?”
“Well you will see” Daisuke smirked.
“Big Crack!” Digmon impacted his drills on the floor and caused the ground to open under Splashmon’s feet. Once the enemy fell, Fladramon threw rocks to cover it quickly.
“Did you forget I can change from solid to liquid you silly-mons?”
“We know that” Iori said with a serious glare, “But you forgot that…”
Fladramon quickly changed its form to BurningFladramon and hit his paw on the top of the rocks burying Splashmon, “ Knuckle HEAT!!”
Splashmon’s screams were heard, and steam came from the opening. Yes, they had beaten Splashmon.
“... If you go to a liquid state, we will just need to boil you until you turn into steam.”
“As expected from Master Iori hehe~” Daisuke laughed, then, “Oh, wait a second. Point your digivice to the white mist before he disappears! And then press this button to devolve him to the Digiegg stage.”
“Huh…? O-Okay!!” And Iori pointed his D-3 to the steam, pressed the mentioned button and a flash of light shot from the screen, hitting the vapor and turning it into a Digiegg, who got caught in time by Daisuke.
“There, there you faker…” he gave it a little pat, “I think Frostmon can take care of you too…”
“Huh, Frostmon is alive?” Digmon and Iori exclaimed.
“Yeah, she is” BurningFladramon returned back to V-mon form, “Lightnimon didn’t kill her.”
“He didn’t, dagya…?” Digmon returned back to Armadimon form.
“... She devolved to a lesser form and is free from the bad guys” Daisuke said, then… “Ah, we need to bring everyone back… I need to do one more thing.”
“Huh?” The three tilted their heads.
The villagers came back, after Iori, Armadimon and V-mon gathered and brought them to the village. The absence of Daisuke made them confused, and once all the villagers were reunited…
A shadow appeared at the top of one of the houses.
“Fear not, dear villagers” Iori just recognized that voice and him plus Armadi-Vee squinted at Lightnimon, the one and only, jumping to the ground.
“Y-you!!” The villagers cried nervously.
“I don’t want to cause more trouble” Lightnimon tried to calm them all down, “To be honest, I’ve been under control of an evil digimon, but the Chosen Children here broke the curse and I’m back to my senses.”
Some noise from the crowd was heard, they were rumbling about what they had just heard.
“I’d like to give my sincere apologies for what I had done” and he bowed his head, “I’m so sorry, please accept my apology.”
“So… it was what I thought that happened!” The same EbiBurgamon from earlier said, and looked at the villagers “Lightnimon was out of himself, he’s fine now!”
The villagers cheered, “We forgive you, thank you for defending our village!”
“No, no…” Lightnimon said, “This time I was causing havoc. The ones you have to thank are the Chosen Children there.”
“Thank you, Chosen Children!”
“Uh… Thank you” Iori blushed, Armadimon and V-mon were waving their paws and hands.
“Now I need to go! See you! ” and Lightnimon ran away.
“You really had to do that?” Iori, Armadimon and V-mon had caught up with Lightnimon and now they were a few kilometers away from the village, in the forest.
“Couldn’t ya tell’em the truth, dagya?”
“I wish I could” he replied “But don’t you think it’s easier to let them believe the copycat was Lightnimon and then he was controlled by some spell or evil digimon?”
“Hmm, yeah I think so” V-mon said.
“All I could do was apologize for the damage. Even if it wasn’t me, I think I had a part in it…”
“I see,” Iori nodded sagely.
“Well, I have to bring this egg to his friend so he can hatch and have Frostmon and Ranamon’s company at least.”
“... Oh, so you will have to go there first?”
“Yeah, and quickly. If we’re seen together it might be suspicious.”
“Ok. Let’s go, Armadimon.”
“Come, V-mon.”
“We… meet at the camp right?”
“Yeah, I’m not running away anymore.”
And they went in different directions.

Let’s see how Mahiru died!
Well... I wouldn't say she died as of yet, after all we need to see what she did before then...
Huh? Why is that important...?
Remember when you say she was starting to avoid you after you gave her the photos? Well I figure you should see that wasn't the case...
Really...? Well, let's see...
...
...
...
*opens the door to the dining hall* Geez, that Monomi was really annoying - I had to convince her that Nagito needs food...
???: Ah, well well... if it isn't Mahiru, it's so nice to see such a friendly face...
Huh...? *in the room, chain up to one of the tables sat Nagito...*
NAGITO: So... what brings you here...? I guess Nekomaru and Kazuichi told you where I was?
Yeah, they did... honestly I can't believe they think leaving you here was a good idea but more importantly...
I hope you realize what you did is wrong; you got both Imposter and Teruteru killed because of you wanting the killing to start!
...
