YES. JOURNEY TO THE WEST IS INCREDIBLE.
I got a 4-volume set one year for my partner’s birthday, and we read it together - by that I mean, we used to voice act it together. Publicly. We have so many in-jokes and references that come from Wu Cheng’en being genuinely so fucking funny.
“I’ve travelled every corner of this earth! There’s nothing I haven’t seen!” “Have you seen a Manfruit?” “No, I haven’t!!”
*Wukong killing the 6-eared macaque so hard he extincts the species* And that is why you never see any 6-eared macaques.
*Wukong erasing names of all macaques from the Book of Death in the underworld/afterlife*
There is a poem to prove it that goes...
WICKED APE
‘Protector of Horses’ lol
The several incidences with piss
The several incidences where Sanzang gets monknapped and must be rescued by his knight in shining armour, Wukong (dragging a reluctant Pig and Friar Sand along with him)
The Little Junior Devils
“As they say - why bother two hosts when you can only bother one?... As they say - why make two trips when one is sufficient? As they say... give me the cudgel”
*Wukong making the word ‘stone’ illegal*
*Whenever Taoists are involved you can bet £100 they’re that chapter’s bad guys and you’d be right 99% of the time*
I appreciate approximately none of that will make any sense if you haven’t read it but TRUST. It is legitimately awesome, and I still want a t-shirt that says ‘Protector of Horses’ in very fancy writing and calligraphy.
kills me that "every single classic out there is written by white people" is such a common take. are the literary traditions of other countries a fucking joke to you? come on. go read the journey to the west or something I beg

Something Wukong would say if you dress up pretty for him: ~Hmph, don’t go getting a big head just because you look... decent today. You’re lucky I’m used to handling overwhelming sights. Can’t have you distracting me, though. Got important things to do, you know? Big idiot, the faint flush on your cheeks is giving you away.

Could this be the origin of the term "Handsome Monkey King"?
Someone on the Journey to the West discord posted their own folk interpretation of mei (美, "beautiful"), as in Meihou wang (美猴王, "Handsome Monkey King"). They believed that the two prongs on the top referenced Sun Wukong's feathered cap. But others pointed out that this was not the case.
This reminded me of my own theory on the possible origin of Meihou wang (美猴王). I have previously suggested on my blog that the title is a play on Mihou wang (獼猴王, "Macaque/Monkey King"). This is because the Song dynasty version of Journey to the West calls Sun Wukong's antecedent Mihou wang. Even the Chinese version of an Indian jataka tale where the Buddha is a monkey king calls him Mihou wang. Also, Wiktionary states that older Chinese (and ethnic dialect) pronunciations of mei (美) sound more like "mi."
I must point out that I am NOT fluent in Chinese; nor am I a historical linguist of the language. This is just something that dawned on me one day. I would like feedback from more knowledgeable persons.

Hi, again!!
this is the anon that told you about SWK’s kids a few days ago- so when I saw your newest post I- *Sobbing in the distance*
ALSO Fun Fact: Yuebei Xing is his only daughter, her name also means “Moon Comet Star”
Pāramitā, his oldest son- who is also both a king and a general- means “Perfection”
I would love to think that Wukong constantly has his hands full with his kids. Especially considering the fact that both of his eldest are strong as heck!!
Of course Wukong’s kids would have the most ostentatious royal sounding princess names ever they all inherited his +1000 aura.
Dude probably has like over 300 concubines back home and his kids just crawl all over him and chew his tail whenever he’s there. I also think it would be super funny if he just comes back after a century and they’re fully grown going hi dad! :D but he’s just like who are you people 🗿
Also at one point every cub goes through demon monkey puberty where they accidentally sneeze and blast a hole through the wall lmao. Do you think he gets them fixed or just leaves em there as like a commemorative baby’s first power burst?

This is what MK warned me about when making this blog, huh.
Although roach is a correct assumption for what Macaque is.

I didn't know that one of the most heartwarming stories that I would read was going to be how an intrepid monkey king receives his new name from who is going to be his master in the arts of immortality.
After ten years of leaving Flower - Fruit Mountain and his fellow monkeys behind. Of wandering and interacting with humans, Sun Wukong finally starts his path towards immortality with a new name. A name that he now has the responsibility as a disciple to maintain, and live it up to his full potential.
Sun (boy) Wukong (Wake-to-the-void), the monkey king who will shake the void.
Names represent so many things. They are our face to the world, a symbol of existance, a powerful tool on the wrong hands for some, and a heavy chain for others. It's fitting that now named Sun Wukong gets a new name to represent a new phase in his long life, a new phase to confront that barrier which prevents him (to his understanding) to be truly free in every meaning of the word.
It's just so heartwarming to read the process of choosing it. How Patriarch Subodhi asked for his name, only for Wukong to not have one, and instead of judging him the Patriarch starts to analyse everything around the monkey king to give him a full name, a good name worthy of such special disciple. Starting with a surname that represents who Sun is, but without the animal radical to indicate how he has the possibility to trascend it; then the given name that unites Wukong to both his master and his fellow disciples with a generational character.
United as companions through multiple seasons, like a family in a sense of expected companionship and support. Nothing will replace Sun Wukong's family on Flower - Fruit Mountain, but in this new path to reach immortality he will find another that will teach him in every step he takes.
No wonder Sun Wukong is so joyful at the end of the chapter, to be named with so much care must feel amazing.

I picked up reading JTTW again, uni is tough and although I am not really done with my work for the week, my brain needs a treat.
And I forgot that the book uses descriptors like "Handsome Monkey (King )" and or discriptors along the lines of "oh greate sage", when Monkey King does stuff.
I can just see him writing this and giggling to himself.

Hey Lego Monkie Kid fans, what do we think?
I, personally, believe them to be brothers and believe them to share a brotherly love! I'm not really a fan of Shadowpeach, but I'm curious to see what everyone in our lovely community thinks! Feel free to justify your answer in the comments!