Seriously do you even feel guilty at all for what you did? You were going on and on about your weird ideology and push Teruteru to murder, I mean why would you do that at all?
Well... given the hope of seeing his mother again, I figure it would overcome the despair but I suppose it can't be help...
Ah but you don't need to pay attention to me, you could just leave me here and I could starve to death, which is a preferable outcome...
While I'm still annoyed with you, I'm not going to do that because if we did; another class trial will be held and likely Kazuichi and Nekomaru would be executed.
But... at least it's better then the current motive we got but I rather hope that there's no more murders...
A motive you say?
Yeah... it's a video game called 'Twilight Syndrome Murder Case' which Fuyuhiko was the first to play it.
Which he told me to play as it involves me and gave me some photos but... I don't remember taking them...
I see... so a video game, huh?
Never thought Monokuma would choose that title, I did remember playing it when I was younger; it was a horror-themed action adventure and the series went on until 2008.
But hey, maybe you should play it then!
And why should I?! I say before I'm not going to play that stupid game and resort to murder! No way I'm going to do that at all, nope!
But even then, aren't you curious? I think given you are a photojournalist and want to follow your mother's footstep; I'm sure she would want to check that out, right?
...Huh?
Remember that I read up on all the Ultimates that were going to attend this class, well I did hear quite a bit about you as well, Mahiru. You want to become a photographer just like your mom who's a war photographer and took photos of various wars and conflicts in the middle east.
So wouldn't the Ultimate Photographer want to investigate this? But hey, given you confirmed you won't play it then maybe you can ignore it if you want besides, it is just a game after all.
...I'll think about it, but right now I'll get you breakfast. *walks out and closes the door*
I know that we agree we shouldn't play that game but still, the fact that it includes us and... mom would want to investigate this, wouldn't she?
I'm not sure what to do, maybe... maybe I can ask the others that were involved in that case too and figure this out; I... I don't think I can do this alone.
*Confused by this, Mahiru leaves as she goes to get breakfast...*

Diaspora Aesthetics
African Diaspora in the works of Aaron Douglas, Jacob Lawrence and Jean-Michel Basquiat (Lemke, 2008) is an article, in the book: Exiles, Diasporas and Strangers (Mercer, 2008), that aims to investigate what diaspora art looks like and can be characterised by. The writer, Sieglinde Lemke, does this by evaluating three artists’ work (named in the title) and visually analysing how they link to diaspora.
Throughout the essay, the writer explains that diaspora art in general serves to unite people. She compares the work of R.B. Kitaj’s First Diasporist Manifesto (1989) and Stuart Hall’s Cultural Identity and Diaspora"(1990). She finds that both reject a “backward looking conception of diaspora“ (Menke, 2008) and believe that diasporic art aims to affirm the diasporic identity. From this statement, it can give off the impression that the imagery of the paintings will be positive and welcoming as unity is synonymous with cohesion and totality. Key fundamentals that are observed by functionalists. However, Kitaj says how the diasporic life is defined by “transient restlessness, Un-at-homeness and groundlessness”( Kitaj, 1989) and Hall describes the black diaspora being characterised by its “hybridity, contingency and diversity” (Hall 1990). Despite seeming to contradict themselves, they mean that by creating art work that individuals can see themselves in, even if the imagery represents painful experiences like struggle and oppression, the viewer feels seen and comforted, thus forth “being forward looking” and creating unity.
Early on in the essay, Menke introduces how the homophone of “roots”, “routes” and “riots” are used as key aspects in the diaspora discourse. Clifford (Menke, 2008) observed how by combining roots and routes, produced what Gilroy (1993) called “alternate public spheres”. This was when a “community consciousness” and a community was constructed. This meant that although the individual may feel like they are alienated in the society that they live in, they can still connect to their ancestors and their culture through the art that connects different parts of their culture and community through diaspora art.
One point I personally agree with Menke was when she was discussing Aaron Douglas’ work Negro in an African Setting and quoted Paranjape (Menke, 2008) saying that the the artists represent that the “homeland” is a sort of “sacred site or symbol almost like an idol of memory”.The diversity within different diaspora was acknowledged many times in the
Although I disagree with some of the interpretations of the art discussed in the essay whihc used the the idea of “yearning” which was repeated theoughout the text. These statements give off the impression that there is resentment for the country that the individual lives in. There is the implication that the country the person has ties to is where they should feel belonging but I find that from personal experience and form conversations with other people from a similar background to me that young people who were raised in a country that is different to their ethnicity, experience some sort of imposter syndrome when surrounding by either cultures that are a part of their hybrid identity, so they do not have the same sort of relationship to the “homeland” the essay seems to romanticise. It also makes me think that you must sacrifice one of your collective identities in order to be accepted; however, I do not believe that this is true.
In the essay I would have also liked to hear more about post modern theories in relation to the art pieces. When Menke would use the term postmodern it was usually brushed over. There is a part earlier on in the essay where the author writes about how Locke, one of Aaron Douglas’ inspirations, emphasised in his manifesto the new negro that artists need to use their culture and ancestry to inspire their art, the way that famous western artists like picasso did in order to shape black american modernism. By reclaiming the influences, it allows the “disenfranchised to create their own meta narrative ”(Menke, 2008) . Postmodernist theorists like Lyotard would argue that “meta narratives are breaking down”(Lyotard, 1979). They no longer hold power anymore. This is a result of increased fragmentation of society caused by factors like globalisation. So maybe even if there is a new theoretical meta narrative it may not hold as much power as posed in Menke’s writing.
I do agree with Lyotard that overarching metanarratives do not dictate how people's lives go as strictly anymore. I think that the reason for this is because of the increased access of technology and the internet. This has led to “pick n mix identities' ' (Baudrillard, 1970), since individuals’ consumption are no longer restricted by age, class or gender. Globalisation and glocalisation means that consumers can choose elements of identities from anywhere in the world, this is not just limited to clothes. Diasporic identities can now find communities online. I think there are many more subcultures online than there were when the book Exiles, Diasporas an Strangers was published.
Although I agree with these postmodernist theories, I do not think they always apply to diasporic identities as the theories seem to mostly apply to the west. I think that purely having access to all these types of identities and subcultures does not give someone the privilege to take a part in them and use them as a part of their own identity. For example how Sohelia Sokhanvari presented Iranian women, they in theory could wear what they wanted but, there were consequences to these decisions. Diasporic identities tend to cluster together and create communities. There are many examples of this in London, such as ChinaTown. By growing up in one of these small diasporic communities, I find that the values that are encouraged in the “homeland” are continued on. Like the types of clothing and expectations of “young bengali women.”
After reading this extract, I would like to look more into the history of Bangladeshi textiles and also the concept of primitivism that was mentioned in the book. Where cultures that did not resemble the west, are looked down upon. I have experiences where people would make remarks such as comparing acts like eating with your hand (instead of your hands) as uncivilised or “animal like ''. I think that looking into this can help me choose symbolism that will inform my work.

1, 13, and 21!
Thanks, Lano!
Who was your first ever OC? Do you still “use” them? How have they evolved over time?
He technically isn’t the first EVER because I have been making up stories since forever, but the oldest OC I can think of has to be Karn. Made him up in 2006 and worked with him until about 2008. Then he got benched. Which seems odd now because I revisited his character starting in 2022 and holy hells. I forgot how much I loved him. (I distinctly remember a class in high school where we did a guided meditation and he freaking appeared to me in it, complete with actual physical sensation of him hanging onto me -- threw me wildly off balance, like holy shit he was real in that moment. I was legitimately upset to have to leave him behind at the end of that. ANYWAY)
I feel like Karn hasn't really evolved over the years, so much as I just got better at writing him; I was not good at writing a ten-year-old kid when I was fourteen. That said, I've learned more about Karn since coming back for him, and he's no longer just the annoying child character. He's developed clearer hopes and fears and just an overall clearer sense of self (inasmuch as anyone has a solid sense of self as a kid). His role in the story kind of abruptly dropped off in the last few chapters of the old first draft he was in and I'm excited to find ways to fix that in the rewrite; he's not stealing the spotlight from the actual MC, but Karn's so present in the first bit that it's weird that I started just hand-waving him out of the story. He's thematically appropriate to keep around, dangit!
I've posted this picture before but look at my little guy. I love him so much (one day I might even finish colouring him)
13. Which story has the most lore?
Hands down, Talentless has the most lore. I used to keep track of it in a 30+ page document to keep track of the magic system alone.
I haven't fully developed the history of the world, but there's enough there that I could probably have a similarly sized document for historical events, or notes about the different countries.
One of my proudest moments of creating lore for Talentless was at 6:10 one morning when I just whipped up an entire fable from the Faerie cultures and typed it into Skype for my co-author. I believe the response was something like "Did you deadass just wake up and write an entire goddamn fairy tale in 20 minutes?"
21. When did you start considering yourself a writer/artist?
Heck if I know. I feel like I've stopped considering myself an "artist" in regards to drawings since I got hit with that artblock at the end of university. Now I feel like I'm just a writer who occasionally produces sketches - which is probably not fair to myself.
I feel like I still get a bit of imposter syndrome when I call myself a writer, because sometimes I feel like a fraud, but I know I am a writer. And I don't really know when I started thinking of myself as one. (Currently, though, one of my MCs is giving the cold shoulder and I need him to talk to me, so I think I'm feeling more down on my abilities than usual)
